The Town of Lake Cowichan expects to hear in a few days whether the $3 million South Shore Road project is wide enough to include planned medians.

His penchant for sport led him to spend 10 years — from 1995 through 2005 — competing with the Canadian Para-Alpine ski team and three seasons — from 2003 to 2005 — competing as a member of the national adaptive waterski team.

Tuck retired in 2005 when fatherhood — his daughters, aged six and nine, will cheer him on from home when he competes at the WDWC, he said — and running his own business proved to be too taxing.

He came out of retirement briefly in 2008 to set a new national record at Waterski Nationals, but he turned down an invitation to rejoin the team, leaving him free to focus on work and family.

Tuck owns and operates his own trucking and excavating company, an endeavor that saw him working seven days a week for extended periods of time, he said. His workload has since eased up and he’s now able to “work less and ski more,” he added.

Last summer, Shorsky — a neighbour and regular waterski partner — encouraged him to return to competition, Tuck said, and by midwinter, he “got serious.”

“Shawn and I have been skiing regularly all winter long out on Cowichan Lake,” Tuck added. “It’s cold, but it’s not unbearable.”

Tuck skied through spring and into summer, swapping his drysuit for a wetsuit as the mercury creeped up to tolerable levels.

Logging countless hours on the lake over the last year led to tangible improvements in Tuck’s skiing, he said, and he’s carved training runs on Cowichan Lake that would best his performance in Calgary.

Before leaving to Milan, Italy — host city to the 2013 WDWC — Tuck said: “If I can ski what I know I’m capable of, I should do alright.”

Tuck will train in Milan from Aug. 22-25, Shorsky said. Preliminaries begin Aug. 29 and finals are scheduled for Sept. 1.

Shorsky confirmed that Tuck has “an exceptionally good chance of finishing on the podium” in Milan.

Tuck’s an “inspirational” athlete, Shorsky added, “and it’s hard to have a bad day when you’ve got somebody like him around. To watch what he does on the water is remarkable.”

The death of 78-year-old Michael Lawler in a community park Aug. 13 resulted from natural causes, the BC Coroners Service states.

Barb McLintock with the BCCS’s Victoria office stated the BCCS “waived its interest” in investigating Lawler’s sudden death due to the fact that “it was a completely natural death.”

A Lake Cowichan resident, Lawler had apparently simply been out for his morning walk before another local resident discovered him lying on the ground in Riverside Park near the Duck Pond, and contacted emergency services.

The BCCS conferred with Lawler’s physician following his death and it was agreed that, given his medical history, his death was due to natural causes, McLintock said.

The physician in question then signed the medical certificate, effectively ending the BCCS’s involvement in the case, McLintock added.

The Lake Cowichan RCMP stated that foul play was not suspected and police involvement in the case is completed, Sgt. Wes Olsen said.

“His stories will be missed by his sons, brothers, grandkids, nieces and nephews,” an obituary notice sent to the Gazette reads, before advising readers they can forward their condolences to Lawler’s friends and family via email at dmlawler@shaw.ca.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and TB Vets.

“An open house will be announced at a later date,” the notice concludes.

Lake Cowichan RCMP reports the local Scouts Canada camp was vandalized last week.

In a press release dated Aug. 16, detachment commander Sgt. Wes Olsen reported the Woodland Scout and Guide Camp, located on the north arm of Cowichan Lake, was ransacked “between 3 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.” on Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Tables and chairs in the camp shelter were overturned, bottles were smashed, litter was tossed about the grounds, and a trailer located onsite was broken into, had its windows broken and “liquids” spilled inside.

Lake Cowichan RCMP is calling on members of the public to assist in the investigation of what Olsen called “a senseless act of vandalism,” adding the camp in question is “for the benefit of youth learning life skills and experiencing nature in a camp setting.”

Olsen said waterfront homes located along Creekside Drive and Miracle Way have a clear line of sight to Woodland Scout Camp across the waters of the north arm of the lake.

Olsen advised anyone with information about this crime to contact the Lake Cowichan RCMP at 250-749-6668 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Councils extras not necessary Dear Editor

South Shore Road is part of Highway 18 and therefore under the jurisdiction of the British Columbia Highway Department. South Shore Road would have been paved regardless of any action by the town of Lake Cowichan.

I am a opponent of traffic circles in general, they are too darn expensive.

Most of them are not needed when taking accident frequency and/or traffic volume into account. A signal light with sensors, for the left turn from North Shore Road, would have been a lot cheaper and easier to install and without the month long traffic tie-ups.

Please don’t give me the lame excuse of cars idling at the light would increase carbon emission. The town can easily lower its carbon footprint by eliminating about 40 per cent of the stop signs in town and replacing another 40 per cent with yield signs.

However, with the South Shore and North Shore Road circle approaching completion, I can live with it.

At least it is of some use.

What really irks me are the other, totally unnecessary, road works. I am talking here about bulges at the sidewalks to narrow the road and landscaped islands.

I was informed, at last year’s town meeting in November, that the cost of the circle would be approximately $650,000, shared 50/50 with the highways department.

In addition, the town would receive $100,000 from ICBC. Therefore, the total cost to the town could have been $225,000 if it had not been for the other, so-called improvements.

As I understand it, the cost of everything, including the town’s share of the circle, stands at $1.3 million.

In other words, $1.075 million was wasted on unnecessary roadworks. Moneys that could have been used to offset the cost of the secondary water treatment ordered by the Government of British Columbia.

But no, it is so much easier to increase the taxes to pay for that.

I tried to get a petition against the circle going last year, but was informed by council that I only had three days to collect signatures. We collected 28.

Can council please explain to me why I was only given three days when the tender for construction was not issued until months later?

Were they afraid that the petition might succeed in gathering sufficient signatures thus depriving them of their legacy?

Idea of paying a company to be good citizen wrong in principle Dear Editor

I am sending this letter to register my total opposition to the proposed funding arrangement for the Youbou truck wash. I find objectionable the principle that funds from any Cowichan Valley Regional District source should be offered as an inducement to encourage a private company to be duly diligent in the execution of its business practices.

This objection is amplified by the recent news story identifying this as the “best financial year yet” for TimberWest. Truly a $5,000 “buy-in” from Youbou flies in the face of TimberWest being a “good corporate citizen” in this case. I would suggest that it will receive

far in excess of $5,000 worth of good will and good press if they unilaterally offered to install the truck wash at no cost to Youbonians or the CVRD. No one in Youbou denies that the facility is desperately needed in our community. I feel those like myself, that oppose the funding are standing on principle and oppose the funding arrangement only, not the actual project.

The cash in the lake and river account is there because of people dedicated to the direct long-term health of our lake and river. To throw $5,000 from this important and limited fund to TimberWest in their most profitable year shows me a disrespect for the long term health of our most precious gift, our lake.

The CVRD is now asking for public input with regard to the proposed partnering agreement with Timberwest.

It is considering using $5,000 of the Area I Nature and Habitat Fund a to assist Timberwest in the installation of a truck wash.

Five thousand dollars is neither a lot of money for the CVRD nor for Timberwest.

So the amount is not really the

issue here.

Why does TimberWest insist on this relatively small contribution by the CVRD? Road cleaning and maintenance are the responsibility of the Department of Highways. Is this setting a precedent? Is there a justification for spending $ 5,000 of public money to pay for a truck wash?

The mess on Youbou Road was not caused by residents of Youbou. The dust and mud are being deposited by log trucks coming off the private logging road onto the residential road.

Trucks used to be washed at the sawmill before entering the town. However, when the mill closed, no arrangement was made by TimberWest to find an alternative for washing off the trucks before they entered public roads.

So, not only has Youbou suffered as a result of the mill closure, but with log truck traffic increasing substantially since, Youbou residents have been subjected to an unacceptable level of dust in their homes. Now, after many years of putting up with the immense dust and mud, Timberwest has agreed to the installation of a truck wash on their land. But we will have to pay $ 5,000.

In the Lower Mainland or in the Victoria area a problem of this magnitude would never have taken place. There, even the smallest contractors are held responsible for the mess they create on public roads. There are stiff penalties if they ignore their responsibilities.

In Youbou, this mess has been going on for years, and now we are supposed to help pay for the cleanup with public funds.

This is not right. It is not the amount. It is the principle.

The mess in Youbou was caused by the forest industry, and the forest industry should be cleaning it up. Youbou residents have been given the short end of the stick by the forest industry.

We should not now also be forced to help pay for cleaning up their mess.

If you share my concerns, please write to the CVRD, Attn.

The deadline to submit is Sept. 2, 2013.

At one time they were a staple in nearly every home.

Some were as finely crafted as the highest quality furniture, built from mahogany or oak with inlays of ivory and polished brass. Others were more utilitarian, made up of just a plain wooden box with a few simple dials.

But from the mid 1920s to the '50s, they were the focal point for many a family, providing news, entertainment and a link to the world at large. Before the iPad, internet, DVD player or television, there was the radio.

At the Mesachie Lake home of Pat and Kelley Heslop, there are enough antique radios to keep a whole neighbourhood enlightened and entertained.

“I’m up to around 60 now,” said Pat of his antique radio collection. “Most of them I’ve gotten working. What’s the point of having a radio if you can’t listen to it?”

Pat began collecting only about three years ago but has a wide variety of radios ranging in age from the early 20s to the mid 50s.

He comes by his passion honestly. His father, who worked at Queale Electronics, often brought projects home with him to work on.

“Dad always had something he was tinkering with, so that’s probably where I picked it up. I was always tearing apart old TVs and my son’s got it bad; he revamped a broken electric fly swatter into a mini-taser thing,” he said.

Pat has found most the pieces in his collection through perusing websites like UsedVictoria or frequenting garage sales and second-hand stores. Since joining the Victoria Radio Club and connecting with other collectors, he has a network of suppliers for the tubes, resistors and capacitors crucial to getting a 80-odd-year-old machine up and

running.

“Eighty per cent of the time, the problem is capacitors and online you can find just about anything that you need,” he said.

The know-how to tackle restoring and reconditioning some of these old gems is pretty much a self-taught skill in Pat’s case. Fellow club members are great resources for information and parts on projects of all types.

He has no elaborate humidity-controlled storage facilities for his finished radios or works in progress, just a crowded “man-cave” in his house and a garage out back.

Some of the larger and more striking pieces reside in the front-room and hallway of the house that he and Kelley share. The collection keeps expanding, but Pat is gradually getting more selective in his choices for purchase and restoration.

“I believe it’s time that Pat had an intervention,” joked wife, Kelley. “We recently drove all the way to Winnipeg to pick up two radios that he’d found on UsedWinnipeg. The man has a serious problem!”

Pat employs a broadcaster that allows him to transmit FM radio, or CDs and pick them up on the AM station of his choice on his many working radios. That’s because AM reception in his area is virtually non-existent.

“Most of the radios are AM or AM and shortwave,” he said.

Another sound purchase is a 1911-1914 Edison diamond disc gramophone that occupies a prominent spot in the living room. The early player uses an actual diamond stylus and was designed to play strictly Edison diamond discs. Any attempt to play a regular 78 RPM record on this machine would, in Pat’s words, “tear the disc to pieces.”

An appreciation of the quality, craftsmanship and innovative designs in these old gems is one of the things that keeps Heslop happily tinkering away with his latest projects.

“You can spend horrendous amounts of money on these things if you want to but I don’t” said Pat. “I just do it, because it keeps me out of trouble.”

This year’s Cowichan River clean-up saw fewer volunteers take part.

But any disappointment on that end was quickly countered by the fact there was less garbage to clean up.

Cowichan Lake and River Stewardship Society president Gerald Thom said this year’s two-day clean-up resulted in about 90 per cent of the river being cleaned.

Day one saw the top portion of the river swept, from the weir to Sandy Pools in Sahtlam.

Day two took the volunteers from Sandy Pools to the Cowichan estuary.

This year one tonne of garbage was cleaned from the river, while less than 4,000 recyclable articles were removed.

Thom described this as a large improvement from last year’s 1.7 tonnes of garbage and just over 4,000 recyclables.

“Beer cans, and broken inflatable rubber rafts are probably the most common items,” said Thom.

“I think people are becoming more responsible, and I think the river clean-up events help raise the awareness.”

He said — like in just about any other similar situation — it is usually a small number of people who are in the wrong.

“Two to five per cent of the population just don’t give a damn,” said Thom. “We will probably be cleaning up after them until the earth end.”

Thom believes that they are making a great impact on the river, and that the amount of old garbage being removed each year is less, and less. The greatest find this year was a heritage rowboat, which could not be removed because it was filled with sand.

“In past years we have had more interesting items,” says Thom. “I think we are slowly getting most of the interesting stuff out of the river.”

Once again, the members of Sundown Diving Club in Nanaimo joined the volunteers, and scoured the river bottom for items.

The Cowichan Valley Regional District provided insurance for the volunteers, and allows the river cleanup garbage to be dumped for free. BRI Security provides radios so the river clean up team could communicate with one another.

Whether you play music, sing, dance, paint, act or read, there’s a home for you at Studio 261 in Lake Cowichan.

Owner Judith Quinlan has created a studio for area artists at 261 Southshore Road that offers rehearsal, workshop, and gallery spaces, space for small group performances, recitals and meeting space and also room for music lessons.

The studio is available to artists at no cost if no admission is charged. If admission is charged, a fee of 10 per cent of the proceeds is charged.

“Basically, if it’s available the day they want it, any arts group or artist, they can use the space for free,” said Quinlan, noting as an example, a photographer did a shoot inside the studio when bad weather spoiled a big outdoor shoot.

“If someone uses the space and is doing a performance, I ask for 10 per cent of the ticket proceeds. Teachers just pay a small percentage of what they charge. It’s kind of nice for people to get started on something because they don’t have to pay space rental until they take off.”

Quinlan, who lives in Honeymoon Bay, took over the studio in March 2012. It was already an existing studio, and the previous owner taught singing lessons. Quinlan started teaching piano there in the fall of 2011, and when the owner moved away, she took it over and began building up Studio 261.

There are currently four music teachers in the studio — Quinlan, who teaches piano and some voice lessons; Darryl Alsbrook, who offers guitar lessons; Rhonda Vertefeuille, who teaches voice lessons; and Andrea Starr, who offers piano lessons.

Mary Lowther, who teaches clarinet and flute out of her home in Mesachie Lake, is also available to come and teach lessons in the studio.

In the past 16 months, Studio 261 has become much more than a teaching space. The Rivernotes Choir has been rehearsing at Studio 261 once a week, and the studio is home to the Cowichan Theatre Readers’ Group meetings. The group gathers and reads excerpts of plays out loud, and Quinlan says they do a bit of improv as well.

“We’re like a book club for theatre buffs,” she said. “That was very successful, and we’ve committed to doing that again in the fall.”

Groups like the Kaatza Lakeside Players have used the space as well, and there have been Friday evening open mike coffeehouses and movie screenings in the studio.

Quinlan is hoping to begin offering music theory classes this fall and to expand on the studio’s offerings, and she would love to see the open mike nights continue.

She hopes that Studio 261 can become an artistic hub in Lake Cowichan.

“I would like to see more people using it and more crossfertilization of the arts,” she said. “I think it would be really neat to have some of the visual artists in town do a one-day art show while we have background music. I’ve love to see the coffeehouse

idea developed more so it becomes a space where people with any artistic interest can be part of it.”

Quinlan has been teaching piano for more than 10 years.

When she was young, she took piano lessons up to Grade 7.

She stopped but got back into playing when she was in her 40s and living in Burns Lake. Quinlan’s partner, a music teacher from Berlin, moved in and brought a grand piano. This prompted Quinlan to start taking lessons again.

“It was really because I lived 100 kilometres in the bush outside Burns Lake at the end of the power line in a big log house with a grand piano,” she laughed. “We had chickens and a wood stove and in the middle of the living room, this honking big piano, so, I mean, I had to learn to play it.”

Quinlan and her partner ended up opening a music studio in Burns Lake, growing to about 70 to 80 students.

“I enjoyed that,” said Quinlan. “I enjoyed having other teachers to work with and planning concerts and entering our kids in the provincials and festivals of performing arts.”

Students and staff from Studio 261 showcased their skills June 9 at the studio.Nine students and four teachers performed 25 pieces.

“For the teachers, this is the first time we’ve done a student recital, and we’re really excited because we get to collaborate,” said Quinlan, noting all the piano teachers will have a chance to accompany Vertefeuille. “I really believe the more you can collaborate on music, the more you learn and the more fun it is. I’m hoping in the future we’ll be able to see students accompanying each other, like the piano students accompanying the voice students.”

Music lessons at Studio 261 tapered off for the summer as teachers took breaks, but the space continues to be available for use.

The Gords are carving out a reputation co-fronting their own band after years of work with noted Canadian acts like k.d. lang and Ian Tyson.

The three musicians who make up the band The Gords have much more in common than their names.

Gord Maxwell, Gord Matthews and Gordon Lee Worden are veteran sidemen/session musicians with a number of noted Canadian acts.

They have joined forces as an adult contemporary/soft rock trio

combining a natural vocal harmony blend, two standout guitar players and a driving bass player.

The Gords released their first CD, Pick, which features two songs written by Tyson, in April 2012. One of their songs, Old Dreams Die Hard, was No. 1 on the Internet roots/Americana charts for three months straight last summer.

Worden says that when The Gords perform, they play their original songs and also revisit their pasts, playing a bit of kd lang, One Horse Blue, Ian Tyson and The Great Wide Open. They’ve brought drummer Chris Aiken along for this tour that brings them to Lake Cowichan this month.

Worden says it’s exciting for them all to perform their own songs as a band after playing as sidemen for so many years.

“One of our last gigs was in Edmonton, and we hadn’t really sold a lot of pre-sale tickets, so we didn’t think many people would show up,” he said. “We showed up, and the place was full, they knew all the words, and they were listening with their eyes closed. It’s really rewarding that people like The Gords so much because we’ve all made really long careers of playing other people’s music.”

Worden, a Nanaimo native, is excited for a chance to come to Lake Cowichan for the first time and to play so close to family and friends when The Gords perform at Jake’s at the Lake on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Before coming to Lake Cowichan, The Gords will be on the Global TV morning show Tuesday, Aug. 27.

With an all-new executive and president Karen Hoskins, the baseball association in Lake Cowichan is looking to revamp the league.

And the opening pitch will be new batting cages at the little league fields.

Construction on the new cages is set to begin shortly. A permit has been issued, and an agreement between the baseball association and the town of Lake Cowichan has been signed, says Ronnie Gill, director of finance for Lake Cowichan.

“Anything that promotes activities for you, is exciting for the town,” said Gill.

The town of Lake Cowichan has given $10,200 to the association to help with the costs. This amount should cover the cost of all the materials needed for the project. Volunteers will be contributing the labour.

“The volunteers are just kind of winding down on

other projects, then they’ll get at it,” said Hoskins.

“Our deadline is the end of November, but I think we’ll be done before that.”

Once the batting cages are completed, the baseball association would like to get the town’s fields brought up to code, so they can be competitive with the Duncan, Nanaimo, and Victoria teams.

“Eventually I would like to have our fields looking like the ones in Duncan,” said Hoskins.

“It’s going to take a long time because we don’t have the money, but we are going to get the idea in front of the town, and hope to get it put into the budget for next year.”

Registration for next year’s season will begin sometime in January. There will be posters put up, and advertising done, so that the community can get more involved, said Hoskins.

“We’re trying to get enrollment up, but keep the cost affordable for all families,” said Hoskins.

“With registration you’ll get your kit, a team photo, an individual photo, and to play a great season of baseball.”

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of an incredible woman.

She passed away at home with her entire family by her side.

Pat was born the eldest of seven children, born in Prince Albert, Sask. and raised in Ladder Valley, Big River, Sask. She married Jim Wall in 1959 and they had three children, Debbie, Gordie and Lori. The family moved to Lake Cowichan B.C. in 1964. In June1984 they moved to Mackenzie, B.C. where Jim died in a logging accident, October 1984.

Pat got a job in the logging camp and then in 1998 she moved back to Big River, Sask, to take care of her parents on the farm. She moved to town in 2005 to live on her own. Her home was the central meeting place. One knock on her door and you could hear her eagerly saying, “come in, come in, come in.�

Pat had six grandchildren and one great-grandson.

They were her pride and joy. A visit or a phone call always made her day. What ever you couldn’t do at home you could do at Gramma’s. You could eat what ever you wanted, drink lots of pop, smoke your candy cigarettes while scratching lottery tickets. Pat loved to laugh and joke and no one was excluded from her teasing. All kids growing up around her knew the meaning of potatoes and gravy and ice cream and every small child knew the ‘Jump in the Buggy’ song.

When ever she was asked how she was, her reply was always the same,� I am mean, miserable and bitchy.� So far from the truth. She was lovingly called the “Ole Bitch.� Pat was known to most everyone as Mom, Gramma or Auntie even though they were not related to her. She was full of life and always happy, playing games or singing funny little nursery rhymes. She was our story teller and our ‘You Are My Sunshine’ singer.

For the past 15 years Pat enjoyed her summer months at Ness Lake camping no matter what the weather. Pat enjoyed the simple things in life and could spend hours just people watching. She loved drinking coca cola, and collecting pig ornaments.

Pat’s front window not only over looked the lake but a busy sliding hill in the winter. She was always making hot chocolate or getting dry mitts for all the kids that would spend hours on her steps. We know that she is now reunited with the love of her life, Jim. Left to celebrate and carry on her memories are: son Gordie Wall and his fiancÊ Kelly Black-Long; grandson Mason Wall; granddaughter Chelsey Wall and her fiancÊ Shawn Hartshorn and their son Landen; daughter Lori Wall Lyons and grandson Cole Lyons; granddaughter Richelle Lyons; daughter Debbie Wall Williams and granddaughter Brandice Williams and grandson Chad Williams; son-in-laws Bruno Williams and Brian Lyons; and daughter-in-law Andrea Eckert Wall; brother Bob and Vivian Kennedy, sister Lois and Mervin Cooper; sister Fern and Joe Wall; sister Donna and Jim Hannam; sister Wendy and Wally Wilson; and sister Cindy and Dwayne Olson; brother-in-law Harley and Laverne Wall; sisterin-law Shirley Wall; brother-in-law Fred Wall; sister-inlaw Esther and Adam Klischuck; sister-in-law Elaine Shieve; and sister-in-law Marion Chernekoff; numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends.

ianna passed away suddenly on August 17 and she will be greatly missed by her husband John; her sons Trevor and Michael; five grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

She was born in Bralorne, B.C. Dianna met John about 45 years ago in Lake Cowichan and they built their lives together here.

Dianna adopted into her life 13 other kids and at the Black Powder Rendezvous she looked after them and showed them how to cook.

The 12th Annual Great Lake Walk and Ultramarathon is on Saturday, Sept. 21. The registration deadline — Sept. 1 — is fast approaching.

Sign- up for the 56 kilometre trek around beautiful Cowichan Lake and walk or run for the charity of your choice.

Over the next couple of weeks Mountain Man Services will place wooden benches to complete the area.

The Cowichan Lake District Chamber of Commerce has been gathering together sponsors from the community to make it happen. Corporate sponsors Denis Pilon of Mountain Man Services will donate his time and artistic licence in creating the benches, Dogwood Lumber is donating the wood required for the benches and Dave Johel of Johel Group has donated the mesh gravel, the boulders and truck and driver to place them under the tree.

Other businesses and residents have also donated to the Community Spirit Bench Project to help with the cost of the labour and commemorative plaque that will showcase their names in support of bringing this project to fruition.

Terry Fox Run

Mark your calendar to participate in the Lake Cowichan Terry Fox Run on Sunday, Sept. 15. Registration is at 9 a.m. and the run will commence at 10 a.m. in Saywell Park.

This is the third year that the Cowichan Lake Retreads Hiking Club are organizing the run. Last year there were 91 participants and they raised $1,848. Since there are approximately 6,000 people in the Cowichan Lake area, CLR would like to see more people out to make 2013 the year to beat for participation. Dig out your runners and show your appreciation to the Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research.

There is no entry fee for the run and participants go whatever distance they can — from 10 feet to 10 km. — and may choose between making a personal cash donation, a cheque payable to The Terry Fox Foundation or collecting pledges. Pledge forms are available at Cowichan Lake Recreation at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena, Lake Cowichan Country Grocer, Honeymoon Bay and Youbou Community Halls.
