CRD looks into recycling options

Allen Langdon, Managing Director, and Glenda Gies, Project Manager, for Multi-Material BC, appeared before the board to discuss proposed recycling options for the Cariboo Chilcotin.

Landon provided an over view of the program, incentives and benefits to local governments participating in the program and the types of materials collected through the packaging and printed paper (PPP) program.

Multi-Material British Columbia (MMBC) is a notfor-profit agency established under the British Columbia Society Act.

Registry grows The CRD endorsed recommendations from its Heritage Steering Committee to include Chemo RV (150 Mile Barns) in the central Cariboo along with Cottonwood House and Barkerville in the north Cariboo on the Heritage Registry. The 150 Mile House Barns will be submitted to the provincial and federal registries for possible inclusion while Cottonwood and Barkerville are already listed properties on the provincial and federal registries.

Climate action The Cariboo Regional District will be appointing two members to participate on the BC Agriculture & Food Climate Action Initiative established by the BC Agriculture Council and supported by the Ministry of Agriculture. The CRD will participate in developing Regional Agricultural Adaptation Strategies for the Cariboo Chilcotin. This program is focused on creating regional strategies and actions for agricultural adaptation to projected climate change impacts.

Farewell The CRD Board of Directors thanked Manager of Planning Services, Rick Brundrige for his 17 years of service to the Regional District. The CRD board and staff congratulate him on his retirement.

Climate accolades The Cariboo Regional District received information from the joint Provincial-Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Green Communities Committee congratulating the CRD on its successful efforts to measure and reduce corporate greenhouse gas emissions for 2012.

As a charter signatory who has completed its corporate carbon inventory for the 2012 reporting year,

and demonstration of familiarity with the Community Energy and Emissions Inventory, the CRD has been awarded a Level 2 recognition award for “Measurement”.

Marijuana The Cariboo Regional District Board of Directors have directed staff to bring forward a text amendment to the zoning regulations to allow the accessory medical marijuana uses in industrial zones.

On June 10, the federal government announced a new regulation called the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR).

This legislation changes the way marijuana can be legally grown in Canada for medical purposes. The Health Canada’s Marijuana Medical Access Program (MMSP), which was introduced in 2001, allowed authorized persons to grow marijuana for their own medical purposes in their home. There are currently over 30,000 authorized persons under this program.

This program and the authorizations are to

expire on March 31, 2014.

Authorized The Board authorized up to $300 of special projects funds from Electoral Areas D, G, H, K and L in support of Orange Shirt Day. The board also endorsed $1,500 of Electoral Area F funds for this initiative. The Cariboo Regional District, City of Williams Lake, School District 27 and School District 28 have declared Sept. 30 to be Orange Shirt Day in recognition of the harm done to children by the residential school system and as an affirmation to ensure that every child matters as we continue through the reconciliation journey.

The orange shirt taken from one child has become a symbol of every residential school student’s loss of identity and self-worth. It has become a symbol of defiance against that undermining of children’s self-esteem, and a commitment to anti-racism and antibullying.

Karyn Ellis to play Bear’s Paw Monday This Labour Day weekend will see Karyn Ellis perform at the Bear’s Paw Cafe in Wells, Sept. 2. Her labour of love is music and she has broken onto the international music scene with her passionate devotion, quirky songwriting and sensual, naive vocals, backed by a cornucopia of musical instruments.

Equally at home performing solo or backed by a band that ranges from a traveling duo to a twelve-piece ensemble with community choir, Karyn delivers a riveting show that enraptures audiences and brings them together. People who have seen her live consistently remark on her magnetic presence and the relate ability of her songs and she is as comfortable on a festival main stage as she is in front of a handful of people in someone’s living room. The Bear’s Paw indoor stage will provide a perfect, intimate opportunity to listen up close to Karyn’s relevant and captivating lyrics in a personal style.

She is in studio finishing her newest album, More Than a Hero, and she’ll be performing new songs from that album as well her previous three releases.

Best of all, Karyn, who now makes her home in Toronto, is a Cariboo daughter as well, having spent a few years incubating her musical career right here in the Quesnel region and her love of the Cariboo comes through in her performances as well.

Karyn’s concert will be opened by Bob Campbell, another Cariboo native who makes his home in Wells. Bob’s lengthy musical career as both lead and back-up on guitar and drums, is further highlighted by his witty and punchy musical writing on a variety of subjects and social statements that make his music both entertaining and thought-provocative. Those of us in the Cariboo will be most familiar with his 25 years of collaboration with Murray Boal, most recently as the “Wingdam Ramblers,” but Bob has led and backed musicians all over B.C. and in an endless variety of musical genres.

“These are two independent and successful musicians, who, once again, prove the incredible and international musical reputation of Wells. We’re so happy to help recognize the careers of these musicians with another in our summer concert series,” Bear’s Paw owner Dave Jorgenson said.

Miss Quesnel group fundraise for sick child SHANNON STEVER Observer Reporter

K

eian Blundell, a young leukemia patient currently undergoing treatment in the Vancouver area, is receiving a supportive visit from three local ladies: Ashley Shmidt, Isla Butler, and Tory Watson.

The group, who include members of the Miss Quesnel Self Development Program (Isla and Tory), heard about the young boy from news reports and felt it was a good opportunity to show support.

Blundell is currently undergoing chemotherapy, his family making many sacrifices to be by his side. Ryan Blundell, Keian’s father, recently was denied employment insurance when he left work in order to be with his son, and he is currently ‘on vacation’ while he attempts to make a solution.

The family are currently staying in temporary housing provided by the hospital, but after the treatment, the future is admittedly uncertain.

IIn order to help the situation, Shmidt, Butler and Watson have organized a fundraising campaign that has raised more

than $200 and includes a bottle-drive, with, as Shmidt enthusiastically detailed “over three truckloads of bottles.”

Visiting Blundell just made sense to the girls, not only for their connection to the story, and for the perspective they feel they will gain, but, “after all, what child wouldn’t want a visit from princesses?”

During their visit, the three have a gift-package in mind, including money from the fundraisers, as well as shirts made proudly supporting Team Keian, reflecting on the family’s current campaign and distraction for Keian, who thinks of the help he is given as “Kaptain Laser”, a superhero that resides within him battling his illness.

Blundell, an effervescent sixyear old with a penchant for superheroes, is surrounded by a loving family, but the group hopes to extent that supportnet. Says Ashley, “we just felt it reflected well on Quesnel and how we aren’t only concerned with our area”.

The group has planned their trip to spend time with Blundelland to show themselves as fans of his campaign. Having originally planned to visit the boy at the hospital, the trip

quickly became more personal.

As Shmidt puts it, “due to infection-control at the hospital, we will be visiting him at home,” allowing them to spend time with Blundell and his family directly.

For her part, Shmidt, an active member in Relay for Life and similar campaigns, says, “I

think it’s amazing that a group of youth would take such initiative”.

After thinking for a moment, she reflects, “it was their choice to do this,” mentioning that though she is helping, the idea came completely from the two girls.

More harm than good

ailed NDP leadership candidate Dana Larsen and his group Sensible BC are set to kick off their campaign next month to force a referendum on marijuana policy.

Much like the ultimately successful Fight HST petition in 2010, Larsen hopes to use the Recall and Initiative Act to force an end to what he sees as archaic and draconian drug laws.

Specifically, Larsen and his group want to prohibit the use of police resources in B.C. to enforce drugs laws aimed at the possession and use of marijuana.

Larsen will need to get more than 10 per cent of registered voters in each of B.C.’s 85 electoral districts to sign the petition in order to force a province-wide referendum on the issue.

He’ll have 90 days to do it, beginning next month.

Larsen is no doubt emboldened by the success of the Fight HST campaign, not to mention the recent move by Washington State to legalize recreational marijuana use there.

And the message is clear: Marijuana prohibition does vastly more harm than good.

It’s a message that is increasingly finding an audience.

An Ipsos poll conducted last year found that 66 per cent of Canadians support the decriminalization of marijuana in small amounts. Twenty-five years ago, that number was just 39 per cent. It’s an encouraging trend.

Marijuana prohibition funds organized crime, wastes tax dollars, wastes police resources, and makes the drug easier for young people to obtain.

Larsen should be commended for going after an issue that most politicians are too afraid to touch.

His message is one that deserves to be heard.

Visitors to the United States know one can buy beer or wine in department stores like Target, in grocery stores like Safeway and in corner stores like 7-Eleven.

It’s a convenience that seems to operate just fine; ingrained as it is in the U.S. — and in Quebec — it doesn’t seem to be a big deal to anyone but a first-time visitor from bureaucratic B.C., where some of the existing regulations can leave many heads wounded from much scratching.

Is anybody not puzzled by the fact the cheapest bottle of B.C. wine can be found far from B.C. — in California?

Or that one can drink a beer with their kids while seated at a table at the sketchiest of restaurants, but cannot do the same with their kids while seated at a table at the most upscale of pubs?

seriously address the “taboo” aspect of alcohol that is so prevalent in B.C. When I was 15 or so, my girlfriend’s father offered me a beer during dinner at her house. I was taken aback, but learned that sipping a beer or wine during dinner is nothing new for teens in Europe.

As my then-girlfriend noted, it therefore ceases to become an elusive tonic to be abused when one reaches a magical age.

This mature approach to alcohol could be extended, of course, to allowing a couple to relax in a park with a bottle of wine; to allow patrons to actually continue to enjoy their summer night on a restaurant or pub patio without the dreaded 11 p.m. curfew kicking in; to allow busy people to stop at a grocery story and add a six-pack to their grocery cart.

The government has asked 10,000 liquor-related businesses to provide input on liquor regulations.

The public will have its say in September.

“Right now, some of B.C.’s liquor laws go back many years,” Anton said, noting the Liberals are looking at making “practical and responsible changes that promote consumer convenience and economic growth in the province, with a strong eye to maintaining public safety and protecting the health of our citizens.”

The government’s record on protecting the public has been the focus of the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research, which argues that B.C. leads and lags in alcohol-related policy.

The Centre for Addictions Research also published a report, in partnership with the Prevention Research Center in Berkeley, Calif., that argued privatizing liquor sales results in more alcohol-related deaths.

Of course, there are critics of that research and I am sure both sides will weigh in when asked to provide input as B.C. attempts, yet again, to simplify its alcohol regulations.

Editor: This letter is intended to incite some interest in a problem that has faced Quesnel for many years.

It is an open letter which I plan to send to: Quesnel City Council, the Government of B.C. Including our premier, our MLA, the Department of Highways, the Director of the Cariboo Regional District and the Quesnel Cariboo Observer.

We enjoy this lovely city and beautiful area and can’t think of anywhere we’d rather live.

The problem I hope to address has increased over the years and it is time someone took notice and will act on a remedy.

Much effort and funds have been expended to improve the infrastructure of the area. Much needed for the enjoyment and

safe living of the residents, but this major issue has been ignored.

The following letter will explain my concern and I hope [it will] cause the officials in charge to act, before it is too late.

What are you waiting for? A real disaster? Some bodies?

The recent gas main incident was frightening.

The downtown cordoned off, businesses evacuated!

All this just across from

the seniors apartment complex and the hospital!

The traffic going through Quesnel both north and southbound; semis hauling whatever, tankers hauling whatever, logging trucks heavily loaded going in both directions, heavy equipment and supplies carrying God knows what along with the regular traffic and holiday travellers in a steady stream is constant and

just ridiculous for the route they must take.

It is time for a bypass!

Crossing the Fraser at Marguerite where there was a ferry crossing and taking a western side of the river to rejoin the highway north of Quesnel would possibly divert some of the more dangerous traffic.

What we have now is a dangerous bottleneck. So much money is spent to four lane Highway 97.

It is time to think of a suitable, safe and convenient route to the north of the province.

Visitors will carry on to the city if they want to shop or visit our lovely city. With a camping facility within walking distance, a place to park and stay, travellers might stop and experience the beauty and highlights of our city. Think about it.

How to survive back to school

rmed with coupons, store flyers and a long list of musthave items, over one-third of Canadians are now taking on the daunting task of back-toschool shopping this season.

A recent survey of Canadian consumers across the country revealed that nearly one in two consumers feel this annual shopping ritual is a stressful one.

The survey, conducted by Vision Critical for Staples Canada, indicated financial pressures as the leading contributor to feelings of stress associated with shopping for back-to-school (91 per cent). Finding all the items on the list and the in-store experience are also sources of stress for many (80 per cent and 72 per cent respectively).

To make it easier for consumers, leading retailers such as Staples have equipped its stores with helpful resources, such as lists of basic supplies needed for each grade. Associates are also trained for the back-to-school season to help customers find the items they require for a successful school year, making the in-store experience a smoother one for parents.

The survey also found that good value for money is the main driver of store choice for back-to-school shoppers across the country (81 per cent strongly or somewhat agree). Other survey findings included: • 74 per cent agree that they prefer to make their own shopping list; • 70 per cent agree that budgeting is important;

MUSEum highlight There’s just a short time left for the public to enjoy the Quesnel Art Gallery show MUSEum, where artists present their work based on inspiration from artifacts and photographs from the Quesnel Museum and Archives. Maureen Hobbs Wheeler was drawn to the photos in the CD Hoy collection, in particular a photo of Mathilda Joe Alexandria, wife of the hereditary Chief of Alexandria.

She imagined Mathilda’s life story was really amazing, one of many amazing stories of women of her time. Hobbs Wheeler said at first she was just going to paint a picture, but upon reflection decided to create a three dimensional installation encompassing an appropriate backdrop and props to bring Mathilda to life. The artist wishes to thank museum staff for their generous donations and all the help with research and a big thank you to the Barefoot Diva Boutique for loaning part of the outfit. The show is on display until the end of the month.

anake Sabbarwal is a confident 18-year-old, ready to head to university where she plans to pursue a veterinary career.

However, she hasn’t always had self-assurance and poise. Six years in Quesnel Air Cadets and a loving and supportive family have made the difference for this young woman.

“At first I was too scared and shy to talk at all,” she said of her first year in Air Cadets.

But the leadership and confidence of the cadets she saw at that first meeting and the discipline and structure of the military-style organization appealed to Nanake.

She was quick to caution though, the first year in Air Cadets was difficult. It was a steep learning curve and there was much the new cadets had to get used to.

“No one likes the severity of the style, the uniforms, heavy boots and wool socks,” she said.

“But the people kept me going – I loved the people.”

Air Cadets aren’t necessarily suited to everyone and Nanake said of the 20 who started when she did, by the following year half were gone.

“After six years, only three of the original cadets I started with are still involved,” she said.

Nanake said the second year she began to learn about flying, all the while gaining confidence in herself and her abilities.

She said, though, she was still shy and

just did what she had to do, until she received her first promotion.

“It was a big deal for me. As you achieve more and more promotions you really start to change,” Nanake said.

“By the time I was a sergeant, I really cared about everything. I had the sharpest crease in my pants, the shiniest boots and I began to realize I was becoming a role model for younger cadets. They were starting to look up to me.”

With more and more leadership training, moving into a teaching role with younger cadets and recognition for the growth she was experiencing, Nanake thrived in the Air Cadet program. She embraced the mature person she was becoming and credits the program and the officers who guided her for her success.

She has achieved the rank of Warrant Officer, 2nd Class, the second highest rank available to her.

“My development through the Air Cadets will help me for the rest of my life,” she said.

“It affects me in every way.”

In this last year of her program (off to university with other priorities), Nanake had one more level to achieve. She was recommended to attend an International Air Cadet Exchange. This program is considered a reward for air cadets around the world who have remarkable success in the organization. Nanake really didn’t have any expectations she would be chosen.

“There are more than 25,000 air cadets in Canada and only 74 are chosen to participate,” she said.

“I had to wait almost a year to hear.”

But she still had challenges to meet

before her selection was confirmed.

“I had to write a letter bragging about myself and I still find that very hard,” she said.

“Then the interview, in which there were so many questions I couldn’t answer. It was about air cadets, the International Air Cadet organization, world news and they also evaluated how each cadet presents themselves.”

Nanake admitted she figured she’d failed because there were so many questions she was unable to answer.

However, in early spring she was advised she’d been selected to go the Netherlands.

All her expenses would be paid, except the purchase of camp uniforms (formal and casual) and any spending money she wanted to bring.

After a three-day briefing and introduction of other participants, Nanake and five other Canadian cadets headed to Woensdrecht, Netherlands. They spent just over two weeks in the country and toured air bases, visited beaches, enjoyed shopping and getting to know cadets from around the world.

“It was great. We were all senior cadets with similar training, despite slightly different organizational structures in each country,” Nanake said.

“Everyone shared a positive attitude and there was zero drama. Why can’t everyone be that way.”

She learned a little of the language, experienced the culture through home stays and sampling the food, made lifelong friends and is extremely grateful for the experience.

For Nanake, the trip to the Nether-

lands was a fitting end to her time as an air cadet. She knows that her time spent in the program has made her the woman she is becoming and strongly believes Air Cadets offers growth potential and benefits for boys and girls regardless of their personality.

Her sister, 14-year-old Gujree is also enjoying the Air Cadets.

“She’s a totally different type of person but is excelling on her own path,” Nanake said.

“She’s now a corporal and although flight was just a fun part of air cadets for me, for my sister, aviation is a passion.

She is looking forward to getting her pilot’s license.”

Nanake emphasized that Air Cadets is a youth organization whose goals are not to produce pilots or military careers (although many do follow those dreams) but rather to help each cadet become the best person they can be.

She also cautioned anyone considering the Air Cadets not to let the first year be when you decide whether the program is right for you.

“As you grow and learn, then you decide if it’s the right fit for you,” she said.

“The benefits mount the longer you remain in the program; it’s worth sticking around for. I never felt I sacrificed anything to be in cadets and the benefits were far more than anything I may have missed otherwise.”

As she packs for her new university life, Nanake is confident, at some time in her future, she will return to the program as a non-commissioned officer, providing guidance and encouragement to young cadets, just as it was provided to her.

John moved to Quesnel in the 1950’s from Arbakka, Manitoba. He had a passion and zest for his community. He worked tirelessly throughout his life.

He built a business, became involved in municipal and provincial politics. John loved the land and had a keen interest in raising cattle. He was a family man and most importantly, he loved having family all visit.

When Quesnel Community Living Association was looking to diversify their operation, they investigated the possibility of a retail independent social enterprise, which would offer their clients opportunities for employment, training, skill development and as an innovative approach towards inclusion.

“The fresh food business on Legion Avenue was a wellestablished location and we see food as a basic need for everyone,” QCLA interim executive director Wylie Bystedt said.

“This business always supported local products and from a revenue perspective it can be self-supporting.”

QCLA has purchased the building, however an independent entity with its own governance will operate the Good For You Market offering high-quality products purchased locally as much as possible.

“We’ll continue with Avalon Dairy products, local fruit, vegetables and meats including vegetarian and gluten-free products but also other dry good staples,” Bystedt said.

“We want to attract

widely-diverse customers and create more of a one-stopshopping experience.”

The official opening is slated for Aug. 30 and QCLA maintenance contractor Julien Ouellette is busy renovating the interior.

A new, restructured floor has been layed, the interior completely redesigned, cooler equipment has been upgraded and both short and long term exterior plans are in the works.

Plans for the exterior include painting, and updating signage.

The business’ former owners are pleased with the newly configured Good For You Market and endorse the new approach.

“We have a good co-operative relationship with the former owners who have been invaluable in the transition,” Bystedt said.

Our feet are amazing. They are relatively small for the weight they have to carry but contain an intricate network of bones, tendons, ligaments and muscles to support that weight. Problems can occur with our feet and it’s important not to ignore them. Pain, numbness, swelling and other symptoms should be checked to rule out major problems.

Pepto-Bismol can be taken as a preventative for traveler’s diarrhea at a dose of (2 tablets 4 x daily for up to 3 weeks). For treatment, the usual dose is 2 tablets every 30 minutes up to 8 doses.

It does contain a salicylate and shouldn’t be used in children under 12 and with caution in those taking anticoagulant drugs or who have gastric ulcers.

Epilepsy affects 60 million people worldwide and about one-third of those are not able to control their seizures. Research is being done on a new device where an electrode is inserted between the skull and the brain and it records continuous brain activity. The signals are analyzed and a readout on a handheld device can predict when a seizure will occur. It will be a definite plus to some epileptics.

Spinal Cord Injury BC starts Peer Fitness Program

$4000 was awarded to Spinal Cord Injury BC to offer peer support and financial assistance to people with spinal cord injury and related disabilities who are living in Quesnel so that they can participate in community based recreation and develop a more active and healthy lifestyle. Providing opportunities to utilize Quesnel’s accessible recreation infrastructure will be particularly important for maintaining fitness and overall health for these individuals throughout the winter, when outdoor recreation options are limited due to weather.

The program will create awareness of local opportunities to participate in physical activities, provide a supportive environment that will challenge our peer members to step outside their comfort zone, and to foster local peer support relationships. The program will continue to explore the many activities that are possible for people with disabilities, while opening their minds to their own potential.

Back to school in September is an exciting time for students and families, but unfortunately not all families are able to shoulder the financial burden of school supplies.

Staples launched the Stock the Lockers campaign six years ago and continue to look to the community to help needy families in Quesnel.

With the campaign well-underway, Staples employees have already held a successful fun fair and several fundraisers thanks to the generosity of local businesses.

Currently, they have a jelly bean jar (guess the number), teddy bears and a gift basket raffle in the

local outlet where customers can donate and earn a chance on a prize.

Quesnel Staples partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Quesnel to compile a list of eligible families.

Each family receives a $50 gift card to help with the cost of school supplies.

“The average list of school supplies required by each student is between $80 – $90,” Staples associate Larissa Gallant said.

“We expect to serve between 50 – 60 families with the Stock the Lockers campaign.”

She added they enjoy doing the campaign each year and the reward for the associates is helping families.

Gallant was happy to report most customers donate at

some time during the campaign.

The campaign ends Sept. 9, so if you want to help the less fortunate families in the comunity get their children off to the right start this school year, drop by Staples and make a donation.

BBBSQ executive director Maggie Bello is thrilled with this campaign.

“The Stock the Lockers campaign that Staples is currently running

really helps families in need to get their school supplies.

Forty families have been helped already.

If you could benefit from some help with your son/daughter’s supplies, give us a call at 992-7257,” Bello said.

“Everyone is so appreciative when we call them to inform them their card is ready. Thanks so much to Staples and the community for their generosity.”

The family of Ellen Cruikshank sadly announce her passing peacefully on Aug. 19, 2013 at Dunrovin Park Lodge Hospice House.

Ellen was born Dec. 22, 1925 in Lone Butte, BC. She married Donald Cruikshank Dec. 19, 1958 in Kamloops, BC. The couple lived in the Quesnel area for 71 years.

Ellen is survived by her husband Donald, two daughters; Elaine Brownmiller and Leslie (Gordon) Huartson, 2 grandchildren Hilary Wagner and Ryan Huartson, 4 great grandchildren; Travis, Ariana, Aelish and Aubrey.

She is predeceased by her parents Rosalia and Antonio Bikadi, 3 brothers, 2 sisters and son in-law Harold Brownmiller.

At Ellen’s request there will be no service, only a private family interment.

We didn’t realize the all-encompassing impact that Doug had on so many people’s lives. We have enjoyed hearing your many stories, receiving the gracious gifts of food, visits, cards, and flowers. We are overwhelmed with the love and strength you have so freely given us.

We would also like to thank the many people who have made donations to the Wounded Warriors of Canada in Doug’s memory.

It is with the saddest of hearts, that we announce the passing of Douglas Honour.

Doug passed away at his Quesnel home. He leaves behind his devoted wife of 52 years, Kay Honour and three children, Debbie Roch (Wayne), Clint Honour (Jenni) and Brent Honour (Brenda), eight grandchildren, Ryan, Randal, Jared, Austin, Brayden, Tavis, Alex, and Natalie. He is also survived by two sister’s who he loved dearly, Becky Hill (Jerry) and Terry Cunningham, nephews and nieces.

He was born August 23,1939, in Denver, Colorado to Henry and Esther Honour. This year marked the beginning of World War II. His lifelong sense of patriotism for the United States was forged early on in life with as much fervour for Canada that he came to know and love. In 1958 immediately after graduating from high school, Doug joined the 101st Airborne Division in the USA Army. He often joked it was easy to jump out of a plane since he didn’t like flying in the first place. While in the service, he also was on their professional boxing team.

Donations in Ellen’s memory may be made to Dunrovin Park Lodge Hospice House, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Morne Smit, the nurses on the third floor at G.R. Baker Memorial Hospital, the nurses and volunteers at Dunrovin Park Lodge Hospice and Richard at Clayton’s Funeral Chapel for their many kindnesses and care of our mother and wife.

Doug and Kay were married March 2, 1961.

Even though he was born and raised a city boy, Kay quickly understood Doug’s great love and passion for horses, land, and boats.

They purchased an irrigated farm near Denver, Colorado where Doug started his “ranching apprenticeship”. He loved farming the land, setting irrigation lines, putting up hay, and horses. After receiving bad cheques for hay sales, he said, “hell if I‘m going to lose money that way, I might as well try my hand at raising cows”. In 1971 Doug and Kay purchased a ranch in the Quesnel area, known as the Lone Tree Ranch. After a yearlong process, they completed their immigration and moved to Canada in 1972.

In addition to ranching, Doug loved football, fishing, and guitar music. As his children grew older, he became involved with Quesnel Minor Football where he was both coach and referee for several years. He introduced many young men to the sport who otherwise would have not had the opportunity to participate. Although his coaching style was firm and fair, the players did not challenge his expectations.

Over the years Doug demonstrated love and compassion for young people. Doug and Kay’s home was filled regularly with young people.

A celebration of life was held on August 3, 2013. Doug had a heart for the wounded soldiers. Skateboarding in memorial JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Over a steady stream of music flowing out of speakers, skaters of all ages and capabilities took to the park – the centre of the crowd’s attention at the first annual Skate 4 Dave skate competition, in memory of local skater Dave Patterson, who took his own life earlier this year.

The competition went off so well, skaters were pleasantly surprised.

“It was amazing," skater Daymeyien Brekke said.

“I never though it would be that good or there would be

that many people at it.

“They put in a lot of effort.”

With such a successful effort, organizers are now looking to the future.

"We'll definitely be doing it again next year. It gives the skaters something to look forward to," competition organizer Tanya Morneau said.

The competition featured two categories: advanced and intermediate, with the beginners category being phased out due to lack of competitors.

First through third in both categories were awarded a variety of prizes donated by event sponsors, ranging from decks to wheels, hoodies to

sunglasses.

A prize was also handed out for the best trick.

The event raised $2009.15.

Organizers plan to put $500 towards a tree and a plaque in remembrance of Dave Patterson, the namesake of the tournament, with the rest of the money going towards an addition to the skate park.

There was also a petition to expand the park, which garnered 135 signatures.

Ryan Gosselin, a sponsored skater who had been a close friend of Patterson, made the trek from Ontario to attend the competition.

Morneau said Gosselin’s performances were crowd

favourites.

“It was a highlight of their day,” she said.

Gosselin capped off his performance doing a back flip off the quarter pipe, landing on his feet on the ledge.

As a tribute to Patterson, Gosselin rode his last session of the night on the board Dave had bought before he died.

In between formal skating sessions, rapper Exile and DJ Matt Harrington from Zero Hour, kept the crowd pumped up, while the diehard skaters kept skating.

The organizers would like to thank the competitors that came out and the sponsors that made it possible.

Fun, friends and teamwork JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Football season is just over one week away, and with it the Cariboo Blue Bombers mark their return, or at least some of them will.

After a summer of running around and re-building the association from scratch, Michael Keryluik has a team of atoms, aged 7 – 9 and a team of pee wees, aged 10 – 12 ready to hit the football field this autumn.

The summer start gave the rookies a chance to figure things out before they hit the field competitively and with the small program, the young players are getting a lot of times with coaches, which helps them to progress smoothly and quickly.

"All the kids we have had out are doing really well," Keryluik said.

The atoms team is ready to roll on to the field at any time, but that doesn't mean they don't have

room for other young football players.

The atom program is also unique in that the children don't need any equipment aside from a water bottle and a pair of cleats.

The pee wee team would also be happy to take on a couple more players to round out the team.

The pee wees will start the season off with a bang, taking a trip down to Vancouver to play a scrimmage during half time at a B.C. Lions game, Sept. 15.

Both the players and parents are excited for the opportunity to play in front of the crowd and meet the B.C. Lions.

Central registration takes place Sept. 3, 6 – 8 p.m. at the Rec Centre. Cut off for registration is Sept. 7.

The Bombers are also currently seeking sponsorships and adult volunteers to help them make their season a success. Volunteers and those looking to sponsor the team are asked to call Suzie Gagnon at 250-992-0940.
