Fireworks destroy two houses teens were playing with ‘bangers’ in backyard

A group of teens playing with fireworks set a pair of homes ablaze Friday night in east Maple Ridge.

The fire started around 10:40 p.m. outside a house in the 11400 block of 234A Street, but quickly spread to a neighbouring property.

Fire chief Dane Spence said the fire was sparked by fireworks, which were being lit in the backyard of one house.

One of the fireworks started a small fire under the porch, which rapidly raced up to the roof, then engulfed a home next door.

The glow of the large fire could be seen from the Golden Ears Bridge.

Both homes were completely destroyed in the blaze, but no one was injured.

Spence said residents of the house where the fire started alerted neighbours to the fire.

“Everyone was outside by the time crews arrived,” he added.

Realtor survives shots to head Former Ridge councillor recovering after surgery

A realtor and former Maple Ridge councillor who was shot on a rural Maple Ridge property Saturday is recovering following surgery.

Franz Prokop, who works for Macdonald Realty, remains in stable condition after being shot

multiple times in the head just after 12:30 p.m. on a property on Lougheed Highway, east of 240th Street.

Ridge Meadows RCMP said a man called 911 to report he had been shot.

The former municipal councillor also managed to flag down a passing car, and an off-duty paramedic was one of the first people on scene.

Prokop was airlifted to hospital as police rushed to shut down a long stretch of Lougheed Hwy., from 240th Street towards Mission.

Bus driver still on recovery road S tor y by Phil Melnychuk

R

egulars who ride TransLink buses, the folks on the daily grind, may not know it, but there are some people who rely on them, just a bit.

After a while, the bus drivers who carry them around to work, shopping and home get to know their regular riders. Drivers can’t help but relax a bit with some familiar faces on board as they move their big New Flyer buses along the routes.

“We count on those relationships with our passengers,” says transit operator Lori Jackart. “Because they’re our back up.”

She knows.

Two of those regular Maple Ridge transit users saved her life on March 5, 2010.

It was late in the afternoon and Jackart was at the east end of the No. 701 route in Maple Ridge, picking up passengers at 248th Street, ready to head back into town, when a man got on and asked how to get to 238th Street.

Another driver had warned her about someone who was upset and he was right. The man got on the bus screaming.

“He wanted directions to 238th Street and I gave him directions and he called me a liar. He was on something.”

She thought he was going to take a seat and was preparing to get underway.

“Then he came around the corner from behind me and he grabbed me by the throat.”

The man rammed her head into headrest of the driver’s seat, squeezing.

When she tried to grab the radio, her attacker braced himself and further jammed her into the seat.

“I remember hitting the assault button and saying, ‘Get off me.’ “ It happened so fast.

“You’re not thinking of trying to get out of it. You just can’t believe it’s happening.”

That’s when the old couple jumped in, with the lady using her cane and the husband grabbing the man by the neck.

“Between the two of them, they dragged him off. I was taking them to mass. Those people saved my life that day. It would have been very different if they had not been there that day.”

While Jackart was lucky to get help that day, Jackart also wants help from the law and is supporting Saskatchewan MP Ralph Goodale’s campaign to amend the Criminal Code. Goodale wants any assault on bus drivers to be an aggravating factor in sentencing, so people think twice before venting on bus drivers.

Jackart says she just wants to balance out the bad thing that happened to her with something good, such as a tougher law to protect bus drivers.

“I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else.”

The incident is now more than three years old, but Jackart still feels the effects, even though she’s

She has trouble sleeping, has post traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and gets agitated easily. It’s been tough on her family.

“We’ve all had to relearn to live with me,” she added.

The attacker damaged her vocal chords so she can’t speak for long periods without her voice going hoarse. When passengers board her bus, chit-chat is kept to a minimum.

She still has a lump in her neck from the strangulation.

While her attacker got three months of house arrest, she has to take a pill to sleep at night.

“My brain just does not shut

They’ve been shot, spat on, punched, pushed, stabbed and sexually assaulted. And to have several F-bombs tossed their way throughout the day – well, that’s just part of the job.

With their hands on the wheel, paying attention to the road and following their employer’s policy of non-confrontation, bus drivers are easy targets for those people who’ve just had a bad day.

“Verbal … is like daily,” says Kelly Wainwright, union representative, and a driver himself for 21 years.

When it comes to the No. 701 route that connects Coquitlam with Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge, and the route driver Lori Jackart was on when she was attacked, it’s “one of those identified routes that has more stresses on it,” said Wainwright. Statistically, there are more incidents on that route than the norm.

“Transit is so minimal up there [in east Maple Ridge]. They’re already frustrated” at waiting an hour for a bus, adds Jackart.

She said that serving the public can be an up and down experience.

Most people are nice and just want to get on the bus and mind their own business. Drivers are seen as part of the machine.

“Every day, you leave with different emotions as a bus driver.

Sometimes, it takes only one person to ruin your day. It will stay in your brain all day.”

One current aggravation remains passengers who don’t pay their fares. Coast Mountain Bus Company stresses that bus drivers aren’t enforcers, but mere collectors of bus fares. If someone boards a bus without paying, drivers can’t do much about it, although other pasdown.”

Jackart served her own fivemonth sentence because she couldn’t leave her house for that length of time because of panic attacks. It took a year and a half of counselling before she felt safe going outside.

“When I did go outside, I was looking for him, watching my back.”

Those who don’t are noticed. Anytime a non-paying passenger boards, drivers push a button and transit security takes notice so they can respond if the number of free riders in an area spikes.

According to Saskatchewan MP Ralph Goodale, more than 40 per cent of bus drivers have been assaulted, with five drivers a day across Canada being attacked. In Canada in 2011 – 2,061 drivers were attacked.

“This is simply unacceptable,” Goodale says. “The nature of their work puts bus drivers at heightened risk, so Parliament needs to recognize those dangers and take action to stop them.”

In June, Goodale introduced a private member’s bill to amend the Criminal Code, to make an attack on a bus driver an aggravating factor during sentencing.

Gone are the days when drivers simply would throw unruly passengers off their buses, says Wainwright.

Bus drivers are not bouncers or policemen, he points out. And Coast Mountain Bus training ensures that is not a response.

Cameras now posted in most buses help. Plastic shields, creating secure compartments for drivers, were tried but rejected. Many drivers felt claustrophobic and like to interact with their customers.

For any serious trouble, operators call transit security or transit police.

“There’s never, ever a delay,” getting police to respond to an incident.

“If I need a cop to be there, they’ll be there.”

Then they unfolded the bike rack and played on that. It was enough for Jackart to pack it in for another several months.

While she’s back behind the wheel again, driving buses based

out of the Port Coquitlam Transit Centre, there’s one challenge she’s yet to conquer – getting back on to the No. 701 route through Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.

Once her trainer took her out to the spot where she was attacked.

“I left the spot and still had heart palpitations,” she said.

“I’ve not had the courage to drive the 701. I’ve not driven it since that day.”

FOI request for MR council video leads nowhere

Nicole Read wanted answers about the video recording of the June 17 Maple Ridge committee of the whole meeting.

Instead, she only had more questions following the District of Maple Ridge’s refusal of her freedom of information request for a copy of the unedited recording and for documents related to the denial of public access to the video.

Read filed the FOI request after the video recording was edited, then posted on the district website, removing a portion where Coun.

Corisa Bell questioned staff and commented on the budget.

The district did so after legal advice, saying Maple Ridge could be liable if the staff member decided to sue.

“Am I expected to believe that the only individuals in the district who communicated about the issues outlined in the FOI are the mayor, [Coun.] Corisa Bell, yourself,” and two staff?” the Silver Valley resident asks legislative

services manager Ceri Marlo.

There’s no documentation in the response to the FOI for Couns.

Daykin said Tuesday that while the individual may not have complained, if the video was public, he might feel differently.

Read said Tuesday there has to be a balance between protecting the individual and giving the public access to information.

“Does this person actually believe that they need this level of protection?”

She’s also dismayed at not getting any documents from council

meetings, if there were any, to discuss the topic.

Instead, she was given only general correspondence, a copy of the mayor’s statement to the media, and files from Bell herself.

“I don’t see the right paper trail,” Read said.

According to Read, “That statement was OK, not only was it OK, it was endorsed. So the mayor allowed that statement to take place after he had removed a video where Corisa challenged a staff member.”

Asked about whether such a statement could be defamatory, Daykin said he didn’t know.

Read says the district could be harming Bell’s reputation by alleging defamation and failing to provide the video so the public could decide.

A bit bloated ICBC is hiking auto insurance premiums almost five per cent in the latest government tax gauge.

Make no mistake, the public insurer is just another arm of B.C.’s bloated government bureaucracy. This B.C. Liberal government’s constant messaging about what a low-tax regime it is offering rings hollow considering the premium it attaches to so many government services, from ferries, to MSP Premiums, even toll bridges.

Critics, including the Consumers Association of Canada, point out that ICBC has become a cash cow for the government. The association says that since taking office, the Liberals have taken more than $1.2 billion out of ICBC. Yet now ICBC says it needs 4.9 per cent more in basic insurance.

At the same time, the insurer forecasts a net income of $230 million this year and next.

The corporation is accumulating funds. In 2002, ICBC’s reserves were $314 million – and there should be surplus to safeguard an insurer against an unexpected spike in claims. But there was a loud protest from critics when the agency said it would bring the reserves to $1 billion. By 2010, they were at $3.8 billion.

There should be a formal determination of how much the Crown corporation needs in reserve, expressed as a percentage of the agency’s annual payout for injury settlements. The remainder of the reserves must be returned to B.C. drivers in the form of lower premiums.

ICBC interim president Mark Blucher tries to defend the 4.9 per cent increase as insignificant, saying that the hike in basic insurance premiums will be offset by better deals, which will be offered on optional insurance. For years, ICBC has been allowed to take the tactic of raising basic premiums, while lowering optional product prices to compete with private insurers.

There is only one good reason to have government in the insurance business – cheaper insurance for taxpayers. But it’s not.

More affordable insurance could be had through private companies – a consumer need only log into the website of an Alberta insurer and get an online quote for their vehicle and coverage to see that.

Back to school labour disputes VICTORIA – Another school year dawns in B.C., with the prospect of disruptive labour disputes.

First up are 27,000 support staff, in a legal strike position.

These are the teacher aides, custodians, bus drivers and crossB.C. Views ing guards. Most are members of the Cana- Tom Fletcher dian Union of Public Employees, with a few Teamsters and other locals scattered around the 60 school districts.

Public discussion about these disputes usually focuses on wage increases, which CUPE members in schools haven’t seen for four years. Their current deals expired more than a year ago, after they were subject to the same two-year wage freeze imposed on the rest of government.

The B.C. government moved from the post-recession wage freeze to a system they call “co-operative gains,” where raises must be financed by savings in other areas of the operation. Only two provincial employee groups have yet to do this: school support staff and teachers.

(Education Minister Peter Fassbender confirmed last week that teacher raises will be funded by extra transfers from the provincial treasury as they try to get a long-term deal. But that’s a topic for another day.)

CUPE, the largest union in the country, has a sophisticated media campaign to generate public sympathy. We are repeat-

edly reminded not only that the last raise was 2009, but that the “average” pay is a mere $24,000 a year. If that number is accurate, it reflects a large number of part-timers.

Let’s look at a few provisions CUPE doesn’t talk about, on behalf of those selfemployed taxpayers who have no paid holidays, no employer pension or benefits and no paid overtime, but are expected to help pay all of the above to government workers.

The 60 contracts have many variations, but core elements are the same. In the Central Okanagan school district, the starting CUPE wage rate is $17.37 an hour. The top rate is $26.59, or $28.78 for workers who qualify for a “trades adjustment.”

All contracts have rigid seniority and “bumping” clauses to ensure that new employees absorb any reductions in working hours. From a taxpayer’s perspective, this leads to the maximum number of employees making the highest wages.

Overtime in Central Okanagan is time and a half for the first two hours, and double time after that. Contracts also include the provision that unscheduled overtime is subject to a four-hour minimum. It’s amazing how often an unexpected hour of work can arise when it’s paid at quadruple time.

The Surrey school district contract details how even “spare board” employees are to be enrolled in the municipal pension plan, a defined-benefit system most private-sector employees can only dream about.

Then there are paid sick days. The Canadian Taxpayers’ Federation reports that

the average B.C. private sector worker took 7.4 sick days last year. The public sector average was 12.

The Surrey contract details the windfall of unused sick days that must be paid out to employees who retire as early as age 55. The maximum is 150 days, for a lavish perk only available to employees hired before July 1, 1996. Even so, we’ll be paying these bonuses out for years to come.

It goes on and on. Six weeks’ paid vacation after 20 years, with an extra day added for every year after that.

There are many little things, such as a $60 “swimsuit allowance” for teacher aides who take part in swimming instruction.

This is not to devalue the work done by these people. It is to suggest that given the growing gap between public and private employment benefits, finding savings is reasonable.

The News/letters ‘People can’t eat shopping malls’

Editor, The News: Re: Farmland OK’d for new road, mall (The News, Aug. 16).

My concern is simply this: the more land that is taken out of ALR, the more will be developed into commercial and residential properties.

It will not stop at 33 hectares. This is proven to be true.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, they can only build so far.

A few years ago, I met a couple in their 30s who moved here from Ontario. They witnessed development similar to this, which eventually removed all the farmland and recreational areas.

I don’t know how many letters you received from people who are against this development, if any. None were published.

Even as far away as Los Angeles, this kind of development has occurred, and look at the sprawl in that area.

People cannot eat shopping malls and houses.

Be careful longboarders Editor, The News: Last week I witnessed an event that was literally inches from being a tragedy.

The tragedy in my mind is the callous disregard shown by a longboarding young man for the rules of the road and his own safety.

Not only cruising through an intersection at night with no reflective clothing or safety gear, but through an amber light while using some sort of electronic device.

I’d already seen your companion go through the intersection, so was wary enough to be watching – but the driver to my right would have seriously injured or killed both of you had he not looked at the right time.

I’m angry that you put yourself in the situation where I could have seen a young life snuffed right in front of my eyes – a sight that would haunt me forever.

Using our roads comes with responsibility whether you are a driver, pedestrian or skater – and your life is more precious than any text message could ever be.

I believe the house is 103 years old, being built in 1910 (Donald Luxton and Associates 2009).

William Henry Menzies and his brother David came west in 1890 to find a better life. They found carpentry and house building opportunities (also rebuilding the Gastown Hotel when it burnt down in 1886). Brother Albert Hugh came and joined them and was also building houses (1891 census).

The British Columbia Drainage and Diking Company owned by David Openheimer, Edward Mohun and A. W. Vowel planned to get thousands of acres of Pitt Meadows land at $5.75 an acre, build the dikes and sell it for $100 an acre. When the Fraser River flooded in 1898, the dikes were washed out, resulting in the enterprise failure and the land reverting to the Dominion. This default resulted in the Government of B.C. offering the land to homesteaders who would farm it.

William Henry Menzies obtained the land at Sheridan Hill as a homestead in 1890. A cabin was build and eventually the farmhouse was built in 1910.

Slim offerings for at-risk youth Editor, The News: Re: Time to reopen the doors of Riverview Hospital (The News, Aug. 28).

“Government has worked with health authorities to create facilities throughout the province with the appropriate supports, treatment and facilities.”

Interesting, but as a front line youth worker supporting Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows at-risk youth, I am, oh so unclear as to what, exactly, this means.

For adults? For youth? For children?

For all of the above?

I’d like a list of these facilities ASAP, as my resource list is apparently lacking in what we have to offer.

And youth workers can hardly afford to fall short on the slim offerings we have for our youth and their families – within our community, and within B.C.

And when my clients turn 19, I will surely need these addresses and emails and program descriptions to pass along to them in their search for answers and peace.

Once youth in our community are able to accept supports – meaning housing and any addiction issues stabilized and a trusting, established relationship with a youth or outreach worker firmly in place, they must then be put on wait lists for outpatient mental health support – sometimes waiting months, sometimes not being accepted – often finding ways to help themselves while they languish in a system that never really sees them, or their families.

And concurrent disorders – mental health and addiction – I believe there is an outpatient program at B.C.

Children’s Hospital, which I don’t see working for a whole lot of youth in our community (and many others), for very apparent reasons.

I don’t know who the government talks to about these things, but neither myself nor my colleagues (front line workers) have ever had the privilege of sharing even one of our days spent supporting this community’s extremely at-risk youth with anyone, from any level of government.

If it is really just the health authority they are looking to for the truths of society’s mental health day-to-day life, it should be clear, by now, that there are other places holding, at least in part, truths and pieces of the answer.

Issue of access to dental care is important Editor, The News: Re: Hooped without a good dental plan (Sidewinder, Aug. 23).

Like any columnist, Mr. Sandy Macdougall has an obligation to get his facts right.

In justifying illegal dentistry by unqualified and unsafe practitioners, he has undermined the more important public policy debate around access to dental care and funding for oral health.

The fact that Tung Sheng Wu operated out of his home was not the problem.

Real dentists who work out of their homes must meet the high standards of competent care expected of every dentist registered with the College of Dental Surgeons of B.C. Their facilities must meet infection control standards established by

CDSBC, as well as building code and other safety standards and regulations.

Mr. Wu did none of these things.

He risked his clients’ health for his own gain.

We do not deny that illegal dental practices may exist, and the Tung Sheng Wu case may spark similar reports.

However, we have no evidence that they are widespread.

Anyone can confirm that their dentist is registered by going to the Directory of Dentists at www.cdsbc.org.

If the person they are seeing for dental care is not registered or licensed, they should contact CDSBC. We cannot assume that the cost of dentistry is the sole reason Mr. Wu’s clientele chose to go to him. Evidence indicates that many of his patients were affluent and could well afford to go to

a registered dentist. Others may have come from jurisdictions where dentistry is not regulated and may not have known he was operating illegally.

The facts are that the overwhelming majority of dentists are highly competent, ethical, caring professionals, many of whom make special payment arrangements for patients in financial need. Many dentists donate their time at free or reduced-cost dental clinics around the province (for a listing, go to www.bcdental.org).

The issue of access to dental care is an important one. It requires a thoughtful and informed conversation.

Mr. Macdougall’s column falls far short of the mark.

TransLink must not allow anti-Israel adverts Editor, The News: I am deeply disturbed to learn about TransLink’s agreement to run distorted anti-Israel advertisements on its buses and SkyTrain stations.

Jewish contiguous presence on the land of Israel is a record of fact, while the four-part advertisement falsely depicts a map of “Palestine” superimposed on the modern state of Israel.

In truth, an official state of Palestine has never existed. Never.

While Israel and the Palestinian Authority are currently engaged in peace negotiations to resolve their differences and reach a twostate solution, TransLink will be running anti-Semitic ads that promote misinformation against a sovereign nation and its people – thus aiding and abetting groups that incite hatred – when its own mission statement proclaims inclusivity.

TransLink’s policies, which hold that Vancouver’s public transportation system must

be a safe and welcoming environment for all racial, ethnic, religious and minority groups are violated. In fact, the transit authority policy publicly states that, “No advertisement will be accepted which TransLink, in the exercise of its sole discretion, considers to be of questionable taste or in any way offensive in the style, content or method of presentation.”

TransLink’s disregard for its own policies to create a safe place for all on our publicly funded transit system is

unacceptable. It sets a precedent that is dangerous not only for the Jewish community, but eventually for other minority groups as well.

Decision makers at TransLink should be ashamed – and demoted or fired – for this ugly incident. This ad must not be allowed to become a precedent for future ads on our buses or at our SkyTrain Stations.

Our personal freedoms depend on it.

Trapping is cruel, inhumane and out of place today Editor, The News: Re: Coyote steals teen’s pet dog (The News, Aug. 28).

I’m very sorry for the loss of this little dog taken by a coyote. However, I feel the need to speak up for the coyote as this animal is just trying to survive and unfortunately is an opportunist, as we all would be if we were hungry.

The area where this happened is the

coyotes home, as well. The coyote has a right to be there.

Hiring someone to set a trap is a horrible idea – trapping is cruel, inhumane and totally out of place in our society. It is indiscriminate and by hiring a trapper, you are endangering other wildlife and domestic pets, as well.

If you have ever witnessed an animal suffering in a trap you would think

again.

Please do not take this route – we need to learn to live along side the wildlife, as painful as this may be at times.

Those with small pets in rural areas need to be vigilant and perhaps keep their pets inside, out of danger.

Drivers, slow down in school zones

Police are out in full force this week to enforce speed limits around schools in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.

Statistics show that during the first week of school, two children in British Columbia will die as a result of injury.

The most frequently reported activity that results in injury or death

of a child is crossing at an intersection, followed by running onto the road.

Ridge Meadows RCMP’s traffic section, general duty officers, youth resource officers and Speed Watch volunteers plan to be stationed in and around school areas to enforce traffic rules.

“Parents rushing to drop kids off at their school often speed through other school zones to get there,” said Sgt. Dale Somerville, of-

ficer in charge of Ridge Meadows’ traffic section.

“Remember, we are all road users and must share the road responsibly.”

Drivers should also keep in mind that excessive speeding in a school zone (70 km/hr in a 30 km/hr zone) will lead to their vehicle being impounded for seven days, as per the legislation.

“We first thought someone had had a heart attack,” said Jarry, from Kamloops.

The westbound lanes of the highway were still closed when Jarry and his girlfriend were heading back home and the black SUVs were still parked by the side of the road.

“What I found odd was their license plates were covered in cardboard,” said Jarry.

Macdonald Realty would not confirmed if Prokop was showing the property to a potential buyer when he was shot.

“Macdonald Realty at this time is making no comment about Mr.

Prokop,” said managing broker Harvey Exner.

“A police investigation is underway and we do not want to compromise the investigation.”

The property in question has been connected to several police search warrants in the past few years.

It has previously housed a marijuana grow operation and a methamphetamine lab. In 2010, a semi-trailer filled with a million dollars worth of brand name merchandise was torched on the property and eight people were arrested.

Prokop is a well-known realtor in Maple Ridge and served on council in the 1980s.

Suing for millions Franz Prokop has filed a lawsuit against another realtor over a $3.6 million lottery ticket.

The civil suit, filed in New Westminster Supreme Court, alleges Peter Dushop, who was the son of Prokop’s common-law wife Angelika Dushop, took a lottery ticket Prokop purchased and cashed it just prior to the one year expiry date in July 2008.

Dushop’s $3.6 million windfall was covered by the media.

He said then that he kept his winning ticket safely tucked away in a bank vault for 12 months, while he has decided what to do with

the money.

Filed five months later, in December 2008, the lawsuit claims Peter Dushop was living with his mother and Prokop when the lottery ticket was purchased in Port Coquitlam.

It alleges Dushop knew where Prokop stashed his tickets.

The lawsuit has wound its way through court since 2008. A judge issued orders for Prokop’s investigators to view Dushop’s phone and credit card records so he could prove the Port Moody realtor was not in the area when the lottery ticket was bought.

A hearing scheduled to take place in January 2014.

Parents likely liable for damage caused by fire Fire from front

The Pitt Meadows Fire Department was called in to help Maple Ridge crews extinguish the fire.

Since 2005, the sale, purchase and lighting of fireworks in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows has been restricted to individuals who hold a certificate from Natural Resources Canada’s Ex-

plosives Regulatory Division. The course costs $100.

The fireworks bylaw allows RCMP, bylaws officials and firefighters to ticket offenders with fines of $1,000 for selling fireworks and $200 for setting them off without a permit.

None of the people who were lighting fireworks

on Friday had a permit.

Friday’s fire demonstrate how dangerous fireworks can be.

“I don’t believe they can be used safely on a small lot,” said Spence.

“If we needed proof that the bylaw is necessary or not, this is exactly what we are trying to avoid.”

said since teenagers were lighting the fireworks, it’s most likely their parents will be liable for the damage the fires caused.

Ridge RCMP officer charged with fraud An officer with the Ridge Meadows RCMP detachment is facing charges for forging a document while on duty.

Const. Curtis Genest faces one count each of uttering a forged document and fraud.

Police allege Genest submitted an altered internal administrative document on July 2.

An investigation into the allegations began the same day and eventually resulted in criminal charges, which were sworn in Port Coquitlam Provincial Court on Aug. 20.

“It is alleged he forged a document and passed it off as being genuine, which is an offence under the Criminal Code of Canada” said Insp. David Fleugel, acting officer in charge of

Ridge Meadows RCMP. “Honesty and integrity are values that every police officer must demonstrate each and every day without fail. As the matter is before the courts, we are not able to provide any further information or comment at this time.”

Const. Genest is currently on administrative duties and will face an internal disciplinary review.

He is set to appear in court Sept. 19.

50 charges A 41-year-old man faces more than 50 criminal charges after a recent raid at a Maple Ridge residence uncovered dozens of fire-

arms, including machine guns and assault rifles.

Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Jamie Chung said officers raided the home on June 12 and seized 33 weapons, an automatic Sten machine gun, a fully automatic Galil assault rifle, an AK-74 assault rifle, a Glock 17 handgun, a Taser, and an M1 Carbine.

Other weapons found at the home included a butterfly knife, grenade and 62 banned ammunition magazines.

RCMP also seized body armour, 30,000 rounds of ammunition, 60,000 counterfeit DVDs and marijuana.

Port Haney Day marks history and future staff reporter

The Port Haney neighbourhood gathers on Haney Wharf next Sunday for Port Haney Day. It’s the third year for the event, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 8.

“We’ll celebrate the revitalization of the neighbourhood right at the original focal point, the wharf.

“It’s a spectacular setting for a festival that brings people together to enjoy good food, music and performances and an outdoor mar-

ket,” says Graeme Ross, in a news release.

Ross is a co-chair of the Port Haney Neighbourhood Change Initiative, which has been working to build the cohesiveness of the area and plan its future.

“We want our neighbourhood association to be fun and our events to celebrate the great assets that we have in the neighbourhood like the Billy and the wharf.

We’d like more people to join in the fun.”

The Billy Miner is planning a lemonade stand while there also will be an outdoor mar-

ketplace, musical acts and Zumba dancers.

Ian Mcleod will provide two historic walking tours, one at 11 a.m. and another at 1 p.m.

The Downtown Maple Ridge Business Improvement Association has helped with the planning and the business owners have provided door prizes and handouts.

“We have hundreds of prizes to distribute during the celebration,” says Hari Pal, a member of the Neighbourhood Change Initiative.

Recalling the University Women’s Club Looki ng Bac k by Sheila Nickols

W

hen Marian Mussallem died on Aug. 4 in Richmond, she was well remembered by many friends and relatives in Maple Ridge.

She had lived here with her late husband Peter Mussallem for many years and been an active part of several groups in the community.

Marian (nee Robinson) grew up in Esquimalt, a suburb of Victoria on Vancouver Island. A brilliant student, she went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in chemistry at UBC in 1942, followed by a Master’s degree in 1944. This was an unusual ambition for a woman at this time, when fields of study most commonly chosen were teaching, nursing or secretarial work.

As a university graduate, Marian joined the University Women’s Club of Maple Ridge.

She had not been part of the group when it wrote and published Maple Ridge – A History of Settlement in 1972.

The University Women’s Club of Maple Ridge puppet group in the early 1980s.

Club member, Daphne Sleigh, was the first curator of the Maple Ridge Museum, at a time when it was housed in the library in the Centennial building.

When Louise Poole inspired the University Women’s Club to begin a puppetry project, Marion Mussallem became an active member.

Louise wrote the scripts for a series of puppet plays, some based on stories such as Cinderella, and some original. She had often written plays for a drama group when she had been an English teacher at Maple Ridge High School. Group members crafted hand puppets, learned their

lines, and practiced moving around the stage.

These puppet plays were performed for many local organizations, and frequently to school groups. The women also conducted puppet workshops for students, giving them a chance to handle the puppets and put together a short play of their own. Three of the most popular plays

performed by the University Women were episodes from Winnie the Pooh.

The more elaborate puppet plays required a larger stage than the first one used. Marion with the help of her husband Peter designed and built a new stage, which had the advantage of being portable in pieces in the back of a station wagon. Part of the entertainment was the sight of five or six women putting the new stage together complete with curtains, before each presentation.

Today’s photo, taken in the early 1980s, shows members of the puppet group on their way to present a play to another university women’s club in Kelowna.

The puppet group continued to perform their plays until ill health forced Louise to retire.

The puppet scripts and puppets were all given to the Maple Ridge Museum, where they were on display for a time.

When the Maple Ridge branch of the University Women’s Club closed down, it left a legacy of the proceeds from sale of its history of Maple Ridge, along with the remaining copies from the fifth reprinting.

The Maple Ridge Historical Society has plans to reprint it again before the stock runs out.

Wallace wins freeride amateur title Local rider takes top prize in Vernon to ensure overall championship

Liam Wallace gave himself the perfect birthday present on Saturday.

The 16-year-old freeride mountain biker celebrated his birthday with a win at the Silver Style Jump Jam in Vernon, B.C. on the weekend.

The win capped off a stellar season on the Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour for Wallace as the victory was enough for him to secure the overall amateur title for the 2013 season.

It also secured a sponsorship to ride on the Morpheus pro team in the 2014 season.

“He’s certainly exceeded all my expectations,” said his father Andy.

“He’s had a great season and is looking forward to turning pro.”

A total of 52 riders could drop into the freeride course as often as they liked during the three hours of qualifying before the field was cut down to the Top 12 in both the amateur and open/pro categories.

Then it was off a two run final.

Wallace’s final run score of 89 points would have been enough to secure the victory in the pro category, as well.

Wallace easily topped the field, as Caleb Holonko of North Vancouver took home second place in the amateur division with a score

of 71.5, and Lewis Seagram of Nelson finished third with a score of 68.5 The win in the Okanagan comes on the heels of the a strong showing at the Bearclaw Invitational at Mt. Wash-

ington on Vancouver Island.

The event follows Whistler’s Crankworx and featured most of the Top 25 pro riders in the world.

Wallace, an amateur, had to qualify for the

finals. He secured third place in the amateur division and finished 14th overall.

Wallace started the season with a first-place trophy from the Ranchstyle Mountain Bike Festival in Grand Junc-

tion, Colorado.

It was the first North American stop on the Freestyle Mountain Bike World Tour “He’s really looking forward to taking the next step in riding and competing against the

best in the world,” said his father.

He said his son, who slits his time between Maple Ridge and Mission, will compete in some events in Europe, as well as across Canada and the U.S. next year.

LeBlanc celebrates with National Women’s Soccer League crown

A league title in the National Women’s Soccer League is exactly the motivation Maple Ridge’s Karina LeBlanc needed to continue her dream of playing in the 2015 World Cup on home soil.

LeBlanc helped lead the Portland Thorns FC to a 2-0 win over the Western New York Flash to win the inaugural National Women’s Soccer League Championship before 9,129 fans at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester, N.Y. on Saturday night.

“Having such a great ending to the season is going to be a catalyst to motivate me to keep going towards my goal of playing in the next World Cup and the Olympics.

LeBlanc said playing in the soccer-mad city

of Portland has been one of the highlights of her pro career and it has stoked her drive to continue to play internationally for Team Canada.

“We routinely play in front of crowds of 17,000 in Portland,” said Leblanc, “but it feels like 60,000. It has a real European atmosphere at the games. It’s a soccer crazy city.”

Portland also featured Canadian Olympic hero Christine Sinclair. The team won the NWSA title on the road despite being shorthanded for the final 34 minutes of the game.

Rookie Kathryn Williamson was tossed from the game for her second yellow card.

LeBlanc kept the Flash off the board with two spectacular saves early in the match, deflecting a header from Western New York forward Samantha Kerr that caromed off the crossbar in the 12th minute. She was also able to grab a failed clearance attempt by

her defense a few moments later, ending the threat. LeBlanc said her team faced adversity all season and Saturday’s victory was testament to her team’s perseverance. But she said the biggest thing coming from the win is the will to keep on. LeBlanc has appeared in 105 games for Canada and is setting herself up for one more run at a 2015 World Cup being played across Canada and 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

“Having the World Cup being played on our home soil, that’s certainly the goal for me,” said the 33-year-old goalkeeper. “I’m hoping everything works out. I can only control what I can control.”

LeBlanc will take the next six weeks off from the pitch and plans to do some speaking engagements before she meets up with her Canadian teammates to start training for the 2014 season.

Bluegrass lovers jam the fairgrounds staff reporter

If you walked around the maze of tents and RVs at the True North Bluegrass Festival, you would have heard banjos and guitars strumming into the wee hours of the night.

“What’s really very curious to someone who has never been part of this is there are people who don’t go to the main stage at all,” said organizer Rob Hornsey. “For them, it’s all about jamming.”

The inaugural True North Bluegrass Festival, held over the Labour Day long weekend in Maple Ridge, drew more than 1,000 people Saturday and Sunday. More than 150 tents and RVs camped at the Albion Fair-

grounds and the festival drew people from all over the Pacific Northwest, the Kootenays, Vancouver Island, Alberta and the Fraser Valley.

“It’s a whole circuit of people who spend the whole summer going from festival to festival and this is always the culmination for them,” says Hornsey.

He and his team of organizers cobbled together the three-day event in the span of four month after learning the Chilliwack Bluegrass Festival was no more.

He has a five-year plan to turn the Albion Fairgrounds into a destination for bluegrass lovers.

“Many people said this was a much better venue for them than Chilliwack,” Hornsey added.

“People had rave reviews about the venue and committed to coming back. It was pretty spectacular. The performers were world-class.”

The festival featured seven main acts, including the Crowe Brothers from Nashville, Tennessee and High Plains Tradition from Colorado.

Hornsey and his team set three goals when they decided to host the festival: put on a good show; rebrand the Chilliwack festival and relocate it; and build a network of volunteers, sponsors and supporters to see the festival through for at least four more years.

“I think we achieved those three goals in a stellar way,” he said.

Faye, loving wife of 60 years; daughters Debra (Alex), & grandson Lyle, Stacey (Jason), & grandsons David & Neil, Meryl, & granddaughters, Shandi, Stacey, and grandsons Dylan and Wyatt, great grandchildren Cameron & Kallen. Sisters Joy and Beulah, as well as many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly‌ If you new Stan, then you would know that he was a great caring man, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend, always willing to help and especially lend a hand.

He would always say, “I will be there, before you hang up the phone.â€? When you offered to pay, he would put his hand out and refuse‌ Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, Sept 7th, 2013 at Bakerview Celebration Center, 34863 Cemetery Ave. Mission, BC. In lieu of flowers donations to the Langley Hospice Society would be greatly appreciated.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Debra’s sudden passing. She is survived by her loving partner of 28 years Gregor Tirrell and many relatives in various places.

She is predeceased by her parents Milton and Edna and her brother Dale. This extraordinary woman managed to do so much and touch so many people in her relatively short life. Debra was born and raised in Fernie. She moved to Abbotsford in her 20’s, where she took up Skydiving with a passion and competed very successfully for many years.

She had a career with CPR as a train dispatcher and was able to leave in her 40’s. She then became a golf pro and taught lessons for several years. Golf was a great passion of her’s also. Debra was always willing to help people and did so right to the end by successfully donating organs to transplant recipients on her last day. She will be loved and sorely missed. In lieu of flowers please donate to BC Organ Transplant Society, BFM Thrift Store or a charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Debra’s Life will be held on Sunday, September 8th, 2013 at 11:00am at Garden Hill Funeral Chapel, 11765 224th St, Maple Ridge.
