New lines drawn in Kootenay electoral districts maintain controversial changes for BC Southern Interior and neighbouring Kootenay-Columbia.

Those changes include Nelson, Kaslo and Salmo becoming a part of Kootenay-Columbia and Penticton joining the South Okanagan-West Kootenay, as it is to be renamed (currently BC Southern Interior).

Kootenay-Columbia MP David Wilks said he expected Kaslo, Salmo and Nelson would be added to the east.

“That doesn’t surprise me,” Wilks said.

“I was hoping that the commission was going to consider my suggestion that I take Nakusp and New Denver, because I have to drive through them anyways from Revelstoke to Kaslo. But they opted not to accept that recommendation.”

He noted that it does change the political atmosphere of the riding.

“The West Kootenay has in the last couple of elections leaned towards the

he Hume Hotel started making pizza 18 years ago, and never looked back.

“Sometimes our food evolves over time, but when we started doing pizza it was such a winning formula and instant success that we haven’t changed it much since 1995,” explained Hume general manager Ryan Martin.

Originally the pizza kitchen was part of the hotel’s downstairs nightclub Taffy Jacks, and people would pop into the club just for a slice of pie.

Without even completing the first day of mediation between Fortis BC and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the company walked away from the table, dashing brief hopes that the eight-week lockout of almost 230 employees might be near an end.

“They gave us a new proposal asking for some unbelievable concessions that we’ve never even seen before,” said IBEW business manager Rod Russell.

“It’s quite obvious they didn’t want a deal. They didn’t give [mediator Vince] Ready anything to work with and then they walked out.”

For 45 years Helen Jameson has rehabilitated wildlife on her Blewett farm.

The large, homemade pens that dot her property were built to hold injured or orphaned moose, deer, bears, squirrels, birds and whatever else people bring her.

“Every time I’d get another animal, I’d have to build a pen to hold it,” Jameson says, explaining how her property was transformed over the years.

She says it used to be common for anyone with an acreage to care for injured wildlife on the side, but regulations introduced by the Ministry of Environment in the 1980s made it harder to do on a casual basis.

Today Jameson believes she’s the only one doing it in the West Kootenay. She gets animals from as far away as Nakusp, sometimes delivered by a conservation officer and sometimes dropped off by private citizens who happen to know about her operation.

“They bring them here injured and starving, and I’ll spend months getting them healthy again,” Jameson says.

“Some people will give a donation when they bring me something to care for. Others just drop it off and go. They don’t realize I’m doing this as a volunteer, at my own expense.”

It’s a demanding job that never stops. She gets animals at all times of the year and many require feeding several times per day. She drives into town three times per week to pick up supplies, mostly milk and grains.

“People see me in the grocery store pushing shopping carts full of goats milk; they say, ‘you sure drink a lot of milk,’ but of course it’s for the wildlife,” Jameson laughs.

Region gets new wildfire tool SUBMITTED Special to the Nelson Star

A powerful new firefighting tool was unveiled by the Regional District of Central Kootenay earlier this month, one that can protect structures throughout the region in the event of wildfire.

“The Structural Protection Unit (SPU) is a very cost effective means of providing protection to both homes and infrastructure, such as water systems, all throughout the RDCK,” said Terry Swan, regional fire chief. “Its portability allows us to take it into remote areas.”

The new unit can protect up to 35 structures depending on building proximity. It is equipped with 350 sprinkler heads, four pumps, two 3,000-gallon water tanks and numerous hoses. Five personnel are required to deploy the unit.

another 20 to 40 personnel will be trained in spring 2014.

Chief Swan points out that the RDCK has three smaller SPU’s, housed at Canyon/Lister, Pass Creek and Kaslo. The new unit will be stored at the Beasley Fire Hall.

“All four of these units are committed to respond anywhere in the RDCK and, provided there is low risk in our

region, we can deploy this equipment to assist other jurisdictions upon Provincial request,” said Swan.

The $80,000 unit was jointly funded by grants from the Columbia Basin Trust, FortisBC, and RDCK Electoral Areas E and F. The remaining funds came from the RDCK’s general administration budget.

Whooping Cough

Outbreak concerns top doc KIRSTEN HILDEBRAND Nelson Star Reporter

A recent increase in whooping cough in our the West Kootenay has a regional medical health officer concerned about what he’s calling an outbreak.

“The West Kootenays have had a surge of whooping cough cases in children over the last few weeks, following a large whooping cough outbreak there in 2010,” said Dr. Rob Parker, Medical Health Officer for Interior Health.

One or two cases of whooping cough per month is the norm and sometimes months go by without any cases being reported.

Since the start of June, there have been 19 cases.

Parker attributes this outbreak, as well as the ones in 2006 and 2010, to localized low vaccination rates. The West Kootenays and the Fraser Valley have some of the lowest childhood immuniza-

tion rates in the province. In this region, the rate of vaccination is 65 per cent.

“When a large percentage of a population is vaccinated, a disease can’t take hold,” said Parker. “When childhood immunization rates fall below 90 per cent we start losing the protection offered by herd immunity and this puts unimmunized children and newborns at increased risk.

So, it is no surprise that we see recurrent outbreaks of communicable diseases in communities with the lowest immunization rates.”

In the East Kootenay and the Okanagan where immunization rates are higher, there haven’t been similar outbreaks, he said.

Most of the cases reported so far have been in Rossland and Trail. There are no reported cases in Nelson at this point though there were during the 2010 outbreak.

Though there aren’t cases today, with summer travel,

the highly communicable disease could make a local appearance. Both measles and whooping cough can spread quickly and easily among those who aren’t vaccinated, said Parker.

“It does take a village to raise and protect all children.”

“That’s why we wanted to put the alert out. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get cases in Nelson,” he said.

It is also possible for those who were vaccinated as a young child to get whooping cough as their immunization from Kindergarten has worn off and they haven’t yet had their Grade 9 booster.

“For a percentage of the kids, there will be enough fading immunity so they can still come down with the illness,” Parker said.

Whooping cough can cause serious consequences for any child, but newborns and infants are at greatest risk. The best way to protect newborns and infants is through high vaccination rates — also known as herd immunity, said the public health officer.

Dr. Parker recommends that parents review all their children’s immunization records to make sure they are up to date with their shots before the new school year starts.

“All parents want to do what is best to protect their families, so it is important for them to know that vaccines are safe and that the main side effects such as a sore arm or mild fever are minor and temporary,” adds Dr. Parker.

“It does take a village to raise and protect all children. Each parent immunizing their child protects not only them but their friends’ and neighbours’ children.”

Wallet thief gets more than he bargains for Nelson Star Staff

The Nelson Police Department has been unable to locate a man who stole another man’s wallet in Railtown on Friday afternoon.

The victim was walking along Rail-

way Street around 4 p.m. when the thief grabbed his wallet and ran off with it.

The wallet owner chased the thief who pulled out a knife and attempted to strike him. Fortunately the knife hit a cast on the victims arm and he wasn’t injured.

Police officers searched the area, but weren’t able to locate the culprit. He was seen in Cottonwood Falls Park earlier in the day, but was not known by park users.

Tories win map redrawing

L

ocal MP Alex Atamanenko is disappointed with the outcome of the federal electoral district redistribution and he should be. The NDP caucus member should also be concerned about his political future.

It couldn’t have gone any worse for the three-time representative of the Southern Interior riding. For a left-leaning candidate, losing Nelson and gaining Penticton is not a fair trade.

When it comes to federal politics, this speck of southern British Columbia is a bit of an NDP island surrounded by Tory blue.

When Atamanenko looks to the left and the right on the electoral map, he can easily see recent history not being kind to the NDP in the Okanagan-Coquihalla riding to the west and the Kootenay-Columbia to the east.

These are Conservative strongholds. Penticton is the city where former Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day famously rode up to shore on a jet ski to a pack of media for a press conference. In recent elections Conservative candidates David Wilks and Jim Abbott before him, easily cruised to victories.

Atamanenko has his work cut out for him in 2015 and he knows it. His charm and hard work won over the Southern Interior in the 2004 federal election when he narrowly lost out to a powerful Jim Gouk. In 2006, his persistence was rewarded with a landslide victory for the left. It will take that and more to secure a victory on the new map.

But Atamanenko’s fight against the reconfigured ridings was not an effort to save his political hide. His fight was supported by many political and business leaders in the Nelson-Trail-Castlegar area. Slicing off Nelson from the other two communities makes little sense and the fight was a multi-pronged effort.

We have a West Kootenay identity and though we may spar with our closest neighbours from time to time, we are family. Now that Nelson has been fostered out to the east, at least a part of that bond has been broken.

Summer safety is essential

hope everyone is having a good safe summer. I worked for the Ministry of Transportation and Highways for a number of years,where one of my duties was to be a member of the Ministry Health and Safety Committee. The City of Nelson has a program to improve sidewalks, roads and intersection safety, but it also takes the participation of the public to be aware on the streets, roads and railway crossings in and around Nelson.

As I travel around the city, I notice a number of drivers who do a rolling pass at the stop signs, which could result in a serious accident. Many drivers travel too fast on city streets and may not be fully aware of pedestrians, bikes and slower drivers.

Pedestrians could also be more aware when crossing streets, sidewalk and railway crossings, looking both ways and wear visible clothing at night. It has been recently noted in the media that a number of people have headphones on, listening to music or texting on their smart phones, so that they do not hear sounds around them and aren’t aware of the traffic. A few people around the province have been injured or killed walking along railway tracks or crossing roads in front of oncoming traffic. People need to pay attention at railway crossings as well.

in front of an oncoming train, not a smart idea if they tripped and fell.

I just recently volunteered on the MS West Kootenay Bike Ride around the glacier and most of the bike riders put on the flashing light on their bikes which was supplied by the MS organizing committee. People that ride road (pedal) bikes do not realize how difficult it is for drivers to see them on a dark day or in the shade on a sunny day especially if they wear dark clothing.

Drivers need to be aware of road bike riders as well, and bike riders need to ride single file and close to the road shoulder. Safety on sidewalk crossings, streets, roads and railway crossing takes the participation of everyone from pedestrians, pedal bikes, motor bikes and vehicle operators. A young driver’s vehicle was clipped by an oncoming train at a railway crossing in the Lower Mainland

because, it was speculated, that he had the music so loud in his vehicle he didn’t hear the train operator blow the whistle.

I also volunteer as an operator on the Streetcar for the Nelson Electric Tramway Society. Operating the Streetcar through the Chahko Mika Mall parking lot can be challenging. Pedestrians and vehicle drivers should be aware that the streetcar, even in top mechanical shape, cannot stop as fast as a modern road vehicle.

In September, local schools will be back in session along with increased enforcement of playground and school zones speed limits. I have always contended that our local playground and school zones could be better marked to allow vehicle drivers to be more aware of these areas when the students returning to school and are crossing the crosswalks. Drivers

need to be aware of the speed limits for safety of students, as well, if caught speeding, the result comes with a serious fine. Winter will be back in a few of months which adds more challenges on the city streets and roads.

So again I hope people have a safe summer, fall and winter in and around Nelson. When I worked for Ministry of Transportation and Highways, the ministry had a saying, “safety first” as a consideration for all work, whether in the office or out in the field. Fortunately we had not had many serious incidents in and around Nelson. It pays to be safety aware in more ways than one, while walking, pedaling or operating a motor vehicle.

Where’s Christy and Mary?

Open letter to Premier Christy Clark and Minister of Environment Mary Polak.

Over four weeks ago 33,000 litres of jet fuel was dumped into out rivers systems out here in the hinterlands. Not sure if you heard about it yet. There was brief message from Mary, she may visit the site in September — seven weeks after the spill.

I thought you should know that British Columbia citizens are still not able to live in their homes, their water has been contaminated, the jet fuel clean up on the shores and river was never completed and the data collected is in question.

The company, Executive Flight Centre, responsible for the accident has determined that since all BC regulations have been met, they are done.

It is truly amazing they could complete their work in such a short time. Although it appears that they have missed some areas. They suggested

that volunteers could do the follow up work.

Why are officials saying spill impact over?

Re: Nelson Star story “Lemon Creek fuel spill data released” August 21, 2013.

Reading the spill data article one would think that the environment and the people on the rivers are in the clear after last month’s jet fuel spill.

This past weekend I visited a home on Lemon Creek, the family of which remains displaced due to contamination of their well water. The smell of fuel still pervades

the creekside air beside their house.

I was fortunate to meet some of the good people working on the cleanup effort of Lemon Creek. I was shown floating booms with absorbent pads, and followed with interest the descriptions of how they are overturning almost every rock in the riverbed to free up the black waxy globules trapped there.

Alarmingly, this material floats for a short time but

then inexorably sinks again. I was sobered by the difficulty of the task at hand, and the undeniable long term effects to this mountain creek.

It is upsetting, though not entirely surprising that this accident happened; as humans we screw up sometimes.

What is less forgivable is placating officials telling us the issue is over.

Community Events Kootenay Pride weekend begins with Meet ‘n’ Greet barbecue dinner at Finley’s Irish Pub in Nelson on Friday, August 30. “We’ll see what the people say in 2015 and I look forward to serving the people of the West Kootenay and I believe it will be a great fit.”

The Federal Electoral Boundaries Commission released its report on the redrawn

federal electoral map of the province last week. The independent commission was assembled in February 2012 to redraw the boundaries to contain roughly equal numbers of people in each, with separate commissions of three people in each province.

Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko was not happy about the changes.

“When the commission held their hearings, the overwhelming number of people that appeared before the commission did not agree with their initial proposal,” Atamanenko told the Cranbrook Townsman. “In this area, 99 per cent of the people wanted Nelson to stay with Castlegar and Trail, because of the idea that we all work together as com-

munities of interest. So that’s a disappointment that Nelson, Salmo, Kaslo and that area will no longer be a part of this riding.”

Atamanenko said he supposes it changes the dynamics of his riding as they have removed Princeton and Keremeos and added Penticton.

“The dynamics are changed, we’ve got what I would call a major city [Penticton] by our standards in this riding now that will have to be serviced by the MP in the next election,” he said. “It makes it difficult. A lot more difficult I would say.”

Atamanenko said the commission was focused on the numbers and decided to even out them out at around 100,000 without taking into account other factors.

“My point has al-

ways been, if you’re going to increase the numbers riding wise, increase them in urban areas where it’s only another city block or two,” he said. “We always seem to get hammered in rural BC with these things.”

Doug Ormond

It is with deep sadness the family of Douglas Patrick Ormond wishes to announce his passing on August, 20, 2013. He was predeceased by his son Patrick Dewart in 1991 and his brother Phillip in 2012.

Born on August 10, 1935 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, he grew up on the family farm on Mira Road . He moved to Nakusp, British Columbia in 1955 where he worked in the logging industry and met and married his best friend and the love of his life, Margaret.

While working in the logging industry he completed courses to pursue his future career in local government.

Doug was the municipal clerk/treasurer for 9 years in Golden, BC, the Chief Administrative Officer in Fort St. John, BC for 2 years, and then the City of Nelson for 20 years where he retired in 1995, at which time he was granted Freedom of the City by Nelson City Council.

Doug’s job philosophy was to maintain the highest ideals of honour and integrity in personal and public relationships and to conduct his private and public life to be an example to his fellow citizens.

Doug served on a number of community organizations throughout his career including Hospital Boards and Societies in Golden and Nelson and the Nelson Police Board. He was also a Charter member of the Daybreak Rotary Club of Nelson. Following his retirement, Doug served on the Board of Referees for the Canadian Employment Insurance Commission.

Douglas was a humble, gentle, patient man who greatly loved spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and could always be counted on as a calming influence and provider of sage advice.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years Margaret , his sisters Mamie and Margie and his brother Edmund, his children Bruce (Patsy), Leslea (Robert), Liz (Dave), Erin (Mark), his grandchildren Kara (Jacky), Chris (Jen), Meagan ( Dylan), Stuart, Hannah and Ruby, and his great grandson Oscar.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Ingeborg (Inga) Frass (nee Loennecke) January 10, 1925- August 7, 2013 Inga was born in Northern Germany (Grafelde) on Jan. 10 1925 and grew up in a small community, Syke, near Bremen. Her father was a high school teacher. He was very hard working, and raised rabbits, silkworms and kept bees. He tended a large forest garden.

Inga’s mother sewed, embroidered, knit, cooked and kept house for her growing family.

Inga was the eldest of seven children, and was always busy babysitting. Her very kind and much loved mother died when Inga was only 15. After that, Inga had to take on a lot more household responsibilities.

Inga did her nurse’s training in Tuebingen. It was during the war, so she recalled always being hungry and tired. The nurses often had to move all our patients into the hospital basement because of nightly air raids.

After the war, Inga spent 5 years in England in Wolverhamptom.

She studied midwifery and worked as a midwife. She really enjoyed these years and delivered over 1,000 English babies. Inga often visited London’s art galleries and museums during this time. Inga then returned to Germany and did sick children’s nursing in Bremen.

In 1956 she decided to emigrate to Canada. Inga found a nursing position in St. Cathrine’s , Ontario, and she left Germany by boat with one suitcase and 20$.

In St. Cathrines Inga worked in the maternity ward. After a few years she moved to Edmonton and nursed there. She soon became head nurse of a maternity ward.

Inga met Michael Frass at the home of mutual friends in Edmonton. They began corresponding, and decided to marry. Michael did not want to come to Edmonton, so Inga moved to the Kootenays to marry Michael. She worked at Castlegar’s hospital, and later at KLDH after moving to Nelson. Inga was not able to transfer her RN credentials directly from Alberta to BC, and it took some years before she became an RN in BC. Inga chose to work at Mt. St. Francis’ hospital since she could get a part - time position there when her children were small. She stayed there until her retirement.

Michael and Inga bought a house on 614 Latimer St. They had 2 children, Chris and Hanna. Michael worked at the CPR, and was tragically killed in an accident in 1966 when the children were very small. As a widow with 2 children, Inga worked very hard and had to be very thrifty. She was grateful to her neighbors on Latimer ST for their kindness during this time. The family later moved to West Gore St. in Rosemont when the children started school.

Over the years, Inga was very busy working, raising 2 children, caring for her beautiful garden, canning and preserving, doing needlework, reading many books, doing crossword puzzles, listening to CBC radio and feeding birds. Inga loved growing medicinal herbs. She continued doing a lot of handicrafts and gardening after retirement. Inga really kept herself active and busy with all her hobbies. She was a member of the rock club, and used to volunteer at the IODE. She went to the Lutheran Church. Inga was a bit shy, but very well read and well informed.

Inga worked hard all of her active life, and took pride in what she had achieved. Though she was a single parent (widow), Inga went without herself in order to save for Chris, Hanna and her grandchildren. She helped them as she could. She was proud to give Chris and Hanna property and to be able pay to build Chris’ house. She was a very fair and unselfishly loyal mother. She cared for and loved us deeply. Her children and grandchildren always came first. We were always in her thoughts and on her mind. She worked so hard for us, and did what she could for us. We are deeply grateful.

Our dear mom was very independent until a sudden stroke May 2011. After her stroke Inga understood her surroundings, but had difficulty expressing herself (expressive aphasia and dyspraxia). She still loved to see friends and family and loved watching good movies, the news, soccer, nature and science programs. She liked puzzles and looking at books. She especially appreciated books about geology, rocks and minerals. After her stroke, Inga had a beautiful smile, and though she could not speak, her beautiful smiles brightened our days and our lives. During the last 2 years of her life, Inga was dearly cared for by the Staff of Jubilee Manor. She passed away on August 7th 2013. Inga was much loved, and she will be missed so much.

Inga is survived by her grandchildren Chad Frass and Elise Tesling; Her children Chris Frass and Hanna Tesling and their partners; Her brothers, sisters and in-laws in Germany Hilde, Wolfgang and Lore, Gerhard and Annemarie, Herman (surname Loennecke) and Helga and Juergen Richter Loennecke. She is survived by her nieces, nephews and their families.

Inga was predeceased by her husband Michael Frass and his immediate family, her grandson Tyler Frass, her sister Irmgard Loennecke, her parents Herman and Marta Loennecke (Brauns). It comforts us that she is with these loved ones now.

Inga will be missed very much by her children, grandchildren, relatives and friends. Our Oma and Mami has passed on. Our hearts are broken, and we long for her beautiful smiles. Granddaughter Elise (5) says: I want to kiss my Oma and snuggle with her! My little Oma died and I miss her!

We will hold a memorial ceremony for Inga in October 2013, date TBA. She wished to be cremated. She will also have a memorial ceremony in Syke, Germany (where she grew up). Her urn will be interred at a later date awaiting relatives from Germany who wish to attend her funeral.

The 18th annual Fat Tire Festival kicked off in Nelson with a bike parade down Baker Street on Friday evening, followed by competitions like the slow race and last wheelie standing. The festivities continued throughout the weekend with recreational group rides on Saturday and the Morning Mountain Madness on Sunday with bikers of all ages taking part. Sunday morning was crosscountry and the afternoon reserved for the more raucous downhill races.

Spectators lined the course to cheer on the two-wheeled daredevils who cut through the dusty trails in search of the finish line. More photos on Page B2 and online at nelsonstar.com.

Ferry Captain Retires

Captain MacKinnon’s final Kootenay Lake run celebrated SUBMITTED Special to the Nelson Star

After an incredible career on Kootenay Lake that spanned almost four decades, Captain Don MacKinnon retired this past spring.

On his last trip across Kootenay Lake as captain on May 9, MacKinnon’s family joined him on the MV Balfour.

“We paraded onto the ferry with the banner and balloons when all the traffic had loaded,” said MacKinnon’s sister Laurie Pollard.

“I think he was a little surprised or perhaps embarrassed with our goofiness as we rode the ferry with him for his last trip.”

MacKinnon’s crew came down on the deck for pictures. There were many honks and cheers of congratulations both ways.

When they returned to Balfour, the next crew was there whistling and cheering the mainstay of the Kootenay Lake ferry system.

“After a goodbye to his friends and workmates we headed up the ramp again in full parade with him in the lead,” said Pollard.

“Many more of his friends and fellow workmates met us at the Dock and Duck for a celebratory cheer.”

MacKinnon’s dedication to keeping traffic moving across the lake is cemented in the fact he worked all 37 years without a single sick day.

Travelling the lake is in MacKinnon’s blood. His grandfather — Captain Malcolm MacKinnon — was one of the last captains of the SS Nasookin and was on board when the MV Anscomb went on her first voyage from Nelson to Balfour.

Other notable moments in

Captain Don MacKinnon’s career on Kootenay Lake include being behind the controls during the MV Anscomb’s final voyage before it was sold and taking the Osprey 2000 on her very first trip in service.

Other than his time on the water, MacKinnon is active in the

community with air search and rescue, he is an avid diver and keeps busy running a small farm.

On July 21 there was a more official retirement party for MacKinnon at Sunshine Bay Park that included a large gathering of family, friends and crew.

Nelson CARES Society has released a Request for Proposals inviting local and regional community organizations to submit proposals to manage the first project to emerge from the work of the Age Friendly Community initiative. The new project — Kootenay Seniors — will be a coordination and information hub for seniors and their support networks, as well as for seniors’ service providers.

The project is part of a three year initiative led by the society, funded by Osprey Community Foundation and Columbia Basin Trust, and guided by an Advisory Committee of regional service providers and community members. Its aims are to: 1) define an age friendly community; 2) develop a model of community collaboration; 3) identify gaps in services and barriers to accessing

existing services; and, 4) develop and fund a network of services for seniors that will address the identified gaps and barriers.

The lead organization will be responsible for managing all aspects of the project, which includes an interactive website with searchable database and mapping function. In addition to providing information to seniors, the project will enhance community collaboration, offering support and coordination for service providers and facilitating multi-sectoral dialogues to address emerging issues.

Drunk woman bites bouncer Nelson Star Staff

For the second time in as many weeks, a nightclub bouncer was bit by an intoxicated patron.

The most recent incident occurred early Sunday morning, around 1:45 a.m. A 27-year-

old woman visiting Nelson attacked a bouncer after she was was denied entry into a local night spot for being too intoxicated.

Staff at the bar restrained the woman, as well as her partner who attempted to assist her.

Both were arrested for assault and causing a disturbance.

They were released to travel home, but must return to Nelson for a court date on September 10.

Police didn’t say how badly injured the bouncer was.

Last weekend a 23-year-old woman — also a visitor in Nelson — bit a bouncer at a different local nightclub.

Yvonne Vanens Munro

Douglas Noblet Douglas is 22 and has lived in Nelson for 16 years. He enjoys exploring the wilderness with skis, hiking boots, a motorcycle, paraglider, or airplane! Flying gives Douglas a unique perspective on the Kootenays.

He learned to fly a paraglider in Ymir at age 15, then a powered paraglider, and eventually earning his fixed wing private pilot license with his dad as instructor.

The images Douglas is showcasing during ArtWalk are the result of several years of aerial exploring in the West Kootenays. Sometimes waking up very early morning to be ready for takeoff before sunrise, other times landing as day turns to night.

Douglas’s work can be seen at Greenlight Communications (560 Baker Street) during ArtWalk, on now until August 31

Yvonne’s parents emigrated from Holland and landed in Nova Scotia, and the following year she was born. She was raised on the west coast with her two sisters and brother, and theirs was a rough and tumble and tumultuous childhood. They built forts, trapped rabbits, fished, watched their parents fight, then divorce, and went for long explorations in old forests.

When Yvonne wasn’t outside she would read or draw. In high school and college art class was her little place of peace, away from the angst of growing up. She grew up, married, and had two great kids, who have also had a rough and tumble, and tumultuous childhood. They moved to the Kootenays, and eventually their father and Yvonne went their different ways.

Yvonne studied at Emily Carr, through an outreach program here in the Kootenays.

She spent a year at the University of Victoria, and then moved to Toronto for two years. Back in Nelson, she took classes through the Oxygen Centre and the Kootenay School of Arts.

Supporters of the Jumbo Wild democracy camp rallied at Nelson City Hall on Friday evening, then marched down Baker Street to MarketFest and talked about their cause on the festival stage. Whether you’re repairing or replacing the roof, fall is a great time of year to dust off the ladder and get some work done on your roof for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, fall is ideal for roof work because you won’t have to be up on the roof with the summer heat bearing down on you. This can make the project move along more quickly, which is especially beneficial if you are paying laborers to work on the roof. The fewer hours workers are fixing your roof, the less you will be paying in labor costs.

In addition, fixing up the roof in the fall ensures those winter storms, be it rain or snow, won’t find their way into your home via leaks. A leaky roof in winter is hard to fix, as the roof surface could be treacherous in the winter and winter winds can make it dangerous to be up on the roof at all. Addressing leaks in the fall can prevent damage to your home’s interior, which can mount up if a leaky roof is not addressed until the following spring.

Window work When the weather outside gets frightful, poorly insulated windows can allow cold air into the home. That often has a trickle-down effect on finances, forcing you to turn up the thermostat in an attempt to offset the cold air pouring into the home. Whether you need your windows replaced or simply need to patch up any leaks, a proactive approach to leaky or older windows in the fall can save you from unnecessarily high heating bills come the winter. Addressing leaky windows also makes a home more comfortable for its inhabitants.

Fall is the ideal time to address a home’s windows because the temperature outside tends to be pleasant. This means you likely won’t have to make much of an effort to offset the elements, and open windows in the fall won’t make your home’s interior very hot or cold like they might if you were to tackle the project during the summer or winter.

Fixing the floors Wood flooring is a hot commodity for many homeowners. But not all flooring can be added to a home at any time of year. That’s because certain types of flooring employ adhesives that need temperatures inside the home to be within a certain range, and that range is often within 70o to 80o F, which makes fall a great time to install such floors. Colder temperatures can make it difficult for the flooring to dry and bond, which will prove problematic down the road.

What’s more, many people entertain friends and family come late fall and into the holiday season, and it can be difficult to do so if you are busy installing new flooring.

Painting projects Painting is another home improvement project that seems tailor-made for fall. A fresh coat of paint or a new color scheme around the house can give a home an entirely new look and feel. But paint can be pungent and the aromas may last if it’s applied at a time of year when it can’t dry while the windows are wide open. Paint fumes inside a home can make the home uninhabitable, but painting at a time of year like the fall, when you can keep the windows open during and after the project, can help air the home out.

But interior painting isn’t the only painting project homeowners can tackle in the fall. Many exterior paints are temperature-sensitive and need the temperature outside to be above 40o F. Paint that freezes won’t dry properly, and homeowners might be left with a costly and unsightly mistake on their hands. Fall temperatures tend to be amenable to both interior and exterior painting projects, just be sure to check the weather forecast before making your first brush stroke.

News Police dealing with more drinking in public Nelson Star Staff

Nelson Police Department say they’ve been handing out numerous fines for drinking in public.

“People should be aware this is in contravention of the Liquor Control and Licensing Act and carries a fine of no less than $230,” police said in a release.

Police may also seize and destroy any liquor remaining when someone is caught consuming it in public.

••• A mountain bike was stolen from a local shop on Saturday, August 24.

News An Extra Crackle During the Storm City of Nelson crews were out in full force on Monday morning dealing with a huge fallen tree in Uphill. Just after 11 p.m. Sunday night a violent thunderstorm that packed strong winds blew through the area. Minor damage was reported around the community, but one of the most dramatic scenes was at the corner of Robson and Ward streets where a huge blue spruce fell across the road. On Monday morning the city’s arborist team was on site clearing the tree which was estimated at 75 feet and in the 50-year-old range. Neighbours reported that they heard a big crash mixed in with the thunder when the tree came down.

ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS PROVIDE LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCE Four young Nelsonites raved about their experience at the recent week long Rotary District 5080 Youth Leadership Award camp held at Selkirk College, Castlegar. With 65 attendees from throughout D5080, this became an opportunity for personal growth, leadership development and appreciation of Canadian and American culture.

Jennifer Matosevic considered RYLA as “the best experience of her life so far”. The experience led her to “believe in the possibilities” available to her. Jesse Zak feels like he has “64 new family members”. He feels an increase in confidence through learning “great tactics for challenging problems”. Kevin Milde feels “confident, motivated and inspired by the opportunities to discover the world”. Christine Anderson, who is entering her final year at university found the experience to be a “confidence builder that provided her with an opportunity for “the development of the concept of self ”.

Dave Douglas, a member of the Rotary Club of Nelson Daybreak, has served in leadership roles at the RYLA Rotary District 5080 Youth Leadership camp for the past 30 years. ITS NOT OVER UNTIL ITS OVER – THE RALLYING CRY TO MEET THE $20,000 FUNDRAISING GOAL FOR SK8PARK

The Rotary Club of Nelson Daybreak remains steadfast in its commitment to advocate and fundraise to see the completion of the outdoor Skatepark now under development in Rosemont Park. It has been an incredible journey, spanning well over a decade, since a group of young parents united as KLOSPS (Kootenay Lake Outdoor Skate Park Society), with a dream of providing a skate park for their children.

It may well be that their grand-children will benefit from having a world class skatepark in Nelson.

In July a meeting of the various parties involved with the project was held to discuss a $20,000 shortfall in funding. The decision was made to continue to fundraise in attempt to give this City the best of the best – a world class park that would be of benefit to boarders of all ages and an asset to the City. The drawing card for future skateboarding events that could draw visitors to the City was recognized. The summer months are not the best time

to fundraise – service clubs have taken a hiatus, grant giving organizations defer decisions until all parties have returned from their summer activities.

Not to be deterred, this fund-raising group has continued to lobby for funds to complete the project; they patiently wait until meetings of various organizations are held in September.

Donations continue to trickle in to the “Square Foot” campaign which receives help from the taxable receipt giving Nelson Lions Club Charitable Trust, Box 492, Nelson, V1L 5R3. Have you bought your square foot? The carnival barkers at the Rotary Club of Nelson Daybreak hot dog stand will make a last ditch effort at the Road Kings weekend to entice the public to enjoy their fare and make a donation to this cause.

But its not over until its over – Nelson Daybreak Rotary has launched plans for (hopefully) a final fund-raising event – Burgers and Beer at Finleys on Thursday September 12 from 6-8. It is hoped that all donors and members of the various service clubs, businesses and other organizations that have been involved with seeing this dream become reality will come to hopefully celebrate the end of over a decade of hard work to make a dream come true.

Recently, I joined the 65 members of the MS Action Group. Through a monthly newsletter and e-mail group, new and useful information is shared worldwide through our Rotarian network.

Canada has a high incidence of MS with 1:1000 people suffering from MS. Locally we have support through the West Kootenay Chapter of the MS Society of which I serve as a Director. Locally we raise money for research, provide support services and advocacy as well as create awareness. Recently the second MS West Kootenay Glacier Challenge took place in which cyclists rode over 100 km each day. I find it amazing that several of the riders actually accomplish this while living with MS. Daybreak Rotarian Sheila Hart organized 70 volunteers to support the riders.

In addition, Rotarians Lorne Westnedge, Colleen Driscoll, Robin Cherbo and Heather Love serve on the Organizing Committee.

Roger Fontaine organized training rides for Rotarian participants in the event; Wendy Lacroix, Chris Chart, Lorne Westnedge, Peter Ward and Heather Love. I am proud to be on “Cranked Up”, the #1 FundraisingTeam that raised over $9000. The event raised close to $80,000 and donations can be made until October 31 through the MS Kootenay Challenge website www.msbiketours.ca .
