Dirt biker killed in logging truck collision

22-year-old man is dead after the dirt bike he was riding collided with a logging truck in what RCMP are calling a “freak accident.”

The local man was dirt biking on Lodgepole Forest Service Road east of Elko on Sunday at around

4 p.m. with a friend when they encountered a Canfor truck coming the opposite direction.

The truck swerved to the right to try to avoid the man, but while the one dirt bike swerved right and avoided the truck, the victim went left, straight towards the truck. The truck driver tried to avoid the bike, ending up in the ditch, but the bike collided with the truck.

“At the moment it just looks like a freak and very tragic accident.”

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“At the moment it just looks like a

freak and very tragic accident,” said Sgt. Will Thien from the Elk Valley RCMP. “It happened very fast and there was no time for the truck driver to try to avoid hitting the bike.

“We are not suspecting alcohol was involved.”

The investigation is ongoing. Sgt. Thien said the RCMP are unlikely to be releasing the man’s name.

L

ittle Sprouts gardening program is great for kids that like to get their hands dirty.

The free program, run by the Fernie Women’s Resource Centre, is held at the Fernie Community EcoGarden in Prentice Park every Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to noon during July and August, and encourages kids to learn about dirt, bugs, and gardening.

The program has been really popular, with more than 40 kids showing up most weeks.

Saturday, August 31st Kids up to age six are invited, along with their parent/caregiver. As well as messing around in the dirt, there are also crafts, snacks, and songs!

Two arrested for grow op in Fernie

A

small grow op was taken down in Fernie last week.

On August 20, Elk Valley RCMP executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act Search Warrant at a residence in Fernie and seized several mature marijuana plants

as well as a quantity of dried marijuana buds in mason jars. A 35-year-old male and a 29-year-old female, both Fernie residents, were arrested without incident, and were released pending charges.

Sgt. Will Thien, from the Elk Valley RCMP said the quantity was under 10 plants and charges are unlikely to be related to drug trafficking.

ork on the roads in the area known as the Ghostrider subdivision in Fernie is underway.

The project, which in total is costing nearly a million dollars, will see Dicken Road resurfaced and Manitou Road paved. The interior gravel roads, Ktunaxa Road, Shadow Road and Kutenai Road, will also be re-graveled.

The City of Fernie is also dealing with drainage issues in the subdivision.

“In spring time there is typically a lake down there,” said Jim Hendricks, Chief Administrative Officer at the City of Fernie. “So we are doing some drainage work to deal with that as well as the resurfacing work.”

Fernie is home to several businesses, including Ghostrider Motorsports, Fernie Brewing Company and Fernie Auto Parts.

Putting asphalt on Manitou Road is the most expensive project, costing $429,000. It is due to be completed

by September 13. Resurfacing part of Dicken Road in the subdivision will cost $173,500 and work on the gravel roads and drainage will cost $189,000 and should all be completed by September 6.

The City of Fernie is also currently resurfacing Fourth Street, at a cost of $263,000.

“In spring time there are heaves on Fourth Street coming down the hill,” said Hendricks. “So we are dealing with that issue now.”

The work on Fourth Street is scheduled to be finished around press time (August 28).

adet Alais Englehardt of Fernie, was the recipient of an Army Navy Air Force Veterans (ANAVETS) Cadet Medal of Merit at the Final Parade and Sunset Ceremony at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre.

Cadet Englehardt is a member of 2757 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps, Fernie.

The Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans in Canada, or ANAVETS, is Canada’s oldest Veterans association with a proud history dating to 1840. The ANAVETS Cadet Medal of Merit recognizes the top cadet during the summer’s training at Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre (VACSTC) on each of the Instructor level courses. In addition to the medal, the cadets are eligible for a $1,000 bursary which can be applied to any

accredited university or community college.

Cadet Englehardt was enrolled in the sixweek Fitness and Sports Instructor Course which not only focuses on individual fitness, but prepares the cadets to fulfill the duties of a sports and fitness instructor at his or her home corps. Cadets study the theory and the benefits of sports, learn muscle structure, injury prevention and safety, and nutritional planning. They also learn to lead warmup and cool-down sessions and assist in planning and running team sports.

After the final parade, the cadets made their way to their homes in western Canada.

During the summer, 1,200 army, sea and air cadets from western Canada will have spent up to six weeks in the Okanagan Valley centre, expanding the training they receive at their home corps, developing new skills and forming friendships.

The Fernie Academy received matching prizes. In addition, both students received a copy of the anthology in which their writing was published.

Along with these two first prize-winners, 19 other students from The Fernie Academy were also selected to have their writing published in these same anthologies.

Their writing was chosen from thousands of pieces submitted from across the country. The national recognition highlights the emphasis The Fernie Academy places on the written word.

Ex-Fire Chief imprisoned for sexual offences

ormer Sparwood Fire Chief, Rick Goold, has been imprisoned for charges related to touching three young girls for sexual purposes.

Goold, 57, who pled guilty to three separate charges in June, received a sevenand-a-half month jail sentence with a two-

year probation order.

Crown counsel, Ann Katrine Saettler, said both crown and the defence had taken the same position on sentencing, and the fact that Goold had come forward himself with information about two of the charges was taken into consideration.

Initially there was only one charge

against Goold when one of the girls came forward to police with a complaint. Upon police investigation, Goold admitted to the offence and then came forward with information about two other offences.

“It is quite unusual in that he not only admitted to the first offence that police were asking him about,

but then came forward with additional offences that he was not being investigated for,” said Saettler.

The three girls were all aged between six and nine at the time

of the offences, which took place between 1999 and 2005, while Goold was Fire Chief in Sparwood.

“The offences were not related to his duties as Fire Chief,”

The Clothesline drop boxes are used as a fundraising program for the Canadian Diabetes Association.

he new boat launch in Dogwood Park is nearly ready to go.

Work began at the site last week and the ramp was being installed as The Free Press went

to print Tuesday evening.

The City of Fernie received the permit for the new boat launch from the Ministry of Environment (MOE) Monday morning last week, and work began almost immediately to replace the old ramp that dates back to 1995.

“The original ramp was put in 18 years ago when the new bridges went in over the Elk River,” said Terry Nelson, Senior Engineering Technologist for the City of Fernie.

“The old bridge concrete was used to make it, and it was a 20 per cent slope.

“This new one is properly engineered at a 14 per cent slope.”

The whole project, including landscaping trail alignment, signage and benches, is budgeted at $60,000.

There will also be four bays created so boats can wait their turn by the ramp.

“Before, boats would have to wait on the other side of the river then rush over when the ramp was free,” said Nelson.

N

ews that the RCMP busted a small Fernie grow op last week stirred up mixed responses among readers. Some readers feel that cracking down on these small grow ops is a total waste of police time and taxpayers’ money, but others say these people are criminals as bad as any others and should be taken down.

Short of looking the other way, the police still have no option but to charge casual marijuana users with simple possession. It’s a criminal activity, even if the grow op is not involved in trafficking. That means costly paperwork for the cops, yet more strain on the overtaxed justice system and criminal convictions and records that can adversely affect citizenship, jobs and travel. It’s also hugely inefficient. Barely half of drug-related cases result in convictions.

And, of course, taxpayers are footing the bill.

However you feel about it, it’s hard to argue against the initiative currently being toured around the province by Sensible BC. The Vancouver-based group has prepared legislation called The Sensible Policing Act, which would effectively decriminalize marijuana by stopping B.C. police from making searches or arrests for simple possession. The law also calls upon the federal government to repeal marijuana prohibition, so that B.C. can legally regulate its cultivation and sale.

The proposed law has been accepted by Elections BC, and the group will have 90 days to collect signatures from 10 per cent of the registered voters in every electoral district, beginning September 9.

The Sensible BC-commissioned study touted by the group indicates that more than $10 million is spent on enforcement annually. That figure wouldn’t disappear entirely by decriminalizing simple possession, but at least a good chunk of that total could probably be directed into more pressing police concerns.

Pot is big business in B.C. and in Canada, and allowing such a commodity to go unregulated and untaxed is a lost opportunity for taxpayers.

But, let’s not forget, there are health risks linked to smoking marijuana. These include dependency problems, mental heath problems and lung damage. It can cause paranoia in the short term, and in those with a pre-existing psychotic illness, such as schizophrenia, it can contribute to relapse. Like alcohol, it’s not something that benefits society, but that doesn’t mean it should be illegal. Just because something is legalized, it doesn’t mean everyone is going to take it up as their new hobby.

Sensible BC have 90 days to collect over 400,000 signatures. If they collect those signatures, the Sensible Policing Act can be brought to a referendum in September 2014.

Sensible B.C.’s initiative is an ambitious one, and may be futile without finding support in all corners of the province.

On August 24 at 8 a.m, over 50 runners nervously lined up for the start of Heiko’s Hellish Half Marathon 2013. There is no doubt about it; this is one of the best trail runs around.

The trail was well marked, the aid stations had enthusiastic attendants and prize giving was at El Guapo, with every competitor receiving a hearty meal and prizes (thank you sponsors).

Events like these take a lot of organizing and in this case, it's a very small group of people (Ross and his friends) that come together to make it so successful.

If you haven't done this run yet, plan to next August. It makes you proud to live in Fernie and it's a great way to showcase our mountains to the out-of-towners.

Jaffray’s Orr will hit the court for Canada

W

hen one door closes, another one sometimes opens.

That is certainly true for a young Jaffray athlete, who will soon be competing on the world stage for Team Canada.

On October 1, 2011, Shacarra Orr was in a motor vehicle accident on her way to a volleyball tournament.

The accident ended up leaving her with a permanent loss of mobility in her right arm.

With much hard work and physiotherapy, Orr has since learned how to compensate for her bent arm, and adjusted to doing the skills lefthanded.

Orr was and is an avid volleyballer, playing on both club and school teams.

After the accident, she took to coaching. "I got back into it that way, just in case I never played again," she said. "As soon as I was out of cast and OK to start practising I started again."

Earlier this year, while on a trip in

Edmonton with her club volleyball team, another coach approached Orr and asked if she would be interested in trying out for Team Canada's Sitting Volleyball team.

"I was at a club tournament, and one of the guys — one of the Sitting Volleyball team coaches — also coaches a club team. So that's when he noticed I had a disability, just watching me play, how some of my movements were limited. He invited me to the (Team Canada Sitting Volleyball Team) tryouts, which were taking place a few weeks later."

Initially, Orr was not sure what sitting volleyball was but after checking it out on YouTube she knew she was interested.

In sitting volleyball, a 0.8 metre-wide net is set at 1.15 metres high for men and 1.05 metres high for women. The court is 10 by six metres with a two-metre attack line. The rules are basically the same as regular volleyball. It is a sport for athletes with disabilities, though there are no athlete classifications

"One of my goals is to try to get people around our area who

She went to Vancouver for 10 days at the beginning of the summer, and is off

INVITATION TO TENDER

Operation of the Sparwood Transfer Station SEALED TENDERS marked, “Tender - Operation of the Sparwood Transfer Station” will be received by the Solid Waste Superintendent, Environmental Services, Regional District of East Kootenay, 19 – 24th Avenue South, Cranbrook BC V1C 3H8 until 2:00 pm local time on October 24, 2013. Tenders received after the specified time will be returned unopened to the Bidder.

The Contract Documents including Bid Forms may be obtained as of September 10, 2013 from the Cranbrook RDEK office during regular office hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday) upon receipt of a non-refundable deposit by cash or certified cheque in the amount of $50.00.

A site meeting is mandatory and will be held Wednesday October 2, 2013 at 11:00 am. The meeting will be held at the Sparwood Transfer Station, 1001 Highway #3, Sparwood, BC. TENDERS must be accompanied by: •

a bid security deposit in the amount of $20,000.00 (Certified Cheque or Irrevocable Letter of Credit).

The successful bidder shall be required to provide a BANK IRREVOCABLE LETTER OF CREDIT, in the amount of 50% of the total of the first year of the contract, valid for the life of the contract.

The Regional District reserves the right to arbitrarily accept or reject any or all bids and to waive irregularities at its own discretion. Without limiting the generality of the foregoing the Regional District reserves the right to arbitrarily reject any bid submitted by a contractor that has a disputed account against or due by the Regional District or against whom the Regional District has a disputed account. The lowest or any bid will not necessarily be accepted and the Regional District reserves the right to negotiate terms and conditions with the successful Bidder.

Fernie fighters get in the ring in Kelowna

T

wo Fernie boxers headed to Kelowna on the weekend to get in the ring with some new competition.

Rick Miller took on Ross Walker, a former kickboxer and ‘toughman’ competitor from Nanaimo. The pair went the full three rounds before the judges decided unanimously in favour of Walker. Despite losing the 115 lb weight division match, Miller said he was pleased with how the match went.

“He outlasted me endurance wise, but he was a lot more experienced than me,” he said. “The first round went really well, but then I took a good body shot in the second round. I’m not sure whether it made me hurt or angry but the third round was just about lasting until the end.

“But I felt like the match went awesome – well, as good as fighting can go!”

Miller was expecting to have a rematch against an old opponent, but when he got to Kelowna, he heard the fighter was injured.

“So I was set up against someone new, and also had to wait around because our match was second last,” said Miller.

“I learned a lot. My first two fights have both been against way more experienced fighters but they have taught me about perseverance and where I need to get to.

“As far as losses go, they have been good ones. I haven’t been turned off boxing.”

He said the promoters have been good about pairing him with other fighters that make for a challenging, but not dangerous fight.

Anna Michalaska took on Kayleigh Marie from the 100 Mile House Club and had a great match ending with a Technical Knock Out (TKO) called by the referee in the second round, in favour of Marie.

“The girl fighting her

was a brawler,” said Miller. “She did really well though and she wanted to keep fighting. It was the ref that called it, not Anna.

“Anna’s goal was getting in the ring. So that was a very big win for her, even though she did not win the match.”

The MadKatz boxing club hosted the

event at the Rutland Community Hall in Kelowna.

MadKatz head coach, Geoff Lawrence, said he was impressed with the Fernie fighters. “The Fernie Old School made an amazing effort to come out here without an official coach, and they both put great efforts into their fights. I look

forward to coming to a match in Fernie and seeing them fight again.”

The Fernie Old School Boxing Club has mixed nights Tuesdays and Thursdays and

ladies only on Monday nights.

They will be holding their own fight night in early fall where they hope to have six homegrown fighters on the fight card.

Terry Hume is organizing and walking in the fundraiser on Saturday, September 14 on team ‘Going For It.’ This year, with the Elk Valley and Cranbrook hosting organized walks, participating is more convenient. This will be Sparwood’s first SuperWalk but

Hume’s third. “In previous years, we had to travel to Invermere or Nelson,” said Hume. “We welcome all challengers; the more the merrier.”

The walk will start at the Sparwood Seniors’ Centre on Fourth Avenue and will go to the library. What seems a relatively short walk will be a challenge for some people with Parkinson’s.

Hume got involved because he had started a support group in Sparwood after he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2007.

“When I was diagnosed, I didn’t know anyone else who had the disease. It’s nice to band together.”

There are approximately a dozen people in the Elk Valley but there are mainly six members who join in the monthly support group at the Sparwood library.

Organizations, businesses, families and friends can walk together and enjoy the triumph of teamwork while raising critical funds for Parkinson’s research, support services and education.

Participants of the SuperWalk can look forward to a luncheon following the walk at the Seniors’ Centre with numerous prizes awarded and a silent auction.

Environmental Protection Notice Application for a Permit Under The Provisions of the Environmental Management Act (Section 137) We, Teck Coal Limited, intend to submit this application to the Lieutenant Governor in Council to authorize the discharge of effluent from a sediment pond. The source of discharge is mine affected water in the Dry Creek valley.

The land upon which the facility will be situated is Lot 1, Plan NEP 21818, District Lots 4588, 6755 and 6756, located near Elkford British Columbia, within the Dry Creek watershed. The land upon which the discharge will occur during initial development (Year 1) is Lot 1, Plan NEP 21818, District Lot 4588, located near Elkford, British Columbia, within the Dry Creek watershed.

Afterwards, the land upon which the discharge will occur is Lot 1, Plan NEP 21818, District Lot 4588, located near Elkford, British Columbia within the Fording River valley.

The maximum rate of effluent discharged from this facility will be 1.8 m3/second. The operating period for this facility will be 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.

The discharge will be managed to meet instream site performance objectives of 10 µg/L selenium and 0.38 µg/L cadmium in Dry Creek (as maximum 30-day mean values). The characteristics of the discharge to the Fording River (as maximum 30-day mean values) are as follows: • Total Suspended Solids 50 mg/L • Cadmium 0.0014 mg/L • Nitrate 141 mg/L • Selenium 0.32 mg/L • Sulphate 1,067 mg/L • Total Dissolved Solids 1,982 mg/L The types of treatment to be applied to the discharge are: a diversion structure on Dry Creek will facilitate interception and diversion of mine-affected water from the Dry Creek watershed, a transfer pipeline will convey

mine-affected flows from the diversion structure to a series of three sediment ponds, an outfall structure will discharge water from the sediment pond system to Dry Creek during initial development (Year 1) and a conveyance pipeline system will serve to convey water from the sediment pond system to a discharge location on the Fording River (starting in Year 2). Working in combination with the Elk Valley Water Quality Plan, currently being developed by Teck Coal Limited, this system has been designed to manage water quality in Dry Creek and the Fording River at levels that will not have significant adverse impacts to aquatic life.

Women, bikes and Fernie’s trails

ernie Women on Wheels is a group of passionate mountain bikers that are more focused on camaraderie than competition.

Heather Lavers started the group in June by creating a Facebook group and inviting her female friends to join. She decided to use the page to organize weekly Wednesday evening bike rides, and

was surprised by how popular it was right off the bat.

“The first ride we had 15 women come along,” she said. “So that was great. Our busiest ride was 22, but it varies every week. Some weeks we might only have eight.”

The last few rides have been so popular the group has been breaking off into smaller groups based on ability levels.

She said that riding with women is a different experience to riding with men. “I enjoy riding with my husband, but men can become quite competitive,” she said. “I really enjoy riding with women because everyone is really supportive of each other. It’s not intimidating and there’s no pressure. It’s just super fun.”

She made it clear that they are not qualified teachers though. “We are just a bunch of friends helping friends,” she said. “It’s just for fun.”

Dawn Scarrow, from Toronto, has gone along for the last two rides with the group while she visits Fernie. She said she also liked the no-pressure atmosphere.

“It was a very comfortable place to learn.

Socially it was fun too but the first week I was really too tired after the ride to enjoy the social aspect fully!”

The group always finds a venue for a cool post ride beverage, a good opportunity to discuss how their ride went and share tips.

They also hold maintenance sessions and skills sessions, and even one week had a talk about wildlife safety from Kathy Murray, WildsafeBC Community Coordinator. “We try to cover all the different aspects of mountain biking, from safety, to repairs, to skills, to socializing!” said Lavers.

“Really my goal was, and still is, to get women into the sport. I’m so passionate about the sport and it makes me happy to see other women enjoying it too!”

The group meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at The Guides’ Hut on Second Avenue. To get involved, join the Fernie Women On Wheels Facebook group, where, as well as finding out where the next ride will be, you can also share biking tips, arrange a buddy for another ride and hear about which stores in town have some great deals!

For a lot of golfers, the sand trap is a real nightmare.

As in all aspects of the game, in order to be at ease when playing in a sand trap, don’t hesitate to take some lessons and to practice. A lot of golf clubs have practice areas with a sand trap.

he sand trap is the obstacle, often located near a green, so dreaded by many golfers and which can soon ruin a good golf score. Even worse than the big lake on the right or the wooded area on

the left, the sand trap, or bunker, represents a real nightmare for many golfers.

Because golfers slow their swing for fear of overshooting the green, the ball often falls short and is caught in the

In order to produce a good shot to get out of the sand trap, a golfer must use a sand wedge.

All you have to do is to adopt a slightly open position and to place yourself in such a way that the forward foot is level with the ball.

Don’t grip the club too tightly. Open the face of the club and hit about 5 cm behind the ball. At the end of the line, it’s the sand which propels the ball out of the bunker.

The rules stipulate that trying a practice shot in a sand trap is forbidden under pain of penalty. On the other hand, if water is present in the trap, the player can, if the ball is in the water, move it out of the water but not in the direction of the hole.

Ball tournament remembers Joe Varosi Friends organize slo-pitch event in honour of the friend they lost to cancer

A

memorial ball tournament in honour of a popular local man who died from cancer will be held for the third year.

Joe Varosi lost his life three years ago to cancer at the age of just 52, but his friends have kept his memory alive by playing his favourite sport, slo-pitch, every year.

The first year was just for fun, then last

year the friends decided to raise money for cancer research, and raised $3,000. This year they are planning an even bigger event, starting with a game between two local bar teams, then followed by the “hasbeens versus wannabes” game, between the Fernie Hotel team and a group of older players.

“Its probably a good thing the ball diamond is right next to the Fernie Hospital,” said organizer Dave Harrington, who was Joe’s best friend. “In case one of

As a parent, the pressure to get your children pets is huge.

Shelby Cain From your kids, yes, but also from society in general… other parents, friends…you know who you are. Parading around with your adorable puppies, your children’s faces plastered with joy. As our kids plead…”why can’t WE get a puppy?” … the guilt creeps in. And trust me, I fully agree with the benefits and pleasure pets can bring to children. But here’s the problem. Most days I feel like I am so deep in the well of my time and attention that even another thimble full and I’ll be scraping bottom. Even the thought of smudging a little patch of algae off the bowl with my thumbnail so Nemo can be seen doing swim-bys in his murky water seems completely over whelming.

This is the dilemma that my sister-in-law, Laura, found herself in. Lately the topic of getting a pet was constant and unrelenting.

After one too many run-ins with you new -puppy people, the guilt became too much.

But she was really smart. She decided to borrow a friend’s wildly energetic puppy for a week. Unfortunately, things went rapidly downhill after one day of the Rufus test. He was messy, and loud, and pulled on his leash resulting in some serious road rash. So Rufus went home, but the kids were devastated.

And as all parents know, seeing your kids disappointed is like driving a knife into your heart. Solution – scratch the pet itch with smaller, easier pets.

The next day they hit the pet store in Cranbrook to pick out three baby mice. Yes, mice. That you actually pay money for. I think the time allotment for novelty to wear off pets is in direct correlation to the size of the pet, so mice don’t stand a chance. Fastforward a few weeks and there’s a cage of stinking, biting, cannibalistic vermin hidden in the garage. The mice had to go. Tears were shed as the bewildered mice were nudged, prodded, and then practically kicked to freedom. In the weeks that followed rain and unfortunately an unseasonal snow shower pelted the window. And then, one sunny afternoon, brave little Taco made his triumphant return…in the mouth of the neighbour’s cat. Unfortunately the children gathered at the window and watched in horror as the cat re-enacted a scene from Guantanamo. Laura pried the still breathing Taco from the cat’s mouth, made a good show of it for the audience, and placed him in the woodpile.

Moral of this story. Pets are awesome. Pets are work. If you too are scraping the bottom some days, you may want to stick to petting puppies on the street…for now.

Smitty’s still serving the community after 23 years A true family restaurant with big meals for low prices and a passion for good service

mitty’s restaurant has been a staple of Fernie dining for the past 23 years, offering a wide range of food that spans breakfast, lunch, dinner, and even snacks.

The current owner, Qaiser Hamid, moved to Fernie last December with his family and bought the business off a friend, after having been a partner for some time. “I really enjoy working in the restaurant business,” says Hamid, “but it was Fernie that brought me here. Within five days people knew my name, and I thought that was really great. I feel like I am a part of

a family here.”

Hamid notes that he likes running a Smitty’s restaurant, in particular, because it isn’t fast food, but it also isn’t expensive.

“You get lots of food for cheap,” says Hamid, “and lots of variety, with healthy choices.

Our food is fresh food, made the right way.”

Hamid has spent the past six years in the restaurant business, both in Texas and in Montreal, but says he likes the family aspect of running Fernie Smitty’s. “I lived in big cities for a long time.

Everyone here respects each other, is very nice, and very family oriented.” He notes that Smitty’s is truly a family restaurant,

for Mothers’ and Fathers’ Day, and as of September, they will be providing a free lunch or dinner coupon per month to one student from each of the Fernie schools.

The restaurant currently employs 13 staff, with experience levels that stretch from two months to 20 years and that include both local and seasonal workers.

I haven’t heard a complaint yet, though, and I think it’s because a good rule we live by is if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t serve it.”

Hamid’s favourite item is the Smitty’s Classic Burger, but he, and many customers, like the pancakes and waffles, as well.

Normally, Smitty’s is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m, but extended their summer hours to 9 p.m.

Yogis young and old enjoy first wellness festival

The world record was not broken, but 600 people joined the chain on Sunday evening.

ernie residents joined together this past weekend to enjoy the inaugural Fernie Wellness Festival.

The event celebrated various healthy practices, with chiropractors, massage therapists, and other wellness professionals giving free demonstrations amid various events, markets, and entertainers. “For me, relaxing and doing the yoga party, and not having to think about organizing anything was my favourite part,” said Cheryl Sherry, organizer of the event.

The closing event, an attempt to break the world record for the longest yoga chain, was held on Second Avenue at the Sunday Social. “Yoga is a big part of Fernie life,” said Sherry, “so we thought that doing the yoga chain would be a good way to bring people to our wellness festival.”

Despite a chain of approximately 600 people, the world record was not broken.

“We applied to do the world record, thinking it was 296

people, so we thought 300 people is all we need - that’s definitely doable. So, I set things in motion and applied to Guinness World Records, but then found out that the record had been beaten with 696,” said Sherry.

“Obviously I knew before we started that we just didn’t have the numbers,” said Sherry on the attempt, “but it’s just phenomenal that so many people turned up. The streets were really quiet this afternoon, then all of a sudden at 3 p.m, the streets filled up with 600 people, lined up for the world record attempt – an enormous number for our tiny downtown.

Each individual person that showed up contributed towards almost breaking a world record – a record set in India where 1.2 billion people reside!”

“I think this is fantastic community spirit,” said Mayor, Mary Giuliano, “and I really applaud the organizers. It’s fantastic to see Fernie residents here.”

Participants from as young as six months old to as old as 95 years young participated in the event. “I do stretches every night for 10

minutes,” said Marie Nodge, the oldest of the participants. “I’ve done it for 16 years.

I think it’s important that you do something every day.”

Volunteers also handed out goodie bags to participants, which contained items donated from local businesses, including environmentally friendly produce bags made by the Women’s Resource Centre.

The Rotary Club of Fernie also sold corn to participants and spectators, raising money for its local scholarship program.

“I’d like to thank everyone for coming out,” said Sherry. “We can’t do these sort of events without the numbers. This is our first yoga festival in Fernie and we want to build on it and hopefully have an even better festival next year.”

Second Avenue was filled with 600 yoga fanatics, from six months old to 95 years young on Sunday, joining together to make a chain. The event marked the end of the two-day festival of yoga-related events.

Local runner takes second place in Heiko’s Hellish

R

unners from various parts of Canada a n d the US joined Fernie locals this past Saturday in Heiko’s Hellish Half, a half marathon that takes participants along a 25 km trail, beginning just off Hartley Lake Road and ending in Annex Park.

The trail, known for its steep climbs and descents, led the runners from the 1,400 m starting line up to the Three Sisters Pass at 2,300 m, over the Mt. Fernie Ridge, and back into town a course containing approximately 1,400 m of vertical gain and over 1,600 m of Photo by A. MacDonald descent.

“It’s near the end, and it just goes on forever in a really steep descent. It’s just a lot of pounding on your legs.”

Latimer placed second, with a time of 2 hours and 46 minutes, coming in 26 minutes after winner, Jakub Sumbera, from Invermere.

“I’ve been trying to do [the race] for the past three years,” said Sumbera, “but I always end up with injuries before, so I never got a chance.

I really enjoyed the technical sections of the trail - jumping

from rock to rock and avoiding trees.”

The race is completely selfsupported, requiring participants to bring everything they need with them. “You take everything yourself, and you pack it all out,” said organizer, Ross Frazier.

“If you litter, you are disqualified. We want to leave everything better than we found it.”

Despite this, safety is taken into consideration, with volunteers sweeping the trail before and after the race, and monitoring racers as

they reach checkpoints along the trail, ready with supplies if they are needed.

After getting permission from the Fernie Trails Alliance and the province, Frazier was given the go ahead to put the first race on three years ago, and after getting his graces, decided to name the race after builder of the trail, Heiko Socher. “He’s been in this town for a long time and is a local legend,” said Frazier on his decision. “He loved the idea of the race.”

“I’d like to say that

the average active person in Fernie can, with a bit of extra training, do the race,” said Frazier referring to the difficulty of the trail. “It’s very scary looking, but if you go and do it and push your own pace, you could definitely finish it under five hours that’s walking a lot, and only jogging flats.

It’s scary, but doable.”

This year saw the first injury the race has had in its three years, with the youngest racer, 19-year-old Lindsey Roberts, rolling her ankle.

We had 40 ladies out to compete.

LABOSSIERE: Joseph Georges Rodolphe Labossiere passed away on August 16 at the Elk Valley Hospital at the age of 82 years.

Joseph was predeceased by his brothers Jean Baptiste, Gerard, Viateur, Leonard, Armand, Maximilien, Lionel, as well as his sisters Valerie and Clotilde (Cecile). He was also predeceased by his father Leon and mother Marguerite (nee Dupras). Joseph was raised in Haywood, MB. He became a missionary for the White Fathers (Pere Blanc) for a few years. He left the missionary and returned to the farm and worked at the local General Co-op. Later, Joe moved to Elkford, BC. He spent most of his life working in the coal mines doing numerous jobs. He became a strong member of the Knights of Columbus. He spent many years volunteering through this organization to help the community as needed. In his last few years, he moved to Fernie, BC due to illness. Joe’s ashes will be returned to Haywood, MB where a family service will be held at a later date. ROBERTSON: It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John “Ian� Robertson on August 19, 2013 at the age of 70 years.

Ian was a family man; he adored his daughters and had a very special place in his heart for his grandchildren.

He was a welder by trade and was a long time and well respected employee of Transwest/SMS. In his spare time, when not with his wife and family, he loved to golf.

He is survived by his loving wife Carol, daughters; Lindsay Halvorsen (Derrick) and Jamie Robertson (Brett Paton), as well as grandchildren; Olivia, Alyssia and Sofia Halvorsen and Riley and Cash Paton.

Also left to mourn his passing, are his brother Ned Robertson and sister Wilma Lambden (Gary). He will be dearly missed by his friends and family but the memories of the good times in the past will live on.

A Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 35 Caribou Drive in Elkford.

ROSS: Frances Emily It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dearly beloved grandmother, great grandmother, Frances Emily Ross of McCreary Manitoba on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at the McCreary Alonsa Health Center, McCreary Manitoba.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her loving grandchildren, David Blair Turnbull of Foxwarren Manitoba, Elizabeth Jill Klapp (Andrew MacIntyre) of Sparwood British Columbia, Robert Ross Turnbull (Samantha) of Rocanville Saskatchewan, Kathleen Mary Lorraine Murray (Alti) of Elkford British Columbia, John Duncan James Klapp (Jennifer) of Fort MacLeod Alberta, Andrew Frederick Klapp (Candice) of Elkford British Columbia; son in laws D’Arcy Blair Turnbull (Gladys) of Rocanville Saskatchewan, Frederick John Klapp of McCreary Manitoba; great-grandchildren Greg, Hayley, Ceara, Olivia, Declan, Isabelle, Liam, Sarah, Cass, Jesslyn, Katelyn and nieces and nephews. Frances was predeceased by her son James David in 1951, husband David James in 1991, daughter Lorraine Marti 1992, and daughter Elizabeth Jane in 2010.

Frances was born in Winnipeg Manitoba August 11, 1921. She attended Allen Wood and Lord Selkirk School. Frances married David James Ross of Winnipeg Manitoba November 25, 1942. Fran started her career as a legal secretary in Winnipeg. Upon marriage Fran raised her family with her husband in the communities of Grandview Manitoba, Lacombe Alberta and later McCreary Manitoba in 1965. Shortly after her arrival in McCreary, Fran served as Secretary Treasurer of the Turtle River School Division until her retirement in 1988. Frances relocated to Elkford British Columbia in 1996 to be with her youngest daughter and family.

It was here that Fran enjoyed her later retirement with great grandchildren, golfing and serving the seniors of this community.

Fran moved back to Lorray Manor, Dauphin Manitoba in 2008. After suffering a stroke Frances moved to McCreary/ Alonsa Health Care Center under the gentle care and tender hands of the community she called home. Frances contributed greatly to rural health care, public education and advocacy needs of senior citizens. She was an avid Blue Bombers fan, expert arm chair curler and enjoyed rounds of golf with friends and family.

Funeral Service was held Monday August 12, 1013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Knox United Church in McCreary Manitoba officiated by lay minister Wendy Denbow. Interment was at the McCreary municipal cemetery. Eulogy was given by granddaughter Elizabeth Jill Klapp. Active pallbearers were Alti Murray, David Turnbull, Andrew MacIntyre, Robert Turnbull, Greg Wagner, Burt Klapp.

Honorary pallbearers Jim Klapp, Andrew Klapp, D’Arcy Turnbull, Jack Klapp, David and Sharon Ross, Linda Klapp, Jean Davis, Cathy McVey, Jack and Gail Hrenirchuk, Steve Gingeras, Shirley Bennett, Val Maciura.

If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made Muscular Dystrophy Canada, Multiple Sclerosis Society or Canadian Cancer Society. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for those who showed kindness and concern for Frances in her final days.
