They’ve had enough and they’re doing something about it. Following the deaths of four people in Seymour Arm this summer, four medically trained volunteers are in the process of forming a nonprofit first responders group. Jan Hedmark, former Sicamous
firefighter and now member of the Shuswap unit of Royal Canadian Marine Search And Rescue (RCMSAR), Christa Meyer, a member of the Sicamous Volunteer Fire Department, Stan Devlaming, a Vancouver doctor who summers in Seymour Arm and Mitch Yurchak, a firefighter with Alberta’s Rocky View Fire Department, are hoping to gain government and commu-
nity support for improved access to medical care – including raising $15,000 to buy a fully-equipped ambulance. In the process of launching a boat in Seymour Arm recently, Hedmark stopped to help perform CPR on a man in cardiac distress. “We kept doing it for the next 90 minutes until the chopper arrived from Kamloops, but he was gone,”
