The Creston Valley’s approach to attracting new physicians to the area has won recognition and accolades. And it’s now about to be featured in a provincial recruiting film being made to supplement efforts to address the doctor shortage.

A film crew visited Creston on Friday, shooting footage of Dr. Susan Hopkins,

who chose Creston as her family’s new home last year. She was actively courted by what is now the Health Working Group and recruiter Marilin States. The program is jointly funded by the Town of Creston and Regional District of Central Kootenay areas B and C. Health Match BC, the agency designated to fill health care vacancies around the province, is now creating a film to promote the benefits of working in B.C.

“The film is being produced to showcase B.C. to physicians practicing in the United Kingdom through the eyes and experiences of physicians who have located to our provinces,” States said. “Dr. Hopkins was one of three physicians chosen to appear in the film — the other two are males, one in a large urban community and another in a small rural community with no hospital.

In a performance that might have been inspired by Olympic bronze medallist Antoine Valois-Fortier, Creston’s Kaeden Rendek has brought home a silver medal from the 2013 Canadian Judo Championships.

Valois-Fortier spent three days in Creston in April, presenting a series of seminars at the Creston Judo Club. He brought his Olympic medal, too.

Rendek dutifully opens the case that holds his Canadian Judo Championships silver medal and beams.

The medal, about the size of a beer coaster, and much, much heavier, is a first for Creston. The 12-year-old judoka is this area’s first-ever national medallist in his chosen sport.

“It isn’t as heavy as Antoine’s,” laughs Kaeden’s father, Terry Rendek, “but it’s beautiful, isn’t it?”

The lead-up to Kaeden’s medalwinning efforts came after nearly a year of travel to tournaments in Prince George, Edmonton, Montreal, Fernie, Invermere, Regina and five in the Lower Mainland.

John Mabbott, executive director of Health Match BC, said on Tuesday that Creston was selected to be featured in the film for three reasons.

“First, Dr. Hopkins is a perfect subject, being British and having a family with her in Creston.

Second, Marilin States was available to assist the film crew with the logistics and, third, and certainly not least, Creston is a gorgeous setting.”

Mabbott said the film will be available on the Health Match BC website and YouTube when complete.

“We are renewing our marketing materials and we try to show each rural area in B.C.,” he said. “A video like this helps put the icing on the cake when we are showing doctors in Canada and in other countries what we have to offer, both in the way of their practise and in lifestyle.”

Hopkins first connected with Health Match BC when she was considering a move to Canada. She graduated from University of Birmingham Medical School in England and practised in the United Kingdom until she and her husband started talking about relocating with their two children. They wanted more of an outdoor lifestyle, she told the Advance in an article written prior to her arrival in Creston last May. Hopkins had visited several Kootenay communities on an earlier tour that included Creston. She had already heard from States, who wrote to extol the virtues of the Creston Valley, its culture and geography.

“While I was in Creston I was impressed by the sense of community that came from everyone I met,” she said in the Advance article. “Marilin was a great host and I had the chance to meet some of the physicians in town, who gave me the impression they worked hard but also had a good worklife balance and were enjoying raising their families in the valley. We think that the climate and spectacular surroundings will make for the perfect place for our family to grow up.”

Movie camera rolling, Hopkins ducked into the changing room and emerged in her bathing suit.

She slipped into the busy pool and joined her children, a regular Friday routine for the family. They made several trips around the lazy river water feature, which was filled with yellow plastic ducks, as it is every Friday morning.

Earlier, she was filmed at Skimmerhorn Winery, where the agricultural aspects of the Creston Valley are in full and dramatic view, as are the Skimmerhorn mountains, which loom over Canyon to the east.

“The health working group is a good investment by the town and RDCK directors,” Mayor Ron Toyota commented. “It shows what we can do when we all work togeter.”

Community resource centre earns three-year accreditation

Eighteen months of hard work paid off for the Creston and District Community Resource Centre (CRC), which was recently told it earned a three-year accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities.

Accreditation is required when an organization receives over $500,000 from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, which funds the majority of the CRC’s $1.2 million budget.

“The accreditation process is intended to indicate that the organization is dedicated and committed to improving the equality of the lives of the people the organization serves,” said board chair Rita Scott. “It clearly shows the services, personnel and

documentation establish a pattern of practiced excellence.”

Led by executive director Serena Naeve, finance and administration manager Justine Keirn and clinical supervisor Colleen Deatherage, the CRC’s staff and management worked overtime and weekends to ensure programs met CARF standards.

That was no small matter. While some small communities have a halfdozen or less programs, the CRC runs 27, 13 of which required accreditation — meaning that each program in the areas of counseling, children in adolescence, early childhood development, intensive family based services, and promotion and prevention programming had to meet 1,300 internationally-recognized standards for administration and direct services.

community, the accreditation process was extremely time consuming and complex,” said Scott. “I’m so impressed with the dedication and industry that went into this.”

The outcome wasn’t assured — upon completing the review, an agency can receive accreditation for one or three years, or none at all. That the CRC earned three years is not only a matter of pride, it comes with the hope that the review process will be simpler when its accreditation expires in June 2016.

“It will be a question of maintaining and building on what’s been accomplished at this point,” said Scott.

And it should make it easier for the CRC to leverage other funds with the goal of providing additional services to the Creston Valley.

“It assures funders, clients and community partners that we’re doing things right,” said Scott.

Creston RCMP destroy over 1,200 pot plants Creston RCMP responded to 84 calls for service from July 29-Aug. 4, Const. Dave Skretting said on Tuesday.

July 29 •A male reported to be harassing a female on Eighth Avenue North was warned.

•The dumping of trash at the end of 28th Street in Lister has been referred to conservation officers.

•A green 15-foot Ram X canoe, two paddles and lifejackets were stolen from the Riondel campground.

•A driver distracted by conversation lost control of his vehicle in the 1200 block of Highway 3 and went off the road. An occupant was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

•A motorcyclist lost control of his bike on Highway 3A near Armstrong Road, sliding into a concrete barrier.

He suffered minor injuries.

•Two intoxicated male trespassers on Seventh Avenue South were

located and warned.

July 30 •A Second Avenue resident threatened on Facebook to harm himself, but he was taken care of by friends.

•A male was reported to be camping on the old Pioneer Villa property but was not located by police. More campers were reported later, but not located.

•No injuries to humans were reported after a vehicle collided with a deer on Highway 3 at Kitchener Airport Road.

•A complaint was made about vehicles parking on the shoulder of Highway 3 in Erickson.

•Police were called about a dispute over ownership of a horse at Kootenay Bay. •The first of several outdoor marijuana grow-op take-downs occurred in the Gray Creek area, where 257 plants were destroyed.

•A male reported having cash stolen, but admitted that it might have been lost.

•A cellphone was reported to have been lost on Highway 21 near

Goat River Road on July 14th.

•A male who camped on private property called 911 to report he was being attacked by the female landowner. Police investigated and learned she was packing up his camping gear to force him to leave, which he did.

•An outdoor marijuana grow-op near Sirdar was dismantled and 163 plants were destroyed.

•A female was arrested and held overnight in police cells following a dispute with a male on Nelson Street in Kitchener.

•Two unwanted male visitors to a Cook Street residence left before police arrived.

From page 1 “I had a lot of qualifiers — I had to go to Saskatchewan to fight in the Saskatchewan Open Championships with the B.C. team,” Kaeden said on Friday. “I won both of my matches and I won a gold medal. That pushed me farther and farther ahead of my competitors in B.C., and when I went to regional tournaments I would beat them and that would put me higher in points. To qualify for the nationals, it’s all about points.”

The Canadian nationals were held at the Richmond Olympic Oval, constructed to host speed skating events in the 2010 Winter Olympics.

With four mats in the arena (a single mat is all that the Adam Robertson Elementary School gym can hold), two skating rinks, a dozen or two ping-pong tables, a huge fitness centre and four basketball courts, the Richmond facility might have felt a little overwhelming — especially with as many as 5,000 attending the fights.

“I really cancelled out the crowd until the last match,” Kaeden said. “We’ve done a lot of focusing exercise and practice, so I eventually just blocked out the crowd.”

After spending two days doing warmups and watching older competitors in the U-18 and U-21 age divisions, Kaeden said he was ready for action on day 3. “[For my] first match I walked out and I was kind of nervous, but I Xed out the crowd and just stared at my opponent. I threw him for an ippon, which was a win — he landed flat on his back. I felt comfortable after getting all those butterflies out — I just wanted to get onto the next match.

“For my second match I warmed up and I watched my opponent’s previous match to study what he was doing. My coaches came down and we diagnosed it. We discussed how I could counter and what throws would be good for me to use against him. I went in and he had a really tough gi (uniform). I grabbed him and bent my nails back. It was like grabbing a brick wall and I had to fight through the pain. I grabbed him — and this is something my sensei and I had been practicing — I tightened up on his arm and flipped out his leg.

And I got the win, which I was pretty proud of, because my dad told me earlier when we checked the U-15 brackets (18 fighters in total) — ‘Two fights and you’re in; you can get a medal.’ ” With two wins under his belt, the reality of his situation began to set in.

“I finished my second match and I was so proud and happy, then I started thinking about my final match and I was like, ‘I don’t know if I can win this.’ I tried to believe in myself, though.

“Once I got on the mat I was rid of all my butterflies. I was warmed up and ready to go. We fought all the way to regulation time — three minutes. Then, 2:42 into the overtime round, he threw me. Just before that, I threw him and that

Public should have more input on PAWS funding To the Editor: Recent advertisements in the Creston Valley Advance (page 8, Aug. 1 issue) inform everyone in Creston and Regional District of Central Kootenay areas A, B and C that the RDCK plans a special annual tax upon them to support the Creston Pet Adoption and Welfare Society (PAWS) unless at least 980 persons indicate objection by signing a special form in opposition. PAWS is a charity that looks after unwanted animals, comparable to the SPCA but without the euthanasia option. Like other local charities, it needs funding to keep going and publicly campaign for funds. I don’t know much about its workings but accept it as a good charity for our area.

The ads are to allow the RDCK to later claim the public approved the new tax before it was levied.

I am very uncomfortable, however, with the way the RDCK is arranging for ongoing support of PAWS out of public funds. It is normal practice when levying a new tax to first have it discussed publicly and/or hold a referendum. Yet the alternative approval process (AAP) that introduces this tax to claim public approval only gives everyone less than six weeks notice and assumes that if enough people don’t formally object in that time then the voter majority must be in approval. This process is similar to “negative option billing”, which the federal government banned in 1999 for businesses. That practice, which involved companies arbitrarily adding new services to existing customers and

charging them while claiming that the consumers ordered the services because they were given the chance to opt out but didn’t respond in time, is underhanded and is listed as an unfair practice by B.C.’s Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act. It is not illegal in the case of the RDCK, as regulations say governments can do it.

The RDCK’s Creston Valley services committee arranged the tax in May 2013 but it wasn’t made public until late July, when most people were on holiday and unconcerned with local political activities. Less than six summer weeks, ending Sept. 9, were allowed for negative feedback.

Negative response to the tax requires at least 10 per cent (980) of eligible voters make the effort during their summer period to obtain, sign and submit a special form — this from a community where less than 30 per cent of voters normally turn out for well-advertised municipal elections.

The required form may be downloaded from the RDCK website, if one knows how to find it, or obtained from the RDCK office beside the Creston and District Public Library, both methods requiring especial effort by a dissenter.

The form does not say how or where to submit it.

The above requirements indicate to me that this new tax for ongoing yearly support of a private charity is clearly intended to be passed without any public discussion but with claimed prior public approval to answer any later objections.

The financial cost of this tax to most of us will not be great. Whether all taxpayers, agreeing with PAWS activities or not, should be forced by special taxation to support them without having a fair chance to object is one question. A more serious question is the use of the alternative approval process to pass such taxes. If an AAP technique is considered acceptable in this instance, it will probably be used for increasingly larger projects in the future. Please sign one of the

Alternative approval process not democratic To the Editor: The Regional District of Central Kootenay board of directors has decided to use the alternative approval process for the Pet Adoption and Welfare Society bylaw, outlined in the advertisement in the Aug. 1 edition (page 8) of the Creston Valley Advance.

If passed, the bylaw is negative option, the practice of giving people a service that was not previously provided and then charging them for the service unless they specifically decline it.

The flaw in the process is that it gives those in favor of the bylaw 100 per cent of the vote at the beginning and it’s up to those opposed to start a campaign with only 30 days notice. Those in favor of the bylaw don’t have to do anything because they win by default.

It’s mid-summer, and many people are on vacation, making it very difficult to ramp up a campaign with 30 days’ notice.

While the RDCK may choose to use the alternative approval process defined by the B.C. Community Charter, in my opinion, it’s not democratic.

Mindfulness enhances communication

Many techniques to improve communication have been made popular through books and workshops. Tools such as assertiveness, deep listening and use of nonviolent language can improve relationships, but so often, even though we know these techniques, we fall back into old patterns. The techniques are good, but they are only techniques.

The problem with a technique is that we apply the learned skill like a tool or a recipe and use it only when necessary. Techniques don’t change the basic tendencies that keep popping up in our communication patterns. We go on autopilot and follow a programmed response in our close relationships. Breaking these old patterns is essential if we want a new way of living and new habit formations that afford us opportunities to choose new ways of responding to others. Using the principles of mindfulness, we can break the old patterns of communication that keep us stuck in a reactive mode of relating and responding to others.

This could be motivated by a desire to be sociable, but often such behavior clutters the mind and distracts the attention of the communicants. It can also cloud the communication, creating misunderstandings about intention.

Make sure that what you have to say is true. What is true is not necessarily factua1. To know what is “true” is to know what is most helpful to everyone in any given situation. To say what is true, we have to drop our fixed positions and opinions and really be aware of the reality of the moment. We need to ask ourselves, what would be harmful to say, what would be helpful and is this the best time to say it? To do so in the heat of the moment takes a lot of mindfulness.

Corn Creek issue needs to pass ‘sanity law test’

There is a wooden bridge a stone’s throw from West Creston Hall, with

Corn Creek eating its way on both sides of the creek, getting closer to the bridge,

especially during spring snowmelt and after each major rainfall. No wonder the

original name of the creek was Storm Creek! (It was “renamed” Corn Creek by a newspaper story error.) Many large trees have fallen victim already. Some old, large, beautiful cedar trees might be gone before long.

Officials of all kinds are scratching their heads not knowing when and how to eliminate this threat. I am sure that all their possible “solutions” involve piles of federal, provincial and local taxpayers’ money. Is there a better way of solving this problem? I do believe there is: the “sanity law test”.

Picture this: a large excavator, a number of dump trucks and residents of Creston Valley interested in inexpensive river stone, gravel and sand. If the machine cuts a few-hundred-metrelong, 10-20-metre-wide, 1-1.5-metre-deep channel above the bridge, all troubled water will be directed to the right place during the spring and after every heavy rain.

I am positive a good number of property owners would gladly pay, let’s say, cost plus 10 per cent for stones, gravel and sand cleared from the creek bed. Businesses would be all too happy to participate, YRB would have one less problem to worry about, and Creston Valley residents would enjoy a natural swimming pool. Trees on both sides of the creek would be saved for years to come. It would not cost taxpayers anything.

Everybody saves, everybody benefits. If needed, this could be repeated every few years.

By the way, YRB’s gravel and rock yard is right next to the bridge. Do you think YRB would be interested in material doled out of the troublemaking Corn Creek?

The same approach can be applied across the valley, province or country. I believe a similar thing can be done on Goat River where Highway 21 crosses over.

This type of solution is from the people, by the people, for the people. Those who live in the land are the first who can take care of the land, protect the environment, benefit from nature and have the best possible outdoor recreation at close to zero cost available for at least three to five months each and every year.

Does this proposal appeal to you? If yes, I ask you to join me in pushing this idea into action.

Let’s see if we can advise people in the right places to work for the benefit of us all, saving taxpayers’ money and the environment, giving residents something to freely use, enjoy and cherish. Contact officials, YRB, local representatives, neighbours, friends and outdoor enthusiasts. Let us show everybody we care how our little forgotten foxhole functions.

My desired side effect is to bring a fresh breeze into the minds of inflexible bureaucrats playing in their respective sandboxes, fighting sanity all the way from cradle to grave. Yes, let sanity prevail for once.

Variety thrives at Corn Creek vineyard

F

or James McLeod, starting a vineyard after retiring to West Creston was more than just a way to keep busy — it was something he had to do.

“I didn’t want to live on a piece of property and not use it for agriculture,” said the former Banff resort Story and owner, who has photo by lived in the valley for 13 years.

Brian His two-acre Lawrence property is on a hill, with the lower half used as pasture for cattle and horses, and the uphill portion containing 12 rows of grapevines, which were planted as early as 2006 when McLeod followed a neighbour’s cue.

“My neighbour planted some and had a few extra left,” he said. “He gave me some.

Being from Banff, it was nice to grow something, so I went from there. … I started out experimenting with 13, searching for the right grapes for the microclimate here at Corn Creek.”

McLeod now grows 11 varieties at Castle Meadows, with five varieties of table grapes — Coronation, Steuben, Canadice, Flame and Skucum — and six types of wine grapes — Marechal Foch, Pinot Noir, Marquette, St. Croix, Castle and Kee Wah Dee. Each fall for a couple of weeks — they are snapped up that quickly — he sells table grapes and juice at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, with the fresh fruit proving to be a hit with customers.

“You see them walking around the market, eating as they go,” he said.

He appreciates the opportunity to interact with so many customers at once, having spent much of his adult life in the hospitality industry.

social event,” he said. “I’ve been doing it all my life; it’s just a different subject.”

Table grapes, McLeod said, are quite easy to distinguish from those used in wine.

“You want big juicy grapes without seeds,” he said.

The juice, which he squeezes in a commercial kitchen adjacent to the vineyard, gives customers a unique experience that isn’t easily available.

“It seems to have become popular,” he said. “To have a wine grape juice is a whole lot different than what you buy from Welch’s.”

The juice comes fresh or frozen, and many customers enjoy the juice as it is, although some add a bit of sparkling water, which “makes a nice cocktail,” said McLeod.

Others appreciate Castle Meadows because it offers local

ingredients for homemade wine, and they are able to buy whole grapes, juice or must (the freshly pressed fruit juice that still contains the skins, seeds and stems).

The grapes are organic, although not certified, with McLeod using only a dormant spray in the spring, and a weed barrier to prevent the need for herbicides.

In many ways, vineyard cul-

tivation is far more relaxing than his previous business, running Castle Junction resort near Banff.

“It was pretty intense,” he said. “We had 21 cabins, a gas station and a grocery store.”

But in at least one way, the vineyard is very familiar.

“It has the same issues — if you get the wrong weather, you lose the crop,” McLeod said with a laugh.

Yasodhara Ashram celebrating 50 years this week YASODHARA ASHRAM

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Yasodhara Ashram yoga retreat and study centre, one of North America’s longest-running spiritual centres.

Anniversary celebrations will be underway from Aug. 7-11 and will include an opening reception, guided tours, an evening gala of song and dance, and a special ceremony in the Temple of Divine Light.

Founded in 1963 by Swami Sivananda Radha, Yasodhara Ashram has been welcoming people of all ages and backgrounds to discover the transformative power of yoga for the last 50 years.

A pioneer in the development of yoga in the West, Radha’s approach was distinguished by her unique ability to synthesize yogic teachings and western psychology.

Originally an undeveloped acreage on the shores of Kootenay Lake, the ashram took shape as Radha and her small but dedicated community built residences, cleared land, created a farm and taught yoga. These pioneers physically and spiritually laid the foundation of Yasodhara Ashram as we know it today. Creston food action coalition delivering food prep program COLUMBIA BASIN TRUST

One of 16 projects receiving support from CBT’s Youth Grants Program, the Creston Teen Coffeehouse project will provide a space for teens to showcase their creativity while they learn valuable skills through assisting in the operations of the coffeehouse — skills that will be transferable to the workplace.

CBT grants help basin youth COLUMBIA BASIN TRUST

A range of projects, including those that support youth engagement, leadership, employment and entrepreneurship, were recently approved to receive funding through the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) Youth Grants Program (YGP).

Sixteen projects in total will receive over $92,000 to benefit youth around the basin.

“Our Youth Grants Program has supported a variety of youth projects throughout the basin region over the last eight years,” said CBT sector initiatives director Sabrina Curtis.

“A number of exciting projects will help build youth leadership while increasing youth engagement and opportunities in basin communities.”

The Kaslo and District Public Library Association is receiving funds through YGP for its Youth Programs at the Library project. With the funds, the library will co-ordinate six programs selected by youth, which aim to engage and support youth in using the library.

“We’re really excited about offering diverse youth pro-

gramming at the library,” said library services co-ordinator Annie Reynolds. “The project will engage Kaslo area youth with meaningful and interesting programming and workshops including crafting, computer programming, and film making and animation as well as a youth book club. The funds will also assist the library in offering a supportive environment to youth.”

The Creston Teen Coffeehouse project will also provide a space for teens to showcase their creativity while they learn valuable skills through assisting in the operations of the coffeehouse — skills that will be transferable to the workplace. Teens will be responsible to develop the coffee house business plan, organize entertainment and work a rotating schedule with anyone wishing to learn barista, server, sound equipment technical skills, entrepreneurship, promotion and business management.

St. Mary’s Indian Band will use YGP funds to host a youth campout to engage youth in Ktunaxa knowledge and traditions while experiencing positive and healthy recreational activities.

“The three-day Ka Knithwitik Youth Campout will combine fun with learning,” said St. Mary’s Indian Band Social development worker Johanne Allard. “During the campout, youth will create relationships and the opportunity for support while gaining a greater understanding of traditional Ktunaxa knowledge.”

YGP funds up to $15,000 per project that directly benefit basin youth aged 12-29. A range of organizations, school districts, First Nations organizations and local governments — plus youth aged 15 to 29 with a sponsoring organization — can apply.

CBT’s youth advisory committee, made up of 12 youth aged 15-29, adjudicates the YGP applications.

The Creston Valley Food Action Coalition will receive $6,800 to deliver a nutrition program that will improve access to nutritious foods and teach basic food preparation skills to families in the Creston Valley.

“These projects tackle diverse social issues and will affect people of many ages across the region,” said CBT president and CEO Neil Muth. “They will complement and strengthen the social supports already in place within our communities.”

Nearly 80 people enjoyed delicious appetizers, were entertained musically by Monte Anderson and witnessed the distribution of more than $20,000 to community nonprofit agencies at Rotacrest Hall on June 14.

It was the Creston-Kootenay Foundation’s 2013 grants presentation night. Those present included representatives of grant recipients, donors to the

CKF, invited guests, members of the CKF’s board and volunteers who helped to make the evening enjoyable (including five Prince Charles Secondary School students).

With MC Tina Rake calling the roll, CKF president Larry Brierley presented cheques to this years successful applicants for the foundation’s help. They included the Riondel and District Curling Club ($3,000), Creston Museum and Archives ($370), public health nurses ($500, from the Sommerfeld

fund) and the Creston Ministerial Association ($500, for ophthalmological and dental services for the needy).

Others recipients were the Creston Valley Hospice Society ($1,500), Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors ($4,000), Swan Valley Lodge ($1,200), Wildsight ($600), Creston Valley Community Greenhouse ($229), Therapeutic Riding Program ($5,000), West Creston Fire Protection Society ($1,800) PCCS scholarship ($500), Creston Valley Music Teachers

Association ($500) and College of the Rockies firefighters certificate ($1,000).

Following the presentations, Brierley thanked the many donors of door prizes for the evenings’ event.

He also thanked Regional District of Central Kootenay directors Larry Binks, John Kettle and Garry Jackman for their recognition and support of the CKF and its efforts to improve the quality of life in their areas. And he paid tribute to his fellow board members for the intelligence and hard work they displayed in making the evening possible and for the improvements they bring to the CKF and its service area.

He congratulated the recipients of this year’s grants, saying that they represented the wide variety of dedicated volunteers who do what they can to make our community better for its citizens. In that context, he invited more volunteers to join the foundation in one or another of the various roles of community service it offers.

One measure that it had been a successful event was the disclosure that the CKF’s capacity to do good things for its service area next year and for decades to come was that donations and pledges totalling $1,200 were donated to the organization during the evening.

SCAM ALERT

Though the “Emergency Scam” (or sometimes referred to as the “Grandparent Scam”) has been around for years, the RCMP-led Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns the public to be on alert after noting a marked increase in the number of complaints.

Ffraudsters contact potential victims while posing as a family member or friend in urgent need of cash.

Often the scenario involves an accident or arrest while travelling abroad, with a request that cash be sent through a money transfer company, such as Western Union or Money Gram.

In the typical scenario, a grandparent receives a phone call from a con-artist claiming to be one of their grandchildren. The caller goes on to say that they are in some kind of trouble, usually a car accident, returning from a foreign country, or even bail money and need money immediately.

Victims don't verify the story until after the money has been sent as the caller specifically asks that they do not want other relatives to know what has happened by asking “Can you please help me? I'm in jail (or in the hospital / or in some type of financial need). But don't tell Dad. He would kill me if he found out, please sent the money ASAP. I'm scared!"

Wanting to help their grandchild, the victim sends money by a money transfer company such as Money Gram or Western Union.

Variations on the scam exist such as an old neighbor, a friend of the family etc. but predominantly the Emergency Scam is directed toward the grandparents.

Roger was born in Chilliwack, BC on November 17, 1946, moved to Leduc, AB as a toddler then to Devon, AB where he started school. At the age of seven the family moved to Creston. Roger attended both elementary and high school here and was involved in many sports such as baseball, basketball, hockey and boxing. It was in his teen years that he met and started dating 6igrid 3arnell who was Àfteen at the time. At the age of seventeen, Roger attended hairdressing school in 6urrey which he enMoyed, but after Ànishing decided not to pursue it as a career. In 1966 he moved to 100 Mile House to work in the plywood plant. In 1968 he married Sigrid Parnell and they made their home in 100 Mile House where their daughters Tammy Lynn and Nichole Leigh were both born.

In the years they resided in 100 Mile House, Roger was actively involved in Search and Rescue and belonged to the Volunteer Fire Department. The family moved to Meadow Creek in 1976 where Roger and Sigrid bought the Meadow Creek Café. After two years they sold the café and continued to live in Copper Creek where Roger worked at Remco Cedar Mill for several years then Meadow Creek Cedar for several years.

In the 37 years of living in the Lardeau Valley, he was actively involved in the events and fundraising of the Lardeau Valley Community Hall. He spent countless hours each year developing Glacier Creek Park which he loved and and enjoyed for many years with his family and friends. Roger’s passion was hunting and Àshing with his grandsons.

Roger was diagnosed with cancer in March 2012 which took him away from us July 24, 2013.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Sigrid Leroux; daughters Tammy Berry and Nichole Leroux Bayoff (Dan); grandchildren Jared and Jesse Berry, Lauren, Tyler, and Tyson Bayoff; mother Hazel Leroux; sisters Linda (Grant) Romano, Sandi (Ed) Barton, and Barb Hanna. Roger was predeceased by his father Ernie Leroux in May, 2011.

We invite relatives and friends to join us for a Celebration of Life and Gathering on Saturday August 17, 2013 at the Lardeau Valley Community Hall at 4:00 pm. ,n lieu of ÁoZers, a donation to the BC Children's Hospital or Hospice Society of the North Kootenay Lake, Box 801, Kaslo, BC V0G 1M0 Zould be greatly appreciated.

G.F. teen skates with Gretzky at Idaho camp

A local hockey player had a chance to practice with hockey legend Wayne Gretzky at a recent camp at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

Chase McKay was amongst a group of three Boundary players (Bailey Shaw and Darren Petersen from Greenwood were also there) in Idaho, and while he heard rumours that Gretzky would be at the power skating camp (through the Compete Hockey Academy), he was still surprised to see the Great One. “One of my friends went to the camp the week before and he had told me that Gretzky went and was maybe coming back because his kid (Tristan) was there,” McKay told the Gazette. “I wasn’t 100 per cent sure but there was a good chance. I was really hoping he would be there, especially after finding out he was there the week before.”

One, and was honoured to skate and scrimmage by the player many recognize as the greatest hockey player of all time — he said Gretzky wasn’t going all out but was going at a decent pace.

“It was pretty amazing, knowing that you skated with

one of the best hockey players to ever play,” he said. “I was against him and that was weird.

Getting cleared out of the crease by Wayne Gretzky was pretty weird.”

While Chase did get a signed jersey from Gretzky, he didn’t

really have a chance to chat with the hall-of-famer, although his mother, Colleen, did.

“I was standing there, waiting for the kids to come out onto the ice and here’s this guy behind me that says, ‘Gee, these arenas never get warmer do they.’ I said, ‘No, no, they really don’t,” and I looked beside me and it was him,” said Colleen. “He sat there and talked to me probably for about 10 minutes.”

Colleen said topics ranged from how Tristan really didn’t play hockey to the Gretzky family’s recent visit to Vancouver to see son Trevor and the Boise Hawks playing the Vancouver Canadians in Class A baseball.

“I thought to myself, ‘I am standing here talking to Wayne Gretzky.’

But he was so nice. … That was my first encounter with him and it was awesome,” Colleen said, adding that the following Friday was when

She said Gretzky made sure to play with every kid on the ice.

“It was really neat for all the kids to experience playing with Gretzky and it was fun for Colleen and I because we’d grown up watching him play,” said Colleen’s husband, Warren. “I’m not a hockey player but even being on the ice and watching him skate and some of the passes he was making, he’s still got the touch after all these years. He seemed to really enjoy himself with a big smile on his face, playing with the kids; it was neat to see.”

For Chase, attending the camp and scrimmaging with Gretzky is something he’ll never forget.

“You just see how much he enjoyed the game. I’m hoping I can do the same,” Chase said. “To skate with the best player of all time is good.”

Gray Creek Pass back road open for season

During a season where many back roads have been closed because of flood damage, one popular route is open and in surprisingly good condition: Gray Creek Pass.

The popular route links the East and West Kootenay from Kimberley to Crawford Bay, 90 kilometres of gravel road over the scenic Gray Creek Pass.

Tom Lymbery, the owner of Gray Creek Store and co-ordinator of the Kootenay Lake Chamber of Commerce, says on busy weekends 200 vehicles will come over the pass.

“We rate this as a tourism resource road because it’s so interesting,” Lymbery said.

The history of the route goes back to the 1950s, Lymbery explained, when Cominco built a power line over Gray Creek Pass.

Cominco employees who had relocated from Kimberley to Riondel were keen to have a shorter route back to the East Kootenay, and at the time two roads were considered — one over Gray Creek Pass, and one over Rose Pass to the north.

But for the first time last spring, slides damaged the road and kept it closed, much to the disappointment of backcountry enthusiasts, the chambers of commerce and even Cranbrook city council, which spoke out in favour of the pass in September.

Finally, on Oct. 8, the road was fixed, and the pass’s short season began. Snow usually makes the high-altitude route impassable by the end of October.

Gray Creek Pass was officially opened in July 1990. Oliver Lake Recreation Site was established at the summit at 6,800 feet.

“This was designed for semi trailers and logging trucks,” Lymbery said. “In the early years, it was the recommended route for German tourists driving their rental motor homes.”

This summer, Mother Nature was shining on the pass, which opened at the beginning of July.

The Rocky Mountain Forest District still urges four-wheeldrive vehicles only to travel the route, which is narrow and rough in parts. Vehicles towing trailers, motorhomes and wide vehicles shouldn’t attempt it.

Still, it’s open, which is good news for backcountry enthusiasts.

thing like that. It’s a good solid road. A lot of it is built to main haul road status,” said Lymbery.

“We have quite a few people who go up and picnic at Oliver Lake.

“It’s still somewhat springtime up there. There are some flowers up there.”

What’s more, the route is unofficially part of the Trans Canada Trail.

“The official Trans Canada Trail is from Cranbrook to Kimberley. The unofficial part is from Kimberley to Gray Creek,” Lymbery explained. “We are working on that.”

A handful of people have made the trek over the pass on foot or on bicycles so far this season.

There’s a push to improve signage over the route, as many people have reported difficulty ensuring they are on the right path when other forestry roads connect with the pass.

At the Gray Creek Store, which is on Highway 3A where the pass connects back to the pavement, Lymbery has set up a guest book where those walking or cycling the pass can register.

“It doesn’t matter which way somebody is going, whether it’s cycling or hiking, we would like to get a record of how many people are using it and help it become officially part of the Trans Canada Trail,” he said.
