Former economic manager sues Suit alleges firing an effort to get rid of senior staff Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

A lawsuit against the City of Abbotsford from a former manager alleges he was wrongfully dismissed as part of a concerted effort to remove the city’s senior employees.

Jay Teichroeb left his position as general manager of economic development in June. A notice of civil claim was filed in B.C. Supreme Court in Kelowna on June 27, listing Teichroeb as a TEICHROEB plaintiff in a wrongful dismissal claim against the city.

The claim states that the city manager – George Murray – notified Teichroeb in writing around June 17 that he would be fired with cause for an alleged “breach of fidelity.”

The city claimed that Teichroeb had authorized a property developer to start construction without a building permit.

The documents state that Teichroeb de-

nied the allegation, and in response, the city alleged he was being dishonest about the incident.

While denying that Teichroeb provided the authorization for the construction, the suit states that even if the allegation was true, it is not just cause for termination.

The suit maintains that the city could have, by reasonable investigation, determined the allegation was false, but that the city failed to properly and fairly investigate the claim against him.

MURRAY The suit states that alleging Teichroeb was dishonest is “false and unjustified” and an attack on his reputation.

The statement of claim also describes the city’s actions as “harsh, vindictive, reprehensible and malicious.”

The suit claims that Teichroeb’s dismissal was not based on the city’s honest belief in the allegations, but rather “was part of an improper course of conduct designed to dismiss the senior employees of the

(City of Abbotsford).” The claim states that the city misrepresented its reasons for his dismissal, and was “fabricated by the (City of Abbotsford) for an ulterior purpose.”

In addition to Teichroeb, general manager of finance Pat Soanes left city hall in June. In July, manager of bylaw enforcement Gordon Ferguson left his position.

Documents obtained by the Abbotsford News through Freedom of Information requests revealed that Soanes received $88,550 as a settlement agreement, while Ferguson did not receive any compensation following his departure.

Teichroeb had worked at city hall for over 12 years – acting as general manager of economic development since 2009 – and will be seeking compensation for his losses.

The allegations have not been proven in court and online court records show the city has not yet filed a response.

The News contacted Murray, who said he is unable to comment on personnel matters or issues that are before the courts.

Teichroeb is now working for the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada.

Patty Marciano was sitting on the upper back porch of her home in the Auguston area of Abbotsford last Wednesday with her beloved dog Cyrus when she caught sight of something black moving near her yard.

At first, she thought it was a raccoon rustling through the dense brush beyond the sixfoot-high chain link fence bordering her backyard.

Before she could verify the source of the sound, Cyrus – a five-year-old pit bull mix – raced down the stairs and to the lower tier of the backyard.

Marciano chased after him, just in time to see Cyrus run toward a black bear that had jumped the fence.

The two animals began fighting, but the 60-pound dog was no match for the bear – about four times his size. The bear pinned Cyrus to the ground.

Marciano began striking the bear on the head with a shovel, and it took about four or five hits before the creature released its grip on Cyrus.

The dog scrambled free, and Marciano ran after him as the bear chased them both. They

Marciano immediately scooped up her badly bleeding dog, loaded him into her truck and sped to Whatcom Road Veterinary Hospital.

Cyrus was suffering from deep gashes on his head, chest and shoulder. He required numerous stitches and staples, as well as surgical drains on his shoulder and chest to prevent infection as he heals.

A neighbour told her that the bear in question is a mother with two cubs. Marciano said the cubs must have been waiting on the other side of the fence at the time of the attack, but she didn’t see them in the midst of the chaos.

She worries that pets or small children could be attacked.

“If Cyrus had been a different type of breed, I don’t think he would have made it,” Marciano said.

Ian MacDonald said the Abbotsford Police Department has received “a solid half dozen” reports of bears this summer in areas such as Wells Gray Avenue, DeLair Park and Whatcom Road.

He said police in these situations will try to scare the bear away from public areas and, if they are unable to do so, the provincial Conservation Officer Service is called.

Cyrus was able to go home later that night and is expected to make a full recovery, although Marciano said he is traumatized by the incident.

“He’s been lying beside me all day,” she said the day after the attack.

Cyrus has also been hesitant to go in the backyard, although he did venture out there briefly with Marciano.

She is sharing her story as a cautionary tale for others. She

UFV launches shuttle bus service Will travel between Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses

Students and employees who travel between the Abbotsford and Chilliwack campuses of the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) will have an

Two shot on Ponderosa Street

Police say victims have no gang or drug connections Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News

Abbotsford Police are trying to piece together why two men with no apparent drug or gang connections were shot at while driving along Ponderosa Street early Thursday morning.

Const. Ian MacDonald said the 19- and 28-year-old, who were wounded in the shooting, have been co-operating with police.

“We have had very minimal (previous) contact with the two victims. We would not put them in the category of gangs or drugs by any stretch,” he said.

MacDonald said the pair were “very fortunate” to

have sustained only non-lifethreatening injuries in the incident, but added that they are still recovering from gunshot wounds.

The two were driving in the area of Ponderosa Street and Ponderosa Place at about 1:20 a.m. when they were shot at by a passing vehicle.

MacDonald said it is not yet known how many shots were fired, although police recovered several shell casings.

The victims are residents of west Abbotsford, but do not live in the area of the shooting, he said.

MacDonald said investigators are interviewing witnesses and hope to obtain footage from video surveillance cameras installed at

homes in the area to get a description of the culprit(s) and the suspect vehicle, which sped away from the scene.

APD’s major crime unit, patrol division, forensic identification unit, and collision reconstructionists are continuing to investigate.

This is the third shooting in Abbotsford this summer.

Harpreet Chahal, 25, was killed June 23 in a drive-by shooting at the intersection of South Fraser Way and Emerson Street.

Police have identified that

incident as a targeted gangrelated hit.

On July 15, alleged Abbotsford gangster Brian “Shrek” Dhaliwal, an alleged former associate of Jarrod Bacon, was shot at while he was driving along Downes Road between 264 Street and Mt. Lehman Road.

He showed up at the hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, and hospital staff called police. At the time, police said the victim in the incident was not providing many details.

Dhaliwal has been the target of prior incidents, prompting police to set up video surveillance cameras in the vicinity of his Bradner Road home last October.

Police seeking to identify robbery suspect Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

Police are looking for assistance to identify a suspect in a robbery and attempted robbery in July.

At 9 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, a cab driver was called to the Bourquin bus exchange to meet a fare. The 52-year-old driver picked up the man and drove only a few blocks before the suspect pulled a knife and demanded money.

The suspect fled with a small amount of cash.

Const. Ian MacDonald said police obtained surveillance video from the Bourquin bus exchange, showing a man at the location a few minutes before he entered the taxi. Police have released still images, showing a cleanshaven Caucasian man in his 20s, about 5’10”, with short dark hair.

MacDonald said police believe the suspect fits the description of a man involved in an attempted robbery that occurred five days earlier. On July 15, a man entered a gas station on the 2900 block of Immel at around 10:45 p.m., pulled out a knife and demanded cash. There were three people in the store, two employees and a customer.

MacDonald said that after the suspect pulled the knife, a “66-year-old male employee grabs a golf club and chases the guy from the store.”

Liberals outspend competition in local ridings Alex BUTLER and Jeff NAGEL Abbotsford News

Liberal party candidates raised and spent more money than their competition in Abbotsford’s ridings this year, en route to winning each of the three local seats in the legislature in May’s provincial election.

Financial reports, released last week by Elections BC, show the income and expenditures of each provincial candidate.

In Abbotsford West, Liberal MLA Michael de Jong won reelection, securing a fifth term in the legislaDE JONG ture.

His total campaign budget was $175,978, including $45,800 in political contributions and $126,628 in transfers from affiliated organizations such as the Liberal Party and the local riding association.

The total expenditure reported was $137,410.

Sukhi Dhami, the NDP candidate, and Moe Gill, running as an independent, were among 10 candidates in the province who failed to file their financial re-

ports by the deadline set out in the Election Act. The reports may be filed by Sept. 11, with a late filing fee of $500.

The riding’s Conservative candidate, Paul Redekopp, had a total campaign income of $51,870, with only $40 coming from transfers and the rest in political contributions. His total expenditures were listed at $79,330. Green Party candidate Stephen O’Shea had $2,080, including $180 in political contributions and $1,900 in transJHAJ fers.

In Abbotsford South, Liberal candidate Darryl Plecas ousted incumbent and independent MLA John van Dongen, putting an end to his 18-year political career.

Plecas had a total campaign budget of $106,292, with $12,978 in political contributions and $91,523 in transfers.

Van Dongen’s campaign funding was $81,776, with $9,800 and $71,725 in transfers. Plecas reported his total expenditures as $109,716, while van Dongen

spent $81,776.

Lakhvinder Jhaj, NDP candidate for the riding, received a total of $48,721, with $29,211 in contributions and $19,260 in transfers.

In Abbotsford-Mission, Abbotsford city councillor and newly-elected Liberal MLA Simon Gibson received $59,460, including $3,040 in political contributions and $54,629 in transfers.

Following him was NDP candidate Preet Rai with $47,306 including $16,688 in political contributions and $30,366 in GIBSON transfers. Green Party candidate Aird Flavelle had a total of $3,377, with $500 in contributions and $2,877 in transfers, and Conservative candidate Don Stahl had an income of $5,021, with $4,301 coming from political contributions and $720 in transfers.

Gibson’s total expenses were $59,757, while Rai spent $49,563 on his campaign.

Across the province, the BC Liberals spent $11.75 million this year on their way to victory.

A public right to know Through a Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy request, The News was recently able to shed light on the financial details involved in the departure of three senior city managers.

That information was of importance, since the termination or even voluntary resignation of high-ranking civil servants is commonly accompanied with compensation packages, frequently involving six-figure sums.

In the case of the City of Abbotsford’s finance manager Pat Soanes, who left in June, the settlement was $88,550, climbing to just over $100,000 when vacation pay and remaining wages are included.

Bylaw enforcement manager Gordon Ferguson, who left in July, received $28,102, with no settlement.

The true cost of the June departure of Jay Teichroeb, general manager of economic development and planning, is yet to be seen, since he received only $18,796, without a compensation package. We now know that Teichrob is suing the city for

wrongful dismissal.

If an out-of-court settlement does not occur, a judge will eventually determine if Teichroeb’s termination was justified, or whether the city must pay damages.

In either case, the amount is likely to be substantial.

That’s a concerning question for taxpayers, but it is outweighed by another one – far more basic.

An FOI request should not have been required to obtain the financial details regarding these three city hall employees.

Their salaries, benefits and any departing compensation and costs are paid entirely from public money.

Abbotsford taxpayers have the right to know all of those details – quickly, as a matter of city policy – without having to wait for the media to utilize provincial legislation to compel the release of what is clearly public information.

There’s been much political talk about transparency and accountability at city hall.

In this respect, let’s see it.

Other Hand If you are into Facebook, Twitter and other social media connections, you know how tempting it is to share your exploits with others.

Nothing like showing off to friends your current travel adventures via upto-the-minute pictures, perhaps gloating a bit about the induced envy you are creating by doing something they aren’t, or can’t.

What people forget, however, in a desire to share everything almost as it happens is to reveal where you are, and the vulnerability of where you aren’t – like a vacant home with all your valuables sitting unwatched.

Perhaps you can trust your friends, but often your information goes far beyond what you expect. For example, your friends are at an event and are asked

your whereabouts.

The problem is that others can, and do, overhear the conversation. Then over a beer in the local bar, your absence could be discussed once again – as in “did you know that guy who lives two doors down from me is off on another European vacation?”

Again the conversation can be overheard, this time perhaps by one who has nefarious intentions. It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out where someone lives nor, with a keen ear, if they’re home or not.

So, if you are intent on sharing your adventures, do it after you return home.

Might take a little blush off the rose of ego, so to speak, but at least you aren’t telling the world “My home is alone and waiting to be pillaged.”

The upside to vacation photos shared on social media is that when you visit friends you can easily decline an invitation to sit through endless slides of them standing in front of statues by simply saying “Thanks but we’ve already seen them on Facebook.” (Little white lies can save a whole bunch of boredom).

Then again, who takes slides these days, or for that matter, has real pictures that go into a family photo album?

Virtually every photo taken today is electronic, either on a phone or camera, the images downloaded to a computer to be displayed, and almost as quickly forgotten.

Gone will be the ability to share old

Gone will be the ability to share old photos with future generations... photos with future generations because unless those pictures were archived on a disc that was not somehow lost, and the technology of the day can still “read” them, hard copies of memories past will be gone forever.

In my basement rest a number of old family albums that haven’t been opened for eons, and may never be ... upon my demise tossed with all the other detri-

tus hoarded over the years.

Within those pages are pictures of grandparents and great-grandparents and other relatives.

Hopefully they will be retained so future generations can figure out why they look a certain way, and from which side of the family came the prominent genes.

Perhaps too, one day one of my grandchildren will show a wrinkled and faded photo of a long-haired hippie-like guy to their children, explaining that was what their grandfather looked like when he was young.

Reality though, in this clutter-less society that we are developing, is that those photos, and most of the history of families will be relegated to the dump, the past only co njured through Google or Wikipedia or some such future information access source, and only if you’ve done something worthy of being recorded for posterity on the worldwide web.

Atheists are all right It was great to see your recent write-up about some atheists in Abbotsford lending a hand alongside the 5 and 2 Ministries.

I suppose one side “imagines no religion� and the other thinks we need more, but their squabble ends there. They both agree to love their neighbors (even the ones without housing). I like it. And if they are just looking for some good press, is that any more despicable than a Christian doing it simply for high marks with the Lord? I say no.

avoid being pre-judged because of their path and let people know they’re decent by doing a bit of charity, then I thank them for getting themselves in the paper and for  picking up the slack left by missionaries trying to win over Africa. Someone needs to remember that Canadians need help, too.

Not that it means much, but you have my blessing, Fraser Valley Atheists. I hope you keep it up, even when the newspaper reporter isn’t around.

I’d like to thank all the patient drivers that were on Whatcom Road last Sunday morning, (Aug. 18). When running with my nine month old puppy (that is still in the training stage) the leash slipped out of my hand and she took the opportunity to investigate the two lane road for what felt like forever.

There were many patient drivers that stopped and waited while I tried to coax my puppy back to me; she evidently thought it was a fun game.

Thank you to everyone that waited patiently while I tried to put an end to my very frustrating and very embarrassing situation. I can only imagine how awful I would have felt if drivers started to honk and get impatient!

Salmon poaching Shutdown creates demand Fisheries officers have doubled their patrols on the lower Fraser River to battle poachers who are illegally catching threatened sockeye salmon to sell into the black market.

All fishing for sockeye has been shut down in response to a low run size and dangerously high river temperatures to ensure as many of the salmon get upriver to spawn as possible.

But Department of Fisheries and Oceans area director Herb Redekopp said the “full-out conservation closure� hasn’t deterred illegal fishing on the river. “Last night we ran into another group of poachers,� he said Friday, adding officers made arrests and seized illegally caught salmon, gear and a boat.

He said eight vessels had been seized as of Friday, along with 50 nets, and 27 investigations are in progress that have or are expected to result in charges under the Fisheries Act. The most intense illegal fishing is happening between Surrey and Spuzzum, in various hot spots around Agassiz, Chilliwack and the Fraser Canyon.

No commercial or recreational fishing for sockeye has been allowed this year.

Pent-up demand for sockeye has driven prices up and prompted much more illegal fishing than in past years, Redekopp said. “There’s a huge illegal marketplace for black market salmon.�

There are a “ton of hurdles that need to be jumped over” before a proposed music festival at the Abbotsford Airport comes close to reality.

That’s according to Mayor Bruce Banman.

Banman was responding to the announcement that Abbotsford’s Gary “Sir Johan” Karlsen III – the founder, president, CEO, and Co-Chairman of the Jimi Hendrix Family Foundation – and former Abbotsford Chamber president Sir James Barlow have joined forces in hopes of bringing rock ‘n’ roll royalty to town.

The proposal is “very much at the infancy stage,” said Banman.

“It’s an exciting project to think that the types of names they are bandying about could come and perform here in Abbotsford. It would be a fantastic draw for the entire region.

However, having said that, there is a ton of work to be done.”

The festival is still just an idea. No contracts have been signed, no dates have been set and no business plan has been created.

“This is a working airport, we can’t shut down the airport for three days. We don’t shut down the airport for the Abbotsford

Airshow and we can’t shut it down for this.”

He wants to see a business plan, which the organizers have yet to compile.

“The city is not going to spend one thin dime until we have some ironclad assurances that these gentlemen can do what they say they are going to do.”

According to Karlsen, the plan is to host a three-day concert, hopefully next year, featuring some of the greatest names in rock history. He said talks

Having only one number to call improves and streamlines client support, said Meadows.

“Our philosophy is ‘home is best,’” Meadows said, noting that people can get help developing a plan so elderly people can stay independent and at home longer, even after a hospital stay, or when they are having difficulties looking after themselves.

The new centralized system has also been integrated with B.C.’s acute care hospitals so people can return home more easily with appropriate nursing and other supports.

But Meadows advises people not to wait for a health emergency to plan for assistance for their loved one.

“We don’t want them to wait until their mother has fallen.

Humans are like this, particularly around caregiver burnout.

Families will adjust and move their lives around incredibly, and then they’re on the burning platform.

Humans don’t do a lot of pre-planning.”

Among the questions people ask themselves are: Can mom stay home safely by herself? Who will help Dad with his personal care when I’m at work? I no longer think I can live at home alone. I think I need some help, but what is available?

Meadows said Home Health Service Line staff can make suggestions and refer a client for a clinic or home assessment.

The new number is already in service for new clients, but current Home Health users can continue to call their local Home Health office for assistance.

People can also call 211 to look for community, social or government services.

IUOE 115 commits to training programs to build BC’s future The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 115 is a firm believer in the importance of trades training in order to meet the demands of BC’s growing economy and its ongoing investment into infrastructure and residential development projects.

IUOE Local 115, representing over 11,000 workers from a broad range of construction and industrial trades, has gone beyond simply acknowledging the challenges of the province’s growth plans, to providing long term training programs and facilities to ensure labour demands are met. “You can have as many projects on the table and investment as you like; if you don’t have trained people ready to dig, hoist, pour, or operate the dozens of machines required to build, you’ll never leave the drawing board� says IUOE Local 115 Business Manager Brian Cochrane.

That is why Local 115 runs a dedicated professional trades training division, which recently hosted their 18th Annual Open House and Heavy Equipment Rodeo at their fully equipped 40acre facility in Maple Ridge.

Local 115’s Training Association features over 25 pieces of fully operational heavy equipment, along with mobile computer simulation classrooms situated on an open site that replicates real-life working conditions. Every year also sees numerous and varied pieces of equipment sponsored

by Union Contractors on display.

The crowd of over 1,000 visitors enjoyed a day of operating the machines, great food and fun contests, and learning more about the role of the Union, and the need for the development of future trades skills within the province.

Welcome Back The start of school each September is ingrained in our culture. Students and parents endeavour to squeeze the last few days out of summer, but begin to turn their minds to the school year ahead as August winds down. Whether you will be in kindergarten for the first time, grade six at a new middle school, or in your graduating year, the year starts with both anticipation and uncertainty: attending a new school, learning with new teachers, and meeting new friends sometimes brings both excitement and trepidation. This is also true for many educators. They too look forward to meeting their new

SCHOOL OPENING: Tuesday, September 3, 2013: A. All staff will be present in schools in this district on Tuesday, September 3.

B. All students, Grades 1-12, will be in attendance on Tuesday, September 3, the opening day of the 2013/14 school year, for approximately one-half day.

C. For kindergarten students, please check with your child’s school for the

students, teaching new units of study, and working with new colleagues.

They too get a little nervous about doing a great job for their students.

That’s part of what makes the start of school so special.

The 2013/14 year promises to be a exciting one in the life of our district.

As we seek to further activate our Strategic Plan aimed at making every student in our care successful, you will see a number of new initiatives take flight. While there are a number of innovative programs in our district already, we have dedicated ourselves to further expanding the options for learners. Chief among

these programs are launches of our early learning programs, an outdoor school expression of interest, a district innovation centre, and specialized intervention schedules at three high schools (Robert Bateman, Abby Senior, and Abbotsford Traditional). It’s a great time to be a student or an educator in our district! Stay tuned.

To all our students, parents/guardians, and staff, please accept my heartfelt welcome to what promises to be a tremendous school year. I hope we all make 2013/14 our best one yet.

If registering a kindergarten child, please be reminded that students must be five (5) years of age by December 31, 2013 to be eligible, and parents must provide, at registration, a birth certificate (as proof of age), immunization record and proof of address (rental agreement, tax assessment, home purchase agreement, mortgage papers.)

B. Secondary school students new to their school attendance area and not yet registered are asked to contact their school immediately. (Please bring proof of address and last report card/withdrawal papers from previous school.)

Dr. Temple Grandin to speak World-renowned advocate to attend local educational seminar Wo r l d - r e n o w n e d speaker Dr. Temple Grandin will be in Abbotsford as part as an educational seminar on Thursday Aug. 29, at the Gateway CRC Church at 2884 Gladys Ave. The semin a r begins at 10 a.m., with GranGRANDIN d i n speaking from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and will focus on quality assurance in food production and animal welfare.

Grandin is currently a professor of animal science at Colorado State University. She is well-known for

overcoming personal struggles with autism and being an advocate for animal welfare in the food animal industry. She is the

After Dark at the Reach Gala event includes a silent auction of local works

The public has the opportunity to discover artistic talent where they’d least expect it.

Dozens of local community leaders, colleagues, dignitaries and professional artists have created individual original square foot art pieces to be auctioned off at After Dark at The Reach on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.

Guests can bid on these amazing new art creations during the Square Foot Silent Art Auction.

The event is not a

traditional black-tie gala.

It’s a fun event where people can expect to indulge in elegant artistic foods and sip on refreshing libations while listening to the upbeat jazzy music and vocals of the Ali Milner duo.

It is about having your portrait sketched by caricaturist Ted Couling or watching and waiting to bid on a piece being painted by local artist Paula Funk, catching the Pacific Pyros glass bead artist in action and admiring extraordinary pieces from local collectors.

Winter-themed designs wanted by Oct. 1 The Abbotsford Arts Council, in partnership with Kinetica Print and Opus Art Supplies, is calling for Fraser Valley artists to submit original, winter-themed artwork to its first Christmas Card Design Contest.

The winning piece will be displayed on the front of the Abbotsford Arts Council’s Christmas cards with the artist’s name, biography and picture featured on the back of the card.

The cards will be sent to approximately 500 artists, arts enthusiasts, Arts Council affiliates and partners.

“A huge part of our mandate is to promote the work of local artists,” said Gail Gromaski, executive director of the Abbotsford Arts Council.

“The card design contest is a fun and creative way of doing this while sending out holiday greetings from the Abbotsford Arts Council at the same time.”

The winning artist

will be announced and the card presented at the opening reception of the council’s Christmas Artisan Gift Fair at the Kariton Art Gallery, to be held Nov. 3, 2013.

In addition to having their artwork featured on the card, the winning artist will receive a $200 gift card courtesy of Opus Art Supplies.

Fraser Valley artists of all ages and skill levels are invited to submit images of their original, winter/holiday themed artwork to the Abbotsford Arts Council by Oct. 1.

Glory at Junior Worlds for Dhinsa

The living room of the Dhinsa family home doubles as a wrestling museum, and an impressive one at that.

Upwards of 100 medals won by Sunny Dhinsa, some dating back to when he was five years old, hang on a rope which runs along the wall, just below the ceiling. On the mantle, banners, sashes, posters and trophies are displayed. There’s even a “lucha libre” wrestling mask, which Dhinsa earned for finishing second at the 2011 PanAmerican Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Prompted to show off his most recent prize – which also happens to be his favourite – the 20-year-old grappler retrieves a bronze medal from amongst the spoils of victory.

Heat release schedule â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s huge for Wrestling Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;

Last week, by off-season standards, was a busy one for the Abbotsford Heat, highlighted by Thursdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s release of the full regular season schedule.

The Heat are set to open the campaign in Cleveland â&#x20AC;&#x201C;Â they visit the Lake Erie Monsters for a two-game set, Oct. 4-5.

The first regular season home games at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre are the following weekend, as the Milwaukee Admirals visit Oct. 11-12.

As previously announced, the Heat will host the Utica Comets, the Vancouver Canucksâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; new AHL affiliate, seven times in 2013-14. That includes a preseason game on Sept. 22, plus six regular season games. The regular season home dates are Nov. 29-30, Jan. 24-25, and March 14-15. The teams also play six times in Utica.

The preseason tourney runs Sept. 5-9 and brings together young players from the Flames, Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, San Jose Sharks and Winnipeg Jets.

Which one of these individuals is at the greatest health risk? One researcher answered this question in a famous study following more than 50 000 people over 8 years. Not only did he show that an extremely unfit person is at the greatest risk for death, but that inactivity is a bigger risk than smoking, obesity, and diabetes combined!

The lead researcher for this investigation was world-renowned physical activity and health expert Professor Steven Blair, who argues that physical inactivity is the biggest public health problem of the 21st century. Dr. Blair’s research has also focused on the concept of “fit vs. fat”, where he has shown that fit, obese individuals have lower health risks than unfit people with normal body weights. Since his work has shown how just 30 minutes of moderate activity a day can do wonders for your health, he is currently studying how different tools, such as social media, may help people reach their health and fitness goals.

BERGEN Jacob Isaac April 13, 1911- Aug 20, 2013 Jacob Bergen passed away peacefully in his sleep on Aug 20, 2013 at the Tabor Home in Abbotsford at the age of 102 and 5 months in the presence of his Lord and Savior. He trusted in Jesus throughout his life and also in death.

Born in Russia, the family joined a large group of Mennonites emigrating to Canada. They first settled in Holland, Manitoba where he married Agnes Friesen on July 19, 1942. Then moving to Greendale on a small farm on Adams Rd where they raised their 5 children. They attended the Greendale MB church where they were actively involved, then retiring in Clearbrook.

Left to cherish his memory are his children Ted, Ernie, Helen, Peter, Walter, 10 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

He is together with our Mother and Grandmother and we know that they are both at peace.

The family gives a special thank-you to the staff at the Tabor Home for their kindness and special care they gave to Jacob in his last years.

Jacob was laid to rest in the Greendale Cemetery on Aug 23, 2013 followed by a celebration of life with his family.

HELP WANTED Apiary Technicians/ Apiary Workers

Golden Ears Apiaries Inc. is seeking employees for the 2014 season. Apiary Technician (NOC 8253) 7 positions at $13.58/hr.

Apiary worker (NOC 8431) 3 positions at $11.81/hr. Work starts in mid Feb, 2014 and ends late Oct. 2014. Some evening, night and weekend work, full time seasonal work. Applicants must be in good physical condition and be able to work in a team environment., speak English and or Spanish. Apiary Technicians must have a min. of 2 years commercial beekeeping experience. They will handle feed and care for bees in a manner appropriate for the season. Assist in the production of queen cells, nucs, queens and or replacement colonies. Recognize, report and monitor hive health issues and apply appropriate cures/controls.

May drive and maintain vehicles including large trucks and forklifts. Maintain bee yards. Operate and maintain other apiary related equipment. Keep field and or production records.

Apiary harvesters do not require experience. They will super hives, harvest honey, extract honey, clean honey extraction and storage equipment. Move barrels, prepare and fill them.
