In June, Nicole Boucher said good-bye to her students as principal of Lake Cowichan Secondary School.

Next week, she will welcome them back, but as principal of Lake Cowichan School.

But the new name is not the only change for this school season at Lake Cowichan School.

It will be expanding to include Grades 4 and 5. And to accommodate them a few

cosmetic changes have happened.

Prominent among those changes is a new playground and renovated classrooms. Small changes include things like the addition to the library of books specific for the two new grades.

Upstairs has become the new home to the younger grades —Grades 4 and 5 on one side and 6 and 7 on the other.

The Grade 8s who were upstairs are moving downstairs. Grade 8 and 9 are in a middle school model while the 9 through 12 will follow the high school program.

A new computer lab is being installed

downstairs for the use of the high school students, leaving the original lab upstairs for the elementary classes.

Meanwhile, the new playground is aimed at the new Grade 4s and 5s, and a new sport court is being built as well.

Two new teachers coming with the kids to Lake Cowichan School are Cindy Olson and Camilla Bhandari.

Bhandari bubbles when she talks about the size of her new classroom.

“For all the community building we are doing we’ll be able to do all of it in the room,” she said. She also likes the selfregulated learning done in LCS, something she feels her students will “really rise to the occasion” and embrace.

Those concerned about the push to attract doctors to Lake Cowichan and keep them here might be interested in knowing the following.

One of the groups involved has a pretty good track record of success in this area.

The Cowichan Valley Division of Family Practice has matched more than half of Cowichan area residents looking for family GPs. That includes connecting roughly 2,000 people with family doctors.

It’s all in a day’s work as part of government initiative A GP for Me. A joint program of the government of B.C. and the B.C. Medical Association, A GP for Me’s aim is to strengthen the health care system by helping people get a family doctor and supporting the relationship between patients and family doctors.

It also comes with a hefty goal of finding docs for all B.C. folks by 2015. Cowichan has been acting as one of its three prototype communities, along with White Rock and Prince George.

“Our single most effective approach in that goal has been recruiting new physicians,” said CVDFP executive director Valerie Nicol. “What we’ve discovered is when you involve the community, you can put a great package together.

The CVDFP has helped the community showcase that lifestyle on a platter in its bid to recruit docs to the Cowichan Lake area.

“When it comes to recruiting doctors, they’re not looking for a job, they’re looking for a lifestyle,” Nicol said.

“It’s basically a marketing package.

With families, typically they also need to find appropriate employment for their partner. There’s information about local schools. And another big ticket item is recreational activities, maybe it’s fishing, hiking, or hockey that interests them.

“And it’s really important to include real estate agents and information on housing,” she added.

Plans are underway but in the very early stages for a multidisciplinary primary health care clinic to serve Cowichan Lakers.

There has also been talk of including a nurse practitioner in the clinic. Also, independent of the Cowichan Valley Division of Family Practice, plans have been announced for a private walk-in clinic service in Lake Cowichan.

The CVDFP is holding another community consultation session Sept.

5 at 9 a.m. at the seniors’ centre in Lake Cowichan to provide updates on the progress of these intiatives and gather community feedback.

Use conservation money for conservation purposes Dear Editor

Elected officials need to remember they work for the taxpayers of the Cowichan Valley. Sometimes we don’t see the forest because of the trees, but it’s time we all take a nice long look at some of the long-term effects of the short-sighted decisions made by elected officials.

I feel extremely fortunate to live in the Cowichan Valley. I grew up in Youbou, as did both my parents.

Our family has a long history in the valley, one that we are very proud of.

I remember a day when the logging companies and sawmills helped the communities around the lake thrive, providing the jobs required for a healthy economy. Unfortunately, we have seen the aftermath of closing these mills and allowing raw logs to be exported not only out of the valley but out of the country, along with hundreds, if not thousands of local jobs. Businesses and schools are closed in the smaller communities in and around Lake Cowichan and many of us have to commute great distances, some out of province, for work.

For the privilege of living in the Cowichan Valley, commutes long and short, are done daily, weekly and even monthly without complaint. Tax dollars that locals are paying should not be used to put a wash

station in for the trucks that are now hauling logs out of the valley. This is solely the responsibility of the logging company. The old saying that you don’t crap in your own back yard comes to mind, maybe someone (our elected officials) should step up and let them know our backyard is not available as their toilet anymore.

Money ($5,000) that has been allotted for conservation should never be considered for washing logging trucks. When you start washing these trucks, along with the mud, large quantities of oil and grease will also be washed off, potentially making their way into our environment. This is an oxymoron, conservation money used to create a potential environmental hazard. Conservation money should be used for conservation only.

Here in the valley we have an untapped, completely renewable resource called tourism.

Instead of taking money away from conservation, we should be adding it at a much greater scale.

Eco-tourism is a win-win for our environment and the economy of the Cowichan Valley. Tourists come from all over the world and spend money; money that creates jobs and livelihood for valley residents.

I trust elected officials will put more intelligent thought and consideration into decisions affecting the residents of the Cowichan Valley and the environment. Let’s not forget, elections happen.

In my opinion: Shaw Creek estuary worth buying and protecting Thanks to all who pitched in to help with our annual river cleanup.

The event has become something of an institution Parker Jefferson in our community and would not be possible without support from our sponsors and community members.

Spearheaded by the Cowichan Lake and River Stewardship Society with support from the Cowichan Valley Regional District, theTown of Lake Cowichan, the Cowichan Watershed Board and Cowichan Tribes our cleanup covered nearly the whole river from the weir to the estuary over two days.

This year we removed about a ton of junk and thousands of returnable containers from the river.

The total amount of junk was a bit down from past years and we take this as a good sign as we think that people are becoming a bit more aware that they should pack out their garbage with them after visiting our river.

Volunteers enjoyed a free breakfast before and barbecue after the event as well as some great prizes donated by our sponsors.

I was happy to see a couple of young girls looking at some fishing outfits. They asked me if these would work for trout fishing and when I said they would be perfect they walked away with their rods and huge smiles on their faces. We might have another couple of river stewards in the making, those that get out on the river and enjoy a day of fishing or other activity will come to love it and want to protect it as many of us do.

in and a diving club from Nanaimo helped retrieve articles from the deeper parts of the river. Many of our local elected officials were there as well demonstrating leadership and community support.

On my beat, which covers from Stoltz Park to Sandy Pool, I use my large inflatable river raft. With a crew of three we drifted the river through an area with little public access. About half way down a local resident came down to watch us go by and asked if we were doing the river clean-up.

When we said we were he gave us a big thumbs up and a thank you.

The river clean-up has been going for five years and it seems most of our community is aware of it and supportive.

To make it easy to remember we will be holding the event on the third weekend of August each year.

Our stewardship community has a goal to protect and preserve our riparian areas.

With that in mind a group of us went on a tour of the Shaw Creek estuary.

This area is currently undeveloped private land with forest zoning and is for sale.

Shaw Creek is one of the largest tributaries feeding cool fresh water to our lake and the estuary is very important habitat for trout, salmon,

lampreys, amphibians, elk, deer and many species of birds.

It is arguably the single most important riparian estuary feeding the lake.

Most of the estuary area is very low and unsuitable for development. It is off the grid and has water access only if you are willing to cross the creek as our group did.

Our group included CVRD directors, Cowichan Tribes, Catalyst, The Land Conservancy of B.C. and several local stewardship and conservation groups.

We were all impressed with the natural state and beauty of the area. We discussed the possibility of obtaining this private land for our community so that it can be protected and preserved into the future.

There was a lot interest and we hope by pooling our energy and resources that we find a way to obtain this critical habitat for our community to enjoy.

We must take advantage of any opportunity to preserve these critically important riparian areas that maintain our water quality and the health of our watershed ecosystems.

I, like many others living in Youbou (Area I) am opposed to giving TimberWest any funds to build a truck wash for their vehicles traveling through town. TimberWest should be controlling the dust by using calcium chloride over its gravel road for three or four miles before reaching town. This product is widely used all over Canada and is one of the best for controlling dust. Building a truck wash will only change the dust to mud and not improve the situation that they are responsible for.

Last week a visitor from England put up a $200 reward for the return of a gold wedding band he lost while tubing with the Tube Shack in the Cowichan River — me. The gold ring is very sentimental to us and we would really appreciate its return. It was lost as our family was coming down the beautiful river. Support environment not truck wash Dear Editor

As a resident of Youbou for 50 years, I am a strong supporter of conservation and the environment. I am very much against the CVRD using the $5,000 from the Area I Nature and Habitat Fund to assist TimberWest with the construction of a truck wash. This is very poor PR for the CVRD. If TimberWest wants to improve their public relations with the residents of Youbou, they should step back from the $5,000 and apologize to the people of Youbou for the dust and mud and get on with solving the real problem.

Buildings, like people, have a history to tell.

Situated on a lot on South Shore Road, directly across the river from the Duck Pond (Kinsmen’s Riverside Park), was once the location of such a house. Demolished in the 1970s, the Magnone house saw over 50 years of local history from its front door.

Built out of railway ties in the 1920s by Robert Magnone (who, was apparently called Punch), the place was one of several homes located on the stretch of South Shore Road. Discarded ties would have been easy to come by since the CN Railway (now the Duck Pond foot bridge) passed through town and over the river just a short distance from the Mangone property.

There were no sidewalks then and the area was casually referred to as “uptown.” The road itself was lower than it is today having been raised years later due to flooding during high water.

Robert and Catherine Magnone had three daughters; Edna, Peggy and Rose. They lived next door to Mick and Louise Mitchell who were connected to them through the marriage of Mick’s sister and Punch Magnone’s brother.

As an aside, the spotless home of the Mitchell’s was the victim of a blasting accident when plans to remove a nearby, unused outhouse (using dynamite) went awry. This resulted in the contents of the outhouse landing everywhere, including inside the Mitchell home (no need to explain further). The house survived after a good cleaning (by poor Louise) but the story lives on.

The building had a busy life during and after the Magnone’s moved to Victoria. At different times over the years it served as a butcher shop, library, hairdresser and home for many renters.

For a time one of the infamous “dead end kids” rented two rooms at the house. Not kids by any means, they were grown men. All tough Scandinavian loggers who worked hard and drank hard.

The street livened up considerably during the occupation of the “dead end kids.” They were notorious drunks who often passed out anywhere they happened to be including the street.

During that time, neighbour Eileen Mitchell (Hildebrandt) was hired by the Magnones to collect the rent from the tenants. Eileen recalled years ago how the “dead end” tenant came faithfully each month to pay his rent at Eileen’s front door. Each month he invariably turned to go and smashed into the front room window.

In the early 1970s the

Magnone’s residence, at different times over the years, served as a butcher shop, library, hairdresser and home for many renters like the infamous “dead end kids” building was purchased by Hazel Elves (Beech) who commenced to move into the back and operate a store and bike shop out front. She painted the building purple and named it the Biggest Little Department Store on the Island.

She also operated a youth drop-in centre in the building.

In 1977 the building was demolished after Hazel closed shop and sold out (then purchasing Berry’s Store in Mesachie Lake).

The property was later used as the Logger’s Hut parking lot. Vacant for many years now, the empty property perpetually sits unnoticed and ignored, unlike the days of the Magnone’s and the “dead end kids.”

Cowichan River victim identified as Duncan senior One dead, another missing: Search for missing woman called off

The B.C. Coroners Service has identified last week’s Skutz Falls drowning victim as 84-yearold Harvey William Sandrel of Duncan.

Lake Cowichan Cpl. Larry Olson also confirmed the search for the 67-year-old missing woman following the Aug. 20 incident has been called off.

Search crews, including Cowichan Search and Rescue’s ground team members, the RCMP dive team, an RCMP search dog, and the RCMP chopper based out of Comox, were out in full force for two

days following the recovery of the body of Sandrel who witnesses saw fly fishing with a 67-year-old woman earlier in the day.

She has yet to be located.

The B.C. Coroners Service attended the scene and engaged an investigation into the death.

There are no indications of foul play.

“Information from other people in the area indicates the deceased was with a woman earlier in the day. He was seen fishing from the shoreline, and she was in a small inflatable boat on the water nearby,” said Sgt. Wes Olsen in a press release last week. “An inflatable raft

has been located, overturned in the water at the base of the fish ladder.”

“We strongly believe her to be in the water,” he said. “If someone was on foot, or on water, we’d anticipate they would have seen the helicopter overhead. Its an unfortunate situation and we’d like to get some closure.”

Olsen warns folks to be cautious when accessing the Cowichan River.

“Don’t be fooled by the river being low, it’s still dangerous, especially in fast moving spots, and especially in the Skutz Falls area. The rocks are very slippery under the surface.”

Complaint to Town about memorial plaque response benched Not ours: Woman’s concern about bench memorial denial causes stir on social media Nick Bekolay

Sherrie Nielsen took her feud with the Town of Lake Cowichan to Facebook last week prompting 111 friends and acquaintances to share her cause, but according to town staff, she’s picked a fight with the wrong foe.

According to a Facebook post dated Aug. 19, Nielsen contacted town staff to inquire if she could place a memorial plaque — dedicated to her late father, a longtime Lake Cowichan resident — on a bench in town.

Nielsen stated that her request was denied because she has since moved from Lake Cowichan to Duncan, but according to Lake Cowichan’s chief administrative officer Joe Fernandez the bench in question probably doesn’t even belong to the town.

“To my understanding,” Fernandez explained, “this a bench — and I could be wrong about this — that we don’t even own. It belongs to the (Cowichan Valley Regional Transit) people.”

Even if the bench had belonged to the town, Fernandez said they would have denied Nielsen’s request. Under exisitng policies plaque-bearing benches indicate sizable donations from the public.

“Generally, what we do is if somebody wants to have a bench installed, we do that at a cost to the person making that request,” Fernandez said.

“The cost of a bench is $650 and we have to find a location for it.”

Classic cars shine at annual show

This year’s fourth Annual Classic Car Show saw a number of vehicles show up for the event.

In all, about 30 vehicles were parked throughout the day outside the Lake Cowichan A&W restaurant, Sunday, August 25.

The vehicles were judged against one another in three categories, including best car, best truck, and people’s choice.

Organized by the A&W in conjunction with the local Royal Bank, the success of this year’s event has ensured that it will continue next year, at about the same time.

This year’s event managed to raise about $350 for Cowichan Lake Community Services.

Campfire ban lifted: still no open burning

Coastal Fire Centre staffers gave folks the greenlight Monday for campfire fun.

“The campfire ban in the Coastal Fire Centre was rescinded due to a decreased risk of wildfires,” states a Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations press release. “The public is reminded that campfires cannot be larger than a half-metre high by a half-metre wide.”

Keep in mind that “anyone who lights a campfire must have a hand tool (such as a shovel) or at least eight litres of water available to fully extinguish it.”

They’re also warning folks to never leave campfires unattended and to make sure ashes are completely cold to the touch before leaving the area.

The Coastal Fire Centre covers all of the area west of the height of land on the Coast Mountain Range north of the U.S.-Canada border at Manning Park, including Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park in the north, the Sunshine Coast, the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and Haida Gwaii.

Riders in the B.C. Masters Cycling Association Road Race push their way up the 8% grade by Stoltz Pools Campground on Riverbottom Road. This is the first of two circuts on Riverbottom Road.

Lake Cowichan welcomed the masters Aug. 17.

The BC Masters Cycling Association held its second-to-last Vancouver Island Race here — an Australian pursuit.

The race, a first-five-win race was finished in 1:54:20 by rider Brian Geerts in the 45-49 age category. The last rider finished just 30 minutes later.

Unlike previous years when the race started downtown, this race started on Old Lake Cowichan Road near the Gazette office and continued to Riverbottom Road, two circuits of Riverbottom included the 8% uphill grade by Stoltz Pool campsite, then back on Old Lake Cowichan Road to the finish.

The Austrailian Pursuit staggers start times with the oldest age group starting first back to the youngest 18 minutes later.

Twenty-three riders in this race ranged from age 35 to 79 — 22 men and one female in the 55-59 category entered the Lake Cowichan race.

There is one road race left on the 2013 calendar. It happens at Cherry Point Vinyards in Cobble Hill on Sunday Sept 1, 2013.1

Retread summer like a walk in the park

Recently 22 Retreads did the popular annual hike up a trail by Bing’s Creek and down a logging road into Averill Creek Winery.

They appreciated the views across Duncan to the Cowichan Bay area and the opportunity to share food, wine and gossip with other hikers.

At Saywell Park the group did the signing-in, naming and numbering and allocation of members for the car pool to the hiking site. One car went ahead and parked the lunch up at the winery while the rest parked up Drinkwater Road near the regional waste facility.

Here they met Dave Rife of the Cowichan Hikers who had volunteered to lead this hike. One more round of names (there were three Jeans and three Daves) and numbers and the naming of a sweep to be at the back of the pack, and off they went.

The path was within the shady forest among tall trees and had been recently maintained. However, it did involve quite an elevation gain so had some of the older guys huffing and puffing a bit.

After about an hour with only the briefest of rest stops the group emerged onto a logging road well above the winery. Here they stopped for a rest and group photo, and then headed downhill toward the rear of the winery. Dave Rife identified the overgrown path and we headed down through the bush (and stinging nettles) to reach the rear gate of the winery.

Once at the winery buildings, some of the hikers went off to retrieve cars, while others laid out the potluck on tables set up by the winery, and entered the tasting room to sort out which wine they preferred. All agreed this was a great hike that should be repeated again next year, if not sooner. The group surmised that there must be other hiking trails that just happen to end at one of the valley’s many excellent wineries.

During the summer, Retreads have been quite active. In recent weeks they have done an excursion to Ruckle Park on Salt Spring Island, a hike up to Stoney Mountain near Genoa Bay and a hike around the ever popular Riverwalk trail starting and ending at the bottom of Mayo Road.

Retreads have also hiked up over Marble Bay hill to the north arm of Cowichan Lake and hiked around Newcastle Island which is just a short ferry ride from downtown Nanaimo.

Retreads are again co-sponsoring and looking for participants for the Terry Fox Walk and Run that will take place from Saywell Park on Sunday, Sept. 15, the week before the Great Lake Walk.

Gaining strength from those who can’t ride Kyle Slavin News staff

Marc Lavergne spent four years watching his father slowly lose his life, as a nonaggressive form of bladder cancer took away his independence.

“He went from a very strong-willed, physical individual to a person that just had to sit down in his chair and watch life go by. And that was very hard for him,” says Lavergne, ceremonial, protocol and advisory NCO for the Island District RCMP. “I remember watching him watch people cut his grass – that was one of the most painful things. He was still at home, not physically able to get outside. That really set him back.”

Lavergne, a father of three girls, says it’s impossible to fathom just how taxing going through that experience would be for a parent of a child with cancer. Trying to put himself in those parents’ shoes is what’s helping motivate him through every Tour de Rock training ride, every hill and every pedal-stroke he takes.

“I can do this. It’s by no means an easy task, but I am physically able, and I want to do it,” he says.

Ray Carfantan is in a very similar boat. Also a father of three girls, he knows how fortunate he is that all of them are healthy.

“As a father I’m very lucky. I don’t have kids with cancer. So my hope in terms of the ride and trying to make things better for kids is a bit of an insurance policy in the event their kids are diagnosed with something. I want to do my part for cancer research and treatment, so they’re further down the road than they are today,” says Carfantan, staff sergeant in charge of the Island District general investigation section.

Carfantan, like Lavergne, also watched cancer slowly take his father’s life.

“That process was excruciating. Knowing the end was coming and wanting to have conversations that you haven’t had, deeper conversations that you’ve never really attempted to be able to have,” Carfantan says.

“It really hits home when you talk to a parent

that lost a child to cancer.”

Those parents will never have the chance to watch their child experience life, he says, and it’s that harsh reality that motivates him to ride.

Jennifer Prunty, while not a parent, had her own cancer scare last summer that put the fragility of life into perspective.

A pink mole above her left knee turned out to be a fast-developing melanoma. She treated it aggressively – having it twice removed and requiring a lymph node biopsy – and thankfully doctors were successful in removing it all.

“That was my wake-up call. Cancer can hit any time, when you least expect it,” she says. “It kind of sent us for a Tilt-A-Whirl, and I decided everything is going on hold next year, and I’m doing the Tour de Rock.”

Prunty, an RCMP officer working for the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crimes Unit, says Tour is her way giving back.

“Cancer is still a really scary word. I just can’t imagine how horrible that would be to hear that your small child (who) you have all these

expectations for has cancer,” she says. That perspective makes her want to do as much as she can to raise money for a cure and support programs for these kids and their families.

The three RCMP officers are all members of this year’s 21-person Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock team. The team, made up of police officers, members of the media and special guests, will cycle 1,100 kilometres from Port Alice to Victoria next month raising money for pediatric cancer research and support programs.

“Yeah, it would be a lot easier to make a donation, but there’s a commitment and passion involved in the Tour de Rock. It’s my responsibility as a police officer who can do this to do it,” Prunty says. “I’m healthy; I’m fit; there’s no reason why I can’t. There’s a lot of people who are going through cancer treatments who would like to do this who physically can’t so it’s my responsibility to grab it and do it.” kslavin@saanichnews.com

There hasn’t been a First Nations Olympian compete in a paddle sport since Alwyn Morris, a member of the Mohawk Nation, won gold in the K2 1000 m race in 1984. But change may be on the horizon.

On Sept. 4, Jason Anson, a sport technologist, along with Sandy Willmott, a professor at the University of Lincoln, will open an exclusively First Nation paddle club with its own training centre, right here on the shores of Cowichan Lake.

Called Pullers Canada, Anson says the facility “will use cutting-edge technology to support the pullers in all aspects of their development and connect them with sport scientists and coaches through the University of Lincoln in the UK.” However, the training centre also has another purpose: to give marginalized First Nations youth access to participation in paddle sports in a culturally relevant way by not only bridging that gap, but by creating new, one of a kind, online sports sciences education resource materials.

Faced with poverty, poor nutrition, and

lack of access to funds that would provide the infrastructure needed for training and equipment, these youth are living with the after effects of the residential school system. Anson says that the Aboriginal Paddling Initiative currently utilized by CanoeKayak Canada does not adequately address these cultural differences and the needs faced by many First Nations youth.

“Pullers Canada is aiming to provide the emotional support, insight and understanding that will allow these youth to overcome many of the barriers they presently face,” says Anson. “It is with this support and guidance we hope many of these youth will be able to step forward, with pride and confidence, onto the world stage of sport.”

A short-term goal of the centre is to bring a team of First Nations youth, picked from tribes across Vancouver Island, to the North American Indigenous Games in 2014. A long-term goal is to eventually see a First Nations puller once again participate at the Olympics.

To do this, Anson and Willmott are developing what they are calling their First Nations Cultural Athletic Development

Plan.

Anson says that First Nations pullers have many questions when trying to enter the sport, questions which are not addressed by the CS4L Long-Term Athlete Development model adopted by CanoeKayak Canada and B.C. “Simply applying the policies and procedures used for mainstream, or white, Canadian athletes to the First Nations case will not, and has not, worked,” says Anson. “Potential pullers struggle to learn about the necessary selection processes and the associated events, let alone meet the requirements of participation in those processes.”

Last year, Anson helped brothers Robin Mack Jr., and Kyle Mack from Nitinat, along with Cory Campbell and Alex Campbell from Duncan become the aboriginal paddling champions for the 2012 season. Brandon Edgar won four titles in the U19 category.

This old golfing phrase became reality last week as nine four-man teams competed for prizewinning Pro Shop scripts in a putting tournament.

The team of Jim Peterson, Dave Blackhall and Graeme Cockle won first place, with a three-player aggregate of 88 putts over 18 holes. In second place, with a total of 89 putts, was the team of Earl Laforge, Gerry Janzen, Lance Lingren and Glen Richardson.

Cockle was low net with 64 while Ken Floyd, Jug Kalar, and Lingren all shot 84 to tie for low gross.

KP’s were made by Lingren and Richardson.

Rocky Wise shot an eagle on number nine, that’s a score of three on a par five. Congratulations Rocky on this rare achievement.

Ken Floyd and Tom Denninger had birdies, while Jug Kalar and Tom Clarkson made chip-in birds. Chip-in pars were accomplished by Ron McGovern, Jim Peterson, Mick Clark and John White. Rocky also had a sandy par.

Next week will see the beginning of the senior mens’ medal championship. Players will be tested over 36 holes for low gross and net scores.

The Duffer has discovered a sure-fire method of adding yardage to his drives — he walks back 20 yards from the tee and views his shot from there.

May 25, 1951 – August 19, 2013 It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Danny, at home with his loving wife Deb of 38 years by his side.

Danny was born in Vancouver, raised in Caycuse (Camp 6) by his predeceased parents Joe and Phyllis Lamont. Danny will be forever remembered and dearly missed by his family; son Clint (Sheila); daughter Carla (Brent); grandchildren Bailey, Brock, Landon and Riley; brother Dennis (Laurie) and sister Sherry. Danny spent his employment years in logging and enjoyed fishing and camping with his family and his 2 four legged best friends “Pheobe and Harley�.

Danny also had a passion for old vehicles and spent much time monkey wrenching with his good friends the Ketch’s.

Thank you to the Stone Brothers (vehicle restoration) for their kindness. Thank you to Dr. N. Robertson and all the nursing staff for their compassionate care. A Celebration of Danny’s life will be held on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 1p.m. at Duncan Meadows Golf Course, 6507 North Road, Duncan, BC. ☞ You know it’s back-to-school when photo day is booked

According to Lake Cowichan School’s Facebook page, photo day will be on Friday, Sept. 6 — just in case you want to start planning your first-week-back-to-school outfits!

Ms. Boucher (principal), Ms. Garner (vice-principal), Ms. Martin (head secretary)and Mr. Biello (counsellor) will be at the school for the rest of this week if you need help with anything before classes start.

LCS will host a ‘Welcome Back’ barbecue for parents and students on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The school’s first Parent Advisory Council meeting of the 2013/144 school year will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m.

☞ Lake ambassadors receive support from local company

ORKA owners and brothers, Ryan Maizis and Justin Maizis, contacted the Lady of the Lake Society with a great offer.

They have generously been donating bottles and cans they collect from the river to the society’s fundraising effort.

It is estimated that the bottles and cans donated by ORKA has raised $450 so far, which will go towards the society’s travel fund.

As well as showing interest in local organizations, the outdoor recreation company always has your safety in mind — they are the only rental business in town that provides a life jacket with every tube and kayak rental.

Megan, Ashley, Emily, and everyone involved in the society’s fundraising, are very grateful for the donation made
