Open burning ban in effect Further to the information bulletin issued July 30, the campfire ban that came into effect at noon Saturday is for the southern portion of the Cariboo Fire Centre only.

Specifically, the campfire ban boundary starts from the west at Tweedsmuir Provincial Park, follows the QuesnelChilcotin/Central Cariboo forest districts boundary, heads east to Highway 97, south to 150 Mile House, east again along the Redeaux Lake FSR (2300 Road), and then follows the Central Cariboo-100 Mile House forest districts boundary to Wells Gray Pro-

vincial Park. A map of the area covered by the campfire ban is available online at: http:// ow.ly/ntHwv Areas where the campfire ban is in effect include the Chilcotin, McLeese Lake, Williams Lake, 150 Mile House, 100 Mile House and Interlakes regions.

This ban applies to open fires of any size, campfires, industrial or backyard burning, fireworks, tiki torches, sky lanterns and burning barrels.

The open burning prohibition put into place on April 15, 2013, remains in effect for the entire Cariboo Fire Centre

and applies to any type of industrial or backyard burning, including waste, slash, stubble or grass. Areas under the open burning prohibition, but not the campfire ban, include the Nazko, Quesnel, Wells, Barkerville and Likely/Horsefly regions.

Both the campfire ban and open burning prohibition do not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating that uses briquettes, liquid or gaseous fuel, as long as the height of the flame is less than 15 centimetres.

Society urgently needs volunteers to meet growing demand Tom, Joseph, Irene and Donna meet once a month to talk about how their lives are affected by dementia.

They are all caring for family members who are in various stages of the disease.

They are like many people who attend free caregiver support groups offered by the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. “This is their lifeline,” Leanne Jones, the Society’s Support and Education Coordinator for Quesnel and the Northern Interior said.

“They can meet with people with similar issues who are in a unique position to offer support to others on the same journey. The group is a place that they can talk openly, share

information and give each other mutual support.”

An estimated one in 11 B.C. residents over age 65 already live with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia.

And that number is projected to double over the next generation.

The resulting need for assistance is soaring and volunteers help ensure that the demand is met.

“Volunteers are absolutely invaluable to our team,” says Jones.

“It’s exceptionally rewarding work, to know that you are making a meaningful difference in someone’s life. Our volunteers tell us they get far more back in return than they give.”

Want to be a support group facilitator? The position has a few requirements: * Excellent listening and empathetic skills * Knowledge of dementia or a willingness to learn * Facilitation skills or a willingness to learn * Formal or informal caregiving experience an asset Training is provided and a one-year commitment is required.

Sharon was born on August 9th, 1945 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta.

Sharon married Alan Moi on December 29th, 1962, and lived a full happy life raising kids, dogs and gardening.

A Memorial Service for Sharon will be held Saturday, August 10th at 1pm at Clayton’s Funeral Chapel in Quesnel.

It’s a myth that you must have a bowel movement every day. For some people, 3 times daily is normal. For others, it could be every second or third day. Some people believe that “toxins” will build up if you don’t evacuate your bowels daily.

That’s another myth.

There has been much information about 3D printers in the media lately. The applications of this new technology is being investigated by medical scientists and one of the first body parts they are trying to produce is a human ear. It’s early days for the medical uses of 3D printing but the future looks very exciting.

Medications can have side effects but most cause no problems. Some classes of drugs can affect your sense of balance and that can be a problem especially in the elderly. These drugs include drugs to treat depression, high blood pressure and heart problems, sleep problems and anxiety. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist if you are concerned about the side effect of any drug you are taking.

In Wales, back in April, there was a marked increase in the number of cases of measles. Mass vaccinations took place to prevent the spread of this disease.

It points out that many parents are not vaccinating their children against measles and other preventable diseases. Immunization really does work!

The deadline for application for the Summer Grant Cycle has now closed. As this is the first time we have done a second grant cycle, we were very pleased with the response. Nine organizations submitted Letters of Intent, and six of those have been invited to submit detailed applications for funding for their community projects. Deadline for submission of applications is August 14. The Grant Committee will submit its recommendations to the Board on August 20, at which time the organizations will be notified of the results.

Grant monies issued in the summer cycle have to be used by December 31. The next grant cycle will start in December, with Letters of Intent due early January.

Confessions of a Snowbird fan Twenty-two highly-trained professional aviators travel light, arrive on time and perform magnificently.

Quesnel was priviledged to witness Canada’s military best this past weekend during Skyfest 2013.

The Snowbirds demonstration team arrived on Thursday and charmed the entire community, including this reporter.

I was there to witness their arrival, jets landing all in a row, perfectly spaced, precision-parked on the airport apron, each pilot emerging from his aircraft in the signature red jump suit, the technicians in their blue jump suits.

From the media affairs officer to every individual in the squadron, they were open and friendly, accommodating and patient.

Having never experienced this squadron in action, I was excited but wasn’t certain why. As military personnel, the 22-person crew followed their prescribed protocol, all the while greeting everyone they met with warmth and openness. No one was in doubt of their professionalism, or their skills, but they stole our hearts with their personalities. I guess I should say my heart, as that’s all I can really speak to.

Every performer in the Skyfest show was personable, but every one of them is in the business of being friendly. It’s their stock and trade; how they make a living.

The Snowbirds are first and foremost military – not in the business of pleasing crowds. However this squadron went out of their way to please Skyfest volunteers, media and of course, the crowd.

And when they dedicated their heart formation to me in the Sunday show that will remain a highlight of my life.

It’s one thing to present an extraordinary performance, but quite another to captivate an entire community.

B.C. aboriginal progress fragile T

he ceremonies have become common at the B.C. legislature.

Government officials and aboriginal leaders gather to celebrate resource sharing agreements that allow economic development in areas that need employment but are hampered by a century of uncertainty and dispute over treaties, or lack thereof.

This approach emerged a decade ago with forest agreements. The B.C. Liberal government bought back timber cutting licences from big forest firms and made them available for community forests and aboriginal communities who claimed the areas as their traditional territories.

Recently the approach was extended to mining revenues and water licence fees paid by private power developers.

These are substantial steps forward for the only province in Canada in treaty limbo. A 2010 sharing deal worth more than $30 million in royalties for the Mount Milligan copper-gold mine north of Prince George helped the McLeod Lake Indian Band recover from the pine beetle and forestry slump that devastated its business base.

B.C. Views Milligan expects to go into production this year. Another agreement with Kamloops-area communities shared revenues from an expanded Afton mine.

Perhaps the most ambitious agreement was concluded in March of this year when the government signed a deal with the Tahltan Nation for mining and hydroelectric development in remote northwestern B.C. The deal clears the way for a major extension of the BC Hydro grid to power the Tahltan village of Iskut and also the Red Chris metal mine, opening up the region to other mining and hydro potential as well.

To get that deal, the province put up $20 million last year to buy back Shell Canada’s coalbed gas leases in the Klappan region, headwaters of the Nass, Skeena and Stikine Rivers.

Those leases had become

focal point for oil and gas pipeline proposals.

Donaldson highlighted another problem. Last year the government signed a reconciliation agreement with the Gitanyow First Nation near Terrace, one of many communities struggling to get through the B.C. treaty negotiation process.

That agreement included a joint land-use plan.

Then the Environmental Assessment Office asked the Gitanyow for its input on proposed gas pipelines through its territory, to feed the government’s liquefied natural gas plans.

Again, the joint landuse plan has no provision for pipelines.

The Gitanyow hereditary chiefs wrote to the B.C. government in July, threatening to go to court over the pipeline proposal and questioning the value of their hard-won reconciliation agreement.

Resource revenue sharing agreements and shared land-use plans are well-intentioned and represent real progress. But these situations show how fragile they are.

a target of international protest.

Even after these expensive concessions, it would be an error to conclude that all is well between the Tahltan and the province.

Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson questioned Aboriginal Relations Minister John Rustad on this point during the recent legislature session. The Tahltan Central Council was pleased about shared decision-making on resource projects, until they found out that B.C. had handed the environmental assessment of a new openpit coal mine over to the federal government. The proposed mine is in the Klappan, known around the world as the Sacred Headwaters.

Rustad said shared decision-making deals such as the Tahltan agreement do not cover activities of the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office. Whether the review of that coal mine is federal, provincial or combined, it requires extensive consultation with affected parties.

That’s great, but all that goodwill could evaporate quickly if a coal mine ends up getting a permit despite Tahltan objections.

So many issues with our roads Editor: Open letter to HMC, Ministry of Transportation and to the RCMP. I feel that by writing this, I can hopefully save a life. Everyone knows there is something drastically wrong with our road through town. This is my take on it.

Let’s take a little imaginary trip through Quesnel with the eyes of the first timer.

Travelling passed the old tennis courts and around the corner by the Museum you come upon one and a half highway info signs.

I say one and a half as the trees cover most of the sign on the right and even with trimming it is never fully visible. Now, if you are a new comer to Quesnel, which way would you go? Look at these signs… ‘o West Quesnel’ or to ‘NORTH Barkerville and Prince George’?

Think about it. Would you have the wherewithal to realize that NORTH is capitalized and therefore directional while West only has one capital which would suggest the title of an area of town? Would you not be looking to see if you see a sign that directs you to Quesnel? You all have to admit when you see a motorhome with a boat

or truck attached driving to the West Side, you know they took a wrong turn and feel sorry for them. Why wouldn’t this sign be easier for people?

We had a family reunion one year when we lived quite a ways north of town towards P.G. Most of the guests that had never been to Quesnel ended up in Bouchie Lake due to the lack of signage and confusing information on those signs alone.

So, if you are lucky enough to have chosen North, here is where it gets super confusing. The lack of arrows on the road will eventually lead to someone’s demise – this originally had lines and arrows in this letter but the lines have since been painted The ‘Right Lane Must Turn Right’ sign is directly in front of the back of another sign facing southbound traffic which is larger and of the same colour. It wipes it out completely in your brain. The second ‘Right Lane Must Turn Right’ sign is in front of the United Church which is also the same color. Good thing we have the lines and arrows to help these poor people... oh wait.

They were painted with ‘environmentally friendly paint’ that melts with

each rainfall? Even when they were painted six months ago, some of the most important arrows were missed – the first one by the cemetery just as you come around the corner. I believe this lack of information to be the most important indicator that confusion is coming and coming fast. Is there any issue with putting straight through arrows on the middle lane so people know that lane is for straight through traffic only? And, if they do put them there, please put more than one so that there is enough room for big trailers and rigs to be able to merge into the lane in time. There is a failure to realize that this information is not for the people that live here! We drive to work every day, go and get groceries and, for the most part, know where we are going – we don’t need the lines, signs or arrows. Someone from out of town needs more information and a little guidance….not to be expected to figure it out all on their own.

Carrying on, we come to our one way street.

This is the one thing that makes me the most mad.

Years ago, this street went the other way with the traffic joining from Reid Street on to Carson Avenue. Not mentioning

any names, but someone had what they thought was a brilliant idea to change the direction of the one-way street (not fully though, the parking is still completely backwards – you should never turn right into angle parking). This was to make it more welcoming for tourists. Again, what tourist with their 40 foot motorhome/car combo is going to attempt to turn that corner to try going through town? Once they hit the pothole that never gets filled enough, they are done for.

Just a segue, if you are at the red light in front of the Observer turning left on to Reid Street, turn if there are no pedestrians.

It is a one-way street and you are holding up traffic that should not be held up.

The only signs showing “One Way Street” which are situated on the Reid Street corners are completely covered in tree branches and leaves.

It is so frustrating. Why is this something that is not cleaned up? Why are there no signs at the intersection on Carson letting people know it is a one way street and that they can go when the light is red when there are no pedestrians! I have gotten out of my vehicle and knocked on the window

of someone waiting to turn left through three green lights and two red while traffic keeps backing up behind us all up Front Street. Yes, I am looked at like I am crazy, but ask any RCMP officer/traffic school teacher and they will tell you the same thing.

Honestly.

I digress. Still travelling north on Carson, the two lanes all of the sudden turn in to one lane with no warning. Large trucks (carrying nasty things you really don’t want to know about going through our town) need the turning radius area and out-oftowners think they are supposed to be in the right hand lane that isn’t there! How there aren’t more accidents is a bit of a wonder. Once they get through this rigmarole, it really is no surprise that they don’t stay here to see what we have to offer.

Would you? It is not just due to the fact that we are the only city north of Hope without a municipal campground for people to stay at. Maybe that should be another letter/ request? Why dont we have a municipal campground near town for people to go on our gorgeous Riverwalk and take in our sights?

Why we have created such turmoil on purpose

is beyond me. I wonder why the RCMP has not closed these roads due to unsafe road conditions.

Does this rule strictly have to be due to weather?

Would it not make sense to close it to prove a point and get this done?

If this environmentally friendly paint is going to be used, we need to have this project done every three months to keep it up to date or use paint that will not go away in six months. For goodness sake, we clean our bridge more often than we paint lines on the road.

That itself is an entirely different letter. What would the harm be in putting straight arrows where we are to go straight through and more arrows showing the turn lanes? Is there a law that states how many we are allowed to use? Is there not a way that we can make this easier for people? Can highways not put the large green signs above the lights that show the actual direction of traffic?

I am also amazed that the folks that are responsible for these roads that drive them every day do not hang their heads in shame while at the same time, they yell at the tourists that are confused.

Quesnel Farmers’ Market launches photo contest

The Quesnel Farmers’ Market is looking for pictures of itself.

The market needs photos to use as promotional material in newspapers, magazines and electronic media.

Therefore, it is sponsoring a photo contest right now.

The contest includes cash prizes, plus fame and notoriety and a chance to have your photo selected for the 2014 Quesnel Visitors’ Guide.

There are four categories in the contest, with cash prizes of $50 and $25 in each category. The categories include: • People—pictures of people engaged in buying, selling, browsing, or taking part in Quesnel Farmers’ Market activities • Booths—images that show off a particular vendor or vendors at the Quesnel Farmers’ Market • Products—pictures showcasing products sold at the Quesnel Farmers’ Market

• Youth—this category is open to contestants under the age of 17. It is open to any kind of photo relating to the Quesnel Farmers’ Market.

Photographer and Farmers’ Market vendor Peter Drewcock has helped organize the contest and looks forward to lots of entries from Farmers’ Market fans.

“We’ve got a great market here in Quesnel,” Drewcock said.

“And some good photos will help us showcase it.”

I love riding my horse when I come home from work and I like learning how to be a more responsible horse owner through my experience in 4H. I also am excited about learning record keeping skills because I know it will help me be successful in every area of my life.

Quesnel couple make pole provincials

The sport of Pole Fitness is relatively new, but is growing quickly in popularity for many reasons. Pole fitness combines aspects of strength, dance and flexibility to make something unlike any other sport you have seen.

Quesnel locals Joel Kolenchuk and Jenny Phillips have been practicing pole fitness as a duo for 4 years.

Starting from her very first class, Phillips knew she would be purchasing a pole of her own and is now a certified pole fitness Instructor, teaching here in Quesnel.

And how did Kolenchuk get into the sport?

“My girlfriend had a pole in her living room,” he said.

Since then they named themselves, Vile Pole Arts and have provided entertainment for local events, as well as attended various competitions.

They placed first in the 2011 and 2012 Spinning Angels Pole Fitness Competition, doubles category (Prince George), as well as in the 2012 Alberta Pole Fitness Championships, doubles

category (Calgary). Now this summer they are taking on their home province of beautiful B.C. In order to be accepted as contenders, Phillips and Kolenchuk had to go through an audition process.

Each province holds video auditions and the best of the best are picked to compete live in that province’s

competition. The B.C. competition is being held in New Westminster, on Aug. 10.

Being a live competition, tickets are sold to the public, as well as performances being adjudicated by a panel of judges, adding an additional edge of stress and adrenaline to the situation.

The winners of each category will then attend the Canadian Pole Fitness Championships in Ontario.

Pole fitness has been very rewarding for Phillips and Kolenchuk.

“It’s like flying without wings” Jenny said.

And the strength one gains from climbing and doing tricks on a pole all day is phenomenal, especially working as a duo where Kolenchuk is often lifting or holding Phillips in different poses on the pole.

At the competition, the team hopes to achieve recognition for all their hard work and dedication, as the two want to make a career out of performing. And of course, placing would be a bonus.

Hockey update: who’s going where and when The sun is out, pouring golden rays and heat down on the Cariboo, while people water ski and sleep in tents and on beaches, and already many minds and bodies are readying for the snow, and, more to the point, the ice that signifies hockey is starting once again, because, hey, not all stereotypes are incorrect.

Alex Roach, an erstwhile Gold Pan resident is set to take the next step from the Calgary Hitmen, where he has been playing defence for the last three seasons to the L.A. Kings.

Alex is in El Segundo for the Kings Development Camp currently.

He has been training at the Quesnel

Acceleration Centre for the summer in anticipation of the camp.

Younger brother Jesse Roach, an erstwhile member of the gold medalwinning bantam Thunder last year, is headed down south to try out for the WHL’s Vancouver Giants.

Jesse was a second round draft pick for the Giants.

He received, what he called, a nerve racking phone call during the draft informing him of the good news.

“I’m really excited, I’m hoping to make the team this year,” he said In anticipation of the try-outs, Roach has been training five days a week all summer.

He flies out Aug. 18 to Vancouver.

Shelby Ballendine has been back in town for three months after her winter playing hockey in Leksand, Sweden.

Though asked back, Ballendine has faced some visa problems and is currently mulling over trying to obtain the more difficult visa and head back to Leksand, or going on a new adventure and playing in Belarus.

Last year’s stint in Sweden was a good stretch for Ballendine, with fierce competition.

“There were lot’s of skilled players and it was much faster, because of the bigger ice surface,” she said.

With a quicker game style, the

emphasis was on passing to the stick over angles.

“The coach was always telling us faster,” she said.

What really threw her, though, was her position on the opposite wing from what she’s used to because everyone else was left handed.

Tim Traber, another erstwhile native, has been back in town training for his next step. And it is a long step indeed; he is moving from the Victoria Royals to the bigger rinks of Europe.

Traber is making the move to Switzerland to join the professional ranks in the Old Country.

Kersley wraps up season and awards buckles The Kersley horse club just wrapped its 2013 Barrels and Poles Buckle series.

There were six competitions in total and riders had to ride in four of the six events in order to qualify.

Each event started at 6:30 p.m. at Rick Loomis’s house in Kersley, 2801 Otter road.

Of the approximately 40 riders competing, riders ranged from seven years old all the way up to 70 plus years old.

Carleigh King was the fastest around the barrel in the 1D open category on the back of Voodoo.

Bobby Twan came in second on Alfred, with Nicole Heppner taking third riding Sweety.

In 2D, Launi Stowell took the top spot on Blackjack.

Chelsea Brears was milliseconds behind on Shady.

Debbie Roch was the fastest rider in 3D, riding Stormy.

Brianne Lemieux followed behind in second on Lilly.

Dennis Gunn took first in 4D on the back of Snip, followed by Melinda Neufield.

Savannah Watson was the fastest in the youth division, taking first in the 1D. Sarah Mac was close behind
