Training includes First Aid and Bear Aware as well as the safe handling of power tools.

On Vancouver Island, the crew has worked on conservation properties from the Nanaimo River Estuary and Buttertubs Marsh to Lazo Marsh in the Comox Valley and the Salmon River Estuary.

As Dawson explains, “I’ve learned a lot about many different species of birds and plants both native and invasive.

Being able to perform hands-on field work has really been beneficial to what and how I’ve learned.”

When asked about his most challenging tasks, he says, “Some of the scotch broom removals, especially in wet weather, became a bit difficult as well as the Spartina removal because of the very dense and rocky ground.”

His favourite activities include a long list: “I had a lot of fun with our small building projects,

like constructing foot bridges, installing stairs in trail systems and building drainage components around the many properties.

The surveys were also neat, examining various species of birds and turtles.”

The crews perform on-the-ground work as well as attending workshops from specialists in the field on topics such as bird counts, and forest and wetland ecology. They also contribute to the local community in a variety of ways.

“We feel like most of our work contributes to the communities,” Dawson explains. “But in particular we’ve installed many helpful signs, coordinated broom removals, maintained trail systems and many other things that benefit not only these communities but the environment.”

When asked about his future plans, Dawson says, “I recently finished my first year of engineering at UVic, and I’m planning to attend the renewable energy program at Camosun (College). I see renewable energy Cont. on Page 3

Only neighs you’ll hear are from the horses The Back Country Horsemen Society of British Columbia (BCHBC) and all equine enthusiasts who enjoy trail riding on Vancouver Island are celebrating new horsefriendly campsites and trails.

More than 25 BCHBC members from across Vancouver Island, along with an additional 40-plus dignitaries and guests, gathered recently to celebrate the official grand opening of the Memekay River site of the Salmon Brewster Equine Campsites and Trail Corridor Project near Sayward.

BCHBC worked with Recreation Sites and Trails BC in Campbell River to have the first Vancouver Island Crown Land equinefriendly public

The approximately five-acre (two-hectare) Memekay Horse Camp features 11 campsites that are about 70 feet long to accommodate horse trailers and recreational vehicles.

Each campsite has two horse corrals, plus there is a group shelter with picnic tables.

parts of the trail corridor are open, there is still work to be done to upgrade and clear the overgrown trail corridor.

In this region, trail maintenance will be ongoing and managed

by BCHBC volunteers.

The project was the dream of retired rancher Rick Phye of Black Creek (formerly of Sayward) and riding companion Gerald Whalley, who

is also from Sayward and is the electoral area director of the Strathcona Regional District.

Over the past five years, Phye and Whalley have dedicated countless hours to scouting, riding and walking the Salmon Brewster Trail.

They have slashed through brush and painstakingly established GPS coordinates in an effort to produce trail maps and make it accessible

to advanced level riders.

The next phase will include trail improvements for all levels of riders to be able to enjoy the trail.

John King, past chair of the North Vancouver Island (NVI) chapter of BCHBC said Phye was persistent in his efforts to get Back Country Horsemen on board with the project.

“Rick had the vision of turning this area into an

equestrian trail and campsite facility to take advantage of the wonderful scenery and opportunities for equestrian use that this area offers. At first, due to the shear magnitude of the project, we declined his offer … but in 2010 we said ‘Let’s do it!’ ” The project was three years in development and included extensive biological and archaeological assessments. In

addition to securing various grants, community support and fundraising from BCHBC’s North Island Chapter, volunteers dedicated more than 1,100 hours of work, assisting with everything from trail clearing to corral construction and grant applications.

Fishing is still strong in most areas from Courtenay to Port Hardy and the catch reports indicate that the bite could be even better as we head into September. At the Tyee pool in Campbell River I counted more than 30 boats in the water last Wednesday and the evening hours between 7 and 830 pm has been productive.

A ban on anonymous contributions in municipal elections is among the reforms the provincial government is pledging to have in place the next time local voters go to the polls to elect councils in November of 2014.

Details on the changes are to be spelled out in a white paper next month.

But Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Coralee Oakes said additional changes will also require disclosure and registration of third-party advertisers in local government elections.

Sponsorship information will also be mandatory on all election advertising, and campaign finance disclosures will have to be filed within 90 days, instead of 120 days.

revor Greene is a journalist, elite athlete and Canadian soldier brutally injured during a posting to Afghanistan in 2006.

An axe blow to Trevor’s skull resulted in a severe brain injury that was predicted to leave him in a permanent, vegetative state. This prediction could not have been further from the remarkably successful recovery that followed.

Seven years later, now living in Nanaimo, Trevor, along with his wife Debbie and team of therapists, has worked tirelessly to find a way back.

The key to Trevor’s recovery is something called neuroplasticity—the brain’s inherent ability to alter its circuits to wire and rewire itself. Utilizing his elite athlete training experience, Trevor spends hours every day training to compensate for the damage. Four years after his injury, he was able to speak type, sit up and stand—an amazing recovery for someone who was told he would never be able to function again.

Trevor’s recovery became the focus of a research study that included the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

In functional MRI, the MRI system measures activation changes in the brain and shows the parts of Trevor’s brain involved in movement.

By monitoring this, the evidence clearly shows that Trevor’s intensive therapy and visualization bring changes in his brain activity while he regains his physical abilities.

When the research began, Trevor had to be hoisted in a sling

from his wheelchair to the MRI bed, but by the time it ended, he was able, with help from Debbie, to stand, pivot and sit on the bed.

Moreover, he is practising walking at his home in Nanaimo.

Trevor’s MRI scans show greatly increased brain activity over the same time, and, interestingly, he activates the same regions when he visualizes rowing, a discovery that is catching the attention of many rehabilitation professionals.

“This is an important discovery,”

said Lindsay. “It demonstrates, consistent with other research, that the brain has the capacity to recover and that the brain can reorganize itself to help where needed.”

The results of this research are currently being prepared for publication, to ensure that the discoveries are widely available to brain injury experts around the world.

“While we have a growing appreciation of the brain’s plasticity—its ability to relearn, rewire and adapt—the brain injury community’s

ability to apply that information to patients is in its early stages,” added D’Arcy.

This research would not have been possible without the partnership between organizations, and just as importantly, the role of the participants in shaping the research.

“People may not realize it, but research is essential to the ability to provide the best care for patients,” noted Lindsay.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority conducts a wide range of health research studies designed to answer

Knowledge gained from this research can then be applied to improve the quality of care and quality of life for residents of Vancouver Island and beyond.

Currently involved in more than 250 research projects, VIHA is actively developing partnerships with world-class research institutions like the University of Victoria and Royal Roads University.

“Our goal is to expand our research capacity by working with partners; we are

also looking at ways to better engage the public and our patients in the research process,” says Cindy Trytten, research director for VIHA. “It’s an exciting time for research on Vancouver Island.”

Trevor Greene and his family live in Nanaimo, where Trevor is now able to walk around his home using mobility devices.

Trevor and Debbie have written a book about this experience titled “March Forth: The Inspiring True Story of a Canadian Soldier’s Journey of Love, Hope and
