Fewer customers for Oyama since bypass opened RICHARD ROLKE A change in traffic patterns has meant a dead-end for some merchants in Oyama.

No sooner was the new stretch of Highway 97 open Aug. 16 when customers visiting businesses along the old highway and Oyama Road evaporated.

“It (new highway) is almost like a freeway and it doesn’t go through town so people are driving right past,” said Owen Dickie, a Lake Country councillor, add-

ing that there was confusion about how to access Oyama.

“I had one orchardist say that one person drove to Kelowna (looking for him) and then came back and wound up in Vernon.”

The District of Lake Country’s tourist information centre at Gatzke Orchards was receiving about 50 visitors a day before the highway opened. On Aug. 17, the day after the route was unveiled, there were none.

The impact of the highway on Oyama remains to be seen, but

there are some items that have become obvious very quickly.

Business Excellence Awards B.C. government to phase in rule changes for local government elections

The province of British Columbia says it is changing the rules regarding how advertising financing is reported for local government elections.

Coralee Oakes, B.C.’s Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development, said the changes are the most significant to local elections legislation in nearly two decades and are a reflection of the recommendations of a joint provincial and Union of BC Municipalities local government elections task force.

Local government election rules apply to municipalities, regional districts, parks boards,

the Islands Trust and boards of education.

Local election rules will be modernized in two phases said Oakes.

A white paper outlining government’s intentions will be released in early September and legislation is scheduled to be introduced next spring to implement task force recommendations, except expense limits, for the 2014 local elections.

Consultation with key interested parties on expense limits will also be undertaken starting in November this year.

This consultation could lead to further legislative changes for the 2017 elections.

Big bucks helped Liberals make ‘safe’ seats even safer for the May election and July byelection

he Liberals spent big bucks to finance their come-from-behind victory in May’s provincial election.

Figures released this week by Elections B.C. show the three Liberal incumbents in the Central Okanagan—Steve Thomson, Norm Letnick and Ben Stewart —easily outspent their NDP challengers and it paid off. All three easily won their respective ridings, taking more than half the entire votes cast in each riding.

But while Thomson’s campaign in Kelowna-Mission spent the most at $76,268 (compared to the NDP’s Tish Lakes $24,500) and Letnick the second most in Kelowna-Lake Country at $72,411 (compared to the NDP’s Mike Nuyens at $51,553), it was Stewart ($67,424 in Westside-Kelowna compared to NDP challenger Ca-

I’m told several re-elected MLAs offered to step down for Clark, including Thomson and Letnick. But it was Stewart’s seat the premier chose.

That’s the problem with making such a magnanimous offer—it might just be accepted.

The anonymous writer writes Max off: “No employer is going to hire him, no normal girl is going to marry/love him….What good is he to anyone!”

To say that I’m offended by such a letter is an understatement. d I believe that if you won’t put your name to it, you shouldn’t say it.

The Crown attorney’s office in Ontario says that the letter “falls below the threshold for a

hate crime,” according to a CBC report.

The Crown attorney is wrong. The writer herself states, “I HATE people like you, who believe just because you have a special needs kid, you are entitled to special treatment!”

I take that attack personally. My wife and I had a special needs child; he died of an incurable genetic illness.

Our adopted grandson’s emotional disorder also qualifies him as special needs. Advocating euthanasia for any human who doesn’t fit “normal” strikes me as criminal incitement.

Saskatchewan farmer Robert Latimer served 10 years in jail for doing exactly what the letter writer recommended. He asphyxiated his daughter Tracy, who had spent all of her 13 years in constant pain. She couldn’t walk or talk, had recurring seizures, repeated

The Criminal Code specifies “willful promotion of hatred towards an identifiable group, or…public incitement of hatred that could conceivably lead to a breach of the peace.”

According to University of Alberta law professor Steven Penney, “identifiable groups” are limited to “colour, race,

religion, ethnic origin, or sexual orientation.” Apparently mentally handicapped young people don’t deserve the law’s protection.

The anonymous writer concluded: “Nobody wants you living here and they don’t have the guts to tell you!”

It is estimated that over one third of the adult population in North America suffers from chronic pain.

That is a staggering statistic. This means that one of out of every three people out on the street is dealing with ongoing daily pain.

Research shows that suicide is nine times more prevalent in people with chronic pain than with depression and it is estimated that, in the United States, chronic pain affects more people than diabetes, cancer and heart disease combined.

So, is chronic muscle and nerve pain so common?

To understand this question we have to look at the gradual process that happens to all of our bodies to some degree over many years.

As harsh as it sounds, the reality is that as we age our bodies are slowly ‘rotting’. By the time we reach our 50s and 60s we will all get some amount of arthritis in our spine.

Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield will speak at the Kelowna Community Theatre, Oct. 7, as part of UBCO’s Distinguished Speaker series.

His talk, The Sky is Not the Limit, will touch on lessons he’s learned in the fields of leadership, teamwork, collaboration, science and technology.

Dubbed “the most famous astronaut since Neil Armstrong” by the BBC, Hadfield became a worldwide sensation by harnessing the power of social media while in outer space.

Hadfield took command of the International Space Station in March this year, and his multiple daily tweets and photos from space helped people see the world differently.

Hadfield achieved many firsts in Canadian space history. In 1992, he was chosen to take

part in Canada’s second class of astronauts. Three years later, he became the first Canadian to use the Canadarm and the first to board a Russian spacecraft. In 2001, he performed two spacewalks as a mission specialist on STS-100.

Hadfield has received the Vanier Award, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal. He was inducted into Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame in 2005 and was commemorated on the Royal Canadian Mint silver and gold coins in 2006.

Hadfield’s Kelowna speaking event has already sold out. But there will be a waiting list at the Kelowna Community Theatre, 1375 Water St., on the evening of Oct. 7 and any unclaimed tickets will be available then, say organizers of the event.

Children’s dental health: AN ADULT RESPONSIBILITY Getting children to brush their teeth is not always an easy task. Between all the protests and tears, many parents just give up and wait for their children to grow up before instilling good oral hygiene habits. Unfortunately, that is a choice that can have long-term negative consequences, because these habits are essential from a very early age.

Here are five tips that can encourage good oral hygiene in young children.

1. Accustom babies to oral hygiene by gently cleaning their gums with a damp cloth twice a day.

2. The first tooth should be brushed as soon as it appears, and dental floss should be used before brushing where any two teeth are touching. Before the age of three, brushing of the teeth and gums has to be done by an adult for it to be effective. Establish a routine (two minutes of brushing morning, evening, and preferably after every meal) and stick to it. The first appointment to see a dentist should be made when the first teeth appear.

3. Up to age seven, teeth brushing should be supervised by an adult. In fact, very close supervision is recommended until children are mature enough to write their own names.

4. Turn teeth brushing sessions into a game. You could use a puppet as the official teeth inspector, or use some kind of timer or play a song that lasts about two minutes in order to show children how long they should brush. For every thorough brushing, let children choose a star sticker to put on a calendar hanging in the bathroom. Give a child a reward if the calendar has two stickers for every day of an entire week.

5. Most important, everyone knows that children love imitating adults, so be sure to set a good example!

Revisiting summer camp brings back childhood memories

T

o older brother, Vic. Hi Vic. Well, here I am again, back at camp Owaissi, for another summer camp.

Yup, another summer spent with really good friends, under the stars, on Okanagan Lake.

The only thing really missing here aside from you, Vic, is the camp caretaker Old Steve.

How blessed were we as brothers to share that man’s life? Wow, he truly was another pathfinder sent our way.

The old Anglican Church Camp, (known by us and thousands of other youngsters as Camp Owaissi) hasn’t changed a whole lot from the last time you were here.

There are a few new cabins, alright, and actually a really big, circular, covered stage near the water.

Some kind benefactor with a heart to match his talk actually funded it and it sure is neat.

Even Old Steve would have loved it. He probably would have referred to it as a “gal darn, knock-kneed, bull-headed, pigeon-toed stupid kind of idea” and suggested it was a waste of natural space, however from a design and basic construction perspective he would have loved it.

Plus it is great for the camp kids—and Old Steve loved kids.

Robert, or ‘Old Steve’ (as we knew him), would also like the new shelter because it is made from recycled wood.

Having spent time in an orphanage as a youngster and skid row as an adult, Old Steve learned to hate anything wasted—food, materials or lives.

Actually the new camp Owaissi caretaker, Keith “Poppa” Thom and Old Steve (who ran things when we were here last), are a lot alike, and yet a whole bunch not.

Keith is one really cool guy who sure knows how to run a camp and work with people. He is much more diplomatic and people-centered as camp director and caretaker than Old Steve was.

Keith loves kids as well, and frowns upon waste. They both have great big kind hearts even though they sometimes try and pretend different, and they are

We had no idea at the time how much both Old Steve and Camp Owaissi would impact our lives.

I guess it was a camp when I was 10 that we encountered the skunk on the trail to the cross and it sprayed me.

That ruined my camp and I was sent home to “defume.”

The last few nights Keith and Larry have joined Tez and me at our campsite for some songs

and yarns.

It’s allowed me to really see what a wonderful person and singer/ songwriter he is.

Keith just played an original song titled Invisible. It is a humbling song, like this whole beautiful campsite—a reminder that we are all just part of something so much bigger than ourselves.

It’s one of those rare songs that when first listening to it smacks of

being in the presence of brilliance.

It is rare someone writes such a song without being a true conduit type connection.

Keith truly lives his convictions. He walks in a unique league in my world, along with sorts such as Curtis Tulman, Teunis Westbrook and Howie Meeker—people with more talent than you can shake a stick at and yet so humble.

Well, I’ve got to go to

bed now. I’ve sat here for another hour tapping away on this column while the moon dances across the water but now my eyes are closing.

I am going to sleep now, listening to the water lap up on the shore just like we always did as kids.

And just like it did 50 years ago, it still sounds peaceful, calming and somehow very soothing.

It feels real good here at Camp OAC.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS are YOU prepared?

In light of the recent disasters in Canada, the Lake Country Calendar would like to remind the people of Lake Country the importance of being prepared when disaster strikes. Preparing a 72-hour emergency kit is easy to do, can be done at a low cost, and is one of the most important things a family can do to ensure their well-being in the event of an emergency.

What you need in a basic home emergency kit: □Water - two litres of water per person per day (include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order). □Food - canned food, energy bars and dried foods that will not spoil (remember to replace the food and water once a year). □Manual can opener. □Flashlight and batteries. □Battery powered or wind-up radio (and extra batteries). □First aid kit. □Special needs items - prescription medications, infant formula or equipment for people with disabilities. □Extra keys for your car and house. □Cash - include smaller bills, such as $10 bills (travellers' cheques are also useful) and change for payphones. □Emergency plan - include a copy of it and ensure it contains in-town and out-oftown contact information. □A copy of important documents - birth certificate, passport, BC CareCard, insurance, photos of family members. □Pet food.

Some recommended items: □A change of clothing and footwear for each household member. □Sleeping bag or warm (foil) blanket for each household member. □A whistle (in case you need to attract attention). □Garbage bags for personal sanitation. □Toilet paper and other personal care supplies. □Safety gloves. □Basic tools (hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdrivers, fasteners, work gloves).

Small fuel-driven stove and fuel (follow manufacturer's directions and store properly). □Two additional litres of water per person per day for cooking and cleaning. □In addition to the above home kit, it's also important to have a 'Grab & Go Kit' that is light and portable in case you have to leave your home with little or no notice. EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS are YOU prepared?

In light of the recent disasters in Canada, the Lake Country Calendar would like to remind the people of Lake Country the importance of being prepared when disaster strikes. Preparing a 72-hour emergency kit is easy to do, can be done at a low cost, and is one of the most important things a family can do to ensure their well-being in the event of an emergency.

What you need in a basic home emergency kit: □Water - two litres of water per person per day (include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order). □Food - canned food, energy bars and dried foods that will not spoil (remember to replace the food and water once a year). □Manual can opener. □Flashlight and batteries. □Battery powered or wind-up radio (and extra batteries). □First aid kit. □Special needs items - prescription medications, infant formula or equipment for people with disabilities. □Extra keys for your car and house. □Cash - include smaller bills, such as $10 bills (travellers' cheques are also useful) and change for payphones. □Emergency plan - include a copy of it and ensure it contains in-town and out-oftown contact information. □A copy of important documents - birth certificate, passport, BC CareCard, insurance, photos of family members. □Pet food.

Some recommended items: □A change of clothing and footwear for each household member. □Sleeping bag or warm (foil) blanket for each household member. □A whistle (in case you need to attract attention). □Garbage bags for personal sanitation. □Toilet paper and other personal care supplies. □Safety gloves. □Basic tools (hammer, pliers, wrench, screwdrivers, fasteners, work gloves).

Small fuel-driven stove and fuel (follow manufacturer's directions and store properly). □Two additional litres of water per person per day for cooking and cleaning. □In addition to the above home kit, it's also important to have a 'Grab & Go Kit' that is light and portable in case you have to leave your home with little or no notice. s the summer months wined down families are getting geared up for back to school and the fall months ahead.

As a home buyer with children there is great concern of where your children will go to school and how close their future home will be situated within their ideal school district.

A survey was recently conducted stating that a majority of home buyers

said that school boundaries will have an impact

on where they purchase and that the average home buyer with children will be willing to pay 1 per cent to 10 per cent above budget to live within their preferred school boundaries.

It has been said that these buyers are especially willing to give up access to shopping and nearby parks and trails, among other amenities, to reside within the school-district boundaries of their choice.

Statistics show that 23.59 per cent would pay 1-5 per cent above budget, 20.70 per cent would pay 6-10 per cent above budget, and 8.98 per cent would pay 11-20 per cent above budget.

However there are still a remaining 40.33 per cent of home buyers that would not go above their budget to be within certain school boundaries.

In recent history the real estate market tends

to slow down in September as families are rushing around to get their children back into the school routine.

The average home buyer with children, tend to have their minds preoccupied and distracted away from their home hunting search.

However, this slow down that the Central Okanagan might feel does not constitute as a cool down.

As families get back

into their routines home buyers will eventually continue their search later in the fall.

Home buyers that did not purchase during the summer months will tend to learn towards purchasing before the snow flies, so sellers do not be alarmed if your showing on your home tend to slow down and activity becomes quiet.

Activity will pick again for sellers, especially as inventory will start

to deplete as the weather cools.

They can be very economical, since they offer preferred interest rates, however initial set-up costs including legal and appraisal fees may apply.

Lines of credit and home equity loans are usually limited to 80 per cent of your home’s value.

Mortgage refinancing: When funding major renovations, refinancing your mortgage lets you spread repayment over a long period at mortgage interest rates which are usually much lower than credit card or personal loan rates.

This type of financing can allow you to borrow up to 80 per cent of your home’s appraised value.

And with today’s interest rates, such as 3.29 per cent fixed for four years,

your new payments could be less or the same as they are now.

Up to 85 per cent of your home’s equity can also be provided when insured by CMHC Mortgage Loan Insurance.

Important fact: Remember to keep in mind to set aside 10 per cent to 15 per cent in your budget for cost overruns.

Countdown is on to get back to school The inevitable last minutes of summer are ticking away. The countdown has begun for back-to-school once again. And along with it, major retailers are bombarding parents, making sure they hurry out and buy the coolest new outfits, backpacks and gadgets for their kids.

But this hyped-up, commercial back-toschool rush to equip students with new garments and gear often gets in the way of the real preparations that parents and kids should focus on for a successful school year.

“The mad, back-toschool dash to purchase new clothes, backpacks, electronic devices and school supplies often overwhelms parents and children alike,” said Julia Fitzgerald, Sylvan Learning’s chief marketing officer. “What is often lost in this scramble is the fact that school is about learning.”

“Starting a new school year can be a daunting experience for many stu-

dents, and failing to get off on the right foot can set the tone for the rest of the academic year,” Fitzgerald said. “Parents need to take the right steps starting now to make sure their students are prepared to tackle new academic challenges with the right habits and daily routines.

“This includes trying not to be so consumed with showing up in the latest fashions; it’s not that important. That’s why Sylvan Learning has put together four simple tips for parents and four simple tips for children that can help boost student success in the new school year.”

Here are four things parents can do to help their children achieve better academic results:

TWO-WEEK RULE

With later bedtimes over the summer, children need to ease back into their school routine rather than having a sudden change their first day of school. Using the last

two weeks of summer to re-introduce a school year bedtime routine will make waking up on that first day a lot easier.

REGULAR MEAL TIMES

During summer months, kids tend to grab a snack several times during the day.

Parents can start reminding students to get back into a three-meala-day schedule in order to regulate their system into the back-to-school mode. Nutrition is an important factor in academic performance, and eating a healthy, balanced breakfast and lunch keeps kids alert throughout the day.

FAMILY CALENDAR

Time management is tricky for everyone, especially kids and teens, but planning is an important way to save everyone’s sanity. Having major deadlines, due dates, events and extracurricular activities in one place helps kids visualize their week, manage their time

and stay on track.

KEEP GOOD HABITS

If you and your child have established a good summer learning routine, when school starts try not to forsake all of the fun reading, writing and art activities that kept your child engaged all summer.

Here are four important things that students can follow to improve the academic quality of the school year, starting on Day One. 1. Organize—Organization is not overrated.

Keeping notes, projects and reading materials in logical order helps students find what they need right away, cutting down on time spent tracking things down, and allowing more time for actual studying.

2. Take good notes— Yes, it does matter. Taking good notes helps keep kids’ grades up, especially in middle or

Transit service through Lake Country After the new Hwy 97 alignment opening August 16th, the #90 UBCO Connector continues to operate status quo in both directions via Pelmewash Parkway until further analysis can be made on the impacts of the new highway. Therefore, the routing will be as shown on the map below.

Southbound: Regular routing via Highway 97 then Pelmewash Parkway offramp, Pelmewash Parkway, Oyama Road, Greenhow Road, Young Road, Trask Road, Oyama Road, Pelmewash Parkway, Highway 97, Berry Road, Highway 97 to regular routing.

Northbound: Regular routing via Highway 97, Berry Road, Highway 97 then Pelmewash Parkway off-ramp, Pelmewash Parkway, Oyama Road, Greenhow Road, Young Road, Trask Road, Oyama Road, Pelmewash Parkway, Highway 97 on-ramp, Highway 97 to regular routing.

Note that the #90 UBCO Connector will continue to serve Berry Road Exchange until September 3rd.

Effective September 3, 2013 the #90 UBCO Connector will not be routing into Berry Road Exchange and will instead bypass the exchange and service the stops on Highway 97 at Beaver Lake Road northbound and at Hill Road southbound. This change is taking place as a pre-emptive measure to accommodate the expected increase in running time to service Oyama with the introduction of the new highway.

Operating the service this way will allow BC Transit the opportunity to review and monitor impacts the new highway has on the service reliability of the #90. This will also allow BC Transit to field test potential routing options and discuss these options with stakeholders. A decision on the permanent routing will be made in the near future.
