Lisa Aasebo Although from Vancouver, Lisa has a deep love for the Kootenay’s and all of its cultural offerings. Lisa began her fascination with this beautiful community while performing for three summer seasons at Fort Steele Heritage Town. In the summer of 2011 she performed for Kimberley Summer Theatre in ‘Lend Me a Tenor’, ‘Secrets every Smart Traveller should know’ and the brand new daytime Platzl shows. Lisa officially took on the role of Artistic Director of The Wildhorse Theatre at Fort Steele Heritage Town and ran a never before attempted, full theatre season! Lisa has now turned her focus to opening her own Children’s Theatre Companies with ‘Creative Monkey’s Children’s Programmes’ for 2-11 year olds, and ‘Theatre Boot Camp’ for 12-17 year olds, right here in the East Kootenays. Lisa has professionally trained in both the Theatre and Musical Theatre Programs at Capilano University in North Vancouver. She has toured Western Canada with 2 seasons of Jubilations Dinner Theatre, performed for over 25 years on stages and film sets throughout ‘The Coast’, and in between, spent many hours teaching and creating theatre for young people in Dance Studios, Rec Centres and Elementary Schools.

Internationally Proven

Playball has proven itself in many countries over 25 years to become recognized as a unique and invaluable sports coaching program for young children. Tens of thousands of children in Australia, America, Canada, England, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa are benefiting from the many rewards of the Playball program.

Scientifically Designed Program

The Playball Program is the result of many years of Research & Development. The Playball Head Office team created the Playball Sports Program by researching the developmental needs of 2 to 8 year olds through consultation with child development professionals. Playball understands the importance of teaching the right skills at the right time, so that children can develop a strong base of foundation skills on which to build. Not only do we understand which activities are best for each age group and developmental stage but Playball’s holistic approach helps children to function in their everyday lives as confident and able individuals. Playball’s objectives are to develop a child in all aspects; physical, emotional, social and intellectual. We use sport as the means to teach all of these essential life skills. Playball Instructor

Dane Ries

Anne-Marie Genis

Owner and Coach of Playball Calgary I’m privileged to be involved for the last 3 years in fostering the Playball Methodology in developing an all rounded child by teaching life skills through sport skills. Playball has been in operation in preschools, kindergartens and sport centers with over 500 students involved. Playball gave me the opportunity to combine my love for sport with my teaching background. The aim of Playball is to teach children competency in the class room, on the playground and on the sports field.

www.cranbrook.ca

My name is Dane Ries, I’m 20 years old and have lived in Cranbrook for 14 years. After graduation I’ve been enrolled at the College of the Rockies, and most recently SAIT taking kinesiology courses. When I was in Calgary I discovered Playball. I have always been quite athletic and involved with sports since I was young. With Playball, I thought it was the perfect opportunity to continue my love of sport by teaching others. I was introduced to Anne Marie and we were able to make a great partnership right off the bat. After my year in Calgary we had kept in touch and thought of bringing Playball to Cranbrook. I couldn’t think of any better idea, I had falling in love with the program and love seeing what it can really do in children’s lives.

The 4 R’s, REFUSE - REUSE - REDUCE - RECYCLE Pitch-In 2013

From its modest beginnings in 1967, PITCH-IN CANADA is now leading a multi-faceted approach to “litter” and overall proper waste management practices. These practices include: the 4 R’s, REFUSE - REUSE REDUCE - RECYCLE, personal responsibility, community sustainability and beautification. Through the use of education, community participation and partnerships with the corporate and government sectors, PITCH-IN CANADA works with all Canadians interested, to maintain a clean, green and beautiful country. Pitch-In was held in Cranbrook April 21-27 and was a successful event. Local schools participated in cleaning up their school fields and surrounding areas, and many other city residents pitched in to pick-up litter around their neighbourhoods and place of business. Amy Woodland was the winning school that collected the most litter and won a free swim for the whole school at the Aquatic Centre on June 26. Volunteers from the Baha’I Community showed their civic pride by cleaning up several areas of the city including empty lots around Home Depot and Walmart, and all of the Industrial area roads. In total, the group collected 67 bags, 2 boxes full, 4 tires and 5 signs. Way to go, and thank you from the City of Cranbrook!

This is the bank north of Home Depot and west of Walmart. The Baha’I Community picked 22 bags off the bank this year.

Bike Skills Park bumps, jumps & pump track

There is a new bike skills park located at Balment Park beside the Viking Skateboard Park. It is free for anyone use and opened this past May. Children, teens and adults of all ages have been using the new park and enjoying its features. Planning for the bike park began in the fall of 2010. The Cranbrook Bike Skills Park Society was formed in the spring of 2011 and began working with the full support of the City of Cranbrook on location, licensing, insurance, process, etc. The funding drive started in 2012 when successfully acquired a $30,000 grant from Columbia Basin Trust through Cranbrook Community Initiatives. Local businesses donated dirt, equipment, supplies and time to allow the Society to spend two days installing a water line and shed, then three days this May with the builder and volunteers building the park. Equipment was on site for three more days to complete some final features and hydro-seeding. There are beginner bumps through to extra large jumps for expert riders so there is something for everyone including those interested in pumps tracks. The expert pump track is currently ridable but requiring some maintenance while the beginner pump track is still under construction during the development of this publication. A garbage can, bench and sign are still to come. We strongly recommend anyone using the jumps and pump track wear helmets, protective gear and ride within their abilities. The park is unsupervised and riders assume the risk of any injury that may occur. Users are maintaining the park and many are following the dirt jumper credo of “No dig, No ride”.

Viewing Deck The viewing deck is an area for individuals who want to watch the pool activities. It is a great place to read or visit with a friend while your kids are swimming. This is the only location on the poolside where health standards allow street clothing and shoes. Please be advised that No food is allowed in this area but there are seats and tables in the lobby. Please do not use the viewing deck as an entrance or exit to the pool, or as an area to change your children. For the safety of all our visitors, camera and video use is restricted and requires supervision by staff. Please ask one of our staff before using a camera.

Change Room Parents changing children over five years of age of the opposite gender must use the family change room. Please do not leave your belongings in the family change rooms while you are swimming. It is strongly advised to lock up all belongings. There are lockers available for 25 cents. Pool For everyone’s safety and health, please use

dedicated deck shoes or bare feet while walking from the change rooms to poolside. To maintain clear water conditions and to keep the water filter system working optimally, please have a cleansing shower before entering the pools. Children in diapers must wear an approved swim diaper with a tight fitting swim suit or plastic diaper cover. For your convenience, we sell disposable and Gabby’s reusable swim diapers at the front desk. Children under seven years of age must be within arms reach of a parent or guardian sixteen years of age or older at all times. There is a maximum ratio of one parent or guardian to three children under the age of seven. Although our public swim often runs for a continuous block of time, it is advised that children take a break after a maximum of two hours in the pool to rest and rehydrate.

Waterslide The BCSA and the Safety Code for Amusement Rides and Devices Act have implemented regulations for the use of our waterslide. • A child must be 42” tall to ride the waterslide. • No double sliding will be permitted at all - including parents and small children.

Why wear shoes?

Meet

Shea Deal Hi, I’m Shea, I’m kind of a big Deal! I have been a lifeguard/instructor here at the pool for almost 6 years. I love working with the public, especially when I get to teach swimming lessons, fitness classes and leadership programs. We also have an amazing staff at the Cranbrook Aquatic Centre so it makes my job a joy every day.

Aquatic shoes provide the wearer with more stability and traction for an upright stance when moving through the water. They reduce the effects of impact when jumping in shallow water and add resistance in deep and shallow water, thereby further helping build strength. They help to prevent accidental slips on the deck and in the pool. They also help protect the feet from infection and protect the joints from impact. What kind of shoes can you wear? Old trainers (as long as they are clean!), surf walkers, sport sandals, or specific shoes made for aquatic fitness. Ask any of our aquafit instructors where to buy these types of shoes, they will be happy to assist you!

If I were a mermaid, what would I wear to math class? ...... An algae-bra! j
