ABBOTSFORD MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY THE ABBOTSFORD NEWS
CELE B RAT ING ABBOT SFOR D AND THE FRASER VAL L E Y’S D IV E RS ITY The sixth annual AbbyFest Multicultural Festival is set to get underway Sept. 21 at Abbotsford’s Ag Rec Building. The event is a showcase of diversity that celebrates the many cultures that make up this city and the province. School board trustee and community supporter Stan Petersen became involved in the festival last year, as stage manager for the various acts that performed. This year he decided to take a bigger role in organizing the celebration and joined the board of directors. He said this year’s celebration will be similar to past events. “There’s not many changes this year. We are in a transition phase of course because Musleh, who is the founder and the main reason AbbyFest happened, has moved out of town,” he explained.

Musleh Hakki founded the event back in 2008 as a way to educate the community about different cultures and the importance of multiculturalism.

Petersen said for the first time this year, the entire board has been charged with sharing all of the responsibilities to make the festival a success. “We expect it will be every bit as good as it has ever been,” he said. AbbyFest is important to Petersen because Abbotsford is the “third most multicultural city in Canada” and he feels that needs to be celebrated. “It’s a one-day event that celebrates all cultures – anyone who wants to be involved.” People can expect to see cultural displays, information booths, clothing and entertainment. “You can expect some great entertainment. It’s on stage right from the beginning to the end of the day.” Acts this year include a Philippine dance group, Bhangra dancers, a Chinese cultural sword dancer, a UFV fashion show, German songs, a martial arts demonstration, Latin music, the Abbotsford Men’s Con’t...

Chorus and belly dancing. “There’s something for all tastes.” Also on hand will be a wide selection of ethnic foods that always pleases the crowd. The festival kicks off at 10 a.m. with the Parade of Nations, featuring flags from all the countries represented at the event. The day closes at 6 p.m. “When we get to know each other we get to live in greater harmony. A lot of misunderstanding comes from just not knowing each other. And I think the more we get together and celebrate the different cultures we have in our community, the better understanding we will have of each other and the better we can live together.” Petersen said the goal is to keep building the event and make it bigger and better each year. “I’m an Abbotsford fan, always have been, always will be. We’re a very diverse community and I think we need to celebrate that fact regularly and I strongly believe in that.”
