Volunteering is alive and well and part of Canadian culture

Whenever you are out in a crowd, shopping at the mall or cheering at a hockey game, stop and think. Every second person in this room will volunteer with a non-profit organization this year.

Only 1 in 10, well 13 percent actually, have never volunteered.

And the number of volunteers is growing faster than Canada’s population, according to the Statistics Canada 2013 Volunteering in Canada: Canadian Social Trends report.

That is amazing.

In BC, we rank second among the 13 provinces and territories for our average number of volunteer hours per year and 7th for our rate of volunteering.

Here in the Central Okanagan 53% of us volunteer and our average annual volunteer hours tops 248 hours! Most of us get involved because of family, friends, neighbours or coworkers. We hear about what they are doing and are asked to join them.

However the self-motivated volunteers, about 4 in 10, who take the initiative to approach a charity and offer to volunteer, tend to give more hours on average.

Those of us who began volunteering alongside our parents are more likely to remain active volunteers and regular church attendance is also likely to increase our involvement in volunteering.

This might seem surprising, but internet users are more likely to volunteer than non-users.

The number one answer is to contribute to our community.

Volunteering provides a way to make use of our skills and experience that might or might not be needed at work or home.

If we have personally been affected by a cause, we are more likely to become active with that cause.

We also volunteer to explore our strengths, meet people, and improve our job opportunities.

Add to all of this information the fact that 4 in 5 Canadians volunteer informally to offer direct help to those living around us.

The bottom line is that volunteering is alive and well and deeply ingrained in our Canadian culture.

Enjoy the rains because a return to summer-like weather is forecast for the weekend.

Meteorologist Doug Lundquist, with Environment Canada, says this week’s thunderstorms are a bit unusual in that they have brought in so much heavy rain, with the possibility of hail.

“It’s an upper low from California that’s very moist, and that can lead to thunderstorms,” he explained.

Six millimetres of rain fell in one hour after the skies darkened Wednesday morning, but they cleared later until another storm cloud moved in.

Wednesday afternoon. The warm temperatures that kicked off the start of the month are expected to return this weekend.

This past summer has been on the warm side, with July both hotter than average and also drier, with only six mm of rainfall instead of the usual 37 mm, Lundquist reports.

However, August was closer to normal, with rainfall of 28 mm, just

below the normal of 34 mm; and a mean temperature of 21.5 C compared to the average of 24 C, largely due to warmer nights, he said.

But, August was a more-humid month than normal, and intermittent rain began with the Aug.

12 storm that began with a devastating hailstorm in Southeast Kelowna that wiped out some crops, and continued with rain around the 15th and the 29th of the month.

For the remainder of September, Lundquist said there’s a high prob-

ability of temperatures that are above the average.

In fact, he said that’s true of the entire fall, through November.

Long-term forecasts of precipitation are unreliable, he said.

Kelowna city officials say the $14-million Bernard Avenue revitalization project is not being delayed because of the FortisBC labour dispute, it’s just losing the time it made up by being ahead of schedule.

According to Bill Berry, the head of the city’s construction services department, the original deadline to complete the work was June 2014—the date announced Tuesday as the new expected completion date. Thanks to fast work by the Vernon-based contractor on the second phase (Abbott Street to Pandosy Street section) of the project, time had been made up that would have not required road reconstruction continuing into next spring, said Berry.

The original plan called for a final layer of asphalt being laid on the rebuilt road next spring, he added.

On Tuesday, the city announced that due to the lockout of FortisBC electrical workers by the company, it has had to split the third and final phase of the Bernard Avenue project into two sections, with one part now underway and the other to take place next spring.

Berry said the first part, from St. Paul Street to Ellis Street, can be done now because it does not require electrical lines under the road to be worked on. But that’s not the case with the stretch from Ellis Street to Pandosy Street.

Berry said as late as last Friday, the city talked with Fortis officials and was told they could not do the electrical work because their workers are still locked out and there was no sign of them going back to work anytime soon. “We waited until the very last possible moment,” said Berry.

He said for the last nine weeks during the lock out, the city had been “crossing its fingers” hoping for a resolution to the labour dispute at Fortis. The company locked out the workers in July. Berry said there is nothing the city can do to get the work done without a resolution of the labour dispute.

The Bernard Avenue work does not quality as an essential service that must be maintained by the locked out Fortis workers. And Berry said it is unlikely any legal attempt by the city to get the work done would be successful.

He said even if the labour dispute ends soon and the Fortis workers return to work, the Ellis to Pandosy block cannot be completed this fall anyway because originally the contractor had planned to use two crews, both working at the same time, on the two blocks to complete the work by November. But now, that second crew is no longer available.

Berry said the city remains hopeful that the Fortis labour dispute will not drag on into next spring because that would result in the city having to really delay completion of the road work.

“I feel sorry for the merchants down there,” said Berry, saying the city had hoped to wrap up the Bernard revitalization work by November because of the time saved during the spring work.

Although storms are not that unusual in September, generally there is a drying-out as fall weather moves into the Okanagan, but this is a particularly moist storm, he said.

Beginning Sunday, he expects the weather to dry out, the sun to re-appear and a return to summery weather, but with slightly lower temperatures of mid-20s instead of low30s—because the sun hasn’t as much power at this time of year.

That would be more typical weather for an Okanagan autumn, he says.

Family connection cited in drug busts Jennifer Smith STAFF REPORTER

A 62-year-old West Kelowna man has been charged with possession for the purposes of trafficking and another man likely faces the same fate thanks to an investigation stemming back to this spring.

On Wednesday, Aug. 24, members of the Kelowna RCMP Special Enforcement Team and West Kelowna RCMP pulled over a vehicle with some 8.5 ounces of cocaine and an ounce of heroin inside.

Peter Collins, 62, and an as yet unnamed 34-year-old man from West Kelowna were both arrested.

The officers were following up on the investigation of Neil Elliott Collins, a 36-year-old man from West Kelowna who was arrested last spring with weapons and drugs.

The younger Collins was apprehended following the search of a condo complex on Upper Sundance Drive in the Shannon Lake neighbourhood as a result of a month-long investigation into drug activities in the area.

Taken into custody on Thursday, May 23, his arrest followed a series of arrests via traffic stops the night before in which four other people were arrested.

The search of the condo turned up 7.8 ounces of heroin, 4.5 ounces of crystal meth, 11.6 grams of marijuana, 0.03 grams of crack cocaine, 600 ml of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid, also known as GHB or the date rape drug, and a syringe police suspected was loaded with heroin.

There was also some 25 ml of liquid codeine, a mixed bag of hundreds of prescription pills, a significant amount of cash and a loaded 9 mm Glock 17 handgun. In addition to the drugs in the condo, police found 21.75 grams of crystal meth, two grams of heroin, 14 morphine pills, 33 grams of methadone and 10 dilaudid tablets in the car of the first suspect arrested. The other pair of traffic stops the same night brought in a large cache of stolen property including electrons, air guns, tools, scopes and clothing.

The younger Collins was charged with multiple counts of possession for the purposes of trafficking and possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm with ammunition.

The older Collins was pulled over as the vehicle he was in left the Coquihalla Connector. He has been charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

SuperZip day raises money for fight against Parkinson’s Kevin Parnell STAFF REPORTER

A family-owned business in Oyama has stepped up its charitable efforts and is hosting a fundraising day this weekend.

The Oyama Zipline is hosting a SuperZip day on Sunday, Sept. 8, with 100 per cent of the tour proceeds donated to charity.

SuperZip is an extension of the national SuperWalk event for Parkinson’s disease.

With no organized walk in Oyama, supporters can get involved in two ways.

One method of supporting Parkinsons Canada Society’s SuperWalk is to book a zipline tour

in Oyama for Sept. 8. A second way to participate is to sponsor Team Oyama on www.parkinson.bc.ca by registering as a virtual zipliner.

The Lake Country attraction raised an impressive $4,950 at SuperWalk 2012 and its owners are optimistic about giving more this year.

Police chase was too dangerous to pursue Jennifer Smith

Kelowna RCMP had to give up a chase before later nabbing a suspect late Monday night.

Patrolling police officers spotted a truck speeding along Enterprise Way at 11:15 p.m. Monday, which whipped around the corner on Spall Road and headed for downtown on Clement, tires squealing.

“The truck immediately sped off, turning onto Clifton Road (and) police disengaged (chasing) the suspect vehicle due to the excessive speeds,” said Kelowna RCMP Const. Kris Clark in a press release the next day.

Abandoning the chase, RCMP members patrolled the area until the suspect, a 37-year-old man from Kelowna, was found and arrested on an outstanding Canada-wide warrant.

The truck was recovered on Willow Crescent in North Glenmore; it had been stolen from a home on Glenwood Avenue in the South Pandosy neighbourhood over the weekend.

The investigation is still unfolding.

The Kelowna Peace Group, in concert with the national Canadian Peace Alliance, has called for a demonstration Saturday at noon to voice opposition to U.S. plans to fire missiles into Syria.

The protest will be staged at the intersection of Gordon Drive and Harvey Avenue.

“The immoral, illegal, dangerous, reckless escalation contemplated by Obama must be stopped and we have maybe a week to make our voices heard in opposition. You don’t put out a fire by pouring gasoline on it,” said a Kelowna Peace Group member in a press release.

The information sessions for the CHIP program are free and those who register can schedule their CHIP comprehensive health screening on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m., or Wednesday, Sept. 11. at 7 p.m., at the Kelowna Lifestyle Center, 130 Springfield Rd., 250-7648638.

The CHIP curriculum is designed to reduce risk

factors for chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease by educating participants about the medical benefits of adopting healthy eating, physical activity behaviours, stress management and more.

This program is for adults, aged 18 or older.

The CHIP program can help prevent, arrest, and even reverse common risk factors for lifestyle itself such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure.

Significant health changes can occur in as little as 30 days into the program including improved blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides,

blood sugar, sleep, resilience and depression.

Recently the Research-tested Interventions Program (RTIP) announced that CHIP is now included on its official website.

RTIP is associated with the National Institutes for Health and in the Consumer Reports of health intervention programs.

“After the National Cancer Institute’s independent review of the health benefit results participants are gaining from CHIP, they have given the program a rating of 100 per cent effectiveness in reducing the effects of lifestyle diseases, improving quality of life

and improving economic outcomes,” said Wayne Dysinger, clinical director of the Lifestyle Medicine Institute based in California, and head of the department of Preventive Medicine at Loma Linda University.

Washington resident Teresa Davis testifies that “in just four weeks my cholesterol dropped nearly 100 points, I lost about 20 pounds without feeling hungry or deprived, and I have enjoyed a new lease on life” after following the optimal diet and the CHIP healthy lifestyle advice she received.

Hospital building renovations go to tender

Interior Health has issued requests for proposals (RFP) for architectural, electrical and mechanical consulting services to support renovations of the Strathcona building at Kelowna General Hospital as it prepares for the new Interior Heart and Surgical Centre.

The heart centre is currently under construction at KGH. According to IH officials, the RFP will support the final phase of the heart centre project.

It will see parts of the Strathcona building reconfigured and renovated to provide clinical and support services for the hospital’s cardiac revascularization program.

Three requests for proposals were posted on the B.C. Bid website Wednesday seeking consulting wservices on the architectural, electrical and mechanical components of the

project.

Political theatre scary and absurd

T

he latest chapter in the ongoing attempt to draw the Middle East into the 21st century is yet another example of political futility for the United States.

For the country that invented the phrase ‘Walk quietly and carry a big stick,’ the Americans continue to stumble as the world’s self-appointed policeman.

Already embroiled in two ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, now U.S. President Barack Obama feels cornered into firing

ballistic missiles into the midst of the Syrian civil war.

Why? To make a statement that the world will not tolerate the apparent use of saron gas on its own citizens. And to save face after he carelessly made a statement that the Syrian government using chemical weapons would cross a red line that would ignite a U.S. military response of some kind. Well, the “of some kind” moment has arrived and Obama has backed himself into a corner, while the U.S. Congress politicians face difficulty figuring out

what is best for the U.S. against their own personal political ambitions. While Canada has offered moral support for whatever the U.S. does, Prime Minister Stephen Harper is otherwise keeping a low profile in this political soap opera being played out on cable news networks.

Other countries are doing the same, wanting to avoid the folly of the British prime minister, who was rebuffed by his parliament in wanting to stand with the U.S. at the missile firing line.

While the loss of hundreds

of lives and video images of the impact the attack had on children is hard to stomach, any reaction from the U.S. and other countries after ignoring a civil war that has claimed more than 200,000 lives and left two million Syrian refugees flooding into neighbouring countries defies common sense.

Obama sending missiles into the Syria debacle is a case of too little, too late. The time to act for innocent Syrians was long before the death toll started to mount.

Avoid last minute rush to enrol in Okanagan College classes

I

t never ceases to amaze me how many people show up at the registration office of Okanagan College the first week of classes and say they want to start college this fall.

Classes began on Sept. 4 so this is really last minute as it takes time to process applications and get students registered.

If you are considering going back to school and have yet to apply, the college does have some space in some courses, but you have to be prepared to take what’s left.

This probably means you might not get that English course you want and may find some courses full.

To speed up the process, the best thing Jane you can do is bring in Muskens your high school transcript if you have it.

It would be best if you had an official, sealed version of your transcript, but we can accept a copy as an interim measure.

Reviewing your transcript will allow us to determine if you are eligible to enter the program you want to pursue.

engineering technology programs are full, but there is still some space in our university transfer program.

This program offers a number of arts and science courses geared to complete one of our credentials or to transfer the credit to a university such as UBC Okanagan.

If you need to upgrade, you will have to visit the adult academic and career preparation department so they can help you determine the level of upgrading you require.

Once again a high school transcript would help them determine what courses you need to register in.

If you don’t have a transcript the department can still determine which level you need to register in.

What most students don’t realize is that depending on your high school transcript you can complete university transfer courses and upgrade at the same time.

Many students will take a few arts course such as English and psychology and at the same time complete Mathematics 11 and/or Biology 12 to enter into another program.

If you are someone who has completed credit at another college or university you may be able to apply this coursework to an OC credential.

Although this process takes longer, you can apply today and submit your transcript for credit evaluation.

This means we would look at the courses you completed at another

school and see if they are similar to any of our courses and—if they are— provide you with appropriate transfer credit. You can still take courses in the fall while your transcript is being evaluated.

If the fall doesn’t work for you, the college is currently accepting applications for January 2014. Just visit our website and apply online.

So if you are one of those people who just decided you wanted to come back to school today, it would be best if you visited one of the college’s campuses now.

Council not listening if info centre goes in park To the editor: Why change City Park? I do not understand why our Kelowna city council would want to change our City Park.

It is a natural, beautiful park. Do we want more roads and paved parking lots?

is. Don’t destroy Veendam Gardens and our 100-year-old lawn bowling club facilities. The city has just spent thousands of dollars getting it in good shape with the help of the lawn bowling members. It is an asset to our city.

To the editor: Gunther Ostermann mentions Microsoft chairman Bill Gates in his Aug. 23 letter to the Capital News: So Much To Ponder In Figuring Out The Universe.

Software is a set of instructions for a computer program. Gates said in The Road Ahead (1995): “Human DNA is like a computer program but far, far more advanced than any software ever created.”

Programmers utilize complex codes to create software. The genetic

code, which is more sophisticated, controls the physical processes of life and is accompanied by elaborate transmission and duplication systems.

How does evolution, using natural processes and chance, solve the problem of complex information sequencing without intelligence?

Laurence Tisdall is the founder and president of the bilingual creationist organization: The Creation Science Association of Quebec. He holds a master of science degree in micro-

propagation (McGill University), a bachelor’s degree in general agriculture from Macdonald College (McGill University) and has been published in the peer-reviewed journal HortScience (1988).

Known since 1984 for his talks on biblical creation, Tisdall has participated in 18 debates and presented over 1,000 talks in churches, schools, colleges and universities.

Biology professors from UBCO, UBC, SFU, TRU and UFV were contacted to see if anyone would be willing to debate

Tisdall on the topic: “Be it resolved: Biological systems are too complex to have evolved by natural processes such as Darwinian evolution.”

As no professor has come forward, the title of his Sept. 6 talk at the Okanagan College lecture theatre (1000 KLO Road, 7 p.m.) will be: “How to debate an evolutionist and NEVER lose.”

Topics will include: how to organize a debate, what subjects to debate, and answers to the most popular anti-creationist arguments. An actual de-

bate presentation about the “origin of life” will be shown and explained.

Cannan an MP or ‘oil industry lobbyist’?

To the editor: Few details have been made public about the proposed Canada East pipeline to convert a 40year old, thin-walled gas pipeline into an oil pipeline carrying highly corrosive and toxic bitumen and bitumen diluting chemicals from Alberta to Eastern Canada.

This proposal requires a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the federal government only after it has undergone thorough assessment and public review, which it has not.

MP Ron Cannan’s recent column in the Capital News (Pipeline Energy Projects Offer Economic Opportunities, Aug. 20) praising the economic benefits of this oil pipeline is both premature and highly prejudicial.

Cannan supports the project based entirely on the company’s unverified claims of multi-billion dollar capital costs and community benefits despite the fact that the longterm social, economic, environmental and public health costs needed to mitigate negative impacts

from the project have not been assessed and reviewed by either the company or the federal government.

Cannan’s role as an MP has clearly changed and needs to be questioned. By over-zealously supporting this project before it has undergone due public process, assessment and review, he has put corporate interests above public interests.

This change begs the question: Is Cannan really sitting in Ottawa as an MP representing his riding constituents or as an

unregistered oil industry lobbyist?”

Christy Clark I feel strongly about that not only as premier, but also as your MLA. Earning the trust of Westside-Kelowna voters is a privilege, one I’m very grateful for.

To keep that privilege, I’m always looking to protect your tax dollars, always looking for ways to make sure local issues stay on the map.

That’s why I made sure my first announcement as MLA addressed the single most important local issue, upgrading Westside Road.

I also worked with the District of West Kelowna to help the residents of McDougall Creek find flood protection solutions and to extend RapidBus service into West Kelowna.

One of the best ways to ensure local issues get the attention they need is having local stakeholders explain them in person.

There’s just no substitute for face-to-face meetings.

That’s why I’m proud to bring my cabinet to Kelowna next week.

There are direct economic benefits that come with bringing cabinet to town, such as money spent on hotels, facilities, meals and so on.

But there’s a longer-lasting benefit that comes with face-to-face meetings with local stakeholders.

Cabinet ministers have to balance sometimes differing regional wants and interests, to arrive at policies that benefit the province as a whole.

But in a province as diverse as British Columbia, those differing interests can be very different indeed.

It’s absolutely vital to get out there—to visit as much of the province as possible, talk to as many

people as possible and learn firsthand what matters on the ground.

To do just that, my cabinet and I will meet with mayors, district representatives, the Westbank & District Chamber of Commerce and others.

We won’t be able to say “yes” to every request, but we will walk away with a better understanding of the issues and hopefully a way forward.

That’s why in the coming weeks and months, you’ll see more news on LNG, on securing new markets and customers in Asia—and on more investments in the Central Okanagan.

In the weeks and months to come, I’m looking forward to using this space to tell you about those announcements and initiatives we’re working on.

I’m also looking forward to hearing from you—to make your issues get and stay on the map.

ENTERTAINMENT KYLE POIRIER sells his art on the blog thepeartree.ca, which he shares with his wife. He has sold half of the 60-plus paintings he’s produced on his journey to paint 100 10-by-10inch acrylic paintings to sell for $100 each.

It was a lofty goal, Kyle Poirier admits but he hasn’t given up on producing 100 10-inch by 10inch paintings until the project is complete.

Of course, he hasn’t given up his day job at the Kelowna Art Gallery or his family, two kids and a wife, or the many other demands of daily life either.

And so, the original target to be finished by the end of 2011 fell by the wayside and he’s now working toward being finished by 2013.

“It was really about the process anyway,” said Poirier. And it has been quite the adventure.

Now two-thirds of the way to becoming a small acrylic painting centurion, he’s had work go to a music teacher in Churchill, Manitoba as a retirement honour and discov-

ered an unusual affinity among art fans for fish.

“People like fish,” he says when asked about his “go-to” clearing house image.

This particular project has seen four fish added to the collection, The Go Fish Series, and only one is left. But he’s been using fish as a staple image since art school.

As one might expect, painting 60-plus images has produced its own goto themes as well. Working with his wife’s antique books he’s found he now likes the books as both a subject and a background.

A big part of what got the 100 painting project underway was a desire to find a manageable access point to commercial art in the busy life of a young family man so he could make these kinds of discoveries. It’s producing a very distinct style along the way.

fond of the lofty intellectual projects fine arts departments produce—during his first interview to kick off the project he talked about his designer baby series and exploring the damage Monsanto is doing in paint—today’s work is whimsical with a rather ironic old world flare.

This project would never have existed if it were not for the blog he shares with his wife, LoriAnne, thepeartree.ca, and his desire to make use of what the Internet has to offer.

“I love how technology is empowering the art world, giving the artist the ability to get their work out to the masses,” he told us as he launched the project.

Selling his work online for $100 a painting, he found a niche in accessible and affordable art in a manner that is accessible to him and his cus-

tomers.

He has done one large painting for his mother and one larger one as a donation for KAG, where he works as a graphic designer.

One can follow along with his process online or go down to the Marmalade Cat Café where a selection of the old cars and whimsical children, doves and antique typewriters have just been hung on the walls.

It’s a favourite stop for the family on Sunday mornings for chocolate coffee and wholewheat cinnamon buns and with 31 of the paintings already sold, it’s also one of the only places one might get to see the work.

The rest are in homes and offices from the United Kingdom to the United States, wherever the creative spirit they showcase catches someone’s fancy.

Arson suspected in West Kelowna Lions hall fire Wade Paterson STAFF REPORTER

Sunday’s fire that caused significant damage to Westbank Lions Community Centre was likely started on purpose.

According to Const.

Kris Clark, the fire began to burn from the outside of the community hall.

“The origin of the fire was determined to be at the front exterior of the building—it’s believe to be intentionally set,” said Clark.

Clark said there are currently no suspects; however, a number of people who saw the fire in its early stages around 8:30 a.m. Sunday have come forward.

“Anybody who saw anything within the preceding hours that day who has yet to speak with police is asked to call the West Kelowna RCMP at 250-768-2880.”

According to West Kelowna fire chief Wayne Schnitzler, the 23 firefighters who responded

were able to save much of the rear of the heritage building. Whether it will be renovated or rebuilt is yet to be determined.

The community centre was built in the late 1920s, with an addition added in the early 1980s.

“That’s where our community meets more than anywhere else,” said West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater.

Several user groups have been impacted by the blaze.

The Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs’ Westside Youth Centre, located in the building’s lower level, will be closed for the immediate future.

The centre provides drop-in recreation, meals and snacks, reconnect counselling and employment services.

“Westside Youth Centre staff is committed to connecting with youth, and ensuring their basic needs are being met during this challenging time,” read a statement put out by the youth centre.

Familiar faces will lead WFN for the next three years as the election produced only one change.

Brian Eli claimed the seat made available by departing councillor Lorrie Hogaboam—who chose not to run after serving one term on council—by earning 124 votes.

Eli has served on council for WFN in 10 past terms, the latest being 2007 to 2010.

Lindley—approximately 59 per cent of the vote— to hold onto his position as chief.

Last month, Louie told Capital News he didn’t initially plan to run in the 2013 election; however, changed his mind due to some unfinished business.

“There are two real main projects we have— two main reasons why I believe my involvement will be helpful to WFN,” Louie said in early August.

The first project is WFN’s proposed private hospital, which is expected to begin construction in October. The medical facility will focus on patients who are foreign

medical tourists or Canadians who would otherwise leave the country to receive expedited private health care.

“We’re basically meeting daily, aroundthe-clock…to get the right people involved so this goes without flaws,” said Louie.

The second priority is acquiring the land owed to WFN from the province as part of the Westside Road Interchange Project.

Incumbent councillors Christopher Derrickson, Mike De Guevara and Mic Werstuik were also voted in for three more years, earning 232, 159 and 155 votes respectively.

Councillor candidates Fernanda Alexander and Janine Lott were the closest runners-up with 97 votes each.

proximately a 60 per cent voter turnout, with 335 ballots cast and 332 ballots counted, out of 559 eligible voters.

ews of the latest ICBC rate hike broke on Friday, Aug. 30.

My latest rant about our laws that forbid handheld cell phone use while impliedly endorsing the equally (or perhaps more) dangerous hands-free version “broke” the day before, with the publication of my last column on Aug. 29.

It was a timely coincidence. The two topics are directly linked.

Kelowna Museums will offer an opportunity to share experiences and memories of the Okanagan Mountain Park Fire at an event called Smoking Embers: An Evening of Sharing, taking place tonight (Thursday Sept. 5) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Laurel Packinghouse in Kelowna’s Cultural District.

Guest speakers will be on hand from Emergency Support Services, The Salvation Army, Red Cross and the producers of the documentary film Firestorm, along with wine from St. Hubertus Winery.

During the month of September, Global Pets Foods will sponsor the second annual national Heroic Heart Pet Service Award.

Global Pets Foods stores, including the Kelowna location at 340-2339 Highway 97 North, invites local residents to nominate animal shelter and rescue volunteers who have demonstrated outstanding care and compassion to homeless pets. Four volunteers will be recognized with awards by Global Pets Foods, Hill’s Ideal Balance, and Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Mark Buehrle.

“It takes a special kind of person to see the horrific abuse animals endure on a daily basis,” said Buehrle.

“It’s important these volunteers know they are making a difference to all of the animals they are working with and are doing a very good thing.”

Heroic Heart award winners will receive a $1,000 cheque to support a specific shelter/rescue project or cover the cost of veterinary bills. Winners will also receive 12 large bags of Hill’s Ideal Balance pet food donated to their shelter of choice.

As of Sept. 1, the public can nominate a pet hero, or yourself, by filling out a ballot and sharing a brief story (500 words or less) describing how the nominee has demonstrated outstanding care and compassion to homeless pets.

Entrants are also encouraged to share how the $1,000 donation will make a difference to the nominees’ shelter or rescue. Nominations can be made online through Facebook.com/GlobalPetFoods.

Nominations will close Sept. 30, and a panel of judges will review all nominees’ Heroic Heart stories to decide on the four best entries.

The 2013 Heroic Heart Award winners will be announced in early November with an award presentation to follow at the local Global Pet Foods stores in the communities where the award winners live.

Diarrhea problems for pets not to be taken lightly D ue to the curiosity of dogs and cats, gluttony, along with a sensitive digestive system makes them very prone to suffer from diarrhea.

In my experience, diarrhea is the number one reason for contacting a vet.

All pet owners have been in this situation before. Their pet has diarrhea so do you take your animal to the vet right away or wait a day or two? Let me shed some light over this question.

Diarrhea is characterized by changes in the stool consistency. It can be caused by a disease of the small intestine, large intestine or other organs outside of the intestinal tract, such as the liver.

There are few differences between the diarrhea that is originated from the small and the large intestine. Small intestinal and large intestinal diarrhea have different causes, require different tests to diagnose and are treated differently.

Your vet will ask you instructive questions in order to understand, better locate the pet’s problem, and to plan for specific tests to determine the cause of the diarrhea.

Dr. Moshe Oz A pet with diarrhea originated from the small intestine will topically defecate three to four times a day with a large amount of stool in each time.

With large bowel diarrhea, there is usually increase in the frequency of the defecation with small amount of stool in each time.

If there is blood in the stool, it will appear as black discolouration of the stool in case of small intestine diarrhea and red in large intestine diarrhea.

Among the hundreds of causes for diarrhea, some are viral, bacterial or fungal infections, food allergies, intestinal parasites, tumours, diseases of the pancreas, liver or kidneys.

The most common reason for diarrhea is probably dietary indiscretion, meaning the pet got into garbage or other rotten food. Some pets are have a very sensitive di-

gestive system and just a change in the pet’s diet can elicit diarrhea.

When the pet has diarrhea, it is not absorbing the nutrients from its diet properly, which leads to weight loss and electrolytes imbalance that can lead to severe consequences if left untreated.

Diarrhea may also lead to dehydration and occasionally severe blood loss.

If your pet has normal health and has a normal body condition (not too thin or fat) but suddenly exhibits diarrhea symptoms, you can attempt to treat it first before rushing to the vet.

The tactic to follow is to stop feeding the animal for 24 hours to rest its digestive system. But it’s crucial to encourage your pet to drink and stay hydrated.

Many dogs may also like to fool around with ice cubes, as this is another way to get fluids into them.

Cats really like running water, so allowing them to drink straight from a tap might do the trick.

After 24 hours of this, providing the diarrhea has subsided, you can try to offer the animal a small

amount of easy to digest food such as rice with chicken flesh (without the bones, skin, salt or any other spices) or commercial food carried by veterinarians that it designed for animals with digestive problems.

In the first day you should offer the food in small amounts every three to four hours.

Gradually over the next two to three days if the animal tolerates the food well and the stool is forming back to normal consistency, decrease the frequency of the feeding and increase the amount of food in each feeding.

When the pet is back to normal, don’t switch back to its normal diet abruptly. It’s better to mix over few days to prevent recurrence of the diarrhea.

Having said that, be cautious. Not every case should be treated at home without the professional help of a vet.

Be aware if there is no improvement in the pet’s condition after the fasting and the change of diet.

Or in cases that the diarrhea is also accompanied by other sickness symptoms such as lethargy, fever, vomiting, weight loss or any other concerning condition.

If the stool or vomit contain blood, it would probably be better idea to go and see your veterinarian right away.

Cat owners also take note— overweight cats shouldn’t be fasted.

period of time can potentially cause them severe liver damage.

Diarrhea may be just a simple and transient condition that may be treated at home with a diet change, but often it is a symptom of a much more severe condition that re-

Paws for a Cause seeks support from pet lovers The B.C. SPCA Kelowna welcomes all animal lovers to join a walk to end animal cruelty.

The Scotiabank and B.C. SPCA Paws for a Cause Walk to end animal cruelty takes place Sunday, Sept. 8, in the north field of City Park.

“This is a provincial campaign that brings animal lovers together across the province,” said Suzanne Pugh, branch manager of the Kelowna SPCA. “Many believe you must have a dog to participate but really you just need to be an animal lover and want to be a part of the fight to end animal cruelty to all animals— domestic, farm and wild.”

This year’s walk will include a three-kilometre or one-kilometre walk option with those infamous “gold rocks” along the

route—find one and you win a prize.

There will also be dog-friendly games such as Dogs Got Talent, join in the fun in the Kids Zone complete with a bounce house, enjoy a snack at the barbecue or check out what the animal product vendors have for sale.

“This is the only provincial campaign we do and is also the largest fundraising campaign we do as an organization,” said Heather Harrison, with SPCA branch fundraising support for the Interior.

Okanagan Sun primed for Vancouver Island Raiders

On most occasions the last half dozen years, the Okanagan Sun have found themselves in an underdog role against the Vancouver Island aRaiders. n Based on the first -meeting of the 2013 season between the clubs last smonth, Saturday’s matchtup in Nanaimo takes on a emarkedly different tone. s The Sun, who shut down V.I. 17-3 on Aug. 3 yin Kelowna, are unbeaten yin five games this season, ,while the re-tooling Raidners are 3-2.

Still, while the Sun -may be favoured on paper, -veteran safety Jack Rush rexpects another typical -knock-down, drag-’em-out affair this weekend between the two intense junior football rivals.

“Getting ready for the Raiders, it always feels a little different, it’s intense and you know it’s going to be a battle,” said Rush, 21, the BCFC leader in overall defensive statistics.

“We don’t like to lose to

them and I know the same goes for them. Nanaimo is a tough place to play.

Everybody is hyped and ready to play this game.”

A perennial powerhouse, the Raiders are in a mild rebuilding mode this summer, looking for ways to compensate for the loss several veterans, including all-star and record-setting quarterback Jordan Yantz.

And while V.I. coach Matt Blokker says his club has made significant strides since the first encounter between the clubs, the Sun of 2013 is as diverse and talented a ball club as he’s seen come out of Kelowna in years.

“The Sun is full of confidence right now and that’s one thing that can be pretty tough to break,” said Blokker. “We have to improve our consistency from last time or we won’t be in the ball game. We feel we’re a better team, but they look really good all-round, too.

think they get the credit they deserve,” he added, “and they’re well-coached and well disciplined.”

Unlike many past games on the Island where the Sun would travel and play the same day, the club will leave a day early and stay overnight Friday in Nanaimo.

With that in mind, Rush says bus legs and fatigue won’t be a factor.

“It’s nice when you don’t have to worry about the travelling part of the game,” said Rush, who

has 19 tackles and three interceptions this season.

“Staying over, you get up well-rested and you’re ready to play. I think that’s going to be huge for us in this one.”

If the Sun can leave the Island with a victory, it would be another big step towards locking up top spot in the BCFC and home field advantage throughout the post-season.

Even if Okanagan doesn’t recover its overturned win against Chilliwack, the Sun could still finish 9-1, good enough for a BCFC title. Still, with the Raiders yet to come and two games each against Kamloops and Chilliwack remaining, Rush insists his teammates aren’t looking too far ahead.

“We’re taking it week by week, nothing more than that,” Rush said.

“This is a big game for us, so this is all we’re looking at right now. Having said that, it would be great to be first and home for all the playoffs and that’s the goal. But we’ve still got a

Meanwhile, the Sun (4-1) is still awaiting word on its appeal with the BCFC regarding the club’s forfeited win against Chilliwack

on July 27 due to an ineligible player.

The two sides will meet with an arbitrator on Sept. 10 to discuss the situation.

Danny Watkins signs with Dolphins Former West Kelowna firefighter stays in the NFL Danny Watkins wasn’t out of work for long.

Three days after being cut by the NFL’s Philadephia Eagles, the 6-foot-3, 310-pound West Kelowna native has signed a oneyear contract Tuesday with the Miami Dolphins.

“He has a lot of football left in him,” Joe Panos, Watkins’ agent,

told ESPN.com on Tuesday morning.

“The best thing to happen to him is to get out of Philadelphia. He needs a fresh start and the Dolphins realize that.”

Watkins was preparing for his third NFL season in Philadelphia when the Eagles cut him loose on Saturday.

Drafted 23rd overall in the first round of the 2011 draft, Watkins started 18 games on the offensive line over his first two seasons but was unable to secure a permanent role with the Eagles.

Watkins’ CFL rights are owned by the B.C. Lions who selected him fourth overall in the 2011

draft.

The Mt. Boucherie grad, who never played football until he was 22, attended training camp with the Okanagan Sun in 2006 but an injury prevented him from playing in any games in the B.C. Football Conference.

He later went on to play two seasons at Butte

College in California where he was enrolled in the Fire Academy program.

Watkins then starred two seasons at Baylor University in Waco, Texas where he gained attention as one of the country’s top offensive lineman.

tion (injuries) where you hate throwing young guys in like we had to, but in the time he spent with us, he gained the trust and confidence in our coaches very quickly,” said Huska. “We were at the point we used him for a lot of minutes, in fairly key situations and he handled it well.

“If he shows he deserves to be capable of playing lots of minutes for us this year, then we’ll use him that way again.”

With considerable depth on the Rockets’ roster, Merkley knows ice time won’t be dispensed freely by the coaching staff this season.

The 5-foot-10, 165-pound forward plans to do everything in his power to prove he belongs.

“I’m hoping to get a good opportunity here,” said Merkley, who had 33 points in 30 games with the Calgary midget Buffaloes last season. “This is such a great place to play, I got a taste of it last year and I feel like I did pretty well.

“I’m excited about this season, and I’m going to do whatever they need me to do to play here.”

Because of his speed and ability, Huska said

Osland shoots 2-under at California State Fair tourney Megan Osland’s second day score was the best of the tournament.

Kelowna’s Megan Osland tuned up for the 2013-14 NCAA golf season with a strong performance at the California State Fair Women’s Golf Tournament in Sacramento, Calif.

Osland, a member of the Cal State University-San Jose Spartans women’s golf team, carded a two-day score of 2-under par 142 over the weekend to finish second overall out of 89 players.

Osland, 20, finished third at the same tournament one year ago.

In a field which featured many Div. 1 players from schools such as Stanford, San Francisco, and California State University, Osland was

pleased with her final result.

“I am happy that I was able to start off the season with a good finish at this tournament,” Osland said.

After a one-over par 73 in the opening round, Osland carded the best round of the tournament on day 2 with a 3-under par 69.

Osland, who is headed into her third season of NCAA competition at San Jose, hopes to push her game to yet another level in 2013-14.

“For the upcoming NCAA I have high expectations for myself because I know that I can achieve big things,” she said. “I have been working hard on my game and my swing over the summer in Kelowna with my swing coach Sean Richardson, so I am excited for what is to come this season. After playing in the NCAA national championship at the end of last

The Okanagan Rockets head into the 2013-14 B.C. The eight-team tourney, which begins Friday morning, features five teams from the Canadian Sports School League— Pursuit of Excellence, Okanagan Hockey Academy, Burnaby Winter Club, South Delta Academy, and Compete Academy from Idaho.

Rounding out the field are the host Rockets, Cariboo Cougars and the Koottenay Ice. n The Rockets enter othe weekend with only -a handful of decisions ,left as the roster is taking oshape. … “We have a couple of edecisions to make on deLfence, and one forward spot left to fill,” said Rockets GM David Michaud.

“These games should give us the answers we are looking for.”

As it stands, the Rockets will look to return 7 to 10 players from last year’s club, including two of the top four leading scorers, in captain Branden Wagner and Liam Finlay.

The club has added two top WHL prospects and former first-round draft picks in Tyson Jost (Everett) and Jake Kryski (Prince Albert.)

Two 17-year-old players have joined the team in Linden Hora (POE) and Kobe Oishi who won a provincial tier 1 title with the Kelowna midget Rockets last season.

Fellow Kelowna midget Tanner Campbell is also making the jump to major midget with the Okanagan club.

On defence, Gen Bryshun, who has returned from Powell River, will help form the core of the defence along Tanner Browne (Brandon) and Mark Krabben (Calgary).

I’ve never been more motivated for a season to start, and I know our players feel the same way. “Anything less than a provincial championship would be considered a disappointment with group we have been able to assemble,” he added. “That said, we know the rest of the BCMML isn’t going to roll over and give it to us. We have seven months of very hard work in front of us.”

The Rockets will open the BCMML regular season at home Sept. 21 and 22 against the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds.

Patrick Paul Mangold, age 47, passed away in a tragic accident on August 24, 2013.

Predeceased by his mother Betty Coutts, his father David Mangold, step-mom Anita Mangold, and nephew Chandler Mangold. He is survived by his amazing, beautiful daughters Jennifer and Sydney Mangold and Jodi Mellott, friend and mother of his children, his brother Rick and his family (Gus, Sarah, Christopher, Maia), sister Christine and her family (JD, Amanda, Frank, Tracey, Phoenix, Rayne, Payton), sister Barbara and her family (Gary, Kerri, Gavin), brother Mark (Diana), brother Bryan (Ellen). Patrick had a love for life, family, friends, sports, water and animals, a smile that would light up any room and a hug that made your worries go away. His daughters Jennifer and Sydney were the love of his life and his proudest accomplishments. He was known for his great hockey skills; he played in the WHL and in Europe where he broke records for his skills. He was also an excellent fastball pitcher, playing in many leagues.

Pat loved to teach and shared his skill with many. Jennifer and Sydney both became avid ball players. Patrick loved his work as a project manager and was proud of his many accomplishments. Some of his favourite things included being on the water, in the outdoors, his dog Shrek, Margaret Bay, and most of all being with his family and friends.

Patrick was a good man who was loved deeply. We will miss you, our father, our brother, our friend. A Memorial for Patrick Mangold, will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Kelowna Memorial Arena, 1424 Ellis Street, Kelowna, BC. Friends are invited to come celebrate his life and share stories.

Born July 10, 1929 in Merritt, Alex started his lifelong love of the hardware retail business as a teenager; managing, owning and still buying and selling into his late 70’s at the local flea markets. “The other tool guy!” After serving with the Lord Strathcona Horse (R.C.) during the Korean War (recognized for gallantry and outstanding service) he married Mary Margaret Fraser of Duncan, BC on October 9, 1954.

Settling in Vernon after working in Kamloops, Nanaimo and Squamish to raise their family. He was a hardworking, caring and supportive husband, father and grandfather.

We will miss his witty remarks, wonderful sense of humour and mischievous smile. WALLER, RONALD HENRY It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ronald (Ron) Waller on Saturday, August 31, 2013.

Ron was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on September 22, 1943 to Flora and Harry Waller. During his early years he lived in Nanaimo, Midway and Fruitvale before his parents settled in Robson, BC. He attended school in Trail where he graduated in 1962.

In 1965 he married Wendy Wright and they moved to Vancouver where Ron continued his studies at UBC and received his Pharmacy degree in 1968 and his Masters in Community in 1972. Upon moving to Kelowna in 1969, Ron began working at Gant’s Pharmacy in the Underhill Clinic. In 1973 he bought the store and invited Fred Behrner to join him as a full partner. They changed the name to Lakeside Clinical Pharmacy which it is still called to this day. Over his career Ron was a strong advocate for the profession of Pharmacy and his patients.

In addition to working with government to improve healthcare at the pharmacy level, Ron was very active with the B.C. College of Pharmacists, serving as President in 1990-1991. He was recognized for many of his professional accomplishments and in 1997 was the recipient of the prestigious Bowl of Hygeia award in Philadelphia. Ron retired from pharmacy in 2001 leaving the business in the capable hands of his son Chris and his partner Greg Andreen.

In addition to a full and active professional career, Ron shared much of his time and love of sport within the community. Active in minor hockey he spent many years dedicated to sharing his love of the game with Kelowna’s youth. Coaching at some level as many as 5 teams at once. Countless men were touched by his humor and mentorship. Being a member of the Kinsmen Club and later the K40 further demonstrated Ron’s commitment to the community. In retirement, Ron’s love of sport and connectedness continued with an active lifestyle as his loves of family, golf, fishing, camping, skiing and curling. Throughout his life, Ron had a profound love of family. Ron married his high school sweetheart, Wendy Wright in1965 in Trail, BC. With his life partner, he built a large family of five children that was based on love and taught all who were close to him the importance of the values he held so dear. Ron is survived by his wife Wendy, his children Michael (Lynn), Donald (Karla), Chris (Wendy), Darren (Marnie) and Heather and ten beautiful grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Also surviving him is his brother Lorne. He was predeceased by his mother and father in 2006 and 2007.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club, 1297 Glenmore Road, on Friday, September 6th, 2013 at 1:00 p.m.

Kelowna squadron wants to reach new heights this year For boys and girls aged 12 to 18 with a dream to fly, there is no better opportunity to realize that dream than by taking part in the Royal Canadian Air Cadets program.

Upwards of 3,600 youths are involved with air cadets in 52 squadrons around British Columbia.

When Kelowna’s 243 Ogopogo Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets started meeting at East Kelowna Community Hall, 2704

East Kelowna Rd., this week, squadron commanding officer Capt. Aidan Ketchum expected to see about 60 cadets on parade and up to 20 to 30 new faces in the crowd.

Ketchum said it’s important for new air cadet recruits to realize there is more to the program than marching and polishing boots. “The more cadets we have, the more activities we can plan,” Ketchum said.

“We have survival training exer-

cises, a band program, a citizenship trip, glider flying and first aid training on the roster this year, just to name a few of the activities that can be expected. It is going to be an exciting and rewarding year.”

As the main attraction of the air cadet program, the flight familiarization program ensures new recruits and returning cadets won’t be disappointed. With the addition of a “Dreamflyer” flight simulator to the squadron,

cadets can take their flight training beyond the tarmac now as well.

All uniforms, equipment, travel and expenses are provided at no cost to cadets, who also get the opportunity to attend summer camps across Canada.

“The air cadet program is about preparing young adults to advance in life. We teach life and work skills through leadership, teamwork and community involvement. It is very

fulfilling and I think that youth can benefit immensely, whether they have career aspiration in the aerospace industry and military, or if they are simply looking for a fun activity to be part of during the school year.”

Kris Clark, the fire began to burn from the outside of the community hall.

“The origin of the fire was determined to be at the front exterior of the building—it’s believe to be intentionally set,” said Clark.

Clark said there are currently no suspects; however, a number of people who saw the fire in its early stages around 8:30 a.m.

“Anybody who saw anything within the preceding hours that day who has yet to speak with police is asked to call the West Kelowna RCMP at 250768-2880.”

According to West Kelowna fire chief Wayne Schnitzler, the 23 firefighters who responded were able to save much of the rear of the heritage building. Whether it will be renovated or rebuilt is yet to be determined.

Louie still chief with Eli joining incumbents The newly elected Westbank First Nation council was sworn in Tuesday for a three-year term.

Familiar faces will lead WFN for the next three years as the election produced only one change.

Brian Eli claimed the seat made available by departing councillor Lorrie Hogaboam—who chose not to run after serving one term on council—by earning 124 votes.

cil for WFN in 10 past terms, the latest being 2007 to 2010.

Chief Robert Louie earned 60 more votes than candidate Roxanne Lindley—approximately 59 per cent of the vote—to hold onto his position as chief.

Last month, Louie told Capital News he didn’t initially plan to run in the 2013 election; however, changed his mind due to some unfinished business.

“There are two real

main projects we have— two main reasons why I believe my involvement will be helpful to WFN,” Louie said in early August.

The first project is WFN’s proposed private hospital, which is expected to begin construction in October. The medical facility will focus on patients who are foreign medical tourists or Canadians who would otherwise leave the country to receive expedited private health care.

“We’re basically meeting daily, around-theclock…to get the right people involved so this goes without flaws,” said Louie.

The second priority is acquiring the land owed to WFN from the province as part of the Westside Road Interchange Project.

Nine West Kelowna wineries are continuing their group marketing strategy, but now on a more formal level.

The Westside Wine Trail—which includes Kalala Organic Estate Winery, Mission Hill Family Estate, Quails’ Gate Estate Winery, Volcanic Hills Estate Winery, Mt. Boucherie Estate Winery, Beaumont Family Estate Winery, Little Straw Vineyards, Rollingdale Winery and Meadow Vista Honey Wines—has officially become an association.

“We just decided that we wanted to go with a more formalized union so that we can do more things…we’re all very much on the same page and working together,” said Slamka. “(The wineries) range in size from very large to very small, so there’s a huge benefit in having that kind of collective marketing ability.”

Westbank museum to ▼ CRIMINAL CHARGES PENDING obtain RCMP artifacts Impaired driver causes damage in Peachland A group of retired RCMP officers will visit the Westbank Museum Sept. 11 to present and donate a number of artifacts, dating back to the North West Mounted Police.

The donation will allow the museum to obtain its own collection of RCMP artifacts. Currently the museum displays a private RCMP collection, on loan from Robbie Robertson, as well as a small

display located in the museum office, donated by Don MacIver.

The West Kelowna RCMP Honour Guard will be present for the event, which runs from 3 to 4 p.m. It also marks the 55th year reunion of the #46 troop.

The museum plans to use the items—including old uniforms and a fulllength saber—in a unique display.

A Peachland resident faces impaired driving charges after crashing into multiple vehicles and light posts on Beach Avenue Tuesday night.

At approximately 8 p.m., West Kelowna RCMP received several reports from witnesses that a vehicle had collided with multiple parked cars in downtown Peachland.

RCMP attended and the 54-year-old suspect driver was detained for an impaired driver investigation. The driver later provided breath samples which registered over three times the legal limit.

The Peachland resident will appear in court in December to face several criminal charges, including impaired driving.

The Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs staff are working with district staff to find a temporary space where services can continue to be provided to Westside youth.
