RIDE THE FREE SHUTTLE TO THE FAIR

• All three days 10 a.m. until 1/2 hour after the beer garden at the rodeo closes: The Barriere shuttle will stop at the Esso Station, Sam's Pizza & Ribs, Barriere Seniors Hall, Barriere Ball Park, Barriere Employment Center. A pick-up will take place at the Louis Creek Antique Store at 11 a.m. and a drop off at 5 p.m. The shuttle starts at Chu Chua at 9:15 a.m. and returns to Chu Chua the last run of the day. All times are approximate depending on traffic etc.. Shuttle will run approximately every 30 minutes . Times will be posted at pickup sites and at fairground main entry gate.

There will be no shuttle this year from Clearwater or Little Fort.

Impressive words written

by E.M. Tiffany for the opening paragraph of the FFA Creed, and adopted by the National FFA Convention in 1930. Words that ring especially true in today's world as people are once again embracing the importance of agriculture, food safety, and food sustainability.

In this modern and technological era, it is easy to blissfully go on our merry way, finding all we need to clothe and feed our families at stores, shops, and department chain giants. But unless you live on a farm, how many of us really know where all of those items we wear, utilize, or put on the table actually come from? How are they made, how are they grown?

Part of the mission statement for the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association is, "To encourage, develop and promote the advancement of agriculture...".

In a nutshell that means our annual Fall Fair is about education – teaching the visiting public the value of agriculture; providing a venue where visitors can meet the families who grow the food, raise the stock, and help us to raise healthy and happy children.

To achieve this goal we annually put together a unique class on agriculture that fills three whole days with first class fun for the whole family – from the smallest to the oldest. In fact, you'll be having such a great time enjoying entertainment, music, magic, laughter and thrills, that the learning part will just sneak up on you – and the great memories will last a lifetime!

We're very proud of our old time country fair, and we are especially proud of our membership, volunteers, exhibitors, and performers who bring what agriculture is really about to our fairgoers.

We are also very proud of our 4-H youngsters who keep agriculture alive and well as they carry it with them into their futures. We need to say a big thank you to them, and to the people who still work the earth, raise the stock, and feed the world. Without you, we'd all be lost.

Come on down to our fair, and join us in celebrating 100 years of 4-H in Canada!

Mayor Bill Humphreys Cathy McLeod, MP Once again, welcome to you all!

The 2013 edition of the Fair celebrates the 100th Anniversary of 4-H in Canada and what a show it will be! For 64 years the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo has consistently provided all those that attend with a first class exhibition of the hard work and dedication of all those involved in agriMayor Bill Humphreys culture. 4-H has always been a big part of these efforts. This year the 4-H clubs will be making an even greater contribution with their showcasing of 100 Years of 4-H in Canada.

The North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association works hard to improve not only the already outstanding facilities, but also to expand and improve the program for the Fair and Rodeo. The exhibitions are lovingly prepared, the livestock is groomed to the best possible state, and the food gets tastier. Its old time fun in a state of the art facility made possible by the hard work and dedication of all those involved.

On behalf of the District of Barriere Council I congratulate the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association and 4-H Canada on your continued successes and accomplishments.

There will be much to take in this year as it looks like a packed agenda, but I personally look forward to the excitement of the rodeo and touring the many agricultural exhibits.

Don't miss Sunday night's Cowboy Concert You'll find a great line-up of entertainers playing at the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Cowboy Concert on Sunday, Sept. 1, 7:30 p.m., in the Fall Fair Hall. Tickets can be purchased at the fall fair office, or at the door: $10 for adults, and $6 for seniors.

• Butch Falk is a featured performer at many cowboy gatherings and festivals throughout Canada and the U.S. He possesses a unique ability to bring the most descriptive cowboy lyrics to life and transports the listener to another place and time.

• The Gordie West Band plays at many cowboy festivals in B.C. and Alberta. Gordie West and fiddle player Harley Jansen are a couple of guys with a thirst for the folklore of the west, and a yen to play good old cowboy music. Together they make the music come alive with song and good humour.

• Hugh McLennan, voice of the Spirit of the West, is a working rancher, who's knowledge of the cattle industry and his skill with horses have added to his understanding of life and it's challenges. Hugh has an amazing collection of songs, poems and stories, that never fail to entertain.

• Rob Dinwoodie's style is found somewhere in the realm of roots, country, western swing, and folk. He's true to the art of ballads in telling a story of the west. He and his guitar can engage any audience and make them want to go out and become the cowboy he sings about.

Remembering Dick Ross The North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association will be presenting a dedication to the memory of arena manager Dick Ross in the rodeo arena on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 1 p.m.

When long time Barriere resident, Dick Ross, passed away on February 18 of this year, many were saddened at the news. A champion for the community, Ross contributed as a volunteer throughout his life to making the community all that it could be.

Dick served in the Armed Forces, and held an original membership in the Royal Canadian Legion since 1954.

He was a past-president of the Barriere Lions Club, and a Charter Member.

He drove ambulance, school bus, fought fires, and was a Charter Member of the Chu Chua Volunteer Fire Department.

He loved to coach kids, and was a driving force behind starting the construction of the original Barriere Ball Park. He also was instrumental in organizing the Barriere Maroons Softball Team in 1960 - and served as a coach for that organization.

Dick found the time to work for the railway, run a cattle ranch, work for a mining company, and any number of other jobs or volunteer positions that might have come his way over the years.

Way back in 1973 Dick Ross, and a small group of enthusiastic volunteers, put together the first rodeo ever to be held during the North Thompson Fall Fair – starting another page in the history book of the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association.

In the 40 years since that time, Dick made sure the rodeo not only continued - but improved - and with his wife Carmen at his side - and the supportive help of family and volunteers - this annual BCRA rodeo is now one of the best rodeos to be found in British Columbia - something he was extremely proud of - and rightly so.

The Fall Fair and Rodeo were a passion for Dick.

When he finally retired from his day job for the last time, Dick said, "I'm going to do a little roping - rework the footing in the rodeo arena to get it into better shape and help to keep the Fall Fair and Rodeo successful.

And that is exactly what he did!

NTFFRA president Jill Hayward says, "I had the pleasure of making Dick's acquaintance some 20 years ago when I joined the Association, or perhaps I should say - became a part of the Fall Fair family.

"We served together on the executive for many years – served together on the Agriplex Committee – and very often found ourselves side-by-side pounding nails, picking rocks, or any number of other endless jobs that there are to do around this facility.

"Dick was always there to volunteer - to help - to lend a hand. He was a master at sourcing tools and material when they were needed, not to mention how Dick could produce a volunteer or two any time a project was in need

of helping hands to be completed."

Every year during the official opening of the fall fair, while the big parade made its way out of the rodeo arena, you could always spot Dick in the center of the arena while the officials and politicians had their say - he'd be picking up rocks out of the footing and pitching them out of his rodeo arena.

He took great pride in his arena, he poured his heart his sweat - and a huge portion of his life into it.

In memory of Dick's dedication to the association and his beloved rodeo arena, the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association voted unanimously this spring to name the arena in his honour – the Dick Ross Memorial Arena.

Thanks Dick - know that the friends you leave behind feel privileged to have known you - we'll think of you often, and we know you will continue to ride at our side.

May all your horses be fast - your ropes fly true - and may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.

An official dedication ceremony will take place during this year's Fall Fair, on Saturday, August 31, at 1 p.m., in the rodeo arena.

4-H Over A Century

This article was written and presented by Yellowhead 4H Club member, Madison Kerslake, as part of her winning 2013 Heritage Fair project.

My name is Madison Kerslake and this is my project on 4-H and how it has changed over a century. As of this year, 4-H Canada is celebrating 100 years of learning to do by doing.

I wanted to do this Heritage Fair project because I am a 4-H member myself, and I wanted to inspire others to join 4-H. 4-H has changed a lot over a century. When I interviewed my friend's grandparents, Glen and Jean Cochran, as well as Dolly Parton, I learned that 4-H had mostly farm kids involved, and it was more about farm skills. Members would learn how to grow potatoes or milk a cow.

Now kids like me, who live in a subdivision, can easily join 4-H. 4-H now focuses a lot on leadership as well as raising animals. The animals can be anything from a steer to a rabbit, or even a dog. But kids who don't want to raise animals have options to do photography, sewing or even make chocolate.

The idea of 'learn to do by doing', which is the 4-H motto, has continued to shape 4-H to this present day. Kids are constantly learning new skills, like learning how to judge, showing, and raising animals, taking stunning pictures, and learning how to public speak – which has helped me tremendously. Most importantly, 4-H teaches kids how to respect others and be good citizens.

Lucky for me, 4-H has made it easier for more urban kids to join. Without 4-H, I would have still been afraid of sheep and public speaking. In conclusion, the 4-H movement is the roots of the agricultural development in our country.

The Past: Starting in 1913 4-H was born, but it wasn't actually called 4-H back then, it was called boys and girls clubs. Boys and Girls Clubs focused mostly on the best calf or crop. They had lots of contests, like potato growing contests. Members got their steers in the fall when they were 250 lbs, and sold them when they were about 900 lbs, which would be a perfect weight. Mostly, farm kids were in 4-H/Boys and Girls Clubs, because it was a lot harder for those who didn't live on a farm. People could go as far as they could walk, or as far as a horse could take you. Members back then would not have had some of the projects we do today, like photography. Their main projects were Animals and Gardening.

The Present: There has been many changes in 100 years of 4-H. In this present day, 4-H very much focuses on animals, citizenship and leadership. In 4-H we have a general meeting every month, run by our club executive. We have a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, reporter, and safety officers. We talk about events coming up, plan for the future, and read the 4-H pledge at the beginning of the meeting. We have two main 4-H events, Fall Fair and Provincial Winter Fair, where we show our animals and judge animals, compete in events such as Twemlow to win a lamb, spend time with our friends and our animals. We also have days where we can learn to judge, like hands on judging, Field Day, and Rally, where we compete in judging. There

are now 26,000 4-H members in Canada, and clubs in almost every province.

4-H Timeline: 1913 - Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada was born in Roland, Manitoba 1913 - Quebec launches a Boys and Girls Club 1914 - British Columbia starts a Boys and Girls Club 1915 - Ontario starts a Boys and Girls Club 1916 - New Brunswick launches a Boys and Girls Club 1917 - Albert launches a Boys and Girls Club 1917 - Saskatchewan starts a Boys and Girls Club 1918 - PEI launches a Boys and Girls Club 1922 - Nova Scotia starts a Boys and Girls Club 1924 - the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto was held 1930 - Boys and Girls Club motto came; the motto was "to instruct oneself is to enrich ones life" 1931 - the Canadian council for Boys and Girls Clubs was born 1933 - the council was granted 1937 - Newfoundland launches a Boys and Girls Club.

1952 - Boys and Girls Clubs became 4-H Canada 1952 - The 4-H Canada logo was made 1952 - 4-H Canada adopted the 4-H pledge: "I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, my health to better living, for my club, my community, and my country."

Fun at the Fair If you like rodeo you'll know what bull riding is.

Ever wondered if you could stay on the back of a bull for eight seconds? Now's your chance to try – find Diablo, the mechanical bull in front of the beer garden.

Diablo can be a gentleman with the youngsters, but give him a chance and he'll really show his stuff for the cowboys. Tickets can be purchased at the Information Booth or the Amusement Ticket Booth close to the Climbing Wall.

Youngsters will find oodles of fun on the super slide, the bouncy castle, or other amusements before they head over to the Interior Savings Children's Educational Activity Tent – a place where they can have piles of fun learning about agriculture. You'll find the Children's Educational Activity Tent across from the Information Booth, and in the vicinity of the Outdoor Entertainment Stage.

While the kids play, mom and dad can sit back in the shade and enjoy the great lineup of entertainment on the outdoor stage. You'll find non stop entertainment with something for everyone, from adults to kids.

Check out the vendors and antique cars in the North Thompson Agriplex conference hall, and while your there take a look at the 4-H beef and sheep competitions in the Agriplex arena.

NTFFRA Ambassador Program 2013 Another year of the North Thompson Fall Fair & Rodeo Ambassador Program (previously called the Pageant) will soon be at another turning point as our reigning 2012/2013 Royalty hand down their crowns to the 2013/2014 winners.

This year's Ambassador Committee was kept busy, both with attending functions with the current Royalty, and working with our six new candidates for 2013. Since early spring the candidates have been attending classes in dancing, speech, time management, agricultural, Fall Fair and area history, horsemanship skills, and so much more.

The candidates and reigning Royalty have also attended numerous community functions, and travelled to several Pageants or Coronations held in other communities.

As this program goes to press, the candidates are now preparing for their final appearance where we will be crowning the next North Thompson Fall Fair & Rodeo Royalty.

The Coronation is set for Friday, Aug. 23, at the District of Barriere Municipal Hall (The Ridge) at 7 p.m.

The Ambassador committee would like to thank everyone that has helped in this program for both past and current years. Without these dedicated volunteer’s and supporters the program would not be the grand success that it continues to be. Thank you so much.

Exciting competitions all 3 days There is plenty of fast moving action and competitions all three days of this year's fair. The BCRA Rodeo performances start each day at 1:30 p.m., with the pony chuckwagons burning up the track during intermission, and again after the rodeo. Also, during intermission in the rodeo arena see the amazing trick riding skills of Hearts of the West.

The rodeo arena will also host the Heavy Horse Pull in the Rodeo arena at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, and approximately 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. You'll find the Heavy Horse Log Skid competitions on Sunday, at 11:30 a.m. in the Light Horse Arena; and the Multiple Hitch on Monday at 10:15 a.m. in the Rodeo Arena. Heavy Horses will also compete in driving classes and in hand, with times and dates listed in the Schedule of Events at the front of this program.

Fall Fair has supported 4-H since 1949 Way back in 1949 the North Thompson Fall Fair was founded to give 4H youth an opportunity to show their projects in competition.

Today the Association still stands by that commitment and annually offers 4-H competitions all three days of the Labour Day Weekend Fair. The Association also makes it's facility available to the local Yellowhead 4-H Club for Weigh Days, Field Days, and other 4-H related events.

4-H competitions in the Agriplex This year you will find many of the 4-H competitions at the Fall Fair are being held inside the North Thompson Agriplex.

You'll also be able to see the youngsters preparing their project beef and sheep for the show ring; bathing, clipping, trimming and final preparations before competition.

The sheep and beef are also stabled inside the Agriplex.

Take a walk around. You'll find each 4-H Club with its own section of stabling, with information and awards readily displayed.

The clubs are all judged on how clean they keep their stable area, and you'll find the kids busy making it so.

Don't be shy about asking the 4-H members about their project animal, or about the 4-H program, and the events each club holds annually.

This year, 4-H is celebrating their 100th anniversary from coastto-coast, with local, provincial and national events. In Barriere, we are celebrating by having the theme of the 64th annual North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo event as "100 years of 4-H".

One of Canada's longest running and most respected youth organizations, 4-H allows Canadian youth to explore, learn and discover, while expanding their horizons. Across Canada, more than 8,000 trained volunteer leaders help more thank 26,000 youth members develop self-confidence and learn a wide variety of skills through hands-on project work.

For those who haven't been a part of 4-H, here is a little about the program. The four "H"'s stand for Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. Members pledge all four to their club, their community and Canada as a whole. The pledge: My HEAD to clearer thinking, My HEART to greater loyalty, My HANDS to larger service, My HEALTH to better living, For my Club, my Community and my Country.

All youth, from ages eight to 21, can join 4-H. The goal of the program is to prepare the youth for their future as adult citizens. The skills they learn are the skills needed to contribute to

making this a better world, and many who pass through the program go on to become leaders in their communities. A focal point in many of the projects is providing an opportunity for the youth to learn how to become productive, self-assured adults. The objectives are knowledge, leadership, citizenship, and personal development.

There are a huge number of projects to choose from at every level. Some of the B.C. provincial projects include: adopt-a-grandparent, crafts, photography, dairy, goats, sheep, poultry, and small engines.

Locally, 4-H gives back to the community and creates community leaders. Provincially, there are opportunities to attend conferences and camps, and the chance of winning scholarships. Nationally, members have the chance to see different parts of Canada and the world, more scholarships, and national conferences.

While 2013 marked 100 years of 4-H in Canada, in 2014, B.C. 4-H will be celebrating 100 years of 4-H in the province.

Celebrate rodeo at this year's Fair

Rodeo, or stampedes, began as friendly competitions between cowboys when ranchers and ranch hands gathered for picnics and race meets. The competitions were almost all based on the day to day work of the cowboy, which involved roping, riding wild horses, handling rough stock, and understanding cattle and horses.

The British Columbia Rodeo Association (BCRA) was formed in 1988 when three associations within the province, the Interior Rodeo Association, Yellowhead Cowboys Association and the Vancouver Island Rodeo Association joined forces to become the primary governing body of rodeo in British Columbia.

The North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo hosts three days of BCRA rodeo every year during our annual fall event.

With non-stop action all three days the wildest and most physically demanding of the the three rough stock events in rodeo. The rider is judged on his spurring technique, from the point of the horse's shoulder back to the rigging - the degree his toes are turned out during the ride, and his ability to lay back onto his horse. The wilder, the better. A cowboy will be disqualified for not staying on for the full eight seconds, missing his horse out (not having both feet over the point of the shoulder when the horse's front feet hit the ground on the first jump out of the chute), or double grabbing (taking hold of the rigging with both hands). The ride is scored by two judges, each giving the horse and the cowboy a score out of 25 points, for a total score of 100.

• Saddle bronc riding is the 'classic' event of rodeo, evolved from cowboys breaking colts on ranches. The most technical event in rodeo, it requires timing and fluid control. The rider must mark his horse out (both feet over the point of the shoulder when the horse's front feet hit the ground on the first jump out of the chute). A halter, thick rein, and an association saddle (built to the guidelines of the governing association) are the main equipment. A rider must spur from the point of the shoulder to the back of the saddle.

The smoother and more consistent the spurring, the higher the score. Disqualification occurs if the rider touches his horse or equipment with his free hand, doesn't mark his horse out, or is bucked off before the eight seconds elapse. The ride is scored out of 100 points by two judges, each giving the cowboy and horse a score out of 25 points apiece.

• Bull riding is considered to be the most dangerous and most popular rodeo event among spectators. The bulls average 1,500 to 1,800 pounds, and the cowboys average 130 to 175 pounds - not quite even odds. A ride lasts eight seconds and is scored out of 100 points by two judges. Each judge scores the bull and the cowboy out of 25 points each. Control on the cowboy's part is the main ingredient to last the full eight seconds, but spurring will get a higher score. A rider rides one-handed with a braided rope around the bull's girth, and with his free hand in the air. Disqualification will result if the cowboy touches the bull with his free hand or doesn't stay on the entire eight seconds.

NORTH THOMPSON FALL FAIR & RODEO ~ PROGRAM Lower North Thompson Fall Fair Association's first 1950 Board of Directors President - Ernie Schmidt, Barriere Manager - Len Johnson, Heffley Creek Secretary /Treasurer Geordie Bradford (Salle), Chinook Cove The Association had a total of 22 members from Little Fort, Barriere, Darfield, Heffley Creek, Chinook Cove, Louis Creek, and Vinsulla.

Since then the association has continued to grow, and is now called the NORTH THOMPSON FALL FAIR & RODEO ASSOCIATION. In 2007 the 58th Annual North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo was awarded the title of Provincial Fair of the year in its category from the government of British Columbia.
