Wo W men in BUSIN NESS
A celebration of West Kootenay/ Boundary women & the businesses they represent
Starting a business is no small task. But as the 21st century progresses, more and more female entrepreneurs are embracing the challenge of starting their own businesses. Though each entrepreneur has his or her own motivation for starting a business, the chance to be your own boss and turn an idea into a successful business is a driving force for both male and female entrepreneurs. The continued success of female entrepreneurs has shed new light on just how successful female entrepreneurs can be. The following are a few tips for women looking to start their own business. * Seek out a mentor. Many female entrepreneurs have blazed the trail you are about to embark on, and such women can prove an invaluable resource as you begin your journey. Find a female business owner you can connect with and ask her for any advice she can offer. She might not be able to help you with any specifics regarding your business, but she can very well share stories of what you can expect as a woman setting out to start her own business.
tips for female
entrepreneurs
* Have an airtight business plan. As unjust as it is, a stigma about women in the workplace still exists in the minds of some professionals. This means women must be especially diligent and detailed when creating their business plan. One helpful hint is to act as if you are pitching yourself. Look at your business plan and ask if you would invest in yourself. Ask yourself the questions you would ask a fellow entrepreneur if he or she approached you with the same business plan you just developed. There’s no harm to be done by using every resource at your disposal, especially your own business savvy and experience. * Don’t expect to finance the business entirely on your own. Unless your business is going to be especially small, you’re going to need capital to start your business. If you think you can finance the business on your own, you might want to reconsider. A business loan or investors can help you plan for the unexpected. If you attempt to go it alone, open your business and then find you need a business loan, the lending institution might find your brand has already been damaged and is less likely to succeed. That can make it harder to secure a business loan. Though it’s possible to finance your business entirely out of your own pocket, it never hurts to partner up with a bank or a handful of investors. * Rely on your support system. Many women with business experience might feel they need to prove something to themselves when starting their own business and need to do so entirely on their own. While that’s great motivation, underestimating the value of your support system, including your spouse, children and even your mentor, is a mistake. Rely on these people who all want you to succeed, and turn their support into extra motivation.

ingerie is often referred to as “intimate apparel” and no one knows why better than Cheryl and her amazing staff at Esprit de la Femme Lingerie.
“Our store is like Vegas, whatever goes on in here, stays in here,” says Cheryl, who opened the store 12 years ago to fill a need in Nelson for fine lingerie. And a lot does go on at Esprit de la Femme. Every bra for every woman is customfitted. That’s a very personal experience and Cheryl and staffers Jody, Katherine and Rachel take that responsibility very seriously. “It’s an honour to be trusted,” says Cheryl.

It’s not an accident that there are no windows in Esprit de la Femme. As much as they are in the lingerie business, they’re really in the relationship business. As someone born and raised in Nelson, Cheryl knows the importance of creating a comfortable environment and she has customers ranging in age all the way into their 90s because of that. For the men, you’ll be glad to know you won’t be overlooked. As a man, go into the wrong lingerie store and you could be made to feel like a skunk at a garden party. Not at Esprit De La Femme, not only do they have a funky sitting area but they also carry men’s underwear lines including the very popular Canadian made Saxx brand from Vancouver and the newly added Calvin Klein line. Cheryl and her staff are so eager to turn what is some times a delicate or even intimidating shopping experience into a moment of personal beauty that Esprit de la Femme will even open their doors to you after hours. If you and your girlfriends want a different kind of stagette, they can do that. Need a cup-sized bathing suit? Get it fitted by a pro…and by a friend at Esprit De La Femme.

After several years working as a massage therapist renting a small treatment room
within a physio clinic I felt restless and I had a vision building in my head. To be able to offer the best possible outcome for a patient, I surmised that having access to different therapies under the same roof would not only be convenient and powerful for the patient, but interesting and satisfying for the practitioner. In 2005 I took a risk, signed a lease for my own clinic and began building my vision. Today, the clinic offers massage therapy, lymphedema therapy and garment fitting, physiotherapy, IMS, custom orthotics, acupuncture and Chinese medicine, and yoga therapy. We are a cohesive, supportive team of professionals with your health and wellness as our top priority. New to the clinic is wellness coaching. I am continuing to build on my vision and noticed a gap in the health world in terms of support around stress management and burnout. I went back to school in 2012 and completed a Master’s Certificate in Executive Coaching at Royal Roads University. As a wellness coach I work with people to help them uncover what may be contributing to their stress, fatigue and/or health issues. I assist them in developing their own best strategies to build resilience and sustain a healthy, satisfying life.
What sets us apart? We have a team of health care providers under the same roof that work together to optimize your treatment and recovery.
Our Team: Kathy Streadwick, RMT, CEC, Heather Tobin, RMT, Lymphedema Therapist, Ebony Crocker, RMT, Dan Last, RMT, Sandi Jewell, Physiotherapist, Custom Orthoticist, Gabrielle Campbell, Physiotherapist, IMS practitioner, Daniel Hengsbach, Acupuncturist and herbalist, Eliza Gooderham, Yoga Therapist

f you bump into Kootenay Co-op manager Deirdrie Lang on the streets of Nelson and you find she doesn’t have a lot of time to chat, here’s why: She’s working right now as a kind-of real estate developer/construction manager while she runs the day-to-day operations of a very busy grocery store.
295 Baker St Nelson, BC (250) 354-4077 www.kootenay.coop
Deirdrie is one of those local-girl-makes-good stories. In 1987 she walked in off the street and asked for a job as a cashier. She was hired on the spot. She was one of two staff members, working for a single manager. That was 26 years ago, now she runs the joint. And she has more than 2 staff members; now the Kootenay Co-op employs 78 people. By the summer of 2015 the number of people working at the store could grow again. That’s when the packed-to-the rafters Co-op moves down the street to now-vacant Extra Foods building. Overseeing that move has become a part of Deirdrie’s job although she has a lot of very talented help, including project manager Russell Precious. There is a team of 20 people devoted to developing the new store and making the transition as smooth as it can be. Like Deirdrie, however, the team is working on more than one project. The Co-op will be much larger, of course, with a significant increase in size particularly in the meat and seafood departments, and deli and food services. There is also other retail space available in the new building as well as the much-anticipated Nelson Commons residential project. BC Wine Guys have already snapped up one of the retail spots with only two spaces remaining but, in housing starved Nelson, it’s the Nelson Commons one to- three bedroom units that are creating perhaps the greatest buzz. To accommodate the curiousity of community members and satisfy the demand for information, Deirdrie and her team are opening the Nelson Commons showroom at 621 Vernon St on August 24th. Prospective buyers can drop in, gather information and get a look at what the new units will be like. Not to be overlooked in all this planning, promotion and construction is the operation of the actual store. The officially named Kootenay Country Store Cooperative is completely owned by the community. There is no head office or shareholders, but that’s not to say community members don’t hold their co-op to a high standard. They do and Deirdrie’s team of managers and dedicated staff are making sure the smoothly run operation is not impacted in any way by all the activity going on outside the current store. The Co-op is unwavering in its mission, “Our focus is to support our local food system,” says Deirdrie. Natural foods and local organic products are the foundation of the store’s business and the commitment to these valued areas will stay the same, there will just be more products available.

The same goes for Kootenay Co-op’s revered wellness department. With a staff of extremely knowledgeable people to consult, you can find help on supplements and body care products as well as advice on eating better. Add on a few extra features like a bigger deli that offers freshly made sandwiches and that’s about as close as you can get to a Kootenay shopper’s paradise. Through all of this growth and all of this excitement, the staff and management at the Co-op have also maintained their other great passion: community involvement. Look around Nelson, the Co-op’s support is everywhere and whether it’s offering in-store activities or reaching out to community members, that desire to give back will only grow as the Coop does. Who knows? It may not be long before the Co-op outgrows its next building

aunching a new venture can be as wild an adventure as rafting in Rotarua or summiting Mt. Fuji. Building a business that provides the engine that drives adventure tourism around the world has been a ride of ups, downs, lessons learned, and success.
Co-founder and Managing Partner Kelly Acheson launched Adventure Engine live-to-the-web in 2005. Initially designed to be a giant database of adventure travel product with real-time seat inventory (think Expedia for adventure travel), Adventure Engine realized what they were actually doing was building a robust reservation system. Seeing a vacant niche where most adventure travel operators were still handling their reservations systems manually, they shifted to a B2B business model, selling customized, automated, complete reservation systems direct to adventure travel suppliers. “In order to survive, you have to continually review your strategies, be responsive and reactive,” explained Acheson. “Shifting our model really changed everything for us.” Like launching any new disruptive product into the market place, it
wasn’t all smooth sailing for Adventure Engine. “We were in “The Cloud,” before people were even calling it “The Cloud”, recalled Acheson. “Even the early adopters in the adventure industry were skeptical of us.“ Perseverance and hard work resulted in early wins, such as contracts with WestJet Vacations and Lonely Planet, which then provided the momentum for growth. In 2013 they have hired two new staff, bringing Adventure Engine to a team of seven, and have signed on to the BC Venture Acceleration Program (www.kast.com/VAP) being offered by the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology. VAP is designed to accelerate the growth of small businesses in the region. “VAP has asked the tough questions. It is challenging, but we’re doing it and it is so great,” explained Acheson. With high growth expectations, new staff, the KAST VAP program and an industry-leading product, the future looks bright for Adventure Engine.

ootenai Pilates is the only Pilates studio serving the West Kootenays. It is a Fitness and Wellness Studio offering Pilates, Massage Therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Midwifery Services. The studio offers a warm, welcoming, professional atmosphere and employs talented staff that strive to offer a diversity of classes to meet the needs of their clients.
Kirsty Holt, owner, instructing a client
Kirsty Holt, owner, bought the studio last October. “After managing and teaching at the studio for two years it felt like a natural progression to take on the business” says Kirsty. With a new 3 month old baby and a 3 year old daughter, last fall was a challenging time. “I feel so lucky to be surrounded by such a talented and experienced staff. This past year has been a juggling act but very rewarding. We’ve made some changes at the studio and it feels like we’re moving in an exciting direction!” Kootenai Pilates offers both matwork and Reformer classes based on the movement method created by Joseph Pilates. The “method” focuses on building core strength and postural alignment. With a background in Kinesiology and registered massage therapy, Pilates seemed like a natural fit for Kirsty. “I really immersed myself in Pilates after the birth of my first daughter. It was a wonderful way to regain my core and relieve postural tension after pregnancy.” After purchasing the business last fall Kirsty is pleased to have Chinese medicine and midwifery services offered at the studio. “I hope the studio continues to grow as new clients come to experience this profound movement therapy. The depth of the work is amazing and we hope to offer new programming choices in the future so our clients may grow with us!”

She has a 4-year degree in interior design and spent 15 years in Vancouver working for the high end and well-known designer Robert Ledingham. As a designer, Lara offers an array of services that can make even the most complicated home project an exercise in simplicity.
Bringing creative, fresh design to the Kootenays
“I take a holistic approach to make sure it all pulls together. It’s so important to design in a way that’s appropriate for the client and the space. Our approach can be applied to anything from new homes to kitchen renovations or even custom cabinetry for home entertainment systems.” And if you’re wondering, yes, Lara and Marc are detail people. Would your home benefit from a custom designed entryway bench and storage area? They’ll even measure your shoes! “Innovative, Efficient and Attainable”, is the mantra for Ellenwood Homes. That can be applied to the basics like having Lara pick out plumbing fixtures or flooring or draw you a lighting plan. She can even provide you with custom ordered furniture. So save yourself the time and the headache(s), as soon as you’re thinking about a project, it’s time to call Ellenwood Homes.

ountain Baby was born in 1994 in a tiny little store on Ward Street. Back then, its Mama, Judy Banfield, called the store Comfort and Joy, The Baby Store. Although Judy had no retail experience at all, she knew she wanted to create a place that was completely family friendly and that offered parents quality products that were sustainably and ethically made, and that fostered the healthy development of babies and young children. With her Masters Degree in Early childhood Education, her many years of teaching both young children and at the College level, and her training as a Breastfeeding Counselor, Judy had the strong intuitive sense of what families need. Fast forward 19 years, and Mountain Baby has become a very loved part of our community. It’s spacious location at 636 Baker Street offers multiple play areas, a large welcoming nursing room, and even a genuine tiny toilet for those tiny tushes. Mountain Baby is known for its loving customer service, fabulous staff who are all appreciated for their understanding and knowledge of children and their development, and for its 100% welcoming attitude towards even the most energetic toddler. Parents know they can come in for help with breastfeeding and parenting anytime, because, besides her Master’s Degree, Judy is an Internationally Certified Lactation Consultant. She freely dispenses her wisdom and knowledge. Over the years, in response to the changing times and the growing awareness of the importance of outdoor experiences for young children, Mountain Baby’s product mix has evolved. In addition to quality educational toys, books, strollers, nursing bras, baby carriers and other baby and preschool basics, Mountain Baby now carries a unique collection of products for children birth to six, which encourage families to be active, outdoors, and together. They are recognized for having the best selection of outdoor gear for young children in the country. “Children thrive when they are outdoors and

We provide the gear to get even the littlest kids outdoors, such as tiny beginner skis, and snowshoes, serious winter wear, swim wear, wetsuits, life jackets (even for babies) quality shoes and boots, balance bikes, ergonomic backpacks, and the best children’s fishing rod in North America (really!) and so much more.” Ten years ago the store’s website www.mountainbaby.com was launched, and was one of the first children’s websites in Canada. A new updated version was recently launched. The Mountain Baby staff spends countless hours researching products to find the absolute best of everything for your children and family, choosing products that meet and exceed rigorous safety and health standards. They choose natural, organic, and fair trade items as much as possible. Because they take such time and care in choosing the products, customers know that they can trust what Mountain Baby offers. “We do the research for parents. We care deeply about what we sell in the store. We strive to offer products that are well made and durable, and that can be passed on from child to child to child. That is sustainability!” Although Mountain Baby carries many quality well known brands, it tries to buy local as much as possible, and makes a point of supporting small, family owned businesses. Mountain Baby was voted “The Most Family Friendly Business in the Kootenays” and two years ago received the first ever “Excellence in Retail Award” from the Chamber of Commerce. “Children and Babies are at the core of my being, and they have been since I was 19 years old”, says Judy. “All of us at Mountain Baby are passionately, and deeply committed to supporting children, parents and families. We feel honoured that so many families trust and rely on us for their children’s well being, and we sincerely thank the community for its continued love and support.”

est Shalimar Health Spa owner Galena Ardern Pal on her holistic health knowledge all you want, you won’t likely be able to stump her because health and wellness is a family tradition in her family. Galena became a part owner of Shalimar in 2005 and became the sole owner in 2008. She took the business over from…you guessed it, her family. Galena’s stepmother, Deborah Lawton inspired Galena’s love for holistic care from her early years onward. Galena’s father Barry Ardern brought his own influence; after ten seasons in the CFL and, three Grey Cups, Barry had his own health concerns that inspired him to heal, rejuvenate and cleanse his body after retirement. That’s when in 1999 Barry & Deborah founded Shalimar Health Spa. Now with daughter Galena running the show, Shalimar is Nelson’s only Green Certified Spa and the only one to offer Eminence Organic skin care products. The Eminence line figures prominently in one of Shalimar’s most popular treatments, the award winning organic Eminence facials. That goes along with other spa favorites like manicures, pedicures, body wraps, scrubs and waxing. Then there are a few services you might not expect to find; The Moor mud hydro-therapy tub is a must do for skiers and any others with an active lifestyle. With over 100 nutrients the Moor mud detoxifies sore muscles and gets you ready for your next activity. Massages are also considered standard fare at spas and Shalimar Health Spa does offer hot stone, deep tissue and relaxation massages but the one many women just can’t seem to find, is found at Galena’s place: pre-natal massage. Shalimar has specially designed pillows that allow expecting mothers to lie on their stomach so they too can enjoy a soothing massage. Located by the waterfront in the Prestige Inn, Galena and her staff are putting her family heritage to work, contributing to the health of individuals and to the wellness of our community.

4Cats Nelson is a locally owned and operated business and a franchise. They reflect “the best of both worlds” by being able to contribute to our community and being able to offer a well managed, professional service. Because 4Cats Nelson is part of a larger company, they have the ability to offer an outstanding curriculum that is always changing, professional art supplies and fully trained instructors. 4Cats Nelson is a professional arts studio for artists ages 2 – 15. They offer Artist Focus, clay & sculpture, drawing/animation, stop motion and mixed media classes, workshops, camps, birthday and corporate parties, class field trips and more! “When I decided to move back to my hometown of Nelson, after 15 busy years of working as a movie and television wardrobe stylist in Vancouver, I knew that I needed to start something small, personal, and meaningful. Opening 4Cats, an arts studio for children, was a perfect fit: our community is full of loving families that appreciate, and understand the importance of living in an artistic environment. As I didn’t have any children at the time, opening 4Cats seemed like the ideal way to foster this growth in the community. As luck would have it, a year and a half later, I not only have a thriving and exciting art studio full of creative children, but also an 11-month-old daughter at home. Art not only teaches children to take risks and to learn from mistakes, but also to see that there can be more than one solution to the same problem and that not all of those mistakes are mistakes. Art teaches children to learn to explore playfully, without a preconceived plan, and to be surprised by the outcome. Our studio’s environment encourages this love of learning, creativity, and fun!” says Melanie Ward, owner of 4Cats Nelson.

r. Kathryn Bibby and her experienced team have been crafting beautiful, healthy smiles in Nelson for almost 17 years. As the only Certified Orthodontist in the region, we have the pleasure of treating many patients and their families who choose to travel a little further to seek out specialty care. We enjoy building special relationships with our practice families, and are even starting to treat the 2nd generation of Bibby smiles. Team Bibby is composed of 9 women, some of whom have been with Dr. Bibby since the practice opened in 1996. They provide a warm, friendly atmosphere that allows patients and families to feel at ease. From the first appointment with your Treatment Coordinator and Dr. Bibby to the exciting day the braces come off, you will always feel part of the process. All of our Clinical staff and Treatment Coordinators are Certified Orthodontic Assistants, so they bring a wealth of knowledge and are a great support system for patients and parents. With Orthodontic treatment, you are not simply choosing “braces”, “expanders”, or “aligners” but rather the professional who uses those tools to improve your bite and straighten your teeth. Dr. Bibby has the knowledge and experience to customize her treatment recommendations to fit the individual needs of each patient. Whether it is with braces or the more discreet “bracefree” approach of Invisalign, Dr. Bibby can help you achieve your smile goals, often while improving your confidence and dental health. The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be seen by an Orthodontist by age 7 years, as many problems are less complex when they are identified and treated early. Even if no treatment is recommended, Dr. Bibby will monitor facial growth and tooth eruption to determine the most appropriate timing for treatment (if indicated at all). Dr. Bibby has a reputation for providing quality care, combining the art and science of Orthodontics. She has a Dental degree from New Zealand and has been an Orthodontic Specialist since 1993, when she completed her additional 3-year Orthodontic training from the University of Toronto to graduate with a Master of Science and Diploma in Orthodontics. Dr. Bibby spent a few years in Yellowknife, and travelled extensively to provide Orthodontic care to underserviced regions in the far North. When an opportunity arose, the lure of the Kootenay region was too much to resist, and Dr. Bibby proudly opened her Orthodontic office in Nelson in 1996. She has since expanded, renovated, and gone digital with x-rays and charting, while staying in the same location. Dr. Bibby loves living in the West Kootenay and she, her husband Garry and two young sons, actively participate in the outdoor lifestyle it offers. She also believes in giving back to the community and supports many clubs and charities including Jumpstart, Lions Club, Friends of the Family, Steps Dance Centre, Glacier Gymnastics, Nelson Youth Soccer, and the West Kootenay Science Fair.

t’s been a busy summer at Cotton Creek Clothing –inside and outside the store. After 27 years of selling natural fibre women’s clothing, owner Noreen Lynas and her staff packed up and moved down the street to larger digs at 488 Baker St. The move included more than just a change of location. Cotton Creek Clothing also changed its logo and its name from Cottons to clear up any confusion shoppers might have about what they sell: women’s clothing, accessories, purses, jewelry but NOT stuff like cotton sheets. Now for anyone shopping for clothing that ranges from every day work wear to business casual to getting dressed up for a night out can find it in a larger, more inviting space that’s perfect for browsing and relaxing. And it’s about to grow a little bit more. Stay tuned next month for the opening of Cotton Creek Clearance Alley, a very funky new addition to Cotton Creek because
who doesn’t love a bargain? You can find great prices on a wide array of Canadian made products including the very popular purse line from Echoes in the Attic in Toronto. Everyone has heard of recycling but up-cycling is the newest trend; that involves taking a recycled item and improving it. That’s how Echoes in the Attic takes upholstery samples and turns them into very hip purses. And you can find them alongside the jewelry and other accessories at Cotton Creek Clothing. If you struggle to decide what goes with what, let the experienced staff help you, they excel at putting outfits together. Feel free to bring a piece from home and they’ll build an outfit around it. So drop by the newly named, newly located Cotton Creek Clothing or find us on the web and join our Facebook page.

n 1994 prior to relocating to Calgary from Toronto Val Semeniuk came to Nelson on vacation where she came across the infamous “Nelson” poem duplicated below:

To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury, and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy and respectable and wealthy but not rich, to study hard ,think quietly, talk gently and frankly to listen to the stars and birds to babes and sages; to bear all cheerfully do all bravely, await occasions, hurry never. In a word to let the spiritual and unconscious grow up through the common. This is to live in Nelson. - Anoymous For two years after that visit the anonymous poem hung in her home in Calgary until she could not resist a move to Nelson any longer. After 23 years in banking, including management positions in Edmonton, Calgary and Toronto, Val Semeniuk took the plunge to fulfill her long term dream of living in the mountains and becoming an independent business woman. In 1997 she opened Kootenai Moon Wicker & Rattan on Front Street where Kootenay Fire & Safety currently is. Kootenai Moon grew rapidly and needed to relocate to larger premises, several times. “It’s an ongoing process identifying what our community desires in home furnishings and how I can serve it best,” Semeniuk said. “I do it by listening to my staff and customers, conducting research, attending trade shows and being totally open to new ideas about doing business.” By continually changing the product mix, Kootenai Moon has become a very current home decor retailer and has taken home styling to the next level with the help of Laurel T. Colins. Laurel is the in-house Decorator and offers home consultations, including paint colour selections and Feng Shui. Laurel also manages the Home Staging & Decorating program for Real Estate Developers as well as residential Real Estate. We make homes sell! If you need help with any form of decorating in your home, Kootenai Moon Home is the place to start. Every staff member contributes greatly to the success of the business by injecting their own personality, so you are sure to get remarkable customer service on every visit. Going beyond the norm Kootenai Moon works co-operatively with referrals to independent Designers, Painters, Custom furniture manufacturers and independent Decorating Consultants. We also carry locally made products; Kootenay Forge, Honey Candles and A. Bryant Designs. With the evolvement of Kootenai Moon, Val and her staff have created a new name for the business that reflects the many layers that is now “Kootenai Moon Home” – Sleep Live Design. Val says “We love what we do and invite everyone to experience our new home at 115 Hall Street, next to Sears.” Sleep Live Design.
