Brenda Tyson was recently appointed principal of TM Roberts Elementary School as of the 2013/14 school year by the School District 5 (SD5) Board of Education. Born in Cranbrook, Tyson received her Bachelor of Education in Lethbridge, Alberta. Returning to teach in BC in 1996, Tyson joined SD5 in 1999. She has served as viceprincipal at both Mount Baker Secondary and most recently at Parkland Middle School. “I’ve enjoyed working with middle and secondary students, staff and parents as well as our numerous community partners. I look forward to working at the elementary level using the same collaborative vision and a focus on 21st Century learning.” SD5 Board Chair, Frank Lento, says Tyson is a strong leader, especially when it comes to professional development. Tyson is a former Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kootenay member with involvement in both the Santa Claus parade and Sam Steele ball tournament.

It has been pointed out that the Kootenay Advertiser’s latest Hunting and Wildlife guide does not have the new regulations for antlerless elk. This is because the guide was printed before the regulations were released. farming more accessible. The Creston Valley campus’ new Kootenay Farm School is being designed to bring people together to discover, teach, and support agriculture on a human scale. COTR’s Kootenay Farm School will focus on practical, community-based learning, from evening talks and weekend workshops to a ten-month beginner farmer training program. “We know that we need a farming crash course in the Kootenays,” says Farm School Coordinator Nigel Francis. “This will be one of only a handful of similar programs in Canada. Our goal is to offer an innovative, intensive, comprehensive education for new agricultural entrepreneurs.” The part-time farmer training program will allow students to experience a full Kootenay growing season and equip themselves with the know-how to start farming. Instructors and mentor farmers will help students gain footing in plant science, soil stewardship, crop production, animal husbandry, small farm technology, farm planning, and business and marketing fundamentals. “We will be teaching farming as a science, business, art, and way of life,” Francis continues. “Our students will get their hands dirty on small farms all over the Kootenays. They will network with like minds and hopefully build friendships and community.” Kootenay Farm School will begin offering workshops this fall. Topics include advanced seed saving, permaculture food foresting, fourseason harvesting and scaling up production on small farms. The 10-month program will launch in February 2014. To learn more about learning, teaching, or partnering with College of the Rockies’ Kootenay Farm School, visit www. cotr.bc.ca/KootenayFarm-School or www.facebook.com/ KootenayFarmSchool or see us at the following events this fall: • Aug. 23 – Market Fest (Nelson)

3 Facts you need to Know About... the Powerex Settlement...
1. In 2000-01, California de-regulated its electricity market, resulting in rolling blackouts and record-high electricity prices. BC Hydro’s trading arm, Powerex, sold electricity to California, earning hundreds of millions for the NDP government. California still owed $265 million to Powerex. 2. The US federal regulator determined a decade ago that the electricity market was manipulated by parties like Enron and that companies like Powerex had to pay back millions. Powerex has been in court in the US since 2001. Canadian litigants do not do well in the US court system, as learned from the Softwood Lumber experience. 3. The settlement I signed off on as BC’s Energy Minister gets BC credit for the $265 million owing to BC ($477 million with interest). BC is paying California $273 million cash, for a total settlement of $750 million. The California parties were sueing BC for $3.2 billion – too great a risk to the BC tax payer. The Shrubs That Keep on Blooming
As promised last week, we will have a closer look at some of the re-blooming shrubs in today’s column. There are some flowering shrubs that can be deadheaded to encourage a second flush of blooms. Not all shrubs, however, respond to pruning with a second flowering period, but cutting off the spent blooms - such as the browned spikes of lilacs - can keep your shrubs looking neat and tidy. Shrubs in the Weigela family are great little flowering plants. They are some of the best shrubs to attract hummingbirds with their trumpet-shaped flowers - some even with fragrance. Weigelas bloom in mid spring and if deadheaded, they can have a second flush in the fall. There are many exciting new varieties in garden centres this season, their fancy names telling you what you need to know. ‘Rainbow Sensation’ has variegated foliage and soft pink flowers that give you a rainbow of colour all season. ‘Wings of Fire’ has leaves that open with a faint flush of pink in the spring and take on more and more red until late summer when they are awash with fiery red. This is nicely complemented by cool pink flowers. One of the most exciting additions are the weigelas of the ‘Sonic Bloom’ variety. These beauties are the first true re-blooming weigelas - no deadheading required to keep this plant blooming until frost. The trumpet-shaped flowers come in a lipstick red and hot pink. There is also a revolutionary new lilac, fittingly called ‘Bloomerang’ in the nursery. It blooms in the spring and then again throughout the summer. While the plant goes through a rest period in the heat of summer, this lilac’s fragrant flowers return mid-season and continue right up until frost, turning heads and noses alike. Their blooms are abundant, making this plant ideal for cut flowers. The summer and fall blooms are a bit smaller than the spring flowers, but still put on a spectacular show. Every branch bears flowers and as long as the plant continues to grow, it continues to flower. Pruning is not necessary to get Bloomerang to rebloom, however, a light shearing after the initial spring flowering results in a fuller plant with more branches and consequently more fragrant flowers. This is a mounded variety with small leaves that reaches only about four to five feet in height and therefore fits easily into smaller gardens. It is ideal as a foundation planting or as part of a mixed border. Bloomerang can even be included into perennial beds. We go from the largest to the smallest unexpected fall bloomers. Normally, we associate crocus with the beginning of spring, but as the season comes to a close, colchicum and autumn crocus make their debut. They come in a number of different varieties and colours and grow great in our area. These are fabulous bulbs to grow, but you have to be patient; now is the time you plant these bulbs, but they will only bloom for you next fall. You will see the bulbs growing leaves throughout the spring, but mid summer these will die back and disappear. In September or even early October, the magnificent blooms of the crocus will suddenly pop out of the ground. They will grow for weeks and get to a size anywhere from a large crocus to a good-sized tulip. As they lack leaves, fall blooming bulbs are very showy and exotic looking. Caring for fall crocus and colchicum could not be easier. These bulbs do not have to be dug up, they do not require any special fertilizer and they will not become invasive. After a few years, you might even be able to divide your patch to share with friends or start them in another location. Colour your yard this fall - experts at your local garden centre can show you how. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin
