flocks of birds landing there, Paul Trussel wrote in the first issue of the Trail Journal of Local History: “In 1912 … dad negotiated with the CPR to have a nearby flag-stop for up-lake trips of steamers and recommended that the location be designated Birds Landing after the original surveyor of the area.”

Although neither was a surveyor, the landing was possibly named after brothers Robert Montagu (1863-1939) and Harry Bird (1857-1940), who ran a real estate, insurance, and mining business in Nelson, and dealt in Arrow Lakes properties.

BOSUN LANDING This spot between Silverton and New Denver on Slocan Lake was first mentioned in The Ledge of October 13, 1898: “A good road has been built from the lakeshore to the workings and the ore is shipped from the Bosun landing.”

Bosun is also the name of a mine, ranch, and New Denver opera house, all named by Joseph Colebrook Harris (1871-1951), who came to the area in 1897. The name honoured a ship’s bosun he met in Vancouver who struck an officer.

Bakers Landing on Kootenay Lake’s east shore was named for Reginald Herbert Baker (18571924). Baker’s family and a few others were shown living there on the 1911 census.

In Impressions of the Past, authors Terry Turner and Susan Hulland quote a March 14, 1914 diary entry by Thomas Langton: “Mr. Parkinson started for Bakers in the evening to get the mail but could not find the place so I took him down in the rowboat.” By May, Bakers Landing was on the CPR timetable.

Turner and Hulland say Bakers was the area of the Pilot Peninsula consisting of Lots 2560 and 4962 and adjoined the community of Pilot Bay to the south.

While it never officially had a post office, anecdotal evidence strongly suggests that there was one. Postal records indicate the Pilot Bay post office moved to Kootenay Bay in 1908, but in Four Score and More, William Fraser writes that it moved one mile north to the old McLellan property, which became Bakers Landing.

Fraser says Reginald Baker ran the post office from his home. Indeed, the 1915 civic directory listed Baker as postmaster. It’s not clear how long this continued, but by 1918 Baker was listed simply as a rancher, and mail for Bakers Landing was addressed via Kootenay Bay. A late mention came in the Creston Valley Advance of February 28, 1972: “Rosemary Gunther lives at Bakers Landing in a very old house.”

“All 14 machines work out your whole body and the resting stations are actually deigned to keep you heart rate up,” explained Mann.

“When somebody comes in here the No. 1 thing we ask is what is your goal because everybody has a different goal and based on that, there is little variation on how you can use the machinery.”

In denial then, and only 37 years-old, the Trail woman thought she must be coming down with the flu.

A few weeks passed and she was taken to the Trail hospital by ambulance and learned that she had, in fact, suffered from a stroke.

Twelve years later, Woods now continues to travel along her road to recovery.

How did we get here, and how do we get home?

In a modern urban landscape, even without the benefit of an up-to-date GPS unit, there’s a reasonably good chance a person can find their way around with the benefit of a basic map.

It’s not true in every case, but city planners are likely to include a predictable grid system, especially straightforward if numbers are used for streets and avenues.

It’s when the seemingly unavoidable quirks in the system show up that frustration kicks in and help is required.

An introduction of the pursuit of orienteering was held this past Saturday at Selkirk College in Castlegar and the weather could not have been more suitable. Doug and Linda Clark led the session and a small group of interested folks took part.

Consider being plunked in the middle of a strange wilderness environment, with no familiar landmarks.

You have the benefit of a map and compass, but unless you’re familiar with their proper use you could

still spend a lot of time getting to where you need to be. It could mean inconvenience and, in some cases, it could mean danger.

With an accurate map and a compass a person trained in orienteering can move to where they need to be.

Valuable time and energy is not wasted as futile routes are attempted, only to be abandoned. With orienteering capability, a properly equipped adventurer can find the right route. These

Welcome to our regular feature introducing the artists behind the sculptures in this year’s Castlegar SculptureWalk. half silhouettes, one masculine, one feminine, their connectivity providing the dimensionality he seeks and, with the swirling arms embracing them, “an infinite vortex of the unity of opposites.”

At the very centre of the sculpture sits a red heart of glass (also sculpted to resemble an apple, invoking the biblical story) with glass detail, surrounded by an opening to catch and reflect the light. Viewed from almost any angle, it radiates warmth and provides a stunning focal point.

Mir Agol ‘Unity’ (steel, glass) A multi-talented conceptual artist/ photographer/sculptor who is comfortable and proficient in diverse art forms, Vancouver’s Mir Agol presents ‘Unity’ at this year’s Sculpturewalk. It is an imposing, visually appealing and inspiring work that displays Agol’s vision and talent well.

Vaguely reminiscent through shape and stature – it is three metres tall - of Lance Carleton’s Flora Grande from the 2012 show, Agol’s sculpture is distinctively his own. At first glance, it is a tree – a trunk leads up to a veritable tangle of steel pieces curling and curving in multiple directions.

Closer inspection reveals much more though. Agol has created two distinct

I transform from flat to three-dimensional, from flatness to form, opinion to concept. He has done that splendidly. The detail and exuberant colour of the centrepiece contrasts with the monochrome though brilliantly imagined body of ‘Unity’. There is personal statement and philosophical belief expressed here, as in all of Agol’s art.

“I like the idea of balancing the big view with attention to detail. Texture, silhouette or some specific accent can be emphasized to heighten the effect of the whole. The pieces I sculpt are for the viewer, and designed to be in open spaces. Even more importantly,

they should engage – prompt consideration of our relationship with ourselves, those around us and all of us with our Creator.”

longest length on the other side. The metal lengths are rockered and wave like, representing the opened pod. It is a gorgeous design that is incredibly symmetrical, balanced and clean.

As visionary and thought-provoking as ‘Unity’ and the rest of Agol’s sculptures are, they are only one aspect of his art. His photographs often combine the beauty of the female body with textural counterparts like tree roots, water, the tangle of branches or stained glass. The latter is another medium Agol loves to create in, often combining glass with other materials as he has done here.

His glass work takes many forms of expression – leaded, stained, etched and three-dimensional – to create evocative, translucent works like Tribute to Jesters, The Frame and Spirits of Nature. In many installations, he combines photography and base elements (wood, steel, ) to create pieces that are multi-textured and layered, compelling in their conception.

‘Unity’ gives us a small though intriguing taste of Agol’s vision and creative processes. His talent is dazzling, not unlike the glowing, backlit heart of his sculpture on display this year.

Nathan Smith Nathan Smith ‘Seed’ (steel) Nelson artist Nathan Smith’s youthful appearance belies a lot of experience as a metal designer and sculptor. He has been creating lovely works since 2003 and his initial entry for Castlegar Sculpturewalk displays his talent and artistry in spades.

‘Seed’ is simple and elegant. Wonderfully balanced with crisp lines, the sculpture consists of a sphere made up of multiple-sized circles mounted on a short, elaborately detailed stem complete with delicate roots. The stem flowers upright from gradually lengthening curved metal rods; on one side the metal rod is a continuum of the shortest piece, arcing gracefully over the sphere and forming the

Elements from ‘Seed’, a sphere as a centrepiece and the encircling line creating dramatic use of space, are often found in Smith’s most prevalent public installations - sundials. He has created and installed four already: two in Nelson, one in Summerland and another in the Dorothy Harvey Gardens at the Calgary Zoo. That project, commissioned to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Horticultural Society, includes four stunning ‘seasonal’ metal and wood benches, the back of each a metal lacework depicting one of the four seasons. A multi-coloured, sixteen point compass stone design completes the installation spectacularly.

“Sundials have a special significance for me,” Smith says. ‘Each one I’ve created is uniquely designed for the setting, ornate and one-of-a-kind. At the same time, they are also accurate measurements of time passage too, functional and beautiful at the same time.”

All of his sundials are exquisitely fashioned; the installation at Oso Negro Coffeehouse is 6 feet tall and has a wonderfully detailed glass and brass globe as its centrepiece. The sundial created to mark Nelson Waldorf School’s 25th anniversary is smaller and stylistically different but as detailed and as accurate.

Establishing Sunsmith Design Studios in 2006, Smith has expanded his oeuvre steadily. He designs and builds stylish custom gates, fences, railings and shelving that completely enhance and complement the individual setting. He also creates original furniture and furnishings that seamlessly blend form and function through flowing curving lines and creative use of space. “ I named my company quite deliberately,” he says. “The sun or sun symbols are represented often in my work, and that’s appropriate as it’s the source of life for everything. Similarly, my sculpture on display here represents the miracle of life contained in the seed.”

As far as an emphasis on more public sculptures like ‘Seed’ in the future, Smith just smiles. “It was an honour to be chosen to submit, and I value and love public installations. Having said that, I’m pretty busy with the more functional work I’m doing. Besides, I consider every piece I make a piece of art.” They certainly are that, whether bicycle stand or chair, gate or sundial.

On Thursday of last week four super seniors from Rossland decided to shake up their lives and go on a road trip.

The tripe was out of their collective comfort zones but never the less, adventure and daring got them to the age they are and they saw no reason to be different now.

Cookie LeCluse (age 97), Argia Haley (age 93), Tony Campana (age 90) and Wilma Kuntz (age 87) got into Cokkie’s Hummer and headed over the first summit to Big Sheep Creek for a lunch time barbeque at the cabin of Joe Zanussi.

Cookie was the chauffeur but had ready back-up in his passengers as they all still drive and are all very capable.

Statistical mysteries solved and posed by 1921 census

For genealogists, it’s like Christmas in August.

Following a twomonth delay, nearly 200,000 pages from Canada’s 1921 census went online last week, providing a wealth of raw data for family historians to comb.

Under the Statistics Act, census information is closed for 92 years for privacy reasons, but afterward it’s released by Library and Archives Canada.

The census of June 1, 1921, saw an army of 11,700 enumerators record data by hand on nearly 8.8 million people across the country, including ages, birthplac-

es, occupations, and place of residence.

Unlike the 1901 and 1911 censuses, the returns have not yet been indexed, so it can be a bit of a slog to find someone: you can’t search by name so need some idea where they lived.

Even then, not everyone is where you’d expect them.

A cursory browse reveals several anomalies and curiosities for our area: • A Profili family (Eugene, Paulina, and their five children) lived at a place between Tadanac and Birchbank called Newtonia. The derivation is probably just “new town” but where was it?

• Doukhobor com-

munities are enumerated separately. The largest in West Kootenay was Brilliant with over 2,700 residents, followed by Glade at more than 600. Curiously, there’s also a place near Nelson called Quory, presumably a misspelling of Quarry, with 13.

Historian Jon Kalmakoff theorizes this

was a communal settlement on Grohman Creek otherwise known as Skalistoye, which means rocky or craggy in Russian.

Of 30 arable acres, orchards grew on only four, while the rest was barren.

• The Nelson provincial jail is also enumerated separately, and recorded the

names of 23 inmates.

• The census records people otherwise marginalized and omitted from sources such as civic directories and voters list, especially the Chinese.

Nelson’s Chinatown, around Lake and Front streets, had about 130 people — all but two of

daughters Lillian and Helen.

The census was taken two years before the Exclusion Act banned Chinese immigration to Canada.

• Salmo’s Japanese community, which stood at 50 a decade earlier, was down to 11. It consisted of six men...

whom were men, many with wives in China.

8th Annual Community Volunteer Recognition COUNCIL POLICY: VOLUNTEER OF THE CITY In the past, the City used to mail out invitation letters to organizations that generated volunteers, but this process was flawed due to the fact that many individuals and groups for which the City may be unaware, would not have received a much deserved invitation. In 2009, Council adopted a new policy that publicly announces the event as opposed to invitations to organizations.

POLICY: “Council may give recognition to a volunteer or a group of volunteers for service above and beyond of those generally performed in the Community.”

POLICY PROCEDURE: When Council is giving consideration to the recognition to an individual or group, it shall make its deliberations “in camera” and when a decision to give recognition has been made, it shall then be announced by the Mayor at the Annual Community Volunteer Recognition Evening.

CRITERIA:

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS:

• The individual or group should be honoured for its volunteer work in the City of Grand Forks or for volunteer work that has had an impact on the City of Grand Forks; • The individual or group should not have been paid or received any form of financial remuneration for the work or activity for which the volunteer is being considered; • The individual or group should have made a significant commitment to the community to be considered for the recognition; • There is substantial support from the Community through letters of recommendations outlining the volunteerism history and the impact on the community; • A special volunteer recognition may be given after the passing of the individual; • Prior to giving any recognition of volunteer of the year, the City must call for nominations publicly in a Regular Council Meeting and through the City’s Newsletter.

At their Regular Meeting on June 25th, 2013, Council adopted the resolution that publicly announced this year’s volunteer appreciation evening and the call for nominations.

Individuals or groups may nominate another individual, group or organization by obtaining and completing the City of Grand Forks Nomination Form for Exceptional Volunteer Service.

Open Burning Ban in Effect for Southeast Fire District Effective at noon on July 8, all open fires are prohibited within the Southeast Fire Centre’s jurisdiction to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety. The prohibition will remain in place until Sept. 20 or until the public is otherwise notified.

Specifically, prohibited activities include: • the burning of any waste, slash or other materials.

• stubble or grass fires of any size over any area.

• the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, or burning barrels of any size or description.

The prohibition does not restrict campfires that are a half-metre high by a half-metre wide or smaller, and does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

Campfires must not be larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres in size. Anyone lighting a campfire must maintain a fireguard by removing flammable debris from around the campfire area and must have a hand tool or at least eight litres of water available nearby to properly extinguish the fire. Make sure that that the campfire is fully extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before leaving the area for any length of time.

This prohibition covers all BC Parks, Crown and private lands, but does not apply within the boundaries of local governments that have forest fire prevention bylaws and are serviced by a fire department. Please check with civic authorities for any restrictions before lighting a fire. (See below) Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted in court, be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.

Open burning within Grand Forks City limits is prohibited year-round. Small campfires for cooking purposes only may be allowed with a permit.
