Water advisory for Beaver Falls on tap BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
A water quality advisory was issued for 207 rate payers of the Beaver Falls Waterworks District (BFWD) Monday. Affected homes are located in Area A between the outskirts of Montrose to Bluebird corner and the Forsythia subdivision in Fruitvale. The water lines were installed in the late ‘50s and only certain lots remain in the BFWD, most newer homes pull water from municipal sources that are chlorinated. The notice comes after recent water test results indicated low levels of total coliform bacteria, when ideally there should be none. The bacteria is commonly found
in the environment in sources such decaying vegetation or old fecal coliforms. “This is a precautionary measure,” said Shirley Fletcher, BFWD secretary/ treasurer. “We need to warn people because coliforms can affect the health of babies and the elderly.” Water chlorination by a pump operator began Monday and will continue to Wednesday, with at-risk residents advised to take precautions until the end of the week. Residents with immature or compromised immune systems are advised to boil water rapidly for at least one minute or use an alternate safe source. “Our water comes from an aquifer,
an underground source,” said Fletcher, adding, “anything can leach through so until the chlorination is complete the advisory is in effect.” Water testing for total coliform and E. coli counts is conducted at eight sites in the BFWD on a bi-weekly basis. Fletcher is responsible for the testing, which involves visiting a rate payer’s house, and running tap water for five minutes before collecting a sample. An independent laboratory in Kelowna completes bacteriological testing and any adverse results are reported to Interior Health and the BFWD. Once the bacteria is eradicated by chlorination, a normal water notice will be issued. See MONTROSE, Page 3
busy during the fiveday festival although there were no further fatalities reported over the weekend.. As people continued to trickle out of Shambhala grounds Monday, the RCMP were maintaining road stops throughout the West Kootenay. There are multiple drug-related incidents that “we end up having to deal with,” said Romanchuk. “We’ve been busy with a lot of occurrences that are drug related,” he said, adding, “and most of what we are dealing with is hard drugs like LSD.”
House fire ‘electrical in nature’ BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
Officials are calling an early morning house fire in Rossland last week “electrical in nature and accidental.” Regional Fire Chief Terry Martin, said the single family dwelling was engulfed in flames when his department responded to a call Aug. 8, just before 1 a.m. Twenty-one firefighters were on the scene and had the fire under control in two hours. There were no injuries to the firefighters or to the six occupants in the residence. Five children and one adult were present in the house and managed to escape the burning building but all family possessions were lost to the blaze. Emergency social services and the Red Cross met with the family Friday to help.

New playground for Sunningdale kids By Sheri Regnier Times Staff
A four-year quest of a Trail councillor came to fruition Friday after the final touches were installed on a new playground in Lower Sunningdale park. Coun. Robert Cacchioni was the first to take the “buggy” for a spin, one of many features meant to engage children from ages two to 12. Council approved $50,000 in the 2013 budget to complete the playground, which is in the first phase of the city’s proposed plan to

upgrade the park. “This park is heavily used throughout the year,” said Cacchioni. “Over the course of the summer two to three thousand people will pass through for soccer alone. Now the younger kids will have something to do.” In addition to the playground, a temporary porta-potty is now in place so families do not have to drive to use the amenities at Gyro Park. Cacchioni is proposing permanent washrooms that will be open year-round, an instalment that could happen
next year. “A lot of people walk down here. In the winter they come to cross country ski or snowshoe,” he said, adding “we need to have services available at this park to accommodate everyone.” Although infrastructure costs such as sewer and water line upgrades take priority in the city’s budget, Cacchioni is hopeful that the second phase of the project will begin next year. Proposed park upgrades include a resurfacing of the tennis courts with a special coating that can be flooded

in the winter for an ice-skating rink or outdoor hockey venue; and hanging hoops for basket ball players. “By the time the plan is complete the whole thing may cost up to $225,000,” said Cacchioni. “It will only move forward when council approves it.” Although further park improvements could be deferred indefinitely, the Parks and Recreation Department is currently developing a master plan to deliver services to Trail residents. From page 2 The purpose of the plan is to assist the city in developing strategies to provide quality leisure services for the next 10 years and beyond. “We had to look at what was going to be best for recreational services in the long run,” said Cacchioni. “Things may not happen this year or next, but that is the upside of a plan. No matter who is running the ship there is a goal to work toward.” Over the last six months, information has been collected from stakeholder interviews, council workshops, and a general com-
munity survey, which closed July 1. Key recommendations and priorities extracted from the data will include short, mid and long-term goals and what direction to take the services in. This fall, the Parks and Recreation department will host a public meeting to reveal a draft of the master plan. “My biggest hope is that by the end of it all, the community has participated in the process to develop the plan,” said director Trisha Davison. “Because it is the residents who benefit directly or indirectly from the services.”

Trail restaurant shows support By Art Harrison Times Staff
The Arlington Bar and Grill is giving some love to the Kidney Foundation by kickstarting a local campaign. For those who may not be able to make the annual Kidney Walk at Gyro Park (Aug. 25), there is an alternative way to show your support in advance. This year the Arlington is offering support by presenting, “Dine at the ‘A,’ all day,” a campaign, on Wednesday, during which 10 per cent of the money
raised by all food sales will be donated to the Kidney Foundation. “We’d like to encourage everyone to go down to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner at the ‘A’ and support the Kidney Walk,” said local walk organizer, Joanne McKinnon. “It’s a chance to try out their menu and support a good cause.” For more information, to make a donation and for those interested in registering for the walk visit www.kidney.ca/bcwalk and scroll down “Interior B.C” and click on Trail walk.
The two acts destroyed the Grand Forks Hotel and damaged the Winnipeg Hotel. Both hotels have since been demolished with the Grand Forks Hotel site currently a vacant lot and a liquor store being built on the former Winnipeg Hotel lot.

Drastically low sockeye salmon returns leads to fishing ban
Submitted photo

THE CANADIAN PRESS TERRACE, B.C. - Aboriginal people in British Columbia who rely on Skeena River sockeye are facing some extremely difficult decisions as sockeye salmon returns plunge to historic lows. Lake Babine Chief Wilf Adam was on his way to Smithers, B.C., on Monday for a discussion about whether to entirely shut down the food fishery on Lake Babine, something he said would be drastic and unprecedented - but may ultimately be necessary. The recreational and nonaboriginal fisheries on the lake and Babine River have been shut entirely since the Department of Fisheries and Oceans issued a directive last week, though aboriginal people have still been able to fish in a limited way for food. But that could change. “If the numbers are the way they are, we’ve got to close everything down,” Adam said. “That’s not an easy decision to make. Salmon is our livelihood. That is the soul of our being. To deny that from our citizens is not a happy event.” Last month, the department noted returns for the Skeena River sockeye run were dire. Mel Kotyk, North Coast area director for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, said the department’s monitoring activities were finding one of the lowest runs in 50 years. Only 453,000 sockeye are expected to swim along the Skeena this year, Kotyk said, compared to approximately 2.4 million last year, forcing all commercial and recreational Skeena sockeye fisheries to be closed.
Conservation groups have sounded the alarm, saying Alaskan commercial fishermen are contributing to the problem as Skeena River sockeye get caught in the nets of Americans fishing for pink and chum sockeye. Kotyk said department scientists don’t know why the return numbers are so low. “We don’t have anything definitive at this point,” Kotyk said in an interview Monday.
“Salmon is our livelihood. That is the soul of our being. To deny that from our citizens is not a happy event.” wilf adam
“Most of the Skeena fish come from the Babine system. And when they went out to sea they seemed to be very strong and healthy and in good numbers, so we think something happened in the ocean.” He said all parties involved in the fishery are being consulted. “Everyone has been very cooperative,” he said. He noted that at this point, there are no concerns about next year’s returns based on the current predictions. But the Headwaters Initiative, an aboriginal nongovernment organization in northern British Columbia, slammed the department for not ensuring the recreational fishery was closed on Lake Babine earlier. Adam agreed, saying the directive for the lake last week
came about three weeks late. Now, he said, the department needs to step up enforcement to ensure all fishing on the lake aside from the aboriginal food fishery ceases. “Because of mismanagement by DFO on our fisheries, it’s forcing me to tell the elders and the single mothers that there is no salmon for them,” said Adam. “It is forcing me to limit what we can do on our lake in regards to the salmon food fish. I have to balance with the conservation measures that are in place now. We’ve never seen anything like this in all these years I’ve done this. “I’ve asked the elders and they have never seen anything like this at all.” Adam said other species of salmon seem not to be having the same problems as the sockeye. He said pinks are in the lake in good numbers, as are jack salmon. Jack are two-yearold sockeye that have returned to the spawning channels two years early. Adam said they can be cooked, but they can’t be dried or smoked, which is how his people have traditionally eaten them. And they don’t spawn. “What those jacks do in the spawning channels and spawning beds is destroy things. I call them teenaged salmon. They’re just there to destroy every thing.” The one bright spot, he said, is that usually when jack salmon show up, the return for sockeye the following year is good. “So I have to look at this positively,” he said.
Wildfire evacuation alert lifted for residents near Lillooet Blaze never grew larger than two hectares but officials concerned high winds could cause spread • • •
THE CANADIAN PRESS LILLOOET, B.C. - An evacuation alert that kept about a dozen residents near Lillooet, B.C., nervously watching a nearby wildfire was lifted Monday after crews declared the blaze fully contained. The fire began over the weekend near Seton Portage, located more than 200 kilometres northeast of Vancouver, as lightening sparked dozens of new fires across the province. The fire never grew larger than two hectares, but officials were concerned high winds could have caused it to quickly grow and spread.
The evacuation alert, which warned residents to be ready to leave at a moment’s notice, was lifted early Monday afternoon as the province’s wildfire management branch revised the fire’s status to 100 per cent contained. Still, fire information officer Melissa Welsh said the work of firefighters was not finished. “The fire is still estimated at 1.7 hectares in size,” said Welsh. “Today, we still have 13 firefighters actioning this wildfire.” Forestry officials estimate lightning across B.C. on the weekend spawned more than 50 new blazes. Since April, more than 1,100 wildfires have burned 86 square kilometres of backcountry since April. So far this year, the province has spent $86 million fighting wildfires.

Medical chart mistakes lead to needless mastectomy, biopsy By Geordon Omand
THE CANADIAN PRESS
HALIFAX - The head of Nova Scotia’s largest health authority is apologizing after lab mistakes earlier this year led to one patient receiving an unnecessary mastectomy and another undergoing a needless biopsy. “Mistakes happen and this is one of those very unfortunate, devastating times,” said Chris Power, president and CEO of the Capital District Health Authority, which is responsible for health care in the Halifax area and part of a neighbouring county. In late April, pathology results were switched on charts for two patients, leading to one patient needlessly losing a breast and the other
not being scheduled for the necessary surgery. In the second case, which happened a month later, Power said a diagnostic biopsy was conducted on the wrong patient after slides were mislabelled with incorrect patient identification. Asked why the health authority waited nearly four months to go public with the information, Power said: “We were sensitive to (the patients’) needs and we wanted to be sure that they got through this part of their treatment and care before we made it public.” The errors affected four patients, two who were misdiagnosed with cancer and given needless treatment, and two who were mistaken-
ly told they did not have cancer and failed to receive the treatment they required. The mistakes were detected in laboratories at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre in Halifax, where samples from the entire health authority are collected to be processed and analyzed. An oversight system - referred to as a quality assurance mechanism compares all processed tissue from before and after a surgery to ensure they are the same. “What’s supposed to happen is they match,” said Power. “But in this case they didn’t and that’s when we were alerted that we have a problem here.” The health authority
said in a news release it is confident it has identified the only affected patients after reviewing other tissues taken during that time period. Since the incidents, Power said Capital Health has conducted two internal reviews, reviewed standard operating procedures and investigated best practices worldwide. “As devastating as this was for our patients it’s been a hugely difficult time for our staff who were involved as well,” said Power. “Nobody wants this to happen.” Power said the introduction of bar codes later this year and an automated laboratory system in 2014 will lower the likelihood of similar mistakes happening.
Alberta to fund treatment for girl, 3, with rare enzyme deficiency By Dean Bennett
THE CANADIAN PRESS
EDMONTON - The family of a three-yearold Alberta girl learned Monday she will receive a potentially life-saving drug for a disease that is causing cellular waste to build up in her joints and around her heart. The province announced it will fund enzyme replacement therapy for Aleena Sadownyk of St. Albert, just outside Edmonton. “It was very emotional,” Aleena’s father, Dane Sadownyk, said in an interview. “The first thing I did was pick up my daughter and give her a huge hug. “It’s been a challenging and a tough road.” A panel of medical experts with Alberta Health Services made the decision to fund the drug Naglazyme for Aleena. Health Minister Fred Horne did not intervene in the decision, saying it needed to be made for medical reasons alone, but agreed it was a good day for the Sadownyk
family. “Obviously for the family it’s a positive outcome,” said Horne. “These decisions are difficult, and we face more and more of them all the time in Canada as we have more drugs becoming available to treat rare ... diseases.” The drug costs $300,000 or more per year for children, and because the dosage is tied to weight, can rise to $1 million a year for adults. Those on it are on it for life as the drug does not cure the illness, but simply stops it from worsening. The Sadownyks had been working with the province since the spring, after Aleena was diagnosed with Maroteaux-Lamy syn-
drome, also known as MPS VI.
“It’s been a challenging and a tough road.” Dane Sadownyk
MPS VI patients lack the enzyme in blood that breaks down cellular waste. The waste then accumulates in the bones, tissues, and organs, leading to stiffened joints, heart and airway blockages, and potential death. Dane said he and his wife, Laura, noticed something was wrong with Aleena - their middle child of three children - when she had trouble raising her arms, touching her

shoulder or making a fist. “We initially just thought she had arthritis because it does run in our family,” he said. As they learned more about the disease they got in touch with Andrew McFadyen, who advocates for fam-
ilies dealing with MPS VI, to get funding for Naglazyme, which acts as an artificial enzyme to break down the cellular waste. The drug is permitted in special cases in Canada and is paid for in B.C., Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec.

Another round of liquor reforms
T
he B.C. Liberal government is ordering up another round of liquor regulation changes, looking for ways to make life easier for businesses and customers without aggravating the health and social problems associated with alcohol. Discussions with B.C.’s 10,000 liquor licence holders have identified a few problems that should be fixed. Going into a consultation phase that runs to October, the government is looking for answers to a few obvious questions, such as why it takes a pub or bar up to a year to get a licence. Another question: why can a family with underaged children go into a licensed restaurant for lunch, but can’t go to a pub and place the exact same food and drink order? This should be allowed, perhaps until the traditional 5 p.m. “happy hour” when the pub reverts to adults-only.
A couple of suggestions have come out of the healthy growth of B.C. wine, craft beer and distillery operations. Look for new licence opportunities for farmers’ markets to sell local beverages along with the produce and preserves. Letters inviting suggestions from existing licence holders have gone out, and Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap will be meeting this fall with industry groups, local governments, police, health and social policy organizations and First Nations in the fall. A website will be put up in September so members of the public can have their say. Here’s my suggestion to start things off. Recent incidents involving so-called “party buses” shone a light on this growing industry, The sudden death of a 16-year-old on a party bus outing in Surrey in February turned out not to be alcohol-related, but
to no one’s surprise, open liquor was found aboard the bus. Open liquor isn’t allowed in any vehicle, but perhaps
TOM
FLETCHER B.C. Views
a new kind of special event licence could be created for party buses. They have been viewed mainly as part of the solution to impaired driving, and the situation isn’t much different from a supervised event on a boat. Here’s another suggestion. Gourmet cooking classes are becoming popu-
lar, with customers preparing and then enjoying their meals. Why not licence these establishments, at least so people can bring their own wine for dinner? Both the B.C. Liberals and NDP have advocated for easing the archaic rules on inter-provincial trade in wine. B.C. lifted its restrictions on mail-order wine and has urged other provinces to follow suit. There are a couple of reasons why this Prohibitionera structure persists. Liquor sales are a cash cow for provincial governments, and every case of wine brought in from elsewhere is lost profit for the provincial wholesale monopoly. Then there is the local industry lobby that would rather not add to its competition. Premier Christy Clark pressed this point at the recent premiers’ meeting in Ontario wine country, bringing in the max-
imum amount of B.C. wine allowed under Ontario rules and urging free trade in Canadian wine. The Toronto media drank it up, aghast that they were barred from ordering the latest Naramata Bench tipples directly. No movement so far from the Ontario government, in a province that has done well developing its own wine industry. The B.C. government will no doubt be lobbied again to allow beer and wine sales in grocery and convenience stores. Our politicians show little interest in that, which is understandable. The B.C. Liberals don’t want to upset the private liquor stores they have nurtured for a decade, and the NDP would never risk annoying the government liquor store union. LETTERS & OPINION LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Nova Scotia’s crackdown on cyberbullying goes too far An editorial from the Toronto Star, published Aug. 11: Canadians were appalled by the bullying Rehtaeh Parsons suffered and the suicidal depression that followed. Her death, at only 17, embarrassed the Nova Scotia government and prompted it to rush a draconian law against cyberbullying onto the books. Now, in a move that has given Rehtaeh’s family what her father calls “a bit of relief,” prosecutors have finally charged two young men with making and distributing child pornography involving her, almost two years after the fact. Rehtaeh hanged herself on April 4, after a long battle with suicidal thoughts, and died days later. Her ordeal began on Nov. 12, 2011, when she was just 15. A sexually explicit cellphone photo of her taken at a party was passed around the town of Cole Harbour and her high school through email and social media. Students called her a “slut,” friends snubbed her, and boys propositioned her. Her father says Rehtaeh was “disappointed to death” by the community. On her Facebook page she lamented “the silence of our friends.” She drifted into her fatal depression after police looked into claims that she had been sexually assaulted, and into the photo, but prosecutors decided that no charges would be laid. After her death police announced that they had “new
and credible information” and reopened the case. This tragedy has shed yet more light on the cruelty of bullying, including cyberbullying. But in its zeal to take a tough stand the Nova Scotia government has saddled the province with a Cyber-Safety Act that it may come to regret as an excessive infringement on free speech and due process. The Criminal Code is stuffed with provisions that can and should be used more than they are to prosecute bullying, including cyberbullying. Offences such as stalking, harassment and defamation come to mind. In Rehtaeh’s case, child pornography laws were invoked. But Nova Scotia’s new provincial statute, which came into force this past week, goes further. Well-intentioned though it is, it unwisely defines cyberbullying in overly broad terms as “any electronic communication . . . that is intended or ought reasonably be expected to cause fear, intimidation, humiliation, distress or other damage or harm to another person’s health, emotional well-being, self-esteem or reputation.” The Star gets letters to the editor every day whose very point is to cause humiliation and distress to people with whom the writers disagree, if not to undermine their selfesteem and reputation. Are all of these people cyberbullies? There’s something called free
speech in this country. The new law crowds it. There’s more. If anyone, including an adult, feels that he or she is being bullied online, they, their parents, police or officials in a new provincial anti-bullying unit can ask a judge to issue ex parte protection orders, without hearing from the alleged bully. Major consequences follow. The alleged bully can be gagged from saying anything about his accuser. He or she can be barred from using electronic communication devices. His computers and smart phones can be confiscated. His Internet service can be cut off. And officials can seize records of everything he has done online, and any texts he has sent or received. The orders can be imposed for a full year. And people can be jailed for as much as two years and fined $5,000 for failing to comply. Those are heavy sanctions on the basis of an untested allegation of wrongdoing. As well, victims can sue cyberbullies or their parents if the bullies are minors. Invoking the Criminal Code against tormenters makes sense. If anything, the police should be more zealous in this regard. But the same can’t be said for inflicting the CyberSafety Act on an entire province, with its overly broad sweep, its risks to free speech and due process, and its draconian sanctions. There has to be a better way to protect people.
Group not living up to its name An editorial from the St. John’s Telegram The REAL of REAL Women stands for “Realistic, Equal, Active, for Life.” But the Canadian profamily group proved last week it is none of those things. On Wednesday, REAL Women issued a press release saying Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird should butt out when it comes to other countries’ policies on
homosexuality. The group said Baird “has abused his position as a cabinet minister to impose his own special interests in the foreign countries of Uganda, Kenya and Russia.” Russia recently passed legislation banning the “promotion” of homosexuality to children. It’s been seen at home and abroad as a wideranging crackdown on free expression. Western nations,
including Canada, have condemned the law, and many voices have called for a boycott of the Russian Winter Olympics in Sochi next year. REAL?Women began as a countermovement to modern feminism, but quickly morphed into an ultraconservative fringe group. It eschews any deviation from an idealistic “Leave it to Beaver” concept of family, condemning everything from abor-
tion rights to single parenthood. Wednesday’s release should not even have been top news, save for the sheer offensiveness of the message. “Just who does John Baird think he is, using taxpayers’ money to promote his own personal agenda and endeavouring to set standards of the laws of foreign countries?” Gwendolyn Landolt, national vicepresident, asked in the release.

HILLARY CLINTON
Fights over planned TV programs draw unwanted attention BY KEN THOMAS
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
WASHINGTON - Hillary Rodham Clinton’s effort to carefully craft her post-Cabinet image has hit a few bumps. A sexting scandal in the New York City mayoral race and a federal investigation that’s roiling the Virginia governor’s race are recalling politically problematic chapters of her past. Republicans are amplifying the parallels while also making a separate stink about television programs that CNN and NBC are developing about the former first lady and secretary of state. The GOP contends that the media are promot-
ing Clinton’s image ahead of a potential White House campaign. It all adds up to a dose of unwanted attention, if not a distraction, for someone trying to maintain a golden image among Democrats during a respite that could precede a second presidential bid. While Clinton has tried to maintain a relatively low profile this summer, her aides have found themselves having to answer for her family’s connections to the two campaigns. The two campaigns probably will not have a lasting impact on her political profile after two decades in the spotlight.

Trail native wins Birchbank Open Roller Girls veto Vendettas Roller derby

In a stunning display of shot making and execution on the greens, Dan Dupuis made a triumphant return to his home course by shooting a seven-under par 65 in the third and final round to win the 68th annual Birchbank Men’s Open. Dupuis, who was born and raised in Trail but now lives in Powell River, shot a 72 Friday, a 68 Saturday and finished with a scorching 65 Sunday, to go 11-under par to claim the Birchbank championship. “I’m very happy with the round,” said Dupuis. “It was a solid round, not many mistakes out there today, it was really good.” Over 100 golfers teed off on Friday for the three-day event, as well as 35 in the newly created Senior’s division. Dupuis, who played six years as a pro on the Canadian Tour, went into the final round tied at -4 with Edinburgh, Scotland native Finlay Young. Kevin Hogg, and 17-year-old Tyler McKay of Rossland rounded out the final foursome entering the final day with identical scores of -1. Starting on the back nine, Young and Dupuis both birdied the opening hole. However, Dupuis continued to capitalize, taking the lead for good with birdies on 14 and 18 to go to -7 at the turn, while Young would falter with bogies on 15 and 17. Yet, the young Scot would make a move on the back nine, scoring back-to-back birdies on three and four to move within two strokes of the leader. However,

showed no mercy as they piled on more points to take the final score to 201-141. In the second bout of the night, Castlegar’s Dam City Rollers were amped up to take on the undefeated Nelson Killjoys. “High energy and power isn’t a problem for this team,” said line caller Mr. Pro-pain. The tricky part, he suggested, was in getting them to dial it back a bit. Even to the untrained eye, the second part of the doubleheader was a much more physical affair than the first, with the Dam City Rollers doing their best to live up to their “rough and tumble” reputation. A huge power jam from the Rollers had them up 30 points with 12 minutes to play but the lead narrowed to just four with just under five minutes to go, after #91-Kitty Karnage took her seventh penalty and headed to the dressing room. In the end the Killjoys showed why they were undefeated as they mustered a final push to take the final score to 224-178. Still, there were a lot of smiles from the exhausted Rollers as they milled about after the match. “I feel so unbelievable,” said the Rollers’ Jinjoe Fight-Us. “There’s a reason this team is undefeated and we pushed as hard as anyone has. We were leading the whole game until the end.” A makeup game is tentatively scheduled between the Dam City Rollers and Valley Vendettas, however, dates and times were unavailable at press time.
If the roller derby doubleheader at Selkirk College on Friday was an indicator of things to come, Rossland is going to be rocking on Sept. 8 when the fourth annual Mountain Mayhem tournament gets underway. The Rossland-Trail Roller Girls went up against the Valley Vendettas in the first match to help determine which four teams will be going to the Rossland finals. RTRG had the luxury of eight more skaters than their opponents in the first bout of the evening, but despite being outnumbered, the Vendettas put on a spirited display. The score was close through 30 minutes, with RTRG up 94 - 62 after the first half. Once fans had a chance to refresh with a visit to the barbecue and beverage garden, the extra firepower of RTRG started to become apparent as their lead consistently increased in the second half. One standout performance from the RTRG jammers came from Kaylee Barclay aka Bark Messier, who relied on pure speed to pile on points during power jams (when the opposing team jammer is in the penalty box). “She’s a hockey player,” explained #669-Jinjoe Fight-Us for the Dam City Rollers who was watching the Jim Bailey photo action while applying her face paint. Dan Dupuis stuck this tee-shot to within a foot of pin on the par-3 fourth, on “She’s a great skater.” his way to shooting a 65 and winning the Birchbank Open title on Sunday. Raonic yields to Nadal in Rogers Cup final be ranked 10th in the world when the next rankings appear Monday morning, making him the first Canadian to crack the top-10. He will be the youngest player in the top 10 as well. “The tournament overall was a great thing,” the 22-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., said. “There were a lot of situations that I’m very happy with the way I dealt with them, and there were a lot of learning experiences through it all. “A lot of stepping stones that I need to do in my career happened this week, so that’s great. THE CANADIAN PRESS MONTREAL - Milos Raonic called it a learning experience. It certainly wasn’t the victory party the Uniprix Stadium crowd was hoping for as Rafael Nadal took only one hour eight minutes to down Canada’s top tennis player 6-2, 6-2 in the US$3.49 million Rogers Cup final on Sunday. But it had taken 55 years for a Canadian just to get to the final of the country’s biggest tournament, so Raonic had much to celebrate despite the defeat. For one, by reaching the final he will

five got to the second round. Then Raonic and Vernon native Vasek Pospisil became the first two Canadians to make the semifinals of an ATP Tour tournament since Andrew Sznajder and Martin Wostenholme in 1990 in Rio de Janeiro. They played each other in a semifinal, a cliffhanger that went to a third-set tiebreaker. So the one-sided loss in the final stung, but it was still a big week as he made the final for the first time in a Masters series event, one level below the grand slams. Raonic had worn different coloured Davis Cup-style shirts with a maple leaf over the heart all week, but saved a red-and-white one for the final.

He’s still young. He’s having great results. Nadal, one of the world’s best who was playing for the first time since his first-round loss at Wimbledon in June, posted his eighth tournament win this year and the 58th of his career. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Darius Rucker has hit the top of the charts both as frontman for Hootie and the Blowfish and as a country artist. And now, he has a street named after him. The street leading to the North Charleston Coliseum in South Carolina where Hootie and the Blowfish played in the 1990s shortly after it opened was renamed Darius Rucker Boulevard on Monday. Rucker grew up in the Charleston area and was on hand for the ceremony. Rucker says he may return to the coliseum this fall to play a country set. But first he plays with Hootie and the Blowfish next week.

TV LISTINGS Teen choice awards
Lea Michele tearfully thanks fans there how much all of your love and support has meant to me over these very difficult past few weeks,” she said. She dedicated the award to Monteith saying, “For all of you out there who loved and admired Cory as much as I did, I promise that with your love we’re gonna get through this together. He was very special to me and also to the world.” She went on to say that “We were very lucky to witness his incredible talent, his handsome smile and his beautiful, beautiful heart so whether you know him personally or just as (his ‘Glee’ character) Finn Hudson, Cory reached out and he became a part of all of our hearts.” “Glee” also won Choice TV Comedy and cast member Amber Reilly said, “Although we lost someone that we really love . . . we are very fortunate to come back to a show where we feel the love of family and Cory was like a brother to us.”

Lea Michele made her first public appearance following the death of her co-star and real-life boyfriend Cory Monteith at the Teen Choice Awards. Monteith, who co-hosted the Teen Choice Awards in 2010, was found dead July 13 in Vancouver, British Columbia. An autopsy revealed the 31-year-old actor died of an overdose of heroin and alcohol. He and Michele played an on-again, off-again couple in the popular Fox series “Glee” and previously dated off-screen. Michele won Choice TV Actress in a comedy for her role on “Glee” and took the stage tearfully Sunday address the audience while wearing a necklace that said “Cory.” “I just wanted to be here today to personally thank all of you and tell everyone out

checks for the bookstore and tuition. 3. Only the student should go to registration. Do not take parents, grandparents, siblings, children or friends. Small children have unplugged my computer and vomited in my office. “Helicopter” parents have been some of our worst headaches. They make nasty comments about the cost of tuition and books, over which I have no control, and it embarrasses their kids. 4. Read all of the signs with directions and instructions. I am the last step of the registration process, and I usually have to send 15 percent of the kids back
from when our daughter was an adolescent. For the past few years, they have gotten along better, but I always sensed a dark cloud on the horizon. We visited our daughter last week. Everything went well until the day before we left. My wife made some offhand comment, my daughter overreacted, and it went downhill from there. They are not talking to each other now. My wife tends to be hypercritical, and my daughter doesn’t know how to deal with it. I try to play peacemaker, but I don’t like being in the middle, and neither of them listens to me. Any ideas? -- Caught in the Middle Dear Caught: If your wife and daughter truly wish to change this dysfunctional pattern, it likely will require professional counseling to figure out how to behave in a more productive way. You can suggest it, but other-
wise, we recommend you stay out of the middle and maintain these relationships individually. Dear Annie: “Open but Lost” had an open marriage, and you astutely asked whether her husband really wanted it.
My wife wanted an open marriage based on advice received from her support group. I agreed reluctantly. I painfully experienced having to hear phone calls from her suitors. The bottom line was that I experienced a total loss of trust and commitment,
and it finally led to our divorce. Years later, my ex apologized to me for what she had done and asked for my forgiveness. I’ve been happily married to my second wife for 21 years. My ex is on her fourth marriage. -- Not the Thing To Do

Go to the first day of class even if you have not paid. That is when instructors go over expectations and explain assignments. Some even lecture. I want my students to be successful. Dear Annie: It is back-to-school time for millions of young people. I am an instructor at a community college and would like to offer some suggestions to make the registration process smoother for students. 1. See the school counselor at least two weeks before registration. If you wait until registration week, the counselors will be extremely busy. 2. College is not free. Scholarships and grants must be applied for months in advance, not the day of registration. If you do not have the paperwork in your hand, be prepared to pay. The payout plan offered by my school must be linked to a credit card or bank account. Check with the school ahead of time to be sure you have the required information for checks or credit cards. My school requires about seven pieces of information. You will need separate
