Soccer is a big deal in the Bulkley Valley By Nolan Kelly This year, approximately 850 players helped make up 47 teams from around the Bulkley Valley, including Telkwa, Hazelton, Smithers and Houston. The association was predominantly made up of house league teams, with a few, more competitive rep. teams. For the house league teams, the BCSA is geared toward fun and participation, rather than winning. Though teams always put their best effort forward, competition takes a back seat. The younger kids formed under-8, under-10 and under-12 house league teams that had a more informal, skill-development focus. Each team practiced once a week and participated in three different tournaments held throughout the season. With the Telkwa field under construction, Smithers held two tournaments this year, Houston one. The older, under-14 and under-18 teams played in leagues against each other, with one game and one practice scheduled per week. Winners of the older age group leagues received the Krispy Cup, a trophy made out of Rice Krispy

squares that captures the light-hearted nature of the competition. For next season, the Bulkley Valley Soccer Association is hoping to add a few more rep. teams to the fold. Additional rep. teams in the younger age groups would give more kids an opportunity to compete against other teams from the province, if they want to play at a higher level than house leagues afford.

This year in the rep. divisions, the BVSA fielded two U-18 teams, a girls U-14 team and a boys U-13 team.
Both U-18 teams capped off excellent seasons with third and fourth-place finishes at the provincial competitions. The Bulkley Valley Soccer Association wishes to thank all of the volunteers that helped make the season possible, from coaches, to team parents, to referees, to those who help maintain the field. The BVSA wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of those who donate their time. Going forward, the BVSA hopes to continue to provide families from around the Bulkley Valley with access to a low cost, family friendly, participation sport that is open to everyone.
