Cumberland Chinatown history comes back to life Renee Andor

en era of Chinatown was from 1918 to 1923. Many residents worked as miners for the Dunsmuir family, who owned Union Colliery Company.

Others worked as cooks, helpers in hotels and restaurants, farmers, store clerks and as sawmill and shingle mill workers, among other things.

Chinatown featured 24 Chinese grocers, a handful of butcher shops, tailor shops, restaurants, drugstores, a couple of taxis, two department stores (selling things like groceries, dry goods and hardware), two Chinese theatres, a photography studio, a dentist, a fortune teller and 10 Fan Tan

Though Leung, 80, was born in Cumberland proper, his mother was born in Chinatown, and Leung spent plenty of time there while it still existed.

Water, lily pads and bushes now line a trail just off Comox Lake Road, but this used to be the heart of Cumberland Chinatown, and a bustling town of about 1,200 Chinese and many businesses.

For someone who has no knowledge of the history of Chinatown, it can be hard to imagine this swampy area was once a busy town.

Leung aimed to change that when he recently installed permanent photo easels showing what some of the buildings looked like and where they once stood.

“I always wanted something, memories of history of Chinatown, and thus I started with the pictures,” says Leung, noting he put paper photos up previously but they became damaged by weather.

“We thought it would be nice to have them restored and made new.”

Leung’s friend Ralph Thompson helped to install something more permanent. The photos are laminated and protected by a plastic casing. The two men then buried four-by-four posts in the ground with cement at the base.

They put the finishing touches on the photo easels last week.

“I’m kind of proud,” says Leung with a laugh. “I’ve been quite a strong advocate for the Chinese.”

Leung also designed the picnic pavilion at Chinatown, which was installed a couple of years ago, and he designed the sign at the Chinese Cemetery, among other things.

Because the area was so swampy, Leung notes buildings were built on stilts and people kept to boardwalks as they got around.

About 100 Chinese died in mining disasters over the course of the town’s existence, and many suffered losses from floods and fires, including a fire in 1943 that destroyed about one third of the town.

Dialysis gives life, but affects quality of that life Comox Valley Kidney Walk Aug. 18 at Simms Park Renee Andor Record Staff

Twelve hours out of each one of Colleen Howard’s weeks is spent on hemodialysis.

Howard, who is 62 and lives in Comox, has kidney disease.

Three days per week, she heads to the Cumberland Community Dialysis Facility for four hours of dialysis.

“Dialyzing three times a week at four hours a day really cuts into your day,” says Howard, adding dialysis can be tiring but she still works part time as a pharmacist. “I work on the days that I don’t have dialysis, but some days I’m OK to go into work after dialysis, too.

It just depends on the day.”

Howard is this year’s regional honouree for the Kidney Walk in the Comox Valley, which is set for Aug. 18 at Simms Millennium

Park in Courtenay.

This will be the third annual Kidney Walk in the Comox Valley.

The walk is designed to raise funds for the Kidney Foundation, and generate awareness about the disease and the need for organ donors. Howard has already attended the past two walks in the Valley, and last year she raised the most funds out of the walkers here, about $1,600.

This year, she’s already beat last year’s total, raising about $2,000 so far.

“The funding is always valuable — it’s very expensive to receive an organ and the Kidney Foundation pays for a lot of things already, they pay for all our medications and they pay for the dialyzing and the chairs and the machines,” says Howard.

“It’s really important to have those funds in place so more people can benefit because, more and more, there’s people with … kidney disease that are requiring dialysis — it’s getting quite prevalent.”

Some kidney facts Fast facts from the Kidney Foundation: • Kidney disease is under-recognized, incurable and on the rise.

• In the past 10 years, kidney disease has increased by 60 per cent.

• It is estimated that this disease affects one in 10 Canadians.

• Over 250,000 British Columbians have or are at risk for kidney disease.

• More than 18,000 kidney patients are on dialysis every year.

• Many symptoms of kidney disease are silent until almost half of the kidney function is lost.

• Approximately 480 people in B.C. are waiting for a life-saving transplant, and of those approximately 380 are waiting for a kidney.* • For those with kidney disease, the average cost of dialysis is roughly $60,000 per patient per year.

• The one-time cost for a kidney transplant is approximately $20,000 plus $6,000 per year for necessary medication.

Many symptoms are silent until almost 50 per cent of kidney function is already gone.

Howard’s kidneys were damaged when she contracted C. difficile in 2007. By March, 2011 Howard had started dialysis, and she’s been on it ever since as she waits for a kidney donation.

But, Howard’s wait will soon be over.

Her friend Maggie Enwright has decided to donate a kidney to help Howard.

“She’s my donor but

we’re not a match,” says Howard, noting they are using the Paired Kidney Exchange program. “So, she’s giving to somebody in Calgary and I’m going to receive from somebody in Vancouver, and so they’ve matched us up.”

Howard is set to receive her new kidney in the fall, and she will travel to Vancouver for the surgery, then live there for six to eight weeks after the transplant.

Besides dialysis three times a week and lost work time, kidney patients must follow very strict diets.

“The diet is very rigid, and sometimes it’s hard to find things to nourish your body, especially snacks because there’s no dairy, no peanut butter, no grains, no seeds, no potatoes — unless you boil them three times or soak them and then boil them — so it’s very restrictive,” she explains. “Even fruit has a lot of potassium so you have to really be careful what fruit you eat.”

Howard is “delighted” to be chosen as this year’s honouree for the Comox Valley Kidney Walk, noting the walk creates solidarity amongst Comox Valley residents with kidney disease.

“Some of the nurses come out and some of the patients come out — not everybody can walk but you get support from your people that support you every day in dialysis,” she says.

Registration will start at 10 a.m. and the walk will start at 11 a.m. The Comox Valley Kidney Walk will also

feature a silent auction with donations from local businesses. Anyone wishing to donate something to the silent auction, or volunteer their time to help out with the event can call regional co-ordinator Mary Ruth Harris

Stock the Lockers goal increases from previous years Renee Andor Record Staff

The annual Stock the Lockers campaign is back at Courtenay’s Staples store — and this year the fundraising goal is more ambitious than in the past.

Store manager Arnie Harnden says last year’s campaign was very successful with over $7,500 raised.

“We had an incredible year for fundraising … I know that the school district and the parents locally were thrilled with the results and it’s one of the best years we’ve ever had. We’ve set our goal even higher this year,” he says noting this year’s goal is $9,000.

RCMP engaged in menhunt Erin Haluschak Record Staff

Police are hunting for two men who fled the scene of a latenight two-vehicle crash Thursday in Comox.

Const. Marcel Slofstra of the Comox Valley RCMP said they received a call about a T-bone collision at the intersection of Balmoral Avenue and Pritchard Road around 9:40 p.m.

When police attended, they found only one vehicle — a red Dodge Dakota with an Alberta licence plate stuck in a cedar hedge.

RCMP said the vehicle had made contact with a full-sized van.

“On our arrival, a male was seen fleeing from the scene,” he added. “Police dog services were used, and we were able to take that male into custody.”

Slofstra noted the man was intoxicated, however, police were

As well, he says customers really really get behind the cause.

“Everybody’s very supportive,” says Harnden. “I know we’ve got a number of our regular clients and customers that give several times.

THE ROYAL CANADIAN Legion in Courtenay is staging a Neil Diamond tribute show Aug. 25 starring Joey Purpura.

Tribute to Diamond His voice may not be what it used to be, but Neil Diamond can still sell out concerts and provoke girlish screams from the audience.

His charisma was — and still is — legendary.

Joey Purpura has lived and breathed Neil Diamond since 2004, travelled across the country and parts of the Caribbean with his tribute show Diamond in the Rough.

“I’ve always been able to do voices, as long as I could remember,” said the 39-year-old.

“When I found out I could do a pretty good Neil Diamond, my friends encouraged me to go on stage.”

The singer wasn’t on Purpura’s radar growing up and so he really started from the ground up.

In 2002, the Toronto-based impersonator began researching the singer’s life, studying his every move, song and story behind the music.

He found a Las Vegas-based designer able to replicate Diamond’s glittery costumes of the mid-70s.

“I wanted to research his life because I not only sing his songs, I tell a story and highlight his life just to make it more interesting,” said Purpura.

He searched for little known facts about the singer.

For instance, Diamond grew up in the same neighbourhood as Barbra Streisand. They went to the same school and sang in the same choir.

Purpura also discovered Diamond was a pre-med student and was six months and 10 credits short of a pre-med degree when he abandoned his studies to pursue music.

“He recorded and released a lot of albums and so he has a huge backlog of music,” Purpura said about the singer’s international appeal.

“And he continues to tour. His music is very diverse and his songs, as one biographer said, cut through your heart and soul, making you feel his pain, anguish and joy.”

Diamond was never a heartthrob, but an artist revered for his songwriting and storytelling.

LASQUETI ISLAND — If the recipe for a good time includes a dash of the unexpected, Hagana is a master chef.

The sun was setting behind the Vancouver Island mountains as we sat on the deck of the Lasqueti Island Hotel pub.

There’s a band getting ready to play, tucked into the patio’s corner, and we’re not sure exactly what to expect.

Sure, Hagana’s posters that are splashed about the place say they are three guys from Scotland and they play this kind of music and that kind of music, but posters never tell the real story, do they?

It’s Lasqueti Island, after all. It’s going to be some easylistening James Taylor-type stuff or, in deference to the reputation of the Island, some kind of Grateful Dead/Cream hippie-inspired rock, right? We did think the music may match the distinctive smell of the area, which had nothing to do with food — think smoke from B.C.’s most lucrative crop.

Then, Leo Fox (guitar and vocals), David Chisholm (drums and vocals) and Gary Pycroft (bass) start playing.

It’s all original, driving, fun, tight and has enough elements to keep all sorts of people engaged, entertained and dancing, everyone from an aging Ontario-bred punk to a poploving young woman to middleagers who could easily have been doing the same kind of dance at Woodstock.

Hagana, three lads from Edinburgh (although it should be pointed out Pycroft is Belfast-raised), has started its three-week Canadian tour on Lasqueti.

“We absolutely love the place (Lasqueti),” said Pycroft. “It’s surreal.”

Hagana returns to Lasqueti on Aug. 10 after performing Aug. 9 at the Waverley Hotel in Cumberland.

PHOTO BY JOHN HARDING lot heavier and a lot tighter,” said Fox. First and foremost, Hagana seems sellable. Some lucky manager and label could make these boys and themselves a lot of money. Hagana has a distinctive, original sound, that blends rock, punk (don’t be scared, it’s not ugly gob-inducing punk I’m talking about here) and even some rockabilly.

Hagana’s sound has variety, which seems like a great idea for any band that wants to please a diverse crowd, sell albums or both.

These guys are definitely having fun, which comes out in their music and bleeds through the crowd, almost forcing you out of your chair to the dance floor. They are engaging, respectful gentlemen off stage, too, and have jobs at home.

Pycroft, for example, is a youth social worker, and Chisholm is now a full-time music producer with his own studio in Edinburgh.

Kabush selected for national mountain bike team Courtenay’s Geoff Kabush is one of 32 athletes that will compete for Canada at the 2013 UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships.

Cycling Canada on July 31 announced the selections for the event, to be held Aug. 26 to Sept. 1 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

Six-time Canadian champion Kabush, twotime Canadian champ Max Plaxton (Victoria) and current Canadian champion Derek Zandstra (Trenton) will be looking to post big performances this year in the Elite men race.

“We continue to have the ability to stand on the

podium at these events,” said Jacques Landry, high performance director and head coach at Cycling Canada.

“Our cross-country program has been one of the strongest in the world over the last Olympic cycle with world titles and World Cup titles, as well as several medals in downhill.

“We are heading to South Africa with the objective to continue our momentum of performance at the highest level as we enter a new and exciting cycle that will take us to Rio,” Landry added.

Coaching tandem Jeff Williams and Ramses Langston will return for a third straight year as the

program seeks a rare threepeat.

The coaching staff held a final selection camp this past weekend at Shawnigan Lake School where they were able to fine tune their squad heading into the tournament.

“Our camp went really well and we had 30 guys in attendance,” said Williams.

“We’ve been working a lot on our defence and putting in the hard yards and focus-

ing on our tackling.”

T h e s q u a d is one of the faster teams to be assembled at the U18 DEWITT l e v e l according to Williams, who says opponents will learn pretty quickly that they like to play some high-tem-

po rugby.

Playing at home has its challenges, Williams says, but the selection process of seeing the top talent in action at the club, high school and at the recent B2Gold Provincial Regional Championships has him convinced this squad is up to the task.

The lawn bowling season is halfway through, and July has been the busiest month of all.

Vern Greenhill, Rick Quibell and Mary Mulligan came through the five games of the July 20-21 Lakeside Gold Bowl in Nanaimo without a loss, defeating the Stu MacNaughton team from Parksville to take top spot.

Dean Penny, Cath and Don and Chris Wiseman gave a very good account of themselves, successfully playing some extra ends for their wins. Pat Cutt, Henri Saucier and Janet Butler posted two wins and three losses in close games.

Pat Cutt, Irene Whitehouse and Melie Ursulom travelled to Maple Ridge for the Provincial Senior Ladies Triples and came home very quickly. Marlene Cleutinx, Josephine Lee and Anne Van Bastelaere were the winners of the Ladies.

The Christie Grahame team won the men’s side and these two teams will travel to Peterborough, Ont. for the Canadian championships in August.

Marie and Malcolm Taylor of North Vancouver won the mixed pairs in a close game against Hiren Bhartu and Josephine Lee and will travel to Calgary for that national event.

At home, the mixed pairs are rolling along with a few catch-up games to be played. The Webber is getting close to the end.

The Friday Aggregate continues to be well supported and the leaders are Dean Penny and Michael Lynch with 23 points,, followed by Melie Ursulom with 21 and the Marsha Mann and Marguerite Sklarchuk with 20 points.

Coming up is the Mixed Triples in Qualicum and then our own Chad’s Mixed Fours. This year the theme is Pirates and dress code is standard whites, club or team colours unless you are in pirate mode.

Ellen Elizabeth (Betty)

August 24, 1949 – July 31, 2013 Craig passed away unexpectedly while on the disc golf course at Fir Meadows in Courtenay which he helped design and create. Craig is predeceased by his mother “Billy� Dieno.

He is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 37 years, June, his sons Dan and Graeme (Greta), his father Harold Dieno, his sister Lesley Dieno and her daughter Sarah, his brother Gordon Dieno and Gordon’s daughters Jennifer (Mike) and Katie (Geoff) as well as numerous other relatives and friends here in Canada and throughout the world.

Craig’s belief and trust in God has reunited him with our missing family members who have gone before him. In his leisure time Craig enjoyed tennis, disc golf and made many friends through those activities with whom he enjoyed spending time. He willingly volunteered to help in any situation and received loving relationships from those he helped. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

October 16, 1922 – July 28, 2013 Betty led a long and very active life travelling extensively across Canada with her husband, who was in the military.

Betty was predeceased by her husband, Gerry in 1993 and her daughter-in-law, Lucienne in 2011. She is survived by her son Gerry in Montreal; daughter Pam (Randy) in Courtenay; grandchildren Kelly, Patrick, Shannon, Kris, and Thomas; and nine great grandchildren.

November 8, 1924 ~ July 29, 2013 Passed suddenly Monday afternoon in Comox B.C. Predeceased by her husband Walter, daughter Janet Elaine Barron and brother Robert (Bert). Lovingly remembered by her son Alan (Janice) their children Taylor and Geordie and grand-daughters Kate Martin (Tyson), Jennifer Barron, Kelly Killingsworth and great grandchildren Sadie and Arthur Martin, and Megan Killingsworth. Janet also had one great great grand-daughter Natalie Killingsworth. Also remembered by sisters Marion Allan (Alistair), Elizabeth Andrew and nieces and nephews Sandy and Ralph Andrews, Doreen Christie (Cliff) and Bruce Allan.

Janet was born in Crosshouse, Ayrshire Scotland where she met and wed Walter, a Canadian soldier from Saskatoon, Sask. They spent most of their married life in the greater Vancouver Area. Janet lived at Berwick, Comox Valley the past 6 years.

Margaret Patricia Lucas was born in Grande Prairie, Alberta on July 24, 1916.

She entered Heaven’s Gate on July 30, 2013. Margaret was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Murray. She was predeceased by her seven siblings.

Margaret is survived by her loving husband Charles Gilbert (Gil) Lucas. They met on a blind date and were happily married for seventy three years. Margaret is also survived by her six children; Patricia (Roland) Blais, Joan (Robert) Ross, Mary Lucas, Gary (Tina Kelly) Lucas, Susan Johnstone, Kathy Hazlehurst, her eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Margaret was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will always be remembered for her loving spirit and beautiful smile.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday, August 10 at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1599 Tunner Drive, Courtenay, B.C. with Father Joe Killoran officiating. A reception will follow at the church.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Hunter, Dr. Dan and the Third Floor staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their compassionate care of Margaret.

Review earning applause The BC Chamber of Commerce commends the B.C. government for advancing plans for a core review, which targets greater efficiency and accountability in government’s use of taxpayers’ dollars.

“We think a core review with this mandate and scope promises substantive gains for B.C.’s taxpayers,” said John Winter, the BC Chamber’s president and CEO. “This initiative is great news for British Columbians and aligns directly with what our 36,000 represented B.C. businesses have been calling for.”

Winter said that some of the best news coming out of the government’s justreleased terms of reference for the core review includes: • The broad scope of the initiative, which includes B.C. ministries, boards, commissions, Crown agencies, schools, universities, colleges and hospitals; • An emphasis on finding alternative, more cost-efficient service delivery models.

“We’re very pleased to see that the government is truly trying to put its house in order, including tackling areas of public concern such as B.C.’s Crown corporations,” Winter said. “We also commend the government for emphasizing alternate service delivery models.”

The BC Chamber also applauded the B.C. government’s plans to refine the ideas that emerge from the core review through consultations with industry and other stakeholders.

“All in all, we’re extremely pleased to see how this initiative is advancing and we look forward to helping find private-sector solutions to some of B.C.’s challenges,” Winter said.

Locals’ service exemplary Trish St. Pierre and her team at Locals Restaurant went above and beyond recently to accommodate a couple who were celebrating their 50+ wedding anniversary.

Justice, not vengeance It’s been more than two years since South Surrey resident Jim Neiss was killed in a head-on collision as he drove to work.

Last week, the trial of the man accused of dangerous driving causing death in connection with the horrific collision got underway in Surrey provincial court.

Glen Theriault has pleaded not guilty to the charge against him, and there’s no doubt that over the course of this week, the judge will continue to hear many heart-wrenching details of the case. Tempting as it may be for members of the public to render judgment of their own long before a verdict is pronounced – and many, no doubt, already have – it is paramount that one of the cornerstones of our legal system not be forgotten: innocence until guilt is proven.

Few would argue that there are those who knowingly take advantage of what can appear to be a system that favours offenders; grasping at every straw available until the inevitable – time behind bars – can no longer be avoided.

It does not help that sentences imposed often seem to fall short when compared to the level of harm done. Two years in jail for an act that cuts someone’s life short will never feel like enough to those who have to go on living without their loved one.

But we cannot forget that not everyone before the courts is playing the system. Even though investigation techniques have improved vastly over the course of a century, it is still possible for people to be charged with crimes for which they are not guilty.

Others may have made mistakes – sometimes grievous mistakes – which they will pay for, in some way, for the rest of their lives.

No one would suggest for a moment that the culpability of the accused not be explored, but they are also entitled to a fair hearing and a defence that ensures that any and all extenuating circumstances are known and understood.

As imperfect as our system is, for it to mean anything it must stand for a principle of justice, rather than a desire for vengeance.

Trash talk daunts candidates Dear editor, Am I having déjà vu all over again or have I not seen this type of diatribe previously?

Oh yes, the last U.S. and Canadian elections were full of it. Surely we have not stooped to those levels!

The recent letters in the local papers border on slander, but worse than that, they impugn the very integrity of the people that the good people of Courtenay had the sense to elect.

All but one councillor, it seems, now lack the moral fibre and financial wherewithal to make the very decisions they were elected to make. How did that suddenly happen?

It’s worth noting that a properly functioning council works on consensus, that is, after discussions and deliberations a vote is taken, majority rules, and here’s the point … all members then take on that decision and support it!

It is standard procedure in any board that if one cannot support the majority rule they should immediately resign their position. Any board member that goes outside that consensus with an opposing position weakens the board’s credibility and its ability to govern.

They then become the “weak link,” which is a touch ironic don’t you think?

Our form of governance at the municipal level is called the Weak Mayor system. You can’t make this stuff up!

To make matters worse, when a member of council sticks his head above the parapet and tries to bring context and reason into play by explaining what the majority position is, he is roundly castigated and accused of being arrogant.

Let’s see this for what it really is. The letters are a not-so-thinly veiled shot from the starting pistol for the next elections. Their tone indicates that this will not be a pleasant event; the knives

Shame really, because this kind of trash talk only discourages fine and qualified people from running for elected positions. I mean, why would anyone bother?

Being taken to task and smeared for agreeing (and, yes, they all agreed) to spend a

minuscule amount of their budget to attend conferences where the collective wisdom and best practices of many are shared, so they might be in a better position to determine how best to govern.

How is that a junket? Do you not want your elected officials to be as smart as they can be?

Unlike the authors of that rubbish, I will not use names, but I believe it to be wholly unfair that one or two councillors are singled out; those who had the courage to speak their minds and try and put some perspective on the situation.

I sincerely hope the voters of Courtenay see through this, for what it is. Petty, parochial, politics where nobody wins.

Before you rush to your Commodore 64 to flame me, I ain’t got no dog in this fight; I do however recognize garbage when I Terry Chester, read it.

Comox infill has some flaws Dear editor, The recent article in the Comox Valley Record of July 23, 2013, indicates that Comox Town Council continues to move forward with its plans to implement a new type of “infill” development in the town.

Of course this word “infill” refers to amending an existing bylaw to create a new development area for coach houses.

Some might consider that adding new buildings and additional tenants to stable existing neighbourhoods is not “infill”, but more accurately, “overfill.”

There are a number of reasons why Comox homeowners should be concerned with this proposal; specifically, what negative impacts this plan could have on well-established existing neighbourhoods, property values, and the overall quality of life.

Certainly the increased density, heavier traffic, greater demand for services including water, sewer and emergency, increased

noise pollution, decreased privacy and “shadowing” are attendant issues which cannot be considered conducive to maintaining a healthy neighbourhood environment.

In addition, there are the anticipated difficulties in constructing these residences and connecting them to services such as water, sewer, gas and electricity without significant disruption to the existing neighbourhood.

Another area of concern which has been raised in other jurisdictions considering similar plans, is the accessibility of these new units to town services such as waste pickup and to emergency services such as fire, police and ambulance.

It is entirely possible that council is aware of these issues and has made appropriate plans to deal with them; however, the various recent local media articles relating to the proposal have certainly not left that impression.

Climate change real

Dear editor: Re: “NDP soul search going nowhere” (B.C. Views, July 31).

Climate change is a reality, and bold political leadership is needed to address it.

During the election campaign, New Democrats put forward a plan to expand the base of the carbon tax to include venting emissions from oil and gas operations, capturing an additional five per cent of carbon emissions in the province, but that plan didn’t include all industrial process emissions.

We believe that government should work with the oil and gas sector to make sure companies pay their fair share for the emissions they produce.

This is particularly important as the B.C. Liberal government pursues an aggressive schedule of LNG expansion which, if realized, will make it nearly impossible for the government to reach our legal emission reduction requirements.

New Democrats will hold the government to account for their green promises, and continue to advocate for policies that help reduce emissions and spur efficiency, innovation and best practices.

Dog test this weekend

VAMPIRES WON’T ATTEND the Garlic Festival this Sunday at Amara Farm, but maybe you should.

If you have owned a dog and taken it to obedience classes in the Comox Valley in the past 40 years, you might have trained with the Forbidden Plateau Obedience and Tracking Club (FPOTC).

Founded in 1973 by a small group of dog obedience and tracking enthusiasts, the club has trained thousands of local dogs and their owners over the years. Most owners have taken classes simply to improve their dog’s behaviour while others have joined the club, taken part in competitions and in many cases gone on to become dog trainers themselves.

Classes are currently held every second weekend in September at Queneesh Elementary School.

As part of this year’s 40th anniversary celebration, the club will

hold a Canine Good Neighbour test Aug. 7 at the Comox Valley Exhibition Grounds in the Rotary Bowl, following Best in Show judging at the Glacier View Dog Show.

This test is open to all dogs regardless of breed and is sponsored by the Canadian Kennel Club. The test itself consists of a variety of exercises all designed to test the dog’s ability to behave in common situations, such as walking through a crowd, accepting being touched by a stranger, walking nicely with the owner and waiting quietly while the handler is out of sight.

Garlic Festival at local farm People in this area seem to just love good garlic

Is the Comox Valley ready for garlic-flavoured gelato?

The folks at Amara Farm seem to think so.

The gelato, along with garlic breads, jam, and braids, will be featured at their first Garlic Festival on Aug. 11 from noon to 3 p.m. at 2641 Kirby Rd. “We think the demand for flavourful garlic is really strong in the Comox Valley,” states Arzeena Hamir, owner of Amara Farm.

“We’ve seen how successful garlic scapes have been as a product and when we sold garlic jam at the farmers’ market, it sold out in less than one hour. People in the valley love good garlic!”

The farm grows two different varieties of garlic, Music and Italian Softneck, which are strong-flavoured but not hot. In addition to their own garlic, Hamir has also invited other farmers to come and sell their garlic so varieties such as Korean Red and Red Russian will also be available.

Thanks to some careful experimenting by the owners of Legato Gelato, two different kinds of garlic gelato will be available for sampling, exclusively available at Amara Farm. A Garlic Lover’s flavour features flecks of raw garlic while the Hint of Garlic is a sweet vanilla with creamy roasted garlic.

Festival-goers will be able to stroll the grounds, listening to local musicians, and participate in a silent auction featuring art

by Brian Scott, Medwyn McConachy, and Romona Gregory, plumbing, photography, massage services, and much more. Kids will enjoy making garlic-inspired crafts, face painting, and playing in the straw bale area.

Proceeds from the silent auction, soda sales, and gelato profits will be donated to the legal expense fund for local registered midwife Katie McNiven Gladman, in support of her recent appeal to St. Joseph’s General Hospital.
