Back to school road safety

Thousands of B.C. children are injured every year With less than a week to go until school returns, ICBC is asking parents to begin preparing children for getting to and from school safely. Every year in B.C., an average of 30 children aged five to 18 are killed and 5,100 injured in 14,700 crashes. “As children across the province return to school in a couple of weeks, it’s the ideal time for parents to review the rules of the road with their children and take the time to go over their daily route with them,” said Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “Everyone should plan ahead for the return of the school season because the roads will be much busier, so remember to leave earlier to avoid rushing, stay focused on the road and use extra caution, especially around school zones.” “Police across the province will be closely monitoring speeds in school zones to make sure drivers stick to the 30-km/h speed limit,” said Chief Constable Jamie Graham, Chair of the B.C. Association of Chiefs of Police Traffic Safety Committee. “We want children to get a safe start to the school year so we’re asking drivers to be extra careful on our roads and watch for children.” “The start of the school year is a busy time for children and a return back to regular routines for parents,” said John Dickinson, ICBC’s director of road safety. “That’s why we’re encouraging parents to start talking to their children now about using extra caution when the school season begins. Even older children should

be reminded to remove earbuds and headphones when walking and always make eye contact with drivers.” Here are ICBC’s tips for drivers, parents and students to help everyone stay safe as school returns: Tips for drivers When school is back in session, don’t forget that every school day, unless otherwise posted, a 30 km/h speed limit is in effect in school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. When you’re dropping off your children in school zones, stop and allow them to exit the car on the side closest to the sidewalk. Never allow a child to cross mid-block. If a vehicle is stopped in front of you or in the lane next to you, they may be yielding to a pedestrian, so be prepared to stop. Always yield to pedestrians – it’s the law. School buses will be back on our roads. Vehicles approaching from both directions must stop for school buses when their lights are flashing. Before getting into your vehicle, make a habit of walking around your vehicle

to make sure no small children are behind it. Always look for pedestrians when you’re backing up. Tips for parents and students: Post these safety tips in your home and review them with your children – even older children need to be reminded about road

safety. Remove your headphones and put away your phone or other gadgets when crossing the street. Focus on the road so you can see, hear and respond safely. Make eye contact with drivers, so you both know you see each other. Road safety lessons should be fun and interactive. Teach your child to cross at intersections that have a pedestrian crossing light or a marked crosswalk whenever possible. Even at a crosswalk, be aware of traffic and always make sure that vehicles are stopped before walking. Use designated crossing points and follow pedestrian traffic signs and signals. Dress to be seen. Wear bright or light coloured clothing. In dark or bad weather, wear reflective material on clothes or accessories.

BA Backpack safety can prevent serious injuries

Trips and falls on the playground may account for the majority of injuries that send school children to the nurse’s office, but backpacks cause their fair share of injuries as well. Children routinely carry more than the recommended weight

in school backpacks and, compounding the problem, also carry their bags incorrectly. Doctors recommend that a child’s backpack should weigh no more than 10 to 20 percent of the child’s body weight. However, this figure should be adjusted based on a child’s fit-

ness level and strength. That means that the average seven-yearold second grader who weighs between 55 and 60 pounds should be carrying no more than 11 to 12 pounds in his or her backpack. A backpack that is too heavy may cause: Q Red marks on the

shoulders or back from the straps Q Tingling or numbness in the arms and back Q Changes in posture when wearing the backpack, and Q Pain anywhere in the back. To compound these problems, which also

e m s! o t c el n W tude S

2013-14 School Opening Information

may include nerve damage resulting from pressure on nerves in the shoulders, children should lighten their loads and carry backpacks correctly. The following tips are some additional ways youngsters can prevent backpack-related injuries. Q Carry only necessary items. Children should only carry what is required for that particular school day in their backpacks. If teachers routinely have students carry home many heavy books, parents can consult with the teachers to see if there are other options. Q Distribute weight evenly.

Items in the backpack should be spread out to distribute the weight across the entire back. Heavier items should be at the bottom of the pack. Q Use both straps. Using only one strap shifts the backpack weight to one side, causing the back and

shoulders to strain. Many orthopedists have reported treating children with back or shoulder pain as the result of carrying backpacks incorrectly. Q Lift safely. Children should lift their backpacks by bending their knees and lifting to protect their backs. There are some safety features parents can look for when purchasing backpacks. A padded back reduces pressure on the muscles and can be more comfortable, while compression straps make the backpack more sturdy. Additionally, reflective material on the backpack can make the child more visible to motorists.

Tips for quick weeknight meals Enjoying a meal together on a weeknight is a goal for many families. But adults often find themselves pressed for time on weeknights, and that time crunch can make it difficult to enjoy a home-cooked meal. But time is not the only thing getting in the way of family meals. Be it after school activities, long commutes or late hours at the office, many things can make it difficult for a family to sit down and enjoy a meal together. Studies have shown that families who eat together tend to eat healthier, as parents can more effectively monitor their kids’ diets. While it may not be feasible for parents and kids to scale back their busy schedules, there are steps parents can take to make weeknight meal

preparation quicker. By shortening the time it takes to make meals on weeknights, families might be able to sit down to dinner together more often. Q The most effective way to make more time for family meals is to plan ahead. Planning meals on the fly encourages everyone to fend for themselves, making it difficult for families to enjoy nutritious meals they can eat together. Plan for the coming week’s meals on the weekend, when you can survey your pantry and make a trip to the grocery store if need be. Q Dinner does not have be served hot, and cold meals often take less time to prepare. Consider serving salad or sandwiches on those nights when you are espe-

food should not take much time to cook, as even those dishes that take more time than simpler dishes like sauteed shrimp will still take less than 30 minutes to complete. Q Leftovers are often relegated to lunch, but extras from a meal cooked over the weekend can be used as a quick go-to meal on a hectic weeknight. If the family enjoyed the meal the first time around, there’s no reason they won’t enjoy it again. When eating leftovers for dinner, make sure the leftovers are fresh, but try to avoid serving leftovers the night after they were initially cooked. Enjoy meals as a family is a great way for families to eat healthy and stay engaged in one another’s lives.

cially pressed for time. When serving sandwiches, serve them on whole grain bread to add some nutritional value to the meal. Q Turn breakfast into dinner. There are no laws regarding what qualifies as dinner and what does not, so families without much time on their hands on a weeknight can turn breakfast into dinner. Eggs are both quick and easy to prepare, and they can be served alongside toast and grapefruit. When making omelets for dinner, add some spinach or another vegetable to make the meal more nutritious. Q Lean on seafood more often. Seafood can be healthy and delicious, but that’s not the only reason it’s an ally to time-strapped families. Sea-

Watch for and reduce back-to-school anxiety Back to school can be a stressful time for some children, but there are ways for parents to help. “The start of the school year can be a really positive time, full of new opportunities for young people, but it can also be overwhelming for some,” explained Dr. Connie Coniglio, B.C. Mental Health and Addiction Services. “If your child isn’t looking forward to school, they may be experiencing stress or anxiety. While some children and youth thrive on the back-to-school excitement, others may need a calming, reassuring environment to support them during this transition.” Anxiety — feeling worried, nervous, fearful — is normal from time to time in adults and children, but it’s a problem if your child seems to be anxious often when other children of the same age are typically not Signs and symptoms to watch for: Q Attempts to remain at home or with caregiver Q Refusal to attend school on certain days (field trips) Q Refusal to eat in public Q Refusal to use public bathrooms Q Extreme shyness, avoiding so-

cial situations or events Q Tantrums, crying, screaming Q Constant worrying Q Physical complaints with no medical explanation (stomach aches, headaches, difficulty catching breath) Q Seeking comfort/reassurance Tips for parents and caregivers: Provide regular routines – morning, school, homework, bedtime Provide clear expectations, limits and consequences Plan for transitions – getting to school, returning to school after breaks Help your child identify his or her feelings – nervous, intimidated, shy Pay attention to your child’s feelings Ask your child if they have ideas or solutions for a particular concern Show yourself identifying your own feelings, problem solving and being brave Remain calm when your child is anxious Hold realistic expectations that are right for child’s age Praise and reward even their small accomplishments.

COACHES: All our programs are taught by professional coaches who are specially trained and certified through Skate Canada and the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). PROGRAMS: CANSKATE: Canada’s only national learn-to-skate program for ages 3 to 14. Developed by experts to teach the skills that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating. Program focuses on fun, participation and skill development. We also offer a program for Pre-School aged children 3 to 5 years.

CANPOWERSKATE: A program for children who already know how to skate. Focuses on balance, power, agility, speed and endurance skills, all of which are especially important for hockey and ringette players. Full hockey gear required.

How to buy school clothes without busting your budget Parents often note that kids seem to grow like weeds. Pants that once reached to the tops of a youngster’s feet quickly become too short, while once-loose shirts may soon become too snug. Many parents find themselves regularly in children’s clothing departments stocking up on the basics, which can put quite a dent in already stretched-thin

budgets. Although children’s wardrobes are added to at various times of the year, the bulk of shopping occurs just before the school year begins. Though clothing can be expensive, families need not bust their budgets when shopping for kids’ clothing. By shopping smart and concentrating on fashion staples, it’s easier to stretch

STARSKATE: A program for children who already know how to skate. Lessons are in a group format and cover all elements of Figure Skating. Skaters are evaluated for participation in this program.

ADULT SKATE: Skaters can practice or take private lessons as long as they can already skate, have a coach and a Skate Canada Membership. FIGURE SKATING: For skaters that obtain a club coach and set goals in the art of Figure Skating.

Payment plans available for some programs.

money further. Q Spread out purchases. Staggering purchases also enables parents to develop a clothing allowance each and every month instead of having one large bill at a certain point in the year. Parents can even add to their children’s wardrobes during the holiday season, when clothes tend to get reduced again for holiday sales. Q Don’t discount hand-me-downs. Q Take stock of what you already have. Q Invest in the right high-quality pieces. Spending a fortune for a trendy pair of pants that may end up getting ruined on the playground is not the best way to shop for kids’ clothing. However, investing in a quality pair of shoes that will last much of the year is a good investment. Know when to splurge and when it’s okay to shop at the discount store. Q Stock up on staples. A straight-leg cut of jeans, some solid coloured polo shirts and an A-line dress or skirt

are some classic foundation pieces for children’s wardrobes. Such items tend to last longer than trendy items that may only last a few months before the next trend arrives. Q Learn to layer. Layering items can make pieces look like new by putting them together in different combinations. Layering a summer T-shirt under a fall hoodie gets use out of two different season’s worth of clothes. It also enables kids to be comfortable during unpredictable weather. Q Leave it to the kids. Parents often worry about what other parents will think of their own children’s clothing. Children do not typically worry about such things until their preteen or teenage years. You may spend less money on clothing simply because your child has a few favourite shirts and pants he or she wears over and over. That’s less laundry for you and less money you have to spend on new clothes.
