Delta consistently ranks among the highest gasoline pump prices on the continent, according to statistics collected by the website gasbuddy.com.

On a North America-wide comparison of prices taken Aug. 8, all 10 of the most expensive cities were from Metro Vancouver and within the regional TransLink surtax catchment.

Industry experts agree that taxes have driven pump prices to unbearable levels in the Lower Mainland.

“The main reason is taxes,” said Michael Ervin, who heads a consulting firm for the petroleum industry. “The Lower Mainland of B.C. is the highest taxed region in North America and so it would not surprise me that municipalities within that region would score pretty high in terms of pricing North America-wide.”

Ervin said once all the taxes are stripped away, pump prices are fairly uniform across the country, notwithstanding short-term differences based on supply and demand.

The Lower Mainland has access to supply from Western Canada via Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain pipeline as well as foreign im-

That situation likely won’t change if the Keystone XL pipeline is rerouted to the east coast instead.

“That can have a tightening effect on prices, in other words fuel prices can be higher as a result of that factor,” he said, adding coastal B.C. still has access to fuel shipments via boat.

The high price of gasoline in Tsawwassen is a good reason for many drivers to brave the long border lineups and head to a gas

station in Point Roberts, where as of Monday premium gasoline was selling for $1.259 compared with $1.445 for regular here.

“I’ve noticed a consistency in Canadian drivers coming down,” said Leanne Gerber, a gas station attendant at the Texaco in Point Roberts. “We’ve always had at least 70 per cent of our customers are Canadian and have been for the last several years.”

Gerber said the gas station has been able to build its business based on reliable Canadian cross-border visits.

“It’s been a boon for us.”

Jordan Bateman, B.C.’s director

for the Canadian Taxpayer Federation, calls it the “Blaine Drain” effect.

“Generally speaking, the higher the taxes the higher the price of gas and we see this most clearly by comparing the Lower Mainland to Blaine, Washington,” he said.

Bateman said if one strips away all the taxes and converts the currency, gas prices on both sides of the border would be virtually identical.

“Or close enough that nobody would ever cross the border for gas,” he said.

In the Lower Mainland, drivers within Metro Vancouver pay a per litre surtax of 17 cents to TransLink, 6.67 cents for the carbon tax, and 30.06 cents for federal and provincial excise taxes.

Without the TransLink tax, cities outside Metro Vancouver enjoy gas prices that are close to the national average. Bateman said that means Abbotsford receives a similar economic boon as cross-border towns for drivers seeking cheaper fill-ups.

“If Delta could actually get out of TransLink and lower gas prices at their stations they may actually find a little mixed industry of people from around the Lower Mainland flocking to Delta to buy gasoline,” he said.

Although a $10 million agreement between the province, Port Metro Vancouver, the City of Richmond, and the Corporation of Delta was announced last December to dredge local channels around Ladner and Steveston, the process is being held up by environmental agencies.

Ladner wants to remove between 400,000 and 600,000 cubic

meters of silt that has collected in local channels since the federal government ceased dredging two decades ago.

But a proposal to take the silt and move it to the main channel of the Fraser River for in-river disposal is triggering the federal Species at Risk Act for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans’ Southern Resident Killer Whale program. Environment Canada is proposing the silt be transported instead to Point Grey in Vancouver, which threatens to break the $10 million dredging budget.

Fraser River but do not go as far as Point Grey, which is why Environment Canada is proposing the silt be transported there.

But Michael Owen of Ladner Reach Marina said it doesn’t make sense to block in-river disposal for environmental reasons.

“We’re talking less than a half a per cent of what naturally occurs,” he said.

Owen is concerned that further delays could harm access to Ladner’s entranceways, and Deas Slough and Ferry Reach desperately need dredging.

“The boat launching ramp at the end of Ferry Road is totally impassible,” he said, adding

during low tide it looks possible to walk to Deas Island.

Owen is concerned dredging won’t happen this year and more studies and tests conducted by Port Metro Vancouver will drain the $10 million dredging budget.

“I mean, this is insane. We can’t even dredge something that’s naturally occurring? It’s not like we’re a goddamned shipyard that’s been dumping... off the end of our pier for years.”

Racism complaint against cannery dismissed by tribunal Worker had alleged discrimination of Asian people by employer in seafood plant ❙ Adrian MacNair reporter adrian@southdeltaleader.com

The B.C. Human Rights Tribunal has dismissed allegations of racism made by a former employee of Delta Pacific Seafoods. Victor Tam, who worked for the company for six months, alleged that his supervisors made ongoing racial slurs against Chinese and generally Asian people. When he complained about it, Tam said he was fired.

Tam was hired as a night shift forklift driver in May 2011 by Delta Pacific Seafoods, a cannery with 98 full-time employees located on 60th Avenue just east of the George Massey Tunnel.

He alleged that John Barta, night shift supervisor at the cannery, made disparaging remarks about the Chinese workers, calling them slow, screaming at them to move faster, and threatening to fire them if they didn’t.

In one incident Tam alleged that Barta screamed so loudly that a temporary worker was reduced to tears. Another supervisor, general manager Don Pollard, was alleged to have screamed racial epithets at Tam, calling him a “shit disturber” and threatening to fire him.

Pollard stated in his response to the Human Rights Tribunal that he never made any comments on Tam’s ethnicity, but admits he told him that his behaviour was “disrupting and threatening.”

The respondents said that during Tam’s six-month stint they noticed serious behavioural and interpersonal issues begin to rise, resulting in terminating his employment on Jan. 31, 2012.

The company denied any racial motivation in the firing and said Tam didn’t get along with coworkers, was insubordinate and refused to follow instructions, did not follow workplace rules, was insolent and rude when speaking to others, and threatened physical violence against Barta and other employees.

Delta Pacific sought advice from the Delta Police prior to firing Tam. The company also stated that roughly 87 per cent of night shift employees are visible minorities, with 84 per cent being of Asian descent. Delta Pacific states it has a zero tolerance policy for workplace harassment and discrimination.

In her reason for dismissal, tribunal member Marlene Tyshynski said the allegations of racist incidents made by Tam provided little or no context.

As well, a letter of complaint made by Tam against Barta on Nov. 28, 2011, made no reference to racebased discrimination. Tyshynski said that given the fact the complaint would have no reasonable prospect to succeed in a Human Rights Tribunal hearing, it would be dismissed in its entirety.

Ladner family hungry for cure to rare condition ❙ Adrian MacNair reporter adrian@southdeltaleader.com

Little Ellie MacDonald plants a foot tentatively on the blue plastic slide and wobbles slightly, looking over at her parents before breaking into a mischievous grin.

She then hops on and climbs her way up while dad circles around behind her to make sure she doesn’t slide off accidentally.

The 28-month-old Ladner girl is undersized for her age, weighing about 22 pounds, but her youthful energy offers little clue as to her rare genetic condition.

When she was born four weeks premature, Ellie slept nearly 24 hours a day, was feeble, and rarely ate. It took eight weeks to diagnose her with Prader-Willi Syndrome, a chronic hunger condition which affects roughly one in 30,000 people.

It means her stomach never feels full, and if left to her own devices she would continue eating and eating until sickness, or even death.

Over the past year, many of the health issues accompanying Ellie’s condition have been addressed.

The most significant one was an ear operation that was preventing her from hearing and learning to speak.

And an on-site nurse who visits six nights a week from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. has helped save the family’s sanity.

“We’re kind of in the honeymoon phase as they call it,” says Ellie’s mom, Susanne Szabo-MacDonald.

After all the stress and worry of the previous year, Ellie’s parents can

“We can’t live in denial,” says Susanne. “We know it’s coming. But we’re trying not to stress because she’s awesome right now.”

“She can play and not run away,” Susanne chimes in.

They have a play kitchen in the backyard with pretend food, which Jason says helps to alleviate the natural anxiety she feels about food.

Although children her age can’t articulate their hunger pains, it manifests in other ways that shows their frustration.

Like most people with Prader-Willi, Ellie is developmentally delayed, requiring growth hormones to help her get bigger. Susanne wants her daughter to live as normal a life as will be possible under the circumstances.

“My main mission is to get her caught up enough to her peers that she can start preschool next year,” she says.

Ellie’s parents held a charity walk last September called One Small Step for Ellie, raising $20,000 for research. Susanne describes the generosity showed by the community as “amazing.” They are now planning a second walk on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Ladner Harbour Park.

Susanne is also a committee member of First Steps, a North American organization that helps parents through the early diagnosis of children with Prader-Willi. She says if she had access in the beginning to the sort of information she has now, a lot of mental anguish may have been prevented.

Lower-than-hoped returns of Fraser River sockeye and dangerously hot water temperatures upstream have prompted fishery managers to curtail test fishing in a bid to let as many salmon spawn as possible.

About 82,000 sockeye have already been caught through test fisheries and those salmon are sold to help offset the $1.4-million cost of the test program, which is critical to gauging the strength of incoming runs.

Pacific Salmon Commission chief biologist Mike Lapointe said Wednesday about half of test fishing operations have now been cancelled.

And three seine boats that continue to test fish offshore are now ordered to release nearly all sockeye after counting them instead of harvesting them.

“We’re trying to be good citizens and minimize our impact,” Lapointe said.

Asked why test fishing wasn’t adjusted earlier, he said the commission acted quickly once it became apparent continued hot, dry weather would pose a major risk.

“As soon as we knew we had a bad situation we acted as fast as we could,” Lapointe said. “Ideally, in perfect hindsight, it would

Although the test fishing program is $200,000 short of the revenue to cover its expenses, Lapointe said conservation, not budget concerns, guided the timing of the decision.

Sto:lo fishery advisor Ernie Crey said first nations have argued for catch-and-release test fishing for years, adding it would have reduced pressure on threatened Fraser stocks.

“Far more fish would have been up the Fraser River in all the intervening years,” Crey said. “It’s better late than never.

Finally they do the right thing at a time when fish runs are perilously low.”

There’s been no commercial

and sport fishing for Fraser sockeye this summer with no prospect for any unless the main summer run merely turns out to be late in arriving.

Lapointe said there are some signs that may be the case.

But even then, deadly high river water temperatures of more than 21 degrees now threaten to kill up to 70 per cent of incoming sockeye before they can spawn, meaning many more must be allowed to swim upriver to compensate.

“We’re expecting only on the order of a third of these fish to survive their journey up the Fraser to the spawning areas,” Lapointe said.

As a result, he said, there’s a “significant risk” that no more sockeye may end up spawning

this year than in the disastrous 2009 season that triggered the Cohen Inquiry.

Sockeye run on a four-year cycle, so the fish now migrating are the offspring of the 2009 run, and it had been hoped this would be the year that run started to rebuild.

The main summer run of Fraser sockeye is estimated at two million and although Lapointe said that may climb it may not be enough.

“We need a significantly larger run to get to any kind of harvestable surplus because the river conditions are so bad.”

Aboriginal food fishing has also been halted after a catch of about 270,000 sockeye, mainly from the early summer and early Stuart components of the run that had come in a bit stronger than expected.

It now looks like this year’s total Fraser River run will fall well short of the forecast of roughly 4.6 million but better than the 1.6 million return of 2009 when more than 10 million were expected.

There may be commercial, aboriginal and sport fishing for Fraser pink salmon – which are expected to arrive strongly in September – but that could also be reined in if there’s a risk of late-running sockeye being caught as a bycatch.

“I just don’t understand why ministry of environment is making Port Metro Vancouver go through all this additional work, effort, and frustration to try to satisfy these requirements,” he said.

Roscoe said he’s mindful of the environment but doesn’t see how a small amount of silt endangers the orcas, particularly as the variation in silt from each year could equal the amount they’re proposing to dispose.

“If it hadn’t found its way into the back eddies of the Ladner channels it would have gone right out to sea anyway,” he said.

Tom Corsie, vice president of real estate for Port Metro Vancouver, said they are in the midst of a typical and very normal environmental process, which involves sampling, testing, and modelling for in-river disposal of silt from Deas Slough.

“As we finalize the scope of the job we’ve got to do some more environmental work to get the approval to do the project,” he said, adding it’s a matter of giving environmental authorities the evidence they need to approve in-river disposal.

Corsie said recent chemical analysis of the proposed disposal area is similar to the proposed dredging areas and said that should help make the case for in-river disposal.

“For the majority of the material we’re proposing to dredge they’ve said OK,” he said. “They’ve said it’s not OK for Deas Slough and Steveston Harbour because of the really super fine material.”

Corsie said Port Metro Vancouver will be ready to submit an application at the earliest by mid-September and would still have enough time in the dredging season to get the job done if it’s approved in 60 days. Dredging can continue until March, before the freshet begins from melting snow in the Fraser River headwaters.

Car buff helps show thrive Volunteer Rick Richardson’s hot rods a labour of love

R

ick Richardson has spent his whole life around cars, so it’s little wonder why he chose to get involved as an organizer for the annual Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show.

Richardson is the owner and operator of Ladner Auto Body, where he has been working since his dad opened the shop in 1977. In addition to repairing the countless cars that roll through his shop daily, Richardson likes to spend his spare time restoring classic automobiles.

Richardson’s six-car garage is home to a wide assortment of classic American hot rods and muscle cars, the majority of them Chevrolets.

Parked in front of his shop is the red 1954 Chevy pickup, emblazoned with his shop’s logo across it.

Then there’s the “Granada gold” 1967 Chevy El Camino, the 1940 Chevy coupe, and the 1955 Chevy Bel Air hardtop he currently restoring.

“We’ve put a Corvette suspension in, A/C, it could be a daily driver when we’re finished,” he says.

A full restoration can take years, thousands of hours, and even more thousands of dollars to complete.

“My wife says this is my last project,” says Richardson. “She now knows more about cars than she ever thought she would.”

However, if there’s one car in his collection that will always have a special place in his heart, it’s his 1967 Pontiac Beaumont, the Canadian-built cousin of the Chevelle muscle car.

Richardson has owned the car since he was 17 years old, and four years ago he completed a ground-up restoration of his first car.

“I don’t take it out too much any more,” he says. “But when I do, a lot people take notice, especially here in Ladner. The people I grew up with recognize it, because I still have it from when I was in high school.”

This year he’ll be entering his 1954 Chevy Pickup and 1967 Chevy El Camino in the annual car show.

Richardson says the car show is a great opportunity to hang out with other car buffs and see vehicles that spend much of their lives in garages.

The first year the car show ran, Richardson didn’t hear about the event until a few days beforehand, so he and his dad Stan went down to show off their 1940 Chevy coupe.

Given his business and his passion for classic cars, Richardson says it was a no-brainer for him to get involved.

“There’s always been the quilt walk, but 10 years ago they got the idea to put the cars on the street so there’s something for the guys to do,” he says. “It’s a great event, because it has something for everyone.”

But the car show isn’t just about muscle cars and hot rods, he ads. There’s all sorts of obscure automobiles from around the world of every era, as well as vintage motorcycles.

“If you love your [car or motorbike], come down and show it off,” he says.

Close to 400 vehicles are expected to take part in the annual event this Sunday, Aug. 18.

• The Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show takes over Ladner Village along Delta Street and 48th Avenue.

While pre-registration is closed, you can still register your car on the day of the event from 8 to 10 a.m. for a $20 fee.

Compass Card blunder will cost TransLink

W

ith TransLink set to role out the new Compass Card fare system next year, comes word this week that after investing more than $170 million in new faregates, TransLink buses will no longer be getting the new fareboxes, in order to save $25 million.

The Compass Cards offer many benefits. Users can load money on their card and buy the equivalent of a monthly pass or get a similar discount to the FareSaver prepaid ticket booklets by buying ahead.

TransLink expects passengers will flock to adopt the reloadable Compass Card because of the convenience it will offer – ending the need to go to a store to buy a monthly pass – as well as other advantages like transfer of the balance if the card is lost or stolen.

However, those who opt to not buy one of the preloaded Compass Cards and instead choose to pay for their bus ride with mere cash will have to pay double should they want to transfer to a SkyTrain.

This is a policy that will unfairly target poorer riders, as well as the casual transit user. It certainly in no way encourages transit use, which should TransLink’s No. 1 priority.

TransLink estimates only about 6,000 riders will be affected by the decision to not upgrade the bus fareboxes, and the $25 million it would cost is not worth it.

However, given the cost of the Compass Card program to date and TransLink’s insistence at pushing forward with this ill-thought plan, it’s puzzling that they are suddenly concerned with how they spend taxpayer dollars.

TransLink estimates that fare evasion costs the local transit authority $7 million annually. If that’s the case, it will take TransLink close to 25 years just to break even on the Compass Card program, given the $170 million it has spent.

By that time, many of the faregates will obviously need to be repaired or replaced outright, so breaking even is unlikely.

TransLink has flushed $170 million down the toilet for this project. That’s a lot of money that could have better been spent adding buses and rolling stock, and improving service for transit users.

With gas prices at record highs thanks in part to TransLink’s gas tax, residents here in Delta are understandably frustrated with the transit authority.

Is it any wonder why so many Lower Mainland residents want to do away with TransLink?

Let your kids go free range T

here is a new movement afoot in the parenting world which is out of character with the current generation.

It’s called free-range kids, or slow parenting, which means taking a more hands-off approach to raising our children and letting them develop in their own way and time.

It’s radical in many ways, since the overprotected, overcoddled youth of today have never known life outside of the watchful eyes of their parents.

Surely you’ve seen this scene before: a group of parents hovering around their children at the playground, offering advice on how to play in a friendly, respectful and politically correct manner, apologizing to everybody within earshot when their two-year-old doesn’t quite grasp the concept of possession.

It reminds me quite a lot of the dog park. Children are escorted to and from a designated play area under adult supervision and then returned home for feeding and home entertainment.

It’s a vastly different generation than mine, though I think we were certainly on the cusp of the emerging bubble wrap parenting movement.

I remember playing outside with neighbourhood children without much, if any, adult supervision at all. We came when we were called by our mothers for lunch or supper, but oth-

er than that we were outside all the time. We bronzed in the summer and turned white in the winter, playing on nearby ice rinks that didn’t require parental supervision either.

The school bus conundrum in Delta is worrying parents–and rightly so–but when I was growing up I can recall walking to school every day. From Grade 3 or earlier I would walk to school, along with dozens of other children who would help the smaller ones. There were no parents.

There were no drop-offs, or if there were they were few and far between. There was no need for 200 cars to drop off 200 children at school every day. We were young and our legs were made for walking.

I can recall one time on my way to school I urgently needed to commune with nature and knocked on a stranger’s door. I wasn’t abducted by the occupant. A kind old lady showed me to the rest room.

We seemingly live in fear that our children can’t go through life without our constant supervision. During the Marina Garden Estates application somebody stood up and said, “somebody think of the children.” The kids are alright, ma’am.

Our fears are unfounded, or to paraphrase FDR, we have only fear to fear. Allowing our children more freedom may even help with many of the associated problems of the bubble wrap generation, including obesity, social isolation, and living in mom’s basement to the age of 30.

Letters to the editor Southlands will bring traffic The comments in the article “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Car” (Uncommon Sense, Aug. 2, 2013) were nothing more than free advertising for the proposed Southlands developer, Century Group.

“Bike and pedestrian-friendly corridors linking residential and green spaces in and orderly and environmentally sustainable manner.” What a delusion. We must face it - any development of the Southlands would be a car dependent community as is Tsawwassen Springs. It would be great to think we can exist without the car. Sure we can walk around the proposed area but it is a long trek to the Tsawwassen core for a doctor, dentist, pharmacy, restaurants etc.

We can certainly bike but try that with a case of beer or a bag of groceries. Remember the 950 plus cars that will be injected into our system if the Century Group’s proposal is approved the next time you are in the 56th Street parking lot.

TransLink dysfunctional It is astounding, that in an age where public transit is deemed successful on its

affordability and ease of use, TransLink and its management once again prove the Peter Principle, with one of its most incompetent decisions yet, that bus transfers will not work on SkyTrain and Canada Line trains and one must purchase another fare. In short, casual users of the transit system will be double billed if the journey has to continue on SkyTrain.

It is beyond belief!

If the Minister in charge of TransLink does not fire top management at TransLink for this sheer incompetence, the Premier needs to fire the Minister in charge for allowing such incompetence to continue. And while top TransLink management should be terminated immediately, the equally incompetent Board of Amateurs, that oversees TransLink should be fired as well for allowing the transfer fiasco to happen in the first place.

The Peter Principle is a proposition that states that the members of an organization where promotion is based on achievement, success, and merit will eventually be promoted beyond their level of ability.

It seems everyone who works at TransLink is promoted far beyond their abilities.

Affordable housing needed to fight ‘renoviction’ trend Re: “‘Affordable’ housing development in Ladner a step closer to reality,” Aug. 9, 2013.

Indeed, as a long-time non-market-rate apartment renter, I fear one day losing my own residence through eviction by reason of renovation (aka “renoviction”), a means by which large real-estate owners can become considerably wealthier by replacing non-market-rate rental units with big-bucks condos .

The renoviction epicentre, West End Vancouver, within the core of Vancouver-proper, got well under way about a decade ago; it’s been slowly creeping outward since. Where can a renter there possibly go to afford non-market-rate rental shelter, except in the outlying areas, the suburbs, until they’re eventually driven to the, for the most part, still-affordable Metro Vancouver outskirts, territory which will not themselves guarantee respite from the spread of the renoviction virus. And with the ‘renovictions’ infection spreading outwards from its ground-zero, “non-profit” coupled with “supportive housing” are as crucial as ever for the shelter-survival of the poorest Metro Vancouver folk.

Protect yourself and your family this summer

S

ummer time is definitely here and most of us are taking time away from work to travel, camp and enjoy our family and friends. A by-product of our hardearned summer adventures is a lot of empty houses, leaving neighbourhoods vulnerable to property crime.

However, there are a number of ways to secure your home and reduce the likelihood of being the victim of criminal activity.

The Community Police Stations in Delta offer a free program called “Citizens are Security Active” or CASA that will send trained volunteers to your home while you are away to check for any suspicious activity and implement general security measures such as ensuring your mail is not piling up while creating a sense of activity around your property.

Our visible presence in the neighbourhood also acts as a deterrent; our volunteer fleet is clearly marked as Delta Police property and I’ve never known a criminal that wants to be around anything police-related.

Neighbours play a vital role in our home security as well. Let your neighbours and friends know you are away and leave a key with someone you trust. If you are leaving teenagers at home, be certain to have an adult stop in and check on them. Last month I wrote about the importance of knowing your neighbours in times of crisis and home security is based on the same principle. Neighbourhood safety runs on a spectrum; from the basic concept of looking out for

each other during vacation times to the complexities around emergency preparedness. Nailing down the basics by getting to know your neighbours is a good start to having safer homes and communities.

While summer is a time for fun, it is also a time that brings a number of dangers. Much like protecting your home while you are away, there are basic principles to keep summer enjoyable while staying safe.

Do not drink and drive or operate a boat: rates of alcohol-related motor vehicle deaths has dropped substantially since the implementation of the Immediate Roadside Prohibition program, however we still see horrific accidents and this message cannot be repeated enough. Plan a safe ride home or the police will come up with an alternative for you.

Keep your children safe: the thought of a water-related accident strikes fear in any parent, and is one of the worst calls a police officer can respond to. Always use lifejackets on boats and keep the young ones in lifejackets when you are around lakes and swimming pools. Distractions are everywhere during social events and it only takes seconds for tragedy to occur.

Many accidents can be entirely avoided; protect yourselves using common sense and a safety plan.

It is our wish that everyone has a safe and pleasant summer – be safe and get outside and enjoy the sunshine with your loved ones.

Socialism isn’t just a word Re: NDP soul search going nowhere, B.C. Views, Aug. 1, 2013.

A significant aspect of NDP post-election soul searching, following its catastrophic defeat by the forces of free enterprise, will no doubt have to be coming to terms with the need to move the party further to the centre, away from its ideological far left-wing base.

While the federal NDP appears to have decided to delete references to “socialism” from its guiding party preamble to make it more palatable politically and competitive electorally, merely removing “socialism as a founding principle, without jettisoning its politically outdated doctrine, will not convince Canadians that the NDP is

anything but a socialist party.

Shakespeare perhaps said it best in ‘Romeo and Juliet’: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

Confronted with the political reality of the concept of socialism proving itself to be an abysmal failure throughout the world, being replaced by more free enterprise, less government and less social engineering, the question naturally arises as to whether B.C.’s NDP party will be able to “jump over its own ideological shadow” and abandon its traditional stand on the principles of democratic socialism, as defined in the B.C. provincial NDP constitutional preamble: “The New Democratic Party

believes that social, economic and political progress in Canada can only be assured by the application of democratic socialist principles to government and the administration of public affairs ... including, where necessary, the extension of the principle of social ownership.”

Stripped of its defining political raison d’être, however, NDP soul searching to remain a legitimate electoral contender in the province would make it a journey of heading somewhere into the future without the benefit of a road map and without a clear sense of its destination ... always carrying the baggage of its political past.

South Delta crime beat • A group of youth was reported drinking and smoking marijuana on the grounds of Ladner Elementary School on Aug. 12 at 10:45 p.m.

Police attended but the youth were gone on arrival. A police patrol of the area proved negative.

• On Aug. 10 at 2 a.m., Delta Police received a report that a group of youths had pulled several boards from the fence of a residence on the 4600-block of 51st Avenue, and that the resident had located the boards on a car in the area. The owner of the vehicle indicated that she was at party in the area and when she came out to the car there were several males near her vehicle. Patrol of the area proved negative. Damage to fence, which is an ongoing problem, is estimated at $200.

• A resident on the 4800-block of 44A Avenue reported her bicycle had been stolen on Aug. 9. The resident said the bike had been stolen from the side of her residence. The bike is described as being blue/ grey with silver handle bars and seat, and grey saddle bags. Police provided the complainant with the Corporation of Delta phone number to search found bicycle storage.

• A routine traffic stop resulted in the seizure

of a small amount of marijuana. Delta Police pulled the car over on the 3600-block of River Road West at 11:20 p.m. on Aug. 7. Both the driver and passenger admitted to smoking marijuana thirty minutes before driving.

Permission was given to police to search the vehicle and several items, including a small amount of marijuana and a small grinder, were seized and tagged for analysis and destruction.

• A suspected drunk driver had their licence suspended and car impounded after crashing into a parked car on Aug. 5. A resident on the 4600-block of 46A Street was awakened at 6 a.m. by the sound of a collision outside.

When he investigated he found a vehicle had hit his van parked in front of his home. The suspect driver indicated he had swerved to avoid a raccoon and hit the van. Police attended and found the driver to possibly be under the influence of alcohol. Breath samples provided read “fail,” and a 90-day roadside suspension was given. The suspect’s vehicle was also impounded.

• A Tsawwassen resident reported to police on Aug. 6 that his bank account had been accessed fraudulently.

with a total 0f $12,000 being withdrawn from his account. The complainant told police he accesses his account via his smart phone or his laptop computer.

Police suggested to the complainant that he ensure his computer is virus free, the WiFi is secure, and all passwords to his bank account are changed.

• Delta Police received a report on Aug. 2 from a concerned citizen who had followed a vehicle to Ferry Road which

was weaving all over the road. Police located the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop.

The driver appeared to be impaired and was arrested and transported to headquarters where breath samples were subsequently provided.

The suspect was given a 24 hour roadside suspension and he was released on a promise to appear in court at a future date. Impaired Driving charges have been recommended.

Studio West Dance came back from the Dance Power Summerfest Finals in Kelowna with a number of gold medals in July. The Ladner dance studio competed with other studios from all over B.C. and Alberta, bringing over 100 of its students to the competition. Studio West dancers had a top-two score in each of the three divisions and also took home approximately $1,000 in cash prizes.

Studio West’s Jyla Davis and Tracy Neff are teaming up with 25+ talented Delta kids to bring Disney’s Aristocats to life for two performances this Saturday, Aug. 17 (1:30 and 3 p.m.). The production will take place at Delta Secondary School. Aristocats is a one-act kids show that runs about 30 minutes and is based on the 1970’s Disney film. The cost is $5 for kids and $7 for adults and the entrance to the show is on the west side of Delta Secondary School near the track.

Metro Vancouver bus passengers who now pay with cash and use a paper transfer to later board SkyTrain will find themselves paying double if they don’t adopt the Compass card after the new payment system takes effect in 2014.

TransLink says fare boxes on buses won’t be able to issue paper tickets to cash-paying passengers that are compatible with the SkyTrain faregates. Passengers who try to use them will be forced to pay again at a SkyTrain station.

Spokesman Derek Zabel predicts the vast majority of riders will use the Compass card and have no problem but concedes more public education will be needed.

A compatible system on buses would have cost an extra $25 million.

“It wasn’t a cost-effective solution,” he said.

Bus-to-bus paper transfers will still work, as will SkyTrain-to-bus transfers – it’s only bus-to-SkyTrain transfers where tickets will be incompatible.

An estimated 6,000 people a day use bus-to-SkyTrain paper transfers after paying cash.

That’s a small fraction of the

more than 1.2 million daily transit trips, Zabel said, noting most riders already use a pass or some other form of pre-paid fare.

While Compass cards are expected to roll out before the end of the year – after an extensive testing period this fall – both the new and the old system will work simultaneously for months before the faregates are fully activated.

“We’re not going to close the gates until people fully understand how to use the system,” Zabel said.

The cards are being configured to replicate existing payment offerings so users can load money on their card and buy the equivalent of a monthly pass or get a similar discount to the FareSaver prepaid ticket booklets by buying ahead.

Discounts will range up to 14 per cent, according to Zabel.

TransLink expects passengers will flock to adopt the reloadable Compass card because of the convenience it will offer – ending the need to go to a store to buy a monthly pass – as well as other advantages like transfer of the balance if the card is lost or stolen.

Gavin Davies, vice-president of the CAW union local representing Coast Mountain bus drivers, said there’s concern angry passengers who are forced to pay again to

board SkyTrain will take out their fury on bus drivers.

“They’re going to immediately retaliate against the next bus driver they see,” he predicted, adding driver assaults could increase.

The move was blasted by transit users on social media and an online petition has been started demanding TransLink abandon the “double transit fee.”

It’s not the only change associated with the Compass card conversion that’s drawing controversy.

TransLink is also axing the Employer Pass Program that offered a 15 per cent discount to employees of participating employers. It was often coupled with employer-offered perks like preferential parking as a way to encourage more transit use while reducing the number of workplace parking stalls required.

“It wasn’t fair,” Zabel said. “Some select people and groups were benefitting while other people weren’t getting that same level of discount.”

TransLink says employer pass users can buy monthly passes now, but in many cases that may cost them more.

TransLink will also phase out FareSaver prepaid tickets in January.

An application to subdivide the northeast corner lot at Grove Avenue and Central Avenue in Ladner was denied by council for a third time following a public hearing last month.

The owners, Armelin and Clarinda Da Silva, wanted to subdivide the 928 square-metre site into two lots and build two 390 square-metre single-family houses, each two storeys in height. But to squeeze them both into the allotted area, the applicants had asked for a variance permit to reduce the minimum setbacks and the front yard average requirements.

For most residents on Grove Avenue it was no better than the previous two times the application had been to public hearing, submitting a 100-signature petition to council in opposition.

Robert McLean, homeowner on Grove Avenue for 26 years, said he contacted 53 of the 57 homeowners in the catchment area of the development and said 87 per cent were not in favour of the rezoning.

He said the development would impair direct line of sight for drivers at the corner with the variances to the setback.

“The proposed variance will cause drivers to block the crosswalk as they try to maneuver into Central,” he said. “Pedestrians, school children will also be put at risk as it will im-

McLean said residents bought their homes in the area for the spacious lot sizes and don’t

want to see an increase in density.

“I am even more appalled at the suggestions for this development this time around than I was before,” said Tony Lawton, who has lived on Grove Avenue for 53 years. “This isn’t the first time that we’ve opposed vigorously what he is trying to do. It’s not the second time. It’s the third time.”

Jim Holt, a 25-year resident of Grove, said the street is already dangerous for traffic and the proposal would make it even more dangerous.

But architect Brian Hart, speaking on behalf of the Da Silvas, said no obstruction would exist at the corner of Grove and Central and that everything conformed to the Official Community Plan.

This is a very popular topic right now from the Baby Boomer Demographic. The empty nesters. The largest demographic in Canada are nearing retirement, and a good portion of the boomers’ net worth is in their properties. Boomers are now trying to be pro-active in their retirement planning process, but are also very hesitant to make the downsizing decision too soon! If you are an empty nester, and a large portion of your net worth is in your home, and the home is more than you need, then now is as good a time as ever! Downsizing is difficult, but is a necessary step for many people and I don’t see many benefits in delaying this decision. I see more positives! There are many different options. Just make sure you are planning for the future as you start this process. Make sure you think hard before buying a 3-Level unit or something with too many stairs. What is the “walkability” of the location you are considering? Are there lots of amenities nearby? How reasonable are monthly maintenance costs? Does the “strata” complex you are considering have any upcoming special levy’s or assessments that could drain your savings account? How big of a place do you really need?

Would you rather be in a smaller house somewhere without any sort of strata and hanle your own maintenance? A lower maintenance, smaller property, can offer you more time to do all the other things you never had the time for like hobbies, travelling, volunteer work, etc! If you are moving out of our beloved South Delta as many end up doing when they downsize, please make sure you fully research the area and neighbourhoods you are moving into. You do not want to make the big move, buy a place, etc,then to find you don’t like that area and need to start the process all over again!

Some people find it a good idea to rent for a little while if they are going to a new area that they don’t know well enough! There are many more things to consider and talk about when it comes time to make this big decision of downsizing. I say treat it as an adventure! A new chapter in life! It can be stressful, but also can be very exciting!

Sam Da Silva, the son of the owners, told council he and his parents have lived in Delta for years and felt the subdivision of the lot into two homes was a better fit for the area than a 4,000-square-foot (371 square-meter) home with a legal secondary suite of 1,000-square-feet.

Council did not agree. “We do a lot of two lot subdivisions and I’m fully supportive of infill, I just think it’s too much,� said Coun. Bruce McDonald. “I don’t think it works on that street or that corner the way it’s developed.�

But Coun. Scott Hamilton warned that the neighbourhood should be prepared for what the owner is willing to move forward with in a future application.

The application was denied by council, with Couns. Hamilton and Jeannie Kanakos in support of the subdivision.

The BC Provincial Government requires all B.C. Strata’s — 5 units and over — to complete a Depreciation Report by December 13, 2013 whether commercial or residential.

Commercial class properties are NOT EXEMPTED. The Strata Property Act does not contain any significant wording to differentiate between commercial and residential strata developments. Therefore a commercial strata property has the same requirements to maintain both an operating fund and a contingency reserve fund.

COMPONENT ISSUES: For commercial strata developments it is also necessary to carefully delineate which components are the responsibility of a specific section or type of unit. This is known as a sectioned strata. It is not uncommon to see components of the property which are exclusively used for more than one but not all property owners.

For example, the contingency reserve contribution to a loading dock used by the commercial users but not the residential units in the strata requires different treatment for reserve purposes.

The Depreciation Report is intended to provide information for the strata corporation so it can make informed decisions. It is not a legal document and has limitations with respect to consideration of legal ownership issues.

The report is a tool forming part of a strata corporation’s information base upon which to build a strategy for the property and long term financial goals of the project.

Baptist church townhouses approved in second go around Development originally rejected for being too ‘box-like’ and having flat roofs

The townhouse development behind Ladner’s restored and refurbished Baptist Church was approved for third reading by Delta Council on July 29.

It was the second application submitted for the development, which was initially rejected by council last December for being too modern for the heritage area.

The first proposal faced a 101-signature petition against what was to be Delta’s first “green” rooftop on each of the three townhouses.

The new application is for three townhouses behind the Baptist Church at the corner of 47A Avenue and Delta Street. Each building will be three storeys in height with a two-car garage accessed from the rear lane.

Access to the front of the townhouses will be from a shared pedestrian walkway from Delta Street.

the second storey.

Some of the same residents who opposed the first application were also against the new one, citing a problem with building height, parking, and a variance that will allow the building to abut to the sidewalk.

But council didn’t agree with those concerns, pointing out that the development’s height was within the zoning bylaws and that some leeway should be given for the developer by saving the heritage church.

Developer Steve Knoblauch said he spent $1 million on purchasing the land and lifting and moving the church to a new concrete foundation. Knoblauch has refurbished the church inside and out, including fixing the church tower.

“I just want to thank the proponent for the work on the heritage buildings in Ladner very, very much,” said Coun. Jeannie Kanakos.

“There’s something to be said for saving heritage buildings and there are not too many people that want to do that anymore or have the money or the ambition to do that,” said Coun. Ian Paton, adding sometimes council has to “cut a little slack” to developers willing to do it.

“I think it’s a real gem in the village of Ladner, the old Baptist Church.”

The Baptist church was built in 1901-02 with the help of community volunteers, and a spire was added in 1910-11. Over the past hundred years the building had sunk into the earth six inches and the spire was leaning five inches out of plumb.

Dry summer hasn’t drained Metro reservoirs

Despite a sunny and rain-free July, Metro Vancouverites kept tap water usage under control.

And regional district officials are crediting tightened lawn sprinkling regulations for the water conservation success during the record dry spell.

Metro Vancouver dispensed an average of 1.45 billion litres a day last month, with a peak of 1.6 billion litres on July 24.

The region consistently stayed well below its oneday record high for water consumption of more than two million litres set four years ago.

“It appears that mornings-only lawn sprinkling regulations across the region have helped to reduce the demand for our high-quality drinking water in summer, when the demand for water soars during hot and sunny days,” said North Vancouver City Mayor Darrell Mussatto, who chairs Metro’s utilities committee.

Metro decided to ban evening lawn sprinkling to ease demand at peak hours when many households are running dishwashers, clothes washers and baths.

Metro reservoirs are currently about 78 per cent full – somewhat lower levels than the previous two summers when more rain fell, but still well within what’s considered the normal range.

Metro has plenty of water most of the year but its North Shore reservoirs can run low in the peak-use summer months if homes and businesses consume too much.

Mussatto said collective diligence in conserving water helps postpone the need for costly new projects to build higher dams and bigger mains and pumping stations.

Lawn sprinkling is only allowed before 9 a.m. in the morning, three days a week, between June 1 and Sept.

But it wasn’t the Tatra’s silver curves that first drew Cullen to this unique automobile.

The beauty of the Tatra is far more than skin deep.

“I was first attracted to it because of its engineering,” Cullen says. “Growing up, all my friends were interested in muscle cars, but I was into Citroens because they were so advanced.”

Cullen’s Tatra T-87 will be one of the hundreds of classic cars entered in this year’s Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show, this Sunday Aug. 18. This is the 10th anniversary of the event and close to 400 vehicles are expected to take part.

The car also featured rack-and-pinion steering, independent suspension, a 12-volt electrical system, a self-lubricating chassis, and a lightweight magnesium alloy V-8 engine mounted in the rear.

The Tatra T-87 was decades ahead of its time, says Cullen, and a beautiful example of form following function.

Cullen is a bit of an innovator himself, having helped pioneer the art of 3-D holography, so it’s no wonder the Tatra’s technological advancements caught his attention.

The Tatra T-87 is notable for its many technological firsts.

It was the first car to be aerodynamically designed in a wind tunnel, which improved the car’s fuel economy. Paul Jaray, who designed the large Zeppelin airships, was responsible for the Tatra’s smooth lines, while famed engineer Hans Ledwinka was responsible for the overall design.

“Up until that point, cars were pretty boxy,” says Cullen. “There were cars that looked aerodynamic, but none that were properly designed [to reduce air resistance].

The curvy streamlined design of his Czechoslovakian-made 1948 Tatra T-87 gives the car the appearance of an Art Deco spaceship.

There is a tail fin jutting from the rear engine cowling, gaping louvers on either side of the vehicle designed to swallow air for the air-cooled engine, and of course, the distinctive triple headlight design.

“This car was designed to go 50 per cent faster than the cars of the day,” says Cullen.

“So they figured they needed 50 per cent more light.”

Gary Cullen photo If you’ve ever seen a hologram watch, ubiquitous as they were in the 1980s, chances are they were made by Cullen’ company, Holocrafts.

The success of his company has allowed Cullen to amass an impressive collection of automobiles, including a handful of classic Citroens.

His current Tatra is the second 1948 T-87 he’s owned. In 1991, Cul-

len bought and restored his first Tatra, which now resides in the Minneapolis Institute of Art as a piece of sculpture in the museum’s Art Deco exhibit.

While the car looks unique by today’s standards, it looked absolutely alien when it was first released in the 1930s.

Tatra is still around today, and is the third oldest continuously operating automobile manufacturer on earth, after Daimler and Peugeot.

The company built its last passenger car in 1999, and today focuses on commercial and military vehicles.

During the Second World War, the Tatra was dubbed “The Czech’s secret weapon” against the Nazis. As the story goes, many high-ranking officers were killed on winding mountain roads by the car’s ferocious oversteer resulting from the rear-engine, reardrive configuration. However, after researching the history of the Tatra during the war, Cullen says he’s found no actual confirmed cases of that actually happening.

“I think it’s a bit of a myth,” he says.

The Tatra’s reputation for fishtailing is well-earned, however.

“Over the years I’ve got pretty good at drifting,” says Cullen.

Despite that, many high-ranking Nazis

did choose the distinctive Czechoslovakian car as their personal limousine.

“It was very popular with engineers, I think that’s why they were attracted to it, because it was so advanced for its time,” says Cullen.

Among the Tatra’s infamous owners were airplane engineers Wilhelm Messerschmitt and Ernst Heinkel, as well as German General Erwin Rommel.

Adolf Hitler proclaimed the Tatra as the car of the Autobahn, and it provided the inspiration for the Volkswagen Beetle, the most widely produced car on the planet.

But the Tatra T-87 was never a big seller.

During its 15-year production run, only 3,000 were ever produced, many of them being reserved for diplomats and high-ranking government officials.

“It was always a polarizing car,” says Cullen. “People either loved it or hated.”

Cullen estimates there might currently be a dozen or so Tatra T-87s in North America, many of them belonging to former Czechoslovakian ambassadors.

As a result, Cullen is often turned to by the Tatra community for advice, having owned T-87s for more than 20 years.

“Hi Gary, I just bought a Tatra, I heard you’re the guy to talk to,” one memorable phone conversation began. It was talk show host and car buff Jay Leno calling from Hollywood, California.

Leno invited Cullen and his wife Karoline down to see his massive car collection, housed at the Burbank Airport.

They visited Leno’s workshop, and Cullen advised Leno’s mechanic crew on the many complexities of Tatra restoration, as replacement parts aren’t easy to come by.

“He has about a half dozen guys working for him, but he gets in there too,” says Cullen. “He likes to get his hands dirty.”

Cullen’s T-87 is by no means a “garage queen,” and he drives it around town regularly, even taking it on some far flung road trips.

In 2000, he and another Tatra T-87 owner travelled to the Arctic Circle on the legendary unpaved Dempster Highway with their families in tow. The six-week trip took them trough B.C., Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and into Alaska.

“The reactions we got varied from total disbelief to amazement,” he says.

Despite getting caught in a blizzard in the middle of August north of the Arctic Circle, the Tatras made it home safe and sound, if a little dinged up.

“They still hold up surprisingly well,” he says.

One of the quilts that will be on display at the 10th Annual Quilt Walk and Car Show this Sunday has been touched by hands from across the entire nation.

It was sewn together using five dozen neckers from Scouts across Canada, including the Yukon and the Northwest Territories, who attended the 13th Scout Jamboree in Alberta from July 6-13.

The idea of making a quilt made from neckers was raised during the event planning, says Sandi Burns of London, Ontario, who was attending her fifth Jamboree. Everybody seemed to agree it was a great idea, until they asked who was able to sew.

The organizers all looked from one to the other until their eyes settled on Burns.

“And I, silly me, put up my hand,” she says, laughing.

She worked six hours a day, from Monday to Friday, sewing two triangle-shaped neckers into each square, creating the five-by-six square quilt.

It may be that the stereotypical image of a quilter is that of an elderly woman sitting in a rocking chair, quietly stitching together a patchwork heirloom to pass on to the next generation.

But as Dawn Fielden and Carol Bobick giggle girlishly about their latest quilting fabric depicting half-naked men in Santa Claus suits, that mental image is thoroughly shattered.

The new owners of The Quilted Bear originally met during a quilting course at the same store 10 years ago and have been going every month since. Over the years they’ve seen quilters from every

walk of life and every age group.

“There’s this whole movement out there that’s called the modern quilt guild movement,” says Fielden, adding there are two local guilds located in Vancouver and Abbotsford.

These young quilting revolutionaries are rediscovering sewing and taking it to a new level with bold colours and creative designs.

“They’re really different than the ones that our grandparents made out of the leftover fabrics that they had,” says Bobick.

The process of quilting together two or more layers of material has ancient traditions dating back to the Egyptian First Dynasty, about 3400 B.C. Archeologists have uncovered quilted floor coverings in

Mongolia that were made almost 2,000 years ago. During the European Middle Ages, they became a popular garment for knights, and later as fashionable male clothing from the 14th to 17th centuries for doublets.

Quilting exploded during American colonial times, most notably from African American quilters such as Harriet Powers, who passed on their stories of the slave trade in this way. Today, unusual fabrics and colours have become popular among interior designers as decorative textiles and home furnishings. Bobick says The Quilted Bear is frequented by many of the local twenty-somethings looking for a hip new design.

Huge quilt made from neckers ❙ From P.21

As the quilt neared completion it was decided that everybody who provided a necker put their name put into a bin for a random draw.

“I didn’t realize how emotional I was going to get about it,” says Burns, adding she had become quite attached to the quilt.

When the draw was held, it was the 3rd Boundary Bay Scouts who held the winning piece of paper and would be taking it back to Delta.

“One of the youth was there ready to pick up their evening food box and he said, oh I’ll go get a leader, and by the time the leader came back I was thinking I’m not sure I

want to give this away,” says Burns, laughing.

She only had two requirements when it came to surrendering the quilt. The first was that it would be properly finished–which was overseen by The Quilted Bear in Ladner.

The other request was that the quilt come back for the next Canadian Jamboree in 2016 in Nova Scotia.

“So, it’s an ongoing talking piece, not just for this one Canadian Jamboree,” says Burns.

The Boundary Bay Scouts happily agreed. The quilt will be on display, among hundreds of others, at the Quilt and Car Walk Show this Sunday in Ladner.

Fielden says The Boundary Bay Quilters Guild has been around for 13 years and meets in the Sacred Heart Parish once a month with a membership of about 100 people.

Members list all sorts of different reasons for being attracted to quilting, but Fielden says it’s relaxing.

“When I discovered quilting that was it, I was hooked,” says Bobick, who has been sewing since she was a girl. There are two ways to make a quilt: the first option is the traditional method of following a predetermined pattern. But more often people are choosing the second option of designing the entire quilt

themselves, picking the colours, fabric, and pattern on their own.

“You can personalize everything you make, or you can just copy something you like,” she says.

Not knowing how to sew isn’t a reason not to try quilting. The Quilted Bear offers sewing classes in a friendly atmosphere that nurtures creativity. And since the seams are straight, quilting is more about artistic design than technical skill.

Bobick says the Quilt Walk and Car Show is a great marriage of interests for couples, admitting that in the first few years of the show her husband was “bored stiff.” But in the third year they added the cars.

Antique quilts Open Space Yoga will be hosting about 15 oversized and antique quilts in their store for the eighth year in a row.

“It’s a nice fit because there’s not many large walls in Ladner, so it’s great we’re in the centre of it all,” said owner Michael Rudd. “The people really appreciate being able to see the large ones that can’t be displayed in the windows.

Visitors can view the quilts during the Quilt and Car Walk Show on Sunday, Aug. 18 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“Well then my husband didn’t mind going, and then he added his own car,” she says, adding they’re each able to contribute to the show and enjoy it equally.

“The women who are quilters who want to see quilts can drag their husbands along… and then it makes it a unique car show that people from all over will come here just to see the cars.”

Bobick says one woman recently told her that she and her husband make the trip every year from Mission, an 82 km drive. The 10th Annual Quilt Walk and Car Show gets underway this Sunday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m.

Smooth yoga moves

Shanti Yoga owner offers up a smoothie that satisfies

T

h r e e years ago Chantal O’Sullivan was working a stressful job as a reporter in Vancouver and trying to find ways to relax in between the 24hour news cycle.

She decided to leave her job and take the plunge into owning her own business, opening Shanti Yoga in Tsawwassen. Although she still writes, yoga has become her passion and her main stress reliever.

Chantal says that sometimes people don’t even realize they are physically and mentally stressed out until they take a yoga class.

“I love bringing people together and I love making people feel good,” she says.

The slow and steady breathing and the relaxation helps repair the body and mind from the damage done by working in a fast-paced world.

Chantal says that yoga makes her feel stronger and her body responds to the exercise.

“Like a lot of people as soon as I tried it I like it,” says the 30-something yoga instructor, recalling her first experience at the age of 18. “Right away I knew it feels good.”

for the first time because it can be intimidating to see people perform difficult moves or touch their toes if the person is inflexible and out of shape.

She says there’s no need to worry.

“People have this idea you have to be fit to do yoga, but you don’t have to. You just have to be able to breathe.”

Breathing deeply in a calm and quiet environment isn’t just relaxing, it’s also good for the lungs and blood circulation.

Being in a quiet environment helps because until a person experiences complete silence, one doesn’t realize how much noise pollution there is in a city.

When students are ready to try more complicated moves (see photo at left), the mental focus takes the person away from the responsibilities of groceries, work, and other daily chores.

Chantal says that because our lives are so busy and yet often sedentary–sitting at computers in an office–for people to relax it takes conscious breathing and concentration to make a person feel really alive.

“It’s important that everybody who comes to yoga class feels good when they leave,” she says.

People take yoga for all sorts of reasons. Some come in for fitness, others for spiritual and emotional reasons.

It’s also for all ages and fitness levels.

The less flexible you think you are, the more you need yoga.

“I love living in Tsawwassen because it’s such a healthy place,” says Chantal, adding with the amount of running and exercise people get here, they need to stretch before or afterward.

Part of yoga is being conscious of what you eat because it can affect your mood and overall health.

Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club’s Pricilla Westlake topped the podium at the Canadian National Junior Women’s Lawn Bowls Championship last week in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

Westlake was representing B.C. at the U-18 tournament, and came out on top of the round robin play. That set up a gold medal final with Stir-

ling Wood of Ontario, who Westlake handily defeated in straight sets, 11-4 and 15-1.

“Pricilla has brought national attention to our club and to the cause of junior lawn bowling in Canada,” said club spokesperson Mary Hargreaves.

“Who could ask for a more charming ambassador?”

Westlake also won gold at the provincial junior tournament last month in North Vancouver.

The Ladner Pioneers were unable to finish off the Tri-City Bandits Sunday night at Sungod Arena, as the local Senior B lacrosse team lost 9-8 to drop the best-of-five playoff series three games to two.

It was the sixth straight league title for the Bandits.

The Bandits held a 3-1 lead after one period and went up 5-1 in the second before the Pioneers woke up. Ladner pulled to 5-3 at the end of the second and jumped ahead 6-5 in the third.

Tsawwassen’s Max Williams played a key role as his North Shore Junior Twins won the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League championship last weekend.

The South Delta pitcher threw a complete game against Abbotsford in the Twins’ must-win qualifying game on Saturday. Williams only allowed five hits, one walk, and struck out four batters as North Shore won 8-1.

The Twins won three games in a row on the final day of the tournament, beating the Langley Junior Blaze in Langley to take the B.C. title.

The Twins carried their momentum into the final, scoring three runs in the first inning and two more in the second as they cruised to a 7-2 win.

It was the first-ever championship title for the North Shore Junior Twins, who finished the regular season in first place.

“Winning three games in a day can be intimidating,” said Parker Kynoch, head coach of North Shore Junior Twins.

“The guys did a good job of staying in the moment pitch to pitch and really supported one another.”

Kynoch said Williams’ performance was key to the Twins success, and he couldn’t be more proud of his players.

“From day one we knew we had a quality group of guys and they stuck with the plan for most part of the season and were rewarded for their hard work,” he said.
