Two fatalities in separate incidents in the West Kootenays staff West Kootenay Advertiser
WINLAW: On Wednesday, Aug. 14. 2013 at 11:08 p.m. Slocan RCMP and the West Kootenay Traffic Services attended the 5900 block of Highway 6, Winlaw on a pedestrian fatality. Investigation
has revealed that a loaded Super B semi trailer was south bound on Highway 6 and struck a 35-yearold female who was standing on the roadway. The area had no artificial light and the female was dressed in dark clothes. The name of the deceased will not be released until all next
of kin have been notified and at that time the B.C. Coroners Service may release the name. If anyone witnessed a female hitchhiking between Playmore Junction Highway 3 and 6 and Winlaw around the time of 10:30 - 11 p.m. please contact West Kootenay Traf-
fic Services in Nelson at 1010 Second Street or call 250-354-5146. The B.C. Coroners Service and West Kootenay Traffic Services are continuing to investigate. ----KASLO: At approximately 12:15 p.m. Monday, Au-
gust 19, the body of a 73-year-old male who was reported missing in Mirror Lake the previous day was located by the RCMP Dive Team. The male was in approximately 45 feet of water, close to where he was last seen. Witnesses had observed the male dive from a dock/dive platform
in the lake and swim for a short period of time before he was observed to be in distress. Two witnesses were unable to help the man before he had gone under the water and he failed to resurface. The recovery proved more difficult than expected as the
bottom of the lake is covered in a significant layer of mud, making visibility an issue. The RCMP is still attempting to locate next of kin and no name is being released. Foul play is not suspected and the case will be turned over to the B.C. Coroners Service.

A guide to understanding the Post-Retirement Benefit Plan Submitted
Nearly every working Canadian pays into the Canada Pension Plan (CPP), but not everyone understands how the actual benefits work as you transition your way into retirement. Things can get particularly complicated if you start collecting CPP but also continue to work — a choice that more and more Canadians seem to be making these days. Back in the day, the familiar “Freedom 55” retirement dream was on everybody’s wish list. Fastforward to today and it’s clear to see that with the high cost of living, longevity and not nearly enough retirement savings, more than seven in 10 Canadians plan to keep on working after reaching retirement age, according to Statistics Canada. Prior to 2012, workers had to stop working or significantly reduce their earnings for two consecutive months before being eligible to receive their CPP, before age 65. Then once they started receiving CPP (as early as age 60 in some cases), they could not make further CPP contributions even if they wanted to. Now, however, those rules don’t apply so it makes it easier for contributors to make a gradual transition to retirement whereby, you
can continue working and still collect the CPP benefit. There is a new lifetime benefit for individuals that work while receiving CPP called the PostRetirement Benefit (PRB). This benefit increases your retirement income and rises with the normal increases in the cost of living (even if you already draw the maximum pension from the CPP). If you start receiving CPP benefits while you are still working, you are now required to continue paying into the CPP program, however, your contributions would go into this new PRB plan instead. Your “normal CPP” will not increase – but, if you did make contributions towards the PRB then those benefits will be paid to you automatically the year following your contributions. Under the revamped 2012 rules however, anyone still working is expected to contribute to the CPP until age 65. After that, you can choose whether to participate or not up to age 70, providing you’re already collecting CPP. In fact, contributions are still mandatory until age 70, unless you opt out by filing form CPT30, Election to Stop Contributing to the Canada Pension Plan, or Revocation of a Prior Election with your
employer. But, for some, that might not be the right choice. The main considerations when deciding to contribute or opt out, depend on how much you’re earning, your age, and whether you’re an employee or are self-employed. The cost of contributing to the CPP is 4.95% of your earnings above the Year’s Basic Exemption ($3,500 for 2013) and up to the Year’s Maximum Pensionable Earnings ($51,100 for 2013). Starting at age 65, it would take close to eight years (until age 73) for your total PRB received, to equal the actual cost of those same voluntary contributions made into the CPP. But things aren’t so clear cut for those who work for themselves. As a self-employed person, the CPP contribution costs would be double - at 9.90% - as they would have to pay the 4.95% employee cost AND the 4.95% employer cost. The break-even age would actually be pushed out well into your 80s before you get back what you actually put in. This suggests that continuing CPP contributions past 65 might be a sound choice for workers who have employers still paying half the freight, but substantially less so for those self-employed workers who have to pay both ends.

Brooklyn, B.C. was no Brooklyn, N.Y. West Kootenay Advertiser
Twenty-fifth in an A-to-Z series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names The boomtown of Brooklyn, on Lower Arrow Lake, came to life in 1898 as the construction headquarters of the Columbia and Western Railway and died once the railway was completed. The earliest mention came in the Victoria Daily Colonist of June 23, 1898: “James Wilson, formerly street superintendent of Victoria, arrived today at Brooklyn, the newest city of the Kootenay country, which has within the past week sprung up …” A month later the Colonist added: “Some little distance this side of Robson the steamer runs alongside a camp with the pretentious sounding name of Brooklyn.” Townsite owner William Parker preempted the land a few years earlier and built a log cabin. According to Clara Graham in Kootenay Mosaic, he named it after his native Brooklyn, New York. (In turn, a natural arch in the area is sometimes called the Brooklyn Bridge.) The townsite consisted of Lake, First, Second, and Third
streets, plus Park, Brooklyn, Larson, Stewart, and Whitmore avenues. The Brooklyn post office opened October 1, 1898, closed November 20, 1899, reopened December 18, 1899 and closed for good on May 1, 1900. By 1911, J.E. Annable of Nelson acquired the vacant townsite and began subdividing it into orchard lands, anticipating the arrival of a dozen families from Alberta. He soon sold 517 acres to C.W. Stirling and Co. of Moose Jaw who hired every man available at nearby Deer Park to continue land clearing. The Brooklyn townsite today is just a field, accessible only by boat, 16 kilometres north of the Hugh Keenleyside dam. BROUSE This farming community south of Nakusp was named for Dr. Jacob Edwin Brouse (1868-1925), medical officer for the Nakusp and Slocan Railway. According to Kate Johnson in Pioneer Days of Nakusp and Arrow Lakes, “The nearest doctor was Dr. Brouse of New Denver, who would so often be called in time of sickness or accident and as the residents heard the train stop at a certain center, they
Smell ‘n’ tell

would invariably say ‘Here is Dr. Brouse.’ Through the efforts of Mr. Cameron, the K.P. members and Masonic members, the name Brouse was chosen instead of Box Lake.” (The school district, however, was called Box Lake from 190944 until it amalgamated with Nakusp.) In Port of Nakusp, Milt Parent clarifies that James Cameron and Jim Morrison chose the name. The Brouse post office opened January 1, 1910, closed May 31, 1917, reopened December 6, 1932 and closed for good May 30, 1964.

Family still searching for missing Australian man
www.nelsonchrysler.com service @nelsonchrysler.com 803 Baker Street, Nelson
The third anniversary of Australian Owen Rooney’s disappearance is today (Aug. 14) and while his family is still actively searching, it is trying to find a sense of normalcy. The family, including sisters Bree and Kelly Rooney, canvassed B.C. and Alberta after Owen’s disappearance but have since returned to Australia. “We have had some time to return our lives to looking normal again,” explained Kelly Rooney, who has begun teaching again. “We still live each day with Owen close to our hearts and do what we can to continue the search for him without allowing it to consume our entire lives. We all miss Owen dearly in our lives. I had my 30th birthday party with a big group of friends and family, we had lamb on the spit on a sunny winter afternoon. Owen would have loved it and he was very missed.” “We are continuing our search for Owen with the help of the social media via Facebook and our website (www.find-owen. com). We are living our life alongside this and working every day to be happy within our life. We have come to a place of trust that Owen will return to us if he can and we work to have all doors open for him to do that,” explained mother Sharron Rooney, who is working at her natural healing therapy business. Other sister Bree is at university, doing a double degree in fine arts and teaching while brother Sean and father Steve are back doing electrical work, according to Sharron and Kelly. While both Sharron and Kelly have

said contact with the RCMP has been reduced with their return to Australia, there has been increased media coverage in Australia as Missing Persons Week in the country was between July 28 and Aug. 3. “The idea is it’s not illegal to go missing. It is thrown around in such a thoughtless way. From our interactions with other families of missing persons I have never heard of or met a person who just decided to go missing,” Kelly explained. People do not go missing without reason. There is always something wrong and it is often related to a mental health issue be that depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, psychosis. These people are at risk and need to be helped. The issue of missing people needs to be treated more urgently. We have also found that we were faced with the response of limited resources. I feel that if the attitude towards missing people changes from the opinion that it is a person at risk rather than a person making an informed choice of stable mind, then there might be a greater need for additional funding, support and resources invested into these life-changing situations.” Kelly believes there wouldn’t have been
as much action on Owen’s case had they not stayed in Canada but Grand Forks RCMP’s Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison said the file is still open and there has been a lot of effort spent trying to locate the missing man. “We’ve not received any tips recently but we do follow up on every single one that does come in, no matter what the tip is, we follow it up to a logical conclusion,” Harrison told the Gazette. “We will be doing a media blitz through our RCMP website in regards to marking the anniversary of his disappearance. Grand Forks Search and Rescue (SAR) has indicated to us that when they do practices, they continue searching in areas that previously haven’t (been) searched – we do have an active map of all the areas that were searched.” SAR and volunteers have searched over 27 square kilometres on the ground, in sometimes rough terrain, according to Harrison. “We have recently had his DNA searched against all the American databases for unidentified human remains that have been found in the United States,” Harrison explained. “That has to be done on an annual basis – we have to actually request it, they don’t do it automatically.”

Search still active for Australian Continued from Pg. A6
Harrison said similar DNA searches have been done across Canada and the Coroner’s Service of B.C. also carries a full DNA profile of Rooney on its database. The case is still active and will remain so until Rooney is found or until the Australian will be anticipated to reach 100 years of age – he was 24 years of age in 2010. Rooney was last seen at Boundary Hospital in Grand Forks in 2010 – he had suffered a head injury two days earlier – and left behind
his cellphone and backpack. He stands 175 cm (5’9”) and weighs about 73 kg (161 pounds). At the time of his disappearance he had short brown hair and he has two tattoos, one of a circle with a Celtic star on his left shoulder blade and another of a triangle and a kangaroo on his right calf. Anyone who may have any information about this dissapearance is asked to call Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288 or visit the station in person at 1608 Central Ave. in Grand Forks.

Invasive mussels a mess Submitted
Boaters may unknowingly transport invasive mussels into our waters. Photo David Britton
Zebra mussels, an invasive aquatic species, have devastating impacts where they are introduced. They can ruin fishing and recreational opportunities, alter aquatic habitat for plants and animals, and block water intake structures for hydro power. Since the initial discovery of zebra mussels in the Great Lakes in the 1980’s, this species has now spread to more than 20 states and 2 provinces in eastern North America,

According to Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the threat of these mussels arriving and establishing in the Columbia Basin is high. “We are extremely concerned about zebra mussels arriving in our waters” says Sheila Street of FortisBC who sits as Chair on the Central Kootenay Invasive Plant Committee’s (CKIPC) Aquatic Invasive Species Working Group. “Not only can these mussel...

When he passed through the Kootenays in early July, a determined Vancouverite was in the process of making an 1,100-kilometre trek from Hope to Calgary to raise money for the Children’s Aid Society. A number of stories in the media highlighting disturbing situations involving children alarmed Bart Zych to the point of him embarking on his fundraising campaign, the iforCommunity Project. When the Times interviewed him in July, Zych was feeling the pain of crossing the various mountain ranges between the Coast and Trail and was still heading eastward, looking forward to the more level ground of Alberta. “There were two components that really stood out; the emotional and the physical,” said Zych from Vancouver. “My original route would have taken me through Banff but after the Kootenay Pass, which was 75 km and took me two days, my left knee that I had had operated on started giving me problems. I decided to go through Fernie instead and went through the Crowsnest Pass, taking a flatter route.” Although the path may have seemed less demanding in some ways, there were challenges in Alberta that Zych had not anticipated. “There was such a strong headwind it really slowed me down, and the distance between the towns in Alberta became an obstacle,” said Zych. “I was camping the whole way on the trip, sleeping in a tent and just using a little single burner to cook on. The 2013 fall concert tour is a series of firsts for La Cafamore. The classical music group has been touring the Kootenays since 2008, performing concerts mainly for the string quartet format, with occasional guests. In this next series of concerts they will present piano trio repertoire for the first time, touching down in Rossland on Oct. 2 at the Rossland Gallery. “We are without our cellist for this concert,” said Rosslander Carolyn Cameron, “He is busy with his new appointment as artistic director of the symphony of the Kootenays. In fact, we were almost without our violist too.” Alexis More, violist, has left her teaching position in the Kootenays to further her career in Victoria. “Luckily for us, she was able to fit these concerts into her busy schedule,” said Cameron. In light of these changes, the group was faced with finding repertoire for two vio-
lin and viola. While there are some excellent works for this combination, violinist Angela Snyder had concerns about the loss of the bass part. “To me it feels like there is something missing when the cello voice is not there,” she said. The group decided to explore piano trio repertoire, with Cameron switching roles of violinist to pianist. “I am very excited and somewhat nervous, because I haven’t done much chamber music as a pianist…I’m hoping that my violin experience translates across instruments.” Since most piano trio arrangements are for violin, viola and cello, violist More will take on the cello part with her viola. “Most cello parts transpose fairly easily to viola” she said, impishly adding, “the piano drowns me out anyway.” The group will play two of the most famous works of the piano trio repertoire, Haydn’s Gypsy piano trio and Beethoven’s Archduke piano trio. “I grant you that the
Haydn is the piano’s moment to shine,” said Cameron. “Haydn intended the piano to be the focal point, with the other instruments as supporting characters, so to speak. There are very few instances in this work where the viola part is not also played by the piano. My apologies to Alexis.” Both Snyder (violin) and More have their moments in the sun with the Beethoven Archduke trio. “In the hands of Beethoven, the piano trio is a more collaborative effort, giving each member an important and unique voice,” said Snyder. “Piano trios are my favourite instrument combination, and the Beethoven is unbeatable.” The group will be touring the communities of Silverton, Fernie, Invermere, Cranbrook, Crawford Bay, and Nelson with financial assistance the Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and from private donor Dr. R.J. Cameron who also happens to be married to Carolyn Cameron.

Over 170 arts, culture and heritage projects—including the Columbia Basin Culture Tour—have received a total of $706,000.00 in funding support for the 2013 –2014 season through the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance (CKCA), in partnership with Columbia Basin Trust (CBT). “The CKCA Steering Committee was pleased to be able to supply CBT funding to good projects all across the Basin. We hope cultural organizations will start thinking about activities that will be happening between June 2014 and May 2015 and planning their applica-
tions now for the next funding cycle.” said Jacquie Hamilton, Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance Chair. CKCA administers and manages arts, culture and heritage program funding on behalf of CBT. Funding applications were adjudicated in May by the CKCA Steering Committee, with input from community arts councils. Support will go toward a wide range of projects, including individual and group projects, master classes, major exhibitions and heritage capital projects. “Arts, culture and heritage are fundamental to who we are as Basin residents and integral to community well being in the Columbia Basin,” said Neil Muth, CBT President and CEO. “We fully
support CKCA in its efforts to build long-term sustainability for artists and to strengthen and support arts, culture and heritage organizations.” CKCA funding helps individuals and organizations realize heritage projects and projects in all arts disciplines, including visual art, theatre, music, dance, media, literature and inter-arts. For a list of funded projects, visit the CKCA website at www.basinculture. com or call 1-877-505-7355. CBT delivers social, economic and environmental benefits to residents of the Columbia Basin. funding from the Environment Canada Damages Fund, and partnerships with the Province of BC, Slocan Lake Stewardship Society, FortisBC and Teck Metals Ltd., this project monitored for zebra larvae at nine locations including sites in the Arrow Lakes, Kootenay Lake, Slocan Lake, Pend D’Oreille River and Columbia River (near Trail). “This was a great project to train local volunteers how to detect for mussels

Community/Business Summer Cadet camp memorable, rewarding
STAFF WRITER Nelson Star
Nelson’s Valraea Pederson has had a summer to remember. The 15-year-old is an air cadet with 561 Squadron in Nelson with over two years of experience playing percussion tucked away under her belt. Over the past few weeks, she has gained valuable experience in Victoria. “Every summer is different, there are new people and new experiences,” said Pederson of her summers away with the provincial cadet program. “I learn music and grow as a person.” Pederson and another 200 air cadets graduated this past weekend from a variety of three and sixweek courses in areas such as aviation tech-
nology and aerospace; sports and fitness; and survival. With The Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia as reviewing officer, the graduates treated guests and spectators with calisthenics, music, and drill routines that they had choreographed themselves. “No matter which direction you decide to travel, you will all be better equipped for the future as a result of the experiences here at Albert Head Cadet Camp,” said Guichon during her address to the assembled cadets on parade. “I see that all those of you who go through the cadet experience learn so much about selfdiscipline, team work, sportsmanship, citizenship and of course, it appears to me, that
there is a great deal of fun to be had along the way.” There are almost 30 air cadets with 561 Squadron in Nelson. Ten of its cadets have completed a variety of courses at Albert Head, a provincial air cadet summer camp. The newest of B.C.’s four cadet summer training centres, Albert Head Air Cadet Summer Training Centre was established in 1995. Each year, approximately 930 cadets will attend the centre between July and August, while a staff of approximately 150 will provide supervision and instruction. As a provincial training facility, air cadets selected for the courses and staff come from the 58 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadrons located

Wszelaki takes reins of Columbia Power Corp. STAFF WRITER West Kootenay Advertiser
Columbia Power Corporation (Columbia Power) has announced the appointment of Frank Wszelaki as acting president and chief executive officer, effective August 1, 2013. “We are pleased with the wealth of experience Frank brings to Columbia Power,” said Lee Doney, chair of Columbia Power’s Board of Directors in a press release. “He is well positioned to continue building on the work that has been accomplished to date and move the organization to its future phase.” In his most recent role as Columbia Power’s chief operating officer, Wszelaki had full operational leadership responsibility for the company, directing the overall day-to-day
operations of the organization consistent with its vision, values, corporate objectives and strategic plan. Bree Seabrook, communications manager, said outgoing CEO Jane Bird has accepted a position overseas. “She was offered a position with the high commission in London [England],” said Seabrook. “I think it’s a two-year term overseas and so it’s a great opportunity for her.”
Wszelaki’s professional background spans close to 30 years in the electric utility industry. His utility journey has taken him through all aspects of power generation and includes; engineering, plant systems, project management, outage management, maintenance, plant management and executive leadership. During his time at Columbia Power, he has built positive relationships
with staff and stakeholders. As president and chief executive officer, Wszelaki will continue to ensure Columbia Power’s existing hydropower facilities operate well, the Waneta Expansion Project is completed on- schedule and onbudget with a positive safety and environmental record, and the company investigates a path to future hydro projects in the region.
“Sarah is familiar with our objectives and moving us ahead - it's been tremendous.”

Hot August Hooves horsing around
derek jonathan kaye
West Kootenay Advertiser
The Hot August Hooves Trophy Show, now in its 14th year, once again drew huge crowds from all over the Kootenay/Boundary region and the US from August 16 to 18. The horse show was voted the best show in 2009 by the Horse Council of B.C. This year more than 45 riders competed for prizes and rosettes at the Trail
horseman’s grounds across from the Trail Regional Airport. Those standing close to the railings when the horses went by could feel the ground shaking beneath them. Some said it reminded them of placing their feet on the railway tracks and being able to feel a train coming from far away. But this rumbling didn’t come from diesel engines. Living, breathing locomo-
tives — of what must surely be a gothic masterpiece of domestication of any wild animal in the history of mankind — were making their presence felt. The overall weekend champion was Merna Boltz riding Royal King Zantanon, the English dressage champion was Kirsty Tikhauer riding Routimis Riders and the jumping champion was Kaylee Shukin riding O’rion’s Regal Star.
Many events were open to riders of all ages, which resulted in some friendly competition between riders of different generations. It got dusty, but if you couldn’t take that, you likely weren’t a true cowpoke. A little dust didn’t faze even the most genteel of riders. All of the participants and their horses were treated with respect and everyone rode off happy. See you next year!

No vampires here, just learning to fly SUBMITTED
The Kootenay Community Bat Project (KCBP) has received numerous calls from residents of the area who have found a bat on the ground, had a bat fly into the house, or have a bat roosting in an unusual location. “This is the time of year when the juvenile bats are learning to fly and their not very good at it” says Juliet Craig, Coordinating Biologist for the KCBP. “They fly into houses or fall on the ground and have difficulty getting up again.” Juvenile bats are born as pups in late June and July. In August, they are flying on their own and learning to forage. A bat that flies into a house can be removed by wearing leather gloves or oven mitts, or capturing it in a butterfly
net or box. If it is out of reach or cannot be found, doors and windows can be left open in the evening so the bat can fly away. A bat roosting in a strange location, such a low on a wall or under a patio umbrella is likely a juvenile and can be left where it is, as long as it is not at risk of coming into contact with people or pets. “If possible, bats are best left where they are” continues Craig. “However if a bat is found on the ground, it may need to be relocated. A bat on the ground does not necessarily mean that it is injured or sick, it may just be a juvenile that has had trouble flying.” Bats are usually not capable of propelling themselves up and off the ground. Generally, they crawl to a wall or tree, climb up it, and are then swoop down to

fly away. A bat found on the ground can be put into a pillow case or cloth shopping bag and pinned, open end up, to a tree or wall in the shade. That way the bat can hang upside down in a protected location during the day, and fly out when it’s ready in the evening. “The most important thing is not to come into direct contact with the bat” warns Craig. “It is very rare that a bat has rabies but still possible. If a person
has been at risk of being bitten or scratched by a bat then they have to either kill the bat to get it tested for rabies or have the shots themselves, neither of which is a good outcome.” The Kootenay Community Bat Project biologists recommend that anyone who has come into direct contact with a bat contact Interior Health. For more information about bats in the Kootenays, visit www. kootenaybats.com or call 1-855-9BC-BATS.

Sculpture Talk
2012
Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk.
Peter Vogelaar ‘Ancestral Memory’ (concrete and steel) Continuing with the theme he espoused in last year’s Ghost Salmon, Winlaw sculptor Peter Vogelaar brings us another poignant sculpture lamenting the impact of man on the original inhabitants and users of the local rivers. This time, his subject is not a bewildered bear swatting at non-existent salmon. It’s of an older First Nations woman holding a massive salmon. The message is as appropriate - and perhaps even clearer as time progresses unceasingly - soon there will be no one alive who holds the memories depicted here as the eldest among us finish out their lives. It is a sobering and powerful comment.
Like Ghost Salmon, ‘Ancestral Memory’ is sculpted in concrete and steel, although Vogelaar originally conceived and created the piece in sand. Legs tucked under her and in loose blouse/skirt, a Sinixt or Ktunaxa woman holds a huge salmon across her lap. Her mouth is open, gleeful at her stupendous catch. Necklaces cover her throat as she displays the fish like the prize it is, one hand underneath cradling its distinctive hooked-mouth head . There is joy expressed here as she exults in her good fortune, but the greater meaning of Vogelaar’s work is more sombre: it reflects on the end of an era, celebrating a time when there were no dams on the Columbia or any of the other regional rivers. A time when the fish could and did migrate freely in their spawning cycle of life and death so important to so many – people, bears and all creatures alike. That time is now lost and nearly forgotten as a first hand experience. “It’s startling how quickly an everyday occurrence can become a thing of the past – something current and future generations will only read about,” says Vogelaar. “ ‘Ancestral Memory’ is my homage to a lost way of life. It’s also a reflection on our seemingly unending ability to use up natural resources rapaciously. Species are going extinct all the time, and it sometimes seems as if it is just a necessary happenstance as we humans ‘progress’; believe me, I use the term with a certain incredulity.
lations – my intent in this work is not to be judgemental though. Rather, it’s to portray a time that is almost gone, when the rivers were untamed and a source of sustenance and, as I express here, joy at the bounty of them. In my work I often try to get people thinking about the natural world, and the impact of altering it at the rate we are.” It is also one of the reasons that over his forty some-years of sculpting he has always been comfortable in the ephemeral aspects of the talent. Recognized (along with several other Kootenay sculptors) as among the best in the world using snow, ice and sand, Vogelaar welcomes the fleetingness of it. “You create something magnificent and moving and visual, and within a few days or weeks it’s back to what it was – just the material in its natural form. There’s something to be said for that process, something I like about the temporary aspect of the vision.” He laughs and notes, “unfortunately for a show like Castlegar’s where the sculptures are displayed all year, I’ve got to be a bit more permanent.” His paean to the impermanence of a largely vanished way of life – and the pleasure of the big catch reflected in that nearly forgotten time - is affecting and moving. Pokey Park ‘Rock and Roll’ (bronze) Animals are one of Pokey Park’s favourite subjects .She is so talented and prolific that her bronze animal portrayals are immediately identifiable. Her style is distinctive and the species she has sculpted cover nearly the entire animal kingdom, domestic and wild. From tortoises to lions, birds to bulls, Park depicts them in her own unique style, giving them human characteristics and endearing her sculptures to a legion of collectors and admirers. Park’s love of wildlife and nature was developed as a child. Growing up, she spent hours on the Georgia coastal islands exploring, sketching and studying the creatures and their
natural habitat surrounding her. Living in various locations around the United States and traveling regularly throughout her career, she has continually refined her talent at capturing the wildlife and mythology behind it in distinctive singular studies, or combining them in totem sculptures. ‘Rock and Roll’ is a lighthearted piece whose subject has appeared in a slightly different form sans skateboard in her Zodiac Totem series. Combining a favourite posture assumed by monkeys in the wild (observed through extensive study by Park in Guatemala, Tanzania and Kenya) with an object of modern urban life, a skateboard, it is playful and lively.
“One of the things I appreciate most about the relative remoteness of the places I’ve traveled to is the unspoiled nature of the people, the landscapes and the animals that inhabit them. Little changes, even as the world shrinks. The special qualities of the animals I’ve been focusing on are what I’m trying to capture.”
“I wanted to juxtapose the balance of one of their favourite poses - arms crossed and seemingly precariously positioned, hunched forward inquisitively - with something completely foreign,” says Park. Thus ‘Rock and Roll’, the skateboard provides a linear counterpoint to that balanced, beseeching pose I saw so often in the wild.”
She has garnered critical acclaim and recognition for her whimsical animal sculptures through numerous public showings and installations. Combining character, mysticism and stylized realism – exemplified by her 2011 entry here titled The Shaman - each work Park creates radiates with intelligence, charm and personality. ‘Rock and Roll’ is no exception.
Always exploring and pushing her artistic creativity, lately she has been focusing on the impact of humans on other animal species around the world. A special interest in endangered and threatened species has meant extended trips to the Galapagos Islands, Peru, Chile, Mongolia, Turkey and Cambodia over the past few years, focusing on unique species in each country and exploring the mythology that links them to their local cultures’ past.
Exuberantly displayed in ‘Rock and Roll’, Park captures the nature and habits of her animal subjects and gives them a human aspect that is distinctive and joyful. The finished work showcases her ability to tie ethnographical study, expression and individual traits together in an exquisite bronze that is indelibly her own.

Big or small, easy to recycle them all marvin beatty West Kootenay Advertiser
Two ElectroRecycle Summer Ambassadors were in Castlegar on Thursday, Aug. 15 and paid a visit to the Bargain Bin to see first hand just how many small appliances and power tools get turned in for recycling. ElectroRecycle has been around since 2011 and is the only government-approved, not-for-profit recycling program in B.C. for electrical appliances. A team of six employees are travelling across the province to raise awareness of the more than 120 drop off locations where over 300 such items can be recycled. Their mission is to also encourage further recycling of such items. Bargain Bin owner Sheldon Radtke said about two stacked pallets of items get sent out from his store every month. “The Battery Doctors, from Kelowna, pick up all the way from there to Fernie,” said Krisandra Reid, one of the two summer recycling employees. Reid’s co-ambassador, Stephen Morgan, said it was nice to see
the Bargain Bin doing everything they hope to see and more. “Even the microwaves are stacked up correctly,” laughed Morgan. “Stacking microwaves is an art form. We’ve seen it done a lot of different ways.” Two “mega-bags” of small appliances were almost full, too, and loaded with shavers, coffeemakers, vacuums, toasters and more. Have something larger? The Trail Bottle Depot at 562 Rossland Avenue in Trail also accepts very large bench-top power tools and large exercise machines. Radtke stressed that after-hours drop off of items is not okay. “Last week, someone dumped a whole load of household junk and it cost me over $80 to get rid of it,” he said. The Bargain Bin is located at 163 Columbia Avenue in Castlegar just down the street from the Castle Theatre and is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The Salmo Detachment responded to over 40 calls of service relating to the festival. There were 14 prisoners, and one had to be taken to hospital as it appeared he was suffering some mental distress. The calls ranged from assaults, possession of a substance for the purpose of trafficking, other drug possession files, trespassing, theft, mental health issues, causing a disturbance, liquor files and vandalism. Salmo RCMP assisted with highway roadchecks; during one roadcheck after Shambhala a travel trailer was removed from the road for noted safety deficiencies.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week August 23, 2013
Tip of the Week: The last month of summer has begun. By now the cooler air and decreasing hours of daylight are evident. This intimate relationship with the sun’s light is the foundation of Western Astrology. For many, this year has been extra dramatic. The Mercury Retrograde cycle which began in late June and lingered all the way through to August 4 due to its recovery or shadow period was particularly turbulent. From a wider angle, close and potent alignments between Pluto, Uranus, Saturn and Jupiter continue to synchronize with revolutionary change. Among its effects is a growing emphasis on women assuming positions of power and authority. The rising demand for democracy and justice and the decline of power linked to religious institutions as we are seeing in the Middle East are other important themes. The crazy weather patterns that have and continue to result in massive flooding all over the world is certainly a factor. From the stand point of Chinese Astrology, this Year of the Water Snake is sure delivering. It is symbolic of the ‘shedding of skins’, which implies significant changes on personal and collective levels. Those who are tuned-in and are actively peeling their own skins by making significant conscious changes are better off. Otherwise many are experiencing circumstances beyond their control doing the peeling for them. For many others yet it is a mix of both. This cycle continues through to February 2014 so there is still time to tune-in and start peeling and shedding that old skin. I can help you to do so with greater awareness.

Although summer is not over yet, you will feel a definite switch this week. Your mood will become more sober and practical. This is your chance to get back to and perhaps complete unfinished business. Your playful spirit will return soon though, so use this window to be productive so you can get back summer fun with added peace of mind. A creative wave will continue and in fact increase this week. Yet it will be spliced with an urge to get to the bottom of things. This is hardly a superficial cycle. You want everything to be just right. Getting it that way will likely require extra effort. This rhythm will continue for the next several weeks so set a steady pace. A busy social time mixed with mini excursions here and there finds you in your element. The focus now is turning to home and family. The emphasis to create a healthier lifestyle also continues and will actually increase. Fortunately, your energy levels should continue to rise. Use this opening to establish a new norm with health in mind. You can expect your focus to diversify this week. There will be more demands from more fronts and you will feel more enthusiastic and adventurous as well. The spin-off will be upon your ambition levels. To feed this growing determination, focus to gain inspiration by entertaining the possibilities. Counter balance these with a healthy measure of realism by doing the numbers. A new momentum has been initiated. You may have encountered a few setbacks however, that linger still. As the week progresses, your pioneering spirit will rise high again. Accessing the full measure of your talents and resources will be evident. At deeper levels, you are being called to confront some very real fears to lay claim to latent powers. The Sun is now in your sign and this will activate your will and drive. Your focus will sharpen as well. Ironically, this will open you to new ways of doing things. Changes in your daily routine and rhythm will become increasingly evident as the month progresses. It may even prove to be a point of no return. All this will come spiked with a spirit of adventure.

The time has come to retreat for a while. You may still be busy behind the scenes, busy dreaming that is. This can prove very productive, as you work on your dreams and visions. Formulating a practical plan of action to realize dreams and to clarify visions is a key to success. Work to get clear on your ideal outcome and then outline all the steps you will take. A time of getting the attention you want and have earned continues. Yet, now it is time to push even harder, to stir the pot and shake things up. The urge to do so will increase over the next few weeks. To succeed however, you may have to pay extra close attention to tendencies to escape or procrastinate. Do a little war dance, voice your intentions and go for it! As old rhythms, patterns, appetites and priorities steadily dissolve you are challenged to replace them with something new. This is where the slow but sure process of building upon new foundations comes to the fore. Creating new alliances is featured. Intend to make extra efforts to set appointments and to reach out to be seen and heard. You are entering an expansive cycle. Your passions and ambitions have been rising steadily and you have been busy putting everything in place. Now it is time for a review. Cast a constructively critical eye upon developments to increase your confidence in their efficacy. Approach others with empathy, diplomacy and a negotiable attitude for best results. A time of endings and of new beginnings has begun. Fortunately, the emphasis leans to the beginnings end. Your main challenge now is to ensure that the ground soil for these new seeds is nutrient rich and sufficiently moist. It is quite important that you focus diligently over the next several weeks so your future aspirations can germinate in a healthy and timely manner. Making some specific improvements on relationship fronts is an emerging theme. Some of these may require outright renovation. Either way, you will be challenged to increase your focus and efforts over the coming weeks. Be open to advise, guidance and coaching as necessary. As well, collaborative efforts will prove more productive than solo work.

Community Back to school countdown: eight tips to help parents and students Submitted
(Grassroots Newswire) – The inevitable last minutes of summer are ticking away. The countdown has begun for back-toschool once again. And along with it, major retailers are bombarding parents, making sure they hurry out and buy the coolest new outfits, backpacks and gadgets for their kids. But this hyped-up, commercial back-toschool rush to equip students with new garments and gear often gets in the way of the real preparations that parents and kids should focus on for a successful school year. “The mad, back-toschool dash to purchase new clothes, backpacks, electronic devices and school supplies often over-
whelms parents and children alike,” said Julia Fitzgerald, Sylvan Learning’s Chief Marketing Officer in a press release. “What is often lost in this scramble is the fact that school is about learning.” “Starting a new school year can be a daunting experience for many students, and failing to get off on the right foot can set the tone for the rest of the academic year,” said Fitzgerald. “Parents need to take the right steps starting now to make sure their students are prepared to tackle new academic challenges with the right habits and daily routines. This includes trying not to be so consumed with showing up in the latest fashions; it’s not that important. That’s why Sylvan Learning has put together four sim-
ple tips for parents and four simple tips for children that can help boost student success in the new school year.” Here are four things parents can do to help their children achieve better academic results: Impose the TwoWeek Rule: With later bedtimes over the summer, children need to ease back into their school routine rather than having a sudden change their first day of school. Using the last two weeks of summer to re-introduce a school year bedtime routine will make waking up on that first day a lot easier. Reintroduce Regular Meal Times: During summer months, kids tend to grab a snack several times during the day. Parents can start reminding students to
get back into a threemeal-a-day schedule in order to regulate their system into the back-to-school mode. Nutrition is an important factor in academic performance, and eating a healthy, balanced breakfast and lunch keeps kids alert throughout the day. Family Calendar: Time management is tricky for everyone, especially kids and teens, but planning is an important way to save everyone’s sanity. Having major deadlines, due dates, events and extracurricular activities in one place helps kids visualize their week, manage their time and stay on track. Don’t Ditch Good Habits: If you and your child have established a good summer learning routine, when school starts try not to forsake all of
the fun reading, writing and art activities that kept your child engaged all summer. Here are four important things that students can follow to improve the academic quality of the school year, starting on day one. Organize: Organization is not overrated. Keeping notes, projects and reading materials in logical order helps students find what they need right away, cutting down on time spent tracking things down, and allowing more time for actual studying. Take good notes: Yes, it does matter. Taking good notes helps keep kids’ grades up, especially in middle or high school. To boost notetaking skills, students should practice picking out the “main ideas” in conversa-

tions, news reports, or magazine articles. Concentrate: Staying focused is easier for some kids than others. Students need to do their best to avoid distractions in class. This means keeping cell phones tucked away and being vocal if a chatty classmate is too distracting. Speak up: Students often can get tripped up by homework or test instructions. Students should know it’s OK to speak up if they don’t understand testing or homework directions. Students
should also listen carefully and spend plenty of time reading directions. Sylvan Learning also reminds parents that even with the best preparation many students still may need extra help to meet new academic challenges or to bolster study skills. Getting help at the first sign of trouble will prevent students from falling further behind as the year progresses. For more information about Sylvan Learning, visit www. SylvanLearning.ca.
