Facing another hockey season with no food concession has pushed local regional directors to reverse an earlier decision to keep the facility open to all caterers.

At the Aug. 7 Creston Valley services committee meeting, a unanimous vote directed Creston and District Community Complex staff to advertise inviting proposals that could see all food services in the building provided by one operator.

“We handcuffed the staff when we directed them to only accept proposals to operate the concession, and that hasn’t worked,” said Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks, who chairs the committee.

From page 1 “It’s totally different than drawing or even pen and ink because you’re actually using a machine for it,” he said.

“It’s almost like working with a Dreml tool, except it’s ink and skin.”

But he was recently met with a new challenge: painting a mural in the children’s area — as well as an outdoor logo — at the new Black Bear Books location at 1229 Canyon St. Previously, Skylar had done only one small canvas painting when he was 10 years old. Fortunately, his dad majored in painting, so inspiration was readily available.

“Our walls are filled with his paintings,” he said. “So that was a big help.”

And a little farther from home, he drew on the styles of Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dali and Alphonse Mucha when creating the mural, which features a black bear reading a book while sitting next to a pails of books under a tree bearing pears and cherries.

“I had to get into a different mindset with colours and contrast and stuff to make it work so that it wasn’t bland,” Skylar said.

And bland it isn’t, with bright colours well suited to the children’s play area it overlooks — so much so that owner Paula Carpenter was thrilled with Skylar’s initial design, which ultimately ended up being the final design.

“She loved it and was like, ‘Yeah, you definitely have to do this,’ ” Skylar said.

Skylar worked on the mural from early May through early July, and the project went much faster once the Prince Charles Secondary School student — who enters Grade 10 next month and gets high marks in art class — finished school for the year, giving him more time to paint.

The hard work paid off — it adds a colourful touch to the new bookstore, and gives Skylar a great piece to add to his portfolio.

“This was just a really big learning experience for me, and I’m really happy with how it turned out,” he said.

Food service needed From page 1 “I have been told by people in the food business that they would be interested in bidding for all food services, including catering events held in the Creston Room, but that the concession alone isn’t worth it,” said Coun.

Jerry Schmalz, who represented the Town of Creston at the meeting in the absence of a vacationing Mayor Ron Toyota.

Area B alternate director Penny A.P. Anderson subbed for the absent John Kettle, and Area A director Garry Jackman was not in attendance.

The food services issue came to the forefront again after there were no responses to advertisements to run the concession. After a six-month trial, A Break in Time Caffé gave notice that in would not continue to operate the concession. An illness in the family has made it impossible for them continue the service, complex manager Randy Fediuk reported.

“They did a great job,” said Joe Chirico, RDCKs general manager of community services. “I think the food quality was above and beyond — probably the best of any concession in the Kootenays.”

Before A Break in Time took over the concession, it was sitting unused, with no other vendor taking an interest in its operation. The Creston Valley Thunder Cats junior hockey team sold pop and chips during its games and other arena events.

After extensive renovations to the community complex were complete, directors considered the possibility of having a single operator providing food services throughout the building, but turned it down.

“To be fair, I think the directors wanted to recognize the history of groups that

have traditionally used the Creston Room and provided their own caterer, or even did their own cooking,” Chirico said.

“What we have been doing isn’t working,” Binks said.

“We need to let the staff do their job and find a way to provide food services throughout the building. If there is flack from the public, we’ll just have to take it.”

Committee Briefs •Signe Miller reported that progress has been made in getting support to install an electronic message board on Canyon Street to promote community complex events.

Several user groups have provided letters of support and Toyota has been working with Kal Tire to get approval to install a sign on its property.

No funding is in place to purchase the sign at this time.

•Amanda Cannon, manager of New Life Furniture Centre and Recycling, reported that the facility now accepts more than 1,000 items for recycling. She is working on a proposal that would see volunteers provide recycling information to users of the landfill.

•Alanna Garrett, emergency co-ordinator for Creston and Area A, B and C, reported on the response to the aviation fuel spill at Lemon Creek.

•Town manager Lou Varela and Jesse Willicome reported on youth activities. Varela said the Town of Creston has received a $15,000 Columbia Basin Trust grant to create a report by BC Healthy Communities about how to provide youth services in the Creston Valley. She requested that area directors fund an estimated $4,000 shortfall to complete the report. Binks committed $1,500 from Area C. •Anderson volunteered to work with community complex staff to see if groups or individuals are interested in funding and creating displays to acknowledge the activities and history in the community complex.

•An additional full-time position was approved for the maintenance department of the community complex to help with the additional responsibilities of the expanded facilities, fitness equipment and Rotacrest Hall.

Farm donating portion of cherry sales to food bank

Erickson’s Just-A-Mere Organic Farm, currently in the second year of a transition to becoming certified organic, is donating a portion of its cherry sales to the Creston Valley Gleaners Society food bank.

The farm, owned by Danny and Miranda Turner, grows three kinds of cherries — Skeena, Rainer and Sweetheart — and $5 from the sale of each $45 11-pound box of Sweethearts will go to the food bank, as will some fresh cherries. The couple recently offered the same deal, as well as donating fresh cherries, to raise money for the Edmonton Food Bank.

“They’re very much into acquainting people with their food sources,” said farm manager Margaret Devantier. “In the process of doing so, they make sure growers, distributors and consumer get the most out of it.”

The Turners also own the Organic Box, an Edmonton-based produce delivery service, which sources mainly Canadian organic produce, some from the Creston Valley, including Kootenay Meadows cheese and garlic from Don Kepke and Sons Farm.

Devantier — whose parents bought the Erickson farm in 1970, and sold it to the Turners in 2011 — said that a spring freeze resulted in a light cherry crop, which was picked in less than two weeks.

Hikers find missing senior

Hikers on Goat Mountain found Gordon Hume, 79, around 4 p.m. Aug. 7, after he had been missing for about 24 hours.

“It looked like he tried to take his ATV down a narrow trail, and was ejected from the ATV,” said Creston RCMP Cpl. Monty Taylor.

After he was discovered, Hume was attended by emergency services personnel, who stabilized him and carried him out on a spine board around 6:45 p.m. He was taken straight to Creston Valley Hospital, where

his condition, which included what appeared to be a broken hip, was to be assessed. He was also dehydrated, having spent 24 hours lying in the bush.

Hume had been missing since around 3 p.m. Aug. 6 on Goat Mountain.

“Gordon Hume had overheard a group of youths on Goat Mountain talking about starting a fire during a fire ban, so he travelled up the mountain on his quad to speak with them,” Taylor said earlier in a press release.

Hume, who suffers from minor dementia, did not return, and he was reported missing around 5 p.m. The youths are not believed

to have had anything to do with Hume’s disappearance.

Creston Search and Rescue teams conducted a ground search into the evening, and the Provincial Emergency Program’s Civil Air Search and Rescue Association began an air search at daybreak Aug. 7.

Although Creston RCMP had asked trail users to stay off Goat Mountain until the search was complete (preventing confusion for search teams and dogs), the hikers who found Hume were allowed on the trails after checking in with Creston Search and Rescue.

“This time, it paid off,” said Taylor.

RCMP calls top 100 for first time this summer

Creston RCMP received 107 calls for service from Aug. 5-11, Const. Dave Skretting reported on Monday.

August 5 •A driver fled the scene following a motor vehicle collision on the train tracks on Valleyview Drive. The matter remains under investigation.

•A child was reported to be improperly restrained and on an adult’s lap in a vehicle on Canyon-Lister Road. The vehicle was not located, but RCMP sent a warning letter to the registered owner.

•A group of people on a Samuelson Road property told the owner they would leave, but didn’t, although they were gone when police arrived.

•Two males reportedly consuming liquor on a Highway 21 bridge were not located.

•A van, reportedly parked suspiciously five kilometres east of Kitchener with smashed out windows and no lights, was gone when patrols were made.

•An erratic driver on 25th Avenue South couldn’t be located.

•An internal theft from a business is under investigation.

August 6 •A male, who was reportedly walking nude on Maple Place before stopping behind a mailbox to dress, was not located.

•An impaired driver crossing into Canada at Kingsgate blew a “warn” ona breathalyzer and was dealt with by border officers.

•An officer escorted a cow off the road halfway between Creston and the Kootenay Pass summit.

•A wallet was reported lost in Crawford Bay, but no description was given.

•Three screams were heard in the area of Lower Wynndel and Uri roads.

Extensive patrols were made and no one in distress was located.

•A report from a Crawford Bay resident of three suspicious transactions in a corporate bank account is under investigation.

•A driver is uninjured but his vehicle sustained over $1,000 damage after a single-vehicle accident north of Wynndel. The driver lost control after a bee flew into the cab.

•A pedestrian reported that a vehicle didn’t slow down or attempt to stop while the pedestrian was in a Canyon Street-20th Avenue crosswalk.

•Gunshots were reportedly heard near Elsie Holmes Road.

•A possibly suicidal individual from Creston was located by Grand Forks RCMP and taken for assessment to Boundary Hospital.

•There are no suspects in or witnesses to a hit and run in the Creston Valley Mall parking lot.

August 7 •A vehicle, reportedly seen broken down during the night on Kootenay Pass, was gone by the time it was reported.

• US Customs and Border Protection members reported a suspicious aircraft flying into Canada across the border. The RCMP border enforcement unit followed up, but it didn’t appear to land in the Creston Valley.

•A lost licence plate was reported near Highway 3 and Erickson Road.

•A debit terminal and base were stolen during a break-in to an Erickson greenhouse.

•Speakers, a tackle box and a fishing rod were stolen from a boat at Sanca.

•A quad was reportedly stolen from Wynndel Road between 9 p.m. Aug. 6 and 11 a.m. Aug. 7.

•A male at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Pine Street was reported to be screaming and yelling at mailboxes, and looked like he was trying to dig for something underneath. When RCMP arrived, they learned he was trying to find the key so he could check for his social assistance cheque.

•A change purse is believed to have been accidentally taken from a business, when another customer may have scooped it up with their own bag.

•A man reported that his children were being watched suspiciously by a teenage male at the community complex pool. No offence was committed, but he was also reported to staff.

•Flashing lights reportedly seen on Goat Mountain were connected with the search for Gordon Hume (story on page 3).

•A father and son, who were both in the area picking cherries, became separated when the son moved to a different camp.

•After a driver reported a collision in Porthill, Idaho, the driver was referred to U.S. authorities.

•Shots were heard south of 32nd Street in Erickson. It was determined that they came from Crown land, and may have been related to open hunting seasons, but nothing out of the ordinary was noted.

•A diner reported seeing U.S. fugitive James Dimaggio (a double-murder suspect shot and killed by Idaho police on Saturday) at a Highway 3A restaurant, but the description didn’t match when patrols were made.

•People acting suspiciously at the back door of an Erickson business were not located.

August 8 •There are no suspects in or witnesses to a report that a car was jacked up and its tire stolen overnight.

•A motorcycle rider was slightly injured in a collision with a car in the Rotacrest Hall parking lot.

•A Creston resident made three money transfers to a caller from India who was “having trouble”. Once the money is sent, said Skretting, it is nearly impossible to trace it.

“If you don’t know who it is, don’t send any money,” he said.

•When a semi truck made a turn, its tire threw a rock, causing significant damage to the windshield of the vehicle behind.

•A Creston resident reported receiving harassing phone calls from a collection agency.

•An individual on Sixth Avenue was found to be OK after RCMP made a well-being check.

•A male entered a relative’s property on Highway 3 and took food without permission.

He acknowledged to RCMP that it was wrong, and said he won’t do it again.

•A business accepted payment by credit card over the phone for items, and although the payment initially went through, it is now disputed and appears to have been made with a stolen card. The incident is still under investigation.

•A male reported that a Subaru with yellow rims was passing unsafely heading toward Creston from the west. Patrols did not locate the vehicle.

•Three hundred vehicles were stopped at a check stop, which resulted in three violation tickets and one marijuana seizure.

•Police peacefully mediated a dispute between Canyon-Lister Road neighbours.

August 9 •A white Ford F-150 hit a Mazda minivan, but no licence plate number was obtained from the suspect truck, so members on patrol were unable to locate it. The matter is under investigation.

•The man reported yelling at a mailbox on Aug. 7 made threats at the Service BC office, but the threats were not deemed serious, and the staff was satisfied with the RCMP attending to deal with it.

•A black men’s wallet was found at Gleaners and turned over to the detachment.

•RCMP advised a resident to ignore a letter from Spain stating they had inherited $10.5 million.

From page 4 •No injuries were reported in a single-vehicle accident on Helen Street that resulted in significant damage to both vehicles.

•An Erickson Road orchard owner reported an employee upset over unpaid wages might have damaged a sign. The mischief couldn’t be proven, and the employee, who didn’t think he had been paid enough, was referred to the Labour Relations Board.

•An elderly woman reportedly walking, looking dazed and confused, on Highway 21 was not located.

•A vehicle reportedly abandoned for two days on Highway 3 15 kilometres west of Creston, was gone when RCMP attended the scene.

•A woman in the 4800 block of Highway 3A called police when several people showed up at her door in the evening and said a bear was chasing them. She didn’t let them in, but called the police, who found the group — hopeful fruit pickers unable to find work here — hitchhiking back to Toronto. They had heard a bear, and decided to travel by day.

•Two suspicious people were reported near mailboxes at the south end of 20th Avenue.

August 10 •When police attended a disturbance in Lister, members found two intoxicated people, one of whom was not supposed to be with the other, and was taken back to the detachment.

•An erratic driver was seen on Northwest Boulevard in a silver Oldsmobile Olero.

•Three motorcycles with Alberta licence plates were reported passing unsafely and speeding near Duck Lake, but were not located.

•A custom crowbar was stolen from a residence on Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road.

•When RCMP traced an abandoned 911 call from 26th Avenue North, no problems were found.

•Overwaitea Foods reported a customer had stolen food and had been banned from the store.

The report was made for information only, as the store didn’t want to proceed with charges.

•A male wearing a pink skirt and reportedly flashing people on Canyon Street and 14th Avenue was not located.

•A heavily intoxicated male walking in South Creston was not located.

•The RCMP rendered assistance to somebody wishing assistance with a family court order.

•When RCMP pulled over a vehicle for an impaired driving check, the driver was highly intoxicated and became combative, resisting arrest, and a large group who appeared to be friends became engaged. The driver was pulled away by the group, which threw objects at police, but was eventually located and taken to cells, arrested for refusing a breathalyzer and resisting arrest.

•Dogs barking in Wynndel had stopped by the time police finished with group above.

•An intoxicated male, known to police, was reported on Canyon Street, Cook Street and Eighth Avenue, but was not located.

August 11 •No damage was found at Millennium Park after a caller reported a group making noise and possibly causing damage. The group left when told the park was closed.

•With no descriptions or licence plate number given, police could not locate vehicles reportedly doing burnouts in the 3900 block of Highway 3.

•No entry appeared to be gained through a broken window on Elm Street.

•RCMP contacted a driver, who was reportedly driving erratically in Wynndel, by phone, but no action was taken when stories between the complainant and driver conflicted.

•An aftermarket taillight was taken off a vehicle on Dugan Street, but there are no suspects or witnesses.

•In a joint investigation with Conservation Officer Service, police are looking into the discovery of a cow and calf slaughtered on Blazed Creek Forest Service Road. The killing looked professionally done, and RCMP are trying to determine if it was by the owner or a poacher.

•An intoxicated male on Highway 3 in Erickson was not located.

Over 700 Fortis BC customers in the Creston Valley went without power for a time last week, following a windstorm that started around 11 p.m. July 6.

North of Creston, power was out in Wynndel and Lakeview, and in intermittent places along Highway 3A, in Kuskanook, Destiny Bay, Sanca, Twin Bays and Lockhart, after the windstorm broke poles and downed power lines.

That outage affected about 520 customers, who had power restored around 11 p.m. July 7.

The crews working north of Creston were joined that afternoon by crews that had been fixing a West Creston power outage that occurred midmorning, affecting 220 homes on West Creston, Cedar Hill, Reclamation, Corn Creek, Smith, Simmons and Balsam roads.

The controversy swirling around the valley about the Regional District of Central Kootenay proposal to fund the Pet Adoption and Welfare Society as a tax service is largely based on a lack of consensus. Not on the funding issue itself or even the approval process, but on what exactly democracy means, as far as I can see.

And that’s an argument that isn’t going to be resolved.

Period.

I know there are people who simply don’t want a nickel of their tax dollars going to PAWS or any other support for pets of any kind. It’s their right, but they should also be aware that quite likely an equal or greater portion of the population is in favour.

I have no doubt that the latter observation is part of the reason why the directors of areas B and C and the Town of Creston chose to propose funding part of PAWS operational costs by taxation. They hear, every day, about animal complaints and PAWS is an organization that can help alleviate some of the problems.

Directors have also heard regular presentations from PAWS volunteers about the nature of their work and of the difficulty in sustaining operations almost entirely through fundraising. Volunteers in almost every organization sign on because they have an interest in what the organization does, not because they want to spend time fundraising.

As letters to the editor in last week’s Advance correctly point out, the alternate approval process is not a construct of local directors or of the RDCK. It is described in the province’s Community Charter, the legislation that describes how

That said, I sought roles where I can work with others on putting those ideas into action and won the support of my colleagues to do so.

Being able to represent our region is a true honour enriched by being able to contribute to the legislative assembly, the NDP caucus and our democracy. Whether in Victoria, at home or in other parts of our province, the work is rewarding.

Pay defeats purpose of volunteering To the Editor: To volunteer is “to offer to give or do,” according to my Funk & Wagnalls dictionary. The Creston Valley is renowned as having one of the largest numbers of volunteers per capita in the province.

And now someone has decided that volunteers at one of our non-profit establishment should be paid! Volunteering comes from the heart, not the wallet.

Both Harry and I have given thousands of volunteers hours during our lifetimes (and still give freely of whatever talents and time that we have) without a single thought of payment, other than the warm glow we feel from helping others, both two-legged and four.

Most non-profit organizations recognize their volunteers in one way or another — thank you display ads in the Advance, thank you dinners for all volunteers two or three times a year, and/ or a personal thank you for the “extras” for which volunteers are well known.

Has this individual thought of the negative results of paying volunteers?

This would mean losing the incentive of giving and replacing it with paying

income tax and all the other deductions of an employee. Who would pick up the tab? The town? Probably. The province? Highly unlikely! But an even more important result would be taking away the joy and love of giving of ourselves to our community.

Money has become increasingly important — the ads that say “all you want” not need, the crimes worldwide that are committed to line the pockets of the criminals. Are we really going to add to these with paying volunteers?

Remember, my friends, that “the root of all evil is the love of money.” Nuff said!

Congrats to community complex staff To the Editor: This letter is to congratulate the Creston and District Community Complex management and staff on their excellent service to our community.

There is no true measurement of how your programs, fitness and aquatics have benefitted the Creston area population.

But I see a very busy recreational facility — an excellent sign! I see lots of eager retirees showing up regularly for exercises, at the gym or at aquafit.

Some of us have made it our “job” to get fit — and it has been a fun job with the help of our coaches! I see persons of all ages and capabilities enjoying the programs offered.

Don’t give tax dollars to PAWS To the Editor: Do you wish to be taxed to pay for somebody’s pet project, in this case the Pet Adoption and Welfare Society? This is what the Regional District of Central Kootenay has planned.

Unless we can get 10 per cent of eligible voters (over 980) to go to the RDCK office and sign the elector response form before Sept. 9, we will be billed on our taxes starting next year.

This is a reverse referendum, and amounts to taxation by committee.

Library adds value to community

Google “library value calculator” and you will find a neat little tool that provides one perspective on the value of the public library — namely, how much you would have to spend to purchase on your own products and services you currently receive for free from the library.

In the case of my family of three, the total came out to over $4,000/year (we make good use of the picture book section of the library). Of course, if we didn’t have access to the library, we would not actually spend that amount on new books. Like many in this community, we would simply go without.

As one of the few “socialist” institutions — along with public schools, public healthcare, and emergency services — in a largely capitalist economy, it is incumbent on public libraries to continually prove our value in the marketplace. But how do we put a dollar value on baby time programs, one-on-one computer help, public meeting space, local art displays and all of the other services and products that the library provides?

In-depth studies estimate that the economic return on investment for public libraries is as much as $10 for every dollar invested. The fact is that a strong public library makes a community a more desirable place to live and invest, and adds value far greater than the tax dollars required to fund it.

Aaron Francis One way we do this is through our commitment to buy local, wherever possible. Our computers were purchased through Pro-to-Call, who gave us a great deal on desktop PCs. Our new children’s area shelving was built by Rick at RCW Woodcraft cabinets.

Renovations to our washroom facilities are being completed by Tratech Mechanical. We have accounts at Bahamas General Store, Pyramid Building Supplies, Creston Card and Stationery, and a number of other local businesses.

Recently, we have started a new initiative to help support our local economy. Previously, tourists, pickers and other short-term guests were required to purchase a library card in order to access borrowing services at the library.

Our new visitor cards are good for one month, allow visitors to borrow two items at a time and, best of all, they are free. For longer-term visitors, we still offer one-year non-resident cards at a cost equivalent to what residents pay in taxes toward the library.

Tourism and agriculture are important to our local economy, and offering free visitor cards is one small way that we can welcome the tourists and workers who make our community home during the summer.

What else can we do to support local businesses? The Nelson Public Library has been extremely innovative in developing fundraising partnerships with local businesses. Last year, they produced a Read All Night blend of coffee in partnership with Oso Negro. And even more cool, in partnership with Nelson Chocofellar, they created a series of literary-themed chocolate bars, with names like Pride and Pecans, In the Skin of a Raisin and Fifty Shades of Chocolate, among others.

Fitness still a priority while pool is shut down

Wow, it’s the middle of August already and you are probably like the rest of us, wondering where the heck the summer went. While the traditional thought of summer is July and August, revolving around the school calendar,

luckily our valley has a pretty extensive shoulder season of three or four months either side of those dates, as well as a winter that barely made it into the minus double digits, which is pretty darn acceptable. It’s more of a societal thing, I guess: the build up to school starting again, the wave of back-to-school advertising, including the increase in logging to be able to produce even more flyers for your mailbox, and finally our annual pool shutdown at the end of August.

Pool shutdown, you say? What’s that all about? Basically, from Aug. 31-Sept. 13, the pool area is closed and all three of the pools are drained, followed by a pretty intense inspection of all the tiles and fixtures that normally are submerged. We also examine all the lighting, both underwater and overhead, and make any necessary repairs or adjustments.

Then the cleaning begins — all the pool basins are scrubbed and disinfected to the point where you could probably do surgery in there should the need arise. We also target all fixtures and walls for cleaning, and focus on scrubbing the deck all the way around and into all the change rooms, which also get an intense makeover.

We all had at least one dream about that when we were kids, but many of us couldn’t realize that dream for one reason or another.

My dream was to be a neurosurgeon (a brain surgeon, as it was then termed). But our family was poor, and my six older brothers had drained the family purse by the time I came on the scene.

So I took the typing and bookkeeping subjects available in high school in order to earn my keep.

While secretarial work was OK, and it did put food on the table, it really wasn't’ challenging enough. Besides, it meant working with office stuff instead of with people — and their brains!

Over the years, the printing industry became computerized, and IBM (the London, Ont., branch) asked me to learn, and then demonstrate for their potential clients, the first computerized typesetting equipment in Canada. At last, a challenge!

What you see when you come back after shutdown realistically doesn’t look much different because we are pretty diligent with dayto-day cleaning and maintenance, but what you don’t see is the background stuff like inspection and rebuilding of pumps, filters and equipment where necessary in the mechanical room. We are hoping to have received a batch of replacement keys and wrist loops for the change room lockers; we have changed up the monitoring and ordering process so we can keep downtime to a minimum (thanks for your comment cards). Ultimately, since we strove for a quality job on the design and construction of your community complex, it pays off in the long run in maintenance and operating costs; at this point in the life cycle, we typically don’t have anything major required.

So, what to do when the pool is closed? You don’t get off that easy — when you check your fall leisure guide, which will land in your mailbox the week of Aug. 19, turn to page 13, which shows all the new or introductory programs we have set up to keep you in crack shape during the two weeks you are moistureless. Plus, if you are sharp-sighted, you will see that during those couple weeks, it is two-for-one entry, so bring a friend for free (or if you are like me, make the friend pay and you get in for free). Either way, we want to remind those who usually swim that there is life on dry land, and we also want to inspire you to bring someone else who hasn’t seen the place to experience it!

One final note is, if you are feeling hot and sweaty, why not come out for a bit of public skating to cool down? The ice will be open Aug. 19, 21, 25 and 29 from 2-4 p.m. It’s probably the only time of year you could walk in with flip-flops, then strap on some skates to glide gracefully over the ice. See you there!

This led to a job with a printing firm, and from there to my opening and running the new typesetting department at the University of Western Ontario. However, after the establishment of this department, together with the establishment of the first onsite typesetting of the university calendar, the whole thing became rather uninteresting. The challenge was gone.

Next came a move with my kids and dog to the West, and a job offer to set up and run the printing department at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts. Another challenge! This kept me happily occupied for a couple of years, until the work became a bit stale — another challenge gone.

Let’s fast-forward to the day I woke up and remembered brain surgery! No, I didn’t follow through with the dream, but I did begin to look at its various aspects, eventually coming up with stress management as a possible goal. After all, I’d had plenty of stress in my life, and so should be able to empathize with others.

A lot of study and many seminars later, my first business cards were printed — “Stress Management Consultant”. When a friend in Alberta mental health saw it, he said, “For Pete’s sake, Mary, you’re a therapist! Call yourself a therapist!”

So, there began my taking a piece of my childhood dream, working with the brain, and turning it into a reality. At last, doing something I love, complete with the ever-present challenges that I seem to need.

It all boils down to one thing — follow your dream or whatever segment thereof that feels right. It’s never too late and we’re never too old to become what we wanted to be when we grew up.

Five Wave swimmers earn medals in Colville CRESTON WAVE SWIM CLUB

The Creston Wave Swim Club headed with 19 swimmers to the annual international meet held in Colville, Wash., on July 6/7.

Ada Browne continued to improve throughout the season, taking off two seconds in her 100-metre breaststroke, placing her sixth for Div. 6 girls.

Natasha Hopkins took off over eight seconds in her 50-metre freestyle for a fast time of 1:09.65 seconds.

Caytlyn Luke blew the crowd away when she improved by nearly 20 seconds in her 100metre individual medley and by 15 seconds in her Div. 4 girls 50-metre backstroke.

Delaney Mackinlay flew through the water in her novice 25-metre butterfly, improving by 14.13 seconds. Her sister, Madisyn Mackinlay, motored through the water, obtaining a time of 37.71 in the Div. 3 girls 50-metre backstroke. Niki Mackinlay got two best times

of nearly 10 seconds each in her Div. 1 girls 100-metre freestyle and 50-metre freestyle.

Kylee Pemberton took off 7.75 seconds in the Div. 4 girls 200-metre individual medley, placing her in sixth.

Div. 2 boy Hayden Persad broke the one-minute mark in his 50-metre freestyle with a time of 57.61 seconds. His brother, Isaiah Persad, broke the minute mark in his 50-metre butterfly with a time of 59.56 seconds, placing him in the top 10 for Div. 3 boys.

Nadine Persad kicked hard to the finish with a time of 1:38.78 in her Div. 1 girls 50-metre freestyle.

Jeffrey Roelofse smashed over five seconds off of his 100metre freestyle for a time of 2:07.02 seconds.

Sierra Simpson got two best times in her 100-metre individual medley and 50-metre butterfly, placing her third for the Div. 3 girls in both races.

Callum Ziefflie took off an insane 25.82 seconds for a time of 42.79 seconds in the 25-metre

freestyle, placing him second for novice boys.

Medal winners in Colville included coach Monique Ares who improved in her 100- and 200-metre individual medleys and 100-metre freestyle, and took home the women’s Div. 8 bronze medal.

Carter Pelly obtained best times in four of her races and placed first in all six, earning the Div. 3 girls gold medal.

Pelly also took on the “guts and glory” 400-metre individual medley race, representing the Creston Wave Swim Club, placing third out of eight clubs.

Emily Simpson took off over two seconds in her 100-metre individual medley, placing her first. She also took home the Div. 5 girls gold medal.

Kieran Simpson swam hard, placing first in the 50- and 100metre breaststroke, as well as the 200-metre individual medley, earning him a gold medal.

Coach Kevin Woykin raced fast, placing first in the 50-metre butterfly, and took home the Div. 8 men’s aggregate silver medal.

Chocolates put Kootenay spin on South American tradition fessional chocolatier, and, after a firefighting contract was completed, getting help from Community Futures to start Ambrosia Artisan Chocolates in 2011.

After a few years in the Kootenays and the better part of two years at the Yasodhara Ashram, Maureen Kalibri wasn’t sure what to do.

The former conservation biologist came to the Kootenays seven years ago — her work dealing with songbirds and their habitat — and wound up at the ashram between contracts. And when the time came to chart a new course, a dream pointed her in the right direction.

“I genuinely had a dream where I was making bee pollen chocolate truffles,” the St. Albert, Alta., native said.

That led to a three-month online course to become a pro-

sharing the healing properties that cacao holds and experiencing it’s power.”

The chocolate she uses comes from organic fair-trade cacao beans from Venezuela and Colombia, the latter of which she said isn’t known for chocolate, but is up and coming in the industry.

Kalibri described her connection to the chocolate as “heart-centred.”

“I know chocolate through the experiences of people and cultures,” she said. “I’ve been to South America quite a bit before, so I have that connection.”

Creating the chocolate bars she offers has allowed her to use her imagination as she combines flavours, colours and textures in unexpected ways.

“They’re all original,” she said. “I haven’t looked at a book or tried anything anyone else does.”

There are just over two weeks left in the inaugural Kootenay Lake Art Connection, which features artists along Kootenay Lake’s East Shore.

Emerald Eastcliff Gallery owner Geri Gomola started the driving tour, which runs through Sept. 3, when she discovered that there would be no Artwalk this year. Artists from Wynndel to Riondel — with the exception of Erickson’s Laura Leeder — were quick to sign on, and 24 artists/ venues are highlighted in the KLAC brochure.

Among them are a few whose work has either never been shown or haven’t been part of an art tour. One of those, Jennifer Moore, is showing her paintings, which range from representational to semi-abstract, at the Junction Hub Pub and Grill in Crawford Bay. “She’s never exhibited any of her paintings before,” said Gomola. “She’s been sort of a closet painter.”

Gray Creek’s Sacred Journey displays the painting, photography and creative writing of Emily Carr University of Art and Design graduate Charlotte Erlandsson; and in Crawford bay, newcomers Susan Snead (recycled paper art) and Jade Ehrler (inspirational paintings) are on display at, respectively, Wedgewood Manor B&B and Kokanee Chalets.

And a large metal dragonfly by Neils Elris is easy to spot on the hill across Highway 3A from the Lakeview Store.

“That’s like a landmark,” said Gomola.

With a visit to any of the 24 stops, visitors can have their brochure initialled by the proprietors or staff, and once they collect 10 initials, they can be entered in a Sept. 3 closing day draw

From page 12 The Mayan Tradition, for example, combines chocolate with spice, as the Mayans did when drinking ceremonial cacao. The Ambrosia bar takes it a step further, with the addition of purple corn to freshly ground black pepper and cinnamon.

Inspired by the power of rose quartz, the Crystal Rose incorporates some unexpected ingredients — the 61 per cent dark chocolate is infused with high quality rose oil and Bolivian rose salt.

Then there’s Radiance, which combines green and reds — wild raspberries, rooibos tea and peppermint — and was planned as a Christmas-season bar but was too popular to limit to the holidays.

“It’s been one of the most popular,” said Kalibri.

Ingredients in other bars include cardamom and coconut (Calliope), and blueberries, goji and açai berries, pumpkin seeds and hemp hearts (ColibriBerry).

Seasonally, Kalibri also makes truffles, with flavours including gingerbread, lavender-fennel, maple nut and raspberry espresso, along with whatever creation comes to mind.

“That’s where new things can come through,” she said, but noted that not all of her ideas pan out (case in point: the avocado-cream cheese truffle).

And if the bars and truffles weren’t enough, Kalibri has also created Nectar, a drink mix made of chocolate powder and shavings, and Ambrosia Beans, which are nibs that come

While driving on the tour, art lovers will have a chance to see Gomola’s work twice, at both her Emerald Eastcliff Gallery and at the historic Gray Creek Store. The former real estate agent has been painting since she was 10, and now works with a range of media — her gallery offers raku, paintings and repurposed items as jewelry.

But there’s so much more to see, and she’s already looking forward to putting together next year’s Kootenay Lake Art Connection.

“My goal is that people will stop all the way to the ferry landing,” she said.

George Kusiak passed away August 5, 2013 at the Creston Valley Hospital due to a stroke, at the age of 89 years.

George was born to Olga and Stefan Kusiak on April 24, 1924 at Kzaza, Ukraine, where he received his formal education.

George Áed the Ukraine at the age of 17 for Germany, where he spent 10 years and met the love of his life Magdelena Eisele. The couple married and started the family with Ludwig, Klaus and Gerti before immigrating to Canada in 1951, settling in Winnipeg.

The family continued to grow with the addition of Monica, Irene and John. He worked as a mechanic's helper and in the construction trade. In 1964, he moved the family to Erickson, rounding the family off with Linda. He continued in the construction trade, starting his own company after several years.

George loved Àshing, planting the garden, winemaking and enjoyed the Royal Canadian Legion Br#29.

He was predeceased by his wife Mary Magdelena, daughter Gerti and son Klaus.

George will sadly missed by his sons Ludwig and John; daughters Monica, Irene and Linda; grandchildren Terri, Nadine, Serena; and great-grandchildren Sasha, Lance, Giles, Lincoln, Markis and Serena.

The Funeral Mass was held on Monday August 12, 2013 at 11:00 am from the Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Tom Kakkaniyil celebrant.

Harley Leroy Edeburn was born April 25, 1936. He passed away July 16, 2013 at 77 years of age.

He was predeceased by his parents Shirley and Oren Edeburn, and his sister Morna Bushaw.

He is survived by son Benjamin Edeburn (Grand Forks, BC); daughter Loretta Huscroft (Creston, BC); two grandsons, Colten Huscroft (Creston, BC) and Jordan Huscroft (Vancouver, BC); son Kent Edeburn (Edmonton, AB); daughter Sophie Edeburn (Calgary, AB); brother Lorne Edeburn and wife Claire (Salmo BC); brother Brian Edeburn and wife Bonnie (Cranbrook, BC); sister Tammy Gutziet (Revelstoke, BC). He is also survived by his fourth wife, Laurie Edeburn (Grand Forks, BC).

An Interment of Ashes will be held in Ashmont, AB in 2014.

Walter Luscher June 21, 1928 ~ August 9, 2013

Walter Luscher passed away at Creston Valley Hospital on August 9, 2013 and was reunited with his sweetheart, Mae. Walter was born June 21, 1928 in Muhen, Aargau, Switzerland to Adolf Luscher and Freida Bertha Baumann. Following his immigration to Canada in 1948, Walter joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served a mission to Germany.

While on his mission, he met the love of his life, Mae Lucille Bressler. Walter and Mae married in the Idaho Falls, Idaho temple and settled in Cardston, Alberta, later moving to Salmo, then Creston, BC. Over the course of his life, Walter engaged in many ventures including: farm hand, lumberjack, truck driver, store owner, orchard manager and his greatest passion, his farm. He has always been involved in church and community with a special love for Boy Scouts. The way he lived his life e[empliÀed his faithfulness and devotion to the Lord which inspired many.

Walter is survived by his son Tim (Janell) of South Jordan, Utah, (grandchildren Ashley, Whitney, Heidi); daughter-in-law Casey Luscher (partner Tim Einboden), (grandchildren Joshua, Cheyenne, Brody and Bram); and sister Trudi (Luscher) Mathys of Switzerland.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, wife Mae and son John.

Funeral Services will be held at 11am Saturday August 24, 2013 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1010 - 36 Avenue North, Creston, BC. At 10am a viewing will be held at the same location.

Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erickson, BC. The family extends their appreciation to all who have helped Walter over the years with farm projects and health concerns.

Louis Hubl passed away at his Swan Valley Lodge residence on August 9, 2013 at the age of 94 years.

Louis Hubl was born to Julia and Louis Hubl at Bowell, Alberta on February 24, 1919 and received his education at Eckville, Alberta.

He married Lucy Negraeff in Creston on April 6, 1950. He had numerous employment opportunities such working in the orchards, mechanic at Brennan’s garage and was employed at the Creston School District #86 as a bus driver. One of his hobbies was À[ing and rebuilding old tractors and lawn mowers.

He was a jack-of-all-trades, constructed the family home and Louis enjoyed Àshing the many lakes and streams of the Creston Valley.

He was predeceased by his wife Lucy and eight brothers and sisters.

Louis will be dearly missed by his son Tom and daughter Linda; sister Mary and numerous nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 11:00 am from the Glad Tidings Pentecostal Church with Pastor Steve Schneider ofÀciating.

No Island bringing unique sound back to Creston SUBMITTED

No Island has developed their own special flavour of rock that blends inspiration from the timeless sounds of the ’70s with the contemporary sounds of indie rock and the technical prowess developed during years of music studies at Capilano University.

No Island — which plays Aug. 22 at the Snoring Sasquatch — has taken their love of innovative classic rock and channelled it into an exciting direction that is equal parts comfortably familiar and refreshingly new.

With well-crafted original songs and a unique sound complemented by keyboards and saxophone, No Island’s catchy, powerful and sophisticated approach bridges the gap between genres and generations.

“Bursting with energy and good vibrations ... the group flexes their musical muscle to create a welldefined sound that stretches across generational boundaries,” said Steve Jessel in the Invermere Valley Echo.

No Island offers something different that appeals to a wide and

varied audience, and since 2009 has been delivering an exciting and memorable show to sold-out clubs and venues in the Vancouver area, as well as local festivals and private events, never failing to draw in a crowd and keep them entertained.

Growing up, the five members of No Island all heeded Bob Seger’s advice: They took those old records off the shelf, and they sat and listened to them. The result, a decade or so later, is a new brand of rock that blurs the lines between genres and generations.

Hippies have become hipsters, disco has given way to techno, and Woodstock lives on in Coachella, but through 40 years of cultural evolution, that old-time rock and roll has stood the test of time. No Island strives to honour that tradition and sing its praises through their own unique voice.

Funky bass lines punch their way through a thunder of drums while vintage keyboards and ferocious guitars lay a foundation for dual vocals, soaring harmonies and scorching saxophone. From small-town watering holes to downtown clubs, No Island’s energetic live show never fails to fill a dance floor or bring a crowd to its feet.

Since forming in 2009, the band has found both residence and inspiration in Vancouver’s vibrant music scene. A desire to blend the forward-thinking creativity of today’s indie rock with the timeless appeal of yesterday has kept No Island’s sound focused and their vision strong.

The band released their debut album, Sign of the Times, in March 2011. After touring western Canada in the summer of 2012, No Island released their follow-up CD, The Waiting Game, in December 2012.

The Rio Samaya Band is friends with the Boom Booms, who have highly recommended the Snoring Sasquatch and all their loyal fans in Creston to this band, which will play on Aug. 24.

“Their gypsy vibe and troubadour style will invite you to relax and remember old times,” said one reviewer. “Expect an evening filled with original tunes including rhumbas, reggae and rocky rhythms from around the world.

Their spontaneity will be contagious and you will be smiling all the way home after the show.”

Born in San Jorge, Argentina, Pancho wrote poems from a young age. He moved to Europe to follow his dreams of playing the guitar and sharing his songs with the world. After touring in many countries, he became a troubadour-style musician in the 1980s in Sweden.

Playing with gypsies in the south of France, he learned rumbas and flamenco. His compositions reflect these influences of flamenco and other folk rhythms. After years of exchange with other musicians, his original music has a wide diversity of styles.

Sal, who was born in England and raised in Canada, met Pancho in Cuzco, Peru, and from then on, together as a family and musical duo, they have established a name for themselves. Sal compliments the music with her vocals, accordion, shakers, chachas, bombo and guitar. They have a unique poetic style of translating simultaneously from Spanish to English.

They created the Rio Samaya Band with an idea to tour the world like a duo and build up the band, joining with local musicians. The band has already debuted with incredibly talented musicians in Beijing, Tunisia and in their hometown, Vancouver.

Footlighters holding auditions for local play FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY

With its 19th season’s first production — Headed South from the Great White North, which ran last month — now finished, Footlighters Theatre Society is preparing for the next show, Almost Golden, with auditions at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Snoring Sasquatch.

The play, locally written by Suzanne Chubb and Jason Smith, focuses on a family gathering for a weekend to celebrate an important anniversary for retirees Marvin and Hazel Schooling. What should be a pleasant weekend turns mildly chaotic when family members’ secrets are revealed over the course of the comedy-drama.

“It’s a great ‘slice of life’ kind of story,” said director Brian Lawrence. “The script really captures family dynamics, both dramatic and humorous, that I found to be all too familiar.”

There are 12 characters in Almost Golden, ranging from teenagers to seniors: •Marvin Schooling, a retired miner, and Hazel Schooling, his wife; •their son, Steven, and his wife, Rachel, business professionals from the big city in their late 30s or early 40s, and their 16-year-old daughter, Tiffany; •Marta, Marvin and Hazel’s daughter, and Andy McLucky, restaurateurs in their 40s, and their 15-year-old son, Sam; •Chad Harvey, Rachel’s secretary, in his mid20s; •Dave Murphy, about 50, a visitor to the Schooling home; •Maude Edison-Stapleton-Gilmore, in her 50s or 60s, manager of Cedar Park Retirement Resort; and •Oscar, a financial planner in his late 50s or early 60s.

The production runs Dec. 5-7, and marks the fifth locally written production the troupe has presented, following Barging Down the Nile and Jack and the Beanstalk in 2007, the one-act No More Tomorrows in 2010, and Aladdin in 2011. At least one more is on the horizon, with Cinderella slated for the fall of 2014.

“Our goals go beyond simply putting on shows,” said Lawrence, who is also the society’s president. “We want to encourage people in all areas of production, from working backstage to, in this case, writing. We didn’t hesitate to say yes when we were approached to produce Almost Golden.”

In the case of Almost Golden, the production will go a step further. Footlighters has committed to hosting Centre Stage, Theatre BC’s Kootenay Zone competition, in late May 2014, and will enter Almost Golden to compete

against other regional plays — with the hope of taking the play to Kamloops for the provincial festival that summer.

“After the December run, we’ll have an opportunity to fine tune the play, if necessary, before we start rehearsing it again for the festival,” said Lawrence. “Plays often change in

the early stages of their development, and it will be interesting to see how it develops between now and the spring.”
