Anticipating life after years in local politics Morris and Hazel Flewwelling look forward to next chapter in their lives

MOVING FORWARD - Mayor Morris Flewwelling and his wife Hazel Flewwelling enjoy one of the last warm days of summer on their colourful backyard patio.

A

fter spending decades in the public eye with first being elected to council and then elected as the City’s mayor, Morris Flewwelling looks ahead to life after politics.

Sitting in the backyard of their Red Deer home, Morris and his wife Hazel talk about what their plans are for the future and what they will miss about political life.

“Hazel and I are going to do some traveling. We want to do the traveling we haven’t been able to do as I have been mayor. I could miss a council meeting, but when you miss a council meeting and the paper and the buzz – you miss and it doesn’t sink in,” he said. “We also do genealogy so we are looking forward to doing some of that.

Both of us are interested in the arts and so there’s always work to be done in that.”

The Flewwelling’s will stay in Red Deer and as Morris said, “We’re rooted in this community. Both of us have been community builders for the last 45 years.”

However, he is looking forward to getting to spend more time on his Central Alberta ranch as well.

“I want to get back to my ranch. I’ve got things I want to accomplish there. And of

course I have umpteen projects I have set aside. With this job you don’t work from dawn until dark but there are enough interruptions throughout the day that you feel like you get nothing done.”

As for after the election, Morris said he is looking forward to stepping out of the spot light.

“When I look at the future, I have to step off the municipal government podium. We don’t want the hand of the former mayor mucking around in what is going on,” he said. “If the mayor asks me for an opinion, I will offer it privately to my successor. But I will not be shooting from the sidelines.

It’s important that for the go-forward my lip will be zipped.”

As for Hazel, she said she has also enjoyed Morris’ time in office.

“It was a great privilege to be involved with the City. The City is a jealous lover and if you are really committed to doing your work as a councillor and as a mayor you have to have the support of family because the whole family is part of this,” she said, adding that there are times it has been hard. “You’re raising children on your own a lot of the time. There’s a lot of single-parenting particularly when the children are young.”

“Publicly you can’t have an opinion.

When I know Morris is doing his absolute best and it’s not good enough – it hurts,” she said. “You know who your real friends are when the chips are down. Sometimes really difficult decisions have to be made and you know people are going to be ticked off. Based on as much information you have, you have to make a decision and you have to make it in front of everybody.

That’s politics – that’s why it’s a blood sport.”

Over the years Hazel also has kept a close handle on the schedule of upcoming events.

“I don’t mind going to a number of events because sometimes it’s the only time I get to see him (Morris). I get printout – I try to get one two weeks ahead of time and then I know where I am supposed to be and to have my hair done and what to wear. I also want to know who I am sitting with so I know names and what they have done.”

She added she is looking forward to having some more downtime with Morris as well.

“We’re going to do some reading and writing. There are some wonderful stories that need to be written.”

Morris said he thinks the wind-down after the election will be challenging.

“When you’re the mayor and the mayor’s wife, you are used to being identified as soon as you come into the room or onto the grounds whether it’s formally or informally – people know you’re there and they are watching you. You know you’re an object of some attention. That abruptly stops with the election of a new mayor.”

As for what she will miss the most, Hazel said it will be the people.

“I find people fascinating, I find them very interesting.”

Flewwelling added although there have been trying times as a councillor and as mayor, he would do it all over again.

“It’s always been fun. Sometimes when you talk about it you talk about it in terms of the negative. But it’s always been fun.

Nobody made me do it and I didn’t have to do it. It has been fun.”

One thing Hazel said she knows moving forward is that there will always be some kind of excitement in their lives.

“When Morris proposed to me 45 years ago he said ‘I promise you’ll never be bored’ and I never have been, he is always up to something. So I know that I will never be bored.” efawcett@reddeerexpress.com

Annual Run for the Cure set for Oct. 6

BY KIRSTEN PALARDY Red Deer Express The annual CIBC Run for the Cure is coming up in a little less than a month, and teams are already well on their way to raising funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Some teams have already raised as much as $2,010 and some as much as $3,155. These funds will go to researching breast cancer as well as helping patients currently receiving treatments.

Emily Engebretson, spokesperson for Run for the Cure, said these funds are vital in the success stories of beating breast cancer.

Participants can register the day of the event, but are

Engebretson got involved after her aunt was diagnosed with, and survived, breast cancer. Vikki Scott, the aunt, said she now attends the event as a spectator just for the energy.

“The event is just full of positive energy and it’s so empowering and motivating to keep going,” said Scott.

Scott said the funds raised through events like Run for the Cure are so important to breast cancer patients, as it has allowed for so much research to be done.

“Because of all that these events fund, breast cancer patients are in and treated before it’s allowed to progress. It was just so quick how they got me in and treated and into remission,” said Scott.

Engebretson said a lot of people participate in the run because they know someone who has been affected by breast cancer, which is what she said got her involved.

The run this year is set for Oct. 6 and starts at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School. Participants have the option to run or walk 1km or 5km.

“I think that this year is going to be really big,” said Engebretson.

She believes this year’s event will be big because all other small events have been incredibly successful as well this year.

“The run day is basically to raise funds and awareness for research. Everyone comes down and we have survivors come speak and we have the entire day centred around raising awareness and funds,” said Engebretson.

Leading up to the run day participants are encouraged to raise funds on their own, online, or as a team. Engebretson said previous teams have run everything from garage and bake sales to car washes and BBQs to raise funds.

“Once run day comes it’s just so inspirational and exciting for everyone to be there. Everyone has team names and themes,” said Engebretson.

Participants are encouraged to dress up to show their support and she said there have been men in boas, people in hats and full colour-coordinated teams in past years.

“People are getting more and more involved and not only do we have people returning to do the run but we have a lot of people saying this is their first year and they are super excited for it,” said Engebretson.

The cost to register is $40, which provides participants with their Run for the Cure t-shirt.

“If you’re a team of more than 10 and you’ve all paid your registration then you can get your names printed on your t-shirt,” said Engebretson.

Last year’s event raised $289,000 locally and more than 1,200 people took part in the Run for the Cure.

“It’s just a really great cause and such a fun and inspirational day. Even if you can’t participate, come attend, see what it’s all about, hear a survivor tell their story. Maybe then you can take part next year.”

Second annual fundraiser for Tools for Schools Africa

BY KIRSTEN PALARDY Red Deer Express Most people have some jewelry in their home that they no longer wear or that they simply don’t care for, but they don’t know what to do with it.

The opportunity to get rid of said jewelry is now with the second annual Tools for School Africa Foundation’s (TFSAF) Shine! event coming up.

“We simply ask the ladies of the community if they would be willing to donate the jewelry from the bottom of their jewelry boxes.

It costs them nothing, and benefits us,” said Marilyn Pottage, chair of the board of TFSAF in Canada and Ghana.

She said this is the most significant fundraiser for the Foundation and the purpose is to raise funds for scholarships for girls in west Africa. The idea behind this fundraiser was that it would be a unique event that wouldn’t cost any one person an exorbitant amount of money.

Pottage said that last year’s event raised $23,000 which was then matched by the provincial government to provide over $40,000 in scholarship funding to the girls of west Africa.

“To date we have helped more than 70 girls and by this fall we

will have about 85 girls in the program. We have about 30 that have gotten through high school and a number that have gone on to post secondary training.”

The cost to put a girl through junior high is between $150-$200 and high school is about $200. Pottage pointed out though that the private boarding school costs are about $600.

“Also last year we ended up doing a build with the University of Manitoba and their board of directors passed it as a credit course. So the students did all the architectural drawings and initial building and put in sweat equity.”

The event this year will be taking place on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at Festival Hall, which is a move from the Westerner grounds where it was held last year.

There are just a few tickets left at this point and they are available on the web site for $35 for a regular shopper or $40 for a super shopper.

“A super shopper ticket gets them in to the event one hour before anybody else and they can go to all the sale tables and choose an item, plus they get to see what’s available before anybody else.”

Pottage said there are some wonderful pieces of jewelry this year, but the event has been ex-

panded to include scarves and purses as well.

Francisca Amoako, treasurer of the Ghanaian TFSAF board will also be present at the event and will be teaching African dancing.

“People will also have the opportunity to donate directly to a scholarship and Francisca will be on hand to speak directly to anyone who wants to know about the scholarships.”

There will also be live entertainment by local artist Marla Torgerson.

One thing Pottage said she is very proud of is the TFSAF’s low overhead and administration costs. “Our budget for 2012 was $83,000 and our overhead and administrative fees were $240 which is well under one half of one per cent. Not a lot of charities can say their numbers are that good.”

She also added that there are already plans in the works to host this event again next year.

“So many people said this is something that’s affordable and that they could bring their daughter and she could buy something to take home.”

Guests will be presented a glass of wine as they enter compliments of True Line Homes as well as a gift bag and dessert.

looking to collect donations of jewelry for next year, which can be dropped off at Artistry In Gold in downtown Red Deer.

OPINION Remembering 9/11 It’s hard to believe it’s been 12 years since that horrifying day when terrorists slammed planes into New York City’s World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Sept. 11 is one of those dates where people of age recall precisely where they were when they heard the devastating news.

Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day, which many have described as a bleak turning point in society as well – we live with the impact of 9/11 in so many ways today. It’s one of those events in history that we will never really move on from.

Immediate responses to 9/11 included greater focus on home life and time spent with family, higher church attendance and increased expressions of patriotism such as the flying of flags across the nation.

Today, the 9/11 memorial in New York City is visited by thousands everyday – a testament to how impactful this event was. The Memorial’s twin reflecting pools are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in the North America.

The names of every person who died in the 2001 and 1993 attacks are inscribed into bronze panels edging the Memorial pools, and it’s a powerful reminder of the largest loss of life resulting from a foreign attack on American soil and the greatest single loss of rescue personnel in American history.

Such terrorist violence has been, to a degree, witnessed in other parts of the world, but this really was the first time such a horrendous attack took place in North America.

Remnants of the attacks remain today – people in general are perhaps more suspicious, more fearful and more sensitive to news of potential threats to national security. Border securities are tighter, even something relatively routine as flying is certainly more of a security hassle which is understandable and overall, much more patience is required.

Today, the public was invited to join Red Deer Emergency Services and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for a Memorial March ceremony at City Hall to honour all firefighters and police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

And earlier this year, Battalion Commander Richard ‘Pitch’ Picciotto was the keynote speaker the Mac & Cheese Charity Luncheon, hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Red Deer.

He was the highest-ranking firefighter to survive the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Picciotto was in a stairwell in the North Tower when it collapsed He was buried in the rubble for more than four hours before being rescued.

He has written a book about the tragedy entitled Last Man Down: A Firefighter’s Story of Survival and Escape from the World Trade Center.

It was a message of inspiration and really brought the event to local folks’ attention once again. It brought it home.

Hopefully the events of 9/11 – and the loss that day represents -- will never fade from our collective memory.

Understanding Alberta’s boom and bust economy In May 2010, the Institute for Public Economics organized a conference entitled Boom and Bust Again – Policy Challenges for a Commodity-based Economy.

ASCAH As the title suggests, this conference brought together serious academics and policy-makers to learn more about Alberta’s boom and bust phenomenon.

A recent book - Boom and Bust – based on the conference proceedings recently published by the University of Alberta Press, revisits this perennial debate.

A dozen peer-reviewed papers were produced by eminent academics examining Alberta’s volatile economy alternatively ignited with red-hot growth followed by stagnation as

oil prices wax and wane.

This series of essays, in honour of Bradford Reid, a former director of the Institute and professor of economics, grew from an anxiety about how well booms and busts are managed by governments and business.

The contributors are all passionate and ‘expert’ on Alberta’s political economy. Scholars such as Mel McMillan, Stuart Landon, Connie Smith, Ron Kneebone, Stephen Duckett and Ted Chambers were asked to examine the public policy issues which perennially confound Alberta’s politicians, policy-makers and business leaders.

How do we manage the wealth and natural bounty for society as a whole? How do we sequester resource revenue to benefit future generations? Has the Alberta economy diversified from its oil and gas resource base?

To answer these and other questions, book contributors reviewed historical information, made

future projections and offered insights into the dynamics of boom and bust.

It is to academics that the public should look to – and demand -relevant research on subjects that touch the Martha and Henry of Alberta politics.

While it is difficult to give justice to the depth and breadth of the analysis, following are a number of insights that may assist in understanding Alberta’s boom and bust economy.

Herb Emery and Ron Kneebone find that while Alberta incomes rose above the national average during the two previous boom periods they eventually reverted back to the Canadian average.

Authors Bev Dahlby, Kathleen Masapac and Melville McMillan note that, over the past three decades, measures of industrial volatility in Alberta and Ontario converged, meaning less volatility in Alberta’s economy.

Edward Chambers, Jason Brisbois, and Nicholas Emter observe that volatil-

ity in government spending imposes social costs: fluctuating resource revenue affects funding of government programs inducing ‘feast or famine’ and thereby exacerbating the effects of the Alberta business cycle. They also document Alberta’s poor record of productivity growth compared with the rest of Canada over the 1998-2007 period.

I opined that the Klein government’s ideological commitment to low taxes has constrained the government’s capacity to save effectively over the longterm, which increases financial instability.

Colin Busby makes a key distinction between non-renewable resource revenue and other types of revenue flowing to government.

Resource revenue is unique because it can be spent today on government services or saved for the future.

Finding a balance between saving a portion of resource revenue for the well-being of future gen-

erations versus immediate consumption is a difficult trade-off for government decision-makers.

It is therefore important to account for this source of revenue differently from other government revenue.

Stuart Landon and Constance Smith highlight the problem of revenue volatility, noting it is important for government policy to stabilize the Alberta economy, rather than to increase economic instability. Landon and Smith advocate a savings fund that would receive volatile resource revenue and return to the government’s general fund a constant fraction of the fund’s money thus stabilizing revenue flows.

In Al O’Brien’s review of Alberta’s expenditure record, he observes that both political leadership and public consensus are crucial to success in meeting fiscal challenges.

Stephen Duckett, Gordon Kramer, and Liesje Sarnecki’s examination of Alberta’s health system over the past 15 years docu-

ments an over-investment in acute medical care (hospitals) to the detriment of investments in other types of institutions like continuing care.

Staffing ratios at Alberta hospitals are higher than in other provinces and high salaries of physicians and nurses produce the highest per capita spending in Canada (excluding Newfoundland and Labrador).

The authors, however, find that Albertans’ health outcomes are not appreciably better than in other Canadian provinces.

While written for academics and policy-makers it is a highly relevant study of the key challenges facing Alberta’s political economy. In particular, it offers the current government sound, evidence-based, research about the causes and solutions to Alberta`s current fiscal vulnerability.

Come back Friday night for the resoundingly successful Best Summer Ever Concert series held on the Ross Street Patio the first Friday of every month, as again local bands grace a temporarily constructed stage set up on the patio. Come early, grab a bite from one of the many wonderful restaurants (or food trucks!) and pull up a lawn chair, provided by the City.

There has been extensive revitalization work in our downtown core, increasing walkability and creating a vibrant atmosphere where people come together in pedestrian and family friendly splendour.

Our core has been transformed into a community space that hasn’t been seen in this City for decades, and first up on the list of reasons for this success is the Ross Street Patio. Launched as a pilot project last year, and brought back by popular demand this year, the Ross Street Patio is

Ward system needed, says reader The municipal election is upon us.

Signs are going up. Slogans, clichés and all kinds of words will be thrown out. Experience, Leadership, Visionary, Communication, Caring, for example are hard to quantify, but look good.

The word that is important is “ACCOUNTABILITY” and one of the main reasons that we should move into a ward system.

The ward question is on the ballot this year but will not be implemented before the election in 2017, when our City’s population would be around 120,000.

Under the current system; who would be responsible and held accountable for deteriorating infrastructure in Glendale, misaligned traffic patterns in Deer Park, noise issues in Timberlake etc.? We know who and it will always be “The Other Guy.” We do in fact have an unofficial ward system; it is defined by special interest groups, like the Downtown Business Association for example.

These special interest groups and advocates have the City council’s ear and unfortunately have enormous influence but represent only a small minority of citizens. While the majorities are ignored, they are still paying the bills.

I asked a councilor why there was no response to my question and the answer was: “I thought someone else was going to reply.”

That is the problem with having the “at-large system” in a city of this size - no one takes responsibility and no one is there-

fore held accountable.

Earlier this year a motion was brought forward to have a plebiscite on asking the citizens if they wanted a ward system as their method of representational municipal governance, but most of the councilors voted against the motion.

It is too important an issue for the unwashed population to decide, we will decide how the city will be governed.

A group of about 500 citizens banded together to organize a petition for 10,000 signatures to get the council to just ask the question of how the citizens of Red Deer want to be governed.

The councilors were gobsmacked, they did not realize how important the fundamentals of democracy were to the citizens and they recanted and now we are having the question.

The ward system for accountability is a simple slogan, and includes the big word of accountability which is sorely lacking.

Politicians dislike the ward system because their vote are usually in clumps throughout the city and in a ward system they would be more easily held accountable. The people of Red Deer just want a name or two to call when an issue comes up that interferes with their lives.

I believe for true accountability we need to start on the road to a ward system by the year 2017. On Oct. 21, I will be voting for eight councilors, one mayor, six school board trustees and for the ward system.

With the October Municipal Election looming, we’ve noticed many new City Council candidates declaring an opposition to this award winning, city-enhancing community space, and we at the Red Deer Arts Council are urging our membership, and all forward-thinking citizens to launch a letter writing campaign in support of this valuable addition to our core.

Write your City council. Write your Mayor.

They won’t know your thoughts unless you tell them. It’s up to us, the residents of this City, to guide their decisions. In this case, it’s imperative. And easy. Six words is all it takes; “I support the Ross Street Patio.” Your voice matters.

Urban cycling in Red Deer Over the past year there has been some heated debates about the whole bike lane pilot project and its relevance for Red Deer, as if Red Deer is somehow relegated to act differently than other places.

I will go through some arguments against a few points of interest: - One can only cycle for four to six months of the year. Many Scandinavian countries have higher rates of cycling with comparable seasons. Additionally, not seeing the lines during the winter months are not a problem. How have cars driven on a fourlane road during the winter months without seeing the lines for all these years?

-Very few people use the bike lanes. If we take a look at how many people rode on the street prior to the implementation of the lanes, then we would see an increase in riders today. Based off my limited ex-

perience I saw maybe three riders using the road to cycle whereas after the bike lanes came into effect I saw a minimum of 15 people using them. That is a 400% increase. I would say the bicycle lanes are creating more cyclists, and in time can create more.

- Bike lanes cause too much congestion. Many say that taking away a lane in each direction has contributed to the congestion, especially before and after school. The bicycle lanes act as a traffic calming measure. One can also notice there were no bike lanes implemented on major roadways, only roads that go 50 km/h or less.

Hydroponic gardening is the focus at The GrowZone

Hydroponics is described as a subset of hydroculture and is a method of growing plants using mineral nutrient solutions in water - without soil. Soil acts as a mineral nutrient reservoir but the soil itself is not essential to plant growth.

Local children benefit from Aspire programs

BY KIRSTEN PALARDY Red Deer Express It’s a special time of year for children in Red Deer with special needs as Aspire Special Needs Resource Centre begins another year of their therapy based pre-school program.

“It’s a program for children who are aged two and a half to six years who may be diagnosed with some type of delay. We run two classrooms in the pre-school and have 56

children per year in the program,” said Aspire’s Executive Director Michelle Sluchinski.

The name Aspire is new to the organization which was formerly known as Children’s Services Centre (CSC) and Sluchinski said it’s a transition for a lot of people to get used to the new name.

It’s not just the name Aspire that is new either, Sluchinski started with Aspire as the executive director in November of 2012 and she said it’s nearing that one-year mark, but she still feels new.

“It’s like you have to complete the whole year’s cycle before you stop being new.”

However, she said she is very excited about the new year in the pre-school program due to the successes it has seen in the past.

Another program that Sluchinski said is vital to the Red Deer community and is unique to Aspire is the TAC program.

“It’s really an assessment and diagnostic program. It’s the Trans-disciplinary Assessment and Consultation program.”

She said what the TAC program offers is a six week inclass program where parents bring their child to an assessment team.

“These are parents who aren’t sure what is up, but they know they have questions about their child. During the program a team of teachers, occupational therapists, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and behavioural specialists observe and play with the child,” said Sluchinski.

The goal of the program is for the team of specialists to report back to the parent things that they saw in their time with the child.

“They are really just trying to understand what might be happening with the child and give parents a report on their child’s strengths. It’s just a great program, and very unique.”

Aspire is also known in the community for their You Can Ride Two program which teaches and encourages special needs children to ride a bicycle by teaching the basics.

“The program is coming in to its third year this coming spring and has really shown a lot of success.”

As executive director, Sluchinski said she has goals for Aspire but that she came in with a background of 20-plus years in fund development.

“The organization has a priority of growth through fund development, so it was just a great fit. It went from meeting the previous executive director to an opening of an opportunity that I’ve since fallen in love with.”

One of her goals as executive director includes developing sustainable funds.

She said the community of parents of the children have great needs and would love to see more and varied programming.

“We have an amazing staff component that are very qualified and smart, and we could offer so much more if we had the capacity.”

Sluchinski added that the organization is always looking for volunteers for events including their Evening of Decadent Desserts coming up in May. “We will be needing volunteers to sell raffle tickets and help with the event for sure. We have a family of people from Aspire that help from year to year, but we are always looking to expand that family.”

Autumn polio outbreaks in Central Alberta Late summer and early fall can often be a very pleasant time of year.

DAWE There is often warm dry weather. The trees and shrubs start turning colour. The rural areas are a bevy of activity as another harvest gets underway. Even the onset of frost can be welcome as it eliminates the last of the mosquitoes.

However, up until 60 years ago, this time of year was also a time of quiet terror. Late summer and early fall were generally the time of year when the terrible polio epidemics used to strike, bringing paralysis and sometimes death.

The victims were usually young children.

Polio is a viral disease which has been around since time immemorial. However, for reasons not completely understood, it seemed to become more virulent during the ďŹ rst part of the twentieth century.

Initially, it seemed to strike the hardest with the very young.

Hence, many referred to it as in-

fantile paralysis. As the century progressed, the disease became more and more common among older children and adults.

Polio would strike after a person had a chill and/or had been recently swimming. The ďŹ rst symptoms resembled the â€˜ďŹ‚u and included fever, coughing, and gastrointestinal upset’. Stiffness and weakness of the muscles would then set in. In severe cases, there was extensive paralysis, often making it difďŹ cult, if not impossible, for the victims to be able to breathe on their own.

The ďŹ rst outbreaks in Central Alberta appeared 100 years ago.

People blamed stable ies, mosquitoes and sometimes bad milk for the spread of the disease. Doctors had very little to offer in the way of treatment. Fortunately, cases remained fairly rare.

After a small outbreak in 1912-1913, Red Deer did not have any reported cases for nearly 15 years. Then, in the summer of 1927, a signiďŹ cant outbreak hit.

The ďŹ rst children to be aficted lived in the Blackfalds and Lacombe area. Soon, there were cases in Red Deer as well.

The Red Deer schools were suddenly closed on Sept. 15.

All gatherings of children, under the age of 18, were prohibited.

There were annual cases of polio after that, but the next epidemic struck in late summer 1935. Schools opened on Sept. 3, but had to be closed on Sept. 12.

The high school reopened on Sept. 23 with school for the younger grades resuming shortly thereafter.

The worst recorded polio epidemic in Alberta’s history started in the summer of 1952, but became particularly widespread and deadly in the summer of 1953.

In the latter year, the opening of schools was delayed until

mid-September. The provincial authorities even asked the universities, colleges, technical and business schools to keep any students who were 16 years old out of classes for the time being.

In Red Deer, the matron of the Red Deer Hospital asked staff not to talk about the number of polio patients in order to reduce any public panic. Special isolation rooms were created for treatment. The local theatres and the public swimming pool were also closed in addition to the schools.

Tragically, there were eight deaths recorded in Red Deer and area before the epidemic ďŹ nally

abated. In several other cases, patients were left permanently paralyzed.

Fortunately, in 1953-1954, Dr. Jonas Salk developed an effective polio vaccine. In 1962, an oral vaccine developed by Dr. Albert Sabin became widely available.

The number of polio cases dropped dramatically. In 1988, the Rotary Foundation, together with the World Health Organization and UNICEF began a campaign called Polio Plus to totally eliminate the disease world-wide.

While the goal has not yet been attained, polio has now disappeared in most of the world.

Blackfalds RCMP are reminding vehicle owners to lock their vehicles as the thefts from motor vehicles are crimes of opportunity and many can be prevented by locking your vehicles.

On Sept. 5 at about 2:25 a.m. an off duty RCMP member advised Blackfalds detachment that a female was going into unlocked vehicles on Chinook St. While awaiting the arrival of Blackfalds members the off duty member approached the female, who at this time was in a motor vehicle, and questioned her as to what she was doing.

The female then fled in the 2013 Dodge Avenger which police determined was stolen from a residence in Red Deer earlier that evening.

At 2:50 a.m. Blackfalds RCMP conducted a traffic stop on the 2013 Dodge Avenger with a 21-year-old male driver and an 18-year-old female passenger.

Both were arrested without incident. The 2013 Dodge Avenger was returned to the owner and no items were stolen from the vehicles entered.

The male had outstanding Criminal Code warrants from Red Deer and will be charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance and two breach of probations.

The female will be charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, possession of a controlled substance, mischief and fail to comply with release documents.

PAIR ARRESTED IN THEFTS On Sept. 4th at approximately 1:10 p.m., Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a suspicious vehicle complaint in the area of Range Road 31 and Rainy Creek Road.

The caller reported seeing two suspicious males with a broken down orange Dodge Challenger.

One of the males was observed breaking into a barn on an adjacent property and stealing a dirt bike. It was determined that the Challenger had been stolen from Blackfalds that morning and later involved in a gas and dash and assault at the Sylvan Lake Esso.

Police arrived and took one male into custody at the car.

A short time later, with the assistance of the Lacombe County Patrol and the Blackfalds RCMP, the second male was arrested with the stolen dirt bike in the area of Aspelund Road and Range Road 283.

Arrested were Florian Poitra, 31, of Red Deer and Jesse Bissonnette, 28, of Blackfalds.

possession of stolen property over $5,000, theft under $5,000, break and enter and theft and failing to comply with several conditions of a recognizance.

In addition, Poitra was also charged with possession of a controlled substance (heroin) and Bissonnette was charged with assault.

Police also recovered a small amount of jewelry believed to have possibly been stolen in a recent break and enter.

No one was injured as a result of these incidents.

Twenty-two year old Weston Kleigh Pickford of Red Deer had numerous outstanding warrants and has additionally been charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault of a police officer, flight from a peace officer and dangerous operation of motor vehicle.

From the Red Deer City RCMP, charges included resist arrest, assault of a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from peace officer, possession of breakin instruments and breach of probation.

MAN CHARGED AFTER PURSUIT

LABOUR DAY WEEKEND REPORT

On Sept. 4th, a Red Deer City Traffic Enforcement Officer conducted a traffic stop and was assaulted by the driver of the vehicle who then fled the scene.

The identity of the driver was obtained prior to the suspect fleeing in his vehicle.

Police were not able to immediately locate the suspect and a warrant for his arrest was obtained.

At about 11:30 p.m., the Lacombe Police Service was made aware of the outstanding warrant.

They also received information that the suspect was possibly at a residence in Lacombe and was armed with a gun.

Three Lacombe Police Service members responded to the area in southeast Lacombe in an effort to locate the male.

Officers approached the residence on foot and observed the male getting into a vehicle.

Despite being ordered to stop, the male attempted to strike both officers with the vehicle as he fled the area.

Both officers narrowly escaped serious injury.

The male drove west on 50th Ave. in Lacombe to Hwy. 2.

He was traveling at a high rate of speed and was pursued south towards the City of Red Deer.

The pursuit was turned over to Red Deer City RCMP. The vehicle entered the City limits and the police successfully utilized a tire deflation device to demobilize the vehicle.

The driver attempted to continue fleeing but eventually the vehicle came to a stop against a tree and ignited.

The driver was arrested without incident and Red Deer Emergency Services was dispatched immediately to tend to the vehicle fire.

The male driver was confirmed to be the same individual who assaulted the Red Deer City traffic enforcement officer earlier in the day.

Superintendent Howard Eaton, officer–incharge, RCMP, ‘K’ Division Traffic Services, and Superintendent Rick Gardner of the Alberta Sheriffs South Operations praised Alberta drivers for their over-all good driving during the recent long weekend.

Integrated Traffic Unit members were busy conducing checkstops and traffic operations at various locations across the province, primarily focusing on dangerous behaviours including impaired driving, unsafe speed, nonuse of seat belts and distracted driving.

“Given that road and weather conditions were perfect and the significant increase in traffic volume, most Albertans were responsible safe drivers and enjoyed a great long weekend.” said Supt. Eaton.

Unfortunately there were some individuals who ignored common sense and placed others travelers at risk with their dangerous behaviours.

The following are examples of situations encountered by Integrated Traffic Unit members over the weekend: - 36-year-old male was caught driving his motorcycle at 181 km/h in 110 km/h on QE II near Carstairs.

Memorial tennis tourney runs this weekend

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Honouring the memory of a local woman who had a passion for tennis, the fifth annual Thelma Smith Memorial Tournament runs this Saturday at the Red Deer Tennis Club.

This year’s event, which begins at 9 a.m., is in honour of club member Dick Huddleston’s parents – Bill and Isabel Huddleston, who were also dedicated members of the Club at one time as well.

The day wraps up with a potluck supper after the tourney ends around 5 p.m. And those who can’t make it to the tourney are encouraged to attend the potluck supper but they of course must bring along a dish.

Ultimately, it’s a wonderful time for members young and old to get together, play some tennis and just catch up with each other. There is also a time set apart to honour the ones who the particular tournament is in honour of.

“It’s a very popular tournament,” said long-time club member Mary Gardiner, who has been a part of the organization for about 40 years herself. Last year, between 45 to 50 players took part. “We try and honour one or two each year. I

play around the province, and no other club does that.

“We just want to remember people that have built and supported this club over the years.”

The tournament will be held with the same format as previous years, which was started in memory of Thelma Smith, who passed away in June of 2009. Smith was a dedicated supporter of the Red Deer Tennis Club, and it was decided an annual tennis tourney was a fitting way to honour her many years of involvement as a fan and a player.

Meanwhile, players are expected to be of all levels from advanced to intermediate to beginner.

Organizers team up to help those with Alzheimer’s The search is on for those willing to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories by hosting a Coffee Break® at home, in the community or at work.

The Alzheimer Society is encouraging local residents to get involved in its annual flagship fundraising campaign this September and put on a pot of coffee in support of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, which affect more than 46,000 Albertans.

Hosting a Coffee Break is fun, rewarding and a great way to bring friends, colleagues, communities and corporations together so the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories can continue to expand and deliver essential programs and services, organizers say.

No donation is too big or too small for a cup of coffee, and monies raised stay in Central Alberta.

“Connecting people with dementia and their caregivers to information and support in the earliest stages of the disease is absolutely critical,” says Bill Gaudette, CEO of the Alzheimer Society of Alberta & NWT. “We know that caregivers have a herculean task but we offer many services that can help them and the person they are caring for prepare for every stage of the disease and make plans for the future,” he said.

“These services are also important to help keep people with dementia active and in their homes for as long as possible.”

Breakfast programs land donation

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Members of the community came together Monday morning for the announcement of a $14,000 donation to the Red Deer Public School District on behalf of the Build a Kid to Cure and Golf a Kid To Cure organizations.

The donation came after the organizations approached the schools asking how they could help.

“We sent a wish list to the Build a Cure Foundation, feeling like a kid at Christmas,” said Mark Jones, principal of Central Middle School.

He added that they totaled the costs of the food programs and sent it onward.

“You never expect to get all of what you asked for, but you (Build a Cure Foundation) got it all for us,” he told representatives.

The money will be put towards breakfast and snack programs in six of the City’s schools.

“Often times we will give students a glass of milk in the morning and it will be the first glass of milk they’ve drank since the day before when they were here,” explained Jones. “And it’s not through any fault of their own, but we just live in a busy society where mornings are busy times when you’re trying to get ready for work and school.”

The programs aim to help students start their day off right by ensuring that they get an adequate meal before school.

“There are students all over that come

to school in the morning without a proper meal to start their day so this money helps us to provide that proper meal to our students,” said Jones.

He stated that the food programs offered in schools offer vast benefits to their students’ needs aside from easing their hunger.

“We’ve noticed huge amounts of improvement in students’ attendance since we’ve started this program,” said Jones, adding that “Students are arriving on time or early because they know in order to have the program they have to be here before the school bell rings.”

Not only are students more likely to be on time, schools with food programs also notice a higher level in academic standings in students who are ensured breakfast before class.

The food programs offer a full range of breakfast foods such as toast, cereal, milk, cheese and all sorts of juices and fruit.

“Truly from the bottom of the students’ hearts and their stomachs too, we wish to thank you for thinking of us because it allows us to put our breakfast coordinators at ease that the money is there because we don’t have to be out there pounding the pavement to make it happen. So this money is truly a gift,” said Jones.

“It means a lot to a whole host of students who otherwise wouldn’t get breakfast, so on behalf of our schools and students we wish to thank the Foundation because you have truly touched their lives today. “ jswan@reddeerexpress.com

room. Citizens are reminded to use extra caution in and around the Red Deer River.

“At this time of year, water on the river typically flows anywhere from 40 to 60 cubic metres per second,” said Karen Mann, emergency management coordinator.

“As a result of the increased precipitation throughout the province over the weekend, we could see an increase to anywhere from 150 to 300 cubic metres per second.

We want people to be careful near the river banks, especially in places like Three Mile Bend and Fort Normandeau.”

Increased water flows could also result in additional debris, which is hazardous to anyone in a watercraft.

Boaters are reminded to wear approved lifejackets at all times.

“We want people to enjoy the river, but they need to observe the conditions before heading out on the water, especially when it comes to the flow of the river,” said Mann. “Know your limitations, refrain from alcohol consumption and supervise pets, children and teens closely.”

With the increased flow, water levels may rise slightly, but no flooding is expected in the area.

If you see anyone in distress or experiencing difficulties on the water, call 9-1-1 immediately.

2013 RED CHALLENGE UNDERWAY Red Deer College, the City of Red Deer, Red Deer RED, Alberta Innovations, Olds College and Community Futures Central Alberta are excited to announce the 2013 RED Challenge.

This contest is designed to encourage local entrepreneurs to pursue innovative business ideas that have a technology, science or knowledge-based focus.

“We are looking forward to another year of exciting submissions. There are many entrepreneurs in Central Alberta with great ideas, and the RED Challenge gives

them the platform they need to turn those ideas into reality” said Alicia Cafferata, RED Challenge coordinator/ project coordinator for RDC in the Applied Research and Innovation department.

The contest is open to students of all ages who are currently enrolled in post secondary education, or who are no more than one year postgraduate.

RED DEER ON AIR CANADA’S MAP With last week’s departure of Air Canada Express flight AC7207 from Red Deer to Calgary, Central Alberta officially became part of Air Canada’s global network of more than 175 destinations on five continents.

21. The youth category is open to students Grade 10-12. Each student must have an adult chaperone as their team member. Students will obtain pledges to a minimum of $100 in order to be entered into the draw to compete in the race. Top 10 students with the highest pledges will get to compete in the race.

Ten more contestants will be drawn from the remaining entries. All pledge forms and funds must be submitted by Sept. 13 at noon. There is also an adult category open to teams of two for anyone over 18. Each team must pay $750 or must receive $750 in pledges. First teams to meet these requirements and sign up will be entered. Entries will be capped at 20 teams. The race begins at Westerner Park with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and race start time immediately at 10 a.m. The race end is anticipated to be around 4 p.m. with a BBQ dinner available for spectators at a minimal cost.

There will be door prizes and presentations at the finale as well. Contestants are allowed to have non-motorized wheels as transportation if they choose.

Spare our Air campaign revs up idle free message As students get settled back in the classroom, parents are reminded to again turn the key and be idle free for the health of the environment and their children.

The Spare our Air campaign has kicked off again this fall in an effort to remind parents to turn off their vehicles while they wait to pick up the kids – both on and off school grounds.

In addition to reaching parents and other drivers through an ad campaign, the City continues to promote its idle free initiative through Idle Free Schools.

Currently, 14 schools from Red Deer have been designated idle free by participating

in any of several activities: promoting the message through school ambassadors; installing idle free signage at pickup/dropoff locations; holding an assembly; using the teachers’ guide to share activities with students; and/or including the message in newsletters. The City will meet with other schools interested in the program this year, as well as challenge all Red Deer schools to join in the idle free commitment.

Local divorce rates highest in province, stats show

BY JENNA SWAN Red Deer Express Divorce rates in Red Deer are the highest in the province, according to Alberta official statistics.

As of 2011, Red Deer had a 6.5% divorce rate, beating out Edmonton and Calgary who both held a 6.2% rate and Grande Prairie with 4.9%.

Local relationship expert, therapist and author Debra Macleod believes the oil and gas industry may be partly to blame for the rising divorce rates.

connecting people in the oilfield,” said Macleod about Red Deer. “I think the oil patch has something to do with the rates we are seeing, it’s the lifestyle people here live.”

With so many young men and in recent years women hitting the road in search of money and a future for their families, high rates of young people with vastly different schedules are seen.

“A lot of these young guys will go in to the industry in their early 20s and meet guys in their 30s and 40s who are already divorced, who are very jaded and very bitter,” she said. “They are talking to these young guys and immersing them in this atmosphere of negativity towards marriage.”

Macleod believes that successful marriages are most commonly found in those with higher levels of education and who get married later in life in their late 20s and early 30s.

“We have a population that by in large doesn’t go on to post secondary education and by result get married earlier,” said Macleod. “Then on top of that we have a lifestyle that it doesn’t matter if you are a raving genius and get married at exactly the right age, the oil field lifestyle will take its toll on any body.”

Aside from education, Macleod believes that the older the couple is when they get married, the less likely chance there will be of a divorce. “One of the best indicators of marital success is getting married later when you are 28 and up and you know who you are as a person, as opposed to two people who still don’t know who they are as people getting married,” said Macleod.

“You still don’t have time to find and create yourself as a person when you are in your early 20s, so you are trying to do that with someone and it’s like two cyclones in a blender.”

Through her line of work counseling couples, Macleod also sees many whose issues derive from money due to the higher average earning of those in the Alberta oilfield.

“When you fight about money, you fight about everything,” she said.

“If you fight about money it affects everything, the bedroom, your parenting, your communication and infuses right through everything in your life.”

According to the Canadian Financial Post, as of 2010, the average salary for a male in the Canadian oilfield was $128,700 per year and has been on the rise ever since.

Often times Macleod will see a lack of communication

between her clients when it comes to money. An instance where a man rolls driving a ‘$70,000 lifted pick up’ to a session and the wife is throwing a tantrum because she wasn’t consulted about it is a prime example of money issues facing couples in the oilfield.

“They are making all of this money and blowing it all and it’s not leaving them with a true sense of partnership in their marriages,” explains Macleod. “If you are under the age of 30 and making over $100,000 a year, you need to be hiring a financial planner to handle your money because money is a huge thing in relationships.”

Macleod often sees those who are struggling with debt although they are making well over the average Canadian household income.

“They get a lot of money too soon and they don’t know what to do with it,” said Macleod.

“It doesn’t matter how much money you make, it’s about how much you keep. So we see very high debt ratios in these young people in that industry.”

With the often hectic schedules facing those in the oilfield with their partners working away for weeks at a time, Macleod also recognized that many of the partners who were left at home to care for the children lacked a sense of appreciation in the relationship. “You have a man coming home to his wife telling him ‘Take these kids off my hands - they’ve been driving me crazy for the last 21 days’,” said Macleod.

“But the man just walked through the door after having worked very hard for that time and his feet are practically still frozen from working outside in the cold and he needs time to settle in.”

From this Macleod sees a negative sense of competition in couples, as they compete for alone time and a sense of recognition from their partner.

Macleod suggests that instead couples should start competing to fulfill each other’s needs to feel appreciated instead of trying to have their own met.

Meanwhile, the ongoing trend of divorce continues to rise, and is one that many like Macleod wish to see reversed.

“I think that if people are willing to step back and view their role in the relationship and have some humility and are willing to compete to meet their partner’s needs, and manage their money intelligently then they have way better chances of a successful marriage.” jswan@reddeerexpress.com

side from a tail wind that pushed riders almost an hour ahead of schedule, participants in the Tour of Alberta’s stop in Red Deer finished Stage 2 of the event strongly.

Starting in Devon at around 10:50 a.m., the group of elite cyclists pushed onward riding with the wind and arrived in the City much earlier than volunteers had expected.

Viewers watched as they made their way into Red Deer onto 30th Ave. and continued down Ross St. and up Michener Hill three times.

With the wind pushing them forward, two riders broke away from the pack.

Swiss rider Silvan Dillier and Serghei Tvetcov of Moldova broke away from the pack early in the race before reaching Red Deer and kept up their speed to leave Dillier in first and Tvetcov in second.

Peter Sagan, winner of Stage 1 which ended in Edmonton, finished third leaving him in first place overall after the end of Stage 2.

As the race continued onto Calgary and Drumheller for Stages 3, 4 and 5, an Australian racer proved to have what it took to take home the champion title.

Sagan also finished first in Stage 5, but it wasn’t enough to give him the overall title.

Local author celebrates publishing of first novel

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Red Deer Express A local author is celebrating a milestone in her writing career.

Lacombe’s Jennifer Quist is the author of Love Letters of the Angels of Death, her first published novel.

Quist said that, while publishing is an important and exciting step in her career as an author, it is not the end of the journey.

“Publishing is not the end of the road, it’s like the beginning,” said Quist.

“Getting the publisher is like getting the hookup and then you have to turn around and make a career out of it.”

Things have changed a bit for Quist since being published.

She said she has worked from home as a writer while raising kids for the past 17 years. As such, Quist said that many people with jobs outside the home have viewed her career as little more than a pastime.

“When you are in that position, you are often thought of as a housewife

with a cute hobby,” said Quist.

She added that after she was published, many who had viewed her in that light were taking her career as a writer much more seriously.

Love Letters of the Angels of Death is a story inspired by true events that Quist experienced firsthand.

The novel begins with the protagonist couple discovering the decomposing remains of the husband’s mother in her mobile home.

About nine years ago, Quist had a similar experience when her husband’s father had not been seen in several days and was eventually discovered in his apartment, having died several days before.

“It’s actually quite toned down in the novel, what it was really like,” said Quist.

“In fact, everything in the novel that was inspired from real life had to be toned down.”

Quist added that some of the most obscure stories in the novel are the ones that are inspired by truth and are the ones that are the

least believable for many readers.

Like many writers, Quist said she had long had a goal to write a novel.

However, as she got older, she discovered that she had few experiences to write about.

After the experience with her father-in-law, Quist found the subject of her first novel.

While Quist said her novel is not about death per se, it does deal quite a bit with the often uncomfortable and awkward topic.

“I wouldn’t say I’m comfortable with death, but I have an affinity for it that I don’t see in a lot of other people,” said Quist. She added that she often speaks at funerals and has a running joke with a friend of hers that they will one day open a funeral home together.

Instead, Quist said the book is about overcoming the sadness of death.

Despite the intense sorrow and trauma that is associated with death, Quist said, people are still able to go on living happy lives and are able to overcome death

when it happens in their lives while ignoring their own inevitable deaths.

“I didn’t write the book with a message,” said Quist. “But if it has one I think it would be that there are things that are inevitable, but that you can transcend enough to get by and have a happy life.”

Where she got the idea for the title came from, Quist can’t say.

She said it just came to her while she was doing her hair one morning.

She added that using the word ‘letters’ in the title (even though there is no correspondence in the book) might make it easier for reading for those who find reading in the second person difficult.

Love Letters of the Angels of Death is Quist’s first published book, but she said she has been writing most of her life.

She said that as a child, some of her teachers commented on her talent as a writer but Quist decided not to study literature in her post-secondary education, opting instead for a degree in sociology.

She added that, for the most part, she experienced the same difficulties everyone else looking to get a book published does.

“What sets published writers apart from unpublished writers is audacity.”

Quist added that she does not completely understand why people have problems reading in the second person when most of the stories we tell each other are

in the second person, love songs on the radio are in second person and communication is in second person.

She added that, while writing in the second person is not recommended by many writers, the point of art is to make exceptions.

A hearing test is painless and thorough. Medical and hearing history will be reviewed and a simple test administered. In a sound booth, through a set of earphones, a series of beeps, which vary in tone and volume will be presented in each ear separately. This gives a profile of hearing, which is called an audiogram. Individual word and speech testing is also presented to determine comfort and discomfort levels as well as the degree of understanding what is being heard.

Red Deer College enrolment up The

Red Deer College has welcomed more than 7,500 students enrolled in programs for the 2013/14 academic year.

Enrolment is up at total of 4% from last year, with trades and technology seeing an increase of 20%.

“This is a milestone year in our history as we celebrate 50 years of serving learners and the communities of Central Alberta,” says Joel Ward, president and CEO of RDC. “We continue to implement our bold vision for our College and region, which includes the opening

of our newest learning space, City Centre Stage, in downtown Red Deer at the end of September.”

RDC’s City Centre Stage, is designed to be a community hub where culture is created as student artists, faculty, local and visiting artists meet to learn, create and showcase work. It will also be a host venue for classes and events like the upcoming Donald School of Business Distinguished Speaker Series in October.

“The acquisition of this new space in the heart of downtown Red Deer excites us and increases

our capacity and capability to serve the needs of our communities,” says Ward. “During this summer alone, we were host to more than 19,000 community learners for workshops, courses and camps.

More space means we can offer more valuable programming in central Alberta.”

Offering the right program mix to learners in the region continues to be a priority for the College.

“What many people don’t know is that there are 2,300 students at RDC who are enrolled in University and University transfer pro-

grams that study on our campus every day – that’s one third of our student body,” says Brad Donaldson, VP Academic at RDC. “As Central Alberta grows we need to continue to grow with it and ensure we offer the learning opportunities that our communities need to thrive.”

This semester RDC welcomes 80 international students from 24 different countries and, in addition to its 7,500 credit students, will welcome some 13,000 Continuing Education learners.

Current Swell heads to City on fall tour

SONIC JOURNEY - Victoria band Current Swell brings their eclectic collection of songs to Red Deer on Oct. 6 at Bo’s Bar & Grill.

Victoria’s Current Swell are taking a break from writing and rehearsing songs from their upcoming 2014 release and are hitting the road.

Red Deer is on the list of stops, with the guys performing Oct. 6 at Bo’s Bar & Grill.

Special guests Jon and Roy will be joining Current Swell for the tour.

Current Swell (Scott Stanton, Dave Lang, Ghosty and Chris Petersen) have built a name for themselves through years of performing.

The band is currently on the road with the newest addition to their discography Long Time Ago, capturing new and old fans with their live performances. They have toured Canada many times as well as Brazil and the U.S. and have shared the stage with acts like Xavier Rudd, Bedouin Soundclash, K-OS, K’Naan, Ron Sexsmith and even the Beach Boys.

They also recently released the CD in Europe followed by a 32-day tour including stops in the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands.

This past spring the CD dropped in Australia followed by theatre shows with SOJA and two performances at the infamous Byron Bay Bluesfest that featured Iggy Pop, Paul Simon, Wilco, Bonnie Raitt, Robert

The band originally wanted to call its fourth record People Not Places, as if to signify its new lyrical direction.

“We used to write about traveling, because that’s all we did for a while,” says singer/guitarist Scott Stanton. “But on this record, we wrote mostly about people in our lives.”

Friends, acquaintances — even strangers — have been an integral aspect of Current Swell’s personal and professional development. Decidedly grass-roots, the band has developed a strong online following over the years, dating back to the independent release and promotion of its previous recordings, So I Say (2005), Trust Us Now (2007), and Protect Your Own (2009).

Steady momentum at the grass-roots level (the group’s video for its campfirefriendly single Young and Able became a word-of-mouth YouTube success in 2010) has now translated to the stage, where Current Swell shines.

tic. “The online community has always backed us,” said singer/guitarist Dave Lang, addressing the group’s considerable presence through iTunes and YouTube.

“That is a big reason for our success.”

The band, which also features drummer Chris Petersen and bassist Ghosty Boy, started its career with the most modest of expectations, playing shows in settings that ranged from backyards to beaches.

“When we first got together, we just started writing music for fun,” Stanton says. “Then we got an opportunity to perform, and then we got an opportunity to tour. It wasn’t something we ever chased too passionately at first. A lot of things just fell into place for us.”

The quartet struck upon a rhythm soon after, the size of its concerts increasing in tandem with its progressing talent.

Momentum kept Current Swell moving forward in the years that followed, culminating last summer with a Canada Day concert before 45,000 people at the B.C. Legislature, one of the largest concerts of its kind ever in Victoria.

more) suggests a band long-removed from its learning-on-the-fly early days. That didn’t happen by accident.

“We’re all much more educated and knowledgeable about our career nowadays,” Stanton says. “We feel like we know how to do this for a living.”

Despite years of careful planning and intuitive, thoughtful decisions, some things remain beyond Current Swell’s control.

Case in point: Brazil.

Through a mixture of circumstance and happenstance, the members of Current Swell are now the beneficiaries of a large and loyal following in Brazil, the largest country in South America.

The group has just returned from a tour of the country, a trek which saw Current Swell headline two large festivals in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, among the largest cities in the world.

“We’d get an e-mail here and there, ‘Please come to Brazil, I’m a huge fan,’ which was hilarious to read,” Stanton says of the group’s throng of Brazilian fans.

“But then we’d go on YouTube and there was a bunch of people covering our songs.

Someone even covered one of our music videos, lip-syncing all our lyrics.”

Red Deer College lines up stellar arts season It’s looking to be another exceptional year in regards to the performing arts at Red Deer College.

RDC’s 50th anniversary year will be a year to remember for many reasons, especially for the performing arts season line up, staff say.

The theatre season kicks off with A Comedy of Errors by William Shakespeare, which runs Oct. 10-19 in Studio A. Two sets of identical twins are separated at birth. When both sets end up in the town of Ephesus, a chain of mistaken identities and hilarious encounters with the unusual townsfolk occur. The result is one wacky and magical evening of comedy.

Next up is Alice Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, adapted by Jim DeFelice with songs by Larry Reese. This production runs Nov. 21–30 on the Arts Centre’s mainstage.

Fresh from her journey to Wonderland,

Alice begins another fantastical adventure through the looking glass. Join Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Humpty Dumpty and an assortment of silly kings and queens, and follow Alice into an imaginary world of musical adventure.

The Three Musketeers by Ken Ludwig runs Feb. 6-15 on the mainstage as well.

Young d’Artagnan, with his sister in tow, sets off for Paris to fulfill his dream of becoming a musketeer. Together with Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, they race to defend the honour of the Queen of France against the evil Cardinal Richelieu. Heroism, treachery, sword fights and, above all, honour.

Wrapping up the year’s production is Ten Lost Years by Jack Winder and Cedric Smith which is slated for April 16–19.

Musically speaking, Thursday Live Concerts will be held at 1 p.m. on Oct. 3 and 31 and March 6 on the mainstage and on Nov.

Changing the impossible to possible Experts are idiots.

Well, not all of them.

Often experts are so entrenched in their beliefs, thoughts, training and how they know things are, that they make a mistake – they shut themselves down to the possibilities of life.

History is loaded with these examples. The four minute mile was impossible. Human beings could not physically run a mile any faster than four minutes and 1.4 seconds. It had taken 32 years to go from 4:14.4 (set in 1913 by American John Paul Jones) to the record of 4:01.4 - set by Gunder Hagg from Sweden, set in 1945. Gunder’s record stood for nine years without anybody changing it. At

that time doctors, trainers, coaches and others were writing papers about how

McDERMOTT breaking the four minute mile was impossible. They could explain it through physics, wind forces, muscle response time and a whole host of other things that experts do. Then Roger Bannister ran a 3:59.4 on May 6th, 1954. His record

stood for 46 days before John Landy ran a 3:58 flat.

Then it was broken again three years later and again and again.

I have heard ‘impossible’ lots myself. When I broke my back in 1984, doctors told me that I would be in a wheelchair by age 40.

When I tore the ligaments in my ankle in 1993, doctors told me I would never run again. Five Ironman triathlons, two World Long Course Triathlon Championships, an Ultraman Triathlon and several marathons later, I am 44 years old and not in a wheelchair, thank you very much.

Experts said Theoran Fleury was too short at 5’6”, too small at 180lbs

and would never play in the NHL. As we know, he played over 1,000 games in the NHL from 1989 to 2003, and has won Olympic gold three times.

When Terry Fox lost his leg to cancer in 1977 he was told many things, by many experts. By 1979, he started training for the Marathon of Hope - his dream of running across Canada on his artificial leg.

Here’s where we have to stop and realize something; back then - the thought of this was preposterous. The artificial leg Terry had was not designed to run on at all. It was clunky, had a leather strap on it and was designed to hide underneath a pair of pants and

‘pretend to be a real leg’.

After having his leg cut off, then chemotherapy to kill any stray cancer cells in his blood stream, Terry left the hospital, bald and weak, with a dream. He started training in 1979, and could only manage short distances, working up to 1.6kms, while in agony. His dream was to run a marathon a day until he crossed our country. Experts did not approve.

Regardless, he pressed on and started in Newfoundland on April 12th. He had to deal with crazy weather, detours, hills, rain, sleet, snow, blisters, no money, and a million other things including maintenance on his prosthetic leg. He ran

5,374 kms, all the way to Thunder Bay before he felt the pain in his chest, that was soon diagnosed as lung cancer. It has been said that the cancer that cost Terry his leg, is now fully curable.

I have been running in his honour since Sept. 13th, 1981 when the very first Terry Fox Run was held and I invite you to do the same. Not only to raise money for cancer research, but just to show the experts that they need to keep an open mind.

JONES to believe that seniors just pull up the covers and fall asleep. But sex doesn’t fade from the radar at age 60, 80 or even in the nursing home. Besides, the Danes have discovered sex decreases the cost of medical care! Sure, sexual activity changes with age. You may no longer hang from the chandelier while having sex. But for some couples, slowing down and being less acrobatic enhances the experience. Besides, 50% of people over 50 are either widowed or divorced and in need of ‘tender loving care’.

liest Night of the Week was popular. But at Thorupgaarden nursing home in Copenhagen, Denmark, it’s not lonely anymore.

I couldn’t stop reading about this nursing home.

I just wish I had been a fly on the wall when staff were debating one earth-shaking proposal. They decided in their infinite wisdom that pornography had a more calming effect on seniors than Prozac. So every Saturday night pornographic videos are available on the home’s internal program.

But before my proper readers go into a state of shock, I’d suggest they sit down to hear the next decision. If some residents continue to feel lonely and remain depressed after viewing pornographic videos, there’s no need to despair. These residents can go the next step and request a prostitute be allowed to visit.

The Danes believe such measures are logical. A spokesperson for the Danish Seniors Lobby Group says pornography is healthier, more economic

and easier to use than medication. If you walk into many senior facilities on this continent, you will witness seniors half-drugged, depressed and immobile. I believe she has a point.

So how has this treatment been accepted by the Danes and residents? MajBritt, a department head at Thorupgaarden, says that sexuality is often overlooked in nursing homes.

Moreover, there’s only been one complaint since the video program started three years ago. Danish gerontologists also agree with this practice.

What about political reaction? Kudos to the Danish government which issued a report confirming that sexuality is an integral part of life for both seniors and disabled people. It agreed with the caregivers.

As many readers know, I believe that alcohol in moderation is a beneficial medicine for many patient symptoms. And that a pub in every hospital would do more good than a cartload of the pills prescribed for seniors. A wee tipple along

Kings hockey team eager to start season

BY JIM CLAGGETT Red Deer Express It’s been over a year in the making but Trevor Keeper finally has a men’s hockey team at Red Deer College.

“I watched a lot of junior hockey games last winter on top of coaching the Queens (RDC) hockey team, recruited 24 players to come to Red Deer College with some walk-ons trying out,” said the Kings head coach.

Keeper said it’s a mixed bunch coming from various programs but as a team returning to the ACAC they all come into this situation as rookies.

“I can see that they’re treating each other with respect and everyone is kind of on the same level so that definitely helps team dynamics.”

An area of comfort for the Kings will likely be in goal where Mike Salmon will be joined by former Red Deer Rebel netminder Kraymer Barnstable.

He said the highest point of his self-admitted rollercoaster of a junior career was with the Rebels and jumped at the chance to come back to a city where he made some good friends.

“I liked the idea of Red Deer College being a new team and getting a fresh start ,” he said. “I talked to Trevor and just the things he said it just sounded like a good fit for me.”

Keeper added both Barnstable and Salmon carry a lot of confidence with them and he points to Barnstable’s CIS playing time at UBC as a bonus for the Kings.

“He brings experience and maturity, not only as an athlete and a goaltender but he’s been in school and he knows what it takes to be a successful university player.”

Keeper said many junior players come out of those programs having just played hockey so to balance school with sport could be a challenge.

“I have told them already, school comes first because it doesn’t do you or the team any good if you’re not around because of grades.”

In addition to what Barnstable brings to the Kings on the ice the 23-year-old feels he might be able to be a sounding board for some of his teammates on a young team.

“I hope some of the guys can use that, ask me questions and hopefully I have the right answers for them,” he said.

“I hope to be a leader this year and lead by example. I know hockey is hockey but when you add the school aspect it’s a huge thing to add on.”

Barnstable said he likes what he’s seen from the Kings in the few practices they’ve had and feels there is no shortage of skill in front of him to put the puck in the net.

“It’s been a really fast tempo over the few days and I know once we get into systems and we’re all on the same page it will only get better.”

Keeper said he has players well over the 6 ft. mark and some under that number but all of his recruits have the common trait of being able to skate.

“From there I try to recruit guys with really good hockey sense, smart with or without the puck and guys that have character, you know, compete level regardless of size,” he said.

As for team goals in their first year Keeper said he’s fine with making the playoffs but added this team has deeper goals to shoot for.

“The team we recruited on paper, there’s lots of potential there so it’s up to the coaching staff and the players to develop the chemistry and the team situation where they can overachieve.”

Fastball team brings Comparing leagues home hardware With the start of the NFL season and the CFL past the mid-way mark the debate fires up again as to which league is better.

BY JIM CLAGGETT Red Deer Express Trudy Haraldson was half right in her prediction for a medal at the World Master Games in Italy back in early August.

The Red Deer Ladies Fastball League player said it was gold they’d be bringing home but instead the Canadian squad managed to take the bronze medal which was satisfying in its own way.

“To me, it’s your last game and you win it and you have that bronze medal. With silver that means you didn’t win your last game,” she said.

It was a rocky start to the games with the team losing both ends of a double header, getting dropped by a hard hitting Australian team and then being thumped by the other Canadian team entered which lost in the final against Italy.

Haraldson’s squad beat the Italians twice in the round robin which proved to her their team belonged over there.

The following day the players had a chance to rid themselves of the memory and replace them with others with the opening ceremonies where athletes gathered in the piazza and grouped themselves by sport, standing around for about three hours, she said.

“So we got to know a lot of people and we got to do a lot of trading back and forth with head gear and flags and whatever, just swapping back and forth with Canadian stuff.”

All athletes were then marched into the stadium being led by a band with the Italian army and local police on hand, applauding the athletes as well -- something Haraldson said was memorable.

“The streets were lined with all the locals and whoever else wanted to watch,” she said.

“It was a phenomenal feeling and it gave me goose bumps and it actually brought tears to some of our eyes.”

She said she got to meet players from other sports as well as from other parts of the world like Japan, Germany, Russia and the Czech Republic.

“People were just so friendly and outgoing, having pictures taken with each other,” she said. “You have to experience it to know what we felt like.”

In the end the experience was very satisfying and she got to cross off something from her bucket list.

“I can’t wait for the 2017 games in Auckland, New Zealand. We’ve already said we’re going to that one.”

CLAGGETT It’s a debate which has little merit as it’s comparing one brand of apple to another brand - it’s a matter of taste.

I can’t argue the athleticism of the NFL skill players and would give them an edge over the CFL but it’s all relative.

I have seen great plays made at peewee, bantam, high school, university and in the Alberta Football League with the common thread here being I was entertained and impressed.

The CFL games provide

plenty of great catches, passes, blocks and tackles on a regular basis.

Of course there is not much which can stand in the way of the NFL marketing machine as it steamrolls its fans with the hype - some of it justified and some created in order to sell swag.

Each game on either side of the 49th parallel has its pros and cons but if you dare mention to an NFL diehard you are a CFL fan you get the look like someone just made a mess in their pants.

I generally poke the bear by bringing up the NFL faults right after they’ve explained to me all the faults with the CFL. I like our bigger field with deeper end zones. It means smaller players who might not get a shot down south can use the room to be exciting additions to a team.

The three downs to get 10 yards brings in more importance on the running

game to gain yards but of course passing is the name of the game up here.

I like the movement on offence which really tests our defensive back skills.

I am so not in favour of the fair catch rule and the moving up of the kick off spot. Nothing says boring more than the build up to a kick off or punt and have no chance of any return.

The three time outs in each half are not necessary in my mind and the ability to kill 1:30 on the clock at the end of a game by kneeling down is the signal to turn the channel quickly.

One aspect the CFL has over its big brother is the fact most of the guys playing this game do so as a second job and it doesn’t detract from the level of effort given on any given Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

Yes I am a CFL fan and proud of it but I also enjoy watching the NFL games and will continue to do so. sports@reddeerexpress.com

Community Care Cottages continues to expand Private Nursing Homes & Continuing Care for Seniors

BY MARK WEBER Red Deer Express Community Care Cottages provide all the comforts of home for those seeking the best in private long-term care.

Staff offer a comfortable alternative to what’s described as ‘typical institutionalized care’ where folks can still feel isolated and lonely in spite of living in a large facility.

But with Community Care Cottages – there are two homes in Red Deer to date – the emphasis is on providing a continuation of what people have grown so used to in terms of a family-oriented, home environment. Karen Cazemier, the company’s CEO, launched Community Care Cottages last year, and so far there is one home in Edmonton and two in Red Deer’s Deer Park subdivision.

“We’re almost at full capacity with three homes,” explained Cazemier.

“The motto of the company is ‘Because Family Matters’.

“What I really want to get across is that the concept is that it’s the feeling of still living in your own home with the benefits of having all the nursing care that you need provided for you.

There are also the home-cooked meals and the family setting.

“So if an older person is moving from their own home, they’re not having the trauma of moving into an institution.

It’s catering to a smaller group of people, so it becomes like a family.”

She points out that each home has a doctor that comes in, a full-time registered nurse, 24/7 health care aids and a chef.

Each home has also been professionally decorated by an interior designer so the surroundings are inviting, warm and cozy. Staff to client ratios are kept at about one-to-four as well, ensuring residents get the particular attention they need.

Each house holds between eight to 10 residents.

As Cazemier pointed out, with a range of specialized staff, families can rest assured knowing their loved ones are in the best hands. Each home of course also provides an engaging social setting for residents. “When we live in community with other people around us, it fills the need to be able to help others around us. It also meets that need for friendship and companionship.”

It’s apparent that for Cazemier, her work isn’t just a job.

“When I look at my residents, they’re just like you and I. They have the same heart. They lived for the same dreams.

They had their children. But their bodies are ageing.

“So they need our help. What makes me passionate about this is that we are providing such a good service for them.

They don’t have to be full of trauma, stress or strain. They can enjoy the last part of their lives.”

Customer feedback has certainly been encouraging.

“The staff spend time one to one with dad every day. He loves his daily walks and helping in the garden,” said Brad Underschultz. “I can’t believe the difference it’s made to have him in a home-like setting!”

Georgia Rehill’s mother also lives in one of the cottages, and she said it’s also been a tremendously positive experience.

Don’t be wary of innovative design products My husband and I were talking tonight about ‘getting away from it all’ just travelling for a few years and seeing more of this beautiful continent we live on.

As we talked about the possibilities of becoming gypsies I realized how much fear is attached to the idea of giving it all up, but what am I so attached to?

MECKLER A client and I were discussing his recent renovation and he admitted that he was fearful about putting a vinyl plank into his home instead of actual hardwood.

This was a very interesting conversation to me as I’m completely sold on this product and its ease of maintenance. I actually

have this conversation with people on a regular basis. Years ago when hardwood shortages caused manufacturers to look at options such as engineered wood, people were resistant – fearful even!

For so many decades they had been sold on the idea that solid hardwood was the only true wood and that all these other options were inferior.

Now a few years have passed and people finally recognize that engineered and floating hardwood are still hardwood, just in a different form.

This phenomenon is also occurring in quartz and corian countertops.

For years granite was the standard, almost a socially enviable product to have in your home and people did not want (what they perceived to be) the lower standard of quartz.

As products develop and evolve it is easy to see that in some cases, quartz and similar products are superior in terms of wear,

maintenance and choice of colours. Sometimes it takes awhile for home design to become a trend.

My favourite trend right now is the faux leather, back in the 60s they called it naugahyde and by the 80s designers wouldn’t touch it with a 10-ft. drapery rod!

Everything had to be real leather or it simply wasn’t in style. Now faux finish polyurethane is available in every imaginable texture and faux animal finish.

A selection of natural tones to eye-popping brights are all being manufactured for drapery and upholstery – one of our designers did an awesome remake on a Red Deer home and left the tufted sparkly naugahyde on the bar front!

The redesign was fabulous and that throwback fabric fit perfectly into the new décor.

Repeating the above question, what are we afraid of ?

Are we afraid of bucking the trends for

fear of social disapproval or do we fear what isn’t familiar and safe?

Do we wait until we have seen it in a friend’s home or in a favourite magazine before we make a commitment to a design element or colour in our home or do we venture out and discover our own passions and delights?

I admit I wonder what people will say if we decide to risk it all and spend a few years freewheeling and I am also hesitant about getting rid of all my stuff !

We do have an unhealthy attachment to our possessions but that is topic for another article.

Change is inevitable but our strength comes from our ability to listen and respond to our authentic selves. When we are able to discover what is true and good for us instead of living our lives for the approval of others?

Burglar-proof your home According to security experts, by far, the most common threat to our home while we are back at work and school is burglary.

Burglary, by definition, is a non-confrontational crime but being victimized can leave a family feeling vulnerable and violated.

Patrice De Luca, V.P. of Marketing and Customer Care for Reliance Protectron Security Services says the first step in prevention is gaining an understanding of who commits these crimes and why.

“The majority of home and apartment burglaries occur during the daytime when most people are away at work or at school,” De Luca explained. “Burglaries also occur at night when there are obvious signs that residents are away.”

Most home burglars are young males looking for things that are small, expensive, and can easily be converted to cash.

Items like cash, jewelry, guns, watches, laptop computers, and other small electronic devices are high on the list. Quick cash is needed for living expenses and drugs. Although home burglaries may seem random in occurrence, they actually involve a careful selection process.

“This selection process is simple,” De Luca added. “They choose an unoccupied home with the easiest access, the greatest amount of cover, and with the best escape routes.”

What follows is a list of suggestions from Protectron to minimize your risk by making your home unattractive to burglars.

• The first step, according to De Luca, is to “harden the target” or make your home

more difficult to enter. “Remember burglars will simply bypass your home if it requires too much effort or requires more skill and tools than they possess,” he says.

Most burglars enter via the front, back, or garage doors. Burglars know to look inside your car for keys and other valuables so keep it locked, even inside your garage.

Use high quality Grade-1 or Grade-2 locks on exterior doors to resist twisting, prying, and lock-picking attempts.

• When on a long-term business trip, leave a car in your driveway or arrange for a neighbor to keep a car there and move it around from time to time. Have someone mow your lawn, rake leaves, or shovel snow and pick up your mail while you’re away.

• Home security systems play a crucial role in a home security plan and are very effective, if used properly, especially when monitored 24-7 by ULC-listed monitoring centres. De Luca cautions that home security systems need to be properly installed and maintained to be most effective. He recommends your home security system include a loud inside alarm, detectors at all exterior doors, and motion sensors in the main living areas.
