Show-and-shine honours slain Surrey man

By Sheila Reynolds Since the time he had his first Hot Wheels toy as a child, Bradley McPherson had a passion for cars.

As he grew, he’d often tinker with engines with his dad, and when he got older, would regularly go to car shows to ogle other people’s rides. Trucks, low-riders, motorcycles, hot rods – he loved them all.

Of course, he owned a series of his own vehicles as well.

The last was a customized 1980 GMC Chevy shortbox truck.

“He’s always had cars, trucks… he was always working on them just as a hobby,” said his mom, Susan Simning.

“If you showed up, he would detail the nines out of your car without you even asking.”

Her son’s weakness for wheels made the theme for an upcoming memorial fundraiser in McPherson’s name an easy choice.

“Like rubber to asphalt, you left your mark…” reads the flyer promoting the Aug. 24 show-and-shine event in Cloverdale.

Help pack the police car If you’re looking for a way to help seniors, you may wish to make note of a food drive spearheaded by the Surrey RCMP this week.

The community is invited to help “Pack the Police Car,” a four-day food drive and fundraiser at various PriceSmart and Save-on-Foods in Cloverdale and Surrey, running Aug. 14 to 17.

Shoppers are encouraged to donate nutritious, non-perishable food items in support of the Surrey Food Bank’s new 65 plus Seniors Distribution Program.

Surrey RCMP members and a patrol car will be accepting food and cash donations to help families in need this summer.

Later this week they’re heading to Cloverdale and Clayton.

On Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., the cruiser will be at PriceSmart Foods at 17745 64 Avenue. Saturday, the appeal moves to PriceSmart

Foods at 18710 Fraser Highway from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The top five food items currently in highest demand for the new program are: canned fish or meat, meals in tins, canned fruit and vegetables, whole grain rice or pasta, and pasta sauces.

The program provides a depot where seniors can collect food in a respectful, non-rushed, environment. Low-sodium and high-protein food choices will be available.

Every second Wednesday afternoon seniors living in Surrey and North Delta can avoid exhausting line-ups during a seniors-only distribution time.

Between 250 and 300 households use the Surrey Food Bank daily which translates into 11,000 people a month.

Simning said the show-and-shine will have everything McPherson would have wanted, welcoming cars, trucks and motorbikes ($20 per vehicle, passengers $5 each, $5 walk-ins), and prizes will be awarded for best of show, best custom, and people’s choice.

There will also be live entertainment, a beer garden, silent auction and 50/50 draw. Representatives from BC Victim Services, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, and Crime Stoppers have also been invited.

Proceeds from the all-day fundraiser will go toward scholarships for students at two schools – North Delta Secondary, where McPherson graduated, and Clayton Heights Secondary, where his sister is graduating next June.

Simning said because her son had ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), the scholarships will go to kids with similar learning needs.

“We first got him diagnosed when he was three-and-a-half because he wasn’t speaking well,” Simning recalled.

“He struggled all through school.”

But McPherson didn’t let it hold him back from doing anything, his mom said.

“He made it work and he never gave up. He just kept on going and kept on going. He never let it crush him

Simning said if her son could see the event being organized in his honour, he’d be ecstatic.

“I think he’s probably just blown away,” she said. “I’m sure he’s amazed.”

The scholarship for ADHD students, she said, would also mean the world to him.

“For sure, because he knows – he struggled so many years.

“He loves kids. For him to know that it’s going to some other kids that made it all the way to grad, he’d love it.”

Eating contests are an affront to the world’s starving people To the editor; Each year 1,000,000 children starve to death in this world and tens of millions go to bed hungry every night. What are we in this so-called land of plenty doing to help alleviate this tragic circumstance? For virtually every national or provincial holiday a community or some corporation sponsors what is referred to as an eating contest.

Participants compete to see who can stuff the most food into themselves for some type of a champions cup and or monetary gain.

The type of food takes many forms: hot dogs, pizza, watermelon,cake, blueberries, you name it. It seems somewhere someone comes up with an eating contest of some kind and the media TV, radio, newspa-

Beware of bad gas To the editor; On a recent evening after finishing a delightful early dinner I felt a great discomfort in my lower regions. This discomfort did not come from the meal I had consumed but rather due to a certain uninvited visitor to my house.

This person came to my door dressed in safety gear and badge and for all intensive purposes, looked rather official.

He seemed to have my interest at heart and wanted to inspect my Fortis bill to ensure I

was “price protected.”

Sensing that something wasn’t right I sent this visitor off with a friendly goodbye.

My visitor happened to be an independent gas marketer and almost everything this person said to me was either misleading or dishonest.

In fact, as I subsequently discovered, both his request to see my Fortis account information and his reluctance to disclose the true nature of his visit contravene the Code of Conduct for Gas Marketers.

He even adamantly insisted that “He wasn’t selling anything” when I straight up asked

More help needed to end historic scourge To the editor; An increasing number of individuals are reporting to hospitals with a new infectious terror: total drug resistant TB. There is no cure, no effective treatment. It is estimated that those with the disease infect up to 20 others a year.

TB is a historical scourge that is cheaply cured with modern antibiotics. But health care in the developing world is fragmentary and underfunded, and this has allowed the evolution of drug resistance strains, this total drug resistant version the latest to emerge.

TB is enormously infectious and once drug resistant strains are brought to Canada, there is little hope for those a carrier comes in contact with. Infectious, lethal diseases know no boundaries in this connected world of ours. HIV started in Africa and spread death and misery across the globe.

This year the Global Fund to Fight HIV, TB, and Malaria is slated for replenishment, requiring $15 billion to reach its goal of treating 80 per cent of the world’s tuberculosis sufferers. Canada’s share would be $750 million spread over three years. We can spend the money now and prevent the next infectious plague, or wait until it’s too late and the cost much, much higher.

Disgraceful, but true Re: “What ails the B.C. NDP? Plenty,� Tom Fletcher, June 18  What “ails the NDP� is how do they go about receiving a fair shake at becoming governing party, again.

They, like me, (likely) observed in bewilderment as the re-election of the B.C. Liberals – and with a strong majority just to make sure that the natural-resource-extraction machine runs full-steam ahead – actually happened basically because of Big-Industry-interest advertising and, even more so, news-media hype about some alleged first-and-foremost need for economic/job growth to come before healthy eco-system concerns; and apparently, by deduction, it’s purported that we therefore must re-elect the Big Capitalist B.C. “Liberal� party into government and (permanently) keep out of provincial

control the NDP socialist hoards.

Indeed, I was bewildered at reading a post-election column written by a Langley newspaper’s editor in which he, in the very first line, erroneously gives the strong impression that Christy Clark was re-elected. Apparently, her being a non-MLA premier is naught but a technicality, just until she finds a safe riding into which to safely parachute. Indeed, just a formality.

It’s disgraceful but true.

If I am indeed fairly accurate in my (two-and-a-half decades of newsmedia consumption) observations, as long as the, as a very-large majority collective, mostly-libertarian-minded news-media have their way, it’ll be a very long time – if ever – before the NDP again become B.C.’s governing party.  Frank G. Sayers is a fashion historian, and he will be bringing the lace, along with other featherinspired garments, to the Surrey Museum for an upcoming lecture, Fine Feathers Make Fine Birds.

The talk will not only focus on how feathers were used in fashion – primarily between 1890

and 1960 – but also on the exploitation of the birds from which the feathers were taken.

“They are beautiful,” Sayers says. “But the feathers look best where they were grown, on the backs of the birds.”

He says that hundreds upon hundreds of birds would be killed in a single season prior to World War I. In the period around 1909 to 1913 it was fashionable for hats to be enormous, and to achieve the size without the heft designers often turned to lightweight feathers.

For a short-lived time in the 1880s it was also fashionable to fasten whole taxidermied birds to hats and dresses. And

Sayers will have some feathery hats, clothing and fabrics on hand at his upcoming talk, including a few pieces of jewellery made from bird claws, which tie into the museum’s current Birds of Prey exhibit (on display now until Sept. 7).

As a fashion historian, Sayers has produced numerous fashion shows, lectures, and exhibitions in North America. He has always been fascinated by history and says his interest in fashion was piqued in childhood, inspired by his parents involvement in amateur theatre (both performed, and his mother made costumes).

At age 14, Sayers had set up his own museum in the garage, featuring everything from stamps, rocks and ceramics to old machines, blacksmith tools and arrowheads.

He was the Vancouver Museum’s Curator of History from 1976 to 1990.

For the second year in a row, Cloverdale’s Ivan Krcmar has been named McDonald’s outstanding manager of the year in recognition of his accomplishments as a restaurant manager.

The award, one of the company’s top honours, is presented by McDonald’s Canada to select managers across the country in recognition of consistent, outstanding performance.

Once again, Krcmar has earned notice in a number of areas – from building sales and training staff to marketing and managing three McDonald’s restaurants in Surrey.

“Ivan has always gone above and beyond to

provide the highest quality of service that our customers expect from McDonald’s,” McDonald’s Cloverdale owner and operator James Harper said.

“He has always excelled in the area of people and commitment to help train and develop many of our future leaders.”

Krcmar, who began working at McDonald’s six years ago, had a couple of year’s previous restaurant management experience.

He’s been promoted to general manager, and recently completed his bachelor of business administration degree. He hopes to one day own his own McDonald’s.

“It’s an honour to be recognized by the company with a national award,” Krcmar said.

Volunteers urgently needed

It may be summer, but a non-profit society that helps Cloverdale families with education and support has issued an urgent plea for local volunteers.

The Langley Resource Centre of the Alzheimer Society of B.C. is looking to recruit volunteers to perform administrative tasks.

The work is essential because it helps the society support families living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia, something that impacts an estimated one in 11 B.C. residents over the age of 65.

The need for assistance is soaring, and volunteers help ensure the demand is met.

“You’ll know you have been helping people at a significant moment in their lives,” says Rose Puszka, support and education coordinator for the Cloverdale area. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least one, three-hour shift per week, helping with mailouts, packaging education materials, and assisting the walk-in public, emailing notices and working with databases.

Customer service skills, computer skills (Word, Outlook, Excel), and previous experience operating office equipment are required.

Volunteers should also be fluent in English and available during the day. Training will be provided.

By Kristine Salzmann A high school student is encouraging residents to shave their heads for childhood cancer research.

Seventeen-year-old Huda Khokhar is organizing a head shaving event at Cloverdale’s Katzie Park on Aug. 18 to raise funds for St. Baldrick’s Foundation.

The foundation helps volunteers host head shaving fundraisers for childhood cancer research in countries around the world.

Khokhar said St. Baldrick’s global reach was part of its appeal when trying to decide which cancer research organization to support. She wanted to hold an event in honour of her grandmother, who died of lung cancer in 1996.

As well, the event will honour two youth with cancer she learned about through the organization (who St. Baldrick’s calls its Honored Kids), one who has since passed away.

Khokhar was also drawn to the leadership role offered by St. Baldrick’s – she is the primary organizer rather than simply one volunteer among many, but she can look to one of the foundation’s event coaches for guidance.

“I want to do something like this every year, and make it bigger and bigger,” she said.

The Surrey resident, who transferred to Langley’s R.E. Mountain Secondary for its International Baccaulaureate (IB) program, is no stranger to volunteer work, both in her school and the surrounding community.

She volunteers at Langley Memorial Hospital, where she visits with patients, takes them for walks, and does library rounds.

“I just love doing that – visiting people and just talking to them. A lot of them are seniors so they have all these life experiences,” she says.

She is also helping Ovarian Cancer Canada with a Walk of Hope in the fall.

“As I get older I want to be one of those people who are really enthusiastic about these types of things.”

The head shaving event for St. Baldrick’s takes place Aug. 18, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Katzie Park (19373 68 Ave.).
