Vehicle thefts up in Kimberley/Cranbrook

by RCMP Cpl. Chris Newel Over the past two months the Cranbrook and Kimberley detachments have noted a sharp increase in vehicle related thefts. This includes both thefts of and from vehicles.

In July there were 14 vehicles stolen, in August there were 13 vehicles stolen and six attempted thefts. Thefts from vehicles in July were 42, August 40.

Although the majority of these incidents took place in Cranbrook, both communities need to be vigilant.

A large number of these incidents, particularly thefts from

vehicles are crimes of opportunity and police strongly suggest you keep the vehicle locked.

Remove any valuables.

Considerable damage is caused when the vehicle is stolen or there are attempts to steal it. Police suggest an anti-theft device, alarms although a deterrent are not always taken seriously.

Hondas are listed in the top 10 stolen cars in Canada; although all vehicles are potential targets the thefts reported here follow a similar trend.

• Park in well-lit areas.

• Never leave valuables or packages in full view. Put them in the trunk.

• Park your car in the garage at night And, people just leave their keys in the ignition, while going in for a coffee and donut or warming up their car in the morning. Approximately 20% of all stolen cars have keys in them.

Celebrate harvest and 36 years of the Kootenay Country Fair

The Kootenay Country Fair has been celebrating harvest and crafting skills for 36 years. It is held at Fort Steele Heritage Town this Sunday, September 8, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There will be something for everyone to see, from garden produce and scarecrows, home baking and preserves, to needlework and photography.

The historic setting at Fort Steele adds to the old-time appeal of this fair and with regular gate admission waived on fair day, this is an affordable day of fun, food and entertainment for the entire family.

Prices are $4.50 for

adults, $3.50 for seniors and children age 6 to 13. Families pay $13.50 and children under 6 are free.

Admission includes access to the entire heritage site and there will be lots of activities the entire day, from demonstrations and a petting zoo to face painting and games entertainers and caricatures. “We want to have a community family day,” explains Trudy Larsen a longtime volunteer with the fair.

Families will not have to go hungry either.

There will be a pancake breakfast and barbecue lunch at the International Hotel and snacks are available from various concessions all day long. In fact, one

of Larsen’s favourite memories of the fair has to do with food.

A few years ago, she and a fellow volunteer were taking a quick break. Sitting by the gazebo, watching the crowds, they encountered a scene that made them realize what the fair was all about. “What we saw was a family, sitting on a blanket on the grass, having a picnic lunch and having a fun day.”

But of course, the fair is also about exhibiting the products of people’s hard work in the garden or the kitchen, with a needle or using a camera, paint brush and lots of creativity.

“It’s always nice for kids and adults as well to show their talent,” Larsen says.

There are dozens of categories people can enter, from the most unusual vegetable to best decorated giant

cookie, best antipasto, most impressive scrapbook, most stunning photograph and everything in between.

Over the years, one of the most popular categories, Larsen states, has been ‘Reduce, Reuse & Recycle’ where adults and children create new products – either useful or artistic – from recycled material. “It’s quite amazing what they think of and use garbage for,” she says.

Entry forms for the fair can still be dropped off before 5 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4, at Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet and Cranbrook Photo in Cranbrook as well as Top Crop Too in Kimberley.

All the organizers of the Kootenay Country Fair are volunteers, so any money raised goes right back into paying for entertainment and other expenses. “We also give a bursary of $1,000 to a graduating student from Cranbrook each year and one to a Kimberley student,” said Larsen.

Stock analysts don’t run companies

Public companies (those traded on a stock exchange) are actually controlled by “independent” stock analysts.

These analysts spend their time (magically) deciding if a public company is growing fast enough, selling enough and increasing its share value enough.

If “no”, the company gets hammered on the stock exchange and often changes its fundamental direction ... and cutting costs (employees) is usually Step One. The problem with this should be obvious: Stock analysts don’t run companies, and most of them never have. They don’t design things or make things or sell things to consumers. They don’t hire and fire employees, make plans for the future, or deal with the real-world wants, needs and complaints of customers.

But they absolutely control every move of every public company, including CP Rail.

This might not seem important to individuals who don’t personally “play” in the stock market, but guess what?

If you have an RRSP, then chances are you have money in a Mutual Fund, most of which are just “collective investments” in the stock market. You might even have an investment in CP Rail So think about it: It’s probably not CP Rail that has decided a reasonable profit isn’t good enough. It’s probably the stock analysts, and consequently the mutual

It takes truckers to truck Submitted

The Conference Board of Canada reported, this year, that the country could see a major shortage of for-hire truck drivers by 2020. It is predicted that a gap in supply and demand for the transportation of goods will create the need for at least 25,000 skilled and qualified drivers. Because the North American economy relies on the highway transportation of consumer goods, this industry shortage could be problematic in a broad sense. The good news is that employment opportunities are on the rise for drivers ready to haul goods where they need to go.

The Canadian Trucking Alliance has taken a leadership position on this economic problem and has commissioned a Blue Ribbon Task Force to report on the potential effects of the driver shortage and strategies to attract new drivers to the industry. The authors of the report are clear: “Drivers are the industry’s number one resource, the backbone of the industry. Without them there is no trucking industry.”

There are several things that can make for-hire truck driving a more attractive employment option for young drivers. One of them is improving driver quality of life, and another is promoting driving as a skilled trade. If drivers get more respect and better compensation for what they do, they are more likely to stay in the industry.

Similarly, by working to make driving schedules more flexible, with guaranteed rest time, and by limiting time wastage during freight turnovers, trucking carriers can help make driving a more sustainable employment prospect. Clearly, for anyone looking for a good trade to join, truck driving is the way to go.

Arnold Curtis Sutton Aug. 10, 1960-Aug. 24, 2013 Arnold Curtis Sutton was born in Prince George on August 10th 1960, and passed suddenly on August 24th 2013 at the age of 53. Arnie was a great father, a son, a brother, an uncle, a faithful, dependable partner and friend. He liked to live life simply, easily, and efficiently which was also the rule to his carpentry. He could often be found at Perry Creek where he was an honorary “Creeker”, taking on any and every project with his hammer, tool belt, tape measure, and a plan that could only be found in his head or on the inside of a cigarette pack. He was a wealth of knowledge and information or as some of us like to call it “Arnformation”.

He was known for his patience and kindness, a hard worker who paid attention to detail and went the extra mile even if it took twice as long because “if it’s worth building, it’s worth over building”. He will forever live on and be remembered in everything he built where he always left his special mark.

Arn is survived by his sons Paul Sutton, Chris Sutton, Fathers Don Sutton (Linda), Harry Klim, Brother Gord Sutton (Lorraine), partner Tracy McGinnis, friend Debi Hart and many very good friends.

He was predeceased by his mother Shirley Klim, brother Bill Sutton and good friend Don Grundy A celebration of life will be held on Saturday September 7, 2013 at the Moyie Community Hall at 1:00 pm.

It was evident to me and my family of just how wonderful it as to see the professionalism and personal emotional involvement being displayed, without concern for the sacrifice required, to attend to me in both the ICU and ward environments.

Though I was slated to be moved to Calgary, yet due to my declining condition was not able to be transported, I know I couldn’t have received better care than I did here.

Our main treating facility is located just north of Radium Hot Springs in the beautiful Columbia Valley in British Columbia. Brisco Wood Preservers’ second treating facility is located in Peers, Alberta. In addition to our pole manufacturing and treating, Brisco also produces laminated structural wood panels, beams and columns in our Brisco Manufacturing Ltd. laminating facility. Brisco sells treated posts, rails, plywood and lumber and we also custom treat a variety of wood products.

General Summary: Reporting to the Sales & Marketing Manager, the Pole Truck Operator is responsible for the safe operation of the truck, hauling throughout BC and Alberta as well as occasional hauls to Saskatchewan and the US. This position will be based out of the Brisco plant site, although overnight trips are required on a regular basis.

Key Responsibilities: • Hauling treated & untreated Poles from our Brisco or Peers plants to various locations in BC, AB, SK and the US. to customer’s yards and drop sites. Mostly highway and some off highway hauling.

• Performing proper safety checks and safe vehicle operation.

• Minor truck maintenance, servicing, cleaning and troubleshooting.

• Maintain truck logs according to Federal, provincial and company regulations.

Qualifications: • Valid class 1 drivers license.

• Clean driver’s abstract.

• Minimum 2 years experience operating Log Truck or Highway Truck.

• Ability to read maps and a working knowledge of local road systems.

• Background in the Forest Industry a definite asset.

• Self reliant, organized, motivated and quality oriented.

This is a full time position, which offers a competitive wage and comprehensive benefits package.
