B.C. 4-H celebrating 100 years 2014 marks 100 years of 4-H in British Columbia.

Planning is already underway to make 2014 the best 4-H year yet! There are all kinds of events planned for B.C. 4-H’s centennial year, but we need your help!

Send in your photos and stories! Let’s celebrate with as many memories as we can find. We are looking for B.C. 4-H photos all the way back to 1914 and your stories. Tell us how you got involved with 4-H, what is your fondest memory of 4-H, what travels did 4-H take you on, what was your 4-H highlight in 500 words or less.

This is my third year in 4-H. I’m 11 years old.

This is my first year in steer. Duke is a Red Angus cross.

He enjoys eating grain, hay, and grass.

At the weigh-in in March

he weighed 1,015 pounds.

I also am doing a show project in photography.

This is my first year in photography.

So far my favourite picture is of a monarch butterfly on an orange flower.

I really enjoy taking pictures.

Eric Smith Big Lake 4-H Club Hello. My name is Eric Smith and this is now my ninth and final year in 4-H. This year I am raising another Berkshire swine named Django.

He and his brother came from Heffley Creek near Kamloops.

They are the greatgrandsons of one of our first sows. They are pasture raised and are getting lots of exercise running with whatever is going by on our road and eating lots of green grass.

The Berkshire is a real interesting breed and a very docile animal.

They are known for their awesome flavoured meat. At home they are very quiet animals but here at show and sale, they seem to take on a different attitude with other pigs.

Pepper, a white lamb with a light tan splotch on his nose and at the bottom of his right leg, is a Dorper, Dorset and American Black Belly hair sheep.

Pepper was born on March 19, 2013.

He has a twin sister named Tinkerbelle. I found Pepper, Tinkerbelle and their mother ‘B’ in our barn hallway about five minutes

after their birth.

They looked so cute, but at the same time very wet and sticky.

My name is Georgia DiMarco from the Big Lake 4-H Club.

This is my second year in 4-H as a junior member, but I was a Clover Bud for two years before. I am 10 years old and I am very dedicated to 4-H. Along with Pepper I have Misty, a gray Mini Lop show rabbit.

This is my second year in 4-H with him. Pepper is my market lamb, and I feel that he will make a tasty meal for someone someday.

I named Pepper “Pepper” because the name popped into my head the first time I saw him.

So why shouldn’t next year’s lamb be named “Salt?”

It seems to make as much sense as calling my white lamb Pepper. All I have to do is hope he is black!

Learning to do... by doing Stephanie Smith Stephanie Smith Big Lake 4-H Club Hi there! My name is Stephanie Smith and I’d like to invite you to this year’s 4-H show and sale.

This year I am bringing in a swine project again, a fine Berkshire barrow named Dr. King Schultz (a dentist). He’s an odd pig, fond of chasing cars, school busses and wandering stealthily through the jungle of grass that is his

pen.

This year my brother and I had to buy our pigs from a farm other than ours’, and these piggies came all the way from Heffley Creek!

They adjusted well, and were soon joined by a gilt from Manitoba. The gilt, Annabelle, decided to take the role of momma for these guys and they’re now inseparable.

Dr. Schultz is a very handsome pig, with the dashing tuxedo always

worn by his Berkshire breed. He’s quite muscular for a barrow. Car chasing is excellent exercise.

His bred is known for it’s tasty meat, as you may have already heard.

Come over to show and sale on Tuesday, Aug. 20 to see him in action.

Meet Dr. Schultz and me in person at the Big Lake stall at the show and sale.

I am willing to answer any questions you have about myself or my project, or

the fantastic 4-H program in general.

Maria DiMarco Maria DiMarco Big Lake 4-H Club Hello Williams Lakers! My name is Maria DiMarco and I am a member of the Big Lake 4-H Club.

I have two projects this year: a pig named Pebbletail and a dog named Shasta.

I also have the role as club reporter this year; if any of you have seen the Big Lake Newsletter, you’ll know that.

Pebbletail is a Landrace female pig. She lives in a pen with her probably brother, Hammer. Pebbletail is quite friendly.

Shasta is my award winning Papillon puppy.

I have been in 4-H with her for three years if I count this year. My first year Shasta achieved first in unit one (out of one), and in the August Show and Sale she achieved first out of three and best groomed out of all

of the probably 10 dogs.

She also got seventh in agility.

Last year Shasta achieved in unit two and she and I attended the Kamloops Dog Show.

I did not achieve in that but did pretty well and got an award for being the only junior.

Anyway, I’m pretty excited for show and sale, aren’t you?

Wish me luck please!

My name is Russell Swan and this is my 9th and final year in 4-H. I am in the Big Lake 4-H Club.

I have three projects this year.

I have a steer named Five Alive. He is a Simmental Angus cross.

I am feeding him altwasser mix.

I am also taking a heifer named Soda Pop. She is Hereford Angus cross. My third project is cow/calf. My cow’s name is Honey-bee and her calf is Tony.

They have kept me busy and I will continue to train them until they are ready for show and sale.

This year, I am president of my club.

This has taught me lots about how to run the meetings.

I have really enjoyed all

my years in 4-H. I have been lucky enough to go on three 4-H trips where I learned a lot about agriculture in B.C., leadership skills and about myself.

I also have made lots of good friends in 4-H.

A smile is something you wear everyday!

Hanna Yahnke Hanna Yahnke Horsefly 4-H Club Hi, my name is Hanna Yahnke.

I am a senior in the Horsefly 4-H Club and this is also my ninth year in 4-H. This year in 4-H I have a full blood Piedmontese steer named Aladdin, a full blood Piedmontese heifer named Princess Jasmine, and a Red Heeler puppy named Dusty.

Some people have never heard of the Piedmontese breed, so I will tell you a bit about them.

The Piedmontese came from an Italian breed, called Auroch and a breed from India called the Zebu.

The Auroch came from Piedmont, Italy, a secluded northern region in the Alps mountain range.

The Zebu came out of the tropical region of India.

The Piedmontese inherited a greater resistance to diseases and parasites from the Zebu. They also inherited a huge feed efficiency and tolerance to extreme cold from the Auroch.

The Piedmontese are known to be the most healthy beef there is due to their low fat, low cholesterol, low calories, while having high protein, tenderness, the best flavour and higher cut ability.

Not only does Piedmontese beef provide a product that is lower in fat, cholesterol, and calories than conventional beef, while providing the tenderness and flavour that consumers desire, but it also benefits the producer.

Quite simply, cattlemen receive the benefit of more meat per carcass, as a result of less waste from fat and bone.

Research conducted by the United States Department of Agriculture compared 11 breeds of popular cattle.

The results of these studies confirm that Piedmontese beef is the best there is. Another benefit of Piedmontese beef is reduced cooking time. In fact, when using Piedmontese beef, cooking time is reduced by about half.

My name is Vivien Meyrick.

This is my third year in the Horsefly 4-H Club and my first year as a junior.

This is also my first year as a photographer.

When I take pictures I think “would I like this in my house?”

I like to take pictures of places I go and of my friends.

Please come out to the 55th Annual Williams Lake Show and Sale.

It is on Aug. 16 to 21 and on Aug. 21 there will be a buyer’s dinner from 3 to 9 p.m.

The parade of champions will be at 5:30 p.m. followed by the sale at 6:30 p.m.

Hi! My name is Courtney Rankin. I’m in the Springhouse 4-H Club and this year would be my seventh year in 4-H. I’ve had a swine project for seven years and my swine, this year, is named Nessie.

Nessie is a Landrace Yorkshire cross. Right at the time I got her she loved being scratched and would roll over almost instantly.

I’m sure enjoying the experience and commitment to raising a pig in 4-H this year.

Maeghan Watkinson Springhouse 4-H Club Hi, my name is Maeghan Watkinson and I am 18 years old.

I was first introduced to 4-H when I was six years old in Merritt.

I did my first year of 4-H there and I have now been in 4-H for a grand total of 12 years, by being a part of the Springhouse 4-H Club.

4-H has brought me closer to the value of agriculture and to a better understanding of the industry.

I have to thank my parents for allowing me to have this opportunity to become more informed so that in the future I will have the chance to have my own ranch like my grandparents.

Throughout my time in 4-H I have done many projects. I first did Cloverbuds for two years, and then went into sewing. I was the only one who wanted to do this project, so my mother became my leader and I did this for two years before switching into swine.

This year I will have done a swine project for seven years! I have also done sheep for four years.

This year I am doing only a swine project. My swine is a purebred Landrace, and I’d purchased him in April from Walter Hengstler.

His breeder was Larry Jalcubec from Alberta. I named my pig Re’ev; we will be under the lot number 175 during the show and sale this year!

This fall, after the show and sale is over, I am going off to Thompson Rivers University to complete my second year of my Bach-

elors of Fine Arts, in Kamloops.

I am hoping to come back next year to do one more year in 4-H before I call it quits!

The show and sale is a must see for animal lovers and children.

There are always classes throughout the long week designated to particular projects, and everyone is welcome to attend.

4-H is a unique learning experience for the young and old.

Hello there, my name is Orrin Watkinson and this is my second year as a senior member of the Springhouse 4-H Club.

I am 15 years old and this is my sixth year in 4-H. In previous 4-H years I have completed Cloverbud and fed lamb projects.

This year I am doing a fed steer by the name of Scarr.

He is a Hereford Cross and he weighs around 1,200 pounds.

He is very friendly and easy to work with. Our lot number is 176.

Shades is a Black Angus steer crossed with a Hereford and also has a little shorthorn in him.

He has a wild, yet curious personality. He behaves well, but I still have a lot of work to do with him.

I like being in 4-H because I like working with

farm animals. Also I like to visit with my many friends in 4-H too.

I was reluctant to join 4-H this year, but a certain “someone” persuaded me.

I am glad I was encouraged to do 4-H again this year because I know it will be a great experience.

Alexia Colton Alexia Colton Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Hello everyone! My name is Alexia Colton. I am a senior member of the Rose Lake Miocene 4-H Club.

I have been in 4-H for nine years. This year I am raising a market steer. His name is Dragon, and he is a purebred Speckle Park.

Did you know that only four people have raised a Speckle Park in our district?

Dragon is my fourth market steer.

He is quite shy with new people, but once he knows you he will be your best

friend.

I am also raising a Speckle Park heifer this year. Her name is Pnina.

She has been bred to a Speckle Park bull and will come back next year with a calf.

She is a complete drama queen and must be the centre of attention.

Everyone will know when Pnina enters the show ring because she will be strutting her stuff and showing off as usual.

She is a very brave little girl and is also very curious when it comes to new things.

My third project is named Chilko.

He is an Australian Shepherd cross. He was my 4-H project six years ago as a puppy in 2008.

Chilko has a beautiful golden, black, and white coat. He is a little bundle of energy that never stops, much like the energizer bunny.

I will be showing Chilko on Aug. 17, Pnina on Aug. 18, and Dragon on Aug. 19 down at the Williams Lake Stockyards for the 55th Annual Williams Lake 4-H Show and Sale.

The event starts on Aug. 16 and finishes with the sale on Aug. 21.

This is my first year in dog with the Rose Lake/Miocene 4H club.

Jake and I have been practicing obedience and agility all spring and summer.

I got Jake a year ago, and since then we have learned a lot about being partners.

I am really excited about show and sale this year, because this is my first year I get to do a project.

Ashley Van Wyck Ashley Van Wyck Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Hi! My name is Ashley Van Wyck, I am 14 years old and I’m in the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Club.

This is my second year in 4-H and I am doing a market lamb for my project.

My lamb’s name is Pedro; he is a Dorper cross

Dorset lamb.

Pedro has black on his head and neck which keeps going onto his front left leg. Pedro also has black speckles all over his body.

4-H, for me, has helped me be a better person.

I can work harder because training my lamb has trained me to get things done.

Brenda Van Wyck Brenda Van Wyck Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H My name is Brenda Van Wyck, I am 16 years old, and I’m in the Rose Lake/ Miocene 4-H Club.

This is my second year in 4-H. This is also my second year doing a market lamb project and a photography project.

This year my lamb’s name is Gyro.

I named him that because ‘gyro’ is the Greek name of a lamb pita sand-

wich.

He is all black with white ‘graffiti’ on his back in the shape of a horseshoe.

He also has an adorable white tuff of hair on top of his head.

So I far I have trained him well. I have been feeding him in order to build up the perfect amount of finish along his ribs and spine while maintaining wide legs and loin, and a long body.

I exercise him by tak-

ing him on walks on our property and I make sure he gets all the nutrients he needs by letting him have a controlled eating period twice every week.

I love raising a market lamb because they are fun, friendly, and exciting to train.

I would like to invite you to come down and watch Gyro and I Aug. 16-21 at the Williams Lake Stockyards.

Hi everyone, my name is Kate Barnett, I am 17 years old.

This is my 10th year in the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H club.

This year I have a market steer, a cow calf, and a herd project.

My market steer’s name is Julio. He is a Black Angus, who I purchased from Joe and Annemarie Baur.

On July 4 he weighed 1130 pounds, I am hoping he will finish around 1250 to 1300 pounds.

Julio is currently eating 22 pounds of altweisser, which is made up of corn, oats, barley, calf pellets, and beet pulp, and 18 pounds of Timothy/alfalfa hay.

I will be showing and selling Julio at the 55th Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale on August 21.

Along with Julio I also have a cow calf pair, my cow’s name is Macy who is a two-year-old Red Angus cross.

Learning to do... by doing Kimberly Davis Kimberley Davis Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Hi! My name is Kimberley Davis and this is my 4-H market ewe lamb.

Her name is Sadie and she is a Dorset lamb.

This is my third year in 4-H and I am 12 years old.

My lamb has been quite a bit of trouble this year.

The first day we got her she ran away when we were trying to weigh her.

We chased her through the bush in our flip-flops until we caught her.

When we finally did catch her she was so worn out we thought she was

going to have a heart attack.

But she lived. A while later she got attacked by our German Shepherd but wasn’t hurt very badly.

Then two weeks later she got out of her pen and was gone for 30 hours.

I don’t think we ever would have found her if it wasn’t for my Border Collie Teak who brought her back.

Sadie was in bad shape.

She had puncture wounds in her neck and a patch of wool ripped out of her back. My mom was positive she wouldn’t live, but she did. So that’s how

Melanie Wintjes my year has been – although challenging I have learned a lot. So, on Aug. 21, I hope to see you at

show and sale where you can bid on many 4-H projects including my resilient lamb.

Skye Forcier Skye Forcier Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H Well it looks like it’s here again, Show and Sale!

It seems like just yesterday I was looking through a field of baby calves looking for the perfect one to take care of this year.

This is my seventh year in 4-H and this will be my fifth steer project. The excitement never gets old, I never stop learning and every year seems just as frantic as the last. Throughout the year I have spent hours with my steer, grooming him, feeding him, bathing him, and training him for your enjoyment.

My name is Skye Forcier

and I belong to the Rose Lake/Miocene 4-H club.

This year I’m wearing lot number 126. My steer’s name is Buck. He’s a Black Angus born and raised on my family’s ranch where he and my heifer are grass and

grain fed. As always it was a great year but it all leads to these five days where all our hard work with our projects comes to fruition.

This is my sixth year in 4-H and in the Chimney Valley 4-H club.

This year I am doing gardening planter boxes.

They are in the form of wheelbarrows made from barn boards and they look really neat.

I have had so much fun over my years in 4-H. This year I am a reporter for my club and it is a lot of fun.

My steer is named Houdini, like the great escape artist.

I named my steer Houdini because he is a great escape artist. He has gotten out so many times. He is quite a bundle of mischief.

When he gets out we usually find him by the hay bales by the barn. But twice Houdini and my brother’s calf went on a walk about and were gone for days. It took a helicopter and a snow machine to get them home.

Canim Valley 4-H members learn about birthing lambs Paige Archie Canim Valley 4-H The Canim Valley 4-H Club has started to drift from just having market lamb projects to also having female projects.

Something new last year was female ewe lambs; we had three in the club.

The members were Paige Archie, Jolee Campbell, and Dusty-Rose Sellars.

Paige’s lamb’s name is Wilma, Jolee’s is Rosetta, and Dusty’s is Feather. During the month of March we had wonderful little additions to the club. The first one to lamb was Feathers, and she had twins, one boy named Starlight, and one female named Moonlight.

The lambs were born on March 3. My mom and I were going down to the barn to go and feed and we heard a faint baa and looked in the stall and found two baby lambs. We quickly grabbed our lambing box and put iodine on both of the ends of the umbilical cords, and went and got Dusty.

The female lamb was very little when she was born and wasn’t getting much milk from her mom because her brother was bigger and kept hitting her out of the way.

Because of this she was bottle fed for about two weeks.

But she ended up growing stronger and was able to eat on her own.

Then there was Wilma with one big boy who is

named Pebbles born on March 7.

He was a big boy because I weighed him two days after his birth and he weighed 13.3 pounds. So he was probably about 12 pounds when he was born. Because he was so big Wilma had a lot of trouble having him on her own. I got called down to the barn because it had looked like Wilma was going into labour.

This was around 7 p.m. and Wilma kept trying to push but Pebbles was just too big for her. Around 11 p.m. I decided that she needed help so she wasn’t in much more pain. This was the first time that I had ever had to help and I only read about how to help and so I was very nervous. But all went well and Pebbles was born at 11:15 p.m.

Last was Rosetta with a little boy named Taz. Rosetta had Taz throughout the night on March 15 when no one was around.

He weighed about five

pounds when he was born.

Jolee was very excited that she had finally had her lamb.

Although it was a surprise that Rosetta only had one lamb because everyone thought that she would be having twins or even triplets because she was the biggest of Wilma and Feathers.

With having the new little lambs around, the members had learned how the tails had to be docked and the boys needed to be castrated.

I learned how to dock the lamb’s tail with my first ewe lamb, so I showed Jolee and Dusty how it was done and why it was done. I showed them where the right part was to put the elastic so it’s not too long and not too short. The castrating was done by Bill and Maureen Hadden and shown to myself. After I was shown, I had helped Jolee castrate Taz and showed her how it was done. Now all the girls have new knowledge.

Along with all the excite-

ment of the lambs being born, I also had the experience of my heifer giving birth to her heifer calf on March 1. She is a beautiful calf and I named her Bam

Bam because her mom is Betty. His nick name is The Beibs because he was born on Justin Beiber’s birthday.

I will also be bringing my steer Koda who is a Semi-

metal cross and is about 1,200 pounds now.

Dixie-Lane Boyce Dixie-Lane Boyce Canim Valley 4H Dixie-Lane Boyce is 11 years old. She is a member of the Canim Valley 4H Club.

Dixie has been a 4-H member for three years and is very enthusiastic and dedicated to her project.

One of Dixie’s favorite things to do is play with her swine, DJ (Dixie Jr.), a Landrace X. From the day she got her project she began to build a close bond.

DJ gets very happy when Dixie gets to the barn, runs and jumps and almost knocks her over.

DJ loves to play with his beach ball and get his exercise. Dixie makes his bed out of straw and she enjoys watching him play with his straw and toss it around for a while before laying down.

DJ stands up on the fence and waits for her while she

gets his water and waits and watches her, faithful companion.

Dixie has favorite photos of her with DJ, she is in his pen when he was smaller

and he is climbing on her lap, licking her face and biting her hair and just cud-

dling.

Dixie looks forward to achievement day and to

Jolee Campbell Jolee Campbell Canim Valley 4-H Hi, my name is Jolee Campbell and a member of the Canim Valley 4-H Club.

This year I have a ewe with lamb at foot and the lamb is my market project.

My ewe, Rosiitta is a Cheviot cross breed and she had her lamb on

March 15.

I named the lamb, Taazziee, who is now five months old.

Taazziee has spots on his face and legs and his breed is Cheviot crossed with a Suffolk.

This was my first experience raising a female project and it was an exciting time when the ewes from our club were ready to give birth to their

lambs.

We learned a lot from the Internet and from sheep breeders in the area about lambing.

I want to thank the community for supporting the all of the 4-H clubs and wish all the 4-H clubs and members a good time at the 55th annual Williams Lake and District 4-H Show and Sale.

Dusty Rose Sellars Dusty Rose Sellars Canim Valley 4-H My name is Dusty Rose Sellars and this year my 4-H projects are a market lamb and a ewe with lamb at foot.

My ewe, Feathers had

twin lambs on March 3, a male and female.

The male’s name is Moonlight and the female’s name is Starlight.

They are five months old.

Moonlight is the oldest of the twins and is two-feet

tall and Starlight is one and a half feet tall.

Moonlight is my market project this year and will be sold at the annual 4-H show and sale.

I wish all the 4-H members good luck at the Williams Lake Show and Sale.

Hello my name is Lorna Dixon and I am 11 years old.

This is my first year having a steer. I’m in the Canim Valley 4-H Club.

My steer is a Hereford Cross and I named him Hobbes.

Raising a steer is a lot of work, but I think he is coming along great.

So far it’s been fun feeding, brushing, and bathing my steer.

He shows his appreciation by licking my yellow boots.

I joined 4-H because I watched my older sisters Kailtlyn and Kalei with their steers and now it is my turn.

I also joined 4-H to meet new friends and I am looking forward to show and sale.

Learning to do... by doing Kalei Dixon Kalei Dixon Canim Valley 4-H Hi my name is Kalei Dixon and this is my ninth year in 4-H. This year I am president of the Canim Valley 4-H Club.

This year we were in the Aboriginal day parade in Williams Lake.

I had my show clothes on.

And I was asking my dad for my lot number.

He laughed and said I don’t need it for the parade.

I enjoy washing my steer and helping the younger members with their animals.

I have had many steers in the past with my older sister but this is my first year with my younger sister, Lorna.

My steers name is Calvin from the cartoon, Calvin and Hobbes.

Hobbes is Lorna’s steers name.

We had our beef achievement day on Sunday, July 28.

I am looking forward to seeing old friends at the show and sale and

making some new ones.

I would like to invite you to stop by and say hi.
