The soul of the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre, in the heart of Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island, lies in the research of scientists who work year-round studying, learning, and discovering.

In late March, I was given the opportunity to attend a Marine Youth Forum at the Bamfield centre with 17 other senior high FAELAN school students PRENTICE from throughout western Canada.

Together we studied the changes taking place in our oceans and the effects people have on this precious marine ecosystem.

So it was that one morning, on a hike in to Tapaltos Bay that we were given the chance to put theory in action by lending a helping hand to the environment: we spent two hours removing some of the debris abandoned by humans.

Styrofoam items, 316 of them, made up more than half of the 596 pieces of trash we were able to collect in just two hours, thus preventing them from returning to the sea where they could lead to the death of numerous organisms.

without distinctive shapes had also washed ashore, showing what a long time they had been floating in the ocean, slowly releasing toxins and threatening marine and wildlife.

As the only species on Earth that creates something that nature is unable to digest, it is, simply put, a necessity that we at least attempt to remove some of our discarded materials.

In a short, yet effective time, we collected more than 105 kilograms of trash.

When you consider that in 2006, two million plastic bottles were used every five minutes in the United States alone, the immensity of the problem begins to dawn; simple beach cleanups are not enough, even if they are an adequate starting point.

Every year 150,000 tonnes of plastic are dumped into the

ocean by the fishing industry alone. A common household object left floating in the ocean can deliver the final blow to an animal that mistakes it for food.

This is the case for a sea turtle that may eat one of the 13 billion plastic bags produced every year, mistaking it for a jellyfish that it would normally feed upon.

As well as sea turtles, 22 per cent of cetaceans and 44 per cent of seabirds have been found to have plastics in their bodies.

Birds have been discovered with their stomachs full of garbage, and when millions come together at the Kure Atoll in the Pacific Ocean to scavenge and feed their young, to whom they regurgitate their food, the indigestible human waste is passed on to their offspring.

It gets worse: the effects do not simply sit on the surface of our seas in the form of plastics that cause internal blockages, dehydration, starvation and death.

More than a third of the common fish in the deep sea, at the base of the food chain, have been found to have plastic fragments in their stomachs.

Public can get involved in fight against shoreline litter VANCOUVER, B.C. – Celebrating 20 years this fall, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, a conservation initiative of Vancouver Aquarium and WWF, is calling on Canadians to sign up as site coordinators or participants for this fall’s cleanup, Sept. 21–29.

The Shoreline Cleanup

is Canada’s largest directaction conservation initiative, mobilizing participants throughout the country to remove litter from its shorelines – anywhere where land meets water.

“Throughout its 20-year history, the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup has enlisted half

a million Canadians to collect approximately 1.2 million kilograms of shoreline litter – the approximate weight of 259 school buses,” says Jill Dwyer, program manager.

“Although these figures represent great accomplishments, they also indicate that there is much more work left

to do, and many more volunteers required to stem the tide of shoreline litter.”

Last year, Shoreline Cleanup collected 136,000plus kilograms of shoreline litter. As with every year, site coordinators will be cataloguing which litter items will be collected in the highest numbers on

Canada’s shorelines. Last year, the biggest culprits were cigarettes and cigarette filters (nearly 417,000 items collected), food wrappers/containers (nearly 99,000 items collected), and plastic bags (nearly 70,000 items collected).

These items landed the top spots on Shoreline

Cleanup’s 2012 “Dirty Dozen” list, along with caps/lids, beverage bottles/cans, food serving ware, straws/stirrers and more.

Fewer fires so far in ’13 Port Alberni fire department has released the fire statistics for 2013 after a number of city councillors asked whether there have been more fire calls this year than last year.

According to figures fire Chief Tim Pley provided, there have been 25 structure fires up to Aug. 13, lower than the 30 recorded by the same date in 2012.

However, there has been an increase in bush, grass and/or mulch fires—40 so far compared to 27 last year. There have also been a few more electrical fires (13) and boat fires (six) compared to this time last year which were nine and three respectively.

Solda explained that with only one bylaw officer on staff, residents need to contact the city if they know of nuisance properties that could pose a threat to safety.

A burned out house on Golden Street has finally been torn down, almost three years after a fire destroyed it.

On Nov. 2, 2010 a fire severely damaged a house at 5165 Golden St. In May, city staff told Port Alberni city council that damage to the house exceeded 75 per cent of its value and it has had maintenance issues since 2008. The house was torn down on Monday.

Coun. Cindy Solda has been a strong proponent of having derelict buildings dealt with in a timely fashion. She said this house had flown under the radar; the house is surrounded by large trees, making

to the city,” Solda said. “Enforcement is complaint driven.”

Bylaw officer Tim Hautzinger said the bill for this teardown would be sent to the owners and estimated the cost to be about

$10,000.

“The city won’t be on the hook for the cost,” Hautzinger said.

“All costs will be put to the property owner and if they refuse to pay, then it will be put on their property

taxes.”

Solda added that the building she is most looking forward to being dealt with is the old Tidebrook Motel on Gertrude.

The hotel portion was destroyed by a fire on

Jan. 13, 2012 and the site was hit again with another fire on Nov. 3, 2012 when the former restaurant burned.

City staff is in the process of having that building torn down.

Ocean responsibility starts with one: Prentice From / A3 I learned that during a process known as bio-magnification, the dangers are passed up the ecosystem and are multiplied continually until eventually humans are reached.

We are no longer at the outset of this problem; from the time man began to fish our oceans the impact has been felt by the seas around the globe. Our use of the oceans as a dumping ground has caused our world’s five major gyres, or systems of ocean currents, to be

filled with garbage; slowly rotating congregations of debris that span over unimaginable expanses.

The largest, the Pacific Trash Vortex, is estimated to stretch for hundreds of kilometres.

Sadly, while organisms have been dying because of us, it is only at the point when the cycle comes full circle and begins to directly affect us, that we take note.

Humankind is truly the most devastating being to have spread

its effect on the planet, although we are not the most populous organism.

We may not be the species to outlast all others, but we will surely have damaged the Earth far more than any other that has ever called it home. At the rate we are going, we will likely kill off a multitude of flora and fauna that have inhabited the planet far longer than we have.

The next time I choose to throw away something because

it loses its novelty and I spend money to replace it, I am going to stop and ask myself: is this deeply-entrenched consumerist psyche that has become the norm justifiable?

And in the meantime, if a group of caring teenagers is willing to collect the trash to help out their future, then perhaps a profound change of lifestyle is possible for every one of us.

That a consistent willingness to be kind, courteous and compassionate as a lifestyle creates a very different life experience than a lifetime of withholding ourselves and playing small. The simple truth is that we attract that which we emanate. What we give in our life eventually returns to us. And integrity in every possible moment, though rarely worth it in the short term, almost always pays off in the long run. Dr. David Hawkins sums it up very well in his seminal work Power vs Force.

The nobility of man is in his constant struggle with his own unasked for existence in a world which is a house of mirrors--- his sole support, his faith in the process of life itself.

“I have done many half marathons—this was my seventh—but I’ve never been in the top three for my category,” Martel said. “[On the podium] I was definitely shaking.

I didn’t expect that.”

The shy constable said it felt like she was in the Olympics as people waved and cheered when she carried a Canadian flag while marching in the opening ceremony with fellow Canadians.

Originally from Quebec City, Martel has been an RCMP constable for four years; the same amount of time she has served in Port Alberni.

She runs regularly in and around the city.

“I run every second day, so three to four times a week,” Martel explained. “It depends on the day. And with shift work, that can make it difficult.”

trip to Ireland was also a vacation with her friend, Ireland being a country she has wanted to visit. It was also an opportunity to both compete and meet other firefighters and law enforcement officers from around the world. She won her medals on Aug. 4 and arrived back to Port Alberni last week.

experience, she plans to attend the next World Police and Fire Games to be held in the United States in 2015.

Her fellow officers are proud of Martel’s accomplishment and representing the local detachment on the international stage.

“Const. Martel proved through hard work and commitment that she

can compete with the very best and make it to the international podium,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jen Allan in a press release.

“Her friends and colleagues couldn’t be more proud of her accomplishments.”

The event drew 6,000 competitors.

The 2015 games will be in Fairfax, Virgina.

April’s Boutique has reopened after a car smashed into the front of the store last week.

“I’m doing fine,” owner April Dallman said on Wednesday.

Last week Dallman was walking to the rear of her store with her back to the front window when a driver

hit the gas instead of the brake, jumped the curb and smashed her vehicle into the entrance of April’s Boutique.

No one was hurt in the accident, but the front wall of the boutique will have to be replaced.

Dallman doesn’t know how long renovations will take, but said she will

remain open during the work.

(An article in last week’s Alberni Valley News incorrectly stated the store would remain closed during renovations.)

She is dealing with insurance companies at the moment.

While the boutique’s front window has been boarded up for now, Dallman’s

daughter has painted some bright murals on the wood to greet customers.

“The only thing that’s missing is our front door [in a common foyer that she shares with Flandangles Kitchen and Gifts].

“It’s an open concept right now,” Dallman said.

Salmon Fest needs volunteers Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

Port Alberni’s 42nd annual Salmon Festival is fast approaching and volunteers are still needed to help out at the Labour Day long weekend event.

Cec Hamilton of the Kiwanis Club said the festival still needs volunteers to help serve food such as

burgers, and with the set-up and teardown of tents and chairs.

“We have to be out of there immediately after it’s over,” Hamilton said. “We especially need help putting everything away on the last day.”

Hamilton also said there is some concern with the amount of entries this year as this year’s festival will be all about the coho.

“There is a little worry that there won’t be many entries because of the lack of spring salmon,” Hamilton said.

“But we are still going to try and make it a successful event.”

Because of low chinook returns Salmon Fest organizers have agreed to a coho-only derby.

This year’s Salmon

Festival is Aug. 30 to Sept. 2 at Clutesi Haven Marina.

Valley groups share $15K in salmon enhancement grants VANCOUVER— Two salmon conservation groups in Port Alberni have received more than $15,000 in grants from the Pacific Salmon Foundation.

The Alberni Valley Enhancement Society received $14,450 for three separate projects and the Uchucklesaht Tribe received $1,500.

The funding was part of more than $464,000 in grants to support 57 projects in 45 B.C. communities.

The Alberni Valley Enhancement Society received funds to study the use of estuaries by salmon and to identify opportunities for habitat rehabilitation.

The society also received funds to improve salmon habitat in Deer Creek and at Night Hawk Farms, and to build a “counting fence” to study adult and

juvenile salmon in Kitsuksis Creek. The grants were partially underwritten by TimberWest.

“We are very thankful for this support from the Pacific Salmon Foundation,” said Jake Leyenaar from the Alberni Valley Enhancement Society.

“We would not be able to complete these projects without their support.”

The foundation also awarded funds to the Uchucklesaht Tribe to repair a storage space for a “counting fence” that aids the tribe in assessing Henderson River salmon.

Significant funding for the grants was generated through sales of the Salmon Conservation Stamp, the decal that must be purchased annually by anglers if they want to keep Pacific salmon caught in salt water

off the west coast.

Since 1989, the Foundation has received $6.5 million in stamp funds.

Earlier this year, the foundation successfully campaigned to return 100 per cent of stamp user fees to B.C. as part of the March 2013 federal budget.

“The success of our community partners provided a strong case for returning all of the stamp funds to B.C.,” said Dr. Brian Riddell, president and CEO of the Foundation.

“The new stamp money has the potential to generate an additional $1 million for future community grants, which we believe will help us adequately meet the needs of our community partners, like the Uchucklesaht Tribe and Alberni Valley Enhancement Society.”

Entrepreneur eyes legal grow-op for city Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

A local entrepreneur’s plan to open up a medical marijuana grow-op in Port Alberni is being welcomed by the mayor.

Mayor John Douglas said he welcomes all types of new businesses to Port Alberni and he views the legal marijuana grow-op as the equivalent of a pharmaceutical company wanting to open up in the city.

Last week, Dion Hopkins publicly spoke about his rezoning application that would allow him to open a medical marijuana distribution centre, grow-op and laboratory at the former Stephen’s Sheet Metal building on Bute Street.

“From my perspective, if a large medicine manufacturer came to town and they wanted to manufacture medicine in the community, we would welcome them,” Douglas said.

“This is a prescribed medicine mandated by federal government guidelines.”

Douglas said he met with Hopkins about two weeks ago to discuss his plans. Douglas also said any negative stigma associated with marijuana must change.

Hopkins, a civil engineer technologist, said the chosen location was decided after consultations with city planners.

If the rezoning is successful, he will invest more than $50,000 on security at the site alone, which is required under new federal government rules for commercial marijuana growers.

He explained that the grow-op in the building would be small and for research purposes as the main grow-op would be somewhere in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District.

The building would primarily be the main office for his company and a distribution centre for medical marijuana, which would be mailed only to those with a prescription, as per Health Canada’s new guidelines. People would not be able to walk in and access the drug.

“Health Canada does not allow for that,” Hopkins said. “We have to mail it to them

through Canada Post.”

Hopkins also hopes to distribute edible marijuana for patients not wanting to experience the high that comes from smoking it. However, Health Canada does not currently allow the production of edible products.

Hopkins explained his interest in medical marijuana started after seeing family members respond well after using it for various medical reasons. He has experience working with individuals setting up legal personal grow-ops, which will be banned when new Health Canada regulations change next year.

“A lot of people forget why this system was put in in the first place,” Hopkins said.

“People with AIDS use this to get an appetite to eat, people undergoing cancer treatment use this to treat severe nausea.”

Hopkins added that he was approached by a group called B.C. Releaf Marijuana to start a grow-op business because of his experience and that he picked Port Alberni because it is his hometown and he likes city council’s pro-business attitude.

Hopkins expects to makes a presentation at the next city council meeting regarding his re-zoning request.

Pot business still business Pressure’s on for skills training in B.C. A businessman has stepped forward and said he wants to open what amounts to a marijuana production and packaging centre in the former Stephen’s Sheet Metal building on Bute Street and Fourth Avenue in Port Alberni.

At first glance, and because of the stigma surrounding pot, the answer to his request might be an indignant “no way!”

Now, step back a moment and take a look at the business case.

The City of Port Alberni didn’t change the law allowing for commercial marijuana cultivation for medical purposes, the federal government did.

The transitional phase began in June; after April 1, 2014, Health Canada will be out of the medical pot business and so will any individual growers. People accessing medical marijuana will have to do so from a federally regulated commercial provider.

There is a licencing and security process for interested producers. They have to pass a security check, local law enforcement and fire authorities must be made aware of their business and the building has to adhere to strict codes to be accepted.

Dion Hopkins could be regarded as an entrepreneur jumping in at the beginning of this transition.

This proposal isn’t an illicit, hydro-stealing house-destroying grow op; legal producers won’t be selling pot to anyone who walks through the front door.

Moreover, the Stephen’s Sheet Metal building has been standing empty since the machine shop closed in January 2009, so there is the economic benefit of having a new business open up in that space.

Business doesn’t always have to be comfortable in order to be successful.

ICTORIA – Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk has offered some advice for students heading for postsecondary education this fall.

In a commentary sent to B.C. newspapers, Virk reminded students that his task “is to ensure post-secondary students obtain the experience and qualifications needed to put a paycheque in their back pocket.”

B.C. is forecast to have one million jobs to fill by 2020, through a combination of retirements and economic growth. More than 40 per cent of them will require trades and technical training, and for students, likely a move north.

“My advice to students is to look at where the jobs are based and tailor their education and training to match,” Virk

wrote. “Our population is concentrated in the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island, but as a resource-based economy, many directly and indirectly related jobs are located elsewhere.”

That’s not the only blunt message for students deciding on a career. While defending his ministry’s spending plans in the recent legislature session, Virk described some of the problems that are entrenched.

Parents, particularly in immigrant communities, push their children towards medicine, law, dentistry or engineering, he noted.

Students themselves gravitate toward areas that are familiar to them, such as teaching.

B.C. universities graduated 2,000 new teachers last year. Another 850 arrived from out of province and were

licensed to teach in B.C. During the same year, the B.C. school system hired 800 teachers. And many of those jobs were outside metropolitan areas.

It’s been hammered into us by the B.C. government’s endless “jobs plan” advertising, and a similar campaign

by Ottawa, that more students need to focus on trades and resource industries.

Virk acknowledges that his budget contains another $1 million for advertising, the same as last year, much of it to reinforce the need to fill skilled jobs. But he danced around the question of whether there will be spaces in technical programs.

running between a year and three years. And they have frequently noted that advanced education spending is budgeted to decline by $42 million over the next three years.

Virk said post-secondary institutions working with industry have produced 456 additional seats in high-demand programs for this year. It’s a start.

In July, Premier Christy Clark joined the chorus of premiers protesting Ottawa’s plan to claw back $300 million in federal training money to provinces, for its new employer-driven Canada Jobs Grant.

Clark and New Brunswick Premier David Alward were assigned to find an alternative to this drastic shift and report back in the fall.

As usual, the NDP spent lots of time grilling Virk about student debt and the alleged need to reduce it. Ministry statistics show that about 30 per cent of students take out loans from the federal-provincial program, and the average is $20,000.

One of the latest changes is a program of grants that go toward student debt as a reward for those who complete their chosen program.

With 23,000 students collecting $41 million in grants, it might be working. For all the fuss about student debt, students pay only about a third of costs. The rest is on taxpayers, whether it produces any useful education or not.

Mailbag: Feedback on dead grass, dead dollars and dead ends.

New road leads to nowhere To the Editor,

We have an unidentified group of loose cannons, specifically the Alberni-Clayoquot Transportation Committee, who will fire at anything anytime. In August 2012 they were told by the minister of transportation that the ministry wouldn’t be spending $65 million on a new highway to connect with Highway 4.

A year later, they’re at it again, stating that a new highway would cost $49.6 million.

They have yet to specify an exact route or explain how they arrived at such a low cost.

Neither do they realize that the provincial government has no money now for such an expensive project.

This unidentified committee seems composed of people who have no expertise in road building whatsoever and act, in my opinion, hurriedly in amateurish and unprofessional ways.

For example, they’re now rehashing the decades-old, failed approach of the late Fred Bishop and Gillian Trumper by

asking for letters of mayoral support from Cumberland and Comox-Courtenay.

Next we may well see a revival of touring cavalcades from those communities and others which end at Harbour Quay for tea and sympathy.

They could use the existing drivable route which ends in Cherry Creek. Wow!

Dead grass no bother to dead To the Editor,

Re: Grass could be greener in cemetery: Kenny, Aug. 15.

As we try to market our burg to the world­ including inviting Chinese youth here to complete their highschool education— like others, I must question peoples’ priorities.

For example, during the Alberni Valley’s notoriously crispy-hot summer months when, as Port Alberni’s city parks director Scott Kenny confirms “the grass burns out” at Greenwood cemetery, why consider spending several thousand dollars installing an irrigation system to keep the grass green?

It’s not worth it,

considering it’s only needed for maybe two or three months of the whole year. The grass will renew itself in very short time with the autumn/winter/ spring rains.

Surely the dearly departed would agree there’s better use for the city’s limited financial resources that would be negligible on the list of “bad precedents”.

Perhaps they’d rather a comparitively measly $250 be instead donated to a young Port Alberni citizen like Benson Wishart who could make a fine representative of Port Alberni to the Canada World Youth International Education Program in which he plans to participate.

As long as the grass is kept cut, neat ‘n’ tidy, brown grass is not dishonouring those who rest in the cemetery.

It’s more dishonourable to sqander money on an unnecessary irrigation system when a smidgen could be applied to advancing the community’s youth with some kind of municipal scholarship program set up just for the kinds of requests brought forward by

Mr. Wishart.

‘Canal’ Beach a misnomer To the Editor,

Thanks to our city council for their latest approval to clean up the beach property abandoned by closure of the old plywood mill. The site, already the recipient of extensive cleanup, is lot C of the old mill location at the south end of Third Avenue.

The call for a recreational beach here began years ago, and when the site is finally cleared of logs and other debris it will be a great gathering spot for beachgoers.

So far, the only error made in the plans for creating an excellent venue for watersports is the proposed name of the facility. “Canal Beach” is a misnomer.

The Alberni Inlet is not a “canal”.

It is simply an ocean inlet.

A “canal” is a man made excavation through land which, when flooded, is used by ships for passage from one ocean to another. Such as the Panama Canal and Suez Canal.

Our newly developed project in this city should

be named “Alberni Beach”: a designation which would better identify the place as being located in Port Alberni.

Stealthy dearth of tax dollars To the Editor,

A recent report that Ottawa is testing a $620,000 stealth snowmobile sent shivers up my spine.

Whenever ‘Ottawa’ and ‘stealth’ are used in the same sentence a voice inside my head hollers, “pickpockets!”

No doubt many Canadians have the same reaction after all the tales Prime Minister Harper and his Conservatives fed us about those infamous F-35 stealth jet fighters.

The Department of National Defence has nicknamed their hightech snow machine after the mythological shape-shifting god ‘Loki’ which seems appropriate.

I can’t help wondering how our Afghanistan veterans, who are getting the bureaucratic runaround, feel about Harper’s willingness to spend $620,000 for a snowmobile.

Aujla acclaimed in SD70 byelection Christopher Sun Alberni Valley News

Gurmail Aujla has been acclaimed as the new Alberni Valley school district trustee, representing the West Coast.

The trustee position became available after former West Coast trustee Barbie Mayor stepped down in June, citing changes to her work schedule as a legal nurse as well as general frustration with the school board over west coast issues.

Aujla, a retired

SD70 teacher, said he was encouraged to run.

“I wanted to contribute to the community on the West Coast and this gave me the opportunity to do so in an area I have some knowledge in,” Aujla said.

“Several friends of mine asked me to step up and I said sure.”

on what he plans to champion for on behalf of West Coast schools, insisting he wants to go in with an open mind.

Aujla studied psychology and history at UVic, earning a Masters in history and attaining a teaching certificate as well. He is married to Denise Aujla, who is president of the Pacific Rim chapter of Parents for French.

The couple lived in Victoria before moving to the West Coast where Aujla taught high school

in Ucluelet. After 10 years on the West Coast, the couple moved with their two daughters to Victoria so they could be enrolled into French Immersion as it wasn’t offered on the West Coast.

“We had the choice to either move to Port Alberni or Victoria, but my wife was a French immersion teacher in Victoria before so we decided to go there,” Aujla explained.

“We were greeted by our Vietnamese counterparts at the airport and have now been doing training sessions and exploring Hanoi a bit,”

Jaster related in an e-mail.

“Actually we have two teams doing orientation together so we are a very big group. It’s been a lot of fun.

“Everyone is full of energy and excited to finally get to our home community in Vietnam - Hoa Binh (Dan Chua).”

The Canada World Youth group will be in Port Alberni later this autumn.

Toquaht Bay still closed TOQUAHT BAY - The Toquaht Bay marina, campground and boat launch will remain closed until further notice.

The area was closed in March after tests found levels of arsenic, cobalt and selenium that exceed safety standards laid out in B.C.’s contaminated sites

regulation and could pose a health threat.

Further testing also found high iron levels in the soil, which also pose a health risk.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority’s medical health officer recommended the closure.

With the marina closure in place, the

Toquaht Nation has set up a temporary kayak launch near the community of Macoah. No camping facilities are available at this location.

Parking fees are $10 per vehicle per night.

Kayak launch fees are $20 per person.

VIHA is completing a detailed risk assessment.

Safeway grant helps man get around town A Safeway Mobillity Grant is helping Port Alberni resident Walter Kusmin get around town a lot easier these days.

Walter was diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, and uses an electric wheelchair to move around. The Safeway grant allowed him to purchase an accessible van.

“I now have greater independence and freedom of mobility.

Thanks to the Safeway Mobility Grant, I am able to go where I want whenever I want,” Kusmin said.

“I am so grateful to Safeway for providing me this grant.”

Canada Safeway and Muscular Dystrophy Canada have partnered in Make Muscles Move, a fundraiser now in its sixth year that has raised a total of $5,594,276 million in Western Canada.

The Alberni Clayoquot Regional District is giving $2,500 to Jericho Road Church’s Unity Celebrity Basketball Game on Oct. 4, billed as a fundraiser for Jericho Road and local service clubs.

Jericho Road Church associate pastor Harold “Lefty” Williams addressed regional directors last Thursday, telling them that he has invited numerous celebrities and athletes who will speak and entertain at the Athletic Hall. His original request was more than what he received.

“I am asking for at least $3,000,” Williams told the ACRD board. “This event is happening.

I sent an invitation to the [Premier Christy Clark] and I heard back that she is interested in attending.”

Some of the people confirmed to attend are NFL and CFL player Frank Murphy, recording artist Dewon, actress Paige Hurd and various other athletes, Williams said.

ACRD directors spoke favourably about Williams’s event. “I think it’s very positive,” said Cherry Creek director Lucas Banton. “There are no barriers to playing basketball. If you have a ball and a hoop, you can play it.”

“I think it’s important for that region and extremely beneficial for the community,” said Long Beach director Tony Bennett, who challenged the other directors to each donate $50 to make up the $500 difference in what the ACRD is giving and what Williams requested.

Williams also approached Port Alberni city council for funding in July but was referred to the Community Investment Program.

Port Alberni’s mixed fours team is victorious in a tournament at the Courtenay Lawn Bowling Club.

Bowlers win in Courtenay Port Alberni lawn bowlers Jake van Kooten, Elaine van Kooten, Stephen Forrest and Robin Forrest went undefeated to win the Zone Mixed Fours tournament in Courtenay on Aug. 10–11.

Zone clubs from Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum, Courtenay and Port Alberni were represented at this tournament.

Twenty-four teams

LAWN BOWLING participated and played four, 14-end games.

Port Alberni was the only team to go undefeated, winning all four of their games.

The games were pre-drawn, with Port Alberni playing all four of their games against Courtenay teams. Even though Courtenay had the

home advantage of knowing the playing surface, the Port Alberni team played through victorious.

Two games were played each day; Port Alberni’s second game on Sunday, against the other undefeated team, was to decide the tournament winner.

After 12 ends of play, the score was tied at 11-11. On the 13th end, with the Port Alberni team having played a good end and positioned their bowls slightly behind the jack [target for the game], skip Stephen Forrest played a skilled shot to trail the jack into the pack of his team’s bowls. He scored four shots to bring Port Alberni’s score to 15 over Courtenay’s 11.

With only one

end left to play, the Port Alberni team positioned their bowls around the jack and covered all Courtenay bowls, thus preventing any chance for Courtenay to score enough shots to tie or win the game.

At the trophy presentation, Port Alberni thanked Courtenay for hosting the tournament and all the organization that goes into making a successful tournament. Also thanked was the tournament sponsor, Chad’s Bar and Grill for providing some financial backing.

Last weekend (Aug. 17–18), Port Alberni Lawn Bowling Club hosted the Bowls BC Ca$h Triples tournament. No results were available by press time.

The Port Alberni Junior Hockey Society marked its one-year milestone on Aug. 9 as owners of the B.C. Hockey League Alberni Valley Bulldogs.

Director Russell Dyson said he is pleased with the results after the first year. “We’ve managed to take an organization that was in some trouble, stabilize it, and position it for future growth,” Dyson said in a press release.

“The team contributes to the health and well-being of the community and continues to provide exciting, high performance hockey for fans.”

The society purchased the Bulldogs on behalf of the community after an intensive fourmonth community fundraising campaign last year.

The Bulldogs and PAJHS are recognized around the league for the quality of their respective organizations.

Tofino, Ucluelet take on the tour Strong RCMP contingent from rugged west coast Susan Quinn Black Press

For the first time in the history of the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock, both Ucluelet and Tofino are represented by riders from their respective RCMP detachments.

Chris Squire, a constable in Ucluelet, started thinking about joining the ride when he spoke with several riders during a stop last year in his community. Ucluelet RCMP Sgt. Jeff Swann, while not a past rider, is a staunch supporter of the Tour de Rock, and he urged Squire to put his name in for a spot on the team.

“Jeff is a big supporter of the Tour de Rock,” Squire says. “He’s got four little kids and they all shave their heads every year. He talked me into it.

It’s a good cause.”

Squire has already raised close to $10,000 for the Tour de Rock, double his original goal.

Squire lost his grandmother to cancer, but says he hasn’t had much personal experience with the disease – unlike Tofino Cpl. Andrew Waddell, who along with his wife Vicki and son Justin, have all been diagnosed with cancer in the past few years.

Squire’s junior rider this year is Brett Wasylyniuk of Port Alberni, who has been treated for rhabdomyosarcoma, or a cancer of the muscles that attach to bone.

Tofino rider Waddell’s journey with cancer has been a long one. The 27-year RCMP veteran was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 1997; he had surgery to remove what could be removed, and radiation to try and hit the rest. He still lives with the tumour but says it’s stable.

Vicki has had melanoma, or early skin cancer removed, as well as some basal cell carcinomas.

Justin was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia when he was only two years old. He went through three years of chemotherapy between ages two and five. Justin is now 15 and loves to surf.

Waddell said the time is right for him to participate in the Tour de Rock. “The reason I’ve come up with is because I can. I have a family that supports me. We benefited from others and now it’s my turn, so families that can’t get out and fundraise can get out there and benefit.”

Waddell’s junior rider is James Albrecht, also from Port Alberni, and also being treated for rhabdomyosarcoma. Waddell met James at the end of July, and says he’s an amazing young man.

“It’s pretty astounding to see a young person in week 10 of 55-week chemotherapy bounding around the house like he is,” Waddell says.

“There’s guys like James that are living because money from cancer research is keeping them alive.”

Because Squire and Waddell both work in small

detachments and work opposite shifts, they haven’t done much riding together outside of mandatory Tour de Rock rides with the northern team. Squire, a reformed mountain bike rider, does a lot of solo rides on his road bike, but says he prefers to ride with a group.

Waddell is known as Tofino’s “bike cop,” so he is no stranger to cycling.

Waddell cycles 175 kilometres per week between Tofino and Ucluelet for his tour training.

“I go up Radar Hill every time I go by it at the turnoff (to Highway 4),” he says.

Of course, powering up Radar Hill is nothing compared to what children with cancer suffer through, Waddell says.

And that’s why he decided to tackle the Tour de Rock this year.
