Abbotsford’s Warm Zone drop-in centre for marginalized women must be out of its current location by Sept. 30 but is having difficulties finding a new place as it faces ongoing funding concerns. Co-ordinator Michele Giordano said one of the issues is that the agency has been unable to secure long-term sustainable funding, but most landlords require the signing of a three- to fiveyear lease. “We can’t do that if we don’t know if funding is going to be granted year after year,” she said. The other factor is trying to find a location that is zoned for the work the agency does and that is close to other services, such as the Salvation Army and Abbotsford Community Services that Warm Zone clients access. The drop-in centre is currently located on McCallum Road across from Jubilee Park and is open to “street entrenched” women. It provides a place where they can escape the dangers of the streets, get a meal, take a shower, and do laundry. They can also attend support groups, get help accessing substance abuse treatment, receive condoms and clean needles, and talk to a counsellor. Continued on A5

Abbotsford Police have released a new video detailing one woman’s experience with an impaired driver. What makes the video unusual, is the drunk driver was her. The incident occurred months ago and at the time, the woman expressed remorse and took full responsibility for her actions. Bruin sightings down this year, says conservation officer

Although residents of east Abbotsford have seen bruins in their neighbourhoods recently, reports of bear sightings in Abbotsford this year are down, according to local wildlife authorities. Last week, a woman in Auguston fought off a bear with a shovel after it climbed her fence and began to fight with her pit bull. Conservation officer Don Stahl said the incident is “a really unique case, where a person goes after a bear to save their dog.” Stahl said the woman’s yard backs onto a ravine, which are “natural bear highways” through east Abbotsford neighbourhoods. He said the bear likely entered the yard to eat from the bird feeders, and when confronted with a pit bull, saw it as a threat to her two young cubs. He said that reports to conservation officers are generally simple sightings or bears getting into garbage. There have been

continue, Stahl said people can make changes in order to prevent run-ins with the animals. Stahl said one of the main attractants for bears is bird feeders, as bird food is high in fat

and an attractive meal for bears looking to bulk up for winter. He added that people can take down their feeders – birds have plenty of food sources in the summertime – and put them back up in midNovember when the need is greater. Stahl said another main attractant is garbage, and advised people not to put out any garbage until the morning of pick-up. For homeowners with fruit trees, the fallen ripe fruit can attract bears, and Stahl said picking it up, or taking ripe fruit from the trees, can help reduce the chance of bears entering into yards. He said it is important to note that the bears are not seeking out interactions with people, but simply looking for an easy meal, and making sure that food is not accessible is the key to keeping bears away. WildSafe BC staff will be in east Abbotsford this week on a doorto-door campaign to inform citizens how to be “bear aware.”

Giordano: ‘I’m starting to panic’ From A1

Giordano said a three-year lease to rent the building was signed in 2009, when the Warm Zone received threeyear pilot project funding of $93,000 annually from the Status of Women Canada. That funding ran out last March, and the provincial government stepped in to provide $172,000 in gaming funds to keep the facility running for another year. The building’s owner allowed the Warm Zone to remain in the location during that time, but has now asked them to leave by the end of September. Giordano said staff are looking for a place that offers a one-year lease. “I’m starting to panic … I don’t know what we’ll do if we can’t find a location,”

she said. The Warm Zone is operated by the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley. Executive director Dorothy Henneveld said the Warm Zone has an annual budget of about $275,000 and the society is waiting to hear back on some grant requests – such as through Fraser Health – while it looks to secure more long-term GIORDANO funding. The City of Abbotsford received approval to increase the capacity of four existing water wells in order to meet peak demand for water during summer months. The wells are located in the southwest corner of Mill Lake Park. The approved pumping capacity is 290 L/s. A total of 2,505 million litres of water may be drawn from these wells annually, between May and September. For the 2013 season, the Bevan Avenue wells are expected to begin operating from early June onward, as needed.

Aug. 14, 2011. According to the lawsuit, HaddenWatts was staying at the hotel with friend Lyndsey Black and three â€œacquaintances,â€? including Bacon, Hells Angel Larry Amero and Independent Soldier James Riach. Police allege Bacon, Amero and Riach were in Kelowna that weekend as members of a recently formed criminal alliance known as the Wolf Pack. Hadden-Watts says she did not know the men were involved in gang-related activities. Hadden-Watts is the niece of Mike â€œSpikeâ€? Hadden, who runs Haney Hawgs, a motorcycle shop in Hammond. Hadden is a full-patch member of the Hells Angels Haney chapter. The lawsuit alleges Khun Khun, Jones and McBride found out that their rivals were staying at the hotel and travelled there with â€œone or more loaded firearms and a murderous intent.â€? Hadden-Watts and her friends were getting ready to leave the hotel when they were ambushed in their white SUV. The 22-year-old was sitting in the middle of the rear seat when a second SUV pulled up next to them and its occupants began to spray their car with bullets. A bullet hit HaddenWatts in the neck, severing her spinal column and leaving her a paraplegic. The nerve d a m a g e caused paralysis in her legs, most of her upper torso and partial paralysis in both of her arms and hands. â€œAs a result of the injuries caused by the bullet, [she] is unable to maintain gainful employment and will require special medical care for the remainder of her life,â€? notes the lawsuit. Before she was shot,

Khun-Khun, 25, Jones, 25 and McBride, 37, have been charged with Baconâ€™s murder and the attempted murder of HaddenWatts, Black, Amero and Riach. All three remain in custody awaiting trial. The lawsuit also names British Columbia Investment M a n a g e m e n t Corporation, the owner of the hotel and Gateway Casinos as defendants. It claims the hotel is liable for failing to install closed circuit

Their father, Vijay Manuel, chair of Abbotsford’s City of Character initiative and vice-principal of W.J. Mouat Secondary School, said his kids reached out to their neighbours in order to help their community. The kids had recently been at “Character Camp” at Mouat, and had learned about empathy and helping others. It’s a topic they also chat about at home. Manuel said that after the kids decided to gather food for the local agency, one suggested they ask their neighbours and friends to donate. The idea grew, and soon they

In about 45 minutes, the kids managed to get 171 items. Manuel snapped a photo of his kids with the supplies and posted it on his Facebook page, where the family asked if anyone else wanted to “take the challenge”

and raise donations. The social media post inspired the children of Liz Kahle, a friend of the Manuel family, to see if they could get more donations from their neighbours. Kahle, who works for Abbotsford Community Services, said her kids were aware of the needs of the food bank and wanted to help as well. Kahle went out with

her daughters Molly and Bella, her nephew, and three kids from their neighbourhood, walking door to door. They managed to gather 196 items. “They enjoyed it, and the next day we went and dropped them off. The food bank gave the kids a tour and showed them what they did.” Kahle said the kids were thrilled to see what their neighbours were willing to give. They posted a photo on Kahle’s Facebook page, and challenged others to collect donations. “We’re hoping other families get out in their neighbourhoods and see what they can collect.” Manuel said the act illustrates the value in listening to the ideas of children. “There is no politics connected to it – they just want to help somebody.”

Amazing story needs a happy ending Frank

My View One of the most interesting news stories I’ve read this summer was first published in the Surrey Leader. Black Press reporter Sheila Reynolds detailed how the daughter of a Surrey woman who went missing more than 50 years ago had found out that her mother was still alive and living in the Yukon. Surrey RCMP first published information about the case of Lucy Ann Johnson in June, as part of its periodic updates of missing persons cases. This case was one of the oldest in the detachment’s files, going back to 1961, although Johnson was first reported missing in 1965 by her husband. He later stated to police that he actually hadn’t seen her since September 1961. When I heard about the circumstances of her disappearance, my natural assumption was that her husband was involved more that he had admitted, and may indeed have

murdered her and concealed the body. While some police officers may have reached that conclusion over the years, they are trained to deal with facts and evidence. Police did a thorough excavation of the Johnson property near 104 Avenue and 144 Street and turned up no evidence. While Lucy’s husband Marvin had been seen digging on the property, in fact he was digging a septic field. There was never any evidence of a murder taking place, and thus it remained a missingpersons case. Surrey RCMP took the time and trouble to once again publicize the case, despite the lengthy interval of years. And amazingly, the story had a very unexpected twist. In fact, the story is continuing, and the ending still hasn’t been written. Linda Evans did some intensive searching through newspapers in the Yukon for information about her mother, after police reopened the case. She reasoned that her mother had come from that area originally (she was born in Alaska), and may well have

gone back there after leaving her Surrey home. And in terms often used in the days of the Klondike gold rush, she struck pay dirt. The initial June 28 story in the Surrey Leader stated that: “For Evans, finding out what happened to her mom, after all these years, would provide at least some answers to a mystery that has haunted her since childhood.” “I would like to know before I die,” she said. “She’s got grandkids and greatgrandkids.” Evans was about seven years old when her mother disappeared. There was a big hole in her heart which time hadn’t filled. She began doing research and placed an ad in the Yukon News in Whitehorse, detailing her mother’s name, place and date of birth, as well as her grandparents’ names. She almost immediately got some information, and finally received a phone call from a woman who said she believed Lucy was also her mother, and was alive and well and living in the Yukon. Evans has four new half-siblings and is

hoping to see her mother again soon, once she can save up enough money to travel there. She doesn’t hold the long gap in time against her mother. While she says she has a lot of questions, she has no hard feelings. She has since talked to her mother on the phone and can hardly wait to see her. As is the case with many people, financial constraints are preventing her from going there immediately. Letter-writer Loriann Herchuk has suggested that either an airline donate the flight to Evans or that people chip in to help her get that chance. That’s a great suggestion and I hope that someone will take up the challenge. While friends, spouses and family are all extremely important to us, there is a bond between a child and a mother that is hard to completely define or even understand. Evans needs to have the chance to see her mother again and get to know her, 52 years after she last saw her. That would be the perfect ending to an amazing story. Proud of our police officers

Re: Draper “disappointed” by comments, Aug. 20. The degrading comments against the Abbotsford Police by executive director of 5 and 2 Ministries, Ward Draper, are not appreciated. Draper should direct his valuable concerns for the homeless to the provincial government where they belong. Everyone knows how that there was a drastic increase in homelessness when the Government closed down the Riverview Hospital, near Vancouver, some time ago. Harsh reality is that many of the homeless should be in a care home simply because they are unable to live on their own due to their mental state of mind. All the police are doing is upholding the law. I just wonder how fast Draper would call for polic-

Lucky to have wide streets

Re: Letter, “Manmade potholes,” Aug. 15. How can I take Fred Ulmer’s complaint seriously when he fails to understand that we are just lucky to have these nice, wide streets. Our manholes and access ports for turning on and off water to different homes all used to be between the sidewalk and the curb. Then when people wanted on-street parking the city obliged them. Eventually, as traffic counts mounted; on-street parking was eliminated so we could have four or five lanes of traffic. Mr. Ulmer should be grateful for the nice wide streets, manmade potholes, and all that the beloved tax payers have spent hard-earned money just to have a street to drive on. Move concrete barriers

To the City of Abbotsford: Please consider repositioning the concrete barriers along the westbound lane of South Fraser Way between West Railway and McDougall. It could save a life. I have driven, walked and cycled along the route. The concrete barrier right next to the chainlink fence instead of separating a multi-use trail for cyclists and pedestrians from motor traffic is misplaced because it

does not protect all users. Due to the barrier placement, drivers are at greater risk of striking pedestrians/ cyclists because the barrier blocks escape for them and would cause them not only to be struck, but also crushed between vehicle and barrier. Who is most vulnerable along that roadway? Clearly, it is pedestrians and cyclists who are hemmed in by a barrier instead of protected by one. If the barriers were

moved over, no space would be gained or lost. However, pedestrians and cyclists would have to share the space between the fence and the barrier. The danger posed to pedestrians from cyclists would be far less than the danger they presently face from vehicles, rushing by at the posted maximum of 60 km/h. Various observers have argued the Senate should be reformed by having the prime minister appoint only nominees recommended by provincial governments. Unfortunately, that proposal won’t work. Here’s why. First, at any given time some provinces, often a majority, are governed by parties in opposition to the prime minister’s party. Why would any prime minister appoint opposition senators who would oppose him or perhaps cause him to lose Senate control? Second, the prime minister would not appoint separatist nominees recommended by a separatist government.

Senate reform is very problematic because in two ways our founding fathers did a poor job in establishing the Senate. Their first big mistake was to adopt neither equal representation for each province (or state) as in the United States (two) or Australia (12), nor provincial representation by population, as in India. Instead, our founders adopted a blend of the two which incorporated very inaccurate proportional representation by region and province. The founders’ second big mistake was that they made no provision for changes in Senate representation, no matter how great population shifts might be.

Thus today, Canada has this absurd situation: Prince Edward Island, population 145,000, four senators; New Brunswick, 750,000, 10; and British Columbia, 4,450,000, six! Article 42 of our constitution states that any change requires an amendment supported by at least two-thirds of the provinces constituting at least 50 per cent of the population. This means that either Quebec or Ontario would have to be supportive. For logical reasons, both are opposed. There may be ways of achieving minor reforms but Ian Macleod’s recommendations won’t work. On Tuesday, August 20, I was heading home to Kamloops but developed a flat tire on my motorcycle. It was right next to Barr Plastics, so I walked over to see if I could get some help. Leah, the receptionist, was very friendly and helpful. She mentioned that another employee, Jeff, was a motorcyclist, and called him to the front. Jeff just happened to have his motorcycle trailer with him at work that day and offered to rescue my stranded bike off the side of the highway.

Jeff got me to 3D Cycles for the repair, but as it was the end of the day, I had to wait until morning. Ron, the technician at 3D, actually came in early to do the flat repair, so I could make my 3:30 afternoon shift at Kamloops Transit. There are no plans to close Abbotsford’s first theatre, according to Neil Campbell, chief operating officer of Landmark Cinemas, owners of the Abbotsford Towne Cinema Centre. Rumours of the theatre closing began several months ago after the announcement that a stateof-the-art 43,000-square-foot entertainment complex would open at Highstreet, a major new shopping complex at Mt. Lehman Road. Cineplex is constructing an 11-screen theatre which will feature 1,950 seats, digital projection, RealD 3D technology, three VIP cinemas and one UltraAVX auditorium. It is expected to open before the end of 2013. Social media sites were soon buzzing with comments saying the new theatre would mean the demise of Towne Cinema. It’s a rumour that Campbell has no problem quelling. “Right now we have no anticipations of doing anything other than business as usual,” he said. “That theatre does very good business and is very, very popular.” He added that the pricing at the older Towne Cinema is “attractive.” The local theatre opened 39 years ago when Don and Maxine Gibb decided to create the Towne Cinema Twin Theatre. Back then it consisted of only two screens, Cinema Red and Blue. Many people thought the Gibbs were taking a huge gamble to create a theatre in the middle of nowhere (in the area of McCallum and King roads). Mel Brooks’ famous comedy Blazing Saddles was the first film shown at the new theatre and skeptics were soon proved wrong. Over the past four decades, the theatre expanded. In 1981, two more screens were added and in 1994 screens five, six and seven were constructed after a new Cineplex opened in the Clearbrook area. But the expansion to seven screens and the 1996 addition of screens eight and nine helped Towne Cinema re-establish itself. The Cineplex eventually closed. In 2014, Towne Cinema will celebrate its 40th anniversary in Abbotsford. As for Landmark Cinema, Campbell said it is in a “holding pattern,” waiting for news about a proposed transaction that would see the Calgarybased company take over several screens across Canada owned by Empire Theatres, including the Empire Studio 12 Guildford in Surrey, the Esplanade in North Vancouver and University Heights in Saanich.

what appeared to be a legally binding loan agreement. Unfortunately, the first time a lawyer was consulted was when the third-party did not honour the payment obligation. Upon our review of the promissory note we found that there were serious legal problems jeopardizing our client’s ability to collect. The first issue was that the downloaded document was an American form, limiting the enforceability of the note in Canada. The second challenge was that the note indicated funds were being loaned at “prime.” Many of us have had mortgages at prime or pay interest on our credit cards at prime plus some number and it would seem to be an understandable term. The courts in Canada do not agree. In a number of cases, Canadian courts have ruled that when the “prime rate of interest” is not readily ascertainable, the promissory note is void for uncertainty. The method of achieving certainty in the note is to state that the loan is being made at the prime rate as determined and documented by a specifically named institution, including variations. Our client’s note simply used the word “prime” without reference to the prime rate charged by any particular institution, and therefore was void. The cost of trying to repair the damages is typically much greater than the investment of consulting a legal advisor prior to engaging in a transaction. If in doubt, contact a trusted professional advisor. A little preventative maintenance and expense upfront can often avoid a significant and more expensive problem at a later date. The Abbotsford School District is committed to providing learners of all ages and abilities with a variety of innovative programs and educational options. As we approach the start of the new school year, we want to ensure that we continue to meet the needs of our students, and we want your input to help us do that. The Board of Education is using the ThoughtStream online survey-engagement process to get public feedback about its programs and services. Participants are asked three open-ended questions about the direction of education in our schools. Invitations to participate were sent by email in late June to households with registered students in the district. We are grateful to those who have already participated in the first part of the process. Later in September participants will be asked to review and help prioritize groups of responses so we can get a sense of shared interests and priorities.The results will be considered by the leadership of the district, as we look to better serve and equip our students.

Bus riders – new transportation requirements A reminder that there are some new transportation requirements for this school year. Every year, all school bus riders must register with the Transportation Department. Registration forms are available at schools where bus service is available; at the School District Administration office (2790 Tims Street), online and by email request to school_bus@sd34.bc.ca . After registration is confirmed by the school district transportation department and prior to starting bus service, payment is required to secure a seat on the school bus and a Bus Service Contract must be completed. New in our district for the school year The 2013/14 school year promises to be an exciting one in the life of our district. As we seek to further activate our Strategic Plan aimed at making every student in our care successful, parents and students will see some innovative new choices in the district. In addition to the innovative programs already in place, the District will open several new programs: the Equestrian program, based at Robert Bateman Secondary, is an opportunity for students who are passionate about equine studies and horsemanship to expand their horizons. This program is one of a kind in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. The program was piloted as part of the district’s Aboriginal student program, and will be expanded for the coming year. Squares host open house The Abbotsford Grand Squares Modern Square Dance Club is holding an open house on Monday, Sept. 9. The event begins at 7 p.m. at the Abbotsford Social Activity Association (ASAA), 33889 Essendene Ave. The square dance program is free to everyone on the first three sessions to start the season: Sept. 9, 16 and 23. The final concert of the 2013 Envision Twilight Concert Series takes place on Friday, Aug. 30. The event features the sounds of Ten Souljers performing from 7-8 p.m. at Fraser River Heritage Park in Mission. The finale also features the Envision’s Night of Thanks Corn Roast. A six-month-old squirrel is cared for by Sandra, a volunteer at Elizabeth’s Wildlife Centre. The Abbotsford-based centre had a busy weekend. The local organization held its annual open house to both raise funds and show the public the work it does. Dozens of people toured the facility to see the animals being cared for. Elizabeth’s Wildlife Center has been in operation for over 27 years, with its main purpose to take in all wild birds – except birds of prey – and all small mammals, such as opossums, squirrels, bunnies, ducks, geese, sparrows, finches and crows.

Local aviation announcer Roy Hafeli has been called up to the big show — the legendary Reno Air Races. “Abbotsford is big, but this is one of the top three aviation events in the United States,” said Hafeli. Billed as “the world’s fastest motor sport”, the air races will be a high-octane experience for the longtime Mission resident who has unwavering childlike curiosity for airplanes. His infatuation with aviation began after a young Hafeli, bored out of his mind during a shopping trip with his mom at Park Royal Mall, glimpsed a framed photo of a yellow Harvard with a bright red stripe. Hafeli inquired about the plane with the lady behind the counter at the fish store, Mary. That conversation sparked a friendship that lasted over 30 years. The Harvard belonged to Mary’s husband Tony, a former RAF pilot. Tony would later take Hafeli for rides in the plane, eventually allowing the wide-eyed teenager to try his hand at aerobatic maneuvers. Hafeli got his pilot’s licence around the same age most teenagers are just learning how to drive a car, 17. At the same time, another obsession was brewing. “I was always interested in listening to shortwave stations at night — when I was supposed to be sleeping,” grinned Hafeli, as he reminisced about picking up radio stations from as far away as Salt Lake City and San Francisco. After high school Hafeli took a job as a dockhand for a float plane outfit in New Westminster. He later painted planes for Conair in Abbotsford until he was laid off.

It was a dream come true for Hafeli, who would have to drag his parents out to the Abbotsford Airshow from their home in East Vancouver. “Going to the Abbotsford Airshow when I was a kid was like Christmas, New Year’s and your birthday rolled into one,” said Hafeli. Now, 16 years later, Hafeli is still a fixture in the announcing tower every August. He and partner Ken Hildebrandt, who has a background in theatre, are the only two-man announcing team in North America for air shows, figures Hafeli. “It works because it’s like listening to a twoperson, morning radio show — instead of listening to one person

Going to the Abbotsford Airshow when I was a kid was like Christmas, New Year’s and your birthday rolled into one. Roy Hafeli in the country, Hafeli spends the fair-weather months traveling from one air show to the next. “I consider myself one of the luckiest people in the world. I have brought together my two main interests in life — broadcasting and aviation,” he said. But, as to be expected, there have been some bumps in the road along the way.

right engine quit, recalled Hafeli. The plane rolled towards the ground and exploded 500 feet in front of him. The first word that came to Hafeli’s mind was one that, if uttered on air, would have got him blacklisted from the aviation broadcasting community. “Many careers have been lost that way, saying F-bombs,” said

Hafeli. His credo, learned early in broadcasting school: always assume the microphone is on. With the Reno Air Races now in his sights, Hafeli is more giddy than normal. The iconic event, which runs from Sept. 11 to 15, boasts modified Warbirds whizzing by at speeds in excess of 400 miles per hour. “It’s airplane heaven. How I got Reno I don’t know,” he said. He will be calling the show with Danny Clisham, the self-proclaimed “announcer with more awards and honors than any other announcer in the history of air shows.” As Hafeli prepares to take his truck and trailer down south — his wife, Laurel, and border collie, Hollywood, will be his co-pilots —he does so with a heavy heart. Mary, the woman from the West Vancouver fish store, died a few weeks ago. “The cool thing was, when Mary closed the store she gave me the photo.”

Hockey marathon hits Centre Ice next week

Geoff Lee has a simple analysis as to why the Paul Henderson Hockey Marathon of Hope has become such a popular fundraising event in Abbotsford in recent years. “It’s hockey,” he said. And in Canada, no further explanation is needed, particularly when Henderson – whose game-winning goal in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union is the stuff of national legend – is involved. The hockey marathon brings together 64 players, each of whom have committed to raising at least $1,000 for a pair of local non-profit organizations – Doing Family Right, a Christian ministry to strengthen families, and the Imani Orphan Care Foundation, which runs two facilities in Kenya. The players are divided into four teams and play 10 hours of hockey at Abbotsford’s Centre Ice rinks, and wrap things up with a banquet in the evening.

Henderson, who has been battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in recent years, won’t be attending this year’s event in person due to his busy schedule. But he will make an appearance at the banquet via Skype to speak to the crowd. Many NHL players have supported the event over the years, including the likes of Mark Osborne, Peter Zezel and Richard Brodeur. This year, former NHL goalie Steve Passmore, who suited up for the Edmonton Oilers, Chicago Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings, will be between the pipes. “Last year we raised $67,000, and over the last five years, this event has raised over a quarter of a million,” said Lee, who operates the Imani foundation with wife Kim. “The dreams and goals are, we’re shooting for $80,000 this year, and it’s very realistic to do that.” The hockey marathon still has room for five more participants. Having decided to travel to Torino, Italy to compete in the World Masters Games, the only thing left to settle for a group of local men’s basketball players was their team name. They came up with something of a cryptic handle: Legends and Liars. The idea being that these hoopsters in the 55-plus age bracket were still athletic legends in their own minds, but to outsiders – including their skeptical spouses – they were likely stretching the truth. In the end, the local teams proved to embody the former more than the latter. Legends and Liars, comprised of players from around the Fraser Valley who play in the Abby-Mission over-50 masters basketball league, won the gold medal in the 55-plus age group, and a second team in the 60-plus men’s division took the bronze medal. “The experience is unbelievable,” said Ed Jones of the 55-plus squad, reflecting on the World Masters Games. “You have 19,000 athletes into one city, and there’s every imagin-

able sport. It’s kind of like the Olympics without the hype. “Coming from Abbotsford and playing together for as many years as we have been, it’s very rewarding.” The 55-plus team, featuring Abbotsford residents Jones and Harb Gill, went 4-0 in the round robin, then edged a team from Ireland by six points in the semifinals. They capped their run to the title with a 12point triumph over an Australian entry in the gold medal game. “We were up by two with five minutes to go, and then we got a few steals and were able to pull it off,” Jones said. “We basically ran them into the ground at the end. We had a three-minute stretch where we played extremely well, and they couldn’t stand that kind of pressure.” The 60-plus squad, which included Abby residents Stan Petersen, Michael Horner and Don Macdonald, were knocked off by a Lithuanian team in the semis, but bounced back to crush an Australian foe by 30 points in the bronze medal game.

Spikers shine on beach Flagg, Team Canada qualify for Rugby World Cup

Abbotsford volleyballers turned in a series of podium finishes at the provincial and national beach championships, held over the past two weekends at Spanish Banks Beach in Vancouver. Steven Marshall, who has represented Canada internationally in beach volleyball in the past, won silver in the senior men's division at nationals, which were held Aug. 23-25. Marshall, partnering with Vancouver native Krzysztof Orman, made it to the final, where they fell on three sets (21-13, 18-21, 15-13) to Mike Plantinga of Langley and Cam Wheelan of Barrie, Ont. Three other local teams won national medals in the U14 age category. Carson Bargen and Colton Loewen won the U14

boys title, while on the girls side, Janelle Loewen and Danielle Wood claimed gold while Karrissa Marazzi and Ashley Huberts took bronze. The provincial beach championships were held the previous weekend, and Abbotsford teams combined for six medals. Kaden Gamache and Zec Johnson were double medalists â€“ they won the U15 boys division and finished third in the U16 draw. Jordan Loewen and Jordan Koslowsky took gold in the U16 boys category, while Emma Gamache and Teagan Boughen were the U13 girls champs. Bargen and Loewen (silver, U14 boys) and Huberts and Marazzi (bronze, U14 girls) also took home B.C. medals.

Aaron Flagg, a product of the Abbotsford Rugby Football Club (ARFC), helped the Canadian senior menâ€™s national team qualify for the 2015 Rugby World Cup by sweeping a two-game qualifier vs. the United States. Team Canada notched a 27-9 win over their American counterparts in Charleston, S.C. on Aug. 17 in the opener of the twogame series, which would be decided by total points. That left the Canadians with a comfortable 18-point margin heading into the second leg of the home-and-home set last

Saturday at BMO Field in Toronto. Canada triumphed 13-11, winning the aggregate match-up 40-20. Flagg, who was born in New Zealand and grew up in Chilliwack, played four years with the ARFC. He made his national team debut on June 19, and he dressed for the second game of the World Cup qualifier vs. the U.S., slotting into the roster in place of Ryan Hamilton, who sat out due to injury. Canada will be in Group D at the 2015 World Cup in England, along with France, Ireland, Italy and another European team yet to be determined.

their new students, teaching new units of study, and working with new colleagues. They too get a little nervous about doing a great job for their students. That’s part of what makes the start of school so special. The 2013/14 year promises to be an exciting one in the life of our district. As we seek to further activate our Strategic Plan aimed at making every student in our care successful, you will see a number of new initiatives take flight. While there are a number of innovative programs in our district already, we have dedicated ourselves to further expanding the options for learners. Chief among these programs

are launches of our early learning programs, an outdoor school expression of interest, a district innovation centre, and specialized intervention schedules at three high schools (Robert Bateman, Abby Senior, and Abbotsford Traditional). It’s a great time to be a student or an educator in our district! Stay tuned. Bill was a world traveller who loved his family and spending time with old friends. A Celebration of Life will take place at the Rancho, September 5 from 1:00 - 4:00. BAKER Jacob Jacob Myrvin Baker (GrumpyJake) aged 67 years, passed away at MSA Hospital on August 22, 2013. Survived by his wife Leona Baker children Karen (Richard) Gandiosi, Barry Baker, Jody (Don) Jones, Terry Baker and Corey Baker, grandchildren Tyffani, Dylan, Kayla, Justin, Brittany, Colton, Alexis, Matthew, Kayden, great grandchildren Ciara, Ryan and Jacob, sisters Barbara (Robert) Cote, Jamie (Roger) Allen and Janice Derkach, brothers; Stan (Sandra and Ron, along with many nieces and nephews. Magee, Francis Berry Aug 17, 1919 - Aug 15, 2013 Francis Berry Magee, a long time resident of Abbotsford, passed away on August 15, just 2 days short of his 94th birthday. Frank was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on August 17, 1919. His family moved to the Interior of BC when he was 4, settling in the Salmon Arm area at Gleneden, near Tappen. Frank joined the RCAF in 1942 and served in Bomber Command in heavy Lancasters. Between the fall of 1943 and March 1944, his crew carried out multiple ops over Europe. When ND641 was shot down March 24/25, 1944, Frank was rescued and hidden for months by the courageous men and women of the Dutch and Belgian underground; he later repaid this kindness by sponsoring the emigration to Canada of his primary rescuer, the late Hank Van Geuns. After the war, Frank had a long career in municipal administration in Abbotsford and Maple Ridge BC, retiring in 1984. He and his late wife Vera enjoyed many years at Mill Lake Estates prior to moving to Osoyoos in 2008. Frank is pre-deceased by his son John (1995) and his wife Vera (2012) and is survived by his loving daughters Roena (Ken) and Verna (John). He had a long and honourable life and we will miss him. The wonderful care of the staff at Mariposa Gardens in Osoyoos for the last few years is greatly appreciated by the family.

PRACHNAU, Carl Heinz It is with broken hearts that we announce that Carl Heinz Prachnau passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 25, 2013. Carl was a God-seeking and unbelievably hardworking man. He was a loving husband, and a wonderful father. He wasn’t a man of many words, but when he spoke, we listened. You are loved, you are missed and you will never be forgotten. It comforts us to know that you are no longer suffering from the ailments and weaknesses that had plagued you for 5 years and are now full of joy with our Lord. We love you dearly and will miss you forever. Carl was born on November 10, 1945 in Santa Catarina, Brazil. He immigrated to Canada when he was 25 years old. He is predeceased by his father, Jakob Prachnau, and mother, Clara Prachnau (nee Janzen). Carl is survived by his wife Irma, who he was married to and loved for nearly 40 years, his son Mark (Christina), daughters Miriam, Anica (Daryl) Reimer, Christine (Jose) Sanchez, and Lisa as well as his grandchildren Travis, Bradley, Caleigh, Jose, Sidney, Laura, Liliana and Ava. We would like to express our sincerest appreciation and thanks to Dr. Costantino, Dr. Welsch, the ICU doctors at ARH, as well as the many nurses and care aides who cared for Carl during his admissions. God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around you and whispered “Come to Me”. A golden heart stopped beating, hardworking hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove that he only takes the best. A viewing will be held on August 29 btwn 7:30pm-9pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 68 years, Esther in 2008, their son Roy in 1980 and by his 5 siblings. He is survived by his daughters; Janice (Frank) Kranabetter, Marion Kehler, Helene Heppner, 11 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. Henry was born in Laird, Saskatchewan on April 13, 1919 to Anton and Helena. He married Esther Sawatzky in 1940 and moved to BC in 1942. He loved farming but found working in the logging industry was his passion. He is a past member of the Abbotsford Masonic Lodge #70. In his retirement he returned to farming and took great pleasure being “Grandpa”. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug 29th, 4-6pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd; with the funeral following on Friday, Aug 30th at Woodlawn Funeral Home at 1:00 pm, followed by burial at Maclure Road Mennonite Cemetery.
