Fair has entertainment for everyone One of the most popular features of the Salmon Arm Fair is the entertainment provided on two stages.

On the main stage near the food court, fairgoers can enjoy performances by local artists and contestants in the annual Shuswap Idol program that introduces new talent to two fair stages and community.

Or amble over to Memory Lane for a look back in time and another slate of excellent artists.

Longtime co-ordinator and producer Gil Risling says inviting local artists is a personal mandate.

“It’s a Salmon Arm fair and it gives local talent another opportunity to come onto a stage with professional sound,” he says.

“Why would we go somewhere else when we have such great talent here?”

Risling says the fair is where he found two of the musicians featured in the Risling’s extremely popular Louisiana Hayride musicians – bass player Mike Melnichuk and keyboardist William Brookfield.

Brookfield helped Risling with the sound at the fair for about four years before mentioning he played something other than a ukelele.

“The fourth year, he said, ‘do you mind if I bring my keyboard?’” laughs Risling. “After I heard him. I said ‘William, why didn’t you tell me?’”

In a reverse incident, Adam Fitzpatrick, who just took second place in the world Elvis Tribute competition in Memphis, joined the hayride and then accepted an invitation to perform at the fair – something he

says he is happy to be doing again this year.

Risling says he got his experience with managing shows by volunteering with the Roots and Blues Festival for several years.

“I put my Roots and Blues volunteering to good use,” he says.

“It’s interesting that I got my training at another successful Salmon Arm event.”

The main stage will be the scene of live entertainment from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7 and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday, Sept. 8.

The grand opening of the fair will be celebrated at the stage beginning at 6 p.m., with a special cake-cutting in honour of the Salmon Arm Fire Department, which is celebrating 100 years of service to the community.

Entertainment will be the order of the fair at Memory Lane too.

A variety of artists will perform from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Support the food bank

The Girl Guides are looking for food.

And Salmon Arm Fall Fair officials are asking members of the community help the guides gather non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army Food Bank at the parade that moves out at 10:45 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7.

All nonperishable food items will be appreciated; however, as always, there is a need for proteins’.

If you happen to forget your food item, spectators are also welcome to help give back by making a cash donation.

And if that doesn’t work, take some food to the fair where the food bank will be collecting items throughout the weekend.

Grant supports fall fair The Salmon Arm Fall Fair will be richer to the tune of $37,000 thanks to their share of $689,500 in provincial gaming grants.

The province is supporting annual celebrations of rural heritage and the bounty of the land, featuring great traditions such as livestock competitions, 4-H activities and red ribbon prizes for best jams, jellies and pies, As diverse as their host communities, agricultural

The Salmon Arm Legion patrol team will be in attendance to present the colours.

The stage will open after the welcoming ceremony with dancers and the Shuswap Idol competition.

The Salmon Arm Fair Book Picture design has a new twist this year. All the pictures in the competition will be displayed in the arena foyer, and the winner will be announced from the Peoples Choice award. Get your ballot from the fair office. The winner will have their photo featured in the 2014 fall fair book.

Kids nine and under can pick up entries for the scavenger hunt from gate attendants or the information booth on Fifth Avenue. New this year is the highly popular West Coast Lumberjack Show. This entertaining blend of skills, heroics, history and humour is sure to please young and old.

Last year Elvis tribute artist Adam Fitzpatrick attracted large, enthusiastic crowds for all his shows. Happily, Adam is returning this year with his ‘Evolution of Elvis’ performances.

The ever-popular Shuswap Idol program, highlighting local talent, will take place on the main stage over the course of the fair, along with other music and dance.

Lawn tractor racing will stir up some excitement over at the grandstand, and Saturday morning’s parade is fun for all, although especially appealing to those with a sweet tooth.

A variety of food and drink booths at the fairgrounds will keep everyone’s appetites satisfied.

Shooting Star Midway will again bring various rides and games of chance to thrill and delight fair goers.
