A recent poll* from the Heart and Stroke Foundation found that the majority of Canadian parents (81 per cent) provide their children with lunches and snacks at school that are packed for them at home.

However, with 22 per cent of parents saying their children are picky eaters, the challenge is ensuring they eat what is packed for them.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation`s Time to Start campaign, running from August 19 – September 8, 2013, is arming parents with the tips and tricks they need to pack healthier options that their kids will love.

“Picky eaters can be a challenge,” says Carol Dombrow, Heart and Stroke Foundation registered dietitian.

“Try engaging your kids by getting them more involved in snack and lunch preparation.

Kids that are included and have a say in the process are more likely to want to eat what you’ve prepared.”

As part of the Time to Start campaign, the Foundation is offering weekly meal plans developed by its registered dietitians on healthcheck.org. The plans come complete with shopping tips and helpful hints for parents to get their kids on the right track this

The coupon card, with tax, sells for $28 and canvassers have the technology to accept debit cards at the door.

East Kootenay Crime Stoppers’ last campaign raised approximately $13,000 for the program. This will be the third time the program has been run in the East Kootenay.

Crime Stoppers is not a police program.

Crime Stoppers is a community program supported by commu-

nity partnerships and financed through charitable fundraising. The funds raised go directly to program costs and to pay TIPSTERs their rewards.

Since 1992 East Kootenay Crime Stoppers have assisted in the recovering of stolen property and remove drugs from our communities valued in excess of $4,200,000,

while paying out approximately $27,000 in rewards. This year alone East Kootenay CS has assisted in the removal of over $800,000 worth of drugs already.

“This is an important source of revenue for our program,” said Ausman. “It’s one of the ways that we pay for rewards and run our program.”

Four lost jobs may not seem like much in a city the size of Cranbrook.

After all, in the current economic climate good jobs are scarce and people can be excused if they greet the news of the CP Rail layoffs with a shrug. But a railway is not like other businesses. Most companies do not have millions of tons of steel speeding their way across the country every day.

When you look at these cuts in that context, the news becomes a little more dire. The people who are laid off are carmen, a position that inspects dangerous goods as they go through the city. That leaves only three workers, less than half of what was deemed necessary before, to conduct these important inspections. If the reason for the layoffs was that the four carmen weren’t doing the job properly, they would have been replaced and this would not be a story. Instead, this is a story about profits and looking the health of the company, this seems callous.

Hold on though. A company has a duty to its shareholders to make a profit. If cutting jobs was a way to keep the struggling railway profitable, then it had to be done—that is, if it was struggling.

According to its own release, CP Rail’s second quarter results of 2013 included total revenues of $1.5 billion, which was an increase of 10 per cent and a quarterly record. This gave the company, in that quarter, a net income of $252 million compared with the same quarter of last year’s $103 million. That is a 138 per cent increase.

increase in revenue is the result of cutting jobs, increasing train speed, adding cars to trains and reducing idle time in the yards.

But how much profit is enough? Whether the number is $252 million or $103 million, that is pure profit—meaning everyone has been paid and debts serviced.

The shareholders were already getting dividends. In other words, the company was in the black before these measures; now it is just in the black more.

It isn’t as though the railways have adapted to a steady and predictable flow of goods across the country and through this city, making safety inspection redundant. Oil transport by rail has increased by 28,000 per cent since 2009, as stated by the Canadian Railway Association and that number may grow. In Cranbrook, there are large amounts of anhydrous ammonia going right through the city.

That particular chemical has had a role in tragedy before, as noted in the August 19th edition of the Daily Townsman.

The price of profitability, besides people losing their jobs, has been high. According to CP Rail, train accidents have jumped 24 per cent since these measures have been put in place. Remember, a large part of the carmens’ job is safety.

How can these cuts be made then? Some are pointing to the Harper government’s cutting the safety budget for railroads from $36.9 million to $33.8 million. Some are going back further, to the Liberal government of 1999 that eliminated the role of Transport Canada in railroad oversight, giving the railroads the power to

self-police. That particular piece of legislation caused the Canada Safety Council to issue a report way back in 2007 that warned about an impending rail disaster because of the deregulation. Of course, that report was resoundingly ignored.

So the railway is making profits hand over fist while it is increasing the capacity and frequency of its trains, many of them carrying dangerous or environmentally hazardous goods—and it cuts safety inspectors.

The railway has already cut around 3,500 jobs in total this year nationally on its way to its goal of 6,500.

That is 6,500 people who will lose good paying jobs and 6,500 people not contributing nearly as much to the Canadian economy.

“We can go higher than that,” CP Rail chief executive Hunter Harrison said about the cuts.

He should have said “lower than that,” because government cutting regulations or oversight funds is not the cause behind the country’s or Cranbrook’s recent layoffs. It was all about the bottom line—pity that line doesn’t factor in the workers.

A new 18-centimetre colour touch stereo with navigation and USB port can be had on virtually every model, while new driver convenience packages include a number of useful options such as power seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rear-vision camera and more. The rest of the interior remains a highly attractive seating area that wouldn’t look out of place in a more expensive sedan. There are plastic pieces to be sure, but they’re more than offset by plenty of soft-touch coverings for the wrap-around dashboard and silvery painted trim for the steering column, door-mounted speaker surrounds, steering

wheel and shifter. Given the added size and fancier seating area, it’s surprising that the Cruze’s standard and optional powerplants are so diminutive. The base car is equipped with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder that produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the LT and LTZ you’ll get and a smaller — less is more here — 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that’s also rated at 138 horsepower but with 25 pound-feet more torque than the base engine.

The 1.8 offers a choice of a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo is only available with the automatic.

option. Tasteful design and decent function highlight the 2013 Soul that continues into the new model year after an inside/outside refresh for 2012. The entrylevel 1.6-litre four-cylinder was taken from the Rio sedan and produces 138 horsepower, while the optional 2.0-litre delivers 164.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard while a six-speed automatic is optional, but standard on the higher trims. The base 1.6 L model has a fair amount of equipment (power items, heated seats and Bluetooth connectivity), but no air conditioning. For that, you’ll have to get the Soul 2u, which also adds the bigger engine, wild-looking

patterned seat fabric and bigger wheels. The Soul 4u adds to its inventory even bigger wheels, premium audio system, sport-tuned suspension backup camera. The 4u Luxury adds navigation, leather seats and climate control. Fully loaded, you’ll be crowding $30,000, which puts you in the higher end of the Optima range.

Rhea May Howard (Nee Norton) Feb. 27, 1938 - Aug. 15, 2013 It is with deep sorrow that the family of Rhea Howard announce her passing on Thursday Aug 15,2013 in Prince Rupert B.C. Rhea is survived by her four daughters; Joyce Howard (Regina), Terri & Merv ( Prince Rupert), Rhea & Peter Steiner (Yukon), and Kelly Howard (Prince Rupert).

Rhea's 5 grandchildren Robert/ April (Regina), Marcus and Dain Steiner and Baylee Howard (Yukon) and Kelsey Howard (Prince Rupert). Rhea's 6 great grandchildren; Hope, Victory, Emily, Alyssa, Cadance, and Steele.

Mom was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Rhea loved baking and cooking and we're sure most people would agree that she was a great cook. Every summer Mom would cook for the "famous" horseshoe tournaments at the lake. Mom also loved fishing, especially ice fishing with Dad and family. Rhea was an advid reader, loved playing bridge with the gals and enjoyed a good laugh. Rhea was also very active in the Wasa community. She was involved with the Wasa Youth Group, Girl Guides, was an elected district Director for the RDEK, and a member of the committee that put together the local history book Kootenay Ripples. Rhea was very straight forward and had a very generous heart. She will be forever missed.

Rhea was predeceased by her husband Bud Howard and her mother May Norton.

By Mom's request there will be no service.
