Illness can’t pin down Albrecht ‘When a doctor says they have to get something, he says ‘I hope you’re not getting your golf club’.’

The golf ball-sized tumour was discovered when Bonnie walked in the bathroom as James was taking a bath. At first she thought he was starting puberty, but what she had a glimpse of, didn’t seem right so she took him in to see a doctor.

James never thought anything of it until the doctor visit.

“He got used to the feeling of it being tight in there,” Bonnie explained, adding that James probably had the tumour for at least six months.

“When they took it out, he said ‘wow, everything is so loose down there.’ He didn’t know that it wasn’t normal for it to be so tight down there.’”

The tumour, along with a testicle and a lymph node were removed on April 19 and James is now on week 14 of a 55-week chemotherapy treatment plan.

He has a venous access device (VAD), an insert in his chest that allows direct access to his arteries and heart when administering chemotherapy treatment.

can cause James to bleed to death, which Bonnie is concerned about due to James’ hyperactivity.

James said he is not

embarrassed about losing a testicle, but he was uncomfortable losing his hair.

“First couple of weeks

I was embarrassed,” James said about going bald, which he eventually accepted and laughed off. His sense of humour can be seen in a video of himself pulling out chunks of loose hair from his head. “I go everywhere bald now.”

James attends John Howitt Elementary and will be entering Grade 5 in September. He has had friends either accompany or visit him at the hospital and he is known for both his high energy and sense of humour.

“Every time a doctor says, ‘does it hurt?’ he says, ‘only when my sister kicks me there,’” Bonnie said. “When a doctor says they have to get something, he says ‘I hope you’re not getting your golf club.’”

While James is able to bounce back quickly from each chemo treatment, there is one he gets every three weeks, which is much stronger and has actually wiped him out; but never for long.

“[Three] weeks ago, he spent five days in the hospital because he had a reaction to the chemo and his immune system was compromised,” Bonnie said, explaining that after one day of being bedridden, James was playing video games and dragging his I.V. pole all over the place in the hospital.

“Here is this little boy and we are treating him like a pin cushion.”

James also doesn’t mind the hospital food and he refers to the servers as his personal chefs.

His tastebuds have been affected by the cancer treatment as most things now taste the same. His favourite foods right now are cheese, chocolate milk, diet Coke and stuff from McDonalds.

Originally from Orilla, Ont., Bonnie moved James and his younger sister to Port Alberni three years ago; they now live in Cherry Creek with other family members. Bonnie has created a Facebook page called Sunny Side Up, where she documents James’ cancer treatment.

Richard Wasylyniuk is extremely grateful that his son is completely healthy since his cancer went into remission last year.

However, the whole experience has been financially draining.

Brett Wasylyniuk, 5, was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a soft tissue cancer, in 2011.

He had a tumour the size of an egg removed from his left leg when he was three and he now goes back to Vancouver for a check-up every three months.

“So far so good that he’s been healthy and it hasn’t come back yet,” Richard said, adding that it was last year on March 12, a day before his birthday, when he found out that his son’s cancer was gone.

“They got the whole tumour out and the radiation killed whatever that might

have been left, but with some kids they use the radiation to kill it but it’s (the cancer) still there.”

While Brett is doing fine and behaving like any other rambunctious fiveyear-old, the 52 weeks of chemotherapy involved travelling weekly between Vancouver and Port Alberni—and that was costly for Richard.

The single dad, who is a self-employed plumber, was unable to work for most of the year that his son underwent cancer treatment and he

is barely getting by today.

“My son is doing well and I’m grateful for that, but financially it has been a burden,” Richard said, explaining he has creditors calling him regularly.

“I’m still in a [financial] hole.”

Richard explained that there were times when he took Brett to Vancouver for treatment, expecting it to last just a day, but because of complications, they would end up staying for a week.

Local teens applauded for bravery Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

The two Port Alberni teens who rescued a drowning man from the Somass River earlier this month were recognized at a luncheon on Tuesday.

Some time after 8 p.m. on July 31, Oswald Felsman IV, 13, and Deion Watts 16, rescued Malcolm Swan, 25, at the Paper Mill Dam area. Swan, who was intoxicated, was seen struggling to keep his head above the water as he tried to swim back to shore when he got caught in the rapids.

The teens jumped into the water and pulled Swan out.

Swan, who is from Ahousaht, attended the luncheon.

“Malcolm is my middle son and we’ve already lost his older and younger brother,” Taylor said. “His life is very precious.”

Chief Hugh Braker, Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas, RCMP Insp. Mac Richards, Julie Anderson representing both School District 70 and Neill Middle School, and Port Alberni fire Chief Tim Pley spoke at the luncheon, praising the teens.

“Thank God we are here celebrating the saving of a life instead of a celebration of life of someone who passed away,” Douglas said. “Some people would not have intervened.”

Pley talked about how one can tell a lot about a person by how they react to extreme stress, which he said tells a lot about Felsman and Watts. He also challenged the two teens and Swan to take this experience and pay it forward by taking the lead to prevent such mishaps from happening again at the river.

“I ask that these three young men to be water advocates of the Somass River,” Pley said, explaining perhaps lifeguards or volunteers are needed.

“Let’s do something together for next summer.”

Braker said at the luncheon that there have been many casualties around the Paper Mill Dam area because the rapids are strong and unpredictable.

This was actually the second time Watts has saved a life. When he was nine, he saved a four-year-old near the same place.

Both Felsman and Watts took all the attention and praise in stride.

“We’re glad we got him out of the water,” Felsman said, when asked how felt about all this attention. “You just do what you can do to help.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

PCU earns degree status Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

Port Alberni has a new degree-granting university.

Pacific Coast University for Workplace Health Sciences (PCUWHS) will now be able to offer a Bachelor of Disability Management degree, which is expected to start in September 2014.

PCU-WHS president Wolfgang Zimmermann said this degree is unique and raises Port Alberni’s stature internationally.

“This degree in disability management is the first of its type in the world,” Zimmermann said.

“We are going to be running two streams.

One will be the NIDMAR [National Institute of Disability Management and Research] continuing education modules.

“The other piece now is the academic piece, which this accreditation has made possible.”

Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser said it has taken years of hard work and dedication for the university to get from the paper planning stage of a new university to constructing the building and now being able to offer a degree.

He said support for the university to become accredited was supported across party lines, but for some reason it was a long and agonizing process.

Fraser is an NDP MLA whereas the Liberals are in power.

“I had to push successive ministers over and over again,” Fraser said, crediting the new Advanced Education minister for finally allowing PCUWHS to grant degrees.

“For me, it was a bureaucratic nightmare.”

Nanaimo-Alberni MP James Lunney says he plans to run again in the 2015 federal election, but he’s unsure if it will be for the new CourtenayAlberni riding.

The Federal Boundaries Commission for B.C. finalized the redrawn federal boundaries last week. The new Courtenay-Alberni riding will include Courtenay, Qualicum Beach, Parksville, Port Alberni, Tofino and Ucluelet.

Currently, Port Alberni is in the Nanaimo-Alberni riding, which Lunney holds.

The change will also see Nanaimo combined into one riding, instead of it being split in two.

“It would make sense for me to run in Courtenay-Alberni,” said Lunney, who lives in Oceanside.

“It’s two years until the next election and I will make a decision after consulting with a lot of people about exactly where I’ll be running.”

Lunney was one of four Vancouver Island MPs who filed objections against this new configuration when it was first proposed.

He blames the new configuration on the commission wanting to bring Powell River into a Vancouver Island riding, something he said that doesn’t make sense and didn’t have to happen.

He explained that

his and his fellow Vancouver Island MPs’ counter proposal would have seen Nanaimo-Alberni shrink in size on the Nanaimo side and a number of other changes island-wide so Powell River could stay with the Sunshine Coast. It was rejected.

“It’s disappointing,” Lunney said.

“I love this riding of Nanaimo-Alberni and I have been representing it for [13] years.

“It’s diverse and is in the most beautiful part of Canada.”

Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas took a pragmatic and Port Alberni-centric view on the boundary change.

A Port Alberni man has created a local crowdfunding site to help people raise money for various causes.

Crowdfunding is an online method for people and organizations to raise money for various causes including charities, disaster relief, start-up money for aspiring musicians, filmmakers and new businesses. Some well-known websites

com last month with his business partner and girlfriend, Jen Briand. Krishan said his website is

different from other crowdfunding sites as his will allow users to create profiles and network with people, similar to Facebook and LinkedIn. “I started this because I had many ideas I was trying to get funding for,” Krishan said. He was unfamiliar with crowdfunding until his website designer told him in the early phases of creating the website that dragondeal22 was similar to other existing sites.

“I didn’t know where to take it. I looked into venture capital but it’s very hard to reach some of those people.”

The name, dragondeal22, was inspired by CBC Television’s Dragons’ Den, a show where budding entrepreneurs pitch their products to established business people in an effort to court investors, Krishan explained.

The 22 stands for the 2.2 per cent take his website takes from

monies raised.

“A lot of places charge five per cent,” Krishan said. “For every $100 raised, $2.20 goes back to the site to maintain it [and eventually for profit].”

Krisan has been busy promoting his site. He has met with the mayor and the city’s economic development manager to inform them about his site. He also met with Craig Summers, executive director of Port Alberni Association for Community Living, to

convince them to use his site to fundraise.

“It’s a real good concept,” Summers said, adding that he hasn’t committed to using the site. “I think we’re going to wait for it to get a little more developed.”

Krishan added that he has an entrepreneurial background and has worked mostly in customer service and sales. He and his partner, Briand, were both born and raised in Port Alberni.

College rolls out welcome mat Sept. 3 North Island College is rolling out the welcome mat on Tuesday, Sept.

3, with a variety of informative activities for students attending the Port Alberni campus this fall.

Classes have been cancelled to make way for a full day of helpful and fun events, beginning at 9 a.m.

Tidebrook’s coming down Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

The Tidebrook Motel is finally coming down, 10 months after its second fire.

The Tidebrook, located at 4356 Gertrude St. was first hit by a fire on Jan. 13, 2012. A second fire on Nov. 3, 2012 caused extensive damage to a former restaurant on the same property.

Since then, the city has been working at getting Alberta-based owner Jack Purdy to either bring the structure up to code or tear it down.

Those efforts have failed and Purdy has exhausted his

repeated requests for an extension.

“It should have been taken down months ago,” said Coun. Cindy Solda. “The city had to do it without the owner.”

A contractor has been hired by the city to remove asbestos and lead from the building, which started on Wednesday and is expected to be completed by Saturday. Demolition of the building is expected to commence next Tuesday, Sept. 6.

The final cost of the demolition, estimated at $23,000, will be billed to Purdy. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

Riding two horses at once Sometimes it’s OK to drop the bomb Considering its mandate to try to equalize the populations of all federal ridings, the Federal Boundaries Commission for B.C. has a tough job.

At regular intervals, it must respond to shifting population numbers — between provinces and rural to urban, for example, to achieve its mandate.

That sounds simple enough. Redrawing riding boundaries without dividing communities and alienating local residents makes the commission’s work much more complex.

After an initial proposal for the sprawling Vancouver Island North riding that would have bisected Courtenay, and another that would have divided Cumberland, the FBCBC settled on what was behind Door No. 3.

In its final judgment, the commission has removed most of the Comox Valley from Vancouver Island North.

All of Courtenay and Cumberland plus Denman and Hornby islands will slide over into a new riding called Courtenay-Alberni.

The new riding will include Port Alberni, Tofino, Ucluelet and land stretching down to about Lantzville.

It’s not clear what this large chunk of the Comox Valley has in common with the rest of the new riding. Then again, what did Comox have in common with Port Hardy in the previous riding?

The ramifications of having two MPs representing various sections of the Comox Valley will likely depend on the parties represented by the members of Parliament whom voters elect. In Port Alberni, MP James Lunney will have to decide where or if he wants to run.

We’ll no doubt get politics as usual whatever riding we’re voting in.

It may have been just another transaction at the deli, but boy it irked me.

The woman in front of me at the deli was ordering her dinner and there was not a single please or thank you to be had in the whole conversation.

She might as well have been typing in answers at the bank machine for all the humanity she showed the poor girl behind the counter.

I don’t think I’m too much of a rebel when I suggest there’s a place in social interactions for basic good manners.

Really.

You don’t have to be a Prissy Purepants to have good manners. They work for everyone. Think of it from an entirely selfish point of view if you must.

Displaying good manners makes people like you more.

They’re even useful if you’re soul is pure evil.

Because they make people like you more, it’s easier to manipulate your victims when the time is ripe.

Hey, I’m no angel.

Although my usual swear words include “Christmas!” and “Criminy jinkets!” I have been known to use the occasional overlycolourful phrase in the newsroom.

I put this down to my desperate need to fit in.

Imagine my horror then, when I heard my own son, my flesh and blood, drop his first F bomb the other day.

We were up on Zippermouth Mountain at my mushroom patch when it happened. I was pretty excited, because the weather had broken and it had been raining for three days.

I had realistic expectations. I just wanted to find one nice, big yellow chanterelle to wave in the

face of my mushroompicker colleague who scoffed that it was way too early.

Once we hiked through the bush to my first patch though, it was Bingo!

Bingo! Bingo! We came out of there with three pounds between us and I was feeling pretty smug as we hiked up towards patch number two.

Suddenly, Alex’s foot hit the ground with a different kind of crunch and when he looked down he saw his foot was covered in bees. He’d stepped on a nest and the bees were really, really mad.

“AAAAAHHHH! &*^$#!” he bellowed and jumped back, frantically brushing his legs.

“Owww! ^*&%$!”

As any parent can tell you, in a situation like this, blind instinct steps in. As a father, it was time to act.

“Don’t swear!” I yelled.

He was running now, jumping over logs and

Later that day, over a bottle of calamine lotion, we talked about what happened.

“Come on dad, I was being attacked,” he said.

“They got me seven times!”

I like to think of myself as a pretty progressive father, so we eventually worked out a compromise.

It is now perfectly OK in the Horner household to drop the bomb, but only if you were being swarmed by bees.

This was later amended to include finding yourself covered in leeches — my own personal horror.

Although realistically, any vocalizations I made in that scenario would likely be high-pitched beyond human hearing, it’s always a good idea to be sure, manners being so important and all.

Mailbag: Feedback on blowing smoke and putting out fires Politics evident in firefighting To the Editor,

Re: Are we losing our Mars?, July 18.

Someone can’t tell the difference between a turbine engine turning a propeller (CL215T and CL415) and a piston engine driving a propeller (Martin Mars, Canso/Catalina, and original CL215 water bomber).

Note also the term “amphibious” which the Mars is not (it can only land on water).

The BC Forests website makes a misleading claim that lakes for scoopers are only near the coast, whereas circa 2003 media were full of photos of the Mars and CL series waterbombers picking up from the lakes at Kelowna and Penticton.

There’s also Harrison Lake, huge Williston Lake, sizeable lakes in northwest B.C. near Burns Lake and the Bulkley Valley, some in the north Okanagan (Shushwap Lakes near Salmon Arm), in the Kootenays (behind dams on the Columbia River), and of course the Mars home base of Sproat Lake. And yes, on the coast there is the ocean.

QUESTION of the week One the other hand, Vancouver Island has land airports useable by landplane waterbombers, such as Cambell River, Comox, Nanaimo and Victoria.

Firefighting has politics, some North American agencies are accused of favoritism, certainly there is heated debate about which tactics are best, and much detail.

(For example, a claim that the retardant spread ahead of a fire has to dry out to be most effective.)

Sounds as though each type and size of firefighting aircraft, and each type of liquid and additive, has its best uses.

Indeed, I saw both Mars in action fighting a fire near the Sooke potholes—their round trip speed picking up from the Strait of Juan de Fuca was amazing.

Then they held off to allow helicopters to hit hot spots, remained ready to dump lots of water on that fire if needed

MacKay knows blowing smoke To the Editor,

Justice Minister Peter MacKay criticized Liberal leader Justin Trudeau for admitting he had smoked a joint of marijuana three years ago. Mister MacKay said:, “By flouting the laws of Canada while holding elected office, he (Trudeau) shows he is a poor example for all Canadians, particularly young ones.”

Mister MacKay sounded foolishly pompous in light of his imperfect past.

Has the ex-defence minister conveniently forgotten about the Search and Rescue helicopter he used for personal advantage and his less than truthful explanation after being found out?

Education for everyone To the Editor,

Sea change for education

This week’s question:

Millions of children are back to school.

But not in many countries in subSaharan Africa, Asia or the Middle East.

Around the world,

almost 57 million elementary schoolaged children — especially girls — don’t go to school at all. Millions more receive a poor-quality education and will not be able to read, write or count.

Investing in basic education is one of the best ways to fight poverty.

Over the last 12 years, the number of out-of-school primary school-aged children has decreased from 102 million to 57 million, with support from mechanisms like the Global Partnership for Education (GPE).

Such a decrease will surely have a huge impact on reducing poverty over a long period of time.

The GPE is an effective global partnership, devoted to ensuring that all children are enrolled and receiving a quality basic education.

Through its pooled funding model, the GPE provides development partner countries with

additional incentives to develop and implement sound national education plans.

As more countries recognize the importance of basic education, there has been an unprecedented demand for educational resources globally.

Canada is among the rich countries contributing to the GPE, but is still not contributing its five per cent share as a developed country.

To do so, it would need to increase its contribution from $45 million to $125 million over a period of three years.

Let’s hope Canada will make this move in the right direction over the next months.

Let’s remember that by restoring corporate tax rates to their rate before 2008, Canada would have saved $5.4 billion two years ago and $11.2 billion last year.

Sitting at my school’s graduation in June was lovely and emotional and everything you hope for when you are a high school teacher.

But during the ceremony the valedictorian said something I found quite profound. She said, “Most of us were in Grade 1 in our first week of school when the tragedy of 9/11 happened.”

And it hit me. What a world these children have had to grow up in. And then the other shoe dropped for me.

The government I work for wants to lock in a contract with BC teachers for 10 years.

I am in no means suggesting the tragedy of 9/11 is the same as our contract struggle.

I would suggest that we look at how much the world has changed since then and how changes in B.C. education that will be required in the next 10 years will be thwarted if we don’t have a school system and a collective agreement that will be flexible and adaptive to students’ and teachers’ needs.

There are times in our lives when everything just seems to go wrong - a family member has health problems - the roof begins to leak just when the bank balance is almost empty - the company you work for is downsizing - and so it goes on. Many of us turn to God in prayer remembering in our Sunday School lessons that In Luke Chapter 11: verse 9 Jesus says “ Ask and it will be given to you, seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

So we turn to God in prayer but after four or five prayers we abandon our prayers because we did not get an answer. ASK, SEEK, KNOCK are action words - you need to keep praying God will answer. The answer may not be exactly what you were expecting but he will answer if you just keep asking, seeking or knocking.

Fish were biting The Royal Canadian Legion fishing derby is always the precursor to Salmon Fest, and despite smaller numbers the fish were biting.

The Legion sold 150 tickets and 65 coho and springs were caught.

Richard Derkson won with a 19.3-pounder.

Dennis Mills was second at 12.5 lbs. followed by Terry Rodinsky (12 lbs).

Junior winners were Johnathan Rhyno (9.7 lbs.), Brock Lamont (9.6 lbs.) and Christian Kawula (9.3 lbs.).

“The actual catch was certainly not as much as we’ve had in other years,” Legion spokesperson Graham Fox said, nor were the number of competitors. But that was to be expected, he said. editor@albernivalleynews.com

The 42nd annual Port Alberni Salmon Festival kicks off this Friday, Aug. 30 with a barbecue, live entertainment and fireworks at Victoria Quay.

The fishing derby portion of the festival will be different this year in that fishers are only allowed to catch coho— the chinook fishery has been closed due to poor returns.

While organizers are expecting fewer entrants and fewer numbers of fish caught, Dan Washington said it has allowed them to get back to the basics and concentrate on other things, like entertainment and even salmon enhancement.

“I would speculate between 1,000 and 1,200 entries,” Washington said. “Our last coho-only derby was just over 1,000 entries.

“The fishing’s pretty good, apparently.”

There will be daily raffle draws for prizes donated by local businesses.

This year’s event will include a kids’ zone, sponsored by Re/Max MidIsland Realty.

Karaoke is back starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Kuu-us Crisis Line Society presents its 16th annual celebrity dunk tank on Saturday from 10 a.m. to a little after noon. All

dunkees are raising money for the honour of being dunked; people can then pay to try and dunk them.

Almost 4,000 pounds of salmon purchased from French Creek Seafoods are being thawed and filleted for the four-day barbecue.

Last year volunteers barbecued 2,200 dinners and countless other fillets.

brewery.”

They also have a good sales rep in Rob Ivezich, and retired sales rep in Peter Rueschmann, who put Pacific Western Brewing in touch with salmon enhancement organizations in the Alberni Valley.

Details of the program will be revaled on Saturday at the event. Groups will be able to apply for funding in the fall.

Brewmaster Henryk Orlik will also be on hand to discuss the trio of beers chosen for the pairing.

Admission to the beer tasting is free and open to the public.

Port Alberni based MP ideal, says mayor From / 7

He hopes this will mean more representation for Port Alberni, something he feels has been lacking.

“I think we occupy a very low profile on their radar and I would like to see that increased,” Douglas said about the federal government. “How much attention we get right now is not enough.”

The mayor made clear that the city’s current relationship with the provincial and federal representatives have been good, but it would be stronger if those representatives were local residents, which is something he would like to see happen in the next federal and provincial elections.

Douglas blames Port Alberni’s past history as a booming paper mill town for

causing this lack of attention. Now with the city diversifying its economy and plans to become a major Pacific gateway port, he wants more federal involvement in improving the city’s economy.

“I think it’s really important in the provincial and federal level because they would be more in tune with what affects the community,” Douglas explained.

“Both our provincial MLA and federal MP live outside the community.”

Douglas also said he has no interest in running for federal politics.

“I haven’t thought about that,” Douglas said, when asked if he would run for the newly distributed riding.

Hupacasath loses FIPA ruling A federal court justice has rejected the legal challenge of the Hupacasath First Nation to stop the Canada-China free trade deal.

The Hupacasath did not establish that Canada should have consulted and accommodated them prior to ratifying the Foreign Investment

Man charged with illegal fishing Parking lot hit with B&E’s Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

A First Nations man is facing charges for illegally fishing on the Somass River earlier this week.

The man, whose name was not released but is known in the Tseshaht First Nation community, was seen placing a net spanning the width of the river near the bridge located at River Road and Falls Street, just before midnight on Sunday.

The fisherman left the net in place overnight.

At about 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Port Alberni

RCMP spotted a man in a canoe approach the net and gather the caught fish.

He was ordered to shore and detained.

Nine coho, one jack spring and one jack sockeye were caught in the net. The 11 fish were dead so were given to First Nations elders.

“He knew it was closed,” said Tseshaht First Nations fisheries manager Andy Olson. “He has been participating in this kind of act in the past.”

Olson said because the Tseshaht are in agreement with the

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) on this commercial fishery closure, the band supports prosecuting this fisherman.

In the past, if a First Nations band disagreed with a fishery closure, the band would financially help defend their people’s right to fish, but that won’t be the case with this violation.

“Court costs and any penalties, he will strictly be on his own,” Olson added.

“We have been quite clear with community members about this [abiding to the

closure] so they all know and they are supportive of it.”

DFO West Coast Vancouver Island supervisor Jim Robson said the maximum fine for a first offence is $200,000 and forfeiture of any equipment used during the illegal fishing, including the boat. He said this is the first person charged in the area this year.

“We’ve received reports of some illegal fishing but overall, the compliance with the First Nations and DFO closure has been very high,” Robson said.

“We will be patrolling more and we ask the public to report any activity they see.”

Chinook salmon fishing is closed this year due to low returns.

Robson said coho fishing is anticipated to start soon, but it would be mostly hook and line fishing allowed. In specific small areas, recreational coho fishing is expected to be allowed.

He also encourages the public to call the RCMP if they see any suspicious fishing.

Port Alberni RCMP is warning people to be vigilant when leaving their cars overnight at the Kingsway parking lot near the train station, after a rash of break-ins.

RCMP spokesperson Jen Allan said that by last Friday, she had heard of at least five reports of vehicles being brokeninto, theft and gas siphoning.

“Often people will

park their vehicle there and go on a couple of days’ fishing trip or boating and they would leave their vehicles unattended for a couple of days,” Allan said. “When the shops are closed, there doesn’t seem to be any good surveillance in the area. There are not a lot of apartments or housing looking down on the parking lot, which allows a good opportunity for thieves and vandals.”

This Labour Day, let’s reflect on our accomplishments—and work even harder Let’s face it, for most people in our society, the real meaning of Labour Day has faded over the years. It’s now less about acknowledging the role workers have played in building our society, and more about the last long weekend of summer.

As union members and leaders, we have an obligation to the generations that came before us—and to future generations—to work harder to teach people the real meaning of Labour Day. It’s about remembering the sacrifices made by the gen-

erations that preceded us, and the gains they were able to make that benefit every worker today, whether unionized or not. Things so many of us take for granted, like the 8-hour day, or the 40hour week. Weekends! Pensions, medicare, and other important benefits all came about at least in part because of the labour movement.

Labour Day is also about recognizing our sisters and brothers around the world who are taking on many of the issues our predecessors faced here, but with even few-

er protections or legal rights.

In countries like Mexico, for example, labour activists not only face potential criminal charges for advocating for workers’ rights but they actually face death. While we have much work to do here in BC and Canada, we must also recognize how much progress we have made and share the lessons we’ve learned with working people all around the world.

But Labour Day can’t just be about the past, nor can we allow ourselves to be lulled into complacency about our stan-

dard of living compared to other countries. While the labour movement and working people have achieved great things here, there are far too many people who have to work not just one or two jobs, but sometimes three or four just to make ends meet.

There are too many families who can’t afford childcare, yet need quality care for their children so they can take that hard-to-find fulltime job. Increasingly BC’s economy is coming to depend on temporary foreign workers who are paid less, receive fewer bene-

fits and have fewer rights than Canadians. And still, despite some incremental progress, women are still paid less than men for the same work in far too many cases.

And now we see the Harper Conservatives and Christy Clark’s BC Liberals attacking unions and workers’ rights in very much the same fashion as right-wing Republican governments in many American states. CUPE BC’s 85,000 members, and the 625,000 members of CUPE National across the country, are joining with the Canadian La-

bour Congress to push back against this regressive agenda—not just to protect what generations before us fought and in some cases died for— but to continue to fight for fair wages, good benefits and a solid pension for our members, and all Canadian workers.

So, while Labour Day is a celebration, it’s also a time to ready ourselves for the struggles ahead.

The Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock stops in Port Alberni on Friday, Sept. 27. The team will stop at Alberni Toyota for a lunch with the public at 1 p.m.

He said that he hasn’t been able to get much work these days and he relies heavily on his mother to cut down on the cost of daycare so he can take odd jobs.

“There is no government support,” Richard said. “The ferry is paid for but then you have mortgage payments, food for when you’re there [in Vancouver], and you can’t leave a three-year-old when he’s sick.”

Fundraising amongst friends and family raised about $6,000, but mortgage payments and bills were more than $2,000 a month.

Richard has chatted online with James Albrecht’s grandmother (see cover story), offering

her support and advice from his own experience. He encourages people to help them out financially.

“This lady here is in the same position as me as she’s [basically] a single mother and I’m a single dad,” Richard said.

“Port Alberni’s population is what, 18,000? If everyone contributed $2, that would be $36,000 to help her.

“Even a frigging dollar will help that lady get through.”

As for Brett, he starts Grade 1 in September and thanks to the Make a Wish Foundation, he will spend his birthday on Sept. 22 visiting Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm and Universal Studios. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

The 2013-14 edition of the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Jr. A hockey team hit the ice last weekend for a trio of exhibition games, tying Cowichan Valley 3–3 on the road, and losing to Victoria 4–2 on the road and 6–2 at home.

Not an auspicious start for a team in transition, but not a worry for head coach and general manager Kevin Willison.

“At the end of the day the boys had a long week,” Willison said.

“Training camp is not an easy time of year,” he said, adding that main camp was larger than he and assistant coach Adam Hayduk anticipated.

But that was last weekend.

“What we lack is size at the front end. We don’t want to get pushed around.”

He and Hayduk will be looking to make a change up front in the coming weeks to bring some size up front.

Behind him, Blake Pearson has been the surprise of training camp, Willison said.

Pearson, a 1997 player from the Okanagan Hockey Schools has had a good camp.

“He got thrown in [the game] in Victoria and shut the door.

“He looks very solid,” Willison said.

The Port Alberni Ladies Basketball League starts up Tuesday, Sept. 10 and will run Tuesday nights until Oct. 29.

Two games are scheduled for each night: at 5:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. in the ADSS B gymnasium.

Several athletes from Port Alberni have returned from the 2013 BC Seniors’ Games in Kamloops with medals. There were a total of 51 from the Alberni Valley competing.

After six weeks of ups and downs, Mike Pichor was declared the Alberni Golf Club men’s club championship last weekend, winning over Jim Proteau.

Visiting seniors impressed with the Valley Recently, a couple of seniors from South America came to our community and enjoyed 10 days visiting various places of interest the Valley has to offer.

Clarence Leeson and Estela (Nana) Delano expressed admiration for the environment we live in.

“We are very impressed with the natural beauty of the Alberni Valley,” Estela said. “My husband and I have walked through the forest, been to the lakes, the river and enjoyed seeing the facilities of the city: the Rollin Art Centre, the museum, recreation centres, Harbour Quay, the North Island College, etc.

have been married for 51 years and are the proud parents of three children,

including one son who lives in Vancouver, and grandparents of three. They come from Valparaiso, the second largest city in Chile, known to many as the “Pearl of the Pacific”, with its colourful buildings, typical “paseos” (promenades) on the many hills that characterize the port city.

Visitors from all over the globe spend time appreciating the area of this Pacific Ocean port.

“Very soon we are going back home with a great feeling; we are more energized and positive after spending such a wonderful time in a community like Port Alberni,” they said.

“We must add that something that really made us feel at ease and so comfortable here was the people.

Wherever we went during our stay, we were nicely greeted and made to feel welcomed at all times, as soon as they knew we were visitors to the Valley.

“It’s is very interesting because almost everybody asked us, almost right away, if we had already seen places like the Harbour Quay, Cathedral Grove, the Alberni Inlet, the farmer’s market, the Multiplex arena, and other venues and natural places, etc. I think the people here love to share with pride the beauties of their hometown,” Estela said.

While in town, Leeson Delano visited the Abbeyfield seniors home. There, residents, staff and board president Marlene Dietrich gave them a warm

welcome and shared with them aspects of their communal life and personal experiences, including their backgorund, their early lives in the prairies, the west coast or Europe, etc.

The residents also were keen in learning from the visitors about themselves, their country’s geography and culture, their families and their place of origen.

In the near future Clarence and Estela are planning to become residents of an independent living home.

“Ideally, we would love to live in a home like Abbeyfield,” they said.

“People there look so content, relax and very independent.”

Clarence and Estela left the Valley last week with souvenirs, mementos, lots of photos and unforgettable memories of their time in Port Alberni.
