Peter Bouwsema seeks a second term on council

BY KIRSTEN PALARDY Lacombe Express Peter Bouwsema has announced he will, in fact, run again for Lacombe City council in this fall’s municipal election.

“I have been honoured by the citizens of Lacombe to be their representative on council for the last term and wish to represent them again for this next four-year term,” said Bouwsema.

Bouwsema has lived in Lacombe for 29 years after moving from Calgary. He owns and runs PJB Design Consultants which designs houses, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings. The company has designed over 500 residential units in Lacombe alone.

“I have loved this community

since I was a teenager. A small town atmosphere was where (my wife and I) wanted to raise our children.”

He said the community has given him so much quality of life that he chose to give back by running for council.

After being elected to council in 2010 he became further active in the community by being a part of the Disaster Services Committee, Lacombe Police Commission, Police Negotiating Committee, Lacombe & District Chamber of Commerce liaison and the Lacombe Heritage Survey Steering Committee.

He also participates locally by helping organize Lacombe Days since 2009 and being involved in the football teams while his children were in school.

Bouwsema said his business

the community, and he plans to continue aiding in good decision making if he were to be re-elected to council.

“I have the sincere desire to see the east side of Lacombe develop with commercial and residential properties,” said Bouwsema.

He added that he would like to see the percentage of tax revenue dropped for the residential sector as a result of industrial and commercial growth.

One goal of Bouwsema’s as a council member is to see Lacombe grow into a destination community where people not only want to live but where people have the opportunity to work and play.

His intentions for the upcoming term would be to continue with the progress that has been

made in the last three years.

“The present council was very proactive in creating a number of plans for the City of Lacombe with the most important one being the Strategic Plan.”

The Strategic Plan shows great importance to proper communication with Lacombe’s citizens and puts an emphasis on being transparent and open.

“We, as council, want to make sure that we have more business coming to the City which means having sufficient resources and infrastructure.”

He said he feels as if he has just begun his work with the City in the position of councillor.

Armishaw looks to return to council chambers

running for council in this year’s election.

He served six terms from 1986 – 2004 before deciding to take a hiatus on council.

Now, he has decided to get back in the game.

who didn’t know he had left.

“There is a number of people that actually still believe I’m still on council,” said Armishaw, laughing.

He added that he still attends City council meetings quite often and has a large interest in what goes on in Lacombe.

Curiosity and a desire to get more involved with the community were reasons Armishaw cited for wanting to get involved with council during his first run.

He said he enjoyed being part of the group that made decisions to determine what would happen in the community and serving that community.

Armishaw went on to say that, while on council, he tried his best to see that City funds were spent on tangible, practical assets the community could enjoy.

He added that these are also reasons he is running

for council once again.

“I just want to be part of that team again,” said Armishaw. He added that he left council in 2004 because he needed to switch his focus and tend to his fledgling business. Now, that business is more established and Armishaw said he thinks it’s a good time to get involved once again.

Due to his previous experience with council, Armishaw said, should he be voted into council again this election, councillors will have a different experience than if they were trying to work with someone entirely new to the role.

He also said he is very approachable and can bridge the gap that sometimes exists between citizens and council.

Armishaw said he is dedicated to representing the concerns of the people as well as the best interests of the City. He added he has

Council changes speed limit on Hwy. 12 through downtown

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Motorists will have to slow down while traveling through Lacombe’s downtown core on Hwy. 12 during the day after a motion passed by City council on Sept. 9.

In an effort to make Lacombe’s downtown core safer for pedestrians, Lacombe City council has voted to change the speed limit on Hwy. 12 from 53 St. to Hwy. 2A to 30 kms/h between the hours of 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. from Monday to Friday.

The standard speed of 50 kms/h would still apply outside those days and times.

This change will come into effect on Dec. 1 and be reviewed after one year.

Councillor Reuben Konnik, who brought the Notice of Motion to council on Aug. 26, said that he is not sure if his idea will achieve its goal of making downtown any safer, but he is more than willing to give it a shot.

“Let’s try it for a year, if I’m wrong, I’m wrong and we can adjust it,” said Konnik.

His motion, which passed by a vote of 5-2 on Monday, actually went against the recommendation of City administration, which suggested following the Transportation Association of Canada’s guidelines.

That would have meant leaving the speed limit at 50 km/h and removing 17 parking stalls along Hwy. 12.

Director of Infrastructure Matthew Goudi said that pedestrian safety in the downtown core has been an issue since at least 2002 and it has been looked at many ways, but said lowering the speed limit was not the solution.

“The lowering of the speed limit is not justified,” said Goudi. He also admitted that the removal of so many parking stalls downtown would have a detrimental effect to downtown businesses and said that council is welcome to look at other solutions to diminish that effect.

“It’s certainly council’s prerogative to look at a balance between engineering standards and downtown viability,” said Goudi.

Konnik said those negative effects felt from the downtown business community, of which he is a member, would be huge and that was not what he had in mind when he brought forth the Notice of Motion in an attempt to improve safety.

“My intent for this from the get-go was to make the downtown core safer,” said Konnik.

“My intent was never, ever to, in any

way, shape or form, harm the downtown business community.”

Konnik also said he appreciated the work done by engineers and respected the numbers they provided but added he didn’t think they understood the ramifications the recommended action would have on the downtown business community, of which he is a member.

However, some councillors did not agree that changing the speed limit would solve the problem.

Councillor Ian Foster, who voted against Konnik’s motion, said that changing the speed limit would cause problems for drivers.

“It just seems to me that this is going to frustrate the heck out of everybody,” said Foster. He added that council should put more stock in the numbers provided to them by administration.

“I have to believe these statistics that (Goudi) is giving us,” said Foster. “This isn’t just in Alberta, this is across Canada, so why are we going against the grain?”

Foster asked that the vote on the motion be recorded.

Respecting privacy The social networking site facebook is trying once again to subtly invade our privacy.

A web site already known for not being incredibly secure and not having the greatest privacy policies, facebook is developing a reputation for constantly modifying its privacy policies to strip away our privacy a little bit more each time those policies are updated.

Thankfully, facebook is also becoming known for backing down pretty quickly when challenged.

The most recent evidence of this is facebook delaying yet another change to its privacy policy after concerns that it may not actually be, well, legal.

Two years ago, after being caught publishing people’s photos without permission on the site’s ‘sponsored stories’ feed, facebook made an agreement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) remedying this policy, or lack thereof.

In response, facebook is attempting to revise its policy so that users will automatically consent to having their photos used unless they state otherwise.

However, after several privacy rights groups raised concern that this policy change still violates the previous agreement, facebook has delayed making the change.

These groups state that, since facebook is not gaining explicit permission from its users to use their photos, it’s still violating the

agreement. And we tend to agree.

This isn’t the first time facebook has tried to simply write or rewrite policy to allow itself to get away with a free grab of personal information and intellectual property.

Fortunately, facebook is now being forced to answer for it.

In an open letter to the FTC, the Center for Digital Democracy and Consumer Watchdog criticized facebook’s actions and implored the FTC not to allow facebook to get away with this violation of its previous agreement.

While facebook denies the letter has anything to do with the change in timeline, the fact remains that something has forced facebook to take a step back and re-examine its policy.

Which is a good thing.

It seems that with everything facebook does, it is trying to remove more and more of its users’ privacy.

Just look at facebook’s default privacy settings.

Until you adjust them, facebook sets all of your information to be entirely accessible to the public.

Their excuse for these default settings and for many of its other privacy-removing policies is that it makes it easier to connect people and to share with others.

What facebook continues to ignore is that no one wants to use facebook to make connections with

strangers. What people like about facebook (and the reason they continue to use it despite the continuing ridiculous updates and policy changes) is that it allows them to connect with friends.

Think about yourself and the people in your own facebook circle for a moment.

What do you use facebook for?

Most likely, you use it to share photos and posts to your friends around the world, to send messages to faraway friends and keep in touch with family members.

People don’t want a facebook that allows their photos and infor-

mation to be shared all over the Internet so they can be contacted by creepy strangers and make ‘new friends’.

They want a facebook that makes it easier to stay in touch and share things with people they know.

The company needs to start listening to the desires of its users rather than trying to find sneaky ways to make the private information of those users public.

No one wants their personal information spread all over the globe and available to anyone with an Internet connection, and it’s about time facebook recognized that.

Recreation and Culture Master Plan to set direction In March 2013 the City of Lacombe hired a consulting team, led by RC Strategies, in a proactive move to strengthen the quality of life for Lacombe residents by developing a Recreation and Culture Master Plan to address the recreation and culture needs and priorities related to indoor and outdoor facilities and services for the next 20 years.

The new Recreation and Culture Master Plan will provide dynamic and thoughtful guidance to the City of Lacombe in how it can sustain, enhance and strengthen the public provision of recreation and culture facilities and services and how the City can bolster the effectiveness of its partnerships.

The master plan is based on ensuring that all City residents and visitors have access to affordable and high-quality opportunities, thereby encouraging them to pursue healthy, active and engaged lifestyles.

After extensive public consultation and research, the consultants have concluded that residents

MacQUARRIE value recreation, parks and culture, as 86% of respondents to the household survey said recreation services are important to their quality of life.

As well, 78% said cultural services are important to their quality of life.

Recreation, parks and culture are the services and amenities that contribute to the quality of life of residents. The provision of these services is important and the City has a role to play in this regard.

The City offers a good slate of recreation and culture facilities and spaces for residents and visitors. These existing facilities should be maintained, with additional sustainable investment. According to the research, there is capacity to enable more people to

participate. Enhanced awareness of the opportunities and benefits of recreation and culture among residents is desirable and would increase utilization.

There is, however, a desire to see enhancement of the available recreation and cultural spaces in Lacombe. Approximately two-thirds (64%) of respondents to the household survey said new or upgraded facilities are needed.

Also, 63% of survey respondents indicated a willingness to pay increased annual property taxes to ensure that recreation and culture facilities, services and programs are available.

There are partnerships of varying types in Lacombe, and the opportunity exists to further this dynamic. Private-public partnerships can be an efficient and effective way to deliver recreation and culture services as existing processes, spaces, and expertise are leveraged to expand recreation and culture opportunities.

As well, volunteers and voluntary organizations play an integral

role in the provision of recreation and cultural services in Lacombe.

A healthy volunteer base is very important and the consultants have recommended that the municipality provide ongoing support to the volunteers and their organizations.

The master plan also indicates that primary role of the City to date has been to identify program needs, monitor effectiveness of programs through public input and facilitate the delivery of programs primarily through partner groups.

Should the delivery of needed programs not be achievable through partner groups and/or the private sector, the City may provide direct programming related to recreation and culture as an alternative.

The Recreation and Culture Master Plan will be presented to City council for review and approval at the Oct. 15 regular council meeting.

Letters to the editor

Trudeau’s pot stance is a refreshing policy option Legalizing marijuana use in Canada could be the best way, and maybe the only way, to protect children inclined or forced to use the stuff.

That’s the view of Justin Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, and the only Canadian political figure of note to have the guts to speak to the issue.

Immediately and predictably attacked by his political opponents, Trudeau is none the less right to suggest that we, as a society, need to consider new approaches to an ages old problem.

Trudeau’s view is likely new to most Canadians, though he has mused about it publicly before. Readers might also be surprised to hear that many Latin American politicians and policy analysts are saying the same thing.

The issue is far too complex to address in a short column, but we can agree there is a need to explore alternatives of our current way of dealing with drugs.

Let’s also allow that marijuana use will damage your health, and that legalization would have consequences.

There is a tendency among most politicians and editorialists to use that argument to dismiss change out-of-hand, when

they should be willing to at least explore the possibilities.

The argument for legalization would primarily be an acknowledgement of failed social policy.

It is a fact, even a sad one, that human beings will explore the use of substances that alter their state of mind.

It is certainly sad that many millions of North Americans live desperate lives as a result of overuse and resulting addiction.

The question of what is to be done about it is challenging.

It was U.S. President Richard Nixon who established the so-called “war on drugs” in the 1970s, which beefed up policing and military activities in the United States and in countries around the world that supplied drugs to American users.

That “war,” as Trudeau rightly suggested, has been a complete, abject, costly, failure on all levels. Drug use is more rampant now than then. Highly militarized and monumentally wealthy cartels are also trafficking in armaments and humans, as well as drugs.

Our response politically has been to spend even more money, only to see 50,000plus people killed in Mexico alone over the

Councillor reflects on service to community As time is winding down for me as a councillor I would like to reflect for a moment on the past seven and a half years.

I have really enjoyed the opportunities this elected position has given me, from meeting elected officials from not only across the province but the rest of Canada and all of you in our community.

So many highlights to reflect upon in such a short tenure I hope that I have helped everyone to understand how important it is to be a proactive voice in our community and come with the problem, opportunity as well as a solution.

It also has been a real pleasure to see how our City employees work in making the community a

better place to live.

Please take a moment when you see something they have done you feel should be recognized to write to the CAO - Norma MacQuarrie and council.

I also take pride in our accomplishments as a community, from the roads and infrastructure improvements to the facilities we have to the arts and culture especially as we develop into the Mural Capital of Alberta - all of these things take a lot of planning and foresight.

The list is way too long to put here but needless to say when we can all look back at where our Town/City has been it gives me comfort we will be a progressive community, always striving to improve the

lives of everyone here.

Now I want to get on my soapbox to make a plea to all of you who live, work and play and enjoy this beautiful City.

We need younger people and especially women to sit on council for this election.

We also need people from every walk of life to sit on volunteer boards and commissions in the City to ensure we keep going in the right direction.

Please remember this is a right that you have to make a difference in the most beautiful city in Alberta Thank you to all of you I have had the privilege, and pleasure to work with and for. I really will miss it.

Ironically, even though the United States, and by geography Canada, are the main markets for drugs in North America, the most active minds and voices on the subject are in Latin America.

As recently as May of this year, an Organization of American States (OAS) report concluded that governments of the hemisphere need look seriously at the potential value of legalizing marijuana.

The OAS has never been known for its radical take on things, and is in fact highly conservative. It has been forced into taking this stance by its members, with Canada and the U.S. on the wrong side of the prevailing view.

Predictably, President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper have dismissed the idea out of hand. It is mindboggling that such smart men are so afraid of considering the idea, particularly when so many equally smart people are open to its consideration.

It seems that Obama and Harper are satisfied with the status quo, the deaths, social disruption and gang violence in their communities.

Marijuana is the most widely used illicit

substance on the planet, driving an underground industry in the billions. Making its use legal could severely impact gang activity everywhere. Selling it as we do alcohol and cigarettes would allow for limits on strength and additives, and control in sales to minors.

Tobacco styled warnings could be put on packages, and driving under the influence treated severely.

The billions of dollars generated in taxes could be used to treat addictions for all kinds of drug use and pay for public education campaigns.

People will continue to use drugs and our choice is to either continue advancing policing and military responses or to examine reasonably considered alternatives.

Justin Trudeau should be applauded for having the courage to address the issue.

It would be nice to see other Canadian policy-makers, political analysts, and editorialists join in a serious examination of the possibility and potential of change.

Memories of the old grey mare and real horsepower A little mare pulling a buggy piloted by a diminutive Scot, the latter holding the halter shank of the stallion that pranced alongside; a stallion with arched neck, head on high, prancing feet, shining hooves visible beneath the feather and fire in his eyes.

A beautiful sight in the eyes of all onlookers and a common sight in pioneer years when every pioneer raised their own horsepower for work that ranged from farmyard chores with the buggy to duties involved in crop production and road building.

A team, even a single horse, sufficed for the former but the latter required hitches of four to eight horses to break new sod, harvest the crop and operate road construction equipment.

The hitches would be either mares or geldings.

Stallions were too highspirited and their attention too easily diverted to provide steady power, hence the need for the traveling stallion to ensure a new crop of foals would be available for annual replenishment of the power supply.

The service provided by traveling studs was augmented by stallions maintained in studs operated by the federal government.

These studs, an integral part of the experimental farms system, were intended to upgrade the quality of draft horses in the local area, each stud featuring the breed or breeds of importance to the local agricultural community.

Two breeds, the Clydesdale and the Percheron got the nod in the Lacombe area when the experiment station was created here in 1907. Mares were brought to the station for breeding.

No service fee was charged and pasture was provided for a weekly charge of $4 per week. During the period 1946 to 1958 more than 150 mares were pastured

A Shire breeding program, initiated by a gift provided by the Shire Society of Great Britain, began in 1923. Shire stallions stood for public service until 1929 with 200 mares served in the final year.

At the station the Shire lost out to the Clydesdale, its smaller look-alike cousin; by 1938 the Clydesdale was the signature breed of the station and provider of all of its horsepower. During the summer, 20 horses, all registered Clydesdales, stood harnessed and ready for fieldwork each morning at 8 a.m.

A thoroughbred was added in 1946 to meet a demand for lighter weight horses.

His name was Warrenpoint. When he was retired in 1958 all horse breeding service at the station was terminated but his tenure had provided an innovative example of rustling.

Warrenpoint’s pedigree was studded with relatives sporting impressive championships at the racetrack.

Accordingly, his service fee was $50. A sharp contrast with the zero fee charged for the draft breeds. But even $50 was too much for one individual. One night an employee returning late to the bunkhouse noted the stallion’s stall was vacant and a mare was being loaded into a truck parked in the shadows. He recorded the license number and reported the incident to the superintendent the next morning, evidence the stallion had worked overtime was readily established and the RCMP were called.

They were not surprised;

the license number was well known.

Before pressing charges they wanted to have the crime described.

This proved difficult.

Theft of semen was not listed among crimes. Since the stallion did not appear to be disturbed by the night’s proceedings, the matter was dropped.

The sequel to this story came the following summer. The culprit demanded the station, as owner of the stallion that had yielded to

temptation, sign the foal’s registration papers; a detail required by law for registration of the resulting foal.

Jack Stothart, the station director and thus defacto ‘owner’ of the stallion, rejected this demand. His Ottawa boss gave a direct order. Jack refused a second time, referencing the letter he had sent to Ottawa the previous year providing details of the unauthorized liaison. But the man was persistent and forti-

fied with political connections as well for he wrote the minister of agriculture claiming the station was in contempt of the Pedigree Act for failure to provide service papers.

The minister himself ordered Stothart to sign the papers. The traveling stallion has vanished from the scene. Draft horses were rendered redundant with the advent of tractor power. Such was the case on the home farm where I was born. Forty horses

provided the power and on average two foals were introduced to harness each year. When the time came to convert to tractor power the down payment for a 25 horsepower tractor required the sale of 30 young but experienced harnessready horses at $10 per head. Draft horses remain visible today but only as chore boys at livestock shows or as show entertainment, drawing wagons for brewing companies at agricultural exhibitions.

Pickford arrested after high speed chase

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express A man has been arrested after allegedly fleeing from police and attempting to drive over two Lacombe officers.

Weston Pickford of Red Deer has been charged with a number of offences, including two counts of attempted murder after altercations with Red Deer City Traffic, Red Deer RCMP and the Lacombe Police Service.

On Sept. 4th, a Red Deer City traffic enforcement officer conducted a traf-

fic stop and was allegedly assaulted by Pickford, the driver of the vehicle, who then fled the scene. The identity of the driver was obtained prior to the suspect fleeing in his vehicle, police said.

Police were not able to immediately locate the suspect and a warrant for his arrest was obtained.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., the Lacombe Police Service was made aware of the outstanding warrant.

They also received information that the suspect was possibly at a residence in Lacombe and was armed

with a gun.

Three Lacombe Police Service members responded to the area in southeast Lacombe in an effort to locate the man.

Officers approached the residence on foot and observed Pickford getting into a vehicle. Despite being ordered to stop, Pickford attempted to strike two of the officers with the vehicle as he fled the area, say police.

Police Chief Steve Murray said that the officers were standing directly in front of the vehicle’s headlights when giving Pickford the order to stop.

Pickford then drove west on 50th Ave. in Lacombe to Hwy. 2. He was traveling at a high rate of speed and was pursued south towards the City of Red Deer, police said.

The pursuit was turned over to Red Deer City RCMP. The vehicle then entered the City limits and the police utilized a tire deflation device to demobilize the vehicle.

The driver attempted to continue fleeing but eventually the vehicle came to a stop against a tree and ignited. Pickford was arrested without incident

and Red Deer Emergency Services was dispatched to tend to the vehicle fire.

Pickford was then confirmed to be the same individual who had assaulted the Red Deer Peace Officer earlier that day, police said.

Murray said this is incident is an example of how Lacombe, while a very safe community, is not completely invulnerable to acts of violence and its police service is often put in dangerous situations working for the good of the community.

“In this case I’m just really glad that in the out-

come, nobody in the public was injured, none of the officers were injured and the offender himself wasn’t injured,” said Murray.

Pickford is charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assaulting a police officer, two counts of fleeing from a peace officer, two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, breach of probation and possession of break-in instruments.

He will make his first appearance in court Sept. 18 in Red Deer.

In other crime news, an off-duty RCMP officer’s curiosity has led to the arrest of a would-be car thief.

On Sept. 5, at approximately 2:25 a.m. an off duty RCMP member advised the Blackfalds detachment that a woman was going into unlocked vehicles on Chinook St. in Blackfalds.

While awaiting the arrival of Blackfalds members the off duty member approached the woman, who at this time was in a motor vehicle and questioned her as to what she was doing.

The woman then fled in the 2013 Dodge Avenger which police determined had been stolen from a residence in Red Deer earlier that evening.

At 2:50 a.m. Blackfalds RCMP conducted a traffic stop on the Avenger with a 21-year-old

Both were arrested without incident.

The vehicle was returned to the owner and no items were stolen from the vehicles entered.

The male had outstanding Criminal Code warrants from Red Deer and has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance and two breaches of probations.

The female will be charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance, mischief and failure to comply with release documents.

The identities of these adults will be released once the criminal informations have been laid.

Blackfalds RCMP are reminding vehicle owners to lock their vehicles as the thefts from motor vehicles are crimes of opportunity and many can be prevented by locking your vehicles.

Obituaries BAIRD Joyce (Sweet) Crooker The family of Joyce Baird announces her peaceful passing at the Lacombe Hospital Sept 7, 2013 after a brief illness. Joyce was born June 13, 1933 near Morningside and was happy to have celebrated her 80th birthday with family and friends this past June. She was married in October 1952 to Fred Crooker and they had a family of six daughters.

Joyce was left to raise her daughters alone at a very young age in 1966 when her husband died in a work accident.

In 1978 she married Walter Baird who passed away in 1996. She was predeceased by her daughter Cathy Thompson, sisters Bertha Smith and Elsie Chalmers, brother Walter Sweet as well as her parents. Through all of life’s struggles Joyce exhibited a quiet strength, calmness and dignity that those who knew her admired a great deal.

She will be missed and forever remembered by her daughters Joann Swarbrick (Calvin), Sandra Crooker, Laurie Whitecotton (Marty), Danita Hunt (Don) and Denise Watson (Tyrone), her sisters’ Gloria Bodnarchuk and Susan Umrysh, 21 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. As Joyce requested no formal funeral service be held, her daughters will host a gathering Monday September 16th at the Lacombe Memorial Centre at 1 pm. Red Green brings ‘handyman know-how’ to region Brand new material featured in comedian’s cross-country show

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express Canada’s favourite ‘handyman’ will be stocking up on flannel shirts and duct tape and hitting the road this fall on his latest tour.

The trek dubbed ‘How To Do Everything (From the Man who Should Know)’ show, featuring Red Green, makes a Red Deer stop Sept. 30 at the Arts Centre, with showtime set for 7 p.m.

Red Green (aka Steve Smith) had an amazing run in Canada in 2011 and in the U.S. in 2012, playing to sold-out houses and garnering rave reviews.

During that run, he did a whopping 139 shows. “After the 10th or 11th show, I was pretty comfortable on stage,” he explains.

“I now have a sense of what the audience is going to do, what they are interested in and what they are not interested in. At least I hope I do.”

It was also a relatively new venture for Smith as of course he had been a comic staple on TV for many years as the iconic Red Green. He laughs recalling how he didn’t expect the series, which went off the air in 2006, to go beyond one season.

It lasted nine seasons, and it was Smith – not the network who decided to wrap it up.

Smith originally created the character for his 1979–1985 sketch comedy series Smith & Smith.

The sketch was a parody of the long-running Canadian outdoors show The Red Fisher Show (1968– 1989), starring BH ‘Red’ Fisher in which Red and his friends would show silent films of their fishing trips with commentary at ‘Scuttlebutt Lodge’.

The Red Green character also appeared in Me & Max and The Comedy Mill before becoming the focus of his own series. Smith also

They poured everything into that first year, and that kept things strikingly fresh, original and on the edge. “We were just trying to be funny – we’d be laughing while filming the show.

We were just having fun. We weren’t looking for a career.”

The show was produced first by CHCH in Hamilton then by CFPL in London, then by the Global Television Network. It then landed a permanent home at CBC for the 1997 season onward.

For those unfamiliar with show’s premise, Red Green was the president of the Possum Lodge, a men’s club in the Ontario town of Possum Lake near the

also-fictional town of Port Asbestos. He and fellow lodge members had their own TV show in which they gave lessons and demonstrations in repair work and outdoor activities and advice for men.

As for Red Green’s enduring popularity, Smith credits the appeal of the character and his setting to audiences. There’s something comfortable, simple and even rather innocent about Red Green and his surroundings, and folks want to check into that place. Particularly in an increasingly complex, fast-paced and stressed-out society.

Born in Toronto, Smith recalls being the funny one of the family.

“I’ve never been able to see things the same way other people see them,” he explains. “If I had

chosen another profession, that would have been a huge liability.

“But because I’m doing what I’m doing, it’s a huge asset to see things differently. Audiences may be familiar with the subject matter, but they’ve never looked at it the way I present it.”

As the years passed, he became increasingly interested in music as well. He went on to play with a few bands. During one concert, his comic gift surfaced that much more.

“One night during a show, our guitarist broke his string. So I just started talking and the audience was laughing hysterically.

I went on talking long beyond when the string was replaced.”

He later realized humour was his thing, and decided to whole-

heartedly pursue it.

Although he went on to study engineering at the University of Waterloo, in 1979 he began to produce write and star in a comedy series along with his wife Morag, called Smith & Smith. In the mideighties, he also created a sitcom called Me and Max, before returning to sketch comedy with The Comedy Mill which ran for four years.

Meanwhile for the coming tour, Smith started creating dialogue and sketches from scratch this past January. Over the space of about six months, after countless rewrites and rehearsals in character, he came up with 90 minutes of fresh, cracking material.

“Steve Smith writes it. And rewrites and rewrites it. It gets to the point where I’m pretty satisfied with it or I’m running out of time. That is then ‘handed over’ to Red Green. I then set up in my old garage kind of like a stage, and I perform the whole thing as Red Green. While I’m doing it, I listen to it, too. Red Green takes what Steve Smith wrote, and turns it into something that works for him.

“So it’s really a process.”

This fall will also see the release of Red Green’s Beginner’s Guide To Women (For Men Who Don’t Read Instructions), his third book for Random House.

As for hitting the stage, Smith says bring it on.

“I never did this as a young man. So most guys like me, who go and do this, they’re trying to recapture something they might have done better 35 years ago. But for me, it feels fresh. I’m 67 years old doing something that feels fresh and new – that’s not easy to come buy.

10 x 10 creates a new twist on opinions of artwork

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, not the name of the artist.

That is the idea behind Lacombe’s arts related event and fundraiser, 10 x 10 The Unknown Artist Art Sale and Fundraiser.

This event, which takes place from Sept. 18 to 29, showcases 10 inch by 10 inch pieces of artwork (or in the case of 3D art, pieces that will ďŹ t in a 10 inch cubed container) for sale that are not signed by their creators.

Maureen Mackenzie, executive assistant for the City of Lacombe and one of the event’s organizers, said that a collection of art has been assembled for the event.

She also said that the preview and sale night also presents an opportunity for art lovers to get their hands on some artwork.

On Sept. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m., a preview gala will be held where attendants can purchase any piece they like for $200, regardless of what the piece is valued at.

Some pieces have been valued up to $1,100, Mackenzie added.

Any pieces not sold during the preview sale will go up for silent auction during Lacombe’s Culture & Heritage Festival.

All of the pieces will be on display at the Lacombe Memorial Centre starting Sept. 12.

At this point, more than 50 pieces have been collected for 10 x 10 The Unknown Artist, said Mackenzie. She said most of the artists are from Alberta, but some have gained national recognition.

All kinds of artworks can be found within this collection, Mackenzie said. She added there is everything from paintings to pottery to glass mosaics to wax crayon art. “It’s a broad range of artwork which is pretty cool.�

Mackenzie said the point of making the artist behind the pieces anonymous is to encourage people to let their feelings about the art itself determine whether or not they like a piece.

She added that the pieces in

10 x 10 The Unknown Artist are signed on the back of the pieces, so buyers will know the identity of the artist who created the piece after they have purchased it.

In the past, Lacombe has held an Arts Gala event in November.

Mackenzie said the event has run for the past 13 years and this year, organizers decided to do something different. They came up with 10 x10 The Unknown Artist after learning of how successful such events had been elsewhere.

Mackenzie stressed that this is a new event that will replace the Arts Gala normally held in November. She also said anyone planning to attend the preview evening at the Lacombe Memorial Centre is encouraged to buy their tickets in advance.

Tickets can be purchased for $20 at City Hall, Judy’s Frames Plus, the Lacombe Memorial Centre and Alberta Art and Drafting Supplies in Red Deer. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $25.

Bamford wrote the track with Nashville writers Buddy Owens and Ray Stephenson, after learning of his brother-in-law’s suicide.

As Edmonton geared up for the show at the Canadian Country Music Association’s Country Music Week, Bamford also took time to help out at the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

Bamford has donated $10,000 from his Gord Bamford Charitable Foundation to the Stollery’s Music Therapy Program.

Without continuous funding, the program is in jeopardy of discontinuing, said Dianne Tuterra, child life team leader at the Stollery.

The Music Therapy Program began in November

of 2011. “It’s important to give back and I make kids a priority,� said Bamford, who recently generated $355,000 at his annual Gord Bamford Charity Golf Classic held in August. “When music can take a child’s pain away, even for just a brief moment, that is truly a powerful gift.�

Music therapy referrals can also happen by parent request, nursing and by initiation of the music therapist. Music therapy sessions can be done individually at the child’s bedside, some are in small groups in children’s rooms or in a common area in the unit and a once per week group session is held on the ‘Beach’, the largest playroom in the hospital.

‘Missfits of Mayhem’ head to tourney

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express Missfits of Mayhem are on their way to Crossfield.

On Sept. 14 and 15, Central Alberta Roller Derby Association’s (CARDA) travel team, the Missfits of Mayhem (MOM) will be in Crossfield participating in the first ever Iron Woman tournament.

Regina (Diesel Duchess) Robertson, president of CARDA, said that this tournament is unlike anything CARDA has been part of before and she is very much looking forward to it.

“It’s the first of its kind,” said Robertson. “It is going to be awesome.”

The Iron Woman Tournament will feature two days of derby matches.

On Saturday, each team will play three 30-minute matchups to determine seeding in the second day of the tourney.

Sunday’s games will have traditional time lengths and be governed by standard roller derby rules.

Rules for Saturday’s bouts will be very different from the normal derby rules and not just because of the shortened game time.

One match will have skaters playing without a lead jammer, meaning jams will always last the full two minutes.

Another game mode will only allow two substitutions between jams.

Finally, the last game mode will have skaters traveling in a clockwise direction rather than the usual counter-clockwise direction of roller derby games.

Robertson said that this year, CARDA has struggled throughout the season.

She mentioned there had been many injuries forcing players to take time off to heal as well as other factors that have affected how much time many players have had on the track.

As such, while Robertson and the rest of CARDA are looking forward to the Iron Woman tournament, she is a bit worried as to how well they will perform.

“I’m excited to go but I’m a little bit nervous for our team because we are illprepared,” said Robertson. She added that some of CARDA’s skaters have been off since the beginning of June.

“We’re a little out of shape, compared to what we used to be.”

Because Iron Woman is a non-sanctioned tournament and CARDA does not

need to worry about the rankings, Robertson said it is ultimately a different incarnation of MOM that will be playing in the tournament.

She said the team will be playing under the MOM brand, but any player who is benchmarked and willing to go will be participating and not necessarily only the elite players who usually make up the team.

While a tournament this late in the year would usually serve as a wrap-up for CARDA’s season, Robertson said the event is being treated more like a kick-off for CARDA’s new league format.

Starting Oct. 5, CARDA will be switching to an inter-house winter-league.

Robertson said the switch is being made in an effort to remedy the difficulties CARDA has finding teams and maintaining players and volunteers in the summer

when many people are away on vacation or have other commitments.

She added the last few games scheduled for CARDA teams needed to be cancelled due to insufficient numbers.

As part of this new winter league, CARDA will be introducing the CARDA Cup, which will have the four CARDA house teams featured - Mia Dolls, Rez City Rollers, Vexy Beasts and Heartland Rollergirls - competing with one another for a league title.

Games will be held once every six weeks throughout the winter with the championship bout being held on June 7.

CARDA’s elite travel team, Missfits of Mayhem, will still be playing games outside of the league as usual, said Robertson.

She added house teams might have exhibition games outside of the league if invited

as well.

As CARDA will be losing their usual venue, the Blackfalds Multiplex, to hockey in the winter, they will be using different venues for the winter league, alternating between Stettler and Wetaskiwin, which are also part of CARDA’s large geographical region, said Robertson.

She added there is a chance CARDA may return to Blackfalds for matches in the summer, but it is unknown at this time.

Robertson said CARDA is eager for the new winter season to start, as this summer season has not been the best for them.

“We are looking for a fresh start.”
