Each week for the next couple of months, RE/MAX Country Lakes Realty is challenging the community to help it collect food and other products for needy families in the South Cariboo. RE/MAX realtor Diane Cober says every week, the local real estate office is collecting donations of non-perishable food and personal items, in an attempt to fill a shopping cart located in its front office area. “We’d like to say: ‘help us fill the basket’. Whatever someone brings in – even a can of salmon – we will match it. So, this is doubled.” These donations

Whether you’re spending your summer vacation relaxing in your backyard or adventuring into the British Columbia wilderness, the BC SPCA wants to show off your best B.C. wildlife pictures. Amateur photographers can enter the Fifth Annual WildlifeIn-Focus Photography Contest by submitting digital photos until Sept. 30. The contest is a fundraiser supporting the society’s Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC) on southern Vancouver Island,

where more than 2,500 orphaned and injured wild animals are cared for every year. “With the nation’s greatest diversity of wildlife in our own province, we are excited to help backyard and

For instance, they help with the Cariboo-Chilcotin Partners for Literacyâ€™s Bright Red Bookshelves program by cleaning the books and putting stickers on them. Tendinopathy can cramp your style

With the warm weather still with us, we are still doing outside activities such as tennis and running. A common injury for tennis players and runners is tendinopathy – damage to a muscle tendon, the most common of which affects the elbow (tennis elbow) and the Achilles tendon. British Columbia’s physiotherapists want to share their Physio-4 for tendinopathy – four tips on how to prevent and treat it, to keep British Columbians moving for life. “Pain is a guiding factor for determining the severity of tendinopathy,” says Rebecca Tunnacliffe, chief executive officer of the Physiotherapy

Association of BC. “By listening to your physiotherapist and your body and by following the Physio-4 for Tendinopathy, you can help to prevent tendinopathy from occurring or re-occurring.” • Our tissues can break down and become painful when there are forces loading them that they cannot adapt to. For example, starting a training program too fast and without adequate rest can put undue strain on ligaments, tendons, and muscles in your shoulders, Achilles and elbow. See your physiotherapist about adding a gentle warm up to prevent injury. Continued on 14

All-day power outage caused by motor vehicle incident

A power outage spanning from at least 70 Mile House to Lone Butte left many folks without electricity all day Aug. 7. BC Hydro media relations representative Dave Mosure says the power went out at 11:14 a.m. with 110 people affected both east and west of Highway 97, due to a motor vehicle incident (MVI). Crews then went to work to restore the service, he explains, and the bulk of the customers had their power back on by about 9 p.m. The remaining five customers had power restored by shortly after 11 p.m., Mosure adds. 70 Mile Store operator Krista Viera says her business on Highway 97 was unaffected, but the houses running along North Bonaparte Road starting next door to her were all out of power all day. Lone Butte rancher Ann Armann says

she was affected, as a huge pot of meat was ruined when the electricity went off as she was outside doing ranch chores. She notes her misfortune began when her goats inadvertently unplugged a meat freezer, so Armann had worked quickly that same morning to prepare a huge slow-cooked meal, to preserve and refreeze

Seniors have a great game Ken Alexander Free Press

Eighteen seniors showed up for Seniors Day at the 108 Golf Resort on Aug. 15 and played a game of par points. Hollis Ney was first for the ladies, with Maureen Menzies and Pauline Weigelt tied for second and third place. On the men’s side, Ron Graves was first, with Ed Ney and Dave Funk finishing second and third respectively. The season is coming to the end and the Seniors Club is having its windup on Sept. 12. Club spokesperson Angie Wahnschaff says the club would like to say thanks to the 108 Golf Resort pro Andy Wahnschaff and his staff for all of their help every week and all his advice – it was greatly appreciated.

Western Financial Group’s annual Support the Cause Day Walk this spring raised a record $137,845, compared to just under $90,000 in 2012. The recently announced results included money raised by all seven local employees, who joined the 100 Mile House team for the five-kilometre walk, bringing in a total of $405.

Local Western Financial manager Jennifer Appleby says the Western Community Fund assists local community projects, bursaries and programs. “The foundation has been around for 10 or 12 years, and the walk is one of our bigger fundraisers. It’s a way for the entire company to get involved.” Locally, Exceptional Achievement Bursaries have been awarded in 2012 and 2013 to Peter

This is then topped up by pledges employees personally gathered from members of their community. More than 1,500 Western Financial Group employees from more than 100 locations across Western Canada participated in the 2013 walk.

Campfires to be allowed within Cariboo Fire Centre At noon on Aug. 20, the campfire ban throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC) was rescinded due to a decreased risk of wildfires. The public is reminded campfires cannot be larger than a half-metre high by a half-metre wide. Anyone who lights a campfire must have a hand tool, such as a shovel, or at least eight litres of water available to fully extinguish it. Never leave a campfire unattended and make sure that the ashes are completely cold to the touch before leaving the area. Fireworks, tiki torches and sky lanterns will also be permitted, as well as burning barrels that are smaller than a half-metre high by a half-metre wide. All other open burning remains prohibited within the CFC. This includes: • The burning of any

material larger than a half-metre-high by a half-metre wide. • The burning of industrial or backyard waste, slash, stubble or grass. Anyone found in violation of open-burning prohibition may be issued a ticket of up to $345 or, if convicted in court, be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes a wildfire, the person may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and ordered to pay all firefighting and associated

costs. The CFC stretches from Loon Lake near Clinton, north to the Cottonwood River near Quesnel, east to Wells Gray Provincial Park and west to Tweedsmuir South Provincial Park. The open-burning prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have forest fire prevention bylaws and are serviced by fire departments. Check with local governments for any other

restrictions before lighting a fire. The open-burning prohibition will remain in place until Sept. 30 or until the public is informed otherwise. To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or non-compliant open burning, call 1-800-663-
