’ve really been appreciating the great weather we’ve been having.

July and August are awesome here in the Comox Valley. There isn’t a better place in the world to enjoy the natural beauty and bountiful nature that we are so lucky to have. Tourists are seeing this as well when they’ve been camping, hiking, biking, and visiting the many attractions locally.

We’ve seen a lot of visitors downtown as well, experiencing the character and friendliness of our small city.

Downtown people have been busy with diverse projects and events this year. Back in June we celebrated all things wildly creative with the Elevate the Arts event in our back alleys, and then July 1st brought the Canada Day Parade down 5th Street.

There’s something really moving about seeing the crowds of people celebrating our country that way. We had a massive turn-out of vendors for the 43rd Annual Market Day and 8th

I am just a tool being ❝ guided by the essence of

his life, living for nine years without electricity while working on art projects and raising a family.

For Haley, his inspiration is a process of discovery.

“I am just a tool being guided by the essence of the material,” he explains. “The forms I’m using dictate the end result.

The famous renaissance artist, Michelangelo once said, “Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”

Haley began his career in Nova Scotia, collecting agate from Blomidon in the Minas Basin, where the highest tides on earth occur and an abundance of beautiful agates can be found.

He began transforming the agate into rings for the tourist industry, and while he was rambling the hills looking for ways to create art his career began to take hold.

Haley worked odd jobs while finding time to create art and build his home, eventually landing in the Comox Valley. He gets caught in a wave of reminiscing as he shares stories of this time in

The Courtenay Library has something for everyone

he moon belongs to everyone. The best things in life are free!” raves the 1925 song from the musical Good News. More good news is that all libraries belong to everyone and are also free, including our Downtown Courtenay Library on 6th Street!

Courtenay librarians, Deborah van der Linde (Adult by Services) and Lisa Mary Donlan Grant (Children and Youth Services) enthuse about the library’s many resources: Mango’s online language learning tools, magazines, databases, scholarly journals, Freegal music service (with downloadable songs to keep), e-books, audiobooks, and even a selection of book club sets for adult or youth clubs. Everything is ours to use for free with a library card!

Van der Linde, Donlan and I launched into a lively, nostalgic conversation about early information searches involving paper card catalogues, microfiches, and MS-DOS, before Windows ultimately transformed everything by about 1995.

One of my brothers, who as a child preferred constant movement to reading (but compensated in spades for that later in life), fondly recalls that he had eyed the high shelves of books with much awe and curiosity.

The modern library boasts more than books, but the sheer volume of books never fails to impress! It would be worthwhile just to take your children to the library to make that vivid impression - but you will come away with more.

She grew up in the tiny village of Calatrava, in the province of Negros Occidental and she

has not forgotten how hard life can be. “I remember when I was little, my teacher broke my pencil in half so that it could be shared,” she said. “And I cried.”

Working with her husband, a couple of local teachers, and a principal who is a client of hers, McLeod collects school supplies and everyday essentials for over 650 poverty-stricken students in

other elements in her pieces.

“It is almost earthy in its origins. She’ll take a roman coin and put her stamp on it, mix it with a key or a bead and make something beautiful,” says Patterson. “As an art it is more than just jewellery!”

She is amazed by a fashion designer’s ability to come up with new, innovative product each season. “Each time I go to buy I think how are they going to reinvent the wheel, and they always do. Whether it’s a hem length, a lining or an intricate detail. The designers manage to be so creative and bring something new into each season.”

St. James is a classic line from France. It started out as a fishermen sweater line for men and has evolved into a huge factory while maintaining its roots as family-owned company that sources all their wool from french sheep.

Another favourite from France is Adventure des Toile. Designers transfer French art pieces onto fabric. “Lots of people love it because it’s funky and different.”

Patterson tells her customers that it’s not so much finding an outfit. It’s more about finding pieces that go together. “And

that’s sort of fun,” she says. “You find something you love and then get creative. A great top paired with some funky jeans, roll them up put a chunky sock on and a little boot and away you go,” she smiles. “I think it’s important to play with your wardrobe and not be afraid to mix it up.”

Patterson helps women find a line that they like, that they can go back to every season. “Because it fits their body,” she says. “It fits their style.”

Once a woman finds a brand she loves, its simple for her to keep her wardrobe fresh, adding a few new pieces every season.

One of the fun parts of Patterson’s job is to help women find shapes and colours that work for their body and skin types.

“We can help them find shapes that are suitable, colours that look great. As we age our colours change, our skin tone changes, our hair colour changes, and women are not always sure where to go with that.” She explains.

“We have a lot of fun encouraging customers to try new things. There’s no pressure. Just find something that makes you feel good.”

This fall, the business will move again as it takes over the corner of 5th Street and Duncan Ave., where Sylvie’s Boutique has been a fixture for twenty years.

Sylvie’s will be closing this summer, and as one of a few downtown businesses either closing or changing hands, shoppers are feeling nostalgic.

As we look back through the years at the businesses that have come and gone our favourites always stand out for the old-fashioned kind of service that never goes out of style. One of the loveliest things about a trip downtown is the small talk that takes place as you wander from shop to shop. There is a feeling of warm welcome in each store, as retailers build long time friendships with their regular customers.

With larger, box stores opening across the city, small businesses sometimes feel like they have an uphill battle to compete against, so it is gratifying to live in a community that supports and believes in the power of shopping local.

If looking back through the years has you feeling nostalgic, Courtenay Antiques is a great place to trip down memory lane.

This store opened on 4th street just over a year ago but seems like it has been downtown forever, with a great selection of eclectic items reminiscent of days gone by.

Maintaining a thriving downtown core takes dedication and vision. hat a treat to share coffee and conversation with Anh Le, curator of the Comox Valley Art Gallery.

Le graduated from North Island College in 2007 and began work at the gallery soon after.

“I didn’t go to school with the intention of being a curator but I found myself gravitating towards leadership and organizational roles,” Le explains as she recalls her years as a student. As she entered the workforce she maintained her curiosity and eagerness to learn new things.

“I took on more responsibility, especially as it related to the production of exhibitions, working closely with Tony Martin, the previous curator, to learn as much as I could from him.”

In 2010 Le took over the role of curator as Tony Martin retired. She finds her role inspiring.

“As a contemporary art curator I work to find art and artists who are exploring art materials and contemporary art issues in a new, interesting, and provocative way,” she explains. “I feel as if my job is to get extremely

Le’s curiosity extends past Vancouver Island, across Canada and internationally.

Current budget constraints prevent her from bringing in artists from regions further than Alberta, but as she looks ahead one of her long-term goals is to

increase the scope of exhibitions.

Le sees the gallery as a conduit for artists to exhibit their work to enrich culture, to shift how we think about how we are living, provide social criticism, and bring up important issues relevant to our cultural identities.

Through various forms, art has the powerful ability to get people thinking and talking about how we live as a society, “I’m interested in getting people to come look at the work

and have responses, whatever those responses might be,” says Le, “conveying art’s power to inspire people and transform their lives.”

To this end, Le works hard to present the work of each artist in a manner that ensures his or her message is as strong as it can be. “When an exhibit comes to the gallery the focus is on the art and the message that the art can convey, to speak for itself in the best way possible,” explains Le. There are two ways that art finds its way into the gallery, either through a formal submission process, which is detailed on the CVAG website (http:// www.comoxvalleyartgallery.com/ submissions.html), or through active curatorial work as Le seeks out artists whose work she find engaging and thought provoking.

“I seek out work that I think would be important for our community to see,” she explains.

“Each show involves extensive research and planning to ensure that everything, from the big cerebral stuff to the nitty gritty details, is in place.”

Le begins to speak animatedly as she looks ahead to a fantastic series of exhibitions over the next few months.

Upcoming exhibits at the Comox Valley Art Gallery For a suggested donation of $2 the Comox Valley Art Gallery offers an amazing opportunity to enrich your life and open your mind to new ways of thinking and seeing.

Here are some highlights of current and upcoming shows: In the Contemporary Gallery Re: Moved (Aug. 10 – Sept. 21, 2013), featuring sculptures by Brent Bukowski of Kaslo, B.C., and paintings by Mark Laver of Victoria, B.C. This show examines the visceral beauty of detritus, the artistic tradition of utilizing found objects (and photographs), and the emotive and intellectual results of creating objects and images that evoke stillness out of that which once moved.

Laver’s paintings are sourced from the blunt, artless photographs of rural car accidents and mobile home fires posted on the Internet by volunteer fire departments and small town police detachments. Bukowski’s industrial sculpture, inspired by global patterns of diminishing biodiversity will be created from machinery components, including auto and bicycle parts, which he has accumulated and reclaimed from landfills.

Transience + permanence: (Sept.

28 – Nov. 2, 2013), featuring the sculptures of Comox Valley artists, Catherine Lavelle and the late Douglas Senft This exhibition of installation and related sculptures reflects upon the concept of home and shelter in the context of contemporary life, embodying aspects of home and survival in the natural and man-made world. The exhibition was originally intended to be collaboratively produced by both artists. With Senft’s passing, Lavelle will complete the pieces with assistance from guest artists; friends and contemporaries. Presented in various metals, including bronze, aluminum and steel and developed from their preliminary sketches, the works maintain the intention and spirit of their collaboration.

paintings by Comox Valley artist, Ron Morrison.

Rendered in brilliant translucent jewel tones, the colours of decaying classic and antique automobiles mark time, light, metal and glass collecting amongst overgrown field and forest.

Painted from photographs with liberal deviations, these “characters” are assembled as if to accompany each other in reminisces of adventures past.

In the George Sawchuk Gallery Windows: (Aug. 10 – Sept. 21, 2013), featuring the mixed media drawings of Comox Valley artist, Trish Smith Windows is a series of drawings of scenes, which Smith witnessed

from inside of a vehicle while growing up in South Africa.

The intimate relation between the window, seeing and perception is a demarcation of inside and out, private and public. Smith uses the drawn transparency of glass to bring attention to political relationships during the Apartheid era.

McKirgan The paintings grew out of McKirgan’s desire to document her world during a certain place and time, and her belief that one can tell a lot about a person from their environment.

But it’s not just for girls. “We have a lot of guys coming in now which is awesome,” says Young.

Bonnie & Clyde’s has a great selection of men’s fashion in a wide range of sizes up to 4X, so the guy that has been working out and bulking up his arms can find shirts he will fit into without giving up his weights.

“We want to make people feel good. That’s our goal. When you come in here, I don’t care if you try on a hundred things. You’re going to walk out with something that looks good,” Denny exclaims. ““Vintage styles are made towards showing off curves.”

Though it’s a look that appeals to many teens and young adults, Denny is thrilled to have customers who, now in their eighties, were the original trendsetters when the rockabilly movement was taking shape. In keeping with this theme, Denny began looking for a vintage car that she could restore.

“My plan is to drive it every day.

It’s going to take a while to finish but hopefully in the next year I’ll have it on the road.”

She fell in love with the car as soon as she saw it but knew it was meant for her when she found out that the previous owners had named it Bonnie. As soon as the car restoration is complete Denny will be cruising 5th street in high fashion with the stereo crooning tunes like the Stray Cats. Boys will start styling their hair in Pompadours and the girls will swing their skirts while people on the sidewalk start humming along…“We’re gonna rock this town, rock it inside out…”

But it’s not just for girls. “We have a lot of guys coming in now which is awesome,” says Young.

Bonnie & Clyde’s has a great selection of men’s fashion in a wide range of sizes up to 4X, so the guy that has been working out and bulking up his arms can find shirts he will fit into without giving up his weights.

“We want to make people feel good. That’s our goal. When you come in here, I don’t care if you try on a hundred things. You’re going to walk out with something that looks good,” Denny exclaims. ““Vintage styles are made towards showing off curves.”

Though it’s a look that appeals to many teens and young adults, Denny is thrilled to have customers who, now in their eighties, were the original trendsetters when the rockabilly movement was taking shape. “It’s cool because it gives people something to look forward to,” says Denny as she talks about the pin up parties taking place around the valley. “They come in and buy dresses and have fun with the theme.”

Bonnie & Clyde’s logo is a ’37 Packard with silhouettes of the infamous crime team of the 1930’s.

In keeping with this theme, Denny began looking for a vintage car that she could restore.

“My plan is to drive it every day.

It’s going to take a while to finish but hopefully in the next year I’ll have it on the road.”

She fell in love with the car as soon as she saw it but knew it was meant for her when she found out that the previous owners had named it Bonnie. As soon as the car restoration is complete Denny will be cruising 5th street in high fashion with the stereo crooning tunes like the Stray Cats. Boys will start styling their hair in Pompadours and the girls will swing their skirts while people on the sidewalk start humming along…“We’re gonna rock this town, rock it inside out…”

Teen singer finds the right look

ROOTS • JACK’D • TROUSERS Whether she is looking for a natural sun-kissed look or bold styles to make an impact on stage, 15-year old local singer songwriter Keisja Cox heads to Roots Salon. Cox has been getting her hair done at Roots since she was eleven years old.

“I have a lot of trust in them,” she says. “They really know what they are doing. I come in thinking I know what I want but they always create something better and different than what I expected.”

Cox naturally has light brown hair, but colour specialist and master designer, Ida-Marie Huska talked her into experimenting with some bolder tones, colour blocking Cox’s hair with copper, black and brown for a stronger, bolder look.

“When you are on stage everything has to be a little bigger, a little bolder,” explains Huska. “Your hair has to have more definition, impact, and drama.

After having her hair done, Cox heads to the makeup counter at the back of the salon where

At Jack’d, Cox met up with fellow singer/songwriter Stephanie Formosa.

The two have been working together to collaborate on song-writing projects since connecting at the Vancouver Island Music Business Conference in May. The song they wrote together, But I Like It won them first place in the Great Canadian Song Race and has garnered extensive radio play and fantastic exposure for their growing music careers.

Debbie Hickson, owner of Jack’d, helps them choose outfits influenced by the punk and grunge movements. Hickson’s store is not so much about brands as it is about finding the right look. “Grunge is this year’s hot ticket,” says Hickson. “To pull off the grunge look think oversized tops, mismatched colours and heavy dark footwear. Above all remember to look like you don’t care even though you do, and have fun with it.”

The Potters Place

Bridges Salon I have quite a few rings. One of my favourites is this chunky silver ring. I like that it has a bit of a graphic element to it. I love silver jewellery and she has a great selection.

Don McRae

There was a time when, if you were looking for Don McRae in his leisure hours, you would find him out fly-fishing or jogging.

Now, his favourite activity is walking his daughters to school.

by Jennifer Cox “I used to have time for hobbies before I had children but now what they enjoy, I enjoy,” he smiles.

“I tried introducing my daughters to fly-fishing but they don’t really have patience for it.”

Don McRae is a dedicated family man with strong roots in the Comox Valley.

He was first elected as MLA for the Comox Valley riding in May 2009 and before being appointed to his current role as Minister of Education he served as Minister of Agriculture.

He is married to his high school sweetheart Deanne and together they have two daughters, Gracie, 10 and Chloe, 3.

Throughout the year, McRae spends at least 75 days in hotel rooms across the province. “It is only a novelty for the first few days,” he says. “And then you just want to get home to your family. I like to be able to walk my daughters to school or pick them up from school. It’s a small thing but watching them at the park or walking Seal Bay with them, wandering around with the dog, exploring the community, those are my favourite activities.”

Before entering politics McRae taught for 14 years at GP Vanier Secondary School, and one day he hopes to return to teaching.

“I am one of the few MLAs who have a job to go back to,” he says. It is clear that he still has a passion

for education. “I do want to go back and teach. I teach social studies and government and it is one thing to teach the book version but I can share my experience as a cabinet minister and MLA. I’ve gone through general elections and can explain the process first hand.”

One thing he emphasizes is that as a teacher your political ideology needs to stay at home. “You teach kids how to think not what to think!” he says.

He also wants youth to know that politics is attainable. “I’m just an average guy. A guy who wants to make the community better! I think it is important that we all think about what our vision is for

the Comox Valley, to ask ourselves how we can work with people in the community to make it stronger.”

Whether it is at the service club level, or through municipal or volunteer organizations, McRae is proud of the great energy in the community. He especially loves the energy of living and working in the downtown core.

“We make a conscious decision to have our constituency office downtown,” he says. “My wife had a business on fifth street for fifteen years and we thoroughly enjoy fifth street and think its one of the best, most vibrant downtowns in all of BC.” Other than a five-year stint at University, McRae has never lived outside the Comox Valley. “My heart says that we have a really good sense of community here,” he says. “We have events like the farmers market. You can’t help but fall in love with it. It is a real farmers market with good entertainment and a sense of community.”

McRae loves these community-oriented events but he admits that sometimes it takes a lot of time to get anywhere as he often stops to chat with family, friends, and constituents. “I feel a bit of guilt when I am enjoying family time and I am approached by a person who has a really important issue. I find it hard to disengage. My youngest Choe, has some different social graces and she’ll just drag me away,” he says with a

“Gracie has been in politics her whole life,” he says.

“She’s had the opportunity to spend time with two

premiers of the province, and it didn’t seem to faze her at all.”

But McRae never wants his children to feel burdened by his role as a public figure. “The family rule is no one has to go to anything they don’t want to.”

He would like to instill in his daughters a desire to give back to the community. “Everyone tries to give more than they take,” he says. His philosophy is straightforward: “Be positive and positive comes to you.”

My friend ordered Mexican lasagne. She was thrilled to discover they had just made a fresh batch.

Corn tortillas are layered with southwest rice, refried beans, spinach, salsa, mexi-cheese, and topped with jalapenos, black olives, red peppers and feta.

We weren’t planning on ordering desert but when we heard about the famous deli-bar (pictured) we had to indulge. “We sell a lot of these,” Latimer told us. “They are so addictive!”

Addictive is an understatement. Rice crispies, peanuts and a layer of chocolate make these bars an irresistible treat.

My friend and I both ended up taking some home for later. As we left the restaurant with full tummies and our hands full of take-home treats, it felt sort of like when you’re leaving your mom’s house and she’s piling good food into your arms to make sure you are as nourished when you head home as you were at her table.
