Horse enthusiasts who enjoy riding through Langley’s beautiful scenery are giving back to the community by extending the trails they love so much - and they are inviting others to join them.

Members of the Back Country Horsemen of BC (BCHBC) Aldergrove Chapter have spent the past several months moving dirt, cutting brush, and clearing a pathway to extend the South Langley Regional Trail. Under the supervision of the Township of Langley’s Parks Design and Development Department, dozens of Back Country Horsemen secured funding, volunteered their time and effort, and used their own

tools and equipment for the project.

The hundreds of hours of labour have paid off, as close to 280 metres of new trail is now complete. “Our mandate is to give back to the community and keep trails open for everyone’s enjoyment,� said Peter Thiessen, vice chairman of BCHBC’s Aldergrove Chapter. “This is not just about horses. This is for the benefit of all users - joggers, walkers, people with dogs, and cyclists.�

The South Langley Regional Trail starts at Campbell Valley Regional Park at 216 Street and 4 Avenue. The shared use pathway continues east along 8 Avenue for about 11 kilometres before ending at 256 Street.

In 2011, the BCHBC’s Aldergrove

Chapter approached Township Council and asked for the money to complete the project and connect the trail through to Aldergrove Regional Park at 272 Street. The Horsemen assured Council they had over 50 offers of volunteer labour and machinery that would help reduce the costs. “It really makes sense to connect Campbell Valley and Aldergrove Regional Parks,� Thiessen said, “so we formed a committee to see if we were able to complete it.�

Back Country Horsemen’s mission is to give equestrians a safe and social opportunity to learn about trail riding and the wilderness experience.

But it also works with government,

businesses, and other recreational users to preserve and enhance public lands for all trail users, and to build new trails and other facilities.

Funds to continue the trail were committed by the Township last year, and the BCHBC went to work. A new section of trail at the east end of 8 Avenue has now been completed and built to municipal standards.

The Aldergrove Chapter, one of 17 in BC, has more than 100 members who contributed in a number of ways. During the course of construction, BCHBC members contributed 332.5 volunteer hours through meetings, general trail labour, tractor work, mini-excavator activity, and chainsaw work. One member,

Jack Breaks, supplied more than 160 machine hours on his own, Thiessen said, and the organization also contributed financially to the project and secured a grant from the Horse Council of BC. Through the BCHBC and Horse Council money, the volunteers supplied most of the material for the completed portion of the trail, along with culverts, fabric, and some gravel supplied by the Township. Valley Gravel donated a truck and transfer as well as additional material provided at a reduced rate, as a way of giving back to the community.

Volunteers are blazing new trail

The Horsemen and Langley Township are now ready to continue on with another section of trail near 8 Avenue and 261 Street. The volunteers formed a successful partnership with an adjacent property owner who is providing access for construction of the new portion.

Trail users of all kinds who would like to help are encouraged to get involved and continue working on the trails until the two pathways join up.

“This really is an excellent example of what can be accomplished through partnerships with dedicated user groups, and the result can be enjoyed by the entire community,” said Township Manager of Parks Design and Development Al Neufeld. “We are so pleased with what the Back Country Horsemen have accomplished and look forward to seeing the progression of this project.”

The trail is not yet open to the public as it needs more work as well as two new bridges at each end of the trail. The Back Country Horsemen are actively seeking volunteer help and donations to complete the work.

Joshua House, also known as Yahweh Saves Recovery Ministries, is proposing to operate two 10-bed men’s supportive recovery homes at 29183 Fraser Highway.

Joshua House is a Christian organization that currently runs recovery homes in Abbotsford and the surrounding area, assisting men who struggle with addiction.

The proposed homes are located on agricultural land and the proposal has already received approval from the Agricultural Land Commission to operate on the site.

The proposal states that as part of the recovery program, the men would be involved in the maintenance and development of the farm. The property is about nine acres with two homes and several small barns used for cows, goats, pigs and chickens.

Western painted turtles released back into wild Aldergrove Star

Greater Vancouver Zoo is involved in another important conservation program, to benefit the Western Painted Turtles.

The Western Painted Turtles are the only remaining native pond turtle left in B.C. and is a species of conservation concern.

As far back as 2009 when the project was first under review zoo management and staff showed that they had a strong interest in being involved with the conservation efforts of the Western Painted Turtle. However, it wasn’t until spring 2012 when the zoo participated in taking eggs from the emergency locations and bringing them back to be incubated at the zoo. The emergency locations at Katherine Lake and Sakinaw Lake are in high traffic areas and if the zoo would not have stepped in to help the turtles with the head starting program, they would not have survived.

On Tuesday August 13, an energetic group from the Western Painted Turtle Recovery team, which included caregivers from the zoo and several biologists from the Ministry of Environment, released 12 turtles back into the same location where they originally collected the eggs.

The Western Painted Turtle is named after the bright yellow stripes on its head, neck, tail and legs, and the glowing red on its plastron (shell covering the belly) and under-edge of its carapace (shell covering the back). They can grow to over a foot in length, and can often been seen basking in areas completely surrounded by water to avoid predators.

If you see a Painted Turtle, the best thing to do is to keep your distance. Be careful not to trample on turtle nest sites, and never take wild turtles home as pets.

Wildlife Preservation Canada (www. wildlifepreservation.ca) is also a very strong supporter of the Western Painted Turtle Recovery Program.

Norm Sherritt

Local historian, educator passes away Langley’s most meticulous historian and its only honorary pioneer, Norm Sherritt, died on Friday.

In addition to his lifetime interest in Langley history, he was a longtime teacher and principal in the Langley school system, and was much-admired by students, parents and teachers for his many contributions to the school system and students’ education.

Mr. Sherritt was born in Murrayville in 1920 and grew up in what was then the centre of much Langley activity, as the municipal hall and many businesses were located in the Five corners area.

His father, Ab Sherritt, was in charge of building the Murrayville Hall in 1928, which replaced an earlier hall that had burned down.

He took part in many aspects of community life growing up in Langley, and recalled fondly the brief visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Fort Langley, as part of the first royal visit to Canada in 1939.

The royal couple’s train was not scheduled to stop in Fort Langley, but school children from throughout Langley had gathered above the CN tracks to see their train go by. When they saw the large number of people

there, they waved to them from there rear platform until the train was out of sight, he remembered.

Mr. Sherritt became a teacher and started teaching at Fort Langley Elementary in 1940.

He later was viceprincipal at Langley Secondary and served for 11 years as principal at Aldergrove Secondary before retiring in 1980.

He served in the Royal Canadian Artillery in the Second World War. He married fellow teacher Mabel Main in 1942 and they resided in Cloverdale throughout their marriage.

They had two children, son David and daughter Linda.

He was a prolific contributor to many local history projects and his memory for detail and meticulous research skills were unexcelled. He had gathered an extensive library of information which he later donated to the Langley Centennial Museum.

In 1998, he was named the H.D. Stafford Good Citizen of the Year in Langley.

In 2005, Langley Township council named him an honorary pioneer of Langley and he regularly attended the Douglas Day dinners for Langley pioneers, many of whom he knew on a first-name basis.

RCMP helicopters have new home here They are the RCMP’s eye in the sky, but now Air One and Air Two will be a lot closer to home for Langley residents.

The BC RCMP Air Services section has moved their two helicopters from YVR South Terminal to the Langley Regional Airport.

Insp. Nigel Bushe, Officer in Charge of the Air Services, said the move to Langley makes them more central to get to crime scenes and it is also more cost effective. “To get our helicopter out of YVR we often had to wait 10 to 15 minutes to get clearance because it is such a busy airport,� said Bushe. “We didn’t get priority treatment, even if it was an emergency.�

Now Air One can get from Langley Airport to Whalley in three minutes.

It can fly over to Maple Ridge in that same time.

The RCMP have signed a longterm lease for hangar 47 and have been flying out of Langley since June. “Langley is dead centre,� said Bushe.

Right now there are two pilots and two tactical officers but Bushe is hoping that number grows to four or five. They are also hoping to bring a third helicopter on board. “We are hoping the third helicopter can be a twin engine. That will allow us to hover, and do border searches and work with the Americans,� he said.

Wire theft continues to be a problem in Langley and police need your help to stop this crime.

On August 15 Langley RCMP attended another cable theft on 64 Avenue between Glover Road and 216 Street. An unidentified male was using a stolen bucket truck to get access to the high wires. The suspect was seen to pull cables from the pole and then speed away.

Nearly 100 feet of wire was taken with an approximate value of $500.

The photograph of a 1999 Ford F450 bucket truck is identical to the one used in the wire theft.

Police believe it is likely the truck stolen earlier in the week from a business in the 19800-block of Fraser Highway.

Police are asking the public to continue reporting suspicious activity around telephone poles.

If individuals are seen climbing a telephone pole or working on the wire, or lingering around a hydro substation and don’t appear legitimate, please call 9-1-1 to report this activity to police.

Employees of Telus or those contracted by Telus will generally wear hard hats and Telus uniforms with their embroidered logo. In addition, there will be safety cones around their vehicles.

This bucket truck was recently stolen in this area and police believe the thief may now be using it for stealing wire here.

VICTORIA – Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk has offered some advice for students heading for postsecondary education this fall.

In a commentary sent to B.C. newspapers, Virk reminded students that his task “is to ensure post-secondary students obtain the experience and qualifications needed to put a paycheque in their back pocket.”

B.C. is forecast to have one million jobs to fill by 2020, through a combination of retirements and economic growth. More than 40 per cent of them will require trades and technical training, and for students, likely a move north.

“My advice to students is to look at where the jobs are based and tailor their education and training to match,” Virk wrote. “Our population is concentrated in the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island, but as a resource-based economy, many directly and indirectly related jobs are located elsewhere.”

That’s not the only blunt message for students deciding on a career. While defending his ministry’s spending plans in the recent legislature session, Virk described some of the problems that are entrenched.

Parents, particularly in immigrant communities, push their children towards medicine, law, dentistry or engineering, he noted. Students themselves gravitate toward

areas that are familiar to them, such as teaching.

B.C. universities graduated 2,000 new teachers last year.

Another 850 arrived from out of province and were licensed to teach in B.C. During the same year, the B.C. school system hired 800 teachers. And many of those jobs were outside metropolitan areas.

It’s been hammered into us by the B.C. government’s endless “jobs plan” advertising, and a similar campaign

by Ottawa, that more students need to focus on trades and resource industries.

Virk acknowledges that his budget contains another $1 million for advertising, the same as last year, much of it to reinforce the need to fill skilled jobs. But he danced around the question of whether there will be spaces in technical programs.

NDP critics say the waiting list for these kinds of programs at Kwantlen University and B.C. Institute of Technology are running between a year and three years. And they have frequently noted that advanced education spending is budgeted to decline by $42 million over the next three years.

Virk said post-secondary institutions working with industry have produced 456 additional seats in highdemand programs for this year. It’s a start.

In July, Premier Christy Clark joined the chorus of premiers protesting Ottawa’s

plan to claw back $300 million in federal training money to provinces, for its new employer-driven Canada Jobs Grant.

Clark and New Brunswick Premier David Alward were assigned to find an alternative to this drastic shift and report back in the fall.

As usual, the NDP spent lots of time grilling Virk about student debt and the alleged need to reduce it. Ministry statistics show that about 30 per cent of students take out loans from the federal-provincial program, and the average is $20,000.

One of the latest changes is a program of grants that go toward student debt as a reward for those who complete their chosen program.

With 23,000 students collecting $41 million in grants, it might be working.

For all the fuss about student debt, students pay only about a third of costs. The rest is on taxpayers, whether it produces any useful education or not.

Virk is under instructions to review the student loan program “to find further improvements to meet students’ needs.”

Given the magnitude of the gap between what skills our education system produces and what the economy needs, a larger shift in priorities is needed.

Editor: The English language is rich in its variety, but seems surprisingly limited when it comes to expressing gratitude. We seem to have to make do with two simple words, thank you, when often we wish to convey much more than that.

On Sunday, Aug. 11, two remarkable people, Robin and Art Bandenieks, opened their glorious Aldergrove property and their big hearts for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. and the 2013 Ascent of Kilimanjaro for Alzheimer’s, of which I am a part.

More than 100 supporters gathered in summer sunshine to raise awareness of the needs of dementia victims — present and future — and to push my fundraising goal past the $10,000 mark. Thanks to their efforts and the individual contribution of one remarkable Langley resident, my total as of Monday, Aug. 19, stands at $11,441.

Thanks are due to so many, starting with our omnipresent local media, whose support in covering the campaign and the event helped considerably. Our silent auction was aided magnificently

by Aldergrove-area businesses, many of whom are asked constantly for donations and who never fail to respond, and by generous individual contributions.

Our superb musical entertainment was courtesy of Braces and Cuffs, supplemented in the unavoidable absence of its key fiddler by some impromptu guests.

Gratitude is also due to a volunteer crew of Karen and Bob Long, Pauline Buck, Tannis Percival and Mike and Matthew Brownie, without whom the show literally would not have got off the ground; also to the culinary talents of Alex Bandenieks.

More than 70,000 British Columbians already suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia and the toll is predicted to rise dramatically as baby boomers age. The effects of dementia often land heaviest upon the shoulders of the caregivers, who have to juggle existing responsibilities (families and jobs) with the demands of loved ones slowly vanishing from the lives they knew.

I shall be leaving next month to try to reach Uhuru Peak, at 19,341 feet the summit of Africa’s tallest massif. The five-day ascent will test my abilities to handle high altitude and the vagaries of a strenuous hike. I shall be taking with me some ashes of a friend’s husband who recently died of Alzheimer’s, to honour his memory and remind me of my good fortune in having the health to tackle such a climb.

The victims of dementia are often isolated inside walls of silence not of their design, but I hope that those whose actions can speak for them will make sure their cries for help will continue to be addressed.

Pepper spray is cruelty

Editor: Recently my outdoor cat has been pepper sprayed in my neighborhood (Springfield). I can understand not wanting outdoor cats on your fence or in your yard, but this is beyond too far. Whoever has done this clearly has never had it done to themselves.

This is very dangerous for both cats and unsuspecting owners who, like myself, are likely to pick up the half-blinded cat not knowing what’s dampened their fur until it’s too late. The pepper spray spread to my arms and face (eyes, nose, mouth) and was extremely painful for hours. Some people are more reactive to pepper spray than others, but cat owners should not be having to go through what I did.

Editor: Maybe the traffic “geniuses” that opted to close one of Langley’s busiest east-west roads, 56 Avenue for six months might have had the forethought to realize what a nightmare this would create at the Langley Bypass and the Fraser Hwy? Even on a Saturday, traffic detouring eastbound was backed up into the north-south through lanes.

Maybe a “bit longer” advance left-turn light might be in order?

Maybe these geniuses could call in the Army to put in a Bailey bridge as well???

The RCMP Musical Ride is coming to Langley, Aug. 23 to 25, at the Thunderbird Show Park.

Proceeds from the ticket sales for the Ride will go to the Special Olympics. “It’s always exciting to see the RCMP Musical Ride come to our community.

The Ride represents the proud traditions of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Canada. We are particularly fortunate the proceeds will benefit such a worthwhile cause as the Special Olympics,� said Langley RCMP Supt.

Aldergrove Dodgers’ volunteers such as this grounds crew kept the Aldergrove Athletic Park in prime condition for the Western Canadian Bantam AAA Tournament here on the weekend. Many of the out-of-province guests commented on the outstanding quality of the local ball park and facilities here. If you don’t know it’s there, it may be easy to miss. But once you go through the gates and stroll down the pathway, you will discover an oasis that offers environmental education, entertainment, and a chance to explore the beauty of nature.

The Langley Demonstration Garden, nestled between Fraser Highway and Langley Regional Airport, has settled into its new location and the public is encouraged to come take a walk, learn about compositing and Water Wise gardening, or enjoy the annual Blackberry Bake-Off being held August 21. “Come any day, dawn to dusk: the gates are open and we always welcome visitors,� said garden coordinator Ava Shannon.

Shannon, along with garden educator Emily Huang and assistant gardener Danielle Hamel, works with the Langley Environmental Partners Society in partnership with the Township of Langley to run the Demonstration Garden, which moved to the 21200-block of Fraser Highway this spring after 20 years in Murrayville.

Located in the Derek Doubleday Arboretum, the garden features beds showcasing sustainable garden techniques and native plants, composting and rain barrel displays, and picnic

tables, all surrounded by scenic fields, trees, and walkways. “Walkers have discovered it and people come and sit at the picnic table and enjoy the birds,� said Huang. “It’s nice to see people just sitting and enjoying.�

Garden staff are hoping more people will learn of the garden’s new location and take advantage of the information it has to offer all year round. Tours of the garden and demonstrations on sustainable gardening and composting methods are available during events and anytime the garden is open.

While there is enough signage posted to allow guests to learn from walking around in self-guided tours, “We are always happy to put down our trowels and give a tour,� Shannon said.

The public is also encouraged to attend the annual Blackberry BakeOff and Open House on Wednesday, August 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A Demonstration Garden tradition that sees local bakers vie to be named the community’s favourite blackberry chef, the 2013 event will feature tastings, a barbecue lunch, live music, kids’ corner, and more local vendors than in the past.

pital being the Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster and the nearest doctor often hours away, caring for the sick and dying was crucial work for Langley’s health care practitioners.

There are bright notes in the medical history, too; speaking about the hospital, which opened in 1948, nurse Iris Mooney noted, “You just saw the whole community grow and evolve around the maternity [ward].�

Shooters from Langley Rod & Gun Club brought home two gold medals from the 2013 Canadian National Pistol Championship held in Calgary on the weekend of August 2-4. Dorothy Ludwig of Langley is the 2013 Canadian National Women Airpistol Champion, and Jessica Auton of Langley is the 2013 Canadian National Junior Women Airpistol Champion. Jessica is 16 years old and competed against shooters from 16 to 20 years old from almost every province in Canada.

Zoo to unveil its ‘best tech’ secret Aldergrove Star

On Thursday August 22, from 2 to 3 p.m., the Greater Vancouver Zoo will make their digital mark on the Zoo Experience.

In partnership with innovative Abbotsford-based marketing firm, Jelly Marketing, the Aldergrove facility is hosting an exclusive event to launch their brand new website and e-learning experience.

Inspired by the Zoo’s desire to enhance the zoo-goer experience through technology, Zoo 3.0 has developed out of an exciting new partnership with Jelly Marketing.

Jelly and the Greater Vancouver Zoo have developed a fresh way to make a lasting digital footprint on BC Tourism and the local community.

“We love this place!” says

Jelly Marketing’s lead strategist, Darian Kovacs, “We are so excited to take the zoo experience to the next level.”

Jelly’s ingenuity has certainly done that. The new website features Zoo 3.0, an all-access e-learning portal complete with rare footage and facts about the zoo’s featured animals: Macaw, Grizzly Bear, Hippopotamus, Siberian Tiger, Oregon Spotted Frog and Muskox.

The story of the Greater Vancouver Zoo began in the late 1960s when world traveler and businessman, Pat Hines, purchased 120 acres of land in Aldergrove. It was ideal for the realization of his dream to create a game farm. At first registered as the World Wide Game Farm Ltd. it became known as the Vancouver Game Farm,

Zoo moves into “high-tech” age. which had its official opening on August 20, 1970.

In 1999 the name of the Greater Vancouver Zoological Centre was changed to the Greater Vancouver Zoo, along with a change of owners and with further improvements for the facility and its inhabitants. In 2012, the zoo was focused on its

successful reaccreditation with CAZA (Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums), and building their new Animal Care Centre for sick and injured animals.

Zoo 3.0 marks an amazing tech development in the zoo experience - an event not to be missed. On August 22 Zoo 3.0 will be unveiled at the exclusive launch party hosted by Jelly Marketing and the Greater Vancouver Zoo. Come get a look at some of the world’s most unique creatures.

The B.C. Select Pee Wee Hericanes brought home the gold from Redcliff, Alberta at the Western Canada Baseball Association Peewee Girls Championship held August 8-11.

The Her-icanes began the tournament Friday with a convincing 12-2 win over Team Alberta.

Saturday then saw the girls follow up with a pair of back-to-back wins, a 25-11 victory over Team Manitoba, followed by a 17-0 win over the Okanagan Halos.

On Sunday, the Her-icanes played the host team of Alberta in the finals. The game went back and forth for the first three innings but the offence caught fire in the fourth inning after Team Alberta’s starting pitcher suffered a tournament-ending injury.

B.C. carried on to rally to a 13-3 victory and claim the gold.

Without a doubt it was the phenomenal pitching, solid defence and extraordinary bursts of offence — including four out of the park home runs — that led to the Pee

Wee Her-icanes’ victory.

The B.C. Select team is based in Aldergrove and includes two Aldergrove players, sisters Christina and Victoria Ross.

The Her-icanes team roster consists of Gulseerat Boparai, Emma Brezdan, Elizabeth Gilder, Kaila Kondo, Emma March, Isabella Melnuk, Svetlana Moukanhov, Abby Parson, Alexa Robichaud, Christina Ross, Victoria Ross, Kaya Soukawa, and Veronica Wong.

Players needed for Blaze fall ball Aldergrove Star

Players between the ages of 13 and 18 are invited to join the Langley Blaze fall ball program.

The program is a six-week instructional program run by a team of eight Blaze coaches, who all

have college or pro-playing experience.

The fall season begins Sept. 3.

All players in Langley, Aldergrove, Cloverdale and Maple Ridge are eligible to play for Langley.
