The Parksville Legion is closed following last week’s rain storm.

“We’re trying to get the word out to everyone, especially our members, that due to repairs following that ‘freak’ storm last Monday evening our Branch on Hirst Avenue is closed for major repairs,” said director of publicity Gale Mossman.

When manager Laura Bonner walked in Tuesday morning she noticed squishy carpets and quickly discovered extensive water standing throughout the back half of the building, two inches deep in some places.

The experts tell her it backed up through their drains and most of the affected floors will have to be torn up and replaced.

While insurance will pay for most of it, the Legion will suffer from the extended closure, which they tell her could be a couple months.

“They said they’d try to have it done by Remembrance Day,” she said.

In the meantime, they will try to open the hall part of the building — which faired pretty well — as soon as possible to allow the other groups that rely on income from bingo nights to get back up and running.

Mossman said many of their members who don’t have e-mail are showing up for scheduled activities only to discover they are closed.

Mossman said with other places closed due to the storm, including Stedmans, she said she is concerned about the impact on the downtown overall. In the meantime, they are spreading the word they are closed until further notice.

Organizer Carrie Powell-Davidson said it was an absolute success.

“We exceeded our goals by doubling our artists and our attendance.

We had over 4,200 people attend and the weather and the energy was just phenomenal,” she said.

There was a time when you could practically walk across Nile Creek on the backs of spawning pink salmon. There was also a time — not that long ago — when the watercourse was nearly devoid of fish.

Thanks to Ken Kirkby and the Nile Creek Enhancement Society though, the creek is once again near — or even beyond — its original abundance.

Taking a stoll along the banks of the creek on Thursday, Kirkby points to a swirl of pink salmon crowding each other out in a back eddy.

“This is just a tiny fraction,” he said. “The whole creek is like this for five kilometres. The numbers are staggering.”

Kirkby said this is the sixth year in a row when the number of pink salmon migrating

upstream to spawn in the Qualicum Bay-area creek has jumped dramatically.

There’s vastly more this year,” he said. “We had about 100,000 last year and all we can say this year is that there’s a lot more.”

That’s good news for the pink salmon, but also good news for other fish species, bears, eagles and the local economy.

“This is the reason the coho are coming back in big numbers,” he said. “The carcasses are conveyor belts that bring phosphorous and nitrogen into the river. Otherwise, the river is barren. Coho need the food that these carcasses produce. Now, the river is full to the gills with coho fry and smolts. As well, the cutthroat trout we thought we had lost forever are coming back.”

In order to spread the wealth around, members of the Nile Creek Enhancement Society make a point of spreading the carcasses of the spawned-out fish into the riparian area next to the river.

Transit users will notice something different when they hop on the bus this week.

That’s when the Regional District of Nanaimo Transit will switch to an updated passenger transfer system that streamlines the transfer process for riders and operators.

The new system gives riders more time to use transfers and clarifies where and when transfers can be used.

“Transfers are issued to our cash fare riders to allow them to disembark and continue their trip on another bus in the transit system,” said Daniel Pearce, manager of transit operations. “The updated

RDN Transit transfers will be valid for up to 75 minutes on one-directional travel, instead of the 60 minutes previously allowed.”

Drivers will hole-punch transfers when they are issued to riders, so riders can see exactly how much time they have to make their transit connections.

Cash fare riders who need transfers will be required to request a transfer when they board a bus and pay their fare. When connecting to another bus, riders will be asked to hand their transfers to drivers with the hole-punched route and time showing. Only transfers that have been hole-punched will be valid.

A transfer cannot be used to make a return trip.

Nadine Durante says she has no problem with people dropping off unwanted kittens at the SPCA shelter on Highway 4A, but she wants them to do it during working hours.

The reason why was demonstrated last week when an unidentified person dropped off a kitten in a cardboard box at the shelter.

Unfortunately, the box wasn’t entirely kitten-proof, so the approximately six-week-old was able to escape.

“The staff saw the empty box and started looking around the property,” Durante said. “They couldn’t find it. Another couple of staff members could hear a cat meowing, but couldn’t find out where

it was, so they set a live trap for it.

Most of us have seen it, but the cat is scared and we can’t get near it. It just skedaddles away.”

Staff were concerned about the kitten — and with good reason.

“It’s exposed to the elements and to wildlife such as bears, eagles, anything,” Durante said.

Indeed, staff were so worried about the kitten they raced to the shelter during Monday night’s violent storm and continued the search in the dark — which was interspersed with flashes of lightning, to no avail.

Since then, staff have been taking shifts to search for the kitten, which is described as grey and white, between six and seven weeks old.

“Our concern is large and we are very upset that someone would not take the responsible route and wait until we are open in order to surrender the cat,” Durante said. She noted that people leaving animals unattended at the shelter when it is not open for business could be charged with animal abandonment.

“This is not to be taken lightly,” she said. “If you have a cat you can’t look after, contact the SPCA while we are open and we will do our best to rehome the cat.”

She stressed however that the shelter is at or near capacity for cats, so owners should do their best to find homes for their kittens prior to approaching the shelter.

The latest visitor to Parksville seemed friendly and was being shown around the city works offices until he flew into a staff member’s face and made her scream.

Praying mantises are common and harmless in the tropics, but they don’t belong on Vancouver Island, confirmed UVic biology professor Neville Winchester.

City employee Stewart Whitworth said he’s known for having a good eye for detail and small creatures and he noticed the insect hanging around the city works yard last Thursday.

“It seemed friendly because it moved so

slow,” he said so they took several pictures of it and showed it around the office until it gave someone a scare and they decided to leave it outside on a tree.

There is an introduced species taking hold in the southern Okanagan, Winchester said, but the mantis religiosa found in Parksville is not known in B.C. and his best guess is that the province’s weak regulations on introduced species allowed someone to buy it as a pet.

He also suggested it is possible a recent storm carried it in from somewhere far south.

He said that while it is a predator he doesn’t believe they could establish a breeding population in the area and doesn’t think it is a big problem.

Mayors asked to lobby for BC Hydro relief JOHN HARDING

On the eve of the annual meeting of the province’s local politicians, the mayor of B.C.’s fastest-growing city is calling for help from his colleagues.

Langford Mayor Stew Young told the VictoriaTimes-Colonist recently he is incensed that BC Hydro is foisting potentially millions in additional costs on developers creating new neighbourhoods. He’s calling on mayors and councillors in the province to lobby the utility to make changes.

His comments fell on sympathetic ears in the mayor’s offices of Parksville and Qualicum Beach.

“I’m a little conflicted on this because I can see both sides,” said Parksville Mayor Chris

Burger. “The (building) sector is struggling right now across the province — obviously not in Langford though — and it’s an important sector economically.”

Burger said he expects he will hear more about this issue at the Union of B.C. Municipalities annual convention in Vancouver starting Sept. 16. He said he would support Young in his lobbying efforts and he said he would like to see BC Hydro and other authorities provide relief to developers and municipalities when projects are built with energy savings in mind.

“If indeed there are master-plan developments coming forward and if these developments are putting in significant provisions for electrical efficiencies then maybe there should be some relief (from BC Hydro) up

Qualicum Beach Mayor Teunis Westbroek said he spoke to BC Hydro about the issue. He didn’t say if he would support Young’s efforts, but he did say he believes BC Hydro is applying the same rules for all municipalities.

“It’s consistent throughout the province and it sounds reasonable to me,” said Burger.

Both local mayors spoke of the difficulty of finding a balance related to who pays for major infrastructure related to new neighbourhoods — the developers or BC Hydro and its ratepayers.

“It’s the worst thing that could happen right now,” Young told the TC. “We’re already in a tight financial mess and, realistically, I don’t think anybody’s aware of this. If you have 100 houses and it costs $1 million, it’s $10,000 a house.

So, here I am (trying to create) affordable housing and everybody’s trying to do affordable housing and, all of a sudden, BC Hydro can throw away all of the work we’ve done.”

The Times-Colonist reported BC Hydro issued a statement saying the amount the utility contributes to bringing power to new developments is determined by the Electric Tariff, which is regulated by the B.C. Utilities Commission.

“The tariff seeks to balance the costs of extending power to new developments while ensuring that existing BC Hydro ratepayers are not subsidizing infrastructure costs for private developments,” the statement said, according to the TC. “While BC Hydro’s application of the tariff has remained consistent, the issues raised by developers and the City of Langford involve a set of complex circumstances spanning a number of years that are now before the B.C. Utilities Commission for review.”

Parksville’s Burger also said his city doesn’t face the same issues facing Langford because most if not all development coming before the city is in-fill as opposed to large, master-plan neighbourhoods.

An offer by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to U.S. President Barak Obama about climate action for the oil and gas sector shouldn’t be taken at face value, says Elizabeth May. The Green Party leader made the comments at a potluck dinner for party supporters at the Coombs Agricultural Hall on Saturday.

“Stephen Harper wrote to Barak Obama to say if the Keystone pipeline goes ahead, he will bring in some form of regulatory emission reduction plan for the oil and gas industry,” she said. “The reality is that Stephen Harper has been against climate action since he was the leader of the Alliance Party — and probably before then. The first thing he did, unilaterally, was cancel the climate plan brought in by Stephane Dion and Paul Martin. It wasn’t a perfect plan, but it would have taken us very close to our Kyoto target.”

He also, she added, canceled programs that were popular with the public, including the home energy retrofit program.

“We are the only country in the G-8 that

didn’t have an opportunity to fund green issues after the 2008 financial crisis,” May said. “The only thing Stephen Harper put in the economic stimulus package for homeowners to get rebates was to address the looming threat — and I’m sure we’re all grateful he grasped the horns of this one — was ugly kitchens. You could get a rebate for a marble countertop, but not for insulation.”

Because of these and other moves, May said, the prime minister has little credibility on climate issues.

“We now have a situation where Stephen Harper has found himself in an unenviable position,” she said. “He thought the jobs argument would be enough, as well as Trans-Canada Pipeline moving their route to avoid most of the sensitive aquifers in North Dakota. He thought it was a done deal. Suddenly, Barak Obama in his second term decided to do something about climate change and said the key question on whether to approve this pipeline or not will be what the impact is on greenhouse gases.”

May said she hopes Obama won’t be gulled by the move.

“I hope Barak Obama won’t believe him unless he actually sees a regulated plan that’s in place in advance,” she said. “For the last 10 years he has said he would come up with a plan to regulate greenhouse gases, but it’s all a public relations exercise.”

2014 may be challenging Regional studies of labour demand indicate that more than 100,000 job openings are expected by 2020, but all of British Columbia’s six tourism regions could face labour shortages as early as 2014, including Parksville Qualicum Beach.

“Each region faces specific pressures within our industry,” says Arlene Keis, CEO of the company that did the research for the studies, go2hr. “Sectors ranging from food and beverage and accommodation to transportation and outdoor recreation will be affected by a combination of tourism growth, retirements, and increasing competition for workers.”

Parksville Qualicum Beach Tourism Association CEP Blain Sepos agreed.

“Our region experienced a serious shortage immediately before the recession,” Sepos told The NEWS. “Many local tourism businesses — especially the bigger accommodation properties — have been talking about the issue likely returning as the economy was projected to improve by 2014.”

More than 14,000 shortages will exist across the industry, with the highest volume existing in food and beverage, accommodation and recreation and entertainment, according to go2hr.

“Regions like Vancouver Island and the Kootenay Rockies have tourism industry employ-

ees who are older than the provincial average, creating a need for more replacement jobs,” said a news release from go2hr.

Tourism businesses and destination management and marketing organizations are being encouraged to make labour recruitment, retention and training a priority. Last fall, go2hr launched the B.C. Tourism Labour Market Strategy (TLMS) to help address critical labour needs across the province’s six tourism regions.

To help the tourism industry align workforce, training and education strategies, go2hr said it is presenting at industry gatherings, hosting meetings and workshops and providing up-to-date information to destination management organizations to pass onto their members and stakeholders. go2hr said it also offers a comprehensive website that includes a free tourism niche job board and multiple informational resources.

This research was funded in part through the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Development Agreement. Tourism Labour Market Strategy. go2hr said tourism is one of the largest resource industries in B.C., comprising 18,000 mostly small to medium-sized businesses.

“If there’s a big freshet and the fish are still in the creek, they can be washed away, but if they’re on the bank, the nutrients percolate in slowly,” Kirkby said. “They become the fertilizer department for the river.”

The result, he said, goes beyond just a healthy salmon run. Local area businesses are booming thanks to the many fishers who swarm to the area to set a hook in the abundance. Each of them, he added, spends a significant amount of money in the area.

“They all eat, they all get rooms,” he said.

The reason for this year’s abundance undoubtedly has a great deal to do with the long hours and indeed years of work done by the society to improve the creek’s habitat. However, the run also mirrors other areas, which are also seeing strong returns this fall.

“It’s a combination of many factors, some of which we know, some we don’t,” he said. “Conditions in the ocean must have been ideal, because pink salmon are thriving. They stopped counting at 50 million in Alaska.”

The vast majority of the work on Nile Creek is now completed, although the pink salmon hatchery continues to supply fry to supplement the wild spawn. However, Kirkby said he’s not entirely convinced the entire project is finished.

“When is success achieved?” he asked.

“How many runs do we need before nature says, Okay, enough? It took 50 years to destroy this river, so it might take that long to restore it.”

Kirkby’s next step will be to step away from the creek for a while to produce a book that details the steps taken by the society to bring Nile Creek back from the brink.

Fire Prevention Week Open House The Parksville Fire Department will open its doors on Saturday, October 5 from 10 am to 2 pm to recognize Fire Prevention Week.

Residents are welcome to drop by for a little fun and most importantly, to learn some possible lifesaving strategies for fire prevention.

Tours of the fire hall will be conducted by firefighters and the RCMP will be on hand to check car seats.

The fire hall is located at 160 Jensen Avenue West.

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is “Prevent Kitchen Fires©” which underscores the importance of making people aware that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home. The PVFD would like families to focus on prevention by planning ahead and integrating a few simple fire safety behaviours into everyday lives.

Highway 19A Improvements The remainder of the road works; paving, sidewalks, line painting, landscaping and activation of traffic signals is underway again and weather permitting, should be complete in early October. The traffic signals at Bay Avenue and Moilliet Street will be activated at the end of the project when all the paint lines and signal detectors have been installed.

Worth noting, the City is piloting a synthetic turf grass (Bella Turf) within the left turn median island at Bay Avenue. This turf will enable the City to save long term on maintenance and irrigation costs. We appreciate the public’s continued patience while the work continues.

Muzzling of Pit Bulls City Bylaw 1284 requires that Pit Bull owners must muzzle their dogs while on the streets or in any public place. The bylaw states that a Pit Bull Terrier, American Pit Bull Terrier, Pit Bull, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier or any dog of mixed breeding which includes any of the these breeds must be muzzled while in public.

As well as these breeds, the bylaw also defines a “vicious dog” as any dog with a known tendency or disposition to attack without provocation or has bitten another domestic animal or human without provocation.

A “vicious dog” must be muzzled on the street, in a public place or any other place that is not owned or controlled by the dog owner.

Proposed Inter-Community Business Licence Council recently approved in principal, an InterCommunity Business Licence program to create one business licence fee for qualified mobile businesses doing business in one or more participating municipality; thereby eliminating the need to purchase separate business licences for each municipality in which they operate. Under the bylaw, businesses would still purchase a Parksville business licence and then only one additional licence, $150 fee, to be able to do business in all participating municipalities.

Faulty linkage

F

ar be it for us to stop an elected official from providing catchy quotes, but we have to say Qualicum Beach Coun. Dave Willie likes to tread in murky waters.

Is it fair to link provincial and municipal politics in terms of predicting or labelling which voters cast ballots in what direction? We are not so sure.

In the May provincial election, voters clearly did not have a comfort level with the NDP, especially in Qualicum Beach. The vast majority of voters showed they did not trust the NDP to take care of the province’s economy or immediate future.

The lack of debate, or even mention, of local issues during the campaign for the Parksville-Qualicum seat in the Legislature tells us the vote here was all about the bigger provincial scene. So, does that mean people who oppose certain developments in Qualicum Beach are de facto NDP supporters who continue to cry over spilled milk? Despite Willie’s contentions, we don’t believe it’s that simple.

Provincial issues — and the majority of the publicpurse spending — generally centre around health care and education, two portfolios municipal councils don’t see much on their agendas. Towns and cities don’t have the revenue, nor the desire we guess, to delve into these monstrous files. Municipalities concentrate on issues closer to home like roads, ditches and development.

So, if you are against the latest development in downtown Qualicum Beach, does that make you an NDP supporter?

Certainly there is some overlap, especially in Qualicum Beach. But Willie’s assertion that the 32 per cent of voters in that town who cast a ballot for the NDP are all anti-development, put-a-gate-up folk is too simplistic and, frankly, pays no respect to the diversity of the people and the issues facing the town.

There is a faction in Qualicum Beach that is incredibly loud and clearly does not represent the majority of townsfolk who are progressive and open to change, including out-of-the-box thinking on development issues. This loud minority has had a long run around here, and we applaud Willie and councillors Mary Brouilette and Bill Luchtmeijer for finally providing leadership and a voice for the silent majority. But we would urge Willie to pay a little more respect to the diversity and complexity of the electorate and to better recognize the difference between municipal and provincial voting patterns.

Not a garbage caN Take a drive anywhere in rural or semi rural areas, and this is increasingly becoming the pastoral view. This pile of human discard, was collected along the side of the road, and ditch, in front of my home, approximately a 20-metre stretch.

Plastics, cigarette packages, cigarette butts, a Muscle magazine, a car mat, a running shoe, a condom, two fountain pens, tampon, a beer can, monopoly money, a container of fries, wrappers and an assortment of other nondescript items.

Since when has Errington become your own personal garbage can? This is becoming the norm, in so many rural areas.

Little Mountain’s garbage heap, and the dead end roads out here are dumping grounds. Driving, or cycling in Errington, most of the interconnecting roads are littered with human refuse.

Since when has this become the new normal? How can a person, just indiscriminately throw garbage out the window?

Planet Earth and rural ditches are not invisible places to leave unwanted belongings. It doesn’t ‘magically’ disappear. The ditches do not contain a ‘Ditch Creature’, that will devour the waste you throw it.

We are all to blame, for any garbage seen at the side of the roads.

I did not relish the idea of picking up other people’s filth, but doing nothing makes me just as guilty as the people who throw these items. It is not the sole responsibility of private companies, or city workers, to clean up the Earth.

When we keep driving by it, shaking our heads, muttering under our breath..... Take some action. It took me only 15 minutes to gather all of this, at minimal cost. We must all do this! If everyone just cleaned the small space, in front of their own home, or place of business, even just once a week, it would make a small difference.

The fact that people still litter, in this day and age, is appalling. Education is not enough. Do your small part. Take action.

a debacle brewiNg Thank you, Neil Horner, for your bold and excellent analysis of the brewing debacle in the Middle East (“Support our Troops: keep them home”, The NEWS, August 29).

It is gratifying to note that most of the U.S. allies are backing off their initial attack rhetoric.

This has culminated in the recent stunning defeat of the British Conservative coalition government’s motion to join a United States led action against Syria.

Quite obviously the first thought that is coming to the minds of most sensible people and responsible governments is “Here we go again…”

Intelligent politicians and thoughtful people are realizing that there is no clear proof as to who unleashed the gas — the Syrian government? The Syrian rebels? Al Qaeda? And how convenient it was, certainly in the case of the latter two groups, for the gas attack to coincide with the UN Observer visit.

Are we seriously to believe that the Syrian government would initiate a gas attack on its own people in tandem with a visit from a UN task force?

Tragic as the situation in Syria is, when will the United States learn to “butt out” and realize that the vast majority of circumstances that they have endeavored to resolve by force and by invasion over the years have ended in yet further misery, not only for the largely innocent peoples of the countries involved, but also for the families of the fallen military at home.

It appears that the United States considers its young women and men as simply expendable. Preserve us from a Canadian government that might feel the same way.

As Horner wrote: “Canada should have absolutely nothing to do with it. Support our troops. Keep them home.”

letters RElax about RVs I see from Tuesday’s edition of The NEWS that letter writer Richard Pacanowski is still very concerned about his neighbour’s yards and the contents of them.

I appreciate his invitation sir to take a drive around the town where I was born and raised to see what has become of it with all the unsightly luxury RVs and boats cluttering it up.

When I was a child growing up in Parksville in the 1960s and 1970s, there were few RVs in people’s yards because they couldn’t really afford them.

Perhaps a truck camper for hunting or fishing up-island.

If there was a boat bigger than a car-topper, it may have been more important to the owners than the house itself.

I’m happy to see that the residents of our little town are somewhat better off now and are enjoying the benefits of the years of hard work it takes to buy a big beautiful RV. I’m sure we would all be interested to hear from a real estate professional in regards to this idea that having large expensive toys in the yard could possibly drive down the neighbourhood’s value.

I’m not an expert in the field of property values, but I would think that having $100,000 or more worth of RVs in your yard would make the place more valuable, not less.

An RV in the yard also makes a pretty fantastic guest house for all those unfortunate people who can only take the time to visit our beautiful Island for a short time.

Welcome to our little Island paradise — I hope you are enjoying it here. I assume it’s nicer than where you came from.

Please don’t be one of those people who move somewhere new and then start complaining about what the locals are doing.

If you haven’t noticed it yet, we on the Island don’t really like being told what to do.

RVs and boats are just a natural fit here and people who have bought property shouldn’t have to pay to store

their belongings elsewhere because some grumpy people moved next door.

Relax.

Now, can we do something about yappy dogs?

When I moved into one of Parksville’s newer subdivisions some 13 odd years ago, I signed a building development contract to say that I wouldn’t do various things.

One of those things was that I wouldn’t have a recreational vehicle on my lot that extended more than a third, I believe, of its length past the front of my house.

Now it’s alright for all those people living out in the boonies to say: “what’s wrong with having an RV at your home,” etc. Well, they don’t have to live with it.

I have neighbours that I actually like, but I realize they have little respect for my feelings or property values in my area. They have a very nice RV unit which spends all the summer across their front yard.

I hate it, it looks terrible and it does affect property values and how other people look at certain areas, such as this one. Also, it creates others doing the same thing, I’ve noticed that there are quite a few RVs on my street, all out way past the front of the building.

Another factor is getting out of one’s driveway safely — it’s not so bad on my quiet street, but I’ve had a couple of surprises.

I blame the developers first, because as soon as they sell the last lot in any subdivision, they abandon all of the rules, so be wary of moving into any subdivision. The second group I blame is local government, because they couldn’t care less. They aren’t about to make any laws regarding this obvious bone of contention, you are on your own.

I know because I have tried bringing the RV problem to their attention, and my words are falling on deaf ears.

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot. Or, in this case, an eightfoot-wide, black asphalt highway where a nice and soft walking trail used to be.

I speak of the trail that runs between Laburnum Road and Canyon Crescent, paralleling the railroad.

I, and countless others, have been waiting eagerly for this trail to be reopened after it was closed over the summer to facilitate the installation of a drainage system for the new housing development at the top of Laburnum hill.

Well, the trail has finally re-opened, and it’s a black asphalt nightmare from side to side and end to end.

There are 12-inch, pea-gravel shoulders on either side of the asphalt, so that’s where I walked, heel to toe, one recent morning. Mine were not the first footsteps seeking refuge on the soft gravel and doubtless will not be the last.

My question to the Town of Qualicum Beach is: what were you thinking, that you’d be awarded accolades for providing a trail down which cyclists could ride four abreast?

Not to mention that this wide swath of pavement is just an open invitation to motorized vehicles ridden by people who don’t give a rat’s behind about your wee sign that forbids such activities.

On the other side of Qualicum Beach, between town and Bennett Road, both paved cycling and walking trails co-exist wonderfully side by side.

On the trail between Laburnum Road and Canyon Crescent, there has clearly been no thought given to or provision made for people who actually walk from point A to point B and like to do so on a soft surface.

The unthinking bureaucrats have absolutely ruined this trail for walkers in Qualicum Beach.

I would invite anyone who walks this trail and feels the same way to request of town hall that a solution be found and a compromise reached immediately.

KNOX FALL FAIR ON SATURDAY

Annual event supports some good works A highly-anticipated event on the local calendar For many weeks now, Knox United Church volunteers have been busy collecting, baking, sorting, organizing, emailing and yes, even praying, in preparation for the ninth annual Knox Fall Fair, and everyone in the area is invited to share in the fun.

The fair has come to be a highly anticipated community event, which brings together hundreds of people from the Oceanside area for a day of fun, friendship, food, entertainment and amazing bargains.

This year’s fair is being held on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Knox United Church, located at 345 Pym Street (corner of Pym and Humphrey) in Parksville.

The entire church building and parking lot will be filled with fair activities and opportunities.

Come for the pancake breakfast and stay for hamburgers, hot dogs and strawberry shortcake for lunch. You can also buy yourself some popcorn or a Dilly Bar, have a cup of Fair Trade coffee or a free glass of pure Parksville tap water.

On the grounds be sure to check out the huge garage sale, which will feature furniture; sports equipment; a plant sale and fresh produce.

There will also be lots for the kids, with children’s activities including a story tent; and live entertainment.

Head inside the church to have a look at the bake sale and preserves. There will also be a cookie walk; books; children’s clothing, toys and activities; Christmas ornaments; crafts; linens; a silent auction; women’s clothing, jewelry and accessories, and more. There is something for everyone.

Admission is free and a shuttle service will be provided from Ballenas High School. There will also be onsite parking for those with handicaps and parents with infants.

Funds raised at the Fall Fair support the ministries of Knox United Church; which include donations to local, national and international outreach organizations

Knox also provides free or highly subsidized building use for community groups, totaling approximately $25,000 per year. Finally, Knox provides programs such as Rainbows, Grief Support Group,

and Healing Ministry, all of which are open to all members of the community, free of charge.

French singing group comes out of their musical closet NEIL HORNER news@pqbnews.com

There was a time when the singers with Nous Chantons kept their music pretty much to themselves.

They sang songs in French at their various members’ houses, but they did so strictly because of their love of singing - not to perform for others.

That has all changed this year,

the fifth since Suzanne Bernard put the group together. They’ve come out of their musical closet and have begun to sing to an audience — and the result has been encouraging, to say the least.

“This year we went to sing at Long Lake Chateau in Nanaimo and they liked us so much they want to have us again,” Bernard said. “Now we want to find out if there are other local groups that are interested in having us. We

are ready to go out.”

Bernard, who moved to the area 27 years ago, created the group because of a strong desire to sing in her native French language, and the realization that she was beginning to forget some of the songs that were part of her childhood.

The group has grown to include 15 singers and the repertoire has also grown apace, with 400 songs.

“We divide it into different sections, so we have songs about Christmas, kids’ songs, folk songs and modern songs from Quebec and from France and other French-speaking countries such as Haiti,” she said. “We also do some songs in English, Spanish and Native tongues.”

Singers don’t have to be fluently bilingual to join the group, but they do need to understand the language and, above all, have

a passion for singing in French.

The group is about to start their season, with the first session kicking off on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

“We are looking for new members to join us,” she said.

“We sing every Wednesday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in different people’s homes.”

It may not be a Hollywood blockbuster, but initial response to the Qualicum Beach Museum’s oral history film is encouraging, says manager Netanja Waddell.

“We sold the first 100 DVDs of our oral history and we have more in,” Waddell said.

“The DVD was very well received. Anybody who ever lived in Qualicum Beach totally enjoyed it.”

The Oral History Project DVD features longtime Qualicum Beach residents giving their reminiscences of how life used to be in what used to be a little seaside village.

Waddell said that while they have had to stock up on a second run of DVDs, they are also looking into the future and gearing up for the second phase of the project.

“We are hoping to be able to work on phase two of oral histories,” she said.

“There’s nothing official but we are hoping to capture the whole picture of the past of Qualicum Beach and capture some First Nations oral histories. We are waiting to hear about grants but that would be a wonderful way to go.”

Families wanting to check out fall programs offered by SOS (Society of Organized Services) will have a chance to do so during the Child, Youth and Family Centre’s (CYFC) open house, September 9-13, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

“The purpose of this open house week is to give District 69 families the opportunity to meet the staff, check out the centre and learn about the wide variety of programming we offer here,” said Paulette Harcourt, CYFC manager. “It is also an opportunity for partic-

ipants to register before programming begins on September 16.”

The Child, Youth and Family Centre offers 13 programs ranging from TIC TAC (Time in Comfort for Tots & Caregivers) to teen programs, tutoring and family nights, staffed by SOS employees who specialize in working with children and youth.

“Our programming is designed in direct response to the needs of District 69,” said Renate Sutherland, SOS executive director. “Whether we are helping

an older teen transition into adulthood, providing dinner and a sense of community for a family, or talking to young girls about a healthy self-image, our programs are always evolving so they remain relevant to the needs of local residents.”

Breaking news on broken bones Osteoporosis Canada is hosting community events across the country this month to raise awareness about the seriousness of a broken bone. Not all broken bones are what they seem; sometimes, there are underlying causes that could lead to more broken bones if the individual is not properly assessed and treated.

“It is not normal when a broken bone is caused by something as simple as a slip or fall from standing height, or making a bed or even a cough or a sneeze. This type of broken bone is called a fragility fracture and can be a warning sign of osteoporosis,” said Dr. Famida Jiwa, CEO and president of Osteoporosis Canada.

Dianne Nolin is in her 60s and is living with osteoporosis. Even though Dianne had broken three bones in her spine, was in constant pain and had a number of other risk factors for osteoporosis and broken bones, such as early menopause and smoking, it

wasn’t until her doctor detected a loss of height that Nolin was finally diagnosed with osteoporosis. Once diagnosed, Nolin could make the necessary changes to maintain her bone health and get back to active living, with some precautions. She said, “You don’t need to fall to break a bone. My fractures were all from lifting something the wrong way (even the end of the mattress to change the sheets) or stretching too high to reach something. Stand tall and straight, use your knees, not your spine.”

Osteoporosis weakens bones, causing them to break more easily than normal. The challenge is that a broken bone from osteoporosis often goes undetected and therefore untreated, leaving the individual at risk of more broken bones. This is the post-fracture care gap that needs to be addressed.

Broken bones from osteoporosis usually occur in the wrist, spine, hip and shoulder and are more common

than heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined. At least one in three women and one in five men will suffer a fracture from osteoporosis in their lifetime. Fractures can lead to hospitalization, institutionalization, depression, difficulty with activities of daily living, fear of falling, fear of another broken bone, isolation and loss of mobility and independence. Fractures can even lead to death.

The Mid Island chapter meets the third Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. in the seminar room at Parksville Pharmasave. The chapter chair, Lisa Leger, invites everyone to join the group on Wed. Sept. 18 for more.

Motoring enthusiasts showed off a myriad of cars in all makes and models on Sunday, September 8 at Shanna’s Place restaurant in Errington.

There were cars from all eras for Shanna Laporte’s mini car show which was held to celebrate the eatery’s fourth anniversary and raise funds for the Society of Organized Services.

The “Wheels” event included a variety of

unique vehicles and passionate classic car owners, including Doug Scott, who hails from Qualicum Beach.

He has been restoring his shiny red and white ’56 Chevy two-door hard top Belair for the past eight years.

Scott said he has spent literally hundreds of hours tinkering on his baby and very likely he will spend hundreds of more hours in restoring it.

“They’re never done,” he said.

If there’s one thing Jennie O’Connor knows about knitters it’s that they love to give.

“Knitters give. That’s what they do,” she said.

“They make things and then they give them away.”

O’Connor, who owns the Qualicum Beach yarn store, Let’s Knit, wants to make use of that giving spirit to aid a local charity.

“We have 178 knitted squares in a couple of sizes and I need help from the public to come in for however much time they’ve got to make them into throws for Haven House.”

The shelter for abused women recently moved into the area and O’Connor adopted them as her store’s favoured

charity for 2013.

“We’ve helped them already, with various knitted items,” she said.

“We always want to help wherever possible and I thought this year a really good way to do it is to help to keep people warm.”

She said she’s unsure of exactly how many throws the squares will make, but estimates it to be around 10. She’s hoping to get the project finished within a month, so she needs some nimble-fingered people to lend their digits to the cause.

“Your skill level can be very low,” she stressed.

“All we are doing is just simply stitching the two sides together. Anybody can do it — even kids.”

Let’s Knit has been open in Qualicum Beach for just over a year and O’Connor said she has had a strong response from the community.

“There are lots of knitters

in town,” she said. “People are grateful to have a yarn shop. It has been so fun for me to get to know people and their projects every day. It’s the best.”

Let’s Knit offers a variety of courses where knitters can learn to crochet, colour stranding and sock-making using the magic loop technique, among others.

In addition, she supports a variety of knitting groups around the area.

“People like to get together and chat while they knit,” she said.

She’s hoping some of the people who come in to help with her Haven House project will likewise wish to talk.

Anyone who would like to lend a hand can drop by Let’s Knit at 211 Second Ave. West in Qualicum Beach from Tuesday to Sunday during business hours.

Area sales up 14 per cent Multiple Listing Service sales summary data for August released by the Vancouver Island Real Estate Board (VIREB) shows housing sales activity across Vancouver Island was up 38 per cent compared to last year.

The average price of a single family home sold within the VIREB region in August 2013 was $339,809, which is an increase of four per cent from the average sale price recorded in August 2012. There was a significant increase in unit sales for August 2013, where 391 units were recorded, in comparison to August 2012, when 283 single family homes sold. However, when looking at these same figures over a 12-month basis, units sold only grew by one per cent, while the average price actually dropped one per cent to $329,502.

In terms of unit sales year-over-year for the month of August, there continued to be a wide disparity among our different areas: Campbell River witnessed continued growth, reporting a 55 per cent increase; Comox Valley unit sales were up 26 per cent; Nanaimo sales spiked by 62 per cent; Parksville/Qualicum sales rose by 14 per cent; Cowichan Valley saw a 31 per cent increase, and Port Alberni/West Coast experienced the largest growth, jumping 80 per cent from last year.

Comparing August 2013 to August 2012, the average sale price in Parksville/Qualicum climbed 11 per cent to $404,998.

Dennis Wayne Erickson

June 12, 1946 – August 20, 2013 It is with great sadness that, after a long and courageous battle with cancer, Dennis has succumbed to that disease. He passed away on Tuesday, August 20th, 2013 at the age of 67. Dennis was predeceased by his wife, Cheryl; sisters, Pat and Louise; brother, Raymond; and parents Hazel and Leonard.

Lori Janet Carrington October 30, 1957 ~ August 25, 2013 After a relentless battle against cancer, it is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lori Janet Carrington. Lori passed peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, August 25, 2013. It was her incredibly positive attitude and support from family and friends that allowed her to embrace and enjoy life so well, even during her fight.

Lori is predeceased by her father, George, and sister-in-law, Bonnie. She is survived by her loving husband, Bruce, beloved children; son and daughterin-law, Joshua and Natasha, daughter, Sarah, her mother, Elsie, her sister Lisa (husband Mike), other sister, Lynn (husband Jim), and brother Russell, along with many loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lori’s greatest pleasures in life stemmed from her family and friends, and flourished in to crafts, cruising, and camping. Her loving spirit and positive outlook on life graced everyone she encountered, along with her generosity and thoughtfulness. Lori will forever be in our hearts, and on our minds. Rest Peacefully...

Generals stumble late in home opener

A sluggish start to the third period cost the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals the game Saturday night, spoiling what was otherwise a great regular season home opener.

In this, the first of 10 regular season meetings between the rivals, more than 800 fans turned out at Oceanside Place for the free home opener and were treated to a wide open, fiercely contested game, won by the Nanaimo Bucanneers 6-4.

Nanaimo opened the scoring at 1:46 of the first, and homegrown captain Travis Flug scored for Oceanside to tie it up unassisted at 3:20 with his third of the season. Brodie Smith (with assists to Flug, and Dylan Moore) fed the net at 6:50 for a 2-1 Gens lead, which is how it stood at the first intermission.

Nanaimo scored on a power-play 1:49 into the second and the teams traded rushes, checks and shots on net. Moore (from Smith and Flug), finished off a beautiful three-way passing play at 15:50 to give the Gens a 3-2 lead heading into the final frame.

The Buccaneers were on fast forward to start the third, striking for two goals in seven seconds and three in three-and-ahalf minutes, then added a fourth at 13:19 for a 6-3 lead.

Kelyn Opel (from Flug) scored shorthanded for Ocenaside with 3:45 remaining to finish the scoring.

Nanaimo outshot Oceanside 21-8 in the third period and 44-31 on the night.

Local goalie Liam Giroux was between the pipes for Oceanside.

Not lost on many of the fans Saturday was the fact the game’s two captains are both from Parksville. For the Gens, Flug, 19, is off to a torrid start, leading the team by example, playing physical while posting four goals and three assists for seven points in the first two games of the cam-

Flug’s efforts on Saturday earned him the game’s third-star honours for the second straight night.

On the Bucs’ bench, Noah Russi, who graduated from Ballenas last year, is wearing the captain’s ‘C’. At one point early in the second period, the two former teammates were both sent to the sin bin for roughing.

“I kept getting comments from their bench and stuff so I just played through it,” Russi said when asked what it was like out there, adding “going down 3-2; I knew the boys would bounce back, and wins like that will take us to the championship — I’m happy.”

Russi, 18, was signed by the Generals at

the start of last season then dealt to Nanaimo midway through the campaign as part of a trade, and the 5’11” 186 pound d-man said while he enjoyed his time with the Gens, he “couldn’t be happier with the way things worked out. I wasn’t going to play this year,” he said in the tunnel after the game “but I just had too much fun last year so I thought I’d come back. We’re a young team we’ve got a lot of skill and we work hard every night.”

IN HIS POST-GAME interview, Generals head coach and GM Brent Demerais was clearly disappointed with the final score but he was also upbeat about his team and their potential.

“I was definitely happy with the way we

played in the first 40 minutes tonight,” he said, adding the start of the third period though “was a slow, sluggish start (for us); probably the first three shifts we weren’t getting the puck out of our zone, winning the battles inside our zone. I think some of the younger guys on our team — we have 13, 17 and 16 year olds — they were looking around a little bit maybe too much.

Jitters, there was a lot going on here tonight.

But you know what, at the end of the day I really like what I see with this team, and all they’re going to do is get better.”

On the play of his fiery captain Flug, Demerais said “he’s put on about 15 pounds of muscle — he’s taking the bull by the horns and he wants everyone to follow what he does on the ice. He never quits.”

THE GENERALS OPENED their 48game Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season in Campbell River Friday, playing the Storm to a 5-4 overtime loss in front of an announced crowd of 850.

The Storm led that one 2-1 after the first and 4-1 after the second, but the Generals rallied for three unanswered goals in the third before coming up short in extras.

Flug led the charge with a hat trick.

The Gens were 0-for-4 with the man advantage, the Storm 1-for-9.

Oceanside generated 29 shots on net in that game, and Giroux stopped 52 of the 57 shots he faced.

Nanaimo improved to 2-0 on the season after beating the Storm 6-4 in their regular season home opener last Thursday in front of an announced crowd of 369, while the Gens sit at 0-1-1.

THREE GAMES ON: The Generals have three games on tap this week. Oceanside is down the road Thursday night for a rematch against the Buccaneers (7:15 p.m. start at the Nanaimo Ice Centre); in Comox Friday to take on the Glacier Kings, and return home Sunday (2:30 p.m. start) against the 1-1 Peninsula Panthers.

Ballenas Secondary School’s football teams both posted pre-season wins last week.

In Richmond on Saturday for an AA Varsity match against the Hugh Boyd Trojans, the Whalers had to dig deep to beat the hosts 14-7.

“It was a hard-fought game with both teams laying big (hits) on each other all day long,” said Whalers head coach Jeremy Conn.

The two teams played to a scoreless first quarter tie; the Trojans opened the scoring 7-0 in the second, and Ballenas bounced back when strong safety A.J. Messner made a great diving interception off a tipped pass.

The Whalers ran the ball several plays in a row to tie the game on a Garrin McDonnell QB sneak, then fullback Coltin Laplante found the endzone on a two yard TD plunge and the

Whalers were up 14-7 at the half.

Both offences moved the ball in the second half but neither could score as the Whalers’ defense preserved the win.

“That was a physical game,” said Conn. “Both teams played great on defense. I am proud of how the team responded to adversity and were able to play tough for the whole game.”

Leading the way was Laplante on defense with 12 tackles, an interception, and a recovery.

Scott Childs was the top offensive player for the Whalers with five catches for 82 yards to go along with seven tackles on defense.

IN JR VARSITY ACTION: In Nanaimo Sept. 4, the Whalers thumped the NDSS Islanders 26-6 under a sweltering sun “that was draining,” said Conn.

The young Whalers took a 13-0 lead into the second quarter, and never looked back.

According to Conn, Sam Paquette opened the scoring in that one with a 42 yard touchdown run, and Grade 10 Matt Price padded the lead when he punched one in from six yards out.

The Islanders scored in the second half to cut it to 13-6, but that would be as close as they’d get at the Whalers’ defense dug in and Price peeled off two more long TD runs of 51 and 35 yards.

It’s been a busy summer for members of the Sandy Shores Skating Club, and Parksville’s Olivia Bau jump started what amounts to a new era for the longtime local high performance program by winning a silver medal in Vancouver.

In the mix with 200 of her peers ranging in age from 7-21 at the B.C. Summer Skate Competition Aug. 15-18, and under the watchful eyes of newly hired coaches Richard O’Neill and Shannon Light, Bau, 13, parlayed her best scores of the season into a second place finish in the Juvenile Ladies U14 division.

It was O’Neill’s first major competition with the club since leaving his longtime posting in Mexico and signing on as SSSC’s new director and head coach in June.

“We’ve all been working hard. The kids put in a lot of time this summer — several hours a day five days a week — preparing for Vancouver, and for the upcoming provincials. There’s definitely an initial growth period about me learning about the kids and about them learning about me,” he said. “A lot of practice, a lot of competition simulation, a lot of training and learning new skills.”

The program involves both on ice and off ice training.

All that hard work certainly paid off in Vancouver for Bau, “who landed more difficult jumps for the first time in competition, and earned a medal for the first time in this event level,” said a proud sounding O’Neill.

“She was really pleased,” he said, pointing out his young skater is back out on the ice skating well and motivated by her recent success.

O’Neill and Light, from Parksville and an SSSC alumnni who has embraced the new role of assistant coach and head of off-ice training, took 11 skaters to Vancouver for the big comp,

and associate member Kennedy Lavertu from Port Alberni finished first in the PreNovice Ladies (U16) division.

Kennedy won both the short and long program components, repeating a gold win in her category that she earned the week before in Alberta at another major summer competition, the Wild Rose Invitational.

The Wild Rose and the B.C. Summer Skate are two of the top five summer events staged in Canada.

“Consequently,” explained O’Neill,

“both skaters are well positioned to achieve great results in the B.C. provincial championships,” slated for Vancouver in six weeks.

Additional SSSC skaters that have been training all summer and competing include Sam Davidson, Katherine Lee, Youna Uehara, Kiera Klymchuck, Tabitha Devaughn, Keyana Willard, Lydia Robertson, Kate Cameron and Indianna Berg.

A number of those young skaters are competing in what is a newly designed ‘non listing result’ format with the emphases on individual levels of merit (bronze, silver and gold) for detail components and overall value — a new approach to introducing little kids to competition.

“It’s kind of an interesting concept that’s being tried in B.C.,” said O’Neill.

“All our skaters achieved bronze or higher with many obtaining personal best’s for their performances.”

“It’s a learning curve for both coaches and skaters,” he said, “however all went well, and in addition, at the lower star skate levels, this was the first provincial competition for many of the kids, so we were all pleased with results.”

LEARN TO SKATE: SSSC’s learn to skate program starts up this fall and the club is introducing revolutionary new ‘Canskate program’ for beginners.

“I am quite excited about this introduction of the new national program, which is revolutionary — the approach is much more motivating and the fun aspects have been intensified, so as a result I think kids will be motivated to learn quicker.”

SSSC’s CanSkate starts Sept. 16 and will be offered several days a week from pre-school level to after school.

“We’ll be accepting membership ongoing.”

B.C.’s longest running beach volleyball tournament delivered the goods over the Labour Day weekend, as over 150 players including two national team members turned out for the 24th annual Volleybash.

As always, Volleybash featured a coed triples tournament on Saturday, and Sunday was same-sex doubles. Both days featured divisions for players of all levels from the Open (Pro), on down.

“We had 50 teams out on Saturday and we had exactly 60 on Sunday, so it’s one of our larger ones,” said tournament founder Shane Hyde.

On Saturday, Hyde, along with Maverick Hatch and Jamie Broder — both Islanders and members of the Canadian national beach volleyball team — went 9-1 to take top honours.

Hatch and Broder were both in Moscow competing in an FIVB tournement four days prior to Volleybash. Hatch finished ninth in Russia, and was coming off first place finishes at tournaments in Switzerland and Berlin.

Broder is currently part of the top ranked women’s doubles team in Canada, “and Hatch is right up there in the men’s.”

In other results, the Oceanside/ Nanaimo trio of Terry Palfrey, Scott Phy and Angela Manj won the SuperComp division.

ON SUNDAY Hatch teamed up with longtime Volleybash champ Alex Dechantal, going 8-1 to capture the Men’s Open division title.

In an exciting semi-final, a rematch of last year’s final, Hatch and Dechantel beat Mark Yuen and Gord Velemann for the second year.

On the women’s side Broder and former Vancouver Island University standout Danielle Hyde went unbeaten at 9-0 to take home the hardware.

“Awesome weekend,” Shane said after the sand had settled. “Obviously the weather helped, but we had a real good group of locals along with players from We Have Happy Advertisers!

“We had all the VIU women’s team here too,” said Hyde, who is heading into his 14th season as head coach of the VIU women’s volleyball team and 16th with the team, adding “all told we had 111 teams over the weekend, so pretty outstanding for little Parksville and high caliber volleyball for sure,” said Hyde, Joining the VIU women’s team this season will be Parksville standout Jenna Pearce, who was also at Volleybash.

THIS JUST IN: On Sunday Hyde made it official that Parksville has been

selected to host the 2014 and 2015 U18 Youth Beach Nationals.

“It’s been a whole process for us to put this bid in, and for us to get nationals is huge,” said Hyde.

Parksville, he points out, was awarded the two-year bid with the minimum number of courts (26) needed to be considered.

“I’ve been working with the city, we’d like to see six more courts, which would put is at 32 courts, which is the normal amount for a national championships.

“It’s a four day weekend where people from all over Western Canada will converge on Parksville, the next push will be to get the senior nationals here — that’s the longterm goal.”

Tour supporters now Tour riders Sidney North Saanich RCMP reserve constables ready to fight childhood cancer Devon MacKenzie News staff

As with many Tour de Rock riders, the motivation for Terry Curry to get involved stems from personal experiences with cancer, including a battle of his own.

Curry is the oldest rider on the tour at 66 and not only battled prostate cancer himself, after being diagnosed in 2005, but he also lost a brother to childhood cancer when he was young.

“In 1965 I lost my 15-year-old brother to leukemia,” Curry said.

“He was diagnosed in September and by June he passed away. There was no real treatment then, nothing like compared to now.”

Curry said the memories of his brother and the thought of offering hope to children battling the same disease spurred him on to apply to participate in the Tour.

“I had always wanted to ride in the Tour de Rock but events in my life just never lined up,” he said.

Curry spent 29 years with the RCMP and retired in 2007, after which he began working as a reserve constable at the airport with the Sidney North Saanich RCMP. When those positions were cut this past spring, Curry began working with the RCMP’s South Island Integrated Marine Unit. He’s thankful the stars finally aligned for him to be

able to participate in the Tour.

“I am working a few days a week doing that right now which has given me the flexibility to train for the Tour. I was lucky enough to be able to take off time in September and October for fundraising and the ride itself,” he said.

Curry’s teammate from the Saanich Peninsula, also a reserve constable with the Sidney North Saanich RCMP, is Alan Neville-Rutherford.

The two met through work connections, with Curry working as the RCMP reserve constable for the airport and Neville-Rutherford working for G4S, which handles airport security.

Personal connections with cancer are also what spurred Neville-Rutherford to get involved.

“The main motivation for me to ride this year was that I had a cousin who passed away from lymphoma a year after being diagnosed,” Neville-Rutherford said.

“We were very close. He had three teenage kids and was the same age as me so it was a real eye-opener.”

Neville-Rutherford has been a member of the Sidney North Saanich RCMP auxiliary since 2006 and an avid supporter of the Tour de Rock for many years.

“You could usually find me at the Thursday (Sidney) Night Market selling Tour de Rock T-shirts at the RCMP booth and people always asked me if I was the Tour de Rock rider,” he said.

“I’m happy to be able to say that I am now, and I’m hoping to do every-

thing I can to raise as much as possible for the pediatric cancer.”

The two teammates are training three days a week with the 19 other riders, and credit their trainers in getting them in top shape for the Tour, which begins Sept. 21.

“Neither of us ever thought we’d be able to ride the speeds and distances we do. It’s really amazing how much the trainers have helped us and guided us,” Neville-Rutherford said. “Every day we ride it’s a new challenge but a doable one, when you think about what those kids go through. At the end of the day, it really comes down to that — supporting each other as a team so we can raise as much as possible for the kids.” reporter@peninsulanewsreview.com
