Bingo Hauser and his wife Jackie have been bringing West Coast Amusements rides to the Alberni District Fall Fair for 50 years.

September has arrived and so has the Alberni District Fall Fair, which gets underway this weekend.

The lot atop Vimy Street, which was vacant as recently as Tuesday, will be pulsing with stomach-churning rides, neon, music and crawling with oil-stained carnival workers—carnies—

and customers by Thursday night.

The hallowed event is making its 68th appearance at the fall fair grounds, and its theme this year is ‘Lumberjacks and Haystacks’.

Sixty-eight years is a good run, but just as significant is that Bingo Hauser has brought the clanging rides of West Coast Amusements to Port Alberni for 50 of those years.

The group arrived from the Saanich fair on Tuesday and began setting up.

“I still remember when it was like a mud bowl

here, then the community pitched in and improved the grounds,” said Hauser, whose voice sounds like actor Mickey Rooney.

“This community is still like that and that’s why it’s one of my favourite stops.”

Hauser, 77, has a crop of white hair.

He squints behind sunglasses, his eyesight dimmed from diabetes and surgeries, he said.

Hauser has been the defacto monarch of West Coast Amusements, based in Langley, for the last 69 years.

Logger sports still a draw 2013 FALL FAIR: | Boyko family continues tradition 30 years after logger sports switched venues to the Fall Fair on Sundays.

Skill, strong events and living history keep logger sports spectators coming back to the Alberni District Fall Fair on Sundays, event patriarch Al Boyko said.

The logger sports competition is being held at the fall fair logger sports venue on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Eliminations start at 10:30 a.m. and finals, including Canadian championships, start at noon.

This year marks the 30th year that the venerable event is being hosted at the fairgrounds.

The fall fair needed to attract more people on Sundays and logger sports participants were contemplating leaving their venue on Shoemaker Bay Road.

“It’s been like a great marriage ever since,”

Boyko said.

The married father of three has logged ever since he left school at age 16 to work as a chokerman at the former APL Camp No. 1. “School didn’t really interest me and there were a lot of employment opportunities around for a young man then so I went to work,” Boyko said.

Boyko was introduced to logger sports in 1954 when he worked in Franklin River. His bunkmate was then world-renowned tree climber Danny Sailor, who set up a logger sports training site at the camp.

“Back then, afterwork activities for the guys in camp was limited to reading books or out of date newspapers or listening to the radio,” Boyko said.

“Danny’s setup gave us something more to do with our time.”

‘Young people don’t necessarily have an interest in it because they don’t have a family history.’

Once there, the men learned the finer points of axe throwing, cross-cut sawing and pole climbing, Boyko said.

He competed in several competitions starting with an event at Sproat Lake hosted by the Elks Lodge in the 1960s. “I saw it while I was growing up but it meant more as an adult to compete

in it,” he said.

“I knew I could do as good as the guys I saw back then.”

Boyko and others formed the Logger Sports Committee, which secured use of

the Timber Bowl site on Shoemaker Bay Road from MacMillan Bloedel for logger sports events.

The site was a mecca that drew competitors from around the

world. But in 1984 the committee struck an agreement with the Alberni District Fall Fair to hold their event as a Sunday venue, where it has stayed since.

Boyko’s memory is a vast archive of information about logger sports. He’s also studied logger sports history world wide, even citing early Spanish Basque log chopping events he’s read about.

And he’s the man when it comes to local lumber and logger sports history.

“Back then the union was really strong and you could see that kind of support in the competitions,” Boyko said. “Today though, the industry is fragmented into smaller companies instead of one or two big ones and the union isn’t as strong as a result.”

Nearly a dozen jobs are on the liine at The Coulson Group of Companies aviation division after news that the provincial government has cancelled a direct award contract for the Martin Mars waterbomber.

Coulson’s flying tankers unit employs up to 20 people during the height of fire season.

Wayne Coulson bought both Martin Mars waterbombers— the Hawaii Mars and the Philippine Mars— from TimberWest in 2007. He has had a direct award contract since 2007 and has worked on more than 20 fires across B.C. since then.

The Martin Mars has also fought fires in California and Mexico.

Coulson said he will be talking to other clients to see whether there is a need for the waterbomber, but was disappointed that the B.C. government

The new contract, he estimates, will cost about $20,000 per day to operate the aircraft the government has in mind, for a total of $1.8 million.

Alberni-Pacific Rim NDP MLA Scott Fraser said he knocked on a lot of doors lobbying

for the Mars to continue fulfilling this firefighting contract, but to no avail.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Fraser said as he watched crews winch the Hawaii Mars out of Sproat Lake and onto land for maintenance, Tuesday afternoon.

“It’s not in the interests of the Alberni Valley and I don’t think it’s in the public’s interest,” Fraser said.

“To hear we’re going to be spending a whole bunch more money to get a whole lot less firefighting capacity... it’s that business management that is bankrupting BC Hydro and bankrupting BC Ferries.

“It’s a betrayal to the people of B.C.” Fraser said other countries praise the work of the Martin Mars, yet B.C. doesn’t recognize the contribution these aircraft have made to firefighting in its own province.

The final demolition of the derelict Tidebrook Hotel has begun.

Work crews were hard at work with machinery and dump trucks at the property on Gertrude Street on Tuesday morning.

The demolition actually started last week with workers removing asbestos and lead, city planner Scott Smith said.

The teardown is expected to take until the end of the week, Smith said.

City councillor Cindy Solda has advocated for the demolition for safety

Three Port Alberni residents are facing series of drug charges after two separate takedowns by RCMP. According to an RCMP press release, on Aug. 28 the RCMP drug unit served drug warrants at residences on Maitland Street.

Cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and other drug paraphernalia were seized from the residence, the release noted.

Police have charged

Henry “Hank” Dejong with possession of a controlled substance (cocaine) and breach of recognizance.

He remains in custody and appears in court on Sept. 5.

Dejong was already facing a previous cocaine trafficking charge when the incident happened.

Police have also charged Neill Crossman with possession of a controlled substance.

He appears in court on Sept. 5.

Concerned about an elementary school in the area, local residents and shelter facility officials alerted police about suspected drug activity, the release noted.

In the second incident, acting on tips police executed a warrant at a residence on the 4700 block of Glenside Road after a lengthy investigation.

phone and other drug paraphernalia offence related property.

A possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking charge has been recommended against a 54-year-old woman.

Usage on rise MP’s bill to protect Sproat Lake at NIC campus SUSAn QUInn

COURTENAY — North Island College’s utilization rate reached nearly 90 per cent of its target in the past year — the highest rate in over a decade.

According to director of college and community relations Susan Auchterlonie, the college reached 89.3 per cent of its utilization rate target during its 2012-13 fiscal year. She’s pleased with the rate, especially considering the way the college is set up.

“Given the way we operate, the regional delivery that we have to do, multi-campus, smaller class sizes, 100 per cent’s just not reasonable — we likely won’t ever

achieve that,” says Auchterlonie, noting NIC’s utilization rate for 2012-13 was one of the highest of all B.C. colleges.

She adds the college exceeded its targets in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Practical Nursing programs.

According to the final FTE (full-time equivalent) report, the college had a total of 2,541 FTEs in 201213. NIC also had 104 full-time international student enrolled.

The college continues to expand on agreements with other post-secondary institutions, such as the dual admission and guaranteed admission agreements with the University of Victoria. For more information, visit www.nic.bc.ca.

The Coulson Group may still be offered a “call when needed” availability agreement for future years, he added.

Coulson said he’s not sure whether he will do that yet; he is looking at his options, which would include selling the Hawaii Mars if someone made

an attractive offer or had a use for it.

“We sent out e-mails on the weekend, to some of the Red Bull folks and Virgin Air folks to see if there’s any interest. We may advertise it for a time to see if we get some interest.

“Whether we operate it for them or look at selling it, or if everything fails it will be time to retire it,” he said.

Jim passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his loving family at West Coast General Hospital in the morning of September 4.

He is predeceased by his loving wife Evelyn, brother Zealandia, son-in-laws Glen Stewart and Dave Evans, sisters Lorraine, Inez and Audrey. He is survived by his children, Jim (Jeannine), Ken (Phyllis), Anne Evans and Lynn Stewart (Tom Miller). He is also survived by his 8 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Jim loved to sing and dance and bring joy to others lives.One of Jim's famous quotes was; "If you talk to a person first they will talk to you". Jim's mission in life was to bring a smile to everyone's countenance and it worked.

the announcement on Tuesday. More will come, Garrison said.

Sproat Lake falls in Conservative MP James Lunney’s riding.

Randall said it is unusual for MPs to go into another MP’s riding and make an announcement.

“I simply selected some lakes to get the dialogue going,” he said.

Sproat Lake was one of thousands of streams, rivers and lakes that were de-listed from environmental protection when the

federal government passed the omnibus budget bill earlier this year.

Garrison said Great Central and Kennedy lakes will also be added to the list, and after Rick and Libby Avis brought up the importance of the Stamp/ Somass river system. he promised to add that as well.

Don’t hit the snooze button Back to school labour disputes The initial newsroom reaction to news local high school students were going to get to sleep in this year was about what you’d expect from a group of cynical scribes.

“Lazy, coddled, #$%! teenagers! That’s all they need — another notch on their belts of entitlement.”

But once we got that out of our systems and actually took a look at the facts, the reaction morphed into a grudging “good call.”

There are a lot of things that are done a certain way, just because they have always been done that way.

And just because we had to walk eight miles through blinding snowstorms uphill both ways to get to school (did we mention the wolves nipping at our heels?) does not mean our kids need to.

We’re all for the life lessons of hard work and persistence being taught at the School of Hard Knocks. But what we like even more is good old basic learning.

And the learned have determined that the teenage brain is not wired to do much learning first thing in the morning. So why not let them get started a little later, when there is a better chance they will retain what they are taught?

It’s not like the principle of efficiency isn’t what’s followed in the real world.

Janitors work afternoon shift because that’s when the buildings are empty. Fallers are up before dawn to take advantage of daylight. Programmers sleep in because they are often working well into the night.

Heck, even crusty old reporters tend to often set their own hours, simply because the news never stops.

Do what works is the mantra in a healthy workplace.

It should be the same in our schools.

ICTORIA – Another school year dawns in B.C., with the prospect of disruptive labour disputes.

First up are 27,000 support staff, in a legal strike position. These are the teacher aides, custodians, bus drivers and crossing guards.

Most are members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, with a few Teamsters and other locals scattered around the 60 school districts.

Public discussion about these disputes usually focuses on wage increases, which CUPE members in schools haven’t seen for four years. Their current deals expired more than a year ago, after they were subject to the same twoyear wage freeze imposed on the rest of government.

a half for the first two hours, and double time after that. Contracts also include the provision that unscheduled overtime is subject to a four-hour minimum. It’s amazing how often an unexpected hour of work can arise when it’s paid at quadruple time.

The Surrey school district contract details how even “spare board” employees are to be enrolled in the municipal pension plan, a definedbenefit system most private-sector employees can only dream about.

Then there are paid sick days. The Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation reports that the average B.C. private sector worker took 7.4 sick days last year. The public sector average was 12.

The Surrey contract details the windfall of unused sick days that must be paid out to employees who retire as early as age 55. The maximum is 150 days, for a lavish perk only available to employees hired before July 1, 1996.

Even so, we’ll be paying these bonuses out for years to come.

It goes on and on. Six weeks’ paid vacation after 20 years, with an extra day added for every year after that.

There are many little things, such as a $60 “swimsuit allowance” for teacher aides who take part in swimming instruction.

This is not to devalue the work done by these people.

It is to suggest that given the growing gap between public and private employment benefits, finding savings is reasonable.

Mailbag: Feedback on news items ‘Beach boys’ catch a wave To the Editor,

So far the projected cost of the Canal Beach project is approaching three quarters of a million dollars.

And under the direction of the “beach boys”—Mayor John Douglas and parks and recreation director Scott Kenny—that total may well exceed one million dollars or more.

All that for a development at land’s end which isn’t going to attract many swimmers, but will be used by some wind surfers and kayakers.

You know that when the old dock is resurfaced and when various buildings are constructed for storage, food vendors, etc., costs are going to escalate rapidly at a site that’s too remote for most people to access.

Meanwhile, the Esso property adjacent to Harbour Quay will soon be available for purchase at an unknown cost.

Part of that property is a small beach which is ideal for toddlers and dogs to splash about and, possibly, for adults to swim as

well.

Acquisition of that property should be the first priority of local city council, and not spending very large sums at Canal Beach.

In my opinion, spending should be limited to $100,000 at Canal Beach, and council should acquire the Esso property next year.

It’s ideally situated for public use by residents and tourists alike.

Trade treaty ‘speculation’ To the Editor,

Since they were not adequately consulted and accommodated, it’s no wonder Hupacasath First Nations petitioned Canada’s court prior to government ratifying the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) with China.

Incredibly, it seems colonial attitudes still reign.

First Nations know, as history teaches, that “most treaties have been characterized by insufficient compensation for land conveyed” (A

Layperson’s Guide To Treaty Rights in Canada, Daniel J. Kuhlen, University of Saskatchewan Native Law Centre, 1985).

Example: the Toquaht First Nations experience with the Toquaht Bay marina campground and boat launch which, even though acquired through treaty negotiations .... turned out to be a raw deal with contaminated soil.

With all due respect, Chief Justice Paul Crampton’s Aug.26th ruling against the Hupacasath Nations’ legal challenge— stating how “the potential adverse impacts (of FIPA) are speculative in nature” (Alberni Valley News, Aug.29)—makes no sense.

As a “business risk in hope of gain”, FIPA is the very definition of “speculation” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, which means any potential positive impacts are just as “speculative in nature” as any negative ones.

Business and development is speculative, which is why all parties affected must be consulted and accommodated.

TPP like NAFTA ‘on steroids’ To the Editor,

Do you remember the election debate over the Free Trade Agreement with the US (FTA) in 1988 or the public debate over the North American Free Trade agreement (NAFTA) in 1992-93?

Do you remember when the U.S. published the details of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) in 2001?

Why is it that governments no longer think it makes sense to make the economic and social benefits of deals like the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) understandable to the public?

The TPP is like NAFTA on steroids and involves 12 Pacific Rim countries.

The negotiations have been kept secret but leaks of draft copies have revealed the true intent.

Although the TPP is called a trade agreement it is more of a corporate rights agreement.

Only two of the 26 chapters under negotiation have to do with trade.

The other 24 include how a government regulates corporate activity, what Crown corporations can and cannot do, how long pharmaceutical patents or copyright terms should be, how the Internet is governed, the sharing of personal information across borders, banking and taxation rules and when a company or investor should be compensated when environmental or public health policies interfere with profits.

The TPP threatens community-led public policy by including investor rights’ chapter and investor-state dispute process that would let companies sue governments in secret tribunals when public policies interfere with profits.

The public policy could be legal, fair and indiscriminate and still face corporate lawsuits demanding hundreds of millions and sometimes billions of dollars in compensation.

The Council of Canadians is calling on the federal government to make all TPP chapters public.

Agencies team up for suicide talk

Brewery puts up $20K for salmon The Pacific Western Brewing (PWB) Community Foundation has established a $20,000 fund to support grassroots salmon enhancement initiatives in British Columbia.

Brewery owner Kazuko Komatsu said: “When our representatives visit communities on the Coast and along the Fraser and Skeena rivers they hear a common theme of concern about the pressing need to replenish our precious wild salmon stocks.

“Hundreds of tireless volunteers are working hard in BC communities to rebuild salmon stocks and rehabilitate

streams. PWB wants to help.

“Pacific Western Brewing is a proud home-grown brewery, a proud job creator and an equally proud community builder.”

The announcement of the fund came at a special event in Port Alberni in conjunction with that community’s annual salmon derby.

In the weeks and months ahead the PWB team will be visiting other communities to engage with local salmon enhancement stakeholders.

The PWB Community Foundation will be seeking and adjudicating requests for support later this fall.

West Coast Aquatic director, co-chair of the Nahmint Enhancement Team and Alberni Valley Enhancement Association member Bob Cole said: “I applaud Pacific Western Brewing’s initiative.

“On behalf of all the volunteers who work hard saving and enhancing our West Coast salmon resource – stream keepers, hatchery volunteers, committee members and advocates – when a responsible corporation like Pacific Western Brewing helps with the most pressing challenge of funding, it makes our efforts worthwhile.”

Several Port Alberni agencies have teamed up to create the first annual Suicide Prevention and Awareness community event.

Elia Nicholson-Nave from Kuu-us Crisis Line Society, Gloria Fred and Judy Rumney from the Tseshaht First Nation and Susan Massop from the Alberni-Clayoquot Metis Association are some of the people who have organized the event taking place Wednesday, Sept.

11 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Clutesi Haven Marina.

Representatives from the Hupacasath First Nation have also been involved in preparing this informational event.

“This event is about celebrating life,” says Nicholson-Nave.

Organizers feel it’s time to bring the subject of suicide out in the open and to bring awareness to the public about it.

processed foods are not a healthy option for lunch.

t’s that time of year again for parents to find their creativity to make lunches for kids returning to school.

Being organized and getting prepared before the school day helps to make brown bag lunches more nutritious, economical and exciting.

If you get the kids involved in buying and preparing foods, it usually helps for lunch bags to come home empty at the end of the school day.

Even though many food companies

have developed and marketed smallsize, kid-friendly “lunchables” type foods for school, these processed/ packaged food products tend to be very high in salt, fat and sugar and low in important nutrients, such as many vitamins/minerals and fibre.

To keep the balance of good nutrition in mind, aim for half of the contents of a lunch bag to be vegetables and fruits.

Offering kids the chance to pick out some of their favourites in the produce aisle with the idea that these items will be part of their school lunch should

help ensure children actually eat their lunch.

Some examples are cherry tomatoes, baby carrots, snap peas, celery or turnip sticks, broccoli or cauliflower florets, radishes, half of a banana, grape cluster, small pear, apple slices, mandarin orange, blueberries, cherries, mango spears, pineapple rings, cantaloupe cubes and grapefruit chunks.

Getting kids involved with choosing specific vegetables and fruits helps keep them interested in lunch items.

Also, it helps them to feel they have some control over what foods to eat.

Each of the above health approaches will demand change in your tissues and as a result, your body may complain as it has to rewalk the path of some of its old injuries that were never truly fixed. But as you get deeper into your spinal care, by that three to six month period, you should feel more movement, more health, more life and more energy.

To keep things interesting, surprise your child with a silly note, cartoon or photo to offer a midday reminder from the comfort of home.

For some children, a six-hour day spent with 30 other kids can be emotionally exhausting and having a brief mental break and reminder of home can offer some balance to their long day.

A special treat once in a while, such as a brownie, cookie or cupcake can help brighten a child’s day, but isn’t necessary for a regular addition.

Often, sweet treats

are given out at school for birthdays and other holidays and don’t have to be offered in their daily lunch too.

For older kids, provide them with the tools to pack their own lunches. Stock the fridge/cupboards with healthy foods.

Have small containers, ice packs and thermoses available and ready for their lunch bags.

The night before school is a good time for the kids to organize their lunch supplies, make sandwiches/wraps, cut vegetables, fruits and get other items ready for a smooth flowing morning.

Children typically can go through “food jag” periods and request the same item day after day.

This behaviour is normal and doesn’t mean that your child is “picky”. Generally, as other items are continually offered by parents/caregivers, most kids will grow out of this phase and they will soon be more open to variety again.

Often times, labelling someone as picky can stick with the child, which will make variety for food options even more challenging for parents in the future.

ways to serve old favourites, such as pitas or wraps instead of bread. Offer the fixings to build their own sandwich at lunch with the filling separate from the bread portion.

Have an inside-out sandwich by adding some mustard or lowfat mayo to a piece of lean deli meat, then wrapping it around a bread stick.

Send a container of salad fixings and low-fat dressing, along with a pita and hummus, or other healthy spread, with yogurt and small apple or dried fruit.

Other healthy options for school lunches: • Avocado cut in half with cottage cheese in place of the pit • Sandwiches such as egg salad, tuna, salmon, turkey salad, mashed beans with veggies or bacon/ lettuce in wraps or whole grain bread • Baked beans, buttered noodles with cheese, and spinach or ham/pineapple pizza • Picnic items such as potato salad, coleslaw and macaroni salad • Chunky soups, stews and clam chowder.

• Leftovers from dinner revived with some fresh additions.

Plus, remember to include calcium boosters, such as milk, yogurt, Minigos, yogurt drinks, puddings, almond milk, soy milk or cheese strings.

With some organization and communication with children about healthy preferences, preparing school lunch meals can be another chance in the home to offer fun, teachable moments about healthy eating with kids.

Carnival’s just a way of life for Hauser family From / A3 He immigrated from Poland to Manitoba with his parents and older sister in 1927.

A second sister was born after the family arrived.

His real first name is Ervin but that changed in school.

“Everyone had nicknames then – slim, fatso, shorty.

Someone called me ‘Bingo’ and it just

stuck.”

Today, Hauser and wife Jackie have been married for more than 60 years. The couple has one son and daughter. The Hausers’ grandson and great-grandson both work with carnival operations.

In 1944, Hauser tried to pick up work with a carnival in Brandon, Manitoba. He was too young though and was told to come back the following year.

“I started working with Conklin Shows under a man named Charlie Lucas from New York,” Hauser said. “My first job was peeling potatoes and onions.”

In 1948 he bought a lion that he named Simba, as well as a few rides and began to assemble the pieces of West Coast Amusements. Today, the operation runs more than 100 rides and 200 trucks, which it also leases out.

They no longer have live animals.

“We’ve created a real monster,” Hauser said.

He first rolled into Port Alberni with a couple of nickel digger machines and a few kiddie rides in 1964, “The year the tidal wave hit,” he said.

The grounds were so muddy from rainstorms that a truck and tilt-a-whirl ride got stuck and had to be retrieved with a bulldozer a few weeks later. “Every place we’ve gone to has a story. You might not like it when it happens but you can look back on it and laugh about it later,” Hauser said.

The mill smell — which no carny worker was used to in 1964 — is long gone. But Hauser still recognizes some people who have been coming to the fall fair since he first arrived,

West Coast Amusements travels throughout BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, the Maritimes as well as the US. Entertainment

options are more numerous and technical today, but carnivals remain a strong draw, Hauser said. “The fairs are down this year but there will always be a carnival just like

there will always be things like rodeos.”

For all of the fun it provides, West Coast Amusements is still a business, and doing business on the Island is getting harder. “Fuel prices are increasing, same with ferry fare — I remember when it was just a couple of bucks,” Hauser said. “In Europe carnivals stay put for awhile. The rides use electricity too and this reduces costs.”

Hauser has a promise to fulfill on this trip to Alberni.

One employee who worked with West Coast Amusements for more than 60 years died of natural causes during last year’s fall fair in Port Alberni.

“Young people today don’t necessarily have an interest in it because they don’t have a family history of it,” he said. “And physically, it is a very

demanding sport. You need to be skilled and safe and that takes time.”

Boyko has seen several changes in logger sports over the years. There are fewer events and some – like cable eye splicing — have been eliminated.

Boyko and wife Jean have been married for 56 years. Jean also competes in the axe throw and sawyer events, winning multiple ladies’ world and Canadian championships.

She is also the main organizer for local logger sports events.

Boyko’s son Mike

is a stellar logging sports competitor, as is his daughter Janice—a skilled axe thrower. “I packed it in when Mike started to beat me. That was it,” Boyko said.

Today, Boyko MC’s for logger sports events all over Canada and the United States. And he tools around with a vast collection of axes and sawblades, often imparting advice about them, and working on them for international competitors.

Logger sports isn’t the only thing that has endured in Boyko’s lifetime. He’s lived to see another generation of his family continue with the sport. Both of his grandsons are learning the ropes: one is a log birler and the other an axe thrower.

“I started by cutting kindling for my mother when I was a kid. I had to fill the box at night. That’s the age you have to get them,” he said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

‘Sterling’ coho wins Salmon Fest derby WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON

he winner of the 42nd Annual Salmon Festival and Derby had no idea his fish would be the winner when he caught it.

Angler Sterling Robinson won the $10,000 first prize for the 17-pound coho he caught on Saturday near Assits Island in Barkley Sound.

Jim Freeman collected the prize in place of Robinson, whose job as a paper maker took him to Gibsons on Monday.

It’s the first time in the event’s history that a winner wasn’t present to collect, event organizer Dan Washington said.

But in a telephone interview with the News, Robinson said he felt ecstatic about winning. “I feel pretty happy – no, I feel very happy that I’m the winner,” said Robinson.

“I wasn’t expecting this. I thought maybe fish of the day on Saturday.”

Robinson grew up in Sooke, B.C. but participated in Port Alberni’s salmon derby with his father while growing up.

This derby is the 23rd one he’s entered since becoming an adult, he said.

Robinson said the fish starting hitting right away as soon as he put his line in the water on Saturday morning. He was using a ‘Spring King’ fishing lure with no bait when he reeled in

down this year as evidenced by more lulls than usual at event venues.

Washington wondered aloud whether there will be an event next year or not.

“Our fixed costs like insurance, flagging and security remain the same each year.

We have to crunch the numbers yet but it’s going to be a close call.”

Re-vamping the kids’ corner and adjusting the stage so it faced toward venues instead of at water worked well, Washington said.

“The bands did a great job too. I think there were more people watching them than in the beer garden.”

There was a hiccup during the beginning of the fireworks on Friday. “I have to check into that. The finale sure made up for it though,” he said.

More than 1,000 fishermen participated in the derby and caught approximately 1,348 fish, Washington said.

Support for an antiviolence walk in Port Alberni received a luke-warm response from the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District board earlier this month.

Walk the Talk organizer Andy Callicum spoke to the ACRD board Aug. 14 about the 118 km walk he is organizing for Sept. 20–22.

The walk would take place around Port Alberni with funds raised going towards local Canadian Red Cross violence and abuse prevention programs.

Callicum’s goal is to raise $6,000; he has raised about $1,200 so far.

He explained that he organized this walk because of his involvement with the Red Cross and because he views this is an important cause.

“I don’t see these kinds of programs here,” Callicum said.

However, chief administrative officer Russell Dyson said there is no regional district money available to help fund this event.

“Funding for that would traditionally come out of grants-inaid,” Dyson told the

board.

Just before Callicum spoke, the board agreed to give $2,500 to Jericho Road Church for their celebrity basketball event in October, leaving $1,000 in the ACRD’s special events fund. However, Dyson said Callicum’s walk does not meet the criteria to be labeled as a special event for ACRD funding purposes.

Callicum then invited the directors to walk a lap with him, which is 13 km.

However, the weekend of the walk coincides with the end of the Union of British Columbia Municipalities meeting in Vancouver, which most local politicians plan attend.

The Reconciliation Canada Walk, a walk based on renewing relationships with Aboriginal people is also scheduled for that weekend, with talk of one being held in Port Alberni.

“We as a board are committed to the Reconciliation Walk,” said Long Beach director Tony Bennett, who suggested that the ACRD give in-kind services, like photocopy service and office supplies to Callicum. eporter@albernivalleynews.com

Province funds NTC buy-local initiative Nuu-chah-nulth nations are getting in on a provincial buylocal initiative.

The Ministry of Agriculture announced that the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council is receiving $25,000 in buy-local program funding.

The money will be used to underwrite the tribal council’s T’aaq-wiihak initiative, which sees fish caught on the West Coast and marketed to restaurants, processors and consumers.

T’aaq-wiihak is a Nuu-chah-nulth word meaning “fishing with permission of the

chiefs”.

No information was available about which five tribes are participating.

The money is part of $118,000 that has been distributed to five different Island organizations including the BC Salmon Marketing Council, the Victoria Downtown Public Market Society, the Sooke Region Food Community Health Initiative and the BC Salmon Farmers Association.

The buy local progam offers successful applicants matching funds up to $100,000 to launch or expand local food marketing campaigns.

KEENE; Frank Bennett passed away unexpectedly in the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 66 years of age.

Predeceased by his parents Thomas and Florence Keene and his nephew Sean Keene. Frank is survived by his daughter Tara Audet (Colyn), grandchildren Emma and Andrew, brother Larry (Lynda), nieces and nephews: Shannon Keene, Megan Keene, Tyler Keene, Raili Keene, Brad Gulstene and Courtney Gulstene as well as Wanda the mother of his children and many other friends.

Frank worked for the Plywood Mill and APD prior to getting the job he really enjoyed, working for the City. Upon his retirement, he dedicated his time and attention to his grandkids. Frank enjoyed sports, basketball in his early days and fast pitch softball in later years.

A celebration of Frank’s life will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2013 at 2:00pm at the Italian Canadian Hall, 4065 6th Avenue. Cremation has already taken place. Few reasons are more compelling to grab a spot on the 2013 Tour de Rock team than to help give your own son and other children a fighting chance to beat cancer.

Const. Misty Dmytar, 39, is relatively new to the Nanaimo RCMP detachment, but she and her two-year-old son, Griffyn, are well known in the Comox Valley where she served until recently, and to Tour de Rock teams from the last couple of years.

She is one of two riders from the Nanaimo area, joining Const.

Ed de Jong, who is based at the detachment on Gabriola Island.

When Griffyn was just four days old he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of infant cancer that presents about 50-70 cases a year in Canada.

Dmytar and her partner had to get Griffyn into treatment immediately.

“Griffyn was the youngest they’d ever seen that had come in with neuroblastoma,” Dmytar said.

Surgeons took a tumour the size of a baseball, weighing 230 grams, off of his right adrenal gland. They took the gland too.

Initial treatment produced positive results, but an ultrasound taken a few months later revealed a tumour on Griffyn’s other adrenal gland and spots on his liver.

In the meantime, Dmytar is training for the tour, which starts Sept. 21. Combined with fundraising, it’s a big commitment for a mother of two who works 12-hour shifts.

Const. Ed de Jong, 43, is a recent arrival to the central Island region.

He moved to Gabriola with his family in January after serving in Terrace, B.C. His reason for getting in the saddle for the 2013 Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock is simply to offer something back to the community in which he works.

“For me, being in the position I’m in as an RCMP member, the ability to give back to the community is a big thing for me and just the fact that this event supports kids with cancer makes it such an easy decision to do,” de Jong said.

With two children – a son, 11,

and daughter, 14 – who are healthy, de Jong counts his blessings. His father-in-law is a cancer survivor.

Living on Gabriola Island means catching a ferry to Nanaimo to meet up with other team members for training rides out of Parksville and Nanaimo. The time and transportation restrictions have translated into de Jong doing most of his training alone on Gabriola roads. A 90-kilometre ride means three laps around the island.

Oceanside RCMP’s Tour de Rock rider Cpl. Jesse Foreman said he was inspired to get involved by “looking at my own healthy kids and when I saw some who weren’t healthy I wanted to do something.”

His boys are currently seven and nine, making their understanding and support important to Foreman as he squeezes training between his family and full-time job at the Oceanside detachment where he’s in charge of community policing.

Like his fellow riders, he’s been touched by cancer in his family with a grandfather, aunt and uncle all dealing with the disease on some level.

He is also inspired by five-yearold Lucas, the junior rider he’s been teamed up with. The local kid was in and out of the hospital for eight months and lost his kidney to cancer, but is now in remission.

Foreman said that other than having to go back to Children’s Hospital every four months for tests until he’s 18, “you can’t tell him apart from any other kid.”

For these three riders, they say it’s the least they can do to support these kids.

Portal Players Dramatic Society is holding auditions for its musical The Wizard of Oz, set to play at The Capitol Theatre in February and March 2014.

Roles include the main character actors (singing required), along with chorus (which may include some minor acting parts and /or off stage chorus only).
