Flood Aid concert raises $1.4M BY BILL GRAVELAND THE CANADIAN PRESS CALGARY — Calgarians boogied in a different kind of boots Thursday night at a sellout concert in Calgary for Alberta flood relief. In honour of the work of volunteers and those who were forced to clean out mud and garbage from water-soaked homes in the severe flooding that devastated southern Alberta eight weeks ago, many of the 32,000 people on hand were wearing rubber boots.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper was a surprise guest at the event and spent the evening in the stands along with Alberta Premier Alison Redford. Despite a star-studded lineup that included Loverboy, Nickelback, Jann Arden, Randy Bachman, the Sheepdogs and Ian Tyson, some of the biggest applause was for Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who acted out a lifelong dream of introducing a band at a rock concert. “I’ve always wanted to be a rock and roll announcer. Some people want to be on stage and I wanted to

be an announcer,” Nenshi told master of ceremonies Brent Butt. “Here we go — Ladies and gentlemen, give it up — for Tom Cochrane!” Butt, star of TV’s Corner Gas, kept the show moving along and told the crowd they were part of history. “We’re going live all over the planet. This is going out on the internet, which I don’t know if you’ve heard — it’s worldwide.”

Although the staff at the Bowden Sunmaze, such as Natasha Zyderveld and her mother, Katrina, of Olds, are waiting for the sunflowers to bloom, the lilies and other ornamental flowers are showing their fine colours on the farm west of Bowden. The SunMaze is open for people to wander through and get lost and found in and will likely come in to full bloom soon. Other activities on the Eagle Creek Farm, about 7 km northwest of Bowden, include you pick vegetables and flowers and a corn maze. For further information, log on to www.sunmaze.ca.

Climate aside, Central Alberta has much in common with Arizona and Australia. Some of those similarities were highlighted on Wednesday and Thursday, when Central Alberta: Access Prosperity hosted visitors from both warmweather jurisdictions. Michael Carroll, vice-president of business attraction with the Arizona Commerce Authority, toured Red Deer College’s Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing, industrial sites and the Red Deer Airport, among other places. He also met with local business operators and politicians, including at a Wednesday evening networking dinner in Red Deer. Carroll described how his state has a well-educated and youthful population, is business-friendly with low taxes and favourable regulations, and enjoys strong transportation links. “Within a 16-hour drive you have access to almost 70 million people,” he said. Arizona’s key sectors are aerospace and defence, renewable energy, science and technology (particularly in the medical field), and small business innovation, said Carroll.

Veer confirmed her plans to run for mayor on Thursday at Veterans Park, surrounded by friends, family, onlookers and veterans. “I feel ready for a new mandate,” said Veer. “I have a great vision and I want to be able to work with the people of Red Deer and for me to be able to accomplish what I hope to accomplish with and for the people of Red Deer, I need a new mandate and a new level of authority to do that.” Veer, 35, said she chose the location because she wanted to thank those who served the country because without them, she would not be in a position to serve any elected position.

Veer. “If we make wise decisions in the short term, then I think in long term Red Deer can absolutely live up to even greater possibilities than we have accomplished before.” Mayor Morris Flewwelling will not seek another term after 21 years on council. In January, Coun. Cindy Jefferies, also a thirdterm councillor, announced she would be seeking the mayor’s position. “You have to run your own race,” said Veer. “I think throughout the campaign . . . obviously that has been an undercurrent in the community, will two incumbents run in a race against each other? But my position is: I am going to say who I am and what I stand for. So I am running for Red Deer and not against someone.”

Veer said something transpired within her when she was walking along the parade route in 2012. She said it came to her that “her life’s purpose was to serve the people of Red Deer.” Although Veer said she has known in her heart for a while that she would run, she wanted to keep it close to her chest because she is still in a governance position. Tara Veer She wanted to wait until closer to the election. Veer said she will release her specific platform details over the coming weeks. In the meantime, she said Red Deer is a small city that is becoming a much larger city very quickly. “With challenges there are opportunities,” said
