Kilvert will be looking for new practice nearby Nick Bekolay the chronicle

A recent decision by a local medical clinic not to renew a doctor’s contract has prompted several former patients to voice their objections publicly, due in part to an inaccuracy reported in the Aug. 13 issue of the Chronicle.

Joan Etheridge was quoted as saying that she had heard Dr. Vivan Kilvert was being let go by the Ladysmith Family Practice Clinic — a division of the Ladysmith Community Health Centre — due to the fact that an excess of tests ordered on behalf of patients had led to Kilvert being “over budget.”

Heather Dunne, site manager at the LCHC, confirmed that this was not the case.

“Dr. Kilvert didn’t directly spend any money at all,” Dunne said. “The physicians within the clinic are on a service contract and they all get paid the same. She wasn’t Subscribe to overspending.”

and VIHA,” Dunne explained — but she did say that the clinic’s decision not to renew Kilvert’s contract was “made for the best of the clinic and the community, although for some members of the community, it may not seem that way.”

Kilvert spoke to the Chronicle Aug. 23, confirming that had she been given a choice, she would have stayed on at the LFPC. “It was not my decision to not renew my contract,” Kilvert added.

Citing a confidentiality clause in her contract with VIHA, Kilvert said she was “not at liberty to discuss the particulars,” before adding that “this has been a difficult time for myself and many of my patients.”

“I will be looking for a new practice somewhere between Duncan and Nanaimo,” Kilvert added, “and of course my former patients are welcome in the future at any practice I may have.”

Kilvert was born and raised in Ladysmith, she said. She completed her bachelor of science at UVic before moving to Calgary to pursue a degree in medicine.

Following a family-practice residency in Calgary, Kilvert returned home to Vancouver Island in 2001 to spend the next several years covering locums in the region. She joined the LFPC in 2009.

As she moves on, Kilvert said she “probably won’t be going too far, because this is home.”

Kilvert advised that any further inquiries or comments regarding her departure from the LFPC be directed to VIHA or to Dunne. VIHA’s communications and public relations department for Central Vancouver Island can be reached by phone at 250-739-6303.

Dr. Chris Fritsch, a former colleague of Kilvert’s at the LFPC, referred to her as an “excellent doctor” before labelling the clinic’s decision to let Kilvert go as “unreasonable.”

Free fares mark the arrival of BC Transit’s long-anticipated bus service for Ladysmith and surrounding area Sept. 3.

To help launch BC Transit’s four new local routes and its Chemainus connector — and to commemo­ rate 20 years’ worth of transit service in the Cowichan Valley — transit commuters ride for free Tuesday, Sept.

3, on routes throughout the Cowichan Valley Regional Transit System (CVRTS), save for the “Cowichan Commuter.”

From Sept. 3 on, Ladysmith residents can expect transit service — provided by short-bodied “Arboc” buses — on four local routes with additional service to Chemainus four times each weekday and twice per day on weekends.

Routes provide service from a transit hub at First Avenue and Symonds Street to Malone Road and Colonia Drive (Route 31), to Forrest Field (Route 32), to Transfer Beach and Oyster Bay Drive (Route 33) and to Coronation Mall (Routes 34A and 34B) and Davis Road (Route 34B). Route 35, meanwhile, provides ser-

vice from Ladysmith to Chemainus, where commuters can transfer to Route 6 for service to Duncan and Mill Bay. Schedules vary from route to route and can be found in the CVRTS Rider’s Guide.

Regular cash fares of $2 for adults and $1.75 for students and seniors take effect Sept.

4, while children aged four or younger ride free, according to the CVRTS Rider’s Guide.

Tickets, sold in packs of 10, cost $16 for adults and $13.50 for students and seniors.

Day passes cost $4 for adults and $3.25 for students, while monthly passes cost $48 for adults and $36 for seniors, students and post-secondary students.

Bus tickets and passes will be sold at Ladysmith City Hall, at the Frank Jameson Community Centre and at 49th Parallel Grocery in Ladysmith prior to September 3, BC Transit corporate spokesperson Meribeth Burton said, and beginning Sept. 6, BC Transit will make tickets available for purchase online.

“Cowichan will be one of the first ever BC Transit systems to do e-commerce, which will be super exciting,” Burton said. “So

For now, only day passes and monthly passes will be available for sale online, Burton added, and these will be shipped to customers by Canada Post.

BC Transit is in the process of assessing a variety of 21st-century payment technologies ­— including swipe cards and smartphone credit systems — that riders would be able to recharge online, but adopting these technologies is a ways off.

“We’re looking at [systems] in Sweden and in Texas to see what’s effective, but when you make a big technological leap like that, there’s a lot of things that need to be in play before that happens,” added Burton.

A standard $2 fare provides service throughout the CVRTS, Burton said, but for riders commuting from Duncan to Victoria via Route 66, an additional $7 transfer fee will apply.

Oddly enough, when travelling in reverse, transit commuters can ride directly to Ladysmith from Victoria for $7, provided they use their transfer within 90 minutes following their arrival in Duncan, Burton said.

A

wise person once said: “time is like money; it isn’t how much you spend, but what you do with what you have.”

Certainly a commendable aspiration, considering how short life really is.

The realities of modern-day life, however, seem to strip away at our precious time at an ever-increasing rate, making it difficult to spend time wisely.

Faced with these tugs on personal time, it is remarkable and noteworthy that many among us find the time to volunteer.

For that, we are grateful.

Volunteers help build welcoming, supportive communities that are rich. Rich, not in the sense of wealth, but rather in terms of activities, events and services that help enrich the lives of everyone in the community.

In most communities, sports of any kind would not exist without the community members who volunteer their time to coach.

Service organizations such as the Rotary Club, Lions Club, the Kinsmen or Eagles, to name just a few, offer their time in service to the community, in addition to raising money for special community projects.

Then there are events like this past weekend’s Arts on the Avenue and the Show and Shine car show the weekend before that or the Sunday night Concerts in the Park series that just ended — and so many other events we love. These are organized and run by tireless volunteers who give countless hours.

A

dvanced Education Minister Amrik Virk has offered some advice for students heading for postsecondary education this fall.

In a commentary sent to B.C. newspapers, Virk reminded students that his task “is to ensure postsecondary students obtain the experience and qualifications needed to put a paycheque in their back pocket.”

B.C. is forecast to have one million jobs to fill by 2020, through a combination of retirements and economic growth. More than 40 per cent of them will require trades and technical training, and for students, likely a move north.

“My advice to students is to look at where the jobs are based and tailor their education and training to match,” Virk wrote. “Our population is concentrated in the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island,

That’s not the only blunt message for students deciding on a career. While defending his ministry’s spending plans in the recent legislature session, Virk described some of the problems that are entrenched.

Parents, particularly in immigrant communities, push their children towards medicine, law, dentistry or engineering, he noted. Students themselves gravitate toward areas that are familiar to them, such as teaching.

B.C. universities graduated 2,000 new teachers last year. Another 850 arrived from out of province and were licensed to teach in B.C. During the same year, the B.C. school system hired 800 teachers.

And many of those jobs were outside metropolitan areas.

its new employer-driven Canada Jobs Grant. Clark and New Brunswick Premier David Alward were assigned to find an alternative to this drastic shift and report back in the fall.

As usual, the NDP spent lots of time grilling Virk about student debt and the alleged need to reduce it.

Ministry statistics show that about 30 per cent of students take out loans from the federal-provincial program, and the average is $20,000. One of the latest changes is a program of grants that go toward student debt as a reward for those who complete their chosen program.

Virk is under instructions to review the student loan program “to find further improvements to meet students’ needs.” Given the magnitude of the gap between what skills our education system produces and what the economy needs, a larger shift in priorities is needed.

Virk acknowledges that his budget contains another $1 million for advertising, the same as last year, much of it to reinforce the need to fill skilled jobs. But he danced around the question of whether there will be spaces in technical programs.

NDP critics say the waiting list for these kinds of programs at Kwantlen University and B.C. Institute of Technology are running between a year and three years. And they have frequently noted that advanced education spending is budgeted to decline by $42 million over the next three years.

Virk said post-secondary institutions working with industry have produced 456 additional seats in high-demand programs for this year. It’s a start.

Dr. Kilvert provided me with excellent care in response to what the Duncan Internist told me was “catastrophic high blood pressure.”

The fundraising target for this year’s campaign, which runs until Sept. 5, is $50,000 to buy school supplies and help provide basic necessities, including school lunch and breakfast programs for children in need.

Sponsors and supporters have helped raise $140,000 for the foundation’s Student Support Fund since the campaign started in 2009.

“It’s been huge support from the community,” said Erin van Steen, foundation executive director. “I can’t say enough about

how much of a difference that money makes to the vulnerable children within our school district and how much it assists them with going back to school and also throughout the school year.”

The campaign is the foundation’s biggest annual fundraiser.

Locally, the goal is to raise $10,000 to help Ladysmith students.

Residents can donate in person at the Ladysmith and District Credit Union from now until Sept. 5.

As well, donations can be made by cash or cheque through the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation office by calling 250753-4074 or online at the schools foundation’s website at www. nlsf.ca.

Ladysmith man identified as pilot in fatal crash The BC Coroners Service has identified two men killed in a float plane crash near Hesquiat Lake Friday, Aug. 16.

The Air Nootka flight crashed shortly after takeoff on a late-morning flight from Hesquiat Lake to Gold River, killing the pilot and one of five passengers on board.

According to a BCCS press release issued Aug. 23, the pilot has been identified as Clifford Howatt, 66, of Ladysmith and the 63-year-old passenger as Charles Henry Turner of Courtenay.

The four remaining passengers survived the crash.

Family members have been notified, the BCCS reports, and “the BCCS, the Transportation Safety Board and WorkSafe BC continue to investigate these deaths.”

South-side grafitti spree leads to $2,000 in property damage The Ladysmith RCMP is calling on the public to help identify those responsible for a latenight grafiti spree on the southern outskirts of Ladysmith last weekend.

According to a press release issued by Staff Sgt. Dave Herman, unknown persons spray painted “profanity and drawings of a phallic nature” on “cars, garage doors, post office boxes, speed signs, street signs, fire hydrants, and roadways” along Chemainus Road from North Watts Road to the intersection of Highway 1 and North Davis Road.

These “criminal acts of mischief” were carried out “in the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 18,” Herman wrote.

The RCMP estimates the damage to properties along Chemainus Road to be “well in excess of $2,000.”

“Police are aware of a few parties that occurred in the neighbourhood overnight Saturday,” Herman wrote, adding that the RCMP “feel that the subject responsible may have been a guest or a friend of a guest” at one of the parties in question.

The RCMP urges anyone with information related to this incident to contact the Ladysmith detachment at 250-245-2215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

This year marks a milestone for the Vancouver Island Music Awards (VIMAs), which will celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2014.

Now is the time to become part of the excitement, as the VIMAs are now accepting submissions from Vancouver Island musicians aged 10 to adult in all music styles.

This year’s theme is The Song, and the award categories reflect this theme.

Categories include: Vocal Performance of the Year, Music Video of the Year, Live Act of the Year, Youth Song of the Year, Roots/Folk/ Country Song of the Year, Blues Song of the Year, Jazz Song of the Year, Pop Song of the Year, Rock Song of the Year, Hard Rock/Metal Song of the Year, World Music Song of the Year, and Children’s Music Song of the Year.

Mary Ann Gerwing is a member of the Chemainus Sketch Group and an avid painter of her surroundings. She is inspired by landscapes and works primarily in acrylic and watercolour, but she loves to experiment with mixed media, graphite and charcoal.

Gerwing grew up in Humboldt, Sask., and since then, she has lived on three continents, teaching and exploring the world. She taught junior high and high school for 37 years.

Following her artistic senses, she moved from Victoria to Chemainus in 2004 and found a creative circle in which to immerse herself. She is an active member of the Chemainus Sketch Group and the Ladysmith Arts Council.

Her images come from deep within and are her own particular poetry expressed in paint. She yearns to capture things in a unique way, in a stroke, in a simple execution, rather than a complex piece of work. At times, she strains to get the depth of the message through in a simple way that is compatible with this desire.

“I like to empty myself of mundane things and go beyond the ordinary. I look for excitement in daily things; a consciousness that I’m not conscious of,”

describes Gerwing.

To empty herself, Gerwing walks and goes out in nature. This helps to empty out her soul in preparation for the profundity she seeks in painting.

She is inspired by trees, landscapes and the natural world around her. Gerwing is a frequent painter — sometimes she paints daily; other times, she takes a break from her work and prepares canvases and attends galleries.

She is inspired by art that has a social commentary. Her favourite artists are minimalists: Wolf Kahn, Gerhard Richter and local artist Dennis Brown.

Gerwing’s works can be found at the Ladysmith Art Gallery showings and, at times, in local cafés and businesses.

History

Covering the miners’ strike 100 years ago This is the first part of a series contributed by Ed Nicholson regarding the Vancouver Island coal miners’ strike in 1913.

Watch for more in next week’s Chronicle.

In this monthly column, I try to give readers some insight into daily events 50, 75 and 100 years ago in the town of Ladysmith and surrounding areas. I read each issue of the Chronicle and search for items or events which may be both interesting and informative to readers of this newspaper. However, this month’s column will focus specifically on August of 1913, which marked a critical turning point in the Vancouver Island coal miners’ strike of 1912-1914.

Usually, the Chronicle is a valuable research tool for exploring Ladysmith’s colourful history, but in 1913, the paper had

A brief editorial expressed the Chronicle’s hope that “some sane move will be made to bring the present intolerable condition of affairs to an end.” The word “strike” is never used.

However, as the situation worsened, Sam Carley, editor and publisher of the Chronicle was forced to acknowledge the seriousness of the matter. In the Aug. 12 issue, the editor published a two-column story under the headline “Rioting at Nanaimo,” which was written entirely using quotes from the Nanaimo Free Press and Victoria Colonist.

Not one word was written about the conflict by the Chronicle’s own staff.

OPENING DAY – TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2013 REGISTRATION INFORMATION NEW TO OUR DISTRICT? If you are new to the Cowichan Valley School District, you can find your neighborhood school by using the school locator on our website – www.sd79.bc.ca (under Quick Links). Please register at the school during the week of Monday, August 26 to Friday, August 30. (Note – registration for new students attending Thetis Island School is at Chemainus Elementary Community School.) We require the student’s birth certificate or passport as well as the parent’s identification and proof of residency; a BC Care Card is not acceptable. Parents should accompany the student. Please bring the student’s most recent report showing final marks.

KINDERGARTEN All schools in our district offer full-day Kindergarten. Register by contacting the school during the week of Monday, August 26 to Friday, August 30. If this is not possible, register on opening day. Children entering Kindergarten in September must be five years old by December 31, 2013. We require the student’s birth certificate or passport as well as the parent’s identification and proof of residency; a BC Care Card is not acceptable. Kindergarten students have gradual entry to schools.

STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Students with special needs who register during the year will start school after a transition meeting has been held at the school. New students who register during the year will start attending on the following day.

ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2013 – MORNING ATTENDANCE ONLY Cowichan Valley Elementary Schools (including grades 4 – 7 at Lake Cowichan School) will dismiss three hours earlier on opening day. As space and special needs placements are a concern, this will allow for new enrollments to be carefully considered and enrolled for success.

RETURNING STUDENTS Most schools post information for parents regarding the first day of school.

SECONDARY STUDENTS All secondary schools will dismiss three hours earlier on opening day.

AFTERNOON SCHEDULES On Tuesday, September 3, 2013 only afternoon routes will run three hours earlier than scheduled.

PLEASE READ THE SCHOOL BUS SCHEDULE – MANY ROUTES AND SCHOOL TIMES HAVE CHANGED! Route information will be finalized August 26th and posted at the schools and on the district website (www.sd79.bc.ca). LAP, MAP and accommodations for students with Special Needs will be available in the Transportation Department after August 26th. Bus routes and times are subject to change – please have your child at the stop 10 minutes prior to the scheduled time.

Please refer to the Transportation page on the District Website to review changes to transportation policies and bus fee payment information. Invoices for bus fees will be issued at the end of September.

Don’t forget to register for the school bus before September. Bus registration forms may be found on our website or visit the Transportation Department after August 26th. Remember, all bus riders must be registered each year! If you have questions about your bus schedule you may contact the Transportation Department at 250-748-1066.

Nicolas Echevarria Born in Liverpool, England, “Nickâ€? led a life that inspired, inuenced, and made many people happy. In 1942, he married Jessica Davison who became his life-long sweetheart of 71 years. Nick was a talented musician, a ďŹ reďŹ ghter, and an electronic technician. He served in the British military 1939-1946. He emigrated to Canada in 1956 and became a member of the Bahå’í Faith in 1958. Nick passed on to the next world at the age of 94 at Sunridge Place in Duncan, August 20th.

He and his family greatly appreciated the dedicated nursing care, kindness, and respect of the staff at Dogwood House and Gentle Grove, and, for the visits and devotional gatherings of the Bahå’í Community held at Sunridge.

Nick is survived by his wife, Jessie, daughter, Lynn Echevarria, sister Francis, 5 grandchildren: Jennifer Lightbody, Julia Howe, Gwen Wright, Geoffrey Howe, Michael Echevarria, and 6 great-grandchildren. His son Paul predeceased him in 2005.

Memorial service and a celebration of his life was held at Sands Funeral Chapel, Saturday August 24th at noon, followed by Interment at Shawnigan Lake Cemetery.

Bob (Hugh Robert) NISBET July 4, 1942 ~ August 10, 2013

Bob was born in Nanaimo, BC. He lived most of his life at Cassidy, BC, then moved to Extension, BC. He graduated from Nanaimo Secondary School then began his working career at Crofton Mill.

After early retirement, he pursued many interests – hiking, canoeing, kayaking, hunting, fishing, photography, music, road trips, reading and listening to stories of the olden days. Bob was extremely dedicated to safety. His vehicles were always expertly maintained and of course, always polished. In his later retirement years Bob met his partner and companion, Maudine. They shared interests including travel and cooking.

Bob was predeceased by his mother, Rose; and his infant daughter, Dynette Dawn. He is survived by his sons, Rob, and Dayle (Ellie); their mother, Jean; his grandchildren: Andy, Jake, and Jazmine; as well as sisters, Sheila and Sharron; and brother-in-law, Carl Anderson; his father, Hugh of Ladysmith and Maudine.

Bob was taken tragically in Victoria, BC. We have broken hearts, but memories that will last a lifetime. When you remember Bob, please honor him by helping others as he did, caring for the environment and taking quiet moments to enjoy the beauty of planet earth.

Donations, in memory of Bob, would be appreciated. Please consider either the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 401-495 Dunsmuir St, Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 6B9 or BC Cancer Foundation, 2410 Lee Ave, Victoria, B.C. V8R 6V5 (Funds to stay within the Vancouver Island Centre).

Caroline has been part of the 49th for the past two and one half years. First working and giving advice in our seasonal Garden Shop and more recently as a member or our Deli and Sushi departments. Caroline is a very upbeat and can-do type of person. This is a great asset for a deli department that can easily have a half dozen different jobs going at one time. Caroline has worked for several months in our Sushi department and can make every roll we sell with precision and accuracy. With Caroline making Sushi you can be sure that the tasty roll that you had yesterday is going to be exactly the same as the one you just purchased. Add in that Caroline’s Sushi duties are expanding and is shortly taking over as our main sushi chef and you have a valuable and valued member of our 49th team.
