Lacombe band looks forward to next album Tap 9 focuses on crafting original material as next project takes shape

t’s often said that everything that can be done in music has already been done, but that hasn’t stopped a local music group from expanding their own creative horizons.

Tony Hoffman, Grant Harder, Orion Donison, Brad Harsent and Steve Tanner, together known as Tap 9, are bringing a classical sound back to modern rock.

Donison, guitarist for the group, said the band started as a way for them to get together, jam and have fun while expressing themselves and their creativity.

Now, with the band having released its first selfentitled album, that focus has shifted a bit.

Tanner, who plays bass guitar for the group, said the group is at a point where they need to gain some exposure and build their fan base in order to create a second album.

“You’ve got to make money if you want to make a second album,” said Tanner.

While it has been difficult for the band to tour with all the members holding full-time jobs, they have managed to gain some exposure.

Harder, the group’s saxophonist, said that the band has done a few larger gigs, such as with Red Deer’s Canada Day events as well as some corporate gigs and the odd bar.

Hoffman said that, since being released on iTunes, the group has also seen sales all over North America, Europe and even into South America.

He added the group has also managed to get some regular radio-play on stations like CBC, has been featured on a few Rhapsody playlists and is up to 2,600 hits on the YouTube

“We’re not making a lot of money every time it plays, but at least we are being heard,” said Hoffman.

With the band beginning to focus on creating a second album, Harder said they may be at a point where they will have to start touring a little more to get some cash support for the project.

Tap 9 started about three years ago when its members, who are all long-time musicians, wanted to focus on creating original music.

Harsent, who had played together before in a large band, started jamming together and were soon joined by Donison, Tanner and Harder.

Before long, the men were rehearsing and writing original songs as a group.

“It was all about originals,” said Hoffman.

Harsent agreed.

“We have all played covers before,” Harsent and Hoffman said that as they and the other members of Tap 9 had played in cover bands previously, they wanted an opportunity be more cre-

ative with their music and try things they hadn’t had the opportunity to do before.

“Doing original music showcases talent,” said Harsent.

Talent is something the group has in spades, along with experience.

Each member of the band had played with other musical groups long before Tap 9 came into existence.

While none of Tap 9’s members are career musicians, they all have pursued a passion for music most of their lives. Combined, the group has well over 100 years of experience.

As such, it hasn’t taken Tap 9 long to gel together and showcase its talent as a band rather than just a group of individuals.

Tanner, who plays bass for the group, said this is evident in how the band crafts their original songs.

“When we first got together it might have taken two or three months to polish a song to a finished product,” said Tanner.

“Now we can have a song ready in one or two rehearsals.”

Tap 9’s sound could be described as unique, yet familiar.

It’s a confusing idea

that makes itself clear after hearing the band play.

While the songs are all original, the sound is classical, hence Tanner says Tap 9 is an original rock band in the style of classic rock.

Hoffman agreed.

He said that he has heard audiences say how nice it is to hear things like a saxophonist in a rock group, as was common in rock songs from previous decades.

New transit service to connect communities Lacombe, Blackfalds and Red Deer will soon be accessible to each other via public transit as approved on Tuesday by Red Deer City council.

After much consideration and evaluation, the transit project will go ahead with the purchase of two buses for a cost of $900,000.

The cost will be shared with Lacombe and Blackfalds sharing one-third of the cost, and Red Deer would reassign the GreenTRIP funds to the project.

For Lacombe, this means better inter-city and intracity travel at a reasonable cost to both citizens using the service, and taxpayers.

Lacombe Mayor Steve Christie said the idea came about when bus service was discontinued to the smaller communities

through Greyhound.

“What used to happen was people would get on the bus in the morning and then catch it back when the schedule permitted, when that ended students, seniors and other citizens were left without any transportation,” said Christie.

Travel will be easy between the municipalities with nine stops planned for Lacombe when the project reaches its fully planned capacity, but the initial start-up may see only four to six stops in Lacombe.

Christie has supported the project from the beginning and agrees with the vision of the project and the idea of reducing the environmental impact of urban travel. The challenges of this project include the upfront capital costs and the fact that transit commuting is often more time-consuming than simply taking a personal vehicle.

He said he believes this service is something that will fill a great need and he thanks the councils that have worked together to not let this project die.

“We all came through and it’s looking like something we can see through to the end.”

He also said it is important for those who do continue to commute to and

from Lacombe to acknowledge the new signage at Hwy. 2A and 46th Ave. “We just want to highlight to citizens and people in and around Lacombe that this is a recent upgrade and that it’s important to familiarize themselves with the intersection.”

The light just went fully operational on Aug. 20th and Christie said they are doing everything to make the intersection as safe as possible for the growing community and vehicle population.

The Town of Blackfalds now has a taxi bylaw following a vote by council.

At its regular meeting earlier this month, council for the Town of Blackfalds gave second and third reading to an amended version of the bylaw which was first presented to council on July 9.

Blackfalds’ taxi bylaw incorporates ideas from the taxi bylaws of several other municipalities, such as Lacombe and Red Deer, throughout the province.

Its purpose is to manage the licensing and control of taxis within the town.

Before being presented to council on Aug. 13, the bylaw was amended to address concerns brought up by council at the July 9 meeting.

One amendment was made that taxis must have their rates clearly posted for patrons to view.

In response to Councillor Richard Poole’s concern that that the bylaw’s definition of a ‘qualified applicant’ would deter new drivers from moving to Blackfalds to make a living, the definition was then changed to mean anyone approved to have a taxi or broker license in the Town of Blackfalds.

Prior to the amendment, a ‘qualified applicant’ was a person who had worked in the taxi industry as a driver or broker for at least two consecutive years of 1,200 hours prior to person’s application.

Poole, who opposed giving the bylaw first reading on July 9, said that he was glad to see changes made to accommodate new drivers and agreed that the Town of Blackfalds was in need of such a bylaw.

However, Poole also stated that he was not completely satisfied with the amended bylaw either.

Two points of the bylaw still caused concern for Poole.

First was the use of the word ‘character’.

Poole said the word was ambiguous and not defined in the bylaw.

He also said it was unnecessary as every aspect of a driver’s behaviour is already controlled within the bylaw and that the word should either not be used or be defined within the bylaw.

Poole also took issue with the appeal process of the bylaw where appeals on decisions made by the license inspector be made to the CAO. Instead, Poole suggested that another body, such as the council sub-committee that already deals with grievances, be appointed to deal with appeals as it is in most of the other taxi bylaws he mentioned.

In response to Poole’s concerns, council voted to further amend the taxi bylaw to define the word ‘character’ and appoint a sub-committee to hear appeals before giving it first and second readings.

All the votes to make further amendments and to give first and second reading to the further amended bylaw were unanimous.

Lacombe Corn Maze salutes Tour of Alberta

BY ERIN FAWCETT Lacombe Express The Lacombe Corn Maze has made a nod to a major event coming to Central Alberta next month.

“It’s fantastic,” said Rachel Kraay, one of the owners of the Kraay Family Farm.

“Alberta is hosting Canada’s first major international professional stage race. We couldn’t wait to be a part of it and look forward to hosting a number of events that relate to the event.”

The Kraay Family Farm will celebrate the Tour of Alberta with a special ‘Tour Day’ including a bike trail around the maze, food and other special activities.

“We also will invite the families of the racers to experience some authentic farming fun while they are here in Alberta,” she said. “The Tour will draw athletes that have competed in many of the world’s top races. It’s very exciting.”

The Tour of Alberta is a major international professional cycling race and the province’s first taste of the growing global sport of cycling.

Red Deer will be a part of Stage Two of the event on Sept. 5.

The cyclists will be starting in Devon and finishing in Red Deer. Riders will enter Red Deer on Hwy. 11 to 30 Ave., then turn south on 30th to Ross St. Heading west on Ross St. they will enter the downtown loop at the corner of Ross St. and 40th Ave. Riders will complete the loop three

Something that has generated a lot of discussion and debate lately is Lacombe’s Solid Waste Roadmap. While the Lacombe

Express has written several stories and even an editorial or two regarding this topic, it is not something we wish to influence people’s opinions of one way or the other.

What we do want to influence people to do is make themselves heard and share their own opinions.

Whatever decision is made by Lacombe City council in September, it will affect all of Lacombians.

As such, any Lacombian who has any opinion about the Solid Waste Roadmap should make themselves heard.

And they do want to hear from you. City of Lacombe administration have gone to great lengths to both educate the public and listen to feedback, but they can’t force you to make yourself heard.

New 2013 election requirements for this fall Most of us are aware that the 2013 Lacombe elections are being held on Oct. 21, but there are some who may not be aware that changes have been made to the provincial nomination and voter identification and eligibility requirements.

Time is running out to share your thoughts on the matter with the City of

MacQUARRIE Potential candidates are advised that the term of office for local elected officials has now been increased to four years. As well, new nomination requirements state that the returning officer shall not accept a nomination form if it is not signed by at least the minimum number of electors.

Candidates are also reminded that they must submit their nomination documents to the Returning Officer at City Hall Council Chambers from 8 a.m. till noon on Nomination Day, Sept. 23.

There is now an additional requirement for a citizen to provide

proof of identity and current residence in order to vote. An elector must produce one piece of identification that establishes both the elector’s name and current residential address. An elector may vote after producing government issued identification containing the elector’s photograph, current residential address and name. This includes an Operator’s (Driver’s) Licence or an Alberta Identification Card for non-drivers.

Types of chief electoral officerapproved identification allowed must show the name and address of the elector. Types of authorized identification include: • bank/credit card statement or personal cheque • correspondence issued by a school, college or university • government cheque or cheque stub • income/property tax assessment notice • insurance policy or coverage card • letter from a public curator, public guardian or public trustee • one of the following, issued by the responsible authority of a shel-

ter or soup kitchen: attestation of residence, letter of stay, admission form or statement of benefits • pension plan statement of benefits, contributions or participation • prescription bottle insert • residential lease or mortgage statement • statement of government benefits, e.g. employment insurance, old-age security, social assistance, disability support or child tax benefit • utility bill, e.g. telephone, public utilities commission, television, hydro, gas or water • vehicle ownership or insurance certificate To accommodate residents’ schedules, the City of Lacombe is offering advance-voting opportunities for voters. The first advance poll will be held on Oct. 16 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. The second advance poll is on Oct. 19 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. also in the City Hall Council Chambers.

Again, Oct. 21 is election day, and eligible electors can vote at the main polling station in the Lacombe Memorial Centre (5214-52

Ave.), from 8 a.m. till 8 p.m. Also, there will be two institutional polling stations set up, one located at Lacombe Hospital & Care Centre (5430-47 Ave.) from 9 a.m. till noon, and the other at the Lacombe Senior Citizen’s Lodge (4508 C+E Trail) from 2 p.m. till 5 p.m. As well, a mobile poll will be established for incapacitated voters in our community so that they too can vote on election day. I encourage all residents to get engaged and participate in this very important civic process. Your vote is the way you choose someone to represent you in municipal government. By this simple act, you are exercising a fundamental democratic right for which generations of Canadians have fought hard for, so that we can live in a free society.

Families encouraged to check out Alberta Open Farm Days

BY KIRSTEN PALARDY Lacombe Express For families, couples or individuals looking for something to do this weekend, there is a great opportunity to take in some local agriculture.

Alberta Open Farm Days is a first time event, but Richard Starke, minister of tourism and recreation for Alberta, said he hopes to see it become an annual event.

“It’s just a great opportunity for Albertans to go out to participating farms for a visit and to have a look at essentially

where our food comes from,” said Starke.

Saturday’s focus is in cooperation with some of the best chefs in the area demonstrating things that can be done with the food being produced here in Alberta.

Starke said the Ellis Bird Farm in the Lacombe area will be supporting local growers through their locally inspired menu from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. “Reservations are recommended for sure for Saturday’s events as they fill up fast.”

“There are culinary events right across the province - everything from the huckleberry festival to Ukrainian foods being served.”

On Sunday the 25th, however, the idea is more of a farm open house. There are 40 producers province-wide opening their farms to visitors and Starke said the range of events is extraordinary. “We have cattle and bison ranches, petting zoos, wineries and meateries, dairies, not just cattle but sheep and goat dairies too.”

The diversity of agricultural production in Alberta is amazing according to Starke and the plan with Alberta Open Farm Days is to highlight that.

“We want to let people know it’s a great way to spend an afternoon. Our society has become so urbanized and fewer people have direct connections to farms. It’s important people get out and see truly where their food is coming from.”

He added that many of the producers do sell their product right on their farms, but that some of it is also available locally in stores as well.

“Our producers are very skilled and passionate and they produce something to be proud of and that boasts excellence.”

Starke recommends that people visit the web site and see what is closest to them in order to plan a day out where they can maybe visit two or three different farms showcasing diverse products. Other provinces have been hosting open farm days since 2001 with much success, and Starke said he is excited for the potential here

in Alberta. “We are starting out with just 40 which I think is a great number, but in coming years I think we will see that number grow.”

He said those farms that have gotten involved were happy to do so and he said most producers are more than anxious to show off what they do because they’re so proud of the product that they work so hard for. “This gives people a specific day that they know they’re welcome to go to the farms, look at the animals or the crops and find out more information from the producers regarding the challenges and their achievements.”

Starke referred to the 100 mile diet where more and more people are trying to eat food that they can account for its origins within a local range.

“People eating this way want to know that there is a variety of product available locally for consumption and they want to know that there is quality in these products too.”

He added that the less a product travels the better it is not only for the environment but also for consumers.

“It’s more fresh because it’s closer to the source. Anyone who cooks with it will say if you can work with local and fresh foods it just tastes better.”

He said he would encourage people to visit the web site and have a look at the participating farms in their areas and make a day trip and take their children too so they can see where their food comes from as well.

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express For those looking to improve their health and try something a bit different, Taoist Tai Chi may be something to consider.

Larry Gillard, a Tai Chi instructor with the Red Deer Taoist Society, said that he has seen, and felt first-hand the health benefits of doing Taoist Tai Chi. “You do leave class feeling better than when you came in.”

In 2004, he started feeling like his body wasn’t working quite like it used to. It took just a little bit more effort to do things, like reaching into the bottom of a bin wasn’t as easy as it should have been for example.

“Things just weren’t quite like they were back in the day,” said Gillard. He added he tried to think of ways to improve flexibility and thought of Tai Chi as he had heard it was all about stretching and improving flexibility.

After hearing an advertisement on the radio and working up the courage, Gillard attended his first Tai Chi class. He said he was very uncomfortable and the movements of Tai Chi felt very unfamiliar to him that first night, but added it didn’t take long for things to fall into place.

“I was one of those lucky people it just clicked with,” said Gillard. He added that those feelings of discomfort and unfamiliarity are common for many first-time Tai Chi practitioners.

Gillard said the reason for this is that the structures and body positions of Tai Chi are very opposite to what is normally done with the body in western society.

Instead, Tai Chi is the eastern philosophy on the body, said Gillard.

There are many types of Tai Chi. Despite Tai Chi technically being considered a martial art, Taoist (pronounced DA-o-ist) Tai Chi, the kind Gillard practices, is non-combative.

son’s body behave the same way it did as a newborn child. He said ideally, the body is supple, has had no damage done to it and has no bad habits.

Unique showcase of home-grown art at the MAG

BY MARK WEBER Lacombe Express A new exhibit showcasing original prints and rarely seen works by James Agrell Smith is now on display at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery.

‘James Agrell Smith: A Broader Picture: Drawings, Paintings and Original Prints’ runs through to Nov. 11 with an opening reception and a talk with curator Mary Beth Laviolette set for Sept. 29 at 2 p.m.

Agrell Smith, who passed away in 1988, was born in Stettler in 1913. This centenary exhibition of Agrell Smith is the first comprehensive survey of his original prints and rarely seen works on paper and paintings.

Working in sumi-ink, wood engraving, woodcuts and woodblock prints, his subjects range from black and white portraits, self-portraits and figures to native scenes and prairie farm landscapes.

He was also a writer and illustrator, and he retired from working in the post office in 1970. He passed away in Red Deer at the age of 75.

“He was essentially a self-taught artist,” explains Lorna Johnson, executive direc-

tor of the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery.

“At the age of 17, he joined the Navy. So he had the opportunity to travel. In his journals, he mentions New York and London as being where, when he was on leave, he would go to the art galleries and look at all the works of the old masters.”

With Agrell Smith’s birth being in 1913, the same year the City of Red Deer was incorporated, a showcase of his work seemed absolutely appropriate as well. “It’s a wonderful local story. And it’s a chapter in our history that isn’t really told.”

Laviolette was then brought onboard to research, arrange and produce the exhibit.

“What surprised me in the exhibition is that I knew him as a wood engraver, but the paintings we had never seen,” adds Johnson. There are indeed powerful paintings done of a sailor (Portrait of a Red-Bearded Sailor) and another of Agrell Smith’s wife, done in elegant profile against a shimmering blue sky. Another, entitled Sailors’ Reunion, is also compelling in its gritty, ‘real life’ sensibilities.

Of course, his wood engravings are perhaps most recognizable - the detail to his craft in this regard is amazing as is the capturing of personalities in each and ev-

ery piece from Boy with a Book to The Man From Big Stone.

“They are so unusual, because when you think of that time, the 1970s, what most artists were doing in this region were landscapes, not people.” The folks in the wood engraving works are somewhat stylized images, not sitting for their portraits, said Johnson. “It really goes back to an old tradition of sketching people from life.

“He’s got that slight abstraction, but he’s interested in ordinary people.”

Another fantastic example of his talent shines in Reflection on a Great-Grandfather – done as both a wood engraving and an extraordinary painting. The painting is particularly eye-catching, with its reflection of Agrell Smith subtly captured in the portrait itself.

His gift for portraiture again is reflected in paintings of both himself (The Revenant – Self at Stettler) and another of his wife in later years. The one at Stettler shows him standing in a lonely field just outside of town.

Johnson said Agrell Smith’s son, who lives in Edmonton, made several of his father’s paintings available for the exhibit.

Other pieces come from private collections.

There is an unmistakable uniqueness to his work – his renderings of individuals are striking in their quality and style.

It’s clear that Agrell Smith really noticed people around him and brought those reflections to his artistic interpretations.

“We can see from some of his sketches that he would sometimes sketch people as they came into the post office.” One piece includes a photo of him during his last day of work there before retiring, and the photo is surrounded by small, simple sketches of figures and faces that must have caught his eye during the day-to-day routines of working there over the years.

Ultimately, Agrell Smith’s approach to creativity is what stands out most when one peruses his work. “I think it’s one of the advantages of being a self-taught artist. He didn’t have any pre-conceptions of what an image should look like, he invented it all for himself. It’s really quite wonderful. “It’s also so great to be able to explore the works of a local person, and there have been so many surprises in this – that’s been what’s really exciting about it.”

Ultimately, no one really summed up the experiences of an artist better than Agrell Smith himself. It’s clear he received much fulfillment in his range of subjects and genres that he was so gifted in.

Breakaway Training helps elite athletes reach their goals

BY BRIAN VOSSEN Lacombe Express For many players, sport is more than just a game.

Here in Lacombe, many hockey players tend to follow this creed. For them, and other elite athletes looking to improve their skills in the off-season, there is Breakaway Training.

Breakaway Training, which is currently holding its month-long hockey camp, is a program developed by Lacombian Jason Petrie to help elite athletes.

Petrie said his objective with Breakaway is to help young people reach a higher level of athleticism.

“It’s all about them being in a position where they are physically ready to be their best,” said Petrie. “That’s all I want from them and for them so that they can showcase their talents.”

As such, Breakaway focuses heavily on the physical aspects of sport.

In addition to on-ice training, Petrie also does dry-land training where he works on conditioning with athletes and also helps them develop speed, agility and strength.

Breakaway is more than just a hockey camp.

Petrie said it is difficult to explain, but it is something like a cross between sports camp and personal training. He said that as each individual athlete’s needs are different he needs to tailor different programs for everyone he works with.

“Breakaway Training believes that the athlete comes first,” said Petrie. “The athlete’s needs are central, they are the primary driving force to what I do.”

Having worked with many successful hockey players, some of them now in the NHL, as well as other elite athletes, Petrie said he takes pride knowing he may have

helped them towards their goals just a little bit. “It makes me feel good that I had just a little bit to do with it maybe.”

It’s not just hockey players that Petrie works with through Breakaway either. He said that he can develop programs for any sport through knowledge of biomechanics.

Traits like power, speed, and agility are things Petrie can work on with any athlete regardless of sport. He added that the reason he focuses on hockey is simply because hockey is the most popular sport in the area.

Petrie said he came up with the idea for Breakaway Hockey Camp while working with a number of minor hockey teams. He said his son was also going through the minor hockey program, and Petrie looked into some hockey camps for his son to continue building skills during the summer.

What Petrie found was that many hockey camps are good at building skills, but

not long or intensive enough. He said that when players enroll in a one-week hockey school during the summer, they build skills during that week, but then lose a lot of what they gained in the weeks spent off the ice before the season begins.

So, Petrie came up with the idea for a longer camp that would be held at the end of the summer. That way, not only do players get to spend more time practicing skills and have a better chance of retaining that knowledge, they also have less time off the ice in between camp and the start of the hockey season.

Petrie added that holding the camp for a month at the end of the summer also gives families a chance to go on holidays before coming back for hockey camp.

He also said that he offers discounted rates for those players who cannot attend the full week of camp.
