School Awards Program changing

STRANGE HEADGEAR

Beginning in September 2013, the Provincial Awards Program will be revised to provide school districts with greater flexibility and better align with the BC Education Plan.

The revisions will phase out the Passport to Education over the next three years. This change coincides with the B.C. Liberals government’s development of district/authority awards, where students will have more areas to qualify for post-secondary awards and scholarships.

These areas will better align with the goals of the BC Education Plan and allow more students to be recognized for their unique interests, such as trades, Aboriginal languages, volunteer activity or technology education.

Within these broad categories, school districts will have greater discretion to locally manage allocations, tailoring their decisions to the unique demographics of their community.

The Passport to Education Program will be phased out starting with Grade 10 in 2013, Grade 11 in 2014 and Grade 12 in 2015. Students who have already earned Passports to Education in their grades 10, 11 or 12 year will still receive their award.

No new passports will be awarded to incoming Grade 10 students.

The Passport to Education Program was outdated and administratively complex to deliver, according to the education ministry.

Additional work and consultations will occur over the coming year to further define the categories and award allocation process.

The Graduation Program Examination Scholarship, the Secondary School Apprenticeship, and the Pathway to Teacher Education Scholarship still will be offered.

100 Mile House shoppers have raised nearly $7,000 so far during Safeway’s Muscular Dystrophy Awareness Campaign, which runs annually throughout the month of August.

Donations go to the Safeway Mobility Grant Program, which helps individuals affected by neuromuscular disorders.

The 100 Mile House Safeway had a table set up to advertise the campaign Aug. 17-18. Local resident Tina Essler was there on behalf of Muscular Dystrophy Canada, accepting donations and distributing cake and coffee.

“Hopefully, everybody learns there are a lot of people out there with different muscle problems and they’re more attentive to them,” says Essler, who has been diagnosed with mitochondrial myopathy and Muscular Dystrophy.

“I know I’ve had issues even opening doors. I hope people pay attention to other people and what they need.”

The Safeway Mobility Grant Program helped Essler purchase a vehicle lift for her wheelchair a few years ago.

“I’ve seen some doctors and they’ve changed some medications to help me out. But I was stuck in my wheelchair and wasn’t able to go

“We’re definitely going to make it. We’ve had a strong response from the community.

Wranglers looking forward to big games

100 Mile House Wranglers Junior B Hockey Club president Tom Bachynski was all smiles after the Blue & White game that gave fans a look at the top 30 skaters and four goalies emerging from Main Camp on Aug. 20.

Noting attendance was just shy of 500 fans, Bachynski said it was a fantastic turnout for a prospects game.

“Just going around town the past couple of days, I’ve received positive comments from people who know hockey, saying they thought the talent for the prospect game was ‘outstanding’ for an expansion team.

“I’m feeling good about it. Now, we have a few things to get done to get ready for the season.”

In the past decade, more than $76 million has been raised by Safeway across North America, including $5.5 million from Canada, in support of families living with neuromuscular disorders, which affects more than 50,000 Canadians.

Rogers said he was also pleased with the intensity the prospects brought to the Blue & White game.

He notes there are 28 players in camp right now and he needs to pare that number down to 23 by the end of pre-season.

“We will likely add a few Junior A cuts, so we will likely need to reduce the current roster by seven or eight players.

Rogers adds the Wranglers will be in Williams Lake for a few practices as a result of the South Cariboo Community Fall Fair, Sept. 6-8.

The club’s pre-season schedule starts with a road trip to Kamloops against the Storm on Sept. 4, and then they travel to Princeton to take on the Posse on Sept. 7.

On Sept. 11, the Storm comes in to 100 Mile House for the third and final pre-sea-

son tilt for the Wranglers.

It will the local fans first look at the Wranglers in a game situation, Bachynski

said, adding it will be exciting because the “boys will be wearing their home jerseys and raring to put on a show for the hometown crowd.”

Noting the club is doing something special to commemorate the evening, he said the $20 tickets will include a souvenir T-shirt.

Fire danger rating ‘extreme’

The Cariboo Fire Centre/Wildfire Management Branch (CFC/WMB) would like to remind the public to remain vigilant with fire use, including campfires, despite cooler weather.

Grass fires are of concern at this time of the year due to natural drying, including frost curing in areas of high elevation, such as the Chilcotin, which allows grass to burn easier.

The overnight low recorded at Puntzi Mountain (elevation 2,985 feet/910 metres) on Aug. 27 was 1.1 C. Data from CFC/ WMB weather stations show that the fire danger rating is “extreme” for the following areas: Alexis Creek, Middle Lake, Puntzi Mountain, Riske Creek and Tatla Lake in the Chilcotin; Churn Creek; Knife Creek, south of Williams Lake; Lone Butte; and Young Lake, east of Clinton.

A fire danger rating of “extreme” means

“extremely dry forest fuels and the fire risk is very serious. New fires will start easily, spread rapidly and challenge fire suppression efforts.

General forest activities may be restricted, including open burning, industrial activities and campfires.”

Areas of “high” within the CFC are: Anahim Lake and Nemiah in the Chilcotin; Horsefly, Likely and Prairie Creek; Meadow Lake, west of 100 Mile House; and Nazko.

A fire danger rating of “high” means “forest fuels are very dry and the fire risk is serious.

New fires may start easily, burn vigorously and challenge fire suppression efforts. Extreme caution must be used in any forest activities. Open burning and industrial activities may be restricted.”

Both Quesnel and Williams Lake currently have a “moderate” fire danger rating. A fire danger rating of “moderate” means “forest fuels are drying and

there is an increased risk of surface fires starting. Carry out any forest activities with caution.”

On Aug. 18, the roar of motorcycles heralded the arrival of the riders of the Military Police National Motorcycle Relay Ride (MPNMRR) at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #260100 Mile House.

Due to work and personal commitments of some of the other potential riders, the group was smaller than expected, but no less enthusiastic and excited to be in 100 Mile House.

Today is day 1 of the British Columbia ride,” said George Robinson.

“We left Victoria this morning with a few stops on the way. We had a great ride.”

After a dinner hosted by the local Legion and an overnight stop, the eight riders were back on their bikes first thing Aug. 19 and off to

Valemount.

Robinson notes that there, they are off to Jasper, Alberta where they will meet up with five more of the national riders who will do the round trip to Victoria with them, a distance of 3,500 kilometres.

Riders from Alberta and the Northwest Territories will also rendezvous in Jasper with the team before returning to their respective homes.

“Yeah, it’s a long drive just to say ‘hi’,” jokes Robinson.

“We will have a supply vehicle with us, and sometimes that helps generate donations. People will stop and chat, see what we’re about.”

Last year in B.C. alone, the MPNMRR raised $27,000.

Wildfire personnel deployed to Montana More British Columbia firefighting personnel and resources will be deployed out of province last week to help folks in Leavenworth, Washington deal with an increase in wildfire activity.

One helicopter (with logistical support), a helicopter operations technician, two rapattack crews, two unit crews from the Southeast Fire Centre and Cariboo Fire Centre, including the Stormriders Unit Crew 100 Mile House, and one agency representative.

In addition, 23 parattack crew members and an agency representative will be sent to Missoula, Montana.

These missions follow closely behind the most recent deployment of firefighting personnel and resources to Idaho, announced on Aug. 21. Previous deployments this season saw B.C. firefighters head to Alberta, Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Quebec and Alaska.

The recent decrease in wildfire activity in B.C. makes it possible to share resources with other jurisdictions. The recently deployed crews will be out of province for up to 19 days, but they can be recalled at any time if B.C.’s wildfire situation changes.

Sufficient personnel have been retained to manage current firefighting needs.

The request for assistance was made through the Northwest Compact, which coordinates the mutual sharing of firefighting resources between jurisdictions in Western Canada and the northwestern United States.

The parattack crews were requested through the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.

Several drivers reportedly heeded the advice of Wayne Fox of Lac la Hache, who set himself up at Highway 97 in front of a local gas station with a placard on Aug. 23. His sign advised motorists to skip fuelling up in 100 Mile House and continue on to Williams Lake instead, where gas prices were eight cents a litre cheaper.

Watch for and reduce your childs back-to-school anxiety

Back-to-school can trigger anxiety and stress in some children, but there are steps parents and caregivers can take to help.

“The start of the school year can be a really positive time, full of new opportunities for young people, but it can also be overwhelming for some,” says Dr. Connie Coniglio, BC Mental Health & Addiction Services.

“If your children are not looking forward to school, they may be experiencing stress or anxiety.

While some children and youth thrive on the back-to-school excitement, others may need a calming, reassuring environment to support them during this transition.”

Anxiety – feeling worried, nervous or fearful – is normal from time to time in adults and children, Coniglio notes.

It’s a problem if your children seem to be anxious often when other children of the same age are typically not, she says, adding it negatively affects their functioning and/or your family life if it doesn’t get better over time.

Signs and symptoms • Attempts to remain at home or with caregiver.

• Refusal to attend school on certain days (field trips).

• Refusal to eat in public.

• Refusal to use pub-

lic bathrooms.

• Extreme shyness, avoiding social situations or events.

• Tantrums, crying, screaming.

• Constant worrying.

• Physical complaints with no medical explanation (stomach aches, headaches, difficulty catching breath).

• Seeking comfort/ reassurance.

Care-giving tips • Provide regular routines – morning, school, homework and bedtime.

• Provide clear expectations, limits and consequences.

• Plan for transitions – getting to school and returning to school

after breaks.

• Help your child identify his or her feelings – nervous, intimidated and shy.

• Pay attention to your child’s feelings.

• Ask your children if they have ideas or solutions for a particular concern.

• Show yourself identifying your own feelings, problem solving and being brave.

• Remain calm when your child is anxious.

• Hold realistic expectations that are right for child’s age.

• Praise and reward even their small accomplishments.

Internet chat-room sessions available for cancer patients across Canada

By Jennifer Raifteiri-McArdle The BC Cancer Agency has entered the chat room arena by providing free virtual support groups to help connect cancer patients facing geographical and emotional barriers across Canada.

Originally a research program in 2010, CancerChatCanada’s overwhelming success led to it becoming an integrated Canada-wide service.

Based in Vancouver with more than 700 users across Canada, the program uses live, text-based chat facilitated by health-care professionals, says program director and principal investigator Dr. Joanne Stephen, a clinician scientist with

the BC Cancer Agency Psychosocial Oncology program.

“We were surprised to learn people often liked the chat room more than face to face.”

More than 100 people were interviewed after the pilot program and noted that with the convenience, privacy, safety and comfort of remaining at home, they felt they could talk much more freely.

The site is extremely secure, Stephen adds.

“The sites have the same level of security as the banks.”

Chat room user Jim Lennox says no subject was left unturned.

There is a certain degree of anonymity with a keyboard. It was a godsend.”

Stephen explains

“There is tech support and we make sure patients have access to a computer with Internet, are familiar with e-mail and have some typing skills. When a group of six to 10 patients is available, we set up a chat room and they log in for a private chat.”

She adds only first names are used and

participants know there is a facilitator.

Groups have 9- minute meetings scheduled weekly for 10-12 weeks.

Participants are welcome to join another group if they are still feeling overwhelmed after the session ends, Stephen says, adding many people connect with fellow chat room participants on their own.
