Campbell River seniors finally have a home.

It may be temporary but it’s a home nonetheless for the nearly 600 seniors left with no fixed address since having to vacate the Campbell River Common Mall.

Council on Tuesday voted to allow the seniors centre society use of both the Sportsplex and the Community Centre, rent-free, weekdays during the day.

Council approved the

move from September up until the end of this year.

The four month period equates to $19,000 in value but Ross Milnthorp, the city’s parks, recreation and culture manager, said it’s unlikely the city would have seen all of that money even if the seniors weren’t there.

“It’s very difficult to predict with any certainty if any percentage of those times would be rented to other customers between now and Dec. 31,” Milnthorp told council. “Because we are already nearing Septem-

ber, I would say there is not a strong likelihood that a significant percentage of those times would be rented.”

Coun. Claire Moglove wanted to keep the rent-free period at three months after hearing from city staff that one year would see the city potentially forfeit $76,000 – reducing the city’s surplus.

Moglove recommended the Seniors Society apply for a grantin-aid for 2014.

“It would be my hope that the seniors

would continue at the Sportsplex and or the Community Centre in 2014,” she said.

Moglove also addressed the issue of setting a precedent by giving one community group rentfree access while other seniors groups, including the 50+ Living program have 25 per cent of their costs covered by taxpayers.

But Moglove said she believes this is a different situation.

“I think there is a caution in our report that this might set a prec-

edent, however, because the Senior Society is working with the city to merge the two programs (city seniors programs) and we’re looking forward to a partnership; I think that puts this is in a different category,” Moglove said.

“And I think the seniors have worked diligently and I do applaud their efforts.”

The Seniors Centre Society operated rentfree out of Campbell River Common Mall from July 1, 2010 up until May of this year.

“The other part of the Community Charter, under the responsibilities of the mayor, where it says the mayor is to reflect the will of council, do you also believe that’s undemocratic?”

Jakeway replied, no, he thought that was consistent.

But again Adams questioned why the mayor

was not reflecting the will of council by speaking out against council’s decision in the media.

Jakeway fired back that he never said anything after the council meeting.

“I only spoke in council,” Jakeway said. “The media was quoting exactly what I said in council and in council I’m allowed to say my opinion. I believe I posted the media report online and discussed it

online. I can talk in social media all I want.”

Which prompted Adams to question Jakeway again, “And is that expressing the will of council?”

Jakeway got the last word in: “No, that’s expressing my opinion.”

While it’s been awhile since Jakeway has been called out by council it’s not the first time a councillor has questioned the mayor’s loyalty.

Moglove told the Mirror she was disappointed in Jakeway for urging the public to fight back against a tax revolt after council approved a 13 per cent residential tax increase, that was approved by council, much to Jakeway’s dismay.

“The will of council was reflected in (the) vote on the budget. Once council has made a decision, it is the mayor’s duty and responsibility to speak in

support of that majority decision,” Moglove said at the time. “That is one of the hallmarks of being mayor. The mayor is the spokesperson for council and as such, the comments attributed to him are very disappointing.”

No, I’m not talking about students, I’m talking about the adults because many of the traffic problems found in school zones are caused by parents driving their children to school. Even the occasional teacher might bend the rules if they are late for work.

We all know that school zones are in effect on regular school days. Until recently, these days were determined at the provincial level and were uniform across BC. Today the school calendar is determined by each school district, so there could actually be a difference from one district to another. For safety’s sake, it’s probably best to slow to the posted 30 km/h limit throughout the school year unless it is a statutory holiday.

Let’s change the viewpoint from go to stop now. Parking around schools may create it’s own hazards by limiting visibility and proper movement. You probably don’t need me to remind you that children act on the spur of the moment without thinking their actions through. This makes them a significant hazard as they pop up in unexpected and inappropriate places. You increase the problem when you park or drive in places that you are not supposed to. Confusion is a bad thing in traffic.

I’ve investigated child pedestrian deaths and I can assure you that it is not something you want to be involved in, even remotely. Take a few seconds extra around school zones. It won’t cost you much more out of your day, in fact, the savings could be substantial.

Site work to prepare for the new $266 million, 95-bed Campbell River Hospital will lead to some traffic disruption around the existing Campbell River Hospital entrance on 2nd Avenue in the days ahead.

The regular exit from the 2nd Avenue main entrance parking lots will be closed to traffic from Tuesday, September 3rd to Saturday, September 7th.

During this period, motorists will be required to enter and exit the parking lots from the regular entrance. Traffic control flag persons will be on hand to assist.

This work may lead to brief delays entering and exiting the main entrance parking lot. Please take this into account and allow additional time for your hospital visit.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

This work is related to construction of a new temporary Ambulance Access Route to the existing hospital Emergency Department entrance. Residents raise a stink, get council to close smelly sani-station Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

The 17th Avenue sanistation will be permanently shut down this fall.

Council voted to close the facility after complaints from several Campbellton residents about the foul odours emanating from the sanistation.

Coun. Ron Kerr said while he sees the benefit in the service, it’s at the expense of residents.

“I have used it, it’s convenient. But there are other options,” Kerr said.

“I think we’ve heard from

the community and they want it shut down.”

Mayor Walter Jakeway agreed the sani-station is not in a suitable location.

“I can see why the neighbours would like it shut down but I think it needs to be replaced,” Jakeway said. “I’d like to see it at the airport.

“I’m in favour of shutting it down but I think we seriously need to look at putting one at the airport or some other location.”

The residential location of the sani-station has been a sore point for resident Christine O’Connor for years.

She wrote five letters over the last six years to council asking for some help.

O’Connor said the smell coming from the station was so bad that some days she couldn’t go outside.

“I still can’t have a barbecue on my porch without the putrid smell of fecal matter rolling through the hot summer air,” O’Connor wrote in a letter to council. “Every Sunday during the summer the traffic is backed up down the street and a constant rolling of RVs and buses continuously dump their refuse right

in front of my home.”

T h e C amp b e l lt on Neighbourhood Association wrote a letter to council, which was on Tuesday night’s agenda, supporting O’Connor. A petition with 100 signatures was also presented to council.

City staff recommended council decommission the station.

“To try and keep this going in a residential area, I’m not sure we’re going to be able to contain the smell,” said City Manager Andy Laidlaw, adding that it “leads staff to the view that it is time to shut this system

Jennifer Peters, the city’s utilities manager, said there have been problems with sewage spills from RV users dumping their waste, blockages, and a lack of available water.

Peters said there’s also been evidence of commercial and non-RV use and prohibited waste being discharged at the station. She said that’s

likely due to the fact the station is unsupervised.

To improve service, including adding supervision, would cost the city $10,000 per year.

To make improvements would cost $30,000 and to relocate the sani-dump would cost $50,000. The cost to shut down the facility will be $3,000 – the same amount it costs the city in annual maintenance.

While council approved the shut down, Coun. Mary Storry was not on board and was the lone vote opposed.

“I’m almost feeling like I have a conflict of interest on this one because we use the sani-station so often and it’s wellused by the community,” Storry said. “I just hate to cut a service that has been enjoyed by the community for so long.”

Vancouver-style civic politics saw the NPA, Vision, COPE and the Green Party collectively spent $5.2 million in the 2011 elections.

Vancouver’s major municipal parties spent more than $15 for each vote they got.

Hypocritical Wi-Fi decision OK. Now I’m really confused.

The city has denied Telus the opportunity to place a cell phone tower in Willow Point park. I have been told by the mayor and at least two councillors that their decision was based solely on the 120-name petition against the proposal based on the perceived problems of RF emissions.

Apparently not one person spoke up favouring the proposal, yet I know phone usage continues to be a major problem in central Campbell River.

The other reason was the objection by another councillor over the prospect of commercializing city property, in this case a park.

I see now that they think it’s a great idea to allow Shaw to place 92 different Wi-Fi access points throughout the city using city infrastructure and accepted a $18,400 fee for allowing it. Green leader supports the cops and Lindsey’s Law

Last Sunday I helped out a friend who’s fundraising for the upcoming Cops For Cancer Tour de Rock ride.

There we were, last Sunday in Sidney, during the town’s show ‘n’ shine on the main drag, when I was surprised by another volunteer hawking tickets with us under the shade of the RCMP tent.

She wore no emerald-coloured hemp T-shirt, didn’t hand out party pamphlets or buttons, and there wasn’t a CSIS security detail in sight, yet here was a federal party leader: Elizabeth May, the first member of Canada’s Green Party to be elected to Parliament for Saanich-Gulf Islands.

She’s also a Sidney resident and was just out doing her part to support a great cause and to be seen. Nice lady, smart, funny too.

We chatted during lulls in the sales, but rather than environmental issues, the former lawyer chose to talk about a law and order issue that starts with a 20-year-old missing persons case.

On the August long weekend in 1993, 14-year-old Lindsey Nicholls went for a walk along a road in Cumberland and was never seen again.

Her mother, Judy Peterson of Sidney, continues to look for answers as an online public petition asking Parliament to adopt what is affectionately called “Lindsey’s Law.” In short, Lindsey’s Law, would allow investigators to compare DNA evidence of missing persons with the DNA collected from crime scenes and unidentified human remains.

The hope is this law would result in

finding solutions to old mysteries and crimes, and perhaps even convict a murderer. Seems a like a sensible thing to do and even practical with today’s technology, but it’s still not on the government’s agenda.

According to May, former Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said the proposed legislation would be too expensive.

Really, how expensive can it be?

It’s not like it will take a billion dollars, like the gun registry, to create something new. We have the DNA of missing people and we have DNA from umpteen crime sites and thousands of criminals.

If the government needs cash to fund the program, it should take a look at how it currently collects DNA from convicted criminals.

As the saying goes, five per cent of the

people commit 95 per cent of the crime, so these folks come and go from the courts as if stuck in a revolving door.

And as each case goes, prosecutors ask over and over again for DNA samples.

In short, one thief with a long record could very well provide a dozen DNA samples to the national police registry.

Just a “little” redundant and who knows what happens with all this repeat data? It sounds like a lot of wasted money – tax dollars that could be better spent on another investigative tool that would help solve cold cases.

And it’s a law that could help provide closure and comfort to the families of the more than 7,000 missing Canadians.

Some of whom, I imagine, are voters.

Why are we rushing ahead with this spread of microwave radiation?

How much is too much? I am asking this question in regards to the proposed placement of 92 or more Wi-Fi access points in Campbell River to accommodate Shaw’s Go Wi-Fi Service.

We don’t know at this point what level of microwave radiation is safe. With this uncertainty, why are we rushing ahead to spread microwave radiating technology throughout

our city and parks. Why do we consider allowing this at a time when communities and countries in Europe ban Wi-Fi in schools, libraries, and public places.

And closer to home, Nanaimo turned down Shaw’s Go Wi-Fi Service in its June 17 council ceeting. I want to encourage you to watch the delegation presentation on the webcam at 6:17 p.m. on the agenda

of that meeting.

Microwave radiation has been shown to have adverse biological effects at levels well below Health Canada’s inadequate Safety Code 6.

Switzerland’s safety limit for exposure to microwave radiation is 100 times less that of Canada, so is that of China and Italy. There are many other places with even lower limits. When all those governments are

concerned, why are we not?

One Wi-Fi device might seem insignificant.

Let’s add up the exposure at the end of the day after hours in schools, universities, libraries, municipal buildings, hospitals, doctors offices and in places of employment.

After the additional Wi-Fi pollution, add to that a walk along the water or a picnic in a park. Please don’t forget,

that many people did not consent to this unprecedented experiment on humanity and environment which increases the wireless industry’s revenue and ability to collect data about our every move.

Since we don’t know how long it will take to turn biological effects into illnesses, our local government must provide safe places for those in the community who

want to exercise caution.

There must be areas free of Wi-Fi for all those with medical conditions that require avoidance of this radiation.

The Canadian Food In s p e c t i on Ag e n c y requires food labelling such that we know what it is we consume, that we can make our own choices and avoid allergic reactions. Where are the signs “Warning Wi-Fi Zone”?

Wi-Fi in a person’s home is a choice and it can be turned off when not in use. Wi-Fi in public places does not give anyone a choice.

To allow the spread of 92 or more hot spots without consent into the space we live in and pay taxes for - Mayor Jakeway and Councillors, with all due respect - that is too much.

To summarize: Apparently it’s now OK to use city infrastructure and accept a fee from Shaw to provide this service, and all of a sudden RF emissions are not a problem.

Let’s carry this a little farther.

The large tower on Dogwood at Merecroft is owned by the North Island 911 Corporation.

It’s on city property and was placed to allow the city to contract fire dispatch to the 911 Corp for the North Island, from

our Campbell River fire department. No problem here as it’s a very necessary service.

However, it seems that other services are on that tower including at least two transmitters (different frequencies) for Rogers to provide cell phone service.

I’m sure they are paying either the city or 911 Corp. a fee for allow-

ing them to be there. So now the city is accepting remuneration from Shaw and Rogers, either directly or indirectly, so those companies can provide Wi-Fi and cellular services from city support structures. Telus was denied.

Seems a little hypocritical.

This tower is within 500 meters of the Chris-

tian School, two hockey rinks and a public swimming pool, Pinecrest Elementary and park, the Christian Life Children’s Centre, Robron field and a major shopping centre.

Oh, let’s not forget the forestry staff, the city workers and the RCMP staff. Where was the public consultation process when all this was allowed?

Building beds for salmon on the Campbell Paul Rudan CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

It looks like a big comfy bed…if you’re a salmon.

For those on two feet hiking the Canyon View Trail, the new spawning bed is easy to spot on the south side of the Campbell River, just down from the John Hart Generating Station.

The deeper parts of the river are dark, but the spawning gravel is a distinct light brown that appears ideal for those big Tyees nestling in to lay their eggs.

Buchanan is referring to his buddy, and past foundation chairman, Mike Gage, who caught a 61.5-pound chinook in the famous Tyee Pool (located near the mouth of the river) earlier this month. The chinook are starting to return in greater numbers to the Campbell – there’s tons of pinks running now too – and part of the reason is the work done by the foundation to build more spawning beds.

“With the dam, there’s no recruitment of gravel,” Buchanan explains.

Just recently, the foundation completed its recent spawning bed at an estimated cost of $170,000-$180,000. It’s a hefty cost for 42,000 tonnes of gravel, equipment and labour, and the project was supported by a grant from Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Buchanan assured the MP they would be applying for funding and are considering a project on the upper Quinsam River. There’s a falls just below Quinsam River that is tough to get over for migrating coho salmon and steelhead heading to spawning grounds. Building steps into a portion of the falls would give these two species a better chance to reach spawning grounds.

Campbell River man nailed in New Canyon View half-million-dollar drug bust trail route opens at Kamloops bus depot

Police in the Alberta capital seized 28 kilograms of cocaine they estimated to have a street value of $2.5 million, which works

Based on that calculation, the three kilograms of cocaine seized at the Kamloops bus depot on the weekend has a street value of about $267,000.

Recent data from Canadian police forces pegs the street value of heroin at about $100,000 a kilogram, which would mean the heroin seized in Kamloops has a value of about $200,000.

BC Hydro provided funding for the new trail and will decommission it once construction is complete in 2018.

Council decides impounding dogs three days not enough Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Council rejected one of the changes to the city’s animal control bylaw that city staff recommended following complaints from several residents.

The changes became necessary following a review of the city’s original bylaw as it was being handed over to Coastal Animal Control.

City Clerk Peter Wipper said that “during the process of review-

ing these new contracts, it became apparent that the city’s animal control bylaw was out of date.”

The changes include shortening the amount of time Coastal Animal Control is required to keep an impounded ani-

mal, clarifying that only one barking complaint has to be received to prompt the animal control officer to follow up with a dog’s owner, as well designating an animal control officer with the ability to designate a

dog as vicious.

The changes, which had received first three readings were up for adoption at Tuesday night’s council meeting, but not all of them were welcomed by the public.

the time required to keep an impounded animal from five days to three, as Wipper said “almost all impounded dogs are picked up within one to two days.”

But Adams questioned the need to reduce the time animals should be held and made a motion to keep the impoundment period at five days, which was approved by council.

“It (the draft bylaw) doesn’t define whether it’s business days or calendar days and I think there are times when three days could be an issue,” Adams said. “I’ve carefully read through the e-mails and a lot of the comments made are covered in the bylaw here; this is the one that jumped out at me.”

According to Jakeway, most of the e-mails urged council to hold off on passing the changes to the bylaw.

“Over the weekend I’ve received probably four e-mails and you could tell by the way they were written it was organized to try and delay our approval here tonight,” Jakeway said. “My belief is, in local government people get a voice and if we rush things through, especially when it’s not urgent, we’re denying that chance to speak; so I think we need a delay.”

Coun. Larry Samson agreed that more public input is needed before going ahead with the bylaw.

“I have some concerns about this bylaw. I’d like to see that we get some more public feedback,” Samson said. “We passed first three readings in one meeting and I don’t think the public has had adequate time to look at it and it’s over summer holidays to boot. I’d like to defer the bylaw until late September to give the public a chance to digest it and give us a chance to get some feedback from the public.”

Council in the end did not vote in favour of holding off on the bylaw, but passed the bylaw with the amendment to keep the impoundment period at five days.

The Campbell River Festival of Films will launch its 2013 season in partnership with the Tidemark Theatre and the Toronto International Film Circuit.

The film festival will present its unique program of films and shorts on Tuesdays, Sept. 24, Oct. 8, Oct. 22, Nov. 12 and Nov. 19 at 7 p.m.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

The 2013 season’s passes will go on Sept.

14 at the Tidemark Theatre ticket office and on-line at tidemarktheatre.com. The passes will sell for $45 and entitle the holder to five wonderful films plus a series of shorts and draws at each screening.

Individual tickets may be purchased at the door for $12 each.

The directors of the festival hope that by creating this partnership with the larger Tidemark Theatre venue more people will be able to enjoy the unique films and enjoy the wonderful ambiance of the Tidemark as well.

The doors open at 6:30 p.m. with movies starting at 7 p.m. Patrons can gather in the lobby before and after the

movie for a glass of wine and an opportunity to discuss the movie of the night with friends and other moviegoers.

The festival is a successful partnership that was established 15 years ago with the Toronto International Film Festival film circuit. The partnership allows the Campbell River group to book films and shorts directly from Toronto that would not normally make their way to our Campbell River movie theatres.

This fall season begins with The Sapphires on Sept. 24 followed by Blackfish on Oct. 8.

Amour will be featured on Oct. 22 with The Angel’s Share playing on Nov. 12. The season finale will be on Nov. 19 and that title will be Twenty Feet From Stardom.

The organizers want everyone to know that all the proceeds go directly back to the community. Each year, bursaries and camera equipment are given out to local students and schools. In previous years, the festival has also put on bonus screenings that have helped to raise thou-

sands of dollars to support various worthwhile programs in Campbell River.

Council delays 11th Avenue name change to Veteran’s Way Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR

Council wants to confirm the Legion’s support before changing the name of a portion of 11th Avenue.

Council is considering re-naming the section of 11th Avenue between Cedar Street and Shoppers Row to Veteran’s Way to honour our war vets.

The street was chosen because of its proximity to the Royal Canadian Legion and the cenotaph in Spirit Square.

But before jumping in, Coun. Andy Adams first wanted to make sure the legion was okay with the changes. The legion is one of two businesses – Uptown Willie’s and Britches and Hose Vintage Clothing – as well

Adams asked at Tuesday’s council meeting.

Mayor Walter Jakeway responded that he has talked to several of the members and they’re on board with the name change.

“I know there’s been discussions that they’d like to organize a ceremony when we do it and they’d like to do it early in the week of Remembrance Day,” Jakeway said.

But Adams wanted official confirmation.

“I understand Your Worship there’s a lot of discussion around the

coffee table…I’m just wondering what the position of the legion executive and the ladies’ auxiliary executive is and do we know it,” Adams said.

Ron Neufeld, the city’s manager of operations, said he believed the city had made contact but couldn’t say with 100 per cent certainty that the city had received the legion’s support.

“I can’t give you a definitive answer at this point, but we can get an answer if council wants to defer,” Neufeld said.

Council voted unanimously to hold off.

“While I’m supportive of the initiative, I’m going to move deferral pending confirmation of endorsement from the Campbell River Legion,” Adams said.

A Look Back

THE HISTORY OF THE CAMPBELL RIVER AREA

Above Tide a home for heritage and community

occupies the house in fall and winter. On World Rivers Day (Sept. 29), the property hosts the Haig-Brown Festival, a celebration of conservation and the river. In summer months the house is operated as a Bed and Breakfast, and interpretive tours of the house and property are available through the Museum.

A

lthough the history of the Haig-Brown family has been widely covered, what is actually known about their home, that they named Above Tide?

The Haig-Brown Heritage House as we know it today was originally owned by Herbert Pidcock, who built the first version of house in the early 1920s. Pidcock had obtained the idyllic property, situated on the Campbell River, from one of the area’s early pioneers, Fred Nunns.

When the Haig-Browns moved to Campbell River in 1934, they lived on the property, renting Reg Pidcock’s house that was next door to Herbert’s. Herbert’s house came up for sale two years later, and the Haig-Browns, who had come to love the area, decided to purchase it. Renovations began immediately, with an upper level bedroom being added on for their eldest daughter, Valerie.

By 1940 the house was wired for electricity, and Roderick commented that the lights were “a very real pleasure – a much greater improvement than I had anticipated.” The young couple had ambitious plans and by 1946, decided to build a study, add a dormer, a new entrance and front hall and to expand the kitchen. Due to various setbacks including a lack of money, supplies and help and a major earthquake in June of that year, the major

renovations were not completed until 1947.

After Ann Haig-Brown passed away in 1990, care of the house passed to the provincial Heritage Branch. By this time the house needed work and between 1994 and 2003, it was fully restored to reflect the period that Roderick and Ann occupied the house together – the years 1936-1976 – although some imperfections in the building were left intact as they contributed to the historic character of the home.

Mary Haig-Brown writes of the house: “Seeing it so well preserved and yet so human is wonderful…Knowing how it functions within the town makes it alive and vibrant to us.”

In 2006, the Museum at Campbell River took over management of the house

and grounds for the City of Campbell River. As an extension of museum programming,

and keeping in the spirit of the Haig-Brown family philosophy, a Writer in Residence

The Haig-Brown Heritage House sits on the banks of the Campbell River. Operated by the Museum at Campbell River, it preserves the legacy of Ann and Roderick Haig-Brown who moved into it in 1934 when it looked much like the bottom picture from the 1930s before undergoing expansion by the Haig-Browns and then renovation by the provincial Heritage Branch.

On August 24, 2013, we lost a beloved husband, father and grandfather. Keith is survived by his wife of 58 years, Barbara Johnston (Davis), sons; Ken (Tammy), Brian (Nancy), Fred (Sheri) Johnston, daughter Shannon (Brian) Langford. Nine granchildren: Trevor, Jillian, Spencer, Tanille, Dylan, Blake, Kristofer, Jordan and Nicole, sister Kathleen MacDowell and many nephews, nieces, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Keith was predeceased by his father Lawrence(Lorn), mother Gladys, brother Dean Johnston and sister Donna (Crandon).

Keith enjoyed his life, filling it with smiles, laughter and music; always ready to make a joke and generous with a helping hand for all. Keith worked hard and played hard but always had a smile.

Keith was born in Maymont, Sakatchewan, coming with his family to live in Duncan, B.C. in 1937. He married and lived in Chemainus, B.C.; moving his family to Campbell River, B.C. in 1965. Keith loved fishing; woodworking was his hobby after retirement and camping with his famiy and friends.

Keith was in the logging industry (Keith Johnston Ent. Ltd.), convenience store (Nite Time News) and owned Lucky Louise Boat Rentals.

Keith was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge, C.R. Shrine Club and Go-Kart Section. A member of Chas-Marie Chapter No. 76 and past Guardian of Job's Daughters. A forty-six year member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #3097 and member of Saint Peter's Anglican Church.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Saint Peter's Anglican Church, 228 S. Dogwood St., Campbell River, B.C. Tea following at the Masonic Lodge.

Flowers gratefully declined in lieu of donations to B.C. Children's Hospital for Cancer, Vancouver, B.C.

The family of Moyra Kirkland (nee Manning) is sad to announce her passing. Moyra was predeceased by her husband and love of her life, Stanley William (1995).

She is survived by her children: Sue (Martin), Jim, Pat, Rob (Beth). She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, nine greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Moyra was one of the few babies born in Anyox, B.C. as was her husband Stan.

She was a member of the Native Daughters organization.

Ben was a commercial fisherman for the Canadian Fishing Co. for over 70 years. He retired at the age of 92.

University of Victoria where she rows for the women’s 8s with coxswain team.

On Aug. 16, at Sherbrooke, Quebec, Legare fulfilled her pre-Games wish of breaking Ontar-

io’s long winning streak in the 8s event, when the B.C. team won gold in convincing fashion.

The UVic girls rowed to victory in a time of 6:12.03 while Team Ontario was more than

two minutes behind with a time of 6:14.99.

Quebec took the bronze in 6:23.41.

According to Legare’s bio on the Team BC website, this is just her second year rowing.

Growing up in Campbell River, she was an avid volleyball player, playing for the Crush and her high school team.

She graduated from Carihi in 2011.

The Hurricanes Female Hockey Program is having a golf tournament to raise funds to allow the players to attend female hockey tournaments.

Parent Dawn Martynk was looking for a way that all of the Hurricane teams could do a fun

event and do some fundraising for this year’s program all at once.

What she came up with was the First Annual Hurricanes Fun GolfTournament – a day of golf to be held Saturday, September 14.

Tickets will be sold

ahead of time to allow for planning for the team selections.

Martynk has been working with the new owners of the Saratoga Golf Club to put together what the Hurricanes hope will be an annual event.

There will be 72 tickets sold for the golf tournament and the format will be a four-person scramble with a shot gun start.

Registration will start at 2 p.m. with a shotgun start at 3 p.m. Dinner and prizes will follow the game at 6:30 p.m.

There will also be a raffle and silent auction as part of the event. Tickets are $65 per person for golf and dinner and $20 for just dinner.

The Campbell River Salmon Kings finished off an outstanding season with great results at the 2013 Provincials in Coquitlam.

Jamilya Wellard completed an amazing season with a third place finish in the 50 Breast. Welllard also had strong results in 100 IM (7th), 50 Fly (12th) and just missed the podium with a seventh place finish in 50 Free.

Olivia Carter finished with a 12th in 100 Fly, seventh in 200 IM, fitth in 100 Breast and seventh in 100 Free.

Jennifer Miller competed in the 200 IM (14th), 100 Fly (12th), 50 Fly (9th), and 100 Free (16th).

Kate-Lynn Revoy competed hard and was 15th in 50 Fly. Kurtis Scriba finished up a very strong season with a 19th place finish in 50 Fly. Owen Wellard completed his season with a 22nd place finish in 200 IM, a 22nd Place in 50 Free and a 13th place in 50 Fly. Brooke Wenger was competing in her first Provincials and placed 17th in 50 Fly and 21st in 50 Back. Summer Wenger placed strongly in her first Provincials with a 14th place in 50 Back and 19th in 100 IM. The Division 3 Medley Relay squad of Jamilya Wellard, Brooke Wenger, Jessica Revoy and Rowan Flood finished a strong fifth in their heat. The Division 3 Free Relay squad of Jamilya Wellard, Brooke Wenger, Janika Scriba, and Flood finished a very strong 12th place.

This was a great year for all Salmon Kings as many swimmers also made finals at Regionals and had best times throughout the season. The Salmon Kings summer season runs from May through August.

Message from the chair of the car show committee – Jim Johnson It’s our 21st annual “Show ‘n’ Shine”. We have a great day planned for the participants and spectators alike. We expect many new entries… an incredible line up of antiques, hot rods, muscle cars, race cars, sports cars and exotics… definitely something for everyone. Campbell River has an abundance of really cool cars, and often the only time we really get to see them is at this show.

Couple this with the participants who travel from far and wide to show there beautiful pieces of rolling art while experiencing our awesome scenery, and you have a weekend to remember.

Our feature vehicle this year is the “Rowdy Crowd Racing’s Nitro Harley”! Imaging going over 220mph (320 kph) in a quarter mile on two wheels! Their truck and hauler will also be on display. Maybe we’ll get the chance to hear some noise and smell some nitro! We also expect a “Junior Dragster”. We really want to encourage the younger crowd to participate, so a special “Young Guns” trophy will be awarded to an entry owned by someone under 30 years of age.

Our Saturday evening cruise was a hit last year, so we decided to extend it. See the details in this pullout. Set up your lawn chairs and watch the cars cruise by. Our participants love to cruise and it gives us a chance to show off our great city to our visitors.

Once again we had generous support from the local business community. The Downtown BIA has organized a shopping tour for our participants. Campbell River businesses also donate “door prizes” that are given to participants. The sponsor support allows us to present the “Reunion” show band at Spirit Square during our event. Room for parking all these neat machines is courtesy Tyee Plaza, City of Campbell River (for Shopper’s Row) and Spirit Square. Our “Top Pick” trophies are award to the “picks” of the sponsors, our members, and we have a “RCMP Pick”. We don’t judge… just pick cars we see as special in one way or another. We appreciate every entrant and “Thank You” for participating.

We’ll start at 7pm from the A&W at Discovery Harbour, but this year we’ll go north toward Painter’s Lodge, but turn on Discovery Drive, then to Orange Point Road, and head south on the Island Highway. We’ll take a left on 16th Ave, to Shoppers Row and continue south on 19A to Ericson. Then we take Nelson to Penfield, Holm to Galerno, and right on Oceanview. This leads us to Ash and Carnegie, then down South Murphy to 1st Ave, up to Alder and north back to Downtown.

Randy Carlson’s brainchild has continued. Thanks to Ralph Beaumont, we have incredible trophies again this year. Ralph created each one, including the wood bases and they are beautiful!

Highly polished “flathead” pistons and rods go to the “Top Pick” winners. The RCMP Pick, Long Distance, and Hard Luck trophies are truly art. Anyone winning one of these beauties will surely cherish it. It should be noted that the North Island Cruisers members do not compete for these trophies.

FROM THE GROUND UP This 1969 Camaro was purchased from a co-worker 12 years ago. The pictures show the transformation from a well worn white car to what it is now a finished (almost) vehicle.

It was stripped inside and out to bare metal then placed on a rotisserie to better access all sides of the car. The car was relatively rust free which is unusual for a 30 plus year old car. The only panel replaced was the door skin which wasn’t rusty but worn thin from previous body work. It was then coated with more modern products like epoxy primers then worked out from there.

While the body remains in stock form the running gear was extensively modified.

The engine has most of the internals replaced with tougher parts. The valve train is completely rollerized then the short block is topped off with aluminum heads, AIR-Gap intake, and the carburetor has been replaced with F.A.S.T. fuel injection. The accessory drive kit is a late model GM serpentine system.

MSD ignition puts things in to motion. The transmission is a 700R4 overdrive unit and the later model 8.5” corporate rear end contains 3.42 gears, Auburn posi. and Moser axles. The car rides on 17” Foose Legend wheels and Nitto 555 tires.

The whole interior was covered with a sound deadener (Dynamat). The interior is all new, original black carpet, upholstery and headliner.

Auto Meter gauges are fitted to the stock console and the shifter adapted to control the 4 speed automatic.

Music is supplied through a Custom Auto Sound 630NA unit and Kenwood speakers. The body work and initial prep was done at home. Special thanks to Henry and #1 Autobody for the final blocking and application of the water borne 2012 GM “Ashen Grey” paint and clear coat.

Plans for this Winter include installation of new front bolstered seat foams with stock appearing covers and 4 wheel Wilwood disc brakes.
