Lift station flood proofing project approved by council

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye With flooding a big concern in Alberta, the Town of Ponoka is floodproofing a lift station along the Battle River.

“They estimate for a 45-day frame to complete the project,” says CAO Brad Watson.

The tender includes a 10-per-cent contingency allowance and five-percent GST. Also $17,000 is needed for engineering of the plan. The project will be paid for from grants to municipalities from the federal government.

Coun. Izak van der Westhuizen asked what sort of protection the berm would give. “Does that lift it above the 100-year flood?”

An earthen berm will be constructed to protect the lift station in the event of a 100-year flood in the Battle River, explained Watson. Approvals are also in place with the province.

“Alberta Environment were very pleased with the work that’s been done,” added Watson.

Election planning Advance polls have been set for Oct. 9 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Town Hall. Votex is the company

handling the polls.

“That’s the date that the voting machines are available,” said Watson.

Those in the electorate who are unable to vote on the municipal election day Oct. 21 can use the alternate dates.

New floor scrubber for arena A new floor scrubber has been purchased for the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex — on sale at $11,995 from $16,362.89.

The request came from complex operator Kelsey Hycha in an effort to deal with an increase of users at the building. Watson said the machine can do the work of three scrubbers and allows for greater efficiency.

In a letter to councillors, Hycha said the machine was tested on the rink surfaces and lobbies prior to the Ponoka Stampede.

“It can do the work faster. It will greatly reduce the manpower time and do a superior job,” said Wes Amendt, director of community services.

The older scrubber will be used at the Kinsmen Community Centre.

There were no objections.

If two trucks come at once then there is also lag time for the trucks.

“It’s not handling everything that they’re doing now,” said Cutforth.

There is no direct cost to the county as users must pay for the disposal of sewage but Ponoka County has to ensure a site for county residents to dump. The total cost for the upgrades is $75,000 and Cutforth recommended they pay for half.

Another option available to the county is to use the Town of Ponoka’s treatment plant but a new cell would have to be built to accommodate the product. “A new cell would cost much, much more.”

Hinkley was in favour of the plan considering the cost of a new storage cell and council approved the request.

Pension plan change The Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP) has audited the county’s pension plan and noted a slight error. Each employee class must be identified whether they opt-in to the plan.

“The change actually is with the (Bluffton) landfill attendants,” explained Cutforth.

There are two employees there who opted out of the plan and the county needed to acknowledge that.

Election time The county works with Wolf Creek Public School and St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Schools during election time. Polling stations include voting for the school divisions and the county assists with that.

Nomination day is Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. to noon, and election day is Oct. 21 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Intersection treatment The intersection of Secondary Highway 771 near Westlake Marina is undergoing some treatment by a developer. Cutforth recommends the county take care of its side of the intersection at the same time.

Paying for the project could come out of the cash reserve and paid for next year during budget deliberations.

He estimates the cost to the county at $150,000 for the treatment, which was approved by council.

Some experiences worth the wait speed Internet, credit card purchases, text messages, smartphones and an endless array of instant gratification available to us. So waiting for baby was a real stretch of my patience — and yes, I realize that I was not the one carrying him for nine months.

In the days leading up to our baby’s birth it was all we talked about and almost all we could think about. Our son, Asher, arrived safe and sound a mere hours before his “due date,” right on time you might say. As a special side note, our next-door neighbors received their own special bundle only 11 hours after ours, making for a fun and busy time at the Ponoka Hospital and Care Centre.

All of the waiting, hoping, and anticipation got me thinking: what in life do I wait for as eagerly as the birth of our child? The Gospel of Luke recounts the story of Jesus’ birth and highlights Stephen and Anna, two people who waited intensely to meet the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ. Reflections of Ponoka The continuing saga of the Morningside Sweets

By Patti Sweet Davidson and Mike Rainone for the News It wouldn’t be fair to hog the spotlight when we are talking about the Sweet family saga from in and around Ponoka and districts, so I prevailed upon Rob Smith to help me straighten out my understanding of how the heck we are all related. vehicles, which were the first to appear in the lives at Calmar, and Donna (1956) in boomtown Fort McMurray.

Now, here is the family I know most about after my conversation with Rob. Bertha, a daughter of Leroy/Roy/Skinny married R.T. Smith in 1947.

R.T. was well known around town, and if you ever wondered what his real name was it was Robert Theodore, so I guess the Sweets weren’t the only ones who did this kind of name changing after all.

The Smith family lived in Morningside practically forever, with Bertha working at various places at various times, including having the restaurant at Alf Clarke’s Gulf Service station on Highway 2A near Ponoka, then daily at Telford’s Cafe, which is now under the Bank of Commerce. She would later be employed on the cooking staff of both the Ponoka General Hospital and the Alberta Hospital Ponoka, the latter from which she retired due to the onslaught of arthritis.

Meanwhile, R.T operated the family farm, raising cows, pigs, chickens, sheep and registered quarter-horses. The children of this marriage were: Nettie (1949), Doug (1952), Rob (1954), and the twins, Delores and Doreen in 1958. Nettie married Ray Winslow and was the face of the Ponoka Farmers’ Market for 28 years; Doug works at the Centennial Centre and still lives at the old farm home; Rob is an honest-to-goodness truck driver and congenial jack of all trades, while Delores moved to Ontario and Doreen works at the Centennial Centre and lives in the Nelson Lake area.

Patti thanks Carol Murray for a wealth of information, to Rob Smith, and everyone else who helped to put the Sweet family saga together with great detail and effort in keeping up with their long and colorful history and ongoing contributions to our community and districts. “Our proud heritage can easily be lost, forgotten, or never known at all, but we must heartily always appreciate the great efforts and keen spirit of those who help to keep it all together.” There is no doubt that for this huge and still growing and hardy clan: “How Sweet it has been, and hopefully always will be.”

Municipal council exists for one purpose: to govern.

It is accountable to the taxpayers and the community as a whole to see that the corporation achieves its annual and long-term goals such as economic growth, low taxes, sufficient police and fire protection, and maintaining infrastructure.

For some, sitting on municipal council is a matter of civic duty; for others it is an opportunity to push a personal agenda, to oust an out-of-control incumbent, or to interfere in the administration of the municipality.

It is not council’s job to oversee the day-to-day operations of the corporation — that is the job of the CAO hired by council.

The grassroots is fertile ground for the propagation of all sorts of creatures who feel they have “something to offer” or who wish to “give something back to the community” and offer themselves up for election.

Beware the axe-grinder or one-issue candidate whose purpose is to sabotage the community agenda for his own political ends.

There is a tremendous time commitment attached to being a councillor. In addition to the regular bi-monthly meetings there are daytime and evening committee meetings, special breakfasts to attend and impromptu meetings when you are cornered in the grocery store.

Your phone will ring day and night with calls from citizens who insist that you do something about barking dogs, potholes and snow removal downtown.

If you have no interest in municipal development plans, land use bylaws, endless transportation studies or pouring over departmental budgets and monthly reports, do the community a favour and keep your nomination papers in your back pocket on Sept. 23, nomination day.

If municipal council is in touch with its residents, it enjoys the confidence and support of the community; it reflects the needs and ambitions of the community, contributing to the growth and benefit of the local economy.

Councillors must offer visionary leadership that encourages business and residential growth, and which opens the door to new opportunities for success.

Was the Korea War worth the losses?

July 27 marked the 60th anniversary of the armistice ending the Korean War. Although only a young child at the time, it was a war that I was vaguely cognizant of.

One reason for this awareness came via household chatter about a Chicago cousin losing a toe to frostbite while serving with the American army there.

Another reason was an unruly neighbouring Dublin housing estate was popularly known as Little Korea, an appellation not intended as a compliment.

The conflict’s origins could be traced to the closing days of the Second World War. Japan had occupied Korea since 1910, so the 1945 Japanese collapse created a void that was filled by the Soviets in the northern part of the peninsula and the Americans in the southern part.

In due course, independent states were established in both halves, neither of which was remotely democratic. Still, the fact refugee traffic ran overwhelmingly from north to south gives an indication of relative desirability.

Then, with prior Soviet blessing, North Korea invaded South Korea in June 1950, operating under the assumption the Americans wouldn’t get involved. After all, U.S. Secretary of State Dean Acheson had publicly excluded South Korea from America’s defensive perimeter.

That turned out to be a significant miscalculation on North Korea’s part. Under the auspices of the UN, the Americans quickly organized an international response. By autumn, the initially triumphant North Koreans were in dire straits, at which point 300,000 Chinese troops came to their rescue.

And so it went back and forth until the July 1953 armistice. When the war concluded, the new boundary line was little changed

from prior to the invasion. But the human cost had been substantial. Counting Korean civilians, several million people were dead, including more than 36,000 American soldiers and more than 300 Canadians.

Inevitably, the war had a mixed effect on reputations.

U.S. President Harry Truman left office at the beginning of 1953 with his popularity at a low ebb among both the general public and the commentariat. Although not the only reason, the Korean stalemate was a significant contributing factor.

General Douglas MacArthur also had problems. Thanks to his Second World War exploits and subsequent key role in the reconstruction of post-war Japan, MacArthur was an obvious choice to command the UN forces in Korea. And his stock rose further following the successful amphibious landing at Inchon in September 1950.

But things went downhill after the Chinese entered the war, and MacArthur’s public disagreement with Truman led to his being removed from command in April 1951. It was an extremely controversial decision, so much so MacArthur’s considerable popular support and oratorical skills even led to speculation he might nab the 1952 Republican presidential nomination.

But he didn’t. Instead, MacArthur gradually faded from public life, while remaining a hero to significant numbers of people. When he died in 1964, an estimated 150,000 mourners paid final respects.

Eisenhower dramatically promised if elected he would “go to Korea” to personally assess the situation. He did just that as presidentelect, and the war ended six months after his inauguration.

While the mutually exhausted stalemate had undoubtedly created propitious conditions for an armistice, Eisenhower’s propensity for discreet ruthlessness was also called into play. South Korean president Syngman Rhee wanted to continue fighting, so Eisenhower cut back on fuel and ammunition supplies for Rhee’s army. Then, to underline the point, he threatened a total withdrawal of American forces. Rhee got the message.

Cold War historian John Lewis Gaddis has noted two things about the Korean War. One, it established the precedent of a country with nuclear weapons being involved in a bloody and protracted conflict without opting to use those weapons. And two, although Soviet and American pilots did surreptitious battle with each other over Korean skies, the mutual interest in preventing escalation was such that both countries chose to cover it up.

So here’s the question. On balance, would it have been preferable to stand back and allow North Korea to have its wicked way?

Different people will honestly answer that differently but there’s no doubt about one fact. Sixty years on, South Korea has evolved into a full-fledged democracy and economic powerhouse, while North Korea remains a Stalinist basket case.

Christianity not the only way for spiritual growth Dear Editor: After reading Julian Ross Hudson’s letter to the editor in the paper last week, I felt compelled to write a letter of my own.

In Evone Monteith’s original letter to editor two weeks ago, she called for “Christians to admit that theirs is not the only way to connect with the higher powers of the universe…” Hudson attempts to restate this quote in his own letter, writing “Christianity should toss in the towel on its own claims of exclusivity with respect to being the only valid way of approaching God.” I hope the reader has noticed a great assumption in Hudson’s approach. He has defined “higher powers of the universe” as “God.” Hudson then continues to state polytheistic gods are not true gods as they do not have ultimate dominion over each other. A quick check of the dictionary reveals four definitions of the word “God,” one of which is the position supported by Hudson, and three are definitions that highlight traits all but possessed by gods in polytheistic belief structures.

I do not point out these statements as being “right” or “wrong” but what I do find disturbing is they imply a “correct” way of living and believing. One of my high school religion teachers would always say, “Religion is like a mountain, we may see different paths but they all lead to the same peak.”

While I do believe there is some truth in the inevitable rise and fall of civilizations, I think Hudson’s position on this subject highly reflects he is not a part of the disappearing civilization. The language in his letter seems to suggest, and I could be wrong, that preservation of the aboriginal community in its traditional form, using taxpayers’ money, is a folly because the culture should adapt or fade away. To my knowledge, our federal government does not have a mandate to preserve

“native religion,” rather aboriginal cultures and rights.

Secondly, these structures are a direct result of agreements and treaties made in the past and present. I think many would agree the current structures in place are not ideal but who can fault either side for fighting for what they believe in? I hate to use theoretical situations but imagine if another nation swooped into Canada, obtained power and forced you to change to their norms? I doubt most readers would shrug their shoulders and say “survival or bust.”

I think this is especially potent when you consider the loss of spirituality and meaning, as both are, in my opinion, core concepts and structures for human survival. The history of all major world religions are dotted with battles and conflicts over this very idea!

I have to say I have nothing against Christianity and find my Christian friends are some of the most supportive and wonderful people I know. However, I do take issue when someone wields their belief structure as the only correct method of thinking. I feel it is completely unfair for Hudson to judge the aboriginal community as being “incapable of adopting socially progressive teachings” and “imprisoning the minds of its members” when his own belief structure is highly regimented and deeply rooted in the same beliefs that have existed for thousands of years.

Next time you attend a mass or service, I ask you to take a poll of how many of your members are: 1) homosexual; 2) living together without being married; 3) recently received an abortion, or 4) believe in euthanasia. If you are part of a highly progressive denomination, then I have committed the same folly I accuse you of. If not, then you might want to adopt some socially progressive teachings, or let another culture come along and do it for you.

Bylaws apply to all Dear Editor: I would like to know why Ponoka residents are asked to wash and remove labels from glass that is put into the down town recycling when it all ends up in the town dump. Why waste the water?

I would also like to know why the town sends out threatening let-

ters to residents who are slow at cutting their grass or weeding, when the Central School playground is surrounded by unsightly dangerous decaying and falling trees? Do municipal bylaws # 541{a} emergency and #550 not apply to all?

Splash park issues plague town employees

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye The splash park has been plagued with issues since the day the volunteer committee handed the playground over to the Town of Ponoka.

Two problems appear to have arisen at the splash park: Alberta Health Services is receiving water samples with inconsistent results and a chemical sensor is causing the splash park to shut down for some hours until it can reset. As temperatures rise and residents and visitors want to use the park this has caused some aggravation.

Coun. Rick Bonnett voiced his concern to Wes Amendt, director of community services, during the Aug. 13 council meeting.

“Is there somebody from this company that’s going to come out? Obviously

this is still under warranty and they need to be able to make sure that our people know how to be able to rectify this,” he stated.

He saw comments on Facebook from concerned residents and believes people want to enjoy the amenity. Bonnett feels representatives from Vortex, the company that manufactures the equipment, should come to Ponoka to troubleshoot the issue.

Amendt told council what issues staff have been dealing with.

“We’ve had some continuous issues with a chemical sensor and the system that regulates the chemicals at the splash park,” said Amendt. “We’ve been in contact with the manufacturer and the company Vortex.”

“It’s frustrating to no end,” he added.

Before the splash park opened, Doucette came to Ponoka and trained Amendt, Olson and Tamara Huzar, recreation clerk, for two days on the system and the company also supplied manuals on the operation of the park.

Carpenter was unable to speak to the issues the town is having because Doucette was away at time of the interview.

The park is still under warranty though; depending on the equipment, warranty is for two or five years.

Bullet found lodged in pickup after shots fired on Hwy 2

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye A bullet narrowly missed a 57-yearold driver on Highway 2 last weekend.

The Calgary man was southbound on Highway 2 near Matejka Road in a rented grey Ford F150 when he heard a loud bang on the driver’s side door Aug. 17 at 6:30 p.m.

He pulled over to investigate and located a large calibre bullet lodged in the frame of the driver’s side door just behind the driver’s seat. Police were notified and they began searching homes in the area but nothing was found. The matter is still under investigation but police don’t believe there was foul play in the incident. There were also three passengers in the truck.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.

Court appearance for speedster Officers stopped a 2010 Hyundai after speeding at 187 km/h on Highway 2 near Ponoka. A 17-year-old boy from Blackfalds faces a mandatory court appearance as he was travelling more than 50 km/h over the posted speed limit.

Mischief in cornfield Police are looking at a second incident involving damage done to a cornfield. Sometime between Aug. 14

and 16 a vehicle entered a cornfield on Range Road 263A near Highway 53 and caused damage to an area of the field.

Some damage to the vehicle was caused and a bumper and fog light were found at the scene. The matter is under investigation.

Commercial trucker arrested A 30-year-old Ponoka big-rig trucker is facing charges of impaired driving and dangerous operation of a vehicle after providing two blood-alcohol samples of .16.

The man was driving a Ponokabased commercial vehicle Aug. 18 at 6:30 p.m. southbound on Highway 2 and then exited eastbound on Secondary Highway 611. The Ponoka Integrated Traffic Unit received a call from a concerned motorist who was following the truck.

They reported the vehicle was swerving in and out of both ditches and then the man eventually stopped in the middle of the eastbound lanes, stepped out of the cab and urinated in the middle of the road. The witnesses then approached the man and said he should not be driving.

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Millions of viewers worldwide are going to tune into their television sets to watch the Tour of Alberta bike race.

And Ponoka is on the route.

The full entourage is expected to race through the town Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. and 120 international racers with 40 support vehicles are going to make their way along 50th Street, says Wes Amendt, director of community services.

Police and town staff have been preparing for road closures along the route, which takes racers on the second stage of the five-stage tour. Bikers will travel 185 kilometres from Devon to Red Deer, passing through Ponoka.

The biggest concern on the day of the tour is traffic control and organizers are seeking 40 to 50 volunteers to help with set up and clean up. Amendt received the request last week.

Organizers expect 40 to 60 million viewers around the world and approximately five million from Canada. The race will be live on Sportsnet with highlights played throughout the day.

Amendt hopes to take advantage of the publicity. “We’ll try to get some signage out there.”

“We encourage people to line the streets. Come and watch,” he added.

There was no budget set for this but town workers have been fixing up potholes along the route and street

sweepers will be clearing the roads the morning of the race. “Their main concern is that the roads are clear,” said Amendt.

Letters have been hand delivered to residents and businesses along the route and Sarah Olson, economic development officer, looks forward to the potential publicity of the event.

“There’s an opportunity for people from the surrounding areas to come into our town.”

That and the international coverage is something she looks forward too. The letter she provided businesses owners encourages them to consider ways they can promote their shops.

“It’s a community pride thing,” said Olson.

Volunteers will receive a gift from the town for their efforts and T-shirts will be supplied to those who can help out. “We’re putting together a little care package/courtesy bag for the volunteers.”

Some information has come last minute to the town as organizers had to re-assess routes in southern Alberta, which has left them behind on some planning. The race route will take bikers south on Highway 2A, east on 57 Avenue and then south on 50 Street through downtown. Bikers will then head east on Highway 53 and south past the Centennial Centre for Mental Health and Brain Injury.

Secondary Highway 815 and make their way to Red Deer.

Agreements and material will need to be acquired before the county can start.

Rain affecting road construction Heavy rains over the summer have slowed down Ponoka County’s road upgrades.

The report came from Schwingel, during a meeting Aug. 12. “It’s getting rained out everywhere.”

Approximately 30 miles have been planned for this season but Schwingel believes about 10 per cent is actually complete. However gravel work is 90 per cent complete and quite a bit of dust abatement with calcium chloride has been conducted.

The county is also in discussion with a gravel pit north of the county’s Rimbey shop, says Cutforth. They hope to negotiate a price that may save the county money in the future.

“We’re going to save at least $2 a tonne with trucking in that location,” said Cutforth.

There is some concern over the quality of gravel, so Schwingel intends to try out the gravel with smaller projects before making a commitment. He feels there may be too much sand and clay.

Despite Amendt’s statement the town has contacted the company, Carpenter is only aware of the replacement of the sensor. It is possible Doucette handled calls from Olson but did not log them.

Amendt’s frustration stems from the continuous issues at the park. “I understand the frustration of the community but it’s out of our control.”

“To say the least it’s a very positive addition when it’s working,” he added.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) shut down the park July 26 over issues with water test samples.

A public meeting has been set for Sept. 10 to give people a chance to voice their opinions on the Town of Ponoka’s Municipal Development Plan (MDP. The date was set after council gave first reading to the plan Aug. 13.

Planning consultant Bob Riddett helped finalize the draft and suggested after hearing comments from the public, council could then pass second and third reading – making the bylaw binding – the same day.

Amendments after the hearing can be made before

passing the plan, he added.

Some changes to the draft from the recent open house explain the need for manufactured housing rentals and subdivisions.

“That’s something that I don’t think was in the 1997 document. So if you want to keep affordable housing that’s one way of doing it,” explained Riddett.

Secondary suites are also becoming more common in municipalities. “It’s a good idea to allow them because they’re going to happen anyway.”

If those suites are legal then the town can properly assess the suites for taxation and issue the proper permits.

County looks at potential of Highway 2 corridor development

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Future commercial development in the Highway 2 corridor is inevitable and Ponoka County wants to be ready for it.

Consulting planner Bob Riddett presented a draft of proposed policies for the county Aug. 12 for five intersections: Secondary Highway 605 intersection north of the Lacombe County line, Matejka Road, Highway 53, Menaik Road and Secondary Highway 611 south of the County of Wetaskiwin border.

“You can be looking at commercial and industrial uses here,” said Riddett.

His report shows traffic in the corridor has steadily increased to 26,100 vehicles a day in 2012 compared to 18,880 per day in 2003. Industrial businesses could benefit from being close to the highway with exposure and no seasonal road bans.

Development in the corridor must meet provincial requirements such as proximity to oil and gas operations, waste disposal and sewer lagoons.

“Traffic of course is going to be the big issue here,” explained Riddett.

Cost to developers is going to be high to upgrade roads and intersections, and engineers will have to ensure proper construction. The county will also have to test for water in these locations but Riddett does not think there are any issues with water.

“The real question is, is this going to be paid for

the taxpayers as a general benefit or is it going to be built by the developer of these individual sites?”

Riddett asked.

“We do it on a tax invoice basis,” replied CAO Charlie Cutforth.

“Frankly the taxes that are generated by those businesses will pay for that pavement within 10 years,” he added. “We always thought they should get something for the taxes they’ve been paying because they pay plenty.”

Protecting the right to farm is an important factor in the draft document. If there are conflicts with other land uses, a farmer has the right to continue cultivating the land as long as they wish. Industrial and commercial development are secondary in this case. “All the land would retain its agricultural zoning until the owner did an area structure plan that was acceptable to yourselves and transportation and to the neighbours” Zoning and development would be next.

Riddett designed an imaginary layout of what development could look like at one of these intersections. He gives allowance for businesses that would benefit from having highway frontage, regular industrial area and areas for unattractive industries such as a scrap yard or a kennel. He suggests trees in the area would make the land more presentable.

The proposal also allows for a residential mixed use. Riddett used an extract from Camrose County’s land use bylaw allowing large lot single housing and secondary use such as small workshops and the storage of goods.

“We’ve got quite a lot of them in the county,” said Cutforth.

He asked for clarification on the bylaw as the county deals with mixed residential use. Cutforth wanted council to know how they could manage mixed use without compromising the aesthetics of a property.

“It really looks residential when you look down the road, and I think that’s the test,” said Riddett.

In cases of potential abuse where the land looks more like an industrial yard there are ways the development officer can work with landowners. “We can tighten the rules slightly.”

Permitted uses are new homes, home offices, public parks and recreation and utility structures servicing the area. There are discretionary uses for light industrial such as small workshops and the storage of goods and vehicles. Machinery, equipment and extensive agriculture are also considered discretionary.

The uses must be secondary to the main residential lot. “I think the guidance for the development officer is there,” said Riddett.

Reeve Gord Svenningsen asked what Lacombe County plans for Secondary Highway 605. Riddett said Lacombe County is looking at recreational residential area. He suggests the county would need to be more strict with screening as development should not interfere with Wolf Creek Golf Course Subway Fresh and Lacombe County.

Council decided to Try Our wait for a response from Alberta Transportation before hosting an open house for landowners.

Riddett will send the draft to the department as an unofficial draft to see how the document aligns with the province’s plans.

Gardener develops love of plants into 15-year-old business

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye Gardener Connie Bossart has been taking her love of planting and creating a business out of it.

Bossart owns Connie’s Greenhouse northwest of Ponoka and found a way to get rid of her winter blues by starting her own garden 15 years ago. She then started selling plants because she wanted to meet people.

Originally from Switzerland, Bossart found herself wishing for the springtime she was used to back home. The long Alberta winter took its toll on her and she enlisted her husband to build her a greenhouse. “I always liked gardening but I never thought to have a greenhouse.”

With the greenhouse came earlier planting and Bossart found herself right at home among the soil and plants. She specializes in tomato plants and hanging

“I always liked gardening but I never thought to have a greenhouse,” Connie Bossart baskets but also sells flowers and fruit trees. Now out of stock for the season, Bossart looks forward to next year. The work is not easy but there is some gratification in being able to grow her plants.

She advises growing tomatoes in a warm environment such as a greenhouse and using enough water to keep them growing.

“I like to deal with the customers…I like to make the customers happy,” she said.

Making money is important to her but finding the right plants for her customers is more enjoyable. Her love of plants has done her well too; Bossart won first place

in rural landscaping — under three years, at the recent Ponoka Agricultural Society’s bench show.

Working in the dirt is important and Bossart encouraged her children to also have their own gardens. She feels the activity builds up children’s immunity and gets them involved in healthy activities.

“For the kids it’s actually good. They learn to work with the dirt,” she said.

Seeing the results of the hard planting work is another benefit.

For anyone looking to develop their own gardens Bossart advises starting small and giving the plants enough room to grow, especially squash as they need a lot of earth. In her personal garden, she uses only manure fertilizer every two years and does not use any other fertilizer or pesticides. She does however maintain the garden to ensure there are no weeds.

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye To some people donkeys and mules are stubborn and untrainable but to others they are smarter and hardier than horses.

The 24th annual Tees Longears Days was held to give lovers of the animals a chance to have some fun and also learn a thing or two about showing their animals. Attendees could tell they were in for a fun day as some participants had shirts that stated, “Mules, the original hybrid.”

Despite the lighthearted atmosphere, Russ Shandro, president of the Alberta Donkey and Mule Club has been working with his board to educate club members on how to work with the animals and “to educate the people in the husbandry” of donkeys and mules.

The last two years the club has hosted more education seminars than before because its members have requested them. Their plan appears to be working, some members have been competing at horse shows.

“We’re meeting the requirements of the active membership,” said Shandro.

“Now they’re getting into a higher level where they’re competing against horses,” he added.

Members are doing so well they had some cancellations from participants as they were heading to horse shows over the weekend. Shandro is

not worried about the club though, he sees this next step as a strong selling point for them. “We want to see more people get to a higher level of competition.”

Now the board is looking at other classes for members.

“We’re re-tooling now to have a selection of education,” he said.

He is seeing mules getting more into show jumping and driving competitions and the board is responding with a trick training class in October. “For donkeys and mules, yes, you have to approach training differently.”

A well behaved mule is a sign the animal was trained well and Shandro enjoys seeing growth in that area. The five-member board oversees the concerns of 60 members and he is also pleased to have younger riders. Eight teenagers are learning the ropes of mules while they also learn their horse riding skills.

“It’s neat to see them participate with their horses and they’ve picked up mules too,” he said.

Membership ages range from 11 to 79 years old and Shandro’s goal is to continue on with plans past president, Bob Leggette set out.

Next year is the 25th anniversary of the club and Longears Days and organizers are already working on bringing musical acts to weekend.

Her family still lives in Ponoka but Fofanah, 20, moved to Edmonton a few years ago to develop her skills. “I just wanted to pursue track a lot more seriously.”

Most recently she competed in the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, Que. Aug. 2 to 17 and earned herself gold in the 100-metre race, silver in the 200-metre and silver in the 4x100-metre relay.

Her goal for the Summer Games was to earn as many points as possible for her team and keep her number 1 seed.

Before any race she stays calm but the Summer Games brought a higher level of competition and spectators, which caused her some worry. Also the pressure of winning gold Aug. 15 in the 100-metre race put the pressure on her. Despite these concerns, Fofanah won silver in the 200-metre race and help her team get silver.

“Ontario is always up there…They’re the ones you have to beat,” she explained.

The other challenge at these races was a strong headwind; everyone’s times were slower than normal, said Fofanah. “Your legs were pretty much dead by the end of the race.”

most likely stay in Alberta for a break and then travel back to the United States to study and train at North Arizona University where she intends to take advantage of her athletic scholarship with the school.

She trains about three hours a day with two hours on the track and one hour in the weight room to develop her strength and speed. “It’s all about strength and explosiveness.”

Fofanah thanked her supporters in Edmonton and Ponoka.

Alberta finished fourth in medal standings with 118. Third was British Columbia with 122, second was Quebec with 172 and first was Ontario with 213.

Lacrosse siblings return with medals from tournaments

By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye The last 10 years for Riley Workman have been a whirlwind of lacrosse and hockey and this year his hard work paid off.

Workman, 16, was invited to represent Canada in the United States Box Lacrosse Nationals in California Aug. 1 to 3. He joined the Mavericks, a midget team coached by Andrew McBride, who plays for Calgary Roughneck and vied for top spot in the tournament. Their dedication paid off with a gold medal for the team against Cali-LAX Allstars 6-5 in a shootout.

Workman has been playing with Lacoka Lacrosse for the last 10 years and loves the sport even more than hockey. The team’s goal coming into the tournament was to win but Workman knew the competition was fierce.

“They’re all really good teams.”

Taking on the players was somewhat intimidating as many of them were larger than the Mavericks.

“They’re big boys,” explained Workman.

But training from McBride helped them pull through some tough games to be undefeated. Workman helped the team in playoffs that would take them to the gold medal game and he believes he scored a goal in every game

he played. For him the best part of the sport is when things get heated.

“When games get tough in that final five minutes, I love that,” he stated.

The sport runs in the family, Workman’s sister Shae, 13, competed in the female National Box Lacrosse Championships in Halifax, N.S. July 23 to 28.

She has been playing lacrosse for the last two years and decided to try out for the national team and made it.

“I was really nervous.”

Team Alberta won bronze in the competition.

“But we made Alberta history. We were the first (Alberta) team to ever beat Ontario,” she stated.

British Columbia was the toughest team to beat to get them into the gold medal game but the team proved too strong for the young Alberta team, she said. “British Columbia games were the most important. We could beat Ontario but it only really mattered if we beat B.C. too.”

Getting into lacrosse seemed a natural choice for Shae, who did not enjoy sports except for swimming. Her brother helped get her into lacrosse.

“I tried a bunch of other sports but I didn’t really like them.”

“She kind of decided she wanted to get into sports,” explained her brother.

The rules at nationals were slightly different than what she is used to and periods lasted 17 minutes rather than 20.

“My favourite game was when we beat On-

tario. There was many game changing moments in that game,” said Shae.

“I’m going to continue. I like the feeling when you score…You do it for your team. Hitting’s fun too,” she added.

Her brother plans to continue with the sport as well. He has aged out of midgets and will try out for the junior team next season. Workman wants to advance as far as possible in the sport.

Council of the Town of Ponoka proposes to adopt a new Municipal Development Plan (MDP) to replace a document adopted in 1997. The plan sets out goals, objectives and high level policies to guide urban growth decisions for the next decade.

A new coach has been hired to put the Ponoka Stampeders junior B hockey team on a winning streak.

Mark Dobler, 45, of Airdrie, saw an ad on the Hockey Alberta website that the Stampeders were looking for a new coach. He accepted the position in June and has been spending two to three hours per day planning out his training year. “Kind of like a teacher putting together a yearly curriculum…It just makes it easier for everybody.”

Travel to and from games won’t to be an issue either, — Dobler has already purchased new studded tires to deal with icy roads.

“The 1½ hours going to the rink gives me a chance to think,” he added.

He has spent 41 years of his life in hockey rinks — whether playing professionally in Europe or coaching the Airdrie Thunder in the ’90s, Dobler loves the sport. He remembers watching the Stampeders last season and enjoys the challenge of bringing the team up after a record of 1-1-36.

“I saw the talent was there,” said Dobler.

His goal this season is to get back to the basics of the sport and keep things simple.

“There’s a lot of things in the game of hockey that coaches try to make complicated.”

Keeping the centre ice closed will lessen their opponents chance to score as well.

Dobler does not want to miss opportunities to score either. He feels there were missed chances last year and he hopes to rectify that.

He hopes to bring his experience coaching junior B and midget AAA to the table

and get players winning. Dobler feels if he is confident then his players will be too.

“Then we trust each other.

We’re all on the same page,” he stated.

D o b l e r signed with the Stampeders for one year but if things go well he new intends to stay. Stampeders head coach Mark He feels the fact that the team has Dobler their own dressing room and the rink is in decent shape is a benefit to the organization.

“A lot of it is changing the culture in the dressing room but it also is changing the culture in the organization,” he said.

If the team does well, more people come to games.

Tryouts are Sept. 7 and 8 at the Ponoka Culture and Recreation Complex and Dobler intends to start training immediately.

“For me to get ahead of some of these other teams I have to start teaching my systems, my plans right away,” he explained.
