Bad drug claims the life of Kelowna teenager Jennifer Smith STAFF REPORTER

Marissa Ginter’s online footprint shows a young woman who enjoyed hanging out with friends, music and graffiti. The parents of the 17-year-old youth who died Friday after allegedly ingesting tainted ecstasy are not speaking publicly about her death. Marissa Ginter was first identified in the media by a friend’s parents as be-

ing among a group of three youth whose story RCMP went public with in order to warn others about the possibility that tainted drugs are circulating in Kelowna. A statement released Friday morning said the youths—initially identified as a 15, 16 and 18-year-old—had been admitted to hospital with severe gastrointestinal issues and itching from what RCMP believe to be a bad batch of ecstasy.

Marissa Ginter “There have been others with similar experiences after consum-

ing street drugs recently,” Kelowna RCMP Const. Kris Clark said last Friday, hours before Centre of Gravity brought thousands of youth into the downtown core. Ginter’s obituary indicates she died the same day the warning was issued. Nothing official has been said about how or why the drug is alleged to have killed the young woman, but online speculation by other youth has

That disease is ALS, sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease because it claimed the life of the legendary New York Yankee first baseman. The acronym stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a disease that is a progressive neuromuscular ailment in which nerve cells die and leave voluntary muscles paralyzed. Hope is difficult to find for those afflicted with ALS as well as their family members or caregivers. It is a diagnosis that is literally a death sentence, a disease in which your mind will continue to function normally until

placed the blame on heroin. Meanwhile, a more complete picture has begun to surface in the online comments and her own electronic footprint. Ginter’s obituary identifies her as one who frequented the Boys and Girls Club of the Central Okanagan and Facebook and YouTube posts speak to a young woman who enjoyed music, creativity and spending time with friends.

She is said to have played musical instruments, have a lovely singing voice and an effervescent smile, by those who took the time to post comments on her memorial page at Springfield Funeral home. “I ran into Marissa several times over the last few months and every time she was so warm and friendly,” Alana Turigan wrote Sunday afternoon.
