gang of bikers will be rolling into town for the Langley Cruise-In, but this motley crew isn’t looking for any trouble.
They’re the Seattle Cossacks — a motorcycle stunt and drill team comprised of 15 men who perform jaw-dropping theatrics on 15 vintage motorcycles. Seattle Cossacks later. The first organizational meeting took place in January 1938 with a group of Seattle racers, riders, delivery personnel, businessmen, and other interested participants. By April they had a formal organization and a set of bylaws that included “’to entertain and promote the positive image of motorcycling. Nowadays, the group also puts a strong emphasis on promoting rider safety. The free show, which is slated to take place in the Casino South-East parking lot (near the Cruise-In Marketplace) is a must-see, says Brown. “You definitely don’t want to miss this fun and exciting show — come out and let’s cheer them on! While the Seattle Cossacks have performed several times in Canada, from Victoria to Calgary — including performances at Expo 86 and a BC Lions half-time show
— it’s been more than 10 years since they’ve been back. “We are truly honoured to be part of this great event and can’t wait to entertain the crowds and see all of the great entries,â€? said Seattle Cossacks team captain Sam Chedester, who notes he’s big fan of the event’s charitable aspect. “It is quite impressive that all of the proceeds go straight to the charities and we find it commendable that there are so many volunteers putting on the Langley Cruise-In that help make it possible.â€? one of Cruise-In’s biggest attractions. And it’s not a car. It’s the crooning voice and swinging hips of Elvis Elite. Back for his eighth Cruise-In, Steve Elliott, aka Elvis Elite, will once again be wowing the women spectators of the car show with his tribute performances. “I’m the babysitter,” Elliott joked. “The guys drop their wives off and go look at cars for three hours.” And he does a great job entertaining.

bright pink 19-foot long 1966 Cadillac DeVille. Complete with a microphone, shiny chrome and a pink cheetah skin hood, the car is as much a part of the Elvis Elite show as Elliott himself. He is also a proud owner of an orange ‘56 Ford, which he has often used during Cruise-In performances. “My favourite part of the show is watching it all come to life,” Elliot said. “At 9:30 in the morning there is a buzz, by 10 o’clock it’s crowded and by 10:45 there’s hundreds by the stage. Everyone is out to have a good time, it’s magical.” Elliott has only had his alter ego for about 10 years. Prior to becoming a tribute performer, he had a very successful career as a political cartoonist. But one night at a karaoke bar changed all of that. By chance he got up and performed a song by Elvis, and by chance he happened to be good — really good. So good that, by 2004, he was named the Top Canadian Tribute Champion at the Pacific Northwest Elvis Festival. Performing Elvis tributes became a full-time job. “I like the innocence of Elvis in the early years of rock ‘n roll, before the jumpsuits of the ‘70s,” Elliott said. “He was just hardworking and talented. And the way the music moved him.

But long lines at the cash register never faze Corinna. “It’s great to see people spending money at the souvenir tent — it’s something they can feel good about because all of the money from the sales goes to the charities in our community.”

Car Care And it’s a good thing Terry hasn’t let being M.I.A. at his favourite event grind his gears, especially since the two men reside on the same acreage. The property is home to an impressive fleet of 50 classic cars that both men can often be found tinkering with. “When you have so many it can be a bit daunting — it’s really nice to have some help,” noted Terry. For the Johnson family, motor oil seems to flow through their veins; It was Terry’s late father (Blake’s grandfather) who got him hooked on classic cars at an early age. “I have a 1927 Diana that my dad bought when I was just six months old,” said Terry, who has taken the hot wheels to the Cruise-In in the past. “He collected my whole life and passed his collection on to my brother and myself.” While Terry always looks forward to checking out the various rides at the Cruise-In, it’s the people, not the cars, that make the event, he notes. “Yes, there are some really great cars, but it’s mostly about the people – the cars are how you meet them. I love to stop and chat; everyone has such great stories to tell.” Blake still gets a lot of flak from the Cruise-In fans in his family for his ‘wedding schedule mishap.’ His bride cuts him some slack — even though the event falls on their anniversary. “I go about every second year or so — this year is my year to go,” he said. Terry hasn’t decided which car will be making an appearance in his absence, but his nephew doesn’t seem too concerned about his ride. “I’ll take whatever car will start,” laughed Blake. ■

ULTIMATE GARAGE
I
t’s hard to believe, but the Ultimate Garage raffle is back and even bigger than before.
Worth a staggering $19,963.31, this year’s Ultimate Garage features 68 different items, ranging in price from $4.99 to $3,500, which are donated to the raffle by Lordco Auto Parts and its suppliers. It’s every mechanic’s dream shop in one package. “It has almost everything a home shop would need,” said Mike Coates, branch manager of Lordco Auto Parts in Langley. “Anyone who has a shop established already or just a little garage at home would find it really useful.” Since the show’s beginning, Lordco has been sponsoring the Langley Good Times Cruise-In by building a “garage” worth of tools and equipment to put up for raffle. All proceeds go directly to the Cruise-In charities, which Coates says is the best part of the whole kit. “I am a hot rod guy, I see cars all the time so I don’t usually go to other car shows. But the one thing I like about the Cruise-In, and I think it makes it different than other car shows, is it’s 100 per cent charity,” he said. “And I think it’s just awesome that they do that. It pushes me to put together a great garage.” It takes eight to 10 hours to set up the majority of the kit, which will be on display at the Cruise-In. The only item that won’t be on display is the Rotary 9000 lb. 4 Post Hoist, which takes an incredible five hours to set up and five hours to take down. With a value of $3,499.99, this is the largest and most expensive items in the kit. Lordco even has to use a special truck

to transport the hoist’s 12-foot beams to the winner’s home. “The four-post hoist is really neat because a lot of people don’t have them. A lot of backyard guys would really like it,” Coates said. A previous year’s winner, Rick Sparrow, was overwhelmed by the amount of tools he had inherited through the raffle. “It was great, he couldn’t believe he had won it,” Coates said. “Then we started showing up with truck loads of stuff, and he’s like ‘where I am going to put all of this stuff?’ We had filled his shop, there wasn’t any room for anything else to put in it. “It’s pretty neat to see the expression on their faces and to watch them smile as you’re unloading all of the tools and equipment.” The Ultimate Garage has everything car savvy you can think of. Top items include a TCA 56” Roller Cabinet, worth $2,199.99, a 56” Top Chest Tool Box, worth $1349.99, an Eagle Air Compressor, worth $1299.99, a Millwaukee High Torque Impact & Ratchet set, worth $399.99 and a Shark Welders 140 Amp Mig Welder, worth $399.99. And with even more pieces ranging from a Waterloo Tool Box and a Equus Code Reader to a 2700PSI Pressure Washer, this Ultimate Garage is the envy of every man. And all of this can be yours for only $10. Tickets are on pre-sale at Lordco Auto Parts, 5825 200 St., from the end of August until the day of the event, with the remainder sold at the Cruise-In on Sept. 7. Cost is $10 for one ticket or $25 for three. With only 2,400 tickets issued, they are sure to be a hot item. Supplement to the Langley Times | September 3, 2013

who traveled up and down North America, all the way to California, to look for treasures to add to his collection. Fortunately for this motor head, he had no trouble finding the pieces he wanted to complete his impressive collection that truly is a blast from the past. “Whether you’re collecting sea shells, nail files or whatever, you get to know where to find what you need. Especially being a member of so many car clubs, all you have to do is put the word out that you are looking for this or that and someone will say, yea I know someone who will trade or sell for it, and this is just how the hobby goes.” His backyard gas station has all the bells and whistles of a pit stop you’d find in the ’50s, including everything from vintage road maps from the era of the family road trip to a pinball machine, working jukebox, and a ’50s-style A&W diner. Usually around once a week, Wellenbrink and his wife host an open house for car clubs to come pursue his backyard blast from the past. “We’ve probably had around 300 people just this past spring,” he said And while the car club members always seem to enjoy the tour, it’s his seven- year-old grandson who seems to enjoy it most when he visits. “Oh he loves it – he gets a real kick out of it,” laughed

t was a smooth move earlier this year into a new home for the Surrey Heritage Society’s collection of vintage vehicles. It will act as the foundation of a new transportation heri-
tage centre in Cloverdale. The trucks and associated hardware were relocated one and two at a time from their former home at the Teamsters Freight Museum in Port Coquitlam. It took a month, says Paul Orazietti, society treasurer and true believer in the collective power of shared passions to create magic. The society had been working since last fall to acquire and relocate the collection. The City of Surrey agreed to let the society use the former Surrey Museum building on the Cloverdale Fairgrounds as a temporary location, a decision that’s sparked the imagination of volunteers and supporters alike. The B.C. Transport Heritage Centre is now greeting visitors. It was open and attracted a large number of visits during the Cloverdale Rodeo in May. At present, it is open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is by donation.

Orazietti said as word has spread about the return of the trucks, more people have offered to get involved. “That’s where the magic comes from,” Orazietti said. “All of this gives people a reason to come together, to take care of part of our history.” The renovations cost about $25,000, covered thanks to fundraising, work in

But already there have been serious offers from private collectors who

would consider donating if there was a permanent display space. “That’s why this thing has enormous potential.” The society, which is dedicated to the preservation and conservation of heritage assets in the City of Surrey, also envisions working as an umbrella organization with other heritage groups. Surrey Heritage Society members – who include prominent local businessman Bruno Zappone – believe acquiring the collection will be a good fit for Cloverdale, and bolster the historic town centre as a heritage destination. The museum’s website is BCvintagetruckmuseum.org. And Orazietti said plans are in place so visitors will take self-guided tours using smartphones and QR codes. Surrey and Langley are among the most important trucking centres in B.C., a role that’s only growing, says Orazietti, who adds the society envisions a museum that preserves and shares the history of Surrey, and “the broader transportation history of B.C.” Another fascinating exhibit at the museum is some miniature scenes created by Gerald Siebert. One depicts an old truck hauling the original Surrey Town Hall, which is part of the museum complex now used by the truck museum, to the fairgrounds. Another shows a garage where a car is under repair. Orazietti says the museum is available for private tours and meetings, and would be of particular interest to car clubs as a meeting place. For more information, call 604-372-4093 or e-mail the museum at bcvintagetruckmuseum@shaw.ca. ■ — with files from Frank Bucholtz

ordie Johnston lives and breathes classic cars. When the Langley trucker isn’t hauling freight five to six days a weekk
across the border with his trusty sidekick, Mutley, he can be found under er the hood of one of his many vintage automobiles, tinkering away. Keeping him company is his loving wife, Darlene and their aforementioned ed pooch, Mutley, as well as a flock of ducks, which he refers to as ‘the choir’ and pet donkey, Jethrow. “You’re never alone out here,” he joked of his motley crew, while feeding Jethrow – a full stud that roams free on the 10.5 acre property – a peppermint. “They’re his favourite, he get’s so excited.” He’s also a fan of watching his master at work, but does get in way from time-to-time, especially when Gordie’s son comes to visit. “They don’t get along all that well,” joked Gordie. “Jethrow has pulled my son out from under the car by his pants while he working on it.”
Collecting and restoring cars has always been a hobby for Gordie, who purchased his first set of wheels at the age of 12 – a 1936 Chevrolet Coupe. Gordie was underage at the time, so begged his older brother to buy the car’s owner a case of beer in exchange for the old beater. Back then, a case was around $2.50 and Gordie saved his pennies earning 10 cents an hour pulling hay wagons. “We drove it like we stole it,” recalled Gordie with a playful smirk of his first ride. “I can’t say we didn’t run over a few flowerbeds.”

continued on next page You’ve probably already heard that most of the cars brought to transmission shops don’t need a new transmission. The vehicle must be properly test driven and subjected to a detailed diagnostic process before any shop can realistically say whether or not a major problem exists and how much it will cost. This is where we out perform everyone, including the dealers. For years, our customers have had the peace of mind knowing we repaired only what was necessary while building quality and value into every transmission. And at Atlas, you will talk to a technician, not a salesperson!
