The Country Bluegrass Weekend attracted over 60 rigs which camped on the outfield at Barbara Diane Colin Ballpark in Greenwood. Local attendance was good according to Roland Berg, who organizes the annual event with his brother Randy. “Randy and I want to thank all who attended as well as the volunteers, our concession staff, all our local sponsors, the ladies from the United Church who catered the dinner, the City of Greenwood and the office staff at City Hall,” said Roland. This is the tenth year of the festival, which was started by Roland and Randy’s dad - Alfie Berg.

This year’s Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair has another enticement for those talented people throughout the area who enter exhibits. The prizes for the most exhibits at this year’s Fair have been increased to a whopping $500 for first, $300 for second and $200 for third place. The purpose for the increase is to try and create some healthy competition throughout the area for people to get as many exhibits as possible into all the fair categories. There is no fee charged for exhibit entries so we invite everyone to enter as much as they can, and maybe they’ll win one of the big prizes. This year’s Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair runs September 14 and 15. Performers include legendary children’s performer Fred Penner as well as Frank Sinatra impersonator Rick Valiant.

Parkview says goodbye to long-time administrator Lorene Matteis, the woman who has served as administrator of Parkview Manor for over a decade, has moved on. She began working at the senior’s housing facility in Midway in April 2002 – just one year after the doors opened. Lorene says she’s not interested in retiring, though she still has to find something to do in the Okanagan. She said her first choice would be to move Parkview and everyone over there. One of the biggest changes she remembers is the 2007 redesignation of five units as Assisted Living, which has allowed residents to stay in the community longer. “Everybody here feels like family to me,” said Matteis. During her time as administrator four people have celebrated their 100th birthday while living at the manor. “The board is awesome – everybody helps. The way the grounds and the building are maintained – the care and pride. This is an awesome team!” she said. The board has long reciprocated that respect and appreciation. In 2011 at a gathering to commemorate the 10th anniversary of opening of Parkview, West Boundary Senior Housing Society President Vicki Feist said of Matteis, “Without her we would be hard pressed to keep up the high

Before Parkview, Matteis worked for 14 years at the local bank, and their daughter, Debbie, graduated from Boundary Central Secondary School. She is moving to Penticton to join her husband, Marlon, who has a job as an electrician in a mill. Parkview is owned and operated by the West Boundary Senior Housing Society, a non-profit society formed in 1998. The society has an operating agreement with BC Housing to provide low-income housing for seniors. All 20 units are subsidized by BC Housing for rent only. There is a hospitality component, which covers kitchen (staff prepare two home cooked meals a day - lunch and dinner), emergency response system and a portion of administration. There are 20 units; 15 Independent Living and five Assisted Living. Greenwood resident Cheryle Thompson will be taking over as administrator. Bridesville hears history of region Bridesville Community Hall was the venue on Saturday, Aug. 24 for a fascinating talk on local history by Ken Favrholdt, Osoyoos Museum executive director and curator, and a highly enjoyable concert by Johnny Cash tribute singer Gary Kehoe. Peregrine Studios sponsored the event. Favrholdt explained how the early history of Bridesville and Sidley on the Canadian side was closely connected with Molson over in Washington State. Back in the early days, when these communities were founded, the border was far more open than it is now. Ken said one theory why Anarchist Mountain got its name was because Richard Sidley, the original Canadian customs officer and postmaster in Sidley, had radical political views. Bridesville was named after David McBride, who built a hotel in what became Bridesville. Ken also mentioned that famous U.S. Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman visited Osoyoos in 1883 and met John Carmichael Haynes, the Osoyoos customs officer. “Johnny Cash Equivalent” Gary Kehoe took his audience through a succession of Johnny Cash’s greatest hits such as Walk The Line, A Boy Named Sue, and Ring of Fire, as well as the Gospel song Will the Circle be Unbroken. He also showed photos of Johnny Cash’s life and told some stories about the legendary singer. Because he brought Johnny Cash’s songs to life so well, Gary was so popular that his audience didn’t want him to stop. Clarification for Midway council story The Midway Council Briefs printed on page 4 of our August 22, 2013 issue reported on an update by Deputy Clerk Tami Peters concerning the proposed extension of fire response to the west of Midway including Kettle Valley and Rock Creek areas. A letter outlining the plan had been sent to property owners in the proposed service area by Midway Mayor Randy Kappes and Fire Chief Walter Osellame on July 31. A reply form was provided for those who felt they might be interested in more information about the fee-for-service fire protection proposal. All those interested would have been returning the form. The form also asked respondents if they would like to attend an information meeting. The wording in our article unfortunately gave the impression that not everyone responding was in favour of the fire service proposal, which was inaccurate. What Peters had actually told Council was that not all those wanting more information were necessarily interested in attending an information meeting. We regret that our poor choice of wording may have caused concern or confusion.

School zones have different types of signage so you need to be cognizant of what the speed limit is at various times of the day near the specific school you are passing. According to the ICBC Driving Guide, if a school zone sign has a speed limit but no time listed then that limit is in effect from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days. Do not pass buses when the lights are flashing. Be prepared to stop if the bus driver has turned on their amber alternating flashing lights. You must stop in either direction when a school bus has red lights flashing. Do not begin moving again until the bus moves on or the driver signals that it’s safe by turning off the lights and pulling in the stop sign. The kids get a class on school bus safety when they come into the school system and they probably get a refresher course each September. But we drivers don‘t get that reminder – it is our responsibility. Making sure that kids get to and from school each day is a huge responsibility and we can all do our part. Be aware and act responsibly.

Boundary youth soccer set to start

Registration is open for the fall season with the Boundary Youth Soccer Association (BYSA). “With the first games scheduled for Sunday, September 8, “ Time is of the Essence,” said Tracy Davies, technical director with the association. “Ideally, registration will be done by September 3 so that coaches and teams can get at least one practice in before the six-week season starts.” Teams are kept small so kids are on the field and not watching. Many age divisions are supported: U16, U13, U11, U9 and U7 plus Kicks for Kids (ages 3 and 4). Both players and coaches are wanted. Davies told the Times that as of Monday morning she was still trying to find a coach for the West Boundary U11 team. Based upon registration received to date Davies has already drawn up the list of teams. Fall soccer will be six weeks long with a tournament at the end. Registration is $45 plus a $50 jersey deposit, that is given back at the end of the season. “BYSA has an All Kids Play policy,” said Davies. Recognizing the tough economic

The Lieutenant Governor of B.C., the Honourable Judith Guichon, will be opening this year’s Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair September 14. “Her Honour is the province’s representative of Her Majesty The Queen in British Columbia. Her Honour has spent a lifetime working and volunteering in community organizations and has an extensive background in ranching, so is a perfect fit for this year’s Rock Creek and Boundary Fall Fair theme Powered by Volunteers.” Guichon was sworn-in as the 29th Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia on November 2, 2012. Prior to this appointment she owned and operated Gerard Guichon Ranch in the Nicola Valley. The Guichon family has ranched in the area since 1878. Guichon’s father-in-law was awarded the Order of Canada in 1974 for his leadership in Cattleman’s Associations and his contribution to agriculture in Canada. Her four children now manage the ranch with a 700-head cow-calf and 700-yearling operation. Her Honour has also been involved in several organizations. She served on the local hospital board and Community Health Council and was on the Community Health Foundation board. Prior to this, she served as a 4-H Leader and started a recycling society in Merritt with a neighbor. She also served as a director for the Fraser Basin Council of B.C., director of the Grasslands Conservation Council of B.C., member of the Nicola Water Use Management planning committee and played the flute in the Nicola Valley Community Band. Prior to her term as Lieutenant Governor, Guichon served on the Provincial Task Force on Species at Risk and completed a twoyear term as the president of the British Columbia Cattlemen’s Association. She has also been a part of the Ranching Task Force for B.C. and the British Columbia Agri-Food Trade Advisory Council. B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon will be on hand to open the Rock Creek Fall Fair on Sept. 14. Submitted

He turns amusing anecdotes into hilarious, compassionate stories. Perrin’s practice in the Creston Valley is the source of his well-loved series, Adventures of a Country Vet. Reading the books embroils us in a world quite different than our idealized version of what it would be like to be a veterinarian. The reality is sometimes shocking and gross, but with Dr. Dave telling it like it is, it is very entertaining. To maintain artistic and financial control of his work, Perrin decided to try something that is becoming more common, self-publishing. In 2000, Dave’s Press was established and his first book in the Adventures of a Country Vet, Don’t Turn Your Back in the Barn, was published. It was followed with the release of Dr. Dave’s Stallside Manner (2001), Where Does it Hurt? (2003), and Never Say Die (2006), and When the Going Gets Tough (2010). Included in the schedule are the route number, area of bus route, driver’s name, stop name and approximate pick-up and drop-off times. The Grand Forks Airport played host last weekend to a well attended fly-in/airport appreciation event. Hundreds of local residents and tourists alike flocked to the airport to see dozens of different aircraft and shop a variety of vendors. “The fly-in is open to anyone that wishes to come down and have the experience of landing here,” said Ann Gordon, president of the Grand Forks Flying Association. Gordon said the draw for the pilots is the always popular Elks pancake breakfast as well as the farmer’s market and the lovely area. “It’s just been excellent,” she said. “I’m thrilled at the number of airport that have decided to come in. A lot of the local fly-ins have been cancelled for whatever reasons. This has provided an opportunity for people. People with private airplanes really enjoy these.” On Saturday, the group played the movie Top Gun. “One of the marshallers here is a graduate of the Top Gun Flight Academy in the United States,” she said. “He spoke to the audience and told them (Above) Stacey Conacher from the Trail Model Flyers club shows off some aerobatic stunts with his what the top gun school is all about. Smart metres get approval FortisBC has decided to move ahead with the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project after receiving approval from the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) on July 23, following an extensive public review process. “Advanced meters, also referred to as smart meters, will help FortisBC customers see how their electricity is being used, so they can better understand their bills and make more informed decisions on how to conserve energy,” said Tom Loski, vice-president of customer service at FortisBC. “Electricity rates will be lower with advanced meters than without them, since the new meters will reduce electricity theft and nearly eliminate the expense from manual meter reading. It’s an exciting project that will provide a variety of benefits to customers, both now and into the future.” As part of the BCUC decision approving the AMI project, the commission directed FortisBC to submit an application providing an option for customers to receive an advanced meter with the wireless radio transmissions turned off if they pay the incremental cost of opting-out. FortisBC has agreed to file an application by the Nov. 1 deadline providing details about the radio-off option, including fees charged to customers related to the incremental costs. The process of exchanging the approximately 130,000 electricity meters throughout B.C.’s Southern Interior will start next year and is expected to be finished by the end of 2015. The project affects only FortisBC’s electricity customers, and does not include changing gas meters anywhere in the province. Advanced meters are similar in appearance to traditional meters, but are able to wirelessly transmit meter readings and other operational information such as power outages.
